When a funeral becomes a revival
The aunt of Byron McKinney Jr., killed April 7 in a drive-by shooting, urged prayer for survivors By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Candice Redmond was fighting something as she struggled through her remarks during the April 15 funeral service for her first-born nephew, Byron McKinney Jr. McKinney, 24, was killed in an April 7 drive-by shooting that happened on the corner of Central Avenue and West Corcoran Place at around 1:30 p.m. Five other people, all bystanders, were injured. Redmond reminisced on the young man who was nicknamed BJ or Lil B-Y by those who knew him. According to his obituary, McKinney was the “first baby boy on Van Buren where everyone would pick him up and buy him things.” McKinney was born on September 30, 1992 to Charlene Redmond and Byron McKinney Sr. As a 2-year-old, the younger McKinney was infatuated with the Lion King. Each time he would watch the movie, he would corral all the adults in the house so that they could watch and sing songs along with him. “BJ was loved by many,” Candice said during the Saturday service, which was held at See FUNERAL on page 4

“Stop the violence. Stop the shooting,” the marchers chanted as they headed up Central Avenue toward the intersection of Corcoran Place on April 7. The march toward the high-traffic business district in Austin was in response to the grisly midday shooting at the intersection that killed 24-year-old Byron McKinney Jr. and wounded five others.
Several dozen people turned out to the rally and vigil on Wednesday, April 13, to send the message that violence will not be tolerated in their neighborhood. Anthony Clark, director and founder of Suburban Unity Alliance, said his organization and others are working to show that, “Austin is not in this fight alone; Oak Park is not in this fight alone.” “We’re taking over this corner,” he said. “We’re letting everybody know this is not your corner. Violence does not own this
block. We own this block.” Clark said the rally also aimed to send the message that neighbors are working to bring McKinney’s killers to justice but also those of Elijah Sims, an Oak Park River Forest High School student who was shot and killed in August. Sims’ mother, Sharita Galloway, also attended the rally saying that any time there is a shooting in the neighborhood it is a

M.C. Robinson, 79, reflects on the remnants of a lynching Last month, I spoke to M.C. Robinson, a suburban elected official who migrated to Chicago from the South several decades ago. While standing outside of a polling place, he spoke about the moment when as a child in the South he witnessed what turned out to have been the scene of a lynching. The truth of that moment, however, unfolded gradually. I came from Arkansas. I saw my first lynching or a place where a lynching was when I was 9 years old. My mother was taking me fishing with her and I was trying to figure out why anybody would build a fire around a telegram pole. I saw the sling up there, but you know, being 9 years old, you don’t know why a sling would be hanging down from a telegram pole. The fire had charred the pole. So I asked my mother. My mother said, ‘You don’t need to know that.’ I came to Chicago when I was about 27 years old. Back then, my thinking was, ‘I’m a boy from Down South, I got to be a little better than the average guy.’ So I look
in the newspaper and see how much these tool and die people made. I said, ‘Boy that’s a lot of money.’ At the time, I didn’t know the skill that went into that, so I went to trade school — American Institute of Engineering and Technology on Racine and Fullerton. I went there for two years. When I graduated, I went to work for FMC Link-Belt, where I took a four-year apprenticeship. When I went back Down South, I was thinking about [the lynching place]. I asked my mom. I said, ‘Mom, was that a lynching?’ She said, ‘Yeah.’ She said, ‘C’ (she called me ‘C’), you were having trouble sleeping as it is.’ She said, ‘If I had a told you that …’ See, I used to have these reoccurring nightmares. [I would dream] of guys like the Ku Klux Klan coming and taking my brother out and I’m screaming and hollering and they dragging him out. This was way before Emmett Till, you know.

FUNERAL
Byrun McKinney, 24 from page 1 Home of Life M.B. Church, 4650 W. Madison Street. “When BJ started going to school, my sister wanted nothing but the best. She sent him to [Les Finch] … My sister paid out of pocket for her child to get a decent education. As BJ got older, we continued to groom him, to teach him right from wrong.” Her sister, Candice said, had done a “great job, an awesome job” raising McKinney. At 16-years-old, Charlene held down two jobs to support her son, who was doted on by a whole block of adults, Candice among them. “I was the strong auntie,” Candice said. “I was the auntie that, when you disrespected me, I would show you tough love. Every Christmas, I was the good auntie because we tried to give our kids the best, the best we didn’t have. I would go all out of my way. I didn’t care how much I spent on those kids. As long as they made us happy, we made them happy.” Candice would later present her sister and McKinney’s father with plaques bearing aphorisms. A king and a queen “will always turn pain into power.” But all of that love and support, it seemed, was not enough to keep the city’s influence and its deadliness at bay. A cousin of McKinney told the Chicago Tribune that the young man may have been murdered over a conflict
that originated on Facebook. “[BJ] knew right from wrong but as he got older he had to take the world as a man,” Candice said. “He had to make his own decisions. We didn’t like the decisions that he made but my sister wasn’t giving up on her child. She refused to let the devil have him.” During her comments, Candice spoke directly to some of her nephews who BJ “leaves to cherish.” They are boys on the cusp of becoming men. They sat with family members at the front of the cavernous sanctuary, which was filled nearly to capacity with several hundred mourners. “We done been through two tragic losses,” she told the young men. “When we tell you right from wrong, listen to us. We know what we talking about … There’s too many of our babies dying. Dying. I get on Facebook and I see this person’s nephew dying, this person’s grandchild dying. It just hurts. It hurts. It hurts.” Candice then urged all of the clergy in attendance to pray for everyone at the funeral who was under 30 years old, especially her nephews. “I just needed to get this spirit off me,” she said. “Please, talk to my nephews.” The clergymen directed the young people to start walking toward the front of the church, near McKinney’s casket. “We ask y’all to excuse us for a moment,” said one pastor, before praying. “This is a dying world and it’s looking to take our young people with it. While we’re up in our comfortable homes and cars, laid up in our comfortable beds, these young people are out here fighting a battle that we know nothing about …

ALTAR CALL: West Side minister and activist George Bady hugs and prays for a West Side youth during the April 15 funeral services for 24-year-old Byron McKinney Jr., held in Austin. We gonna pray until the heavens come down.” And so a funeral turned into an impromptu revival that climaxed with an altar call. At least eight people ended up reciting the Sinner’s Prayer before a wave of applause and shouts descended on the mourners. “I feel a lot better,” Candice said after the
sinners, now saved, had taken their seats. It wasn’t clear whether or not any of her nephews were among those who walked to the altar seeking salvation. What was clearer was that she had shaken the spirit that had been haunting her — at least for the moment. CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

County pledges $4M for job training in Austin, South Side Residents say they want to know details on how the money will be spent By TERRY DEAN AustinTalks
Austin and two other Chicago neighborhoods struggling with unemployment and violence will receive $4 million for youth job-training programs from the Cook County government. The money targets at-risk, 16- to 24-yearolds. Cook County lawmakers announced an initial $1 million for Austin and Back of the Yards last October. An additional $3 million was recently committed to both neighborhoods and newly added South Shore, said Commissioner Richard Boykin, whose district includes Austin. The unemployment rate in predominantly African-American Austin is 21 percent, significantly higher than the citywide rate of 11 percent and the statewide rate of 5.4 percent. All three unemployment figures are among the highest in the nation, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Chicago’s violence is also staggeringly high, with 165 homicides (20 of them in Austin) reported so far this year, according to the Chicago Tribune. Last year, Chicago saw 786 homicides, including 88 in Austin, some of the highest numbers in recent memory. Speaking at a community meeting last week in Austin, Boykin said community groups will be able to apply for some of that job-training money. The county wants to train an initial 300 young people before expanding the program.
“Those communities will decide which organizations are going to do this training work to help people be prepared for job opportunities,” Boykin said to the audience of about 100. The commissioner said he plans to work with Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) and Ald. Emma Mitts (37th) on the program. Boykin didn’t say when the program will kick off, though news reports from last October said it’s expected to start this summer. Last Monday’s community meeting was hosted by state Rep. Camille Lilly (78th) and state Sen. Don Harmon (38th) to discuss pressing issues facing the community. How to fix and better fund Chicago’s schools were among the topics discussed, as well as the state’s fiscal crisis and budget stalemate. Stopping the rampant gun violence and improving police-community relations were also topics touched upon. Concerning the jobs program, Austin resident Yvonne Hammonds said the community needs more information on how the money will be spent. “We need to know that [money] is going to this organization for these specific things they’re going to do for our community,” said Hammonds, who’s lived in Austin for 30-plus years. Austin, she added, has seen some community organizations shuttered due to lack of money, another reason why transparency is needed on who’s getting what. With some organizations, Hammonds said, “They’re hiding and not doing whatever they got the money for, or they’re not letting people know what they’re doing. “It’s like, ‘I don’t want you to know I got some money because then you’re going to hold me accountable.’ But if I’m doing my job, it shouldn’t be a problem,” Hammonds said. Former Bear announces new safety technology in Austin
NFL Hall of Famer Richard Dent is behind new artificial intelligence program that enhances emergency reporting By TERRY DEAN AustinTalks
A Chicago Bear Hall of Famer and businessman visited the West Side earlier the month to announce the launch of a new technology meant to help protect children and elders. Richard Dent announced the new venture at the Westside Ministers Coalition’s monthly meeting at Columbus Park Refectory, 5701 W. Jackson St. Dent’s company, RLD Resources, an energy and technology management firm, is developing the technology. A sick elder can also use the service to contact family and a hospital if he or she is at home alone. Dent said the technology is being rolled out locally in Illinois before going national. The signal will go to an elder’s loved one. The service is expected to roll out this spring at several schools throughout the state, including Austin’s Plato Learning Academy. “It’s all about protecting people,” said Dent, who founded his Chicago-based firm in 1999. Dent said the company has been developing the safety program for about four years. “We want to protect our kids,” Dent said. “Gang warfare, hate crimes, cyber-bullying – it’s a cyber-warfare going on in the technology space. There’s no filter sitting in that space to protect the kids.”
The AI technology is also set up to use motion detection, allowing a child under threat to shake their phone to send a signal to their safety network. The GPS can track a child’s location and, for instance, activate if he or she takes a different route coming home from school. “If you’re a parent, someone needs to be aware of what is taking place, who’s receiving what and who’s doing what,” Dent said. Once it hits the market, the service could be offered at a very low price, Dent said. The former Chicago Bear said the technology will eventually be offered to college students and adults. Cyber-bullying is a problem affecting millions of U.S. children, according to federal government data. About 2 million school children reported being bullied via text, instant messaging or email during the 2010-2011 school year, according to a U.S Department of Education survey of school children ages 12-18. Some 24 percent of middle schoolers and 15 percent of high schoolers report being cyber-bullied, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Plato Principal Charles Williams said he hopes to introduce the program to his students before the school year is out. “When I heard the idea that students can be protected, I jumped all over it,” Williams said. Plato is a K-8 school located on two campuses – the middle at 116 N. LeClaire and the elementary school at 5545 W. Harrison. Williams said the program is like having another advocate in the building to protect the students. “Unfortunately, my daughter had an issue herself where somebody was trying to mess with her online,” Williams said. “So I always approach things not only as a principal but as a father. For a parent to have more advocates in the school if something happens is a wonderful opportunity.”

volves juveniles.” Another contributing factor to rising crime in Austin is young, single mothers raising boys, said Rev. Rosetta Dotson, a volunteer with the Good Neighbor Campaign in Austin. “Too many babies are having too many babies,” said Dotson. “I know a young mother, who is 22-years-old and raising five kids with no help from the father.” Dotson said along with young mothers, who often have weak parenting skills, a lack of jobs and drugs are other reasons why so much crime is taking place in Austin. “Parenting skills need to be taught to these young mothers between 18 and 24-years-old. But beyond that the community still needs jobs and more drug prevention programs,” said Dotson. “Otherwise, you can expect the same result year after year.” As volunteers marched down the block urging residents to get involved, one resident said she came outside after hearing the group praying. “I was in my kitchen when I heard someone on a bullhorn praying. It moved me so much that came outside to see what was going on,” said Sharon Hodges, 53. “I have been here in Austin for seven years and it has always been infested with crime.” Hodges said her grandchildren live with her but are afraid to go outside and play. “I lost a child to gun violence [in Austin] so I know the pain first hand. When I was growing up we could go to the park and play but now that’s not even safe,” added Hodges, whose 16-year-old daughter was shot in a 2000 drive-by and later died from her injuries in 2007. “Only God can fix this gun violence problem. But it’s nice to see the police and concerned residents doing what they can to keep things to a minimum.” CONTACT: wreporter@yahoo.com

The 15th District Austin Mobilization Team is designed to engage the community in crime-fighting
Chicago police officers from the 15th District recently organized a block canvass with local clergy and community leaders to bring awareness to continued gun violence in Austin. After initially meeting at the Helping Hand Church, 538 N. Lavergne Ave., the 15th District’s Austin Mobilization Team hit the street knocking on doors and speaking with residents about their concerns. The goal of the April 11 event, said police officer Tonya Collins, was to get residents more involved with police to help combat shootings in Austin. “This is our second block canvass and we’re going to be conducting block canvasses all summer and up until the fall,” said Collins, a CAPS (Chicago Alternative Police Strategy) member. “We hope to have our next canvass in May and plan to target locations that have a lot of shootings and other different public violence in the area.” She added that to achieve this goal police officers must build trust with residents. “If we’re going to work together we have to be able to trust one another and that is something CAPS is constantly working towards,” said Collins, who argued that one contributing factor to violence in Austin is curfew. In Chicago, the curfew law states that minors 16 years old and under must be accompanied by an adult in public after 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. “We have a lot of activities that contribute to violence and curfew is one of them. Minors should be in the presence of a parent and that’s not happening,” explained Collins. “Unfortunately, a lot of our crime takes place at night after curfew and it usually in-

How social media is contributing to the death toll
n Friday, April 7 around 1:30 in the afternoon, six people were shot just south of the Green Line at the corner of Central Avenue and Corcoran. Of those shot, only one young man died. His relative is quoted as saying, “Facebook killed him. That’s what did it. They boxing over Facebook. It’s so stupid.” Facebook, just like street gangs, is not a physical entity. But Facebook has become an emerging part of the criminal element cycle of this decade by inciting and being the instigator/purveyor of conflicts and drama. In the past, threats and boasting by one group or individual were limited to the size of the audience in the immediate vicinity. Social media has changed all that. Now millions can see what you post and they can be anywhere all over the world.
For those who are the recipients of the derogatory comments, they no longer have to learn about it via “word of mouth.” Social media has allowed it to be “in their face” and Facebook is the place to see and find it. Facebook has several platforms that have made it the perfect vessel by which one group can intimidate or aggravate the other. Most people know about basic posting of messages. Those remarks can be vile comments that are seen as written threats of intimidation. It is also amazing and concerning how strangers can join in commenting, some using language that is offensive. Where in person, a stranger would never jump into an argument, Facebook has made many who would otherwise be “shy and reserved” to become “bold and vocal.” Then there is Facebook Live, which streams a live action feed to an audience of
ARLENE JONES
friends and watchers. From the suicide of a young girl to killers proudly broadcasting their dastardly deeds, Facebook Live is going in a direction many never envisioned. Lastly, there is Facebook Messenger, which is proving to be the most provocative of them all. Messenger allows people to contact one another privately. That contact can be via a private text message or in the form of an actual phone call. The ability of a “Facebook friend” to call is the most vexing of all. I recently experienced it when one of my male “Facebook friends” called my cellphone at 8:30 at night. I saw his name and my immediate gut reaction was to wonder why he was calling. He and I don’t know each other well enough to have a verbal conversation. Thankfully, my curiosity wasn’t activated, so I didn’t pick up. My gut feeling told me it would be better if he left a message so I could judge if I wanted to speak with him. The man didn’t leave a message. I chalked his call up to an inadvertent action. But his actions didn’t end there. Five hours later around 1:46 in the morn-
ing, he again called my cellphone. As I watched the phone ring and ring, I had visions of just how irresponsible and dangerous that phone call could be. What if someone were living with or dating a person who would follow a phone call coming in at that time of night with extreme negative behavior? The words “That kind of call is gonna get somebody killed” went through my head as I imagined all the scenarios that could happen. Not only on the part of the person getting a call that time of night, but what if my “Facebook Friend” is dating a nutcase who sees my name and phone being called at that time of the morning? She might want to take revenge on me instead of him. I had so many “what if ” scenarios go through my mind that I removed the Facebook Messenger App from my phone. Social media was invented and designed with only positive intentions in mind. However, it is the negative uses that are leading/ contributing to even worse negative actions. How do we address it before it gets even worse?
