SHARON SEVER of Galia Lahav Arguably the most in-demand bridal label of the moment, Galia Lahav is revolutionizing the bridal fashion industry one trendsetting dress at a time. WedLuxe spoke exclusively with Sharon Sever, the head designer behind the brand, about how he got his start in the industry, the new Los Angeles-based flagship salon, and about what we can expect from their next runway presentation.

You are the head designer behind one of the most sought after bridal labels of the moment. How would you describe the Galia Lahav aesthetic? Why do you think your designs have struck such a chord with brides-to-be?

Things that are innovative and out of the ordinary do not go unnoticed. So is the case with our wedding dresses. Galia Lahav has bought a new approach to bridal wear, since I see it as fashion for brides, rather than just a wedding dress.

How did you get your start as a fashion designer?

After I finished my studies and internship in Haute Couture at the Paris American Academy, I joined Galia Lahav and have worked for her from day one. She has been my teacher and mentor since childhood and it was only natural that I would grow as a designer next to her.

Let’s talk about your evening wear collection. As a brand that is known primarily for wedding gowns, what inspired you in designing your evening wear line?

When Galia Lahav started her company over thirty years ago, she actually began by specializing primarily in evening wear. Since we were discovered abroad a few years ago, it may seem new to the North American market, but in fact for us [the evening wear line] has been getting back to the basics.

Who is the Galia Lahav woman? What sets her apart?

Women who are drawn to our style have a sense of fashion. The Galia Lahav bride loves to be trendy and up to date.

Who is the GALA by Galia Lahav customer? Is there a difference?

The GALA line is our first Ready-to-Wear line, and it is made to be more accessible. GALA allows for brides who are unwilling (or unable) to invest in the cost of the Haute Couture collection to have the same fashion approach with a lighter hand-made line.

Tell us about the new Galia Lahav flagship store in Los Angeles. Why did you decide on Los Angeles as a flagship destination?

Our store in L.A. will definitely carry way more of our evening wear collections. We chose L.A. because we received so many requests from celebrities in that area. We placed this store in a trendy area for a reason - we’re a young fashion house and felt connected to that trendy and up-and-coming part of L.A. Do you have a favourite gown in particular?

I have many. You can’t ask a father to choose between his children…

What did you have in mind when you were designing your latest bridal collection?

My beautiful brides-to-be.

Do you have any tips for a woman on her wedding day?

Be yourself, use your own judgment and be HOT. If you could design a gown for any woman throughout history, who would it be?

Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. For sure!

Tell us about trends in your line of work: What trends have been big this year? What do you see coming in the future?

This year the greatest trends were without a doubt the dramatic capes and detachable over-skirts. We were the first to do that with our Crystal gown. The trends of the near future will be bold colours, extraordinary veils and a lot of play with fabric textures.

What object could you never part with?

Lace!

Who is your hero?

My husband. He’s my driving force and anchor.

Can you give us a hint about what we can expect from your next bridal collection, showing at Bridal Market this coming April?

Let’s just say you better have tickets to the front row. It will be surprising.
