West Side looted as residents lament

‘It is sad to watch as more Black lives are lost and property is destroyed,’ said NAACP leader

It was a Sunday afternoon of contrasts in Austin.

On North Austin Boulevard an eighth grader in cap and gown posed in front of congratulatory signs and balloons. A mile away, in the shopping mall at North Avenue and Cicero, looters ran across a chaotic street shedding empty shoe boxes as they ran. The Forman Mills store was wide open as were stores further west in the strip mall.

Lines were long at McDonald’s and Popeyes drive thru lanes, but small liquor stores and cell phone shops were broken into and looted from North Avenue to Madison along Cicero. Cars doubled and tripled parked on Cicero near Lake Street as a small liquor store was looted at 3:30. Ninety minutes later a larger liquor store near the same intersection was broken into on the east side of Cicero.

Earlier in the day, at around 1 p.m., people crowded around the Family Dollar at 4247 W. Madison St., as afternoon traffic slowed to a stand-still. A man with a large cardboard box crossed the street while commotion grew outside of the store. No police presence was detected in the area. About five minutes later, however, squad cars were seen speeding west on Washington Boulevard.

Teenagers piled out of the back seats of cars and into traffic when drivers could not park. Meanwhile on nearby side streets residents gathered on porches enjoying the cool, sunny afternoon.

Chicago police had a slight presence for much of Sunday afternoon though dozens of officers in riot gear made stands at two different spots on Madison Street. At 4 p.m. they were stretched across Madison at Ci-

“They shouldn’t be burning up shit,” one man standing on Madison, just east of Kostner, told a Chicago Tribune reporter. “I can’t even go the store now to (buy) liquor. All (that) is not going to help with nothing.”

Oak Park police blocked Chicago Avenue at Austin Boulevard before 3 p.m. to keep cars from entering the city. Oak Park Commander Dave Jacobson said the intersection had been blocked at the request of Chicago police “to try to calm things in Austin.”

Asked where problem spots existed there, Jacobson said, “pretty much in all of Austin.” Oak Park police were evident at the Austin Boulevard intersections at Madison Street and North Avenue, but as of late afternoon those intersections were open.

Second District Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deere, a longtime North Lawndale resident, took to his Facebook page on Sunday evening to remind people of Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s 9 p.m. curfew, which is in place

until 6 a.m. until further notice, her office said.

Karl Brinson, the president of the Westside Branch NAACP and a longtime Austin resident, said he was getting frequent calls about the looting. In response to the unrest, Brinson released a statement.

“Never burned one building or car. Never robbed or looted one store. Never destroyed this beautiful city but have effectively

worked to save the world. It is sad to watch as more Black lives are lost and property is destroyed,” Brinson said.

“Five years ago we made a clear and articulate request for police reform. For we could foresee actions like this on the horizon. As you know we have had to bring legal actions against the city, we uncovered and revealed your actions regarding a decades old, unjust collective bargaining agreement, and to date, no avail. We gave directions to save our city and it falls on deaf ears. Nothing we have asked for has ever been enacted.

Just words on words. Chicago is a leader in the nation with the strongest, most ignored consent decree in the country.”

Hours before the looting ramped up on Sunday, First District Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, a lifelong Austin resident, struck a note of resolve on his morning talk show.

“Though I find it difficult to rest in this moment, I do believe we can locate peace,” he said, addressing the national outrage that has followed the May 25 murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

“We can locate a level of rest that has been afforded those who maintain a position of privilege,” he said. “Even though sometimes it’s difficult to find rest in the literal sense, I do believe that there is a resolve that our people possess that allows for us to find comfort and solace even in the midst of turmoil.”

Austin man fatally shot in suburbs Hundreds of people converged Sunday afternoon on the area around Harlem Avenue and Cermak Road in suburban North Riverside, smashing their way into stores and looting them.

The man shot and killed at North Riverside Park Mall on Sunday afternoon was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as 22-year-old Myqwon Blanchard, of Austin. An autopsy was scheduled for June 1. Blanchard was not shot by police, authorities reported.

Moments after the first shots were heard, half dozen or more loud gunshots rang out as cars sped away toward the northeast exit drive of the mall.

Paramedics took Blanchard to the hospital after police and a nurse, who got out of a car to assist, performed CPR on him.

Another volley of gunfire could be heard coming from the west side of the mall property at about 2:55 p.m., but no one apparently was wounded in that instance.

West Side neighborhoods that never recovered from ’68 riots torn apart by looting, fires

‘History is just repeating itself’

Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s move to restrict access to Downtown moved both peaceful protests and looters to the neighborhoods Sunday, leaving West Siders to fend for themselves, leaders said.

In Black communities on Chicago’s West Side, the police, city officials and residents “lost total control of the situation,” said State Rep. La Shawn Ford. Police were nowhere to be seen, he said, and businesses were left to fend for themselves. Fires and looting destroyed longtime businesses.

“The police have decided that they’re not going to protect businesses on the West and South Sides of Chicago,” Ford said, who represents much of Austin. “They are now focused only on protecting businesses downtown after the looting happened to the central business district.”

Ford said it appeared police had “thrown their hands up” and weren’t protecting the small, family-owned business on the city’s underresourced West Side. Without access to the same insurance, capital and loans

big-box stores have, West Side businesses will struggle to rebuild, Ford said.

“It’s really an example of how the West and South Sides have been neglected by the city and state forever. … If you look at downtown, other communities, you’re going to see a huge police presence guarding those neighborhoods,” Ford said.

“And these communities are going to be the hardest hit and have the hardest

time recovering.”

Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Police Supt. David Brown denied these allegations Monday, saying the majority of police enforcement efforts were on the South and

West sides. Mayor Lightfoot also vowed to help rebuild these business districts.

Ald. Michael Scott (24th), who lives in North Lawndale, said the the riots, looting and burning of buildings across the West Side this weekend is a painful reminder of the violence that erupted in the area after the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968.

“I wish individuals knew or studied the history of North Lawndale. How in ’68 there were massive riots because of the assassination of MLK, and we suffered,” Scott said. “We tried to bring back the business corridors, and we were not successful.”

After the riots, many businesses in Garfield Park and North Lawndale were forced to close or burned down and the area never recovered. An abundance of vacant lots remain in the area from shops and homes that were burned down and never rebuilt.

Residents credit the riots with initiating a decades-long period of complete disinvestment by the city on the West Side.

“History is just repeating itself,” Scott said.

We may have nailed our own coffin

originally had high hopes for Mayor Lori Lightfoot. In her run to be mayor, when Toni Preckwinkle wouldn’t even come to the West Side for a debate, Lightfoot was here. And as the date for the election came near, she joined up with Willie Wilson and he helped push her acceptance as the candidate of choice. Many of us overlooked some things that might have bothered us about her, including not being a native Chicagoan, her history with law enforcement, and wariness over her sexual orientation agenda, and supported her candidacy.

I have been critical of what I perceive to be some missteps at a very basic level. She has not proven to be a calculating politician. And by calculating, I mean one who knows how to take advantage of the situation and put a spin on it to put herself

in the most positive light or brings this city together. Lightfoot hasn’t managed to turn herself into a beloved mayoral figure, respected by all, and one whose voice connected with the people to make her one of us.

I’m not a follower of every step she’s taken. But when her missteps do stick out, they are glaring. Like always seeming to find non-native Chicagoans to hire to be part of her administration. That was a sore point with me. She had some excellent opponents in the last mayoral election who she did not tap into for the greater good of this city.

Instead of recognizing the talent that is in Chicago and using those who have an understanding of the nuances of neighborhoods and especially of the black community in Chicago, she hit my last straw with her choice for the new superintendent of

police. With that decision, my new moniker for her became “One-Term Lori.”

For some reason, I wasn’t one of the ones who jumped on the Lori “memes” bandwagon that was all over the internet because of COVID-19. I found the messaging about the quarantine to be confusing. There were too many mixed messages being given out to a population where many did not understand how to fought a virus by remaining in the house. All they could hear was, “stay in the house, but OK to go out.” That kind of messaging didn’t get them in the mindset to quarantine.

This past Memorial Day weekend proved another classic misstep. Her pick for police superintendent didn’t properly plot out the kind of policing that would be needed for a three-day weekend where people had already been pretty much confined to the house.

But that boondoggle was only a precursor to the devastation that has hit this city, partly because of the protest over the mur-

der of George Floyd and partly because a lot of those generation-Xers who tore up the city grew up listening to their parents and grandparents talk about all the loot they got during the prior riots.

If one goes back in history, the last opportunity to riot in this city was after the Bulls won the championship in 1997. These young people have grown up on a steady diet of all the loot their relatives got. And they have been salivating. So the protest that began on Friday was the excuse for all the looting that took place on Saturday.

The rule has always been that when America gets a cold, the black community gets the flu. Add the coronavirus, and we were given a death sentence in terms of health. Now with the devastating destruction of many businesses within the black neighborhoods, we may be on our own when the time comes to rebuild.

Many areas on the West Side have never recovered from the 1968 riots. The 2020 riots may be the nail in our own coffin.

When will black deaths end?

The murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and most recently George Floyd, have sparked conversations about the racial violence experienced by Black communities.

While this is common knowledge among Black communities and advocacy communities, we are seeing the media cover it more extensively, reaching populations that may not have had the opportunity to be exposed to the inequities experienced by marginalized populations.

While some may deem this occurrence as an opportunity for much-needed reform within various systems in our country, I can’t help but think at what cost. Did it take the alarming deaths of these individuals to spark such a conversation? How many Black bodies must be laid in coffins for us as a nation to honestly acknowledge and address the racial violence that Black people have been screaming about from the rooftops of disinvested and segregated communities?

But this narrative of Black deaths being a necessary precursor to reform is far from new for this country. Black people have long had their bodies laid on the altar of American society to be sacrificed prior to reforming the many unjust systems that were compiled to create the foundation

of this nation. It takes the visual sight of our blood for this country to be pushed to the point of incrementally chipping away at the racist barriers that wall off Black people from the America that was reserved for White people.

It took the open casket of a teenage boy, Emmet Till, who was so brutally beaten and murdered beyond recognition for the nation to be shaken and forced to confront the racial violence experienced by Black people. It sparked an upsurge of activism and resistance that became known as the Civil Rights movement.

It took the graphic visual of seeing 16 shots unloaded into the small frame

of a teenage boy, Laquan McDonald, for the City of Chicago to confront the need to aggressively reform their police department and again forced the nation to confront the racial violence experienced

by Black people, sparking another upsurge of activism and resistance.

Now it is taking the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, for all Americans to re-evaluate our criminal justice system and again confront the racial violence experienced by Black people.

While I applaud our leaders and the media for putting the racial violence experienced by Black people at the

forefront, how many Black people have to die for our nation to acknowledge how racism is still sophisticatedly woven into the fabric of our society, stitched into our systems, its thread stained with the blood of so many Black people we have lost throughout this nation’s history?

Black communities can no longer be the designated casualties of creating a nation that provides freedom and justice for all.

Death can no longer be Black people’s prerequisite for Dignity.

America must value black lives

There have been countless news stories of black men and women dying senselessly at the hands of racism in America for far too long. Most recently, we are processing the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis who died under the knee of a white police officer resulting in massive protests and riots throughout the country.

The question on our minds, and we wonder how many other millennials, is when do we fight back? How and when do we seek justice for all the lives lost? And when will we have any opportunity in this country?

In 1955, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated when the history books are written, somebody will say, “There lived a race of people, black people … who had the moral courage to stand up for their rights. And thereby they injected a new meaning into the veins of history and civilization.”

It’s not enough to pay lawsuit settlements for the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and others lost to police brutality. There has to be more.

Many black millennials walk around neighborhoods terrified that the police can decide whether they live or die. We also walk around angry because we’re trying to build a future in the midst of so much doubt, despair and so little hope.

The FBI has reported that black men are the most likely to be targeted for senseless murder. When we hear about the death of a black community member, there is usually the assumption there is justice behind the act. The people who kill, dare not be killed. The people who investigate, dare not be investigated. The community who cries, dare not cry for help.

There must be effective, difference-making calls to action. We must begin conversations all over this country around race, equity, police brutality and decarceration, and we must become the voices for the voiceless.

We cannot forgot those killed senselessly over the years, including George, Ahmaud, Breonna, Eric, Freddie, Trayvon, Sandra, Michael, Laquan, Philando, Oscar, Tamir, Rekia, Sean, John, Walter, Jordan, Alton, Jonathan, Amadou, Jamar, Dantre, Anthony, Botham, Ramarley, Larry, Jocques, Timothy, Malissa, LaTanya, Marvin, Quintonio, Bettie, Emmett and so many more.

As Langston Hughes reminds us, “O let America be America again – The land that never has been yet – And yet must be. The land where every man is free. O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, and yet I swear this oath – America will be.”

Austin groups get ‘rapid response’ grants

Twenty-nine organizations awarded more than $100K in total grants from Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities program

Twenty-nine Austin community groups will receive more than $100,000 in grants from the Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities program.

The Austin organizations are among 164 groups throughout the West and South sides selected to receive a total of $1 million in grants.

Deborah Bennett leads the Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities, a strategy of the Partnership for Safe and Peaceful Communities. She described it as a “rapid response fund” for community organizations in areas with high levels of gun violence.

Grants from the Chicago Fund support organizations in “community building, peace building activities, activities that create safe spaces for young people,” Bennett said.

Organizations that are receiving the grants this year are trying to build a stronger sense of community in their neighborhood. Research has shown that “communities with strong bonds have less violence,” Bennett said.

Many of the groups have had to modify their original plans for the grant money to adapt to the challenges posed by COVID-19.

Debra Taylor, a leader of the 40+ Block Club, located on the 5900 block of West Ohio Street, said her group, which received $2,500, had to get creative.

One idea is to hold a community art show. The block club will provide each family with painting supplies and have them post the art they made outside

their home. Then “neighbors can kind of walk through and look at the different paintings and vote on the best painting,” Taylor said.

The Mayfield Community Garden, administered by Third Unitarian Church of Chicago, was already well suited to social distancing activities. Roger Masson, the garden chief, noted that during a recent volunteer day it was easy for people to maintain social distancing thanks to Mayfield’s two large gardens.

Mayfield Community Garden received $5,000, which Masson said will help implement irrigation for the garden and buy a shredder to turn the compost into top soil.

Additionally, a portion of their raised beds have been in use since the garden was started 11 years ago. They are starting to fall apart and need to be rebuilt.

The garden is important because it provides a break from daily pressures.

Masson said “gardening, being outside, doing some light exercise and all those kinds of things, that helps reduce stress.”

People need that now more than ever, he said.

The Mayfield Community Garden hosts monthly volunteer days. Some of the food grown is donated to Fraternité Notre Dame’s food pantry.

For Cardean Jenkins, vice president of the Austin Adams Block Club, the big concern has been consistency. They were trying to avoid a situation where “we have this great big event, and then we shut down and you don’t hear from us anymore until another year,” she said.

This year, they’ve pivoted from traditional block parties to activities such as showing movies in nearby parks. It allows people to maintain social distancing while still bringing them together.

Austin Coming Together assisted 24 Austin organizations, including the Austin Adams Block Club, in successfully applying for the grants.

Jai Jones, community engagement coordinator for ACT, said the Chicago Fund grants help people engage with one

another and hear each other’s story.

“This funding, it not only provides hope, but it provides opportunity for those who are doing good work to be able to continue the good work they’re doing,” Jones said.

Film festival curated by West Side students

WorldScene Film Festival features free

A virtual film festival developed by young people on the West Side showcased eight short films from around the world, including one film written and produced by the local teens.

The jury and creators of the WorldScene Film Festival are participants of BUILD Chicago’s Bridges to Pathways youth development program. The mentorship program uses restorative justice principles and workforce training to keep kids out of the criminal justice system and curb violence on the West Side.

Teens in the program organized last week’s film festival after a 14-week film immersion program in partnership with the International Children’s Media Center in River North. They watched 50 thoughtprovoking short films covering themes such as diversity, courage and empowerment while curating the festival.

Devon Tims, one of the mentors for the program, said it was eye-opening to see the emotional impact a film as short as three

“They were able to evaluate them and talk about how they related to these short films that they viewed,” Tims said.

Creating a short film was a new experience for many of the teens, requiring them to learn production and writing skills.

“It gave kids a vision of things they could

do that they had never done before,” Tims said. “And it has opened up the youth’s eyes to taking advantage of media and the power it has.”

The film they produced, “The Bystander,” is an anti-bullying drama that will premiere at the festival. It’s about the power young people have to shape the world around them

if they have the courage to stand up and speak out when they see something that isn’t right.

“Even if you’re not bullying a person, you can still affect what’s going on,” said Lamont, one of the teens who helped shoot the film. “If you’re not bullying, you should be the one to stop the bullying.”

Other shorts that were screened include South Korean animated film “Johnny Express,” French film “Graveland” and Australian sports movie “The Trophy Thief.”

The 90-minute screening of “The Bystander” and other films happened virtually each day at 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. After the screening, there was a conversation and analysis of the films with the youth participants and directors.

Viewers were able to vote online for their favorite films after the screening before a winner was named Best of Fest.
