Welcome to Austin
n 2015, Austin Coming Together released its Thrive 2025 agenda. The Thrive 2025 agenda lays out 4 bold and ambitious impact goals for our member organizations to achieve between 2016 and 2025— ■ To ensure that 3,900 Austin children have access to high quality early learning programs; ■ To create opportunities for 2,775 Austin residents to acquire living wage work; ■ To facilitate 1,775 restorative community conversations to occur that result in consensus resolutions; ■ To stabilize ownership of 400 residential properties. This Spring, Austin Coming Together attempted to measure the collective impact of our member organizations in 2016. We have compiled our preliminary results to share with the community in this issue. Although ACT is still collecting responses to our survey, we wanted to share the results we have collected thus far. The results presented in this issue are based on the preliminary responses from some of our core members—Westside Health Authority, Jane Addams Resource Corporation, BUILD, Inc., Cara, Manufacturing Renaissance, By the Hand Club for Kids, Austin Childcare Providers’ Network, Channing’s Childcare Academy, VOCEL, Bethel New Life, Oak Park Regional Housing Center, Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry, and St. Joseph Services. These preliminary results demonstrate that the road to creating a thriving Austin Community by the year 2025 will be a long and challenging road. Not only will ACT members need to coordinate their services, they will need to help mobilize ALL leaders in the community to create plans that attract public and private investments, and build the collective power necessary to dismantle the structural barriers to our community’s success and well being.

n June 23rd in Columbus Park a number of community organizations will host a community celebration of Summer of Opportunity. BUILD, in connection with the Institute for Non-Violence and a number of community groups and corporate sponsors are planning a day to bring the community together and get children on the west side involved in jobs and summer activities. Summer of Opportunity is a chance to be pro-active and bring a positive celebration to the youth of Chicago. Adam Alonso, Executive Director of BUILD, notes that the day will begin with a parade that will travel down Jackson from Cicero into Columbus Park. “We’ll have inflatables, climbing walls and trackless trains. After School Matters will host a performance. Dion Thomas will be reffing three-on-three basketball. In the afternoon, the park district will host a dance event, and in the evening will kick off its movies in the park series, so families can make a whole day of it.” BUILD, which has operated since 1969 as a youth service organization, began as a gang intervention program. Throughout the ensuing decades, BUILD has grown its mission to work in some of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods to stem the violence that takes away the positive potential, and all too frequently, the very lives, of the youth of the community. From its start in one commu-
nity, working with fewer than 200 gang-affiliated youth, today, BUILD serves nearly 3,000 youth in Austin, East Garfield Park, Humboldt Park and Logan Square. BUILD focuses on three basic goals: intervention, working closely with the juvenile court system and schools: prevention, with a teen center site in Austin, and education, serving first generation, low-income students of color in college. Through all of these services, BUILD also emphasizes mental and physical health and wellness. For Alonso, the June 23 Summer of Opportunity Kick Off celebration is a compilation of many parts of the community working together with a common goal of helping the youth of the community. “What’s nice about this event, is that it’s not just local non-profits, it’s also the local police departments and corporate sponsors and organizations such as the Red Cross who are all dedicated to making this work. It’s a prime example of when you bring people to the table together, great things can happen.” Danny Perez, Manager of Communications and External Relations for Build, says that focusing on a positive experience is an important part of changing not only perception but also reality in the neighborhood. “So often, the media focuses on the violence in our community. It’s really exciting to do something beneficial for the kids. Rather than chasing bullets, let’s get together and do something positive.”
