Davis could face primary challenge in 2018 Anthony Clark, an Oak Park teacher, announced his plans to run for Congress last week By TIMOTHY INKLEBARGER Staff Reporter
Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th) could face a young primary challenger in the 2018 midterm elections. Anthony Clark, an Oak Park, high school teacher and founder of the advocacy group Suburban Unity Alliance announced in a May 17 Facebook post that he’s running for Congress. Reached by phone, Clark, 34, told Wednesday Journal that he was encouraged to run by several people in the community who connected him with an organization called Brand New Congress, which aims to fix a “broken” Congress, according to its website. “Both major parties have chosen big donors over the American people,” the Brand New Congress website states. “We are going to recruit and run hundreds of outstanding candidates in a single, national campaign for Congress in 2018. Together, they will pass a practical plan to significantly increase wages, remove corruption, and protect the rights of all Americans.” Clark said in a telephone interview that he has dedicated his life to giving back to the community, but he felt not enough was being done to address systemic issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia and misogyny. “I thought, ‘I have to do more,’” he said. Austin, Oak Park residents talk race, poverty The conversation was part of the Chicago Community Trust’s On the Table event By XUEER ZHANG AustinTalks
More than 150 people from Austin, Oak Park and across Chicago gathered on May 16 at Columbus Park Refectory, 5701 W
Jackson Blvd., to exchange ideas about racial integration and discussing the challenges faced by the two communities separated by Austin Boulevard. This is the third year The Chicago Community Trust has organized the On the Table event in which about 5,800 “tables” participated throughout the Chicago area. Sixteen of those were at Austin’s Columbus Park Refectory. Community advocates and residents voiced their concerns over the longstanding inequity and exclusion on Chicago’s
West Side, asking some hard-hitting questions that many avoid in their daily lives. “You can see how we end up having a huge division of resources,” said Rob Breymaier, the event co-organizer who spoke at the start of the dinner, referencing the long-existing segregation and its consequences on the area. “Right now, we look at our two communities and we can see we have one community with thriving schools and the other

ON THE TABLE Building bridges from page 1 where we are having challenges in schools,” he said. “A more integrated society we want is where we don’t have those disparities.” Breymaier, executive director of the Oak Park Regional Housing Center and a former president of the Chicago Area Fair Housing Alliance, said Tuesday night’s conversations between the two communities were intended to answer essential questions, such as how to “build one community” and “find our common destiny.” “The way our metropolitan areas are segregated makes us feel that some neighborhoods or some people are better, and some neighborhoods and people are not quite as good,” Breymaier said. “We need to figure out how to break that mindset. It’s perpetuated through the way we share resources – or do not share resources.” Robyn Thurston, 56, lives in Oak Park but works in Austin as a healthcare administrator. Although she lives only three blocks away from Austin and has driven past Columbus Park many times, she said this was the first time she had entered the building. “Almost 40 years, I never stopped in,” said Thuston, who moved to Oak Park from Kansas City in 1983. “I only rode my bike around the park one time. That’s because there’s a line between Austin and Oak Park.” Austin Boulevard – the north-south street that separates the two communities – sets nearly everything in Austin apart from Oak Park, from infrastructure, schools and business to security and racial makeup. Austin, the most-populated of Chicago’s 77 community areas, is about 84 percent African American and 4 percent white, while Oak Park is nearly 70 percent white, 22 percent African-American and 10 percent Hispanic or Latino, according to a 2016 analysis by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. Thuston said the street views changed dramatically as someone crosses into Austin from Oak Park. “Whenever there’s traffic congestion or construction, I’d drive on Madison or Jackson,” Thuston explained. “And as you leave Austin and enter Oak Park, it’s like from black and white to colors. That’s the contrast between the two communities.” She said she’s seen instances of the Oak Park police indiscriminately pulling over vehicles traveling from Austin – an act so frequent that a neighbor of hers started to call it the “border patrol protecting” Oak Park. What’s more, she said, the lack of integration as well as the huge disparity between the two communities had caused trouble for residents and employees in both Austin and Oak Park as young people from both communities interact. “One of my daughter’s boyfriends was shot here visiting a high school friend graduating from Austin High,” Thuston said, referring to a shooting that happened about 7 years ago in Austin. She said young African Americans living in Oak Park are affected in ways their white
peers are not. “One of my church members, a Caucasian couple, adopted three black children,” she said. “Their son and his friends were just standing in front of the house that they grew up in and would be questioned by the police.” She suspects this happened because they were seen as “black children on the wrong side of Austin Boulevard” even though they lived in Oak Park. “That psychological barrier was very real,” Thuston said. “I feel like they will be safer in one community if this community (Austin) was safer. It really could realize its potential.” Willie Holman, 54, now on disability and retired, has lived in Austin for more than a decade. Holman agrees racial tensions still happen in both communities, saying it’s caused by a harmful policing system and too many unfinished or abandoned projects in Austin. “You know where the crime is located,” he said. “But the officers who have racial problems are not going to serve the community but hurt the community. If you are not mentally ready and devoted to help people, it’s not going to work.” Holman said another big problem is the chronic absence of economic development and ways to help people who moved into Austin after many of the city’s housing projects were torn down. “They put certain things in certain areas,” he said. “If you tore down a parking, you just pass it to another community. It’s really like a jungle, every man for himself.” “You got halfway houses and you got mental facilities closed,” Holman. “There’s one closed right on Central [Avenue]. And we also have a halfway house at the old YMCA. People are going to understand it’s like they are dumping people off in Austin.” Holman suggested his own way of facilitating integration, adding that the “biggest step is, when you see a black person or a white person coming to your neighborhood, say ‘Hi.’ “Just say ‘Hi’ and don’t get mad if that person doesn’t speak because you are doing it from your real heart. And how can you judge a race if you don’t know the race?” Olivia Weathers, the director of operations at Communities First Association, has worked in Austin for a year. The 24-year-old South Side resident offered another idea of how to improve Austin. “I think that we should start changing the narrative of Austin, to look at how it’s extremely rich in resources,” Weathers said. “Now that I work in this community, I see a strong sense of pride. Tensions start to happen when you’re put in the situation of poverty. “People in Austin kind of know what they need,” she said. “But there’s a lot of community work to be done.” Thuston agrees, adding that Austin’s indigenous resources have not been fully utilized. “Beautiful, old, historic housing is here in Austin,” she said. “Chicago is not taking advantage of the historical heritage of this community.” The conversations that happened for a few hours Tuesday night are an effective way to facilitate understating and build relationships, participants said. and all people whose origins are Mother Africa, we can be inspired by the red, black and green of the Pan-African flag. The Pan-African colors on the flag represent values, history and resources that can guide us: Red represents the blood that unites all people of Black African ancestry, and was shed for liberation. Black represents black people whose existence as a nation, though not just a nation-state, is affirmed by the existence of the flag. And green represents the abundant natural wealth of Africa. Along with recognizing, valuing and celebrating our heritage, we can also realize that our United States Constitution was ordained and established so we could form a more perfect union, a blend of peoples from all over our world, a mixture of colors, with the common vision and goal of liberty and justice for all. Dr. King gave his life 49 years ago promoting the principles of nonviolent activism to advance a more perfect union. Let us always remember the teachings of Dr. King and the values represented by the colors of our flag as we work for liberty and justice for all. This letter has been shortened to for print. Facebook Live is making progress after demands
L
ast week, Facebook’s top policy officers traveled to Chicago to meet with the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., and myself. We had a remarkably productive meeting, and the company has pledged to continue working with us. The company will return later this month to visit several high schools in Chicago. The goal will be to educate teenagers how to report and what exactly should be reported to Facebook. I am confident this open dialogue will help confirm the importance of civility on social media with the young people we will meet with. Additionally, the company announced that it will hire an additional 3,000 employees to monitor reported images and videos. This is a huge success. Though the company isn’t yet sure where those employees will be headquartered, I’ve RICHARD BOYKIN made the case that many of them should Cook County Commissioner be from some of the Chicago communities with the highest unemployment. Facebook has remained in the headlines the last several weeks for a series of horrific tragedies being streamed on its platform. That is why I joined Rev. Jackson and Father Michael Pfleger to call on a 30-day moratorium on Facebook live. Though the company has not yet agreed to a moratorium, it has been remarkably responsive to our concerns. I spoke to top executives at the company several times last month. They have made crucial commitments to find ways to curb the spreading of violent acts on Facebook and Facebook live. The company has agreed to do a series town halls in high schools in Chicago. This letter has been shortened to for print. Visit austinweeklynews.com to read the letter in full.

Alderman honors veterans for their military service
Ald. Chris Taliaferro, a former vet himself, commemorated Memorial Day early By WENDELL HUTSON Contributing Reporter
Two weeks before the country officially honors veterans on Memorial Day, Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) joined representatives from a hospice care provider to honor veterans living at an Austin nursing home. A group of veterans at the Mayfield Care Center, 5905 W. Washington Blvd., met last week with Taliaferro and David Cazaplicki and Carrie Datz from Heartland during a 2-hour celebration that included refreshments and each veteran receiving a certificate of recognition. A veteran himself after serving in the U.S. Marines, Taliaferro said he wanted to recog-
nize his local veterans before Memorial Day because veterans deserve to be honored every day. “We should not go a long time without recognizing our veterans. And certainly we should not wait until Memorial Day to recognize our veterans,” said Taliaferro. “Their work and labor for this country is enough to always recognize them.” Veteran James Bradley said one reason why veterans are not recognized for their service more is because people don’t really know what they do. “The duties and role of military personnel is not publicized like it should. If people knew what veterans went through while serving our country they would be thanking us every day,” said Army veteran Bradley, 85. “We have killed for this country. We have been injured for this country and even died for this country. And all we get is one day a year to be honored.” Datz, who has served in the National Guard for the past 13 years, moderated the event.
“Our veterans deserve this [recognition ceremony] and more needs to be done to show how much they are appreciated for their sacrifices,” said Datz. “It’s always a joy when I can participate in programs that honor our veterans and the work they have done.” Andrea Williams, activity director for the Mayfield Center, organized the event and said she plans to make it an annual celebration. “I’ve only been working here a short while but I do know that our veterans deserve this and I will work to make sure this continues each year,” said Williams. “While this gesture is nice I don’t think we, as citizens, will ever be able to do enough to thank our veterans for their sacrifices. That’s why we [as a country] should be honoring them every chance we get.” However, Williams said she is bothered by the violence in Austin, which prevents residents at the facility from going outside. “We can’t have them sitting outside if there’s shooting going on. No one wants to be inside
all the time,” she added. “A breath of fresh air is needed but that’s not possible when there’s violence plaguing our neighborhood.” Taliaferro agreed. “We have to get back to community policing if we are going to curb violence. We can reduce violence with more community policing, more resources for the police and more involvement from the community,” said Taliaferro. Emanuel Carter, another veteran at the Mayfair Center, said he served in the Army and fought in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. “I am not afraid of violence because I have seen it up close in combat when I had to step over dead bodies,” recalled Carter. “Yes, there’s a lot of shooting that takes place on the West Side, but it’s nothing compared to being in the military. Anybody that survived being in the military should be recognized and honored all the time.” CONTACT: wreporter@yahoo.com

“I don’t see how anyone can try to position themselves to the left of him,” Boykin said. “There’s nowhere else to go. He’s got that space already and he’s done a tremendous job as a U.S. Congressman. But this is democracy and we all welcome those who would put themselves forward for public service.” Clark said he is running as a Democrat but is not afraid to take on members of his own party if they put partisan politics before constituents. He described Brand New Congress as post-partisan. “I’m ready and willing to hold anybody accountable,” he said. Clark is one of seven candidates endorsed by Brand New Congress, the only candidate running in Illinois, so far. Clark said other Illinois Brand New Congress candidates are in the works, but none are yet ready to announce their candidacies. Michael Romain contributed to this article. gress website stating that he aims to end partisan politics in Congress in an effort to bring the nation “together and celebrate our common dreams.” “When we do this, we realize that we are all part of the same humanity,” Clark stated in the online profile. Clark says he founded the local Suburban Unity Alliance in 2016 “to work to end discrimination in our communities and to help fund good causes that may need a helping financial hand.” Clark says that’s why he led a delegation of the Women’s March in Chicago and collaborated with the Women’s March D.C. and “fought hard for the Welcoming Village ordinance recently passed in Oak Park.” “We must embrace diversity,” he says on the Brand New Congress webpage. Clark’s LinkedIn profile page notes that he has worked as a special education teacher at Oak Park and River Forest High School since 2013. His work history notes that he worked in special education at other Chicago area schools beginning in 2009, including Banner West Academy, Aspira Mirta Ramirez High School and Kenwood Academy High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 2003 to 2009. Clark said in an interview that he will not run a negative campaign against his opponent, Congressman Danny Davis, who is currently in his 10th term in that office. Davis was first elected in 1996. “I truly thank Danny for everything he’s done for Chicago and the surrounding communities,” Clark said, but added that it is “time for a change.” In a phone interview last Friday, Davis said he doesn’t know Clark but added that he welcomes the competition, particularly if it will increase voter participation in the midterm elections. Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin (D-1st), who once served as Davis’ chief of staff, described the incumbent as a liberal Democrat, not a moderate.

‘Burning Sands’ solid, but nothing new
The Netflix original film doesn’t shed much new light on black fraternity life By ROBERT FELTON Contributor
Fraternity life has a long history within the world of cinema. From the jovial silliness of “Animal House” to more somber, harrowing fare like “Goat,” the movie industry has often returned to the legendarily subversive practices of these collegiate staples to tell tales that feed the culture’s fascination with the institution. Now comes the original Netflix production “Burning Sands,” which is the latest incarnation of this well-established sub-genre. Unfortunately for the filmmakers and the movie’s talented cast, it does not quite earn its place at the table alongside the best that the genre has to offer. The film stars Trevor Jackson as Zurich, a bright, talented student at a fictional HBCU called Frederick Douglass University. Seeking to follow in his father’s and mentor’s footsteps and join their prestigious fraternity, he becomes one of six pledges vying for a spot in Lambda Phi, one of the oldest frats on campus.
In order to join the ranks of his father and Dean Richardson (Steve Harris), he has to survive “Hell Week,” a week-long series of hazing and assorted physical challenges to test his loyalty to the fraternity. Some of the challenges are benign, like fast food runs and learning the four tenets of the fraternity — “Leadership,” “Scholarship,” “Companionship,” and “Brotherhood.” Others are more disturbing like having a metal rod run over the bottom of one’s foot or being slapped, pushed or spit upon when one gets an answer wrong about the history of the fraternity. He is aware of the physical and emotional toll the process will take on him, but in the beginning he shakes off the early signs of trouble. His equally studious girlfriend Rochon (Imani Hakim) begins noticing troubling signals as Zurich is slowly becoming more indifferent toward his classwork and has strange injuries on his ribs. His professor (played by Alfre Woodard,
who the film, unfortunately, underutilizes) sees the potential in Zurich and encourages him to open up about his withdrawn behavior in class. Due to the relative darkness of its depiction of its familiar material, it’s obvious from the start that “Burning Sands” has to follow a specific trajectory: wide-eyed optimism about joining the fraternity, followed by doubt, followed by reinvestment in the process, followed by denial and, finally, disillusionment. He eventually realizes that there is something seriously wrong with this fraternity’s hazing practices, but since it takes Zurich about an hour longer than it does us, the film loses much of its intended impact. One of the key problems with the film is the fact that it never really gives Zurich a compelling reason to endure the torment of the initiation beyond deference for his father and mentor. The film needed to show more of the allure of the fraternity.

ENRICHMENT GUIDE
• Is your school having an open house? • What classes do you offer?
Why do these guys go through this torture? It certainly isn’t just to stomp shirtless in a line while yelling: “Whooooooo!” What does Zurich stand to gain from initiation and loose from failure? The movie is very vague about it. The film also doesn’t do a great job of declaring a position on the subject of fraternity hazing. It clearly seems to be making an argument against it, as the fairly bleak ending seems to suggest, but it never really forms a crystalized message. A few scenes before the ending when Zurich has become completely disillusioned with the process, we begin to expect a full repudiation of the fraternity. His confrontation with his dean, his initial blowing off of his fellow pledgers and somewhat hammy speech about “King’s” appear to suggest that he is finally ready to move on from the fraternity. But then he winds up attending the final night of “Hell Night” anyway. Why? The film doesn’t seem to know and we’re left with a truly muddled message. We are forced to fill in the blanks for the narrative. This film fails to bring anything new to an already pretty crowded table on fraternity life. If it had better focus of its message and shown more of Zurich’s inner conflict, it would have been a soaring success. CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

The Greater West Side
hat comes to mind when you hear the words, the “Greater West Side”? According to On the Table, an event I attended last week, sponsored by the Chicago Community Trust along with the Oak Park Regional Housing Center (OPRHC), the village of Oak Park, and Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, there is a desire to be in partnership as one and referred to as “The Greater West Side.” For landlocked Oak Park, a bastion of liberalism, the potential partnership makes sense. Oak Park is bordered on the west by River Forest and Forest Park. To the south, it has Cicero and Berwyn. All good neighbors, but the advantages to the village lie in its eastern/northern neighbor: Austin. Why Austin? It’s simple. We share many of the same major thoroughfares, the Green and Blue el lines, the same Metra Line, and we were once all part of Cicero Township until 1899 when Austin was annexed to the city of Chicago. Ever since I moved to Austin in 1989, I have heard the gossip that Oak Park wanted to come back into Chicago up to Central Avenue. It was a persistent rumor that I couldn’t ignore, having spent my formative years in Cabrini Green, which had a similar rumor in the 1960s. It took 50 years, but the rumor for Cabrini has become a total reality. So as I sat at The Refectory listening to a multiracial group out of Oak Park speak on the issue, I knew I needed to pay intense attention. Many of the people who live in Austin don’t see the beauty and advantage of this neighborhood. They are in such survival mode that their priority is just making it from week-to-week. Many of them haven’t paid attention to the shift from the suburbs back to the city by young whites. Instead, black people are leaving the city in droves for the suburbs. Or they are leaving the state to go back down south. The solution for city planners is where will all those whites go? There is a limited amount of
land and gentrification is the perfect mechanism to push poor people out. Once blacks are pushed out of Austin, they are out of the city with few options to return. Oak Park and Austin going into a partnership can have the potential for success for both sides so long as the issue is addressed with intention. That is one of the things the Oak Park Regional Housing Center is known for. Going back to the 1960s when racial strife was at its forefront, OPRHC was up front in making sure the same blockbusting that was happening in Chicago didn’t occur in Oak Park. Whites were encouraged to move and live near the Austin Boulevard side, and blacks were encouraged to move deeper into Oak Park. I can still recall the controversy that took place in the 1960s and ’70s over such honesty. In the end, Oak Park has remained viable because of that intentional intersection of race and housing, even if in doing so their efforts may skirt legality. Austin could benefit from an infusion of people with more money. Many whites would jump at the opportunity to own houses at the prices currently in Austin. The problem that comes with increased property changing hands is the tax assessment for current homeowners, based on the perceived value that someone can purchase your house for over what you actually paid for it. While that model make have worked in the past, it was best designed for moderate increases. For someone who bought their house for say $50,000 to have to pay taxes based on an assessed value of $350,000 simply because the house next door sold for that amount is intrinsically unfair. All it does is lead to gentrification which moves existing residents out. And please, I don’t want to hear about a long-term resident’s tax break because it doesn’t really resolve the basic issue — which is the lack of affordability for current residents. Next week, I’ll further address the pros and cons of the Greater West Side.
