Owner, Nadeau’s Ice Sculptures

In 1980, Jim Nadeau set out to introduce the art of ice sculpting to Chicagoland. In 1989, he purchased the former Del Crest Juice Company building on Roosevelt Road and has been operating out of Forest Park ever since.

Nadeau’s Ice Sculptures is now the largest full-time ice sculpting operation in the Midwest, and Nadeau says his Forest Park location is the perfect place to connect with clients throughout the Chicago area.

When did you start Nadeau’s Ice Sculptures?

I started NADEAU’S in 1980. At the time there was no other Ice Carving company in the U.S. As a line cook for Marriott/Boston in 1975, I learned the art by watching my chef carve on the loading dock.

At the time the only hand tools he used were chippers, chisels etc. I then got transferred to open several Marriott hotels including Marina Del Rey in Los Forestparkreview.com

Angeles, and then we re-opened the Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel, which Marriot acquired in 1977. In May of 1978 I was sent to open the Michigan Avenue Marriott here in Chicago. By 1980, I decided to go off on my own, and I opened this unusual company.

Of course, it was very hard to open a business of any kind, but in an industry that never existed, I had lots of problems. From educating the market place to dealing the IRS. In the beginning I painted houses and bar-tended at the Mayfair Regency hotel to pay the bills.

What kind of training did you do to become an ice artist?

I had no formal training at all. The chef I worked for was carving weekly brunch “Swans.” One day I asked him if I could learn, his reply was, “yea kid, come in on your own time.” So, without a word spoken he let me watch him for weeks. Finally, he gave me the tools and a block of ice. An ice artist was born.

What kinds of events do you make sculptures for?

Everything you can imagine. For

example, just this summer, we created a sculpture for the TV series Empire that you will see during the fifth season opener. I was carving at Guaranteed Rate Field for the White Sox during Family day Christmas in July. It was 95 degrees and sunny; spectators loved it.

Our core business is events of all kinds, weddings, birthdays, corporate functions, and festivals.

What is your favorite part of the job?

My staff, Today, I have the best group of talent and personalities I ever had. Also, after doing this for over 38 years, I still get excited seeing customers and love the interaction with the event guests or spectators. Because of its impermanence I call it “art for the moment” I truly have a great career.

Way too many to mention. What I am excited about is we are about to launch an event space here at the ice house for team-building exercises, like ice breaker events in which you come in and carve ice.

Takara Beatheagudell Owner Takara Signature Designs For forty years, Takara Beatheagudell has been using her creativity to make women feel beautiful. What began as a small accessory line turned into a clothing line which led her to open her own boutique, first in Oak Park and recently relocated to Forest Park. Takara Signature Designs provides a personalized shopping experience based on Takara’s keen understanding of women’s bodies and the best clothing style for individual body types.

How did you decided to turn your interest and skills in fashion into a brick and mortar store?

Yes, like most artists, I started in my home and ultimately rented a studio to produce products. While many of my clients would visit my studio, I found that I could offer more beautiful accoutrements to pair back with your garments in a store. Besides, I love taking an empty space and making it beautiful!

My clients love popping in the store to see what new collections have arrived.

Tell us what kind of store Takara is.

Takara Signature Designs, aka TAKARA, is a boutique that offers seasonal collections designed and manufactured by owner Takara Beatheagudell.

I opened the Takara boutique on June 15, 2018. I’m looking forward to planning and having a Grand Opening in this fall as we prepare for the autumn months. Our fall transitional collections will point you in the direction of upcoming trends and classics.

As a business owner, I find it important to align your business within a business district. Many of my Oak Park customers are shoppers within the Forest Park district, and I’ve discovered a lot of my customers also reside in Forest Park!

It’s been a thrill getting to know some of the business owners. Many have stopped by to say welcome to Madison Street.

Who are your customers? What kind of unique shopping experience are you able to provide for them?

My customers are women who aren’t afraid of architectural shapes and unusual designs. Women that are confident and like to be outside the box of classic designers. Takara also provides “Special Orders” for current collections that are featured within the boutique.

I’ve been surprised to see millennials shopping with us, generally gravitating to the Miya Collection, which tends to be trendier and price conscious.

We own Team Blonde Boutique, Eco Spa & Salon, founded in 2001 and Counter Coffeebar & Lounge, founded in 2013.

What made you choose Forest Park as a place to open your businesses?

Forest Park had experienced a regentrification in the early 2000’s, and Madison Street was a cool, new, urban place to do business, and we wanted to be part of that new energy. We began participating in the French Market in Forest Park to see how the town responded to our handmade jewelry because that was our primary focus back then. It went well, so we set up shop here. In fact, we eventually, purchased two buildings to hold our businesses!

Who comes in the doors of your businesses?

All sorts of people frequent our businesses from twenty year-olds to ninety year-olds. Everyone can find something they can enjoy at Counter Coffee. We have coffee produced by a company who pays their growers far above fair trade wages, amazing Chai, milk from a small farm, gluten-free treats, non-dairy milk options, and even vegan choices.

Plus, we’ve added breakfast sandwiches with humanely-sourced ingredients.

Every age person visits us at Team Blonde for spa and salon services - people seem to appreciate that we try to focus on offering exemplary services with organic and natural products where we can. We also like to feature socially-conscious items and eco-friendly products in our boutique. We try to purchase from artists or producers that are trying to make a better path for themselves or someone else. Also, we feature clothing lines that are made in the U.S. whenever possible.

Why do you love Forest Park?

We love Forest Park because it’s close to the city and retains that urban vibe, but it’s easy to get to and has plenty of parking and a great downtown. It’s been a wonderful home to our two businesses for all these years!

The day of the race, Hankus surveyed the course and found a huge section was underwater, thanks to heavy rainfall from the week before. Hankus ran back to The Grove, set up an internet connection and remapped the course. She said the village helped by quickly clearing that part of the course.

Finally things started to fall in line. Volunteers from the police department arrived to help with logistics, checking race identification and shutting down traffic for a portion of the street. Firefighters — nearly all of them donating their time — manned the track.

Through donations and race sign-ups, Hankus estimated the annual run raised about $4,000, which the fire department plans to donate to the American Cancer Society; the 100 Chicago Club, which provides support to families of first responders who have fallen in the line of duty; as well as local charities like the food pantry at the Howard Mohr Community Center, the All-School Picnic, the mayor’s annual toy drive and more. Along with running, attendees munched on tacos, sipped beer and listened to music by Midnight, a regular band at Groovin’ on the Grove.

Once the race started, everything seemed to run smoothly, Hankus said, but the week before, everything that could go wrong, did. The company that was supposed to deliver branded cups and koozies delivered them to a house in California, rather than the Forest Park Fire Department. The

Owner Mohr Oil Mike Mohr is a third-generation Forest Park business owner, whose family has been a part of the Forest Park landscape for over sixty-five years. The familyowned oil distribution company provides oil to trucking, construction and transportation companies, as well as emergency diesel generators, car dealers, fleet services, large boats and marinas, airport ground equipment and commercial and residential heating oil. Tell me about what kind of business Mohr Oil is.

How long have you been in business? Is this a family business?

Our business was started 68 years ago by my late Father, Howard Mohr, and my Grandfather, Roy Mohr. My father passed away in 1977, and I became part owner at that time and just recently I bought out my longtime partner and I am sole owner at this time. I recently got certified by the State of Illinois as a Veteran Owned Small Business Administration (VOSBA). This will open up a lot of doors as far as new business goes.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I am truly lucky as far as I love the business and have worked here for 47 years now. I have many great relationships with my customers and try to make a point of getting out to meet each and every one of them. I find it a great challenge to keep the company running smoothly and most of all love all of my employees and treat them as family.

Karen Dylewski Director Forest Park Howard Mohr Community Center Karen Dylewski has been the Director of Forest Park’s Howard Mohr Community Center for a decade, and in that role, she supervises a number of programs that touch all aspects of community life in the village. Named after the late senator and former Forest Park Mayor, and operated by the Village of Forest Park, the Community Center is at the heart of the community in many ways. From youth programs such as parent and tot programming, toddler time and daycare to senior services such as the Forest Park Senior Citizen Club, Senior Transportation to grocery stores and shopping and Meals on Wheels, the Community Center offers services for all ages. In addition to social service programming, the Community Center also brings a lot of fun to Forest Park, planning events such as the Easter Eggstravaganza, a family Christmas party with Santa, a youth Valentine party, a senior New Year’s Eve party and Groov’n in the Grove.

What role does the Howard Mohr Community Center play in the community of Forest Park?

The Community Center is home to a lot of residents, support groups, youth groups and social groups. The Community Center is home of the Senior Citizens Club which meets every Tuesday.

Several support groups, including The Disabled Veterans, The MS Group, and The Answer Inc “Autism Support Group,” and Weekly Hines VA meetings are held to help our Veterans find the jobs and resources they need. There is also Free Tax preparation, State of Illinois Driving review classes and more.

Who uses the Community Center?

The Center offers before and after school care along with full time summer camp for the youth in our community.

We also coordinate several special events with children and seniors every year. For adults in Forest Park, the Community Center hosts several community events such as the Cindy Lyons Health Fair, Tax Appeals, Financial and Fraud seminars. We are home of the Forest Park Food Pantry and much more.

How long have you been the director of Community Center? In your role as the director, what have you learned about your community?

I have been the Director of the Community Center since 2008. Since working at the Community Center I have worked with and met some amazing people. Working here I am able to help people maneuver through some of the systems like Food Stamps, Social Security, and Senior Services. I’m able to work with residents who need help with a loved one at home. If we are asked to help with something, we will do the best we can. If we cannot help, we will find someone or someplace who can.

What are some of your favorite parts of the job and why?

The thing I love about my job is the great staff that I work with every day. We are like family. I also love all the different facets of the job. We wear many hats.

We have a lot of people pass through our doors every day all for different reasons. I feel very fortunate and humble to be able to do the work we do.

Children’s Clubhouse Clubhouse is a before and after school daycare program for children who attend Forest Park public schools, grades K-6. Offered weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the school year. Call for fee information.

Food Pantry The Community Education Food Pantry is available to residents in need of emergency food due to temporary unemployment or other financial need. Donations of canned or boxed, non-perishable food items are accepted year-

round. Each Thanksgiving, food baskets are delivered to Forest Park families who are in need. Food and gift baskets are also distributed at Christmas.

Pace Bus Passes Pace bus passes are available to adults at the rate of 10 for $9.50. In addition, reduced fare rates for the passes are available to seniors and students.

Rules of the Road Review Class Offered periodically, the purpose of the course is to help citizens

pass the Illinois drivers license renewal examination. Call for dates and times.

Senior Activities and Trips The center offers a number of activities and services for seniors including Wed. trips to a variety of venues (theater, sports, games of chance, special exhibits.) Informational and personal safety seminars are also scheduled throughout the year.

Holy coleus, Forest Park The Historical Society of Forest Park crowned the winner of its inaugural House and Garden Walk on July 19, naming John Sahli and Rick Wagner’s home on the 100 block of Elgin as “Best in Show” among the seven houses featured.

The nearly 110 attendees who walked the homes chose Sahli and Wagner’s house as tops. Wagner said he believes the pair’s collection of more than 500 colored coleus plants pushed their garden over the edge.

Coleus plants can include small leaves with ruffled ends or large leaves with bold margins, and feature colors that span the rainbow, green to violet to red.

“I’ve been hooked on them all my life, my grandpa had them in his garden,” Wagner said, adding: “I feel elated.”

Sahli said he had never thought about planting coleus’ before he met Wagner, but now he’s stopped counting how many are in his backyard. He said he’s proud of his garden --”planting the coleus’ has been a labor of love,” he said -- and that this Forestparkreview.com

will be the first award the duo’s space has ever received. Jessica Combe Luciano, founder of Creativita, presented the two with a handcrafted cement plaque acknowledging their first-place finish, and local entrepreneur Marty Sorice donated food and drinks to the celebration.

“Other than family and a few friends no one’s ever been to our house,” Wagner said. “It’s been great to be able to share it with the community.”

Houses featured were located across the north and south sides of town, and included bird feeders, in-home elevators, monarch butterfly nests and much more.

“You all know everyone has an amazing house,” said Chris Everett, vice president of the Historical Society, who spearheaded the event.

She said this year’s walk raised nearly $3,000 for the group, which they plan to invest in raising awareness about the Historical Society and organizing

other events, like the Rat Pack of Roosevelt Road pub crawl coming up on September 14. Everett aims to make the House and Garden Walk an annual event, and said she’s already gotten enough submissions to fill up next year’s stroll. She said there will be at least a three-year break between houses featured from year to year.

“If you haven’t been to all these houses, I promise you need to see them,” she said to the about 30 attendees of the awards ceremony.

“Come over anytime,” Wagner invited the crowd.

Senior Bingo and Lunch Ten games of bingo and lunch are offered to senior citizens for a small fee monthly, the 4th Thurs. of the month. Call the center for dates, reservations, and to arrange transportation.

Senior Citizens Club Meets Tues. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Community Center. Offers social activities for seniors including arts and crafts, card and board games, visiting with old friends and making new ones. Business meetings are held the first Tues. of the month, Sept.-June. The club welcomes members from surrounding communities. Transportation is available to Forest Park residents by appointment.

Senior Income Tax Preparation The American Association of Retired Persons will be at the center on Monday & Tuesday mornings to assist senior citizens with income tax preparation Feb.-April. This free service is by appointment only. Transportation is available by appointment.

Senior Movie A first-run movie is presented at the center once a month, usually the second Thurs. Popcorn is provided. There is no charge. Call for date and time.

Also changes information such as new address. Issues license plate renewal stickers (must have renewal form.) Road testing is not available.

Current fees apply. The program is open to anyone younger than 75.

Those older than 75 must go to a secretary of state facility.

Summer Clubhouse The Community Center offers nine weeks of summer daycare for children entering grades K-6. Creative projects, free play, weekly field trips (additional cost), swimming, structured games, indoor and outdoor sports. This program provides summer adventures that promote a healthy mind, body and spirit. Call for dates and fee information.

What does the Diversity Commission of the village of Forest Park do? When was it established?

The commission was established in July 2016 at the behest of the Mayor, Anthony Calderone. At a village meeting two years prior, the Mayor had attempted to pass a resolution requiring all young adults to not wear low riding pants. It was called the “saggy pants” resolution and didn’t pass. In discussing it, the Mayor promised to start a Diversity Commission and solicited volunteers. I signed up and was made Chair, and six other members joined on.

What we do is evolving. Our main mission is to serve as a space for community members to voice issues, concerns, and problems around areas of diversity and inclusion. We conducted an informal survey of community members and found that most wanted events to openly discuss issues of concern. One such concern was about undocumented immigrants feeling welcome in our village. With the help of community members and a lawyer, the commission drafted a welcoming resolution and got it passed by the village commissioners and mayor.

In our second year, we had several members leave when their terms ended, and new members joined. We are now looking to create quarterly events to highlight various aspects of diversity in Forest Park, bring people together and create these connections. We will have a Diversity Taste of Forest Park this October and are looking to put together a Pride Parade this coming June.

The two roles inform each other. I was the chair for the commission before I became the Director of SDMA at Rush University. Being the chair helped me deepen my leadership skills and, more importantly, meet people where they are at in their diversity and inclusion journey.

There are so many layers to what diversity and inclusion is and so many ways people can see this work that the more I can help individuals feel included and that they have a voice around the table, the more we can work collaboratively on a solution. At Rush University, I apply the

I was born and raised in New York City on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and then lived on the North Side of Chicago for around twenty years. I am city born and bred and never thought I’d like to live in a “suburb.” However, moving out here nearly five years ago, Forest Park truly lives up to its motto of Big City Access with Small City Charm. I feel right at home--knowing all my neighbors, connecting with random people walking their dogs as I walk ours, and enjoy all the access to community events and celebrations. When you see me out an about I am almost always smiling all the time.

West Suburban Special Recreation Association The Park District of Forest Park, through West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA), offers more than 60 programs for local residents with disabilities. All ages and all ability levels are served in these therapeutic recreational activities. Many programs are similar to traditional park district classes, such as the association’s swim lessons, fitness classes and day camp.

At these programs, a recreation specialist will adjust how skills are taught, how much personal assistance will be given and if any equipment accommodation is needed. Behavior management plans and other tools are used. Some programs require one-on-one staffing for a participant to be successful. Others are designed so that the competition is at a fair level, as in Special Olympics. Director Forest Park Library

Pilar Shaker joined the Forest Park Library as the Director in June 2016 after working for seven years at the Hinsdale Public Library and serving as the Director of the New Lenox Library. Shaker completed her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences in 2008. She grew up in Oak Park, her husband was raised in River Forest, and the couple lived in Forest Park while she was completing her Master’s degree. For Shaker, this part of Chicagoland is home.

What sparked your interest in a career with a library?

After finishing my undergraduate degree, I didn’t have a strong sense of what I wanted to do. I was given the good advice of considering the career choices of people that I have a great deal of respect for. A wonderful life-long mentor of mine was a librarian and proForestparkreview.com

What makes the Forest Park library special?

Every public library is made special by the community that it serves. FPPL is a library that puts a great deal of effort in to making sure that the services and materials we offer are relevant to the people who live here. The staff work hard to make sure that we really know who Forest Parkers are and what they value, I think the work we do here proves that we value serving them. I’m very proud of our library.

What kind of people love the Forest Park Library?

This is a great question! So many different people find value in our services and spaces. We spread the message that Everyone Is Welcome at our library, and if you visit our facility you’ll see that people take that to heart. We serve young children and have a wonderfully active and regular group of tween-agers that visit every day after school. Our

Teen Services Librarian has strong relationships with local high school students who come to decompress and hang out after a long work day. We have a busy Adult Services Department that is always active with adults using the computers and printers. We do outreach to seniors, homebound patrons, and members of our local business community. The point is … there isn’t just one type of person who loves FPPL!

What’s new at the Forest Park library?

There are always so many great things happening at the library. So many people connect the library with checking out books or using a computer, but we have so much more going on. Every month we offer dozens of programs and services for all ages. Coming up is a Minecraft after party for tweens, a knitting project to support our Little Free Pantry outside of the library, a baby toy and clothes swap, a yogurt making workshop, and so much more. Three years later as the Executive Director of the HSFP, I used that research to create an Eastland Disaster Bus Tour which ran this past July. We plan to run this tour every July to mark the anniversary of the Eastland Ship Disaster. With the high number of burials from the Eastland Disaster this tour is so uniquely Forest Park.

Alexis Ellers Executive Director Forest Park Historical Society

Alexis Ellers, Executive Director of the Historical Society of Forest Park, had long had an interest in local history when she began volunteering with the Historical Society in 2015. She turned that passion into a full-time job in 2016 and was named the Executive Director in December 2016.

She has continued to work to foster a sense of history in the village, and this summer helped launch the village’s first annual house and garden walk.

What sparked your interest in local history?

I’ve worked in Forest Park for the past

ten years at The Rogovin Collection, which manages the photography of Milton Rogovin. In 2010, Mark Rogovin was working on the second edition of The Day Will Come, a booklet with biographies of all the people buried at the Haymarket Martyrs Monuments and Radical Row. I helped him to photograph graves and gather biographies. After that project was completed, we created the website Forest Home Cemetery Overview which has information about the cemetery beyond Haymarket. With our knowledge and interest in Forest Home Cemetery, we volunteered to help the Historical Society of Forest Park with their research of graves of Eastland Disaster Victims. Forest Home Cemetery definitely has sparked my interest and kept it burning.

How do you use that curiosity in your duties as Executive Director of the Forest Park Historical Society?

Everything started with the land that is now the Forest Home Cemetery. It was originally Potawatomi burial land before it was sold to the German immigrant Ferdinand Haase who first had a picnic ground there. He later sold a section of the land to the Masons to create Waldheim, and the Masons wanted to have grave markers with their symbolism. It is such a unique cemetery that allowed people to express themselves while many other cemeteries put strict rules on what gravestones could look like.The cemetery is a reflection of Forest Park itself, celebrating its residents individuality.

Just from that one cemetery, we’ve had the before mentioned Eastland Disaster Tour, Monthly Haymarket and Radical Row Tours, a big May Day event, an exhibition on the cemetery as well as an annual cemetery scavenger hunt.

Much like the town itself, the Forest Home Cemetery has been the starting point for many of our programs and projects.

How do you see the Historical Society’s role in the community?

Our focus at the Historical Society is bringing history to the community. For the past two years, we’ve moved from having our own separate museum space towards having our exhibits in spaces people already go to, such as Village Hall and the library. We are continuing to develop more and more programming to reach as broad audience as we can. This year alone we’ve planned bus tours, a huge garden walk, bicycle tours, a scavenger hunt, pub crawl, a large May Day celebration, and Veteran’s Day Dinner.

We are also working to collect the stories of the community.

The first chapter of our oral history project, Our Neighbors, Our Heroes will focus on Veterans from Forest Park. The Historical Society wants to collect and share the history of all the different people in Forest Park. We’re excited to share this project for the first time this Veteran’s Day November 11th at the American Legions with a free meal for Veterans.

During your tenure as Executive Director, have there been any local stories or historical facts that you have learned about Forest Park that have surprised you?

The Forest Park Amusement Park was a big surprise. Our intern Shannan Evanson and I did an extensive exhibit about the theme park for our display cases in the Lower Level of Village Hall.

Despite Concordia’s objections, just a hundred years ago where the Eisenhower is now there was an amusement park. After the 1893 World’s Fair, amusement parks were very popular. We are lucky to have many postcards and photographs of the Forest Park Amusement Park in our collection. Many of the postcards feature the “Giant Safety Coast” and the “Steeple Chase,” roller coasters that would scare even the biggest modern amusement park fan. Unfortunately, prohibition and gambling raids, as well as multiple fires, brought the Forest Park Amusement Park to an end in 1922. The original carousel is the only remaining ride and is currently being restored in Ohio.

Our logo, which uses an architectural element from the entrance building to the amusement park, is keeping the memory alive. A portion of the exhibit is on display at the Forest Park Public Library as well as on our website.
