A ‘farm lab’ grows in Chicago
Urban farm — right outside of Austin — teaching students, building community By TIMOTHY INKLEBARGER
O
Staff Reporter
n a windy Saturday morning at a former soccer field in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood, just outside of Austin, students from Prosser Career Academy (which boasts students from the West and South Sides) and neighbors from the surrounding area have gathered to begin their work digging in the soil. The students and residents have assembled here for a variety of reasons but all with the same end game – to get something growing. Within weeks, the space will be teeming with corn, collard greens, lettuce, tomatoes and just about anything you can imagine. Chicago Farm Lab, located in Hanson Park, is in its fourth season and is described by one of its founders, Marnie Ware, a Prosser science teacher, as “two acres of fenced-in gorgeousness.” Ware gives direction to her high school students, planting a tree near one of the entrances of the urban farm. They’re trying to make it the same distance as another tree already installed there. “What do you guys think?” she asks students Daniela Barrera, a 15-year-old sophomore, Christopher Rodriguez, a 17-year-old junior, and others as they place the tree. “Is it the right distance to make it symmetrical?” Another student uses the handle of a shovel to measure off distance between the tree and entrance. “You are so freaking innovative,” Ware said, praising the teen. Maurice Person, 28, of North Lawndale, had been bouncing around from one temporary job to another and exhausted from “a thousand” fruitless interviews when an old friend recommended on Facebook that he look up an organization called Cara. Founded in 1991 by entrepreneur and philanthropist Tom Owens, the organiza-
tion offers job training and employment to people who, like Person, traditional employers may consider untouchable. Person had been to state prison for 10 months in 2013. He has three felonies on his record, all of them drug-related, he said, matter-of-factly, when asked about his background last week. “I haven’t seen a jail since then,” Person said, with a not insignificant measure of pride that was tinged with a steely resolve. And he has no plans of going back anytime
soon. That much he didn’t have to say, because it was communicated in the tone and tenor of his voice. Person is married and has three children. The West Side native wore a bright green t-shirt, a gray vest and a gray hat, both bearing the name Cleanslate — one of Cara’s many subsidiary programs. URBAN LAB
Digging the soil from page 1 These are the kinds of real-world decisions students are challenged to make at Farm Lab, where they’ve seen the fruits of their labor evolve over the last several years. For Ware, Chicago Farm Lab is more than just a space for learning – it’s a revolution, a challenge to the status quo. “Modern people have been divorced from just how things are done,” Ware said. “How things are made. “We’ve been domesticated to the point where we don’t understand natural systems, and how can we expect our kids to solve problems like global climate disturbance when we’re not trying to do it? Another part of this is, OK, how can I say I’m a biology teacher if I don’t know how to grow a plant?” Prosser, one of Chicago’s few public vocational schools, provides courses in trades. Several of the students at Chicago Farm Lab are on the culinary track. Ware describes Daniela Barrera as a “rock star” culinary student. She’s been working at the urban farm since last year, and this season is one of the few students given her own raised bed. It’s one of 24 plots, which are mainly provided to residents in the neighborhood. This year she’s planting watermelon and strawberries. “I just like fruit,” she said. It’s her first run at growing watermelon; last year she grew strawberries but the yield was small – only two. Barrera says she wants to be a chef someday and own her own restaurant, but still is uncertain what kind of food she would specialize in. “I’m still planning what I’m going to do,” she said, adding that Chicago Farm Lab is not only good for learning lessons about growing – it’s brought her closer to her fellow classmates. “I get to meet people I don’t really talk to in class,” she said. Building community is part of the mission of Chicago Farm Lab, between students and the larger community, according to Ware. “This is a collaborative space; there are artifacts of collaboration everywhere,” she said. “It’s an authentic collaborative space between students, kids, community members – everyone is a part of this.” The efforts to grow the farm have been no small task. Ware and her colleagues have worked to secure participatory budgeting funds from Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th) and continue to seek money wherever they can. Kimbal Musk, brother of famed entrepreneur Elon Musk, has contributed through his nonprofit organization Big Green, donating modular garden plots to the lab. It’s part
of the technology focused direction Ware and others at Prosser want to take the curriculum. “My big dream is that Prosser, and other teachers in my building have this similar dream, that Prosser be an urban agricultural hub, that we have urban agricultural classes and vocational shops,” Ware said. “Like an updated sort of green technology.” She said the school’s Careers to Education program focuses on getting students jobs in various trades. With the changing nature of such trades, however, the schools need to keep up in preparing students for jobs of the future. The school is partnering with ComEd on educating students on learning solar technology, for example. “I have this really big sort of agenda to make urban agriculture, solar technology, hydroponics, those types of things, to update Prosser,” she said, adding that the school faculty is “just so passionate about updating.” “This should be an agricultural hub in Hanson Park,” she said. Though Farm Lab is opening new opportunities to students, it’s also bringing residents closer together in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood. Sydney Prise said he and his wife, Kathy Rosenfeld, have been coming to Chicago Farm Lab for a couple of years. This year they’re growing tomatoes. Prise said the space is more than just a place to come get your hands dirty. “I think gardening is activism,” he said, calling it “revolutionary.” “I think the future of the cities is going to be more like the country, and we need to start dealing with the fact that instead of battling over this or that political issue, which are important in the moment, we have to start talking about the survival of our people, of

Prise said gardening and learning to do for one’s self is a non-partisan issue – something that we can all agree on. “It’s the kind of activism that unites rather than divides, and I think that’s sorely lacking now,” he said. “Anybody can dig in the soil and make something happen.” CONTACT: tim@oakpark.com

Number of patrol cops down on West Side
Chicago Sun-Times report highlights 17-month decrease despite hiring spree
Convenient to Austin at 1331 S 55th Court in Cicero, south of The Eisenhower just off Central Avenue.
By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
According to a May 4 Chicago Sun-Times report, the Chicago Police Department has fewer beat cops today than the department had when they hired an additional 1,400 cops roughly two years ago. Those extra officers, which the Sun-Times notes have “outpaced the 862 retirements from the department during the same period,” were placed into the academy between October 2016 and March. Some of the districts that experienced the greatest decrease in beat cops during that period are located on the West Side. Chicago Police Department Supt. Eddie Johnson said that most of those new hires had not yet been assigned to districts According to data released by CPD after a public records request the Sun-Times made under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, the 10th, 11th and 15th Districts all sustained net losses of beat cops from Oct. 19, 2016 to March 29, 2018. The 10th, 11th and 15th Districts had a net loss of 29, 32 and 10 beat cops, respectively, during that 17-month period, according to the Sun-Times analysis. “The number of beat cops assigned to districts citywide was 6,046 as of March 29,” the paper’s analysis showed. “That was a drop of nearly 200 officers since October 2016, when there were 6,244 beat cops on patrol in districts.” The Sun-Times also showed that during that 17-month period, “the city’s police districts added many sergeants, lieutenants and field training officers in the first year of the planned two-year hiring surge.”

SURGE OR NO SURGE?: The number of beat cops are down across the city, the SunTimes reports. The number of sergeants went from 635 to 669, the number of lieutenants went from 147 to 188 and the number of field training officers went from 103 to 305, the Sun-Times reported. Barbara West, the former 15th District commander who is currently chief of the Bureau of Operational Development, told the Sun-Times that the additional supervisors will be necessary to “mentor and guide” the new beat cops before they’re assigned to districts. Gardening icon Mary Peery honored in Heroes Park The Austin Green Team founder, who died last year at 9l, gets honored in the memorial she created By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
For years, Mary Peery — the revered founder of the Austin Green Team and perhaps the West Side’s most prolific planter — presided regally over these brick-laying memorials at Heroes Park, on the corner of Washington and Laramie. The bricks are reserved for local community leaders who have died and left enduring legacies on the West Side. On May 19, Peery, who died in November at 91, now has a brick of her own in the garden. Others honored Saturday
“Austin has always been part of me and I think this is a befitting honor for him and for the number of years he worked in Austin,” Ervin said. “This is really an honor for him and for the work that he’s done.” Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th), a former Chicago police officer, said
on Saturday that he recalled Claudell Ervin from his days as on the force. Ervin said that Ervin was his commander at the police academy. He really laid the foundation for all police officers coming through that training academy that he commanded,” Taliaferro said of Ervin. “He talked about respect and how we would have to give it in order to get it from others. I took that with me throughout my whole career.” When it was time to rest Peery’s brick, the largest of them all, into its cavity, a groundskeeper broke his mallet. “Stubborn, just like Mary,” someone quipped, inciting laughter — the tears, having been shed earlier in the ceremony.

Community members light a peace torch, once carried by Mary Peery, during Saturday’s event in Heroes Park, where Peery, the memorial garden’s founder, now has a brick in her honor. Peery, the founder of the Austin Green Team, died last year at 91. “There’s a little joke,” said George Lawson, a member of the Austin Green Team. “I used to tell Mary where I wanted my brick to go. Mary would say, ‘Don’t worry about it. They’ll find a space for you.’ Now I have the honor of giving Mary’s brick. There are so many of you here to honor Mary, as if she’s here herself.” CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

BIG WEEK I
A few side notes on the royal wedding
watched the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle this past weekend. I wasn’t able to see the live broadcast. However, thanks to modern technology, I did find an online site that had the ceremony available for view. I thought everything about the ceremony was wonderful. I love the way she came down the aisle by herself and was momentarily escorted by Prince Charles. That action sent a message to the world that she was being accepted by the family as a new member of the royal household. As many people know by now, Meghan’s mother is black and her father is white. An interesting side note is that Meghan is being called “biracial” because her appearance is more that of a white woman with a tan, whereas former president Obama, who had the exact same situation with a white mother and a black father, was labeled “black.” As I watched the wedding, I wasn’t focusing on the clothing. And though the ceremony was refreshing, with contributions by a black pastor, choir, and cellist, none of that fascinated me. What did? My attention was drawn to the location more than anything else. I decided to do a bit of research about it. St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle was built in the 14th century. It still functions as a chapel to this day, hosting services every Sunday and tours throughout the week. It is also a burial ground. Of all the British royalty entombed there, King Henry VIII is the most recognizable! As I read
further down the list of other notables for whom the chapel served as final resting place, one named stuck out for me: Dejazmatch Alemayehu Tewodros, better known as His Imperial Highness Prince Alemayehu of Ethiopia (23 April 1861 - 14 November 1879). How did a member of the royal Ethiopian family end up being entombed there? In 1868, the young Prince’s father lost a battle with England and as his castle was being invaded, he committed suicide. The young prince was brought to England by a British sea captain, Tristram Speedy. Once in England, the young prince was introduced to Queen Victoria who took an interest in him and his subsequent education. He attended a number of British schools, including an officer training school at the Royal Military College. Being one of the few blacks in Britain, he was constantly the recipient of attention because of his skin color. In 1879, he contracted pleurisy. Six weeks later, even though he had been attended to by some of the best physicians in England, he died. Queen Victoria arranged that he be buried at Windsor Castle. I hadn’t known anything about the Ethiopian prince until I began to look into the history of the chapel where Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding took place. It is an interesting side note to a very wonderful occasion.

‘Blues For Mister Charlie’ burns with intensity
ames Baldwin, mid-century African-American novelist and essayist, wrote only two plays. Blues for Mister Charlie is one of them. We are fortunate that the intrepid new Echo Theater Collective has mounted a production in our community at Madison Street Theater, in Oak Park. This seldom-revived 1964 drama still burns intensely. The production which ended last week, was shocking — perhaps in some ways more now than 54 years ago with its nonstop use of the “n-word” and its outspoken racist banter. The plot depicts the attitudes of the early ’60s when racist bigotry was commonly believed to be strictly a phenomenon of the Deep South. Kamau “Maui” Jones, the ambitious director, and his large company of both seasoned professionals and hard-working newcomers, have mounted a passionate production of a loosely structured play that was clearly ahead of its time in its harsh depiction of racist oppression. Baldwin wrote his novelistic script in 1963 during a horrific time — when President John F. Kennedy was killed, Civil Rights worker Medgar Evers was murdered, and eight black girls died when their Montgomery, Alabama church was dynamited. Although it occurred 9 years earlier, the playwright also wanted to present his take on the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Chicagoan visiting family in Mississippi when he was brutally murdered for allegedly offending a white woman grocery storekeeper. His white attackers went free. The atrocity was one of the sparks that ignited the Civil Rights Movement.
Trent Williams is full of energy as Richard, a young man somewhat older than Emmett Till. This pastor’s son had been up north for a few years where he became a drug addict. Now back home and “clean,” he seethes with rebelliousness. He vows never to act in a subservient way to anyone. But as a black young man, his behavior is interpreted as oversexed, cocky, and dangerous. Chris Bruzzini solidly portrays the poor, dullwitted racist store owner, Lyle Britten. He is both frightening and sad. Bruzzini gives us a nicely shaded Britten, with a disturbing amount of human decency. Lyle Britten desperately needs power over anyone he sees as lesser, including his wife. We know from scene one that Richard is dead and that Lyle has murdered him, so the plot holds few surprises. Many performances are outstanding, such as Richard’s love interest, played by Jasmyne McDonald and his concerned grandmother, portrayed by Sydney Paige Milligan. P.J. Destin is Rev. Meridian Henry. Cynthia Martz is the white grocery store clerk married to bigoted Lyle Britten. Edward Voci is credible and intelligent as a progressive white newspaper editor, the one man with genuine friends on the black side of town. He conveys a touching decency. “Mister Charlie” was a phrase once used by African Americans to refer to white folks. So the title suggests a sad song for the white man’s moral crisis. There are clear links to our current political climate though some of the once eye-opening message now sound preachy. Though at over 3 hours, this three-act show is too

CLEANSLATE Expansion from page 1 W. Lake St., Cara announced that it was expanding Cleanslate’s Ward by Ward initiative by establishing a cleanup crew assigned to the 29th Ward. The first Ward by Ward crew launched this past August in the 27th Ward through sponsorships from a variety of organizations, including The Habitat Company. The crew in Austin was the result of more than $300,000 in private donations from a group of philanthropists. The money, stretched over a 3-year period, should help Cleanslate pay for 60 crew jobs, the organization’s officials said during last Thursday’s press conference. The premise of Cleanslate is simple. Offer minimum wage jobs cleaning up troubled neighborhoods to some of the least employable people in the city — most of them from the very neighborhoods they’ll be working on — so that they can at least gain some employment history. The ultimate goal, Cleanslate officials said, is to help them find employment in higher-paying, more permanent jobs. Person said that within three years he envisions himself getting a salary and good benefits in the construction or janitorial sectors. “This was something that I saw that really impacts people,” said 29th Ward Ald. Chris Taliaferro on Thursday. “It’s not just about getting them a job,” he said. “Cara teaches. It’s so easy to get a job in many cases, but sometimes it’s hard to keep a job or to move to a better opportunity. I thank you for looking at folks that some folks won’t even look at twice and making sure they’re able to provide for their families.”

Alderman Chris Taliaferro, left, shakes hands with Tom Owens last Thursday, during a special kick-off event for Cleanslate at Austin Town Hall Park in Austin. Brady Gott looks on. Taliaferro said that he was prompted to start thinking about how to “change the narrative” on the West Side after driving on Central Avenue and seeing someone in a car in front of his vehicle throw trash onto the street. According to Cleanslate’s managing director, Brady Gott, the alderman met with Cara officials about possibly setting down roots in Austin roughly a month ago. Gott said he plans to work with area nonprofits, such as Austin Coming Together, to help recruit West Side residents for Cleanslate. Kristi McKenzie, a recruitment specialist, said that individuals can call Cara’s admissions office and “within a day or two” a specialist will follow-up. “We’ll ask a few questions over the phone to make sure
slowly paced, it is still a solid production and we are fortunate to have the Echo Theater Collective revive an important, seldom-seen work in our community. The Echo Theater Collective was established in January 2017 to “redefine community theater by choosing works that give voice to those in our community who need it the most.” Through theater and music, the collective is “designed to promote unity and cultural understanding.” Echo Theater Collective is run by Artistic Director Kamau “Maui” Jones and an executive board.
the person is eligible,” McKenzie said. “The person needs to have a stable place to live, even if it’s a shelter, and needs to be able to pass a drug test. They can’t have extremely violent convictions or anything sexual, but drug charges, misdemeanors — those are acceptable.” Sam Lovett, 58, and a crew chief with Cleanslate, said that his crew will be in the 29th Ward three days a week cleaning sidewalks, removing graffiti, landscaping, power washing and similar beautification tasks. Lovett said that he was released from prison last year and has been with Cleanslate since July. He was incarcerated for wire fraud, forgeries and other white-collar crimes. “I was apprehensive about where I was going to get a job and a friend of mine, who was a crew chief also, told me about this,” Lovett said. “I started as an intern and they saw something in me and promoted me.” In a statement, Mark Toriski, Cara’s marketing and communications manager, said that since it’s founding in 2005, Cleanslate has “cleaned up more than 850,000 trash bags and more than 275,000 bags of recycling in 33 Chicago neighborhoods and suburban communities.” Toriski said that Cleanslate has created more than 2,700 traditional jobs, with 986 participants “securing permanent or long-term employment through their involvement with the social enterprise.” Lovett, reinforcing Taliaferro’s point, said that his time with Cara has been deeper than a paycheck. “Besides being a supervisor I also mentor a lot of the workers,” he said. “I enjoy that. The other work I did I was a little more selfish. It was just about me. I enjoy helping young, black men. The odds are against them, but I’m proof that you can turn your life.” For more info on Cleanslate’s Ward by Ward initiative, visit cleanslatechicago.org or call (312) 226-6361. Ready for Action
undreds of Austin residents have been working with Austin Coming Together and other local public, private, and non-profit leaders for over a year to create one plan for Austin. Our goal is for the “Quality of Life Plan” to help shape how our community develops over the next 5 years. We have been hosting summits, organizing meetings, and engaging in debate. We have discussed how to propel the Austin community into the future while remaining rooted in our rich past. We have discussed how to grow the economy without leaving our neighbors behind. From issues like housing to education, economic development, and public safety, we want to address a comprehensive set of issues that impact our community. The goals, strategies, and projects of the plan are outlined on the following pages of this document. We ask you take the time to review them and provide your feedback on Saturday June 2nd at Michele Clark High School at 5101 W Harrison. We’ve been planning for over a year and are now ready to take action. We want you join us, and the hundreds of Austin community members, as we embark on this journey to build community and create change together!

Second Annual Summer of Opportunity: June Event Highlights the Positives on the West Side
O
By Lacey Sikora
n Friday, June 22, the second Summer of Opportunity kicks off in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. Beginning at 9 a.m. with a parade down Madison Street from Cicero to Columbus Park, the day of festivities will take place from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Columbus Park. Once again, the Summer of Opportunity is led by community-based BUILD, a fortyeight-year-old, not-for-profit organization which works on Chicago’s West and South sides in youth development and violence intervention. In partnership with other stakeholders involved in the Austin Quality of Life Plan, BUILD is looking to build on the success of last year’s inaugural Summer of Opportunity, and change the narrative of the Austin community. Bradly Johnson, BUILD’s Director of Community Engagement & Strategic Partnerships, says that the anticipated attendance, “Last year. we had over sixty community organizations represented and over 3,000 West Side residents attended. This year, we hope to have over seventy community organizations and 5,000 residents attending.” Johnson says that in making the Summer of Opportunity an annual event, BUILD had three goals. “One, we want to show residents of our community that there are resources here and people who care. Second, we want our city to see the positivity that is coming out of the West Side, and third, we want to change the national perception that Chicago and the West Side is the poster child for what is wrong with the country.” The over-arching goal is changing a negative stereotype about the West Side and balancing negative information with a good message about the community, and Johnson says that can be delivered with a

day focused on showing the community the wealth of resources it possesses, alongside a healthy dose of celebrating. To that end, Summer of Opportunity is a day full of fun for people of all ages. The parade route this year has moved to Madison Street, a change suggested by Police Commander Cato who wanted to highlight the good side of the thoroughfare. As the parade ends in Columbus Park, there will be a variety of activities, including a stage for performances and tables for the community organizations. A variety of food will be available, and there will be a tiny tot section, complete with climbing wall and trains for the children. Johnson emphasizes that the free event is meant to bring together the entire community. “It is for everybody: every single person in the community. We want to make a
day about fun and levity in our community.” More information about the Summer of Opportunity can be found on BUILD’s website:

Trini’s Tasty Pastries seeks to use the incubator’s commercial kitchen to grow By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
Trini’s Tasty Pastries, owned by West Garfield Park resident Trinisa Williams, is at least one West Side small business that stands to benefit once The Hatchery, a food business incubator, opens in the area. After catering for the past 20 years, Williams launched a bakery specializing in cookies, brownies, cakes and other items. Currently, she works out of her home and sells her pastries online and at special events, but once construction on The Hatchery is finished sometime late this year, Williams said that she’ll be able to take advantage of the facility’s shared commercial kitchen space. Williams’ story is a ray of optimism in what has been a rather pessimistic public reaction to The Hatchery. At numerous public meetings, many West Side residents have voiced their frustration with the new development, arguing that it’s being forced on them without their input.
Warming up to The Hatchery Williams said that she understands where The Hatchery’s critics are coming from, but argued that the development’s co-owners have gotten better with community outreach in recent months. She also urged all West Side residents to take advantage of what the facility has to offer. Williams said that she attended The Hatchery’s workshops and events for roughly a year and a half. Three months ago, she said, she decided to become a member. “So far, it’s been an excellent experience,” Williams said, adding that the biggest advantage of having a membership has been the networking opportunities. On April 25, The Hatchery owners teamed up with Ald. Walter Burnett (27th) to host the Hatchery Update and Community Fair to give residents a chance to get information and ask questions about the development. Williams was handing out cake slices and answering questions. During the presentation portion of the event, she argued that The Hatchery could be a great opportunity for the community. “I always said that if I was going to start a business, I wanted to do it in the community,” Williams said. “To have the opportunity to work with The Hatchery, in my own business, I couldn’t ask for more than that, because I will be in my own neighborhood.” In a follow-up interview earlier this

month, Williams said that she’s seen representatives with The Hatchery conducting outreach at an area farmers market, signing up residents for programs and services. And, more recently, they’ve done some free workshops at Garfield Park Conservatory. In the end, she said that she wants to do something good for the community. “I think Trini’s Tasty Pastries can actually fill that void in Garfield Park where people
can come in and order their birthday cakes and items and they would know they can get great product and service in their own neighborhood.” Williams said. “I always wanted to have my own business in my community, to work in my community, and I’m going to take full advantage of it,” she said.
