To think that we’re privileged enough to have created another Geelong Wedding Guide Magazine, truly blows my mind. It has been quite the year of weddings; from elopements, to huge festival-style weddings, and oh-so-many covid postponements that have finally had their day. We are so lucky to be able to share so many beautiful celebrations with you in this year’s guide. Not only have we been lucky enough to share some incredible celebrations in the mag, we’ve also enlisted our pretty-damn incredible wedding community here in Geelong to provide you with their knowledge on how to plan and execute your big (or little!) day. As this year’s edition evolved it became really clear just how much the wedding industry has embraced inclusivity, something very close to my heart as we hit the 5 year anniversary of Australia legalising same-sex marriage. I have no doubt that just like me, you can remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when the vote count was announced; and all the emotions that came along with the beautiful moment when equality (finally) triumphed that day. BEING AN LGBTQ+ wedding vendor FRIENDLY WEDDING VENDOR WRITTEN BY HANK PAUL

It’s been 5 years since the Marriage Equality act was legalised in Australia, so it’s important for the wedding industry to catch up and understand what it takes to be LGBTQ+ friendly and LGBTQ+ inclusive. By understanding these two terms, and what makes them different, you can start making changes to show your support for the Queer community. “When it comes to affirming LGBTQ+ love, wedding professionals are on the front line.” - Hank Paul What does LGBTQ+ LGBTQ+ friendly mean? Being an LGBTQ+ friendly business is a self-identifying label. Most business owners choose this label because they are personally supportive of the Queer community; they agree that love is love, and might even consider themselves an ally. It requires very little effort to be LGBTQ+ friendly. In fact, I’d say the only requirement to being an LGBTQ+ friendly wedding vendor is that you happily and willingly accept LGBTQ+ couples to book your services. You won’t turn anyone away, and there are no conditions to how you will work with them (e.g. don’t tag us in your Instagram photos) Friendly or inclusive? In contrast to the passive support that is required to self-identify as LGBTQ+ friendly, being LGBTQ+ inclusive is the proactive, externalisation of your support for Queer people. In short, being LGBTQ+ inclusive is about what you do, not just what you think. In order to be an LGBTQ+ inclusive wedding vendor, you need to go above and beyond being just ‘friendly’. It’s about understanding what it takes to

create a safe and welcoming business for Queer couples where they know they can be their authentic selves without judgement or discrimination. This requires having a deep and nuanced understanding of Queer identities, as well as a comprehensive inclusion strategy in your business. Why should wedding vendors be LGBTQ+ LGBTQ + inclusive, not just friendly? Some wedding professionals take an egalitarian approach to how they treat their clients. They aspire to treat everyone the exact same way because they believe it is the fair and right thing to do. However for too long, the wedding industry (and society at large) has been geared towards straight, cisgender (a person whose gender identity corresponds with the sex they were assigned at birth) couples. This is what we call ‘heteronormativity’. This means that queer couples are often left out, unseen, and underrepresented. As a historically marginalised group, LGBTQ+ people experience overwhelming rates of discrimination, exclusion and mental health challenges. So it’s really important for allies to understand the positive role they can play in re-writing the narrative. When it comes to affirming LGBTQ+ love, wedding professionals are on the front line. Want to be more inclusive? Start here. If you are ready to start making some changes in order to ‘inclusify’ your wedding business, here are some tips: • Accept that you will make mistakes. It’s very normal to accidentally say the wrong thing, or mess up from time to time. But fear of making any mistakes 10

is the main reason people don’t take any action in the first place. • Start with an inclusion statement. Solidify exactly what you want to communicate to the world, and then communicate it. Include the statement in your website footer, tell your clients when they enquire, and make it explicitly clear that you welcome LGBTQ+ couples. • Making LGBTQ+ couples feel welcome is a team effort. From wait staff to social media managers, every team member and contractor has a role to play in creating an inclusive culture. • Examine your website and marketing materials for exclusive language and adjust accordingly. For example, swapping “bride and groom” for “couple” wherever possible. • Be open to feedback from LGBTQ+ couples about their experiences with your business and what you can do to improve going forward. Quick note: LGBTQ+ people don’t owe you their feedback. It’s not the responsibility of your Queer clients to educate you or

fix your business. But if they choose to offer some feedback, be ready to listen and act. • Keep learning! Allyship is a journey, not a destination. As culture shifts, and societal understanding increases, there is always more to learn and be aware of when it comes to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion. Staying engaged with LGBTQ+ advocates online will help you stay up to date. Making your wedding business more inclusive doesn’t just benefit your customers, it benefits you as well. By

taking steps to become more LGBTQ+ friendly, you can show that your business is committed to progress and inclusivity. Sarah and Jenna fell in love while sharing a vodka raspberry in a bar followed by a kebab on Chapel street in Melbourne. The old-fashioned way right? Sarah (an AFLW player for North Melbourne) and Jenna (an Irish girl obsessed with hockey) had their first date during football’s Pride Round in 2018, despite Jenna having no idea what was going on during the game. Spending the next few years building a life together alongside their two labradors Charlie and Oatie, the couple travelled all over the world before buying their first home in 2020. With the pandemic now in the rear-view mirror, Sarah and Jenna cannot wait to get back out into the world, creating more amazing memories together.

The perfect combination of to-do lists and plans (Jenna) and writing vows the night before the big day (Sarah), Sarah and Jenna enjoyed the perfect wedding day. Creating a loved-up vibe, their celebrant Yazmin worked the ceremony to perfection; allowing the couple to be really present with each other while inviting their loved ones to celebrate in the special moment with them. Despite being the quieter of the couple, Sarah left their friends and family in tears with her incredible vows - a moment they will never forget. Against the backdrop of Mt Duneed Estate, Sarah and Jenna admit they were never planning a winery wedding – but the venue, the versatility of the room and the incredible team were an instant hit and the couple couldn’t think of anywhere else they wanted to get married. Choosing a local small business new to the wedding scene, Sarah and Jenna boast that working with Elyce from All About Love Florals was a highlight. Elyce took the time to really understand the couple and added her own personal touches to their bouquets. For Sarah and Jenna the only downside to their wedding was that it had to end. Time flies when you’re having the celebration of a lifetime, and Sarah and Jenna cannot wait to spend the rest of their lives together reminiscing about their perfect day.

Getting married is one of life’s biggest milestones – a moment of pure happiness and celebration that opens the door to the rest of your lives together. Scott Baker from Liberty shares with us the lending options you may want to consider for your big day and beyond. 1. Start planning early It’s never too early to start planning for your future. Whether it’s in a year, or five years down the track, milestones like your wedding, owning a home, or starting a family all benefit from a game plan. If you’re looking at reaching a few of life’s big milestones while planning your wedding, it’s worth considering how you’ll achieve this. For example, if you plan to own a home soon after your big day, a mortgage broker can get you started on your journey and walk you through each step of the lending process. For any big financial decision, it’s worth consulting a professional to look at things like a savings plan, debt reduction or your borrowing capacity to put you in the right position from the start. 2. Work out what’s important to you Knowing what’s really important to you both as a couple should be an exercise you do early on. Sit down together and think about some of the milestones you want to plan for - write a ‘must-have’ and ‘nice-to-have’ list when it comes to things like your wedding, property, cars, honeymoon etc. If you know what you need and what Scott Baker

you’re happy to compromise on, you’ll be able to better assess your lending needs down the track. 3. Be boring Some lenders require up to three months of bank statements before moving forward with a loan. They look at your living expenses, if you have any undisclosed liabilities and what your savings pattern looks like. It’s important to be boring - lenders love to see very predictable spending and savings patterns, so hold off on buying the big oneoff purchases for now. 4. Get pre-approved If it’s a house you’re ready to prioritise, getting a loan preapproved is an important step. This is where your broker can submit a loan application to a lender and the lender assesses your finances as part of getting an indicative approval up to a set amount. Knowing your exact budget can give you peace of mind and the confidence to make an offer on a property or bid at auction. 5. See a broker It’s never too early to discuss your short and long-term lending goals with a trusted expert. A broker can help educate you on the journey, manage the loan application process and work with you long after you’ve signed on the dotted line. In the years ahead, your goals might change. You may want to renovate, upsize or even invest. A great broker will be with you for your exciting journey as a new family and beyond!

How to include your children in your ceremony If you know me, you know I love weddings that don’t necessarily fit into the societal cookie-cutter mould. Today, more and more couples are choosing to start a family first and once the fog lifts and they’re finally able to dig themselves out of the endless nappy changes, they begin to plan their wedding. For other couples, kids come as a package deal when they meet their one true love. Either way, if you’re looking for fun ways to include children in your wedding day, I’m here to help! I am one of those crazy celebrants who loves working with kids (and dogs for that matter!) and I will go out of my way to make sure children and parents alike are as comfortable and as happy as they can be on the day. In the first edition of the Geelong Wedding Guide Magazine I shared tips and tricks to prepare children for the wedding day so be sure to check that out on the blog. In this edition, I want to give you all the inspiration you need to make children feel loved, appreciated and celebrated on the big day. I have compiled a list of ideas below that have worked well for my couples in the past and will hopefully inspire you on how you can include children on your wedding day: 1. Walking down the aisle If there is one sure-fire way to get emotions flowing, it’s seeing children

walk down the aisle. Whether they are throwing petals, blowing bubbles, carrying a cute sign, linking arms with a parent or being pulled in a toy cart, your guests will be reaching for the tissues in no time! Once all that cuteness is over, you can decide if your little ones will stand with you for the ceremony, sit in the front row, or you might like to set up a rug for them to sit on. Once you’ve decided, be sure to have a plan that you can share with them so they know where to go once they make it down the aisle. 2. Presenting the rings Such a simple yet beautiful way to make your kids feel super special during the ceremony. If they are teeny tiny humans, it’s always lovely when a family member such as a grandparent carries them up to help hand over the precious metal. And if you have two children then you may like to consider them presenting one ring each. 3. Keepsake gift Surprising your children with a special keepsake gift during the ceremony is such a lovely touch and works really well just before you exchange rings. You may like to look at the rings as symbolising the unity of you as a couple, but it can also represent the unity of you as a family. When you present a special gift to your children, it means they have a tangible reminder that they were part of this special day and something 20

they can keep and cherish forever. 4. What is love? If your kids love the spotlight, there is no better way than to hand over the microphone and let them say what this marriage means to them in their own words. Cute to the max! If you don’t trust your kids with a microphone then you can always ask your children a bunch of questions on love like - what does love feel like? What happens when you fall in love? Use the best bits and put them into a reading. It is so fun! 5. I do, me too As you make promises to one another during the ceremony by saying “I do” or writing your own vows to each other, consider including promises to your children too. You could even add in something lighthearted and have your celebrant ask your child to promise to eat their broccoli every night and still give you hugs even when they’re all grown up. I’m sure the answer will be hilarious no matter what! 6. You may now kiss Again, if your little one isn’t one to

shy away from the spotlight, they can be invited up to pronounce their parents married or tell them they can kiss (and even cuter if they cover their eyes while you go in for the smooch!). You might like to have them hold up a sign instead if they’re feeling shy. 7. Circle of Love When it comes time in the ceremony to acknowledge your children, your celebrant could invite your children up to stand with you in a circle and hold hands or wrap your arms around one another. As the celebrant shares some beautiful words, you can have a quiet moment with your children to show them how loved they are. This can work with any family members

really, including parents and siblings and it’s pretty special to witness. 8. Unofficial Witness This idea was born out of a wedding where the couple’s three year old sat on her parent’s lap during the signing of the marriage certificate and she was desperate to sign her name as well. Not ideal on a very official looking document so I quickly whipped out part of my ceremony script so that she could scribble her name over it and she felt very important! Since then, I always carry a family certificate that kids can sign if they would like to be part of this special moment, and it’s always something cute to frame afterwards. 9. Introducing . . . 21

At the end of the ceremony when it’s time to walk back up the aisle as newlyweds and get those celebration vibes going, why not have your children join you. It’s a celebration of you as a couple and you as a family unit so if it fits with your vibe, then rock it I say! I am sure your celebrant will have some wonderful ideas on how to include your children in your special day. Know that is ok to just want the ceremony to be about you as a couple and the love you share for one another. Do what feels right for you, go out there, and have the best day of your life! @jessiebellecelebrant

As soon as we get engaged and begin to plan our wedding day, many of us feel an immediate pull to change our bodies. We might tell ourselves we need to ‘start shedding for the wedding’, buckling under the societal pressure that you must be in the best shape of your life on your wedding day. Wedding diet culture tries to convince you that your body must be smaller to be considered beautiful, that you are not acceptable the way you are, and that your appearance is central to your wedding day. The messages we internalise about body image and diet culture are damaging, leading to increased feelings of anxiety, selfjudgement, and negative thoughts. Some couples engage in radical methods to achieve their desired look, putting their body through extremes such as restricting and purging food or prolonged, intense exercise to achieve their goal. Engaging in these unhealthy behaviours can lead to increased stress and place unwanted strain on your relationship leading up to your wedding day. Clinical Psychologist Tesni Rowlands makes the following suggestions of how you can push back on wedding diet culture and enjoy your day just the way you are: Choose body acceptance It is important to understand that no child is born hating their body and that over time we are shaped to place judgement on bodies and learn what is ‘acceptable’ or ‘ideal’. We are taught that our bodies are an object open to judgement and criticism and we are encouraged to either hate or alternatively love our bodies with no in-

between. Instead of placing judgement, body acceptance helps individuals to wholly accept themselves just the way they are. Accepting your body does not mean always loving your body, something many people struggle to do; but simply acknowledging “this is my body and I accept it the way it is”. By removing all judgement and allowing your body to just be helps us to focus attention on other things which are more meaningful and bring us joy. Tip: create a daily mantra that you can repeat to yourself to help decrease judgement around your body. Focus on the function of your body, rather than its appearance. The more we focus on what our body can do (dance, run, hug, watch, listen) the more we will feel content and appreciate all our body does for us. Diversify your socials The saying “you only know what you know”, also applies to how we digest social media content. Constantly scrolling through a stream of images that idealise certain body types can invoke negative feelings and can have a significant impact on our body image. Though we know images on social media are highly curated, edited and filtered, frequent consumption of ‘idealised’ body types can lead you to feeling as if there is something wrong with the way you look if your body doesn’t match what you see. Luckily, recent times have seen a rise of body positivity and inclusive content, helping to challenge traditional beauty norms. A 2019 Australian study surveyed women after viewing body positive content on Instagram; researchers found

that after viewing diverse content that celebrated all women’s bodies, the women not only experienced increased selfesteem but also reported improved mood overall. Tip: When on social media, pay close attention to how content makes you feel. Any content that leads to negative thoughts or feelings should be unfollowed. For Cobey and Tim, the night they first met is a night they will never forget... well, they’ll never remember it either! Sharing a cheeky kiss on an infamous Geelong dancefloor, 12 years later the couple have had their fair share of milestones. From an awkward ‘will you be my boyfriend?’ chat, a fur baby, a home, a perfectly planned proposal and a baby coming in 2023 (spoiler alert!), the pandemic had other plans for their wedding day. Moving their wedding day from December 2021 to April 2022 meant they could have their nearest and dearest travel from all over Australia and New Zealand for their special day. The world might have stopped in its tracks for nearly two years, but there was no stopping Cobey and Tim celebrating their love for each other.

When Cobey and Tim shared their wedding day with us, there was one special moment that stood out ‘before they even said ‘I do.’ A private first-look between the couple in the coastal town of Barwon Heads. A moment they will never forget. Spending the night before the wedding with family at 19w Lofts, Cobey soaked up the good vibes with her loved ones before the rain decided to literally soak up her dress... Mother Nature had not turned on the perfect wedding-day weather for the couple and the rain did not hold back! Stress-cleaning her dress before walking down the aisle, Cobey was not going to let a little (or a lot) of rain dampen her spirits. With Provence Wines as their backdrop Cobey and Tim said ‘I do’ with all their favourite people present. It wouldn’t be a family affair without the contribution of some special people – Cobey’s nephew took on the role of ring bearer and stole the show with his show-stopping personality, while Cobey’s mother delivered a touching speech in Maori that was translated by Cobey’s niece in English. After a few drinks to get the party going, Cobey could not escape the weather – making her grand entrance with her brand new husband by slipping on some water! And not to be outdone, fire came to play with a candlestick and floral arrangement catching fire and wreaking havoc for a few moments. Sorry but can Mother Nature leave now?! Embracing the night and refusing to let anything get in their way of having a good time, Cobey and Tim spent the evening making up for lost time with their guests; staying present in the moment and acknowledging the long wait they had to get to that point. Sometimes when the universe gives you lemons (read: water, fire and rain), all you can do is make lemonade. We’re sure nothing ever tasted sweeter for Cobey and Tim than the celebration of a once in a lifetime love.

A failsafe guide to taking the stress out of writing your personal vows. Hey there, it’s your friendly celebrant in-the-know here - Jessie Belle! Let me guess, you’re reading this because you and your partner are choosing to include personal vows in your wedding ceremony, but you have no idea where to start? Well have no fear as I am here to guide you through the process every step of the way. The biggest fear I hear from couples when it comes to planning their ceremony is always about writing and saying their vows to each other. I am here to alleviate the stress so you can shake off those worries and enjoy the process. “But how is that possible Jessie?” I hear you say? Oh, it’s possible. Get ready because I am about to throw a whole heap of wonderful ideas your way that by the time you have read through this piece, you’ll be reaching for the sparkly pen and perfume scented paper (Grease reference anyone?) to jot down all the creative ideas you have swirling around your head! Let’s break it down. Personal vows are a personal choice Before we go any further, I may just

saved you a bucketload of stress by bringing this fun fact to your attention: did you know that you don’t have to say personal vows to one another during the ceremony? If the thought of trying to read loving words typed up on a bit of paper through shaking hands in front of your guests is your idea of pure torture, then you can choose to opt out. Just because its tradition doesn’t mean you have to do it. Saying personal vows to each other can be a lovely aspect of the ceremony for those that enjoy the process and it can be the most amazing experience for you and your guests. However, there are so many other ways you can convey your love to each other aside from personal vows if it’s just not vibing with you. Here are some alternative options: 1. Ask your celebrant to say your personal vows on your behalf. Celebrants love, love so use them to your advantage. They can say your words in the third person e.g. Ernie, Bert loves you so much and is so excited to spend the rest of your days bickering about who is going to turn the light switch off each night...”, or they might 60

send each of you questions to answer about the other and piece together the lovely things you’ve said in a few paragraphs. Voila! 2. Write a letter to each other to open on the morning of your ceremony. That way you can start your morning all loved up and the day will just get better from there. 3. Say your personal vows to each other in private during portrait photos. The most treasured part of your wedding day will be the moment the two of you are alone and you can soak up all those ‘just married’ feels! It is the perfect opportunity to find a quiet spot, say your vows to one another and your photographer can hang back and capture the moment. It means you can be more raw and honest (and saucy if that’s your jam!) and say all the things you don’t normally get a chance to tell one another when life is so hectic. Handy fact: Your legal vows are not the same as your personal vows. It is a legal requirement when getting married in Australia to state your legal vows during your ceremony. This is something your celebrant can share with you.

Do you know the real story behind the wedding traditions we welcome in our 21st century ceremonies? Why a bride holds a bouquet? Why veils became a fixture of bridal fashion? There are many wedding traditions that should stay in the past, but there are some really special rituals that you can incorporate into your special day that are symbolic to your love story. Unlike centuries gone by, I’m hopeful everyone reading this article showers regularly. What you may not know is originally a bridal bouquet was used to cover any unpleasant aromas wafting from a bride’s side of the aisle... And unlike couples of the distant past, I can only hope there are no unpleasant surprises waiting for you at the alter on your wedding day. Did you know the bridal veil was introduced to hide a bride’s face? It was only lifted just before the obligatory kiss to stop her soon-to-be spouse running away! Another tradition we can all guess the origins of is the white wedding dress. Thankfully these days any colour and style goes and I have seen it all! A mini skirt, a two-piece set, matching tuxedoes, or a suit inspired by Peaky Blinders. Nowadays we have grooms-women, brides-men, outfits completed with faux flowers or a Lego bouquet that will stand the test of time. You can have the speeches during the ceremony or a sneak peek first-look at your partner before the ceremony takes place. You can have your wedding bands tattooed on during the reception or be like one of my grooms and get a set of golf clubs instead of a wedding band – lucky him! Instead of speeches at your reception, consider asking all of your guests to create a video message and have this played during your reception. Don’t want to have your cake and eat it too? Consider a wall of donuts, roaming desserts or a charcuterie board.

I have seen couples get married over their kitchen bench, in their backyard with stubbies in an esky, in their celebrant’s lounge room, in a graffitied alleyway, in front of two witnesses they only just met or have a 3 day long wedding festival. I know some couples who have asked a friend to become a celebrant so they could marry them, or have a friend host the ceremony with the legally registered celebrant contributing to the legal components to make the marriage valid. I know couples who have hired photography students to capture their day as a win-win collaboration, one couple who got married on horseback, and one bride planning a potluck reception for her wedding where all the guests bring their one favourite dish to help cater the wedding. Want an eclectic way to decorate your reception? Be like one of my couples and ask your guests to bring a dining chair from home. You can pay tribute to the traditional elements that your parents or grandparents had at their wedding by having readings or prayers they did or include mementos like fabric from a family member’s wedding dress or pocket square in your outfit. With Zoom so accessible thanks to a certain pandemic, you can live stream your wedding ceremony to guests that can’t attend or you couldn’t host due to venue capacity. In lieu of a gift registry, you can ask guests to contribute vouchers and donations to your dream honeymoon, new home or to a charity of your choice. Throw tradition to the wind, let your mind run wild and decide what is important to you. You can make your own traditions and do your wedding, your way! With the party well underway, Becky surprised Brian with a limited edition Green Day electric guitar for their planned performance of ‘Time of your Life’ - a movie-like ending to their reception to rival the greatest rom-coms. With a romance that reads like a classic novel and a wedding day that looks like a movie – Becky and Brian finally have each other, the perfect happily ever after.

Ok, I might have got that wrong! Add a whole lotta fun! That’s what makes a great ceremony, right? It engages your guests and when they’re engaged and loving it, so will you. Your celebrant will have a zillion ideas and ways to make your ceremony unique to you and together you can create something that will not only involve your guests, but also be authentic to the both of you. It’s good if you and your partner can form a rough plan for what you both want for your day, this will mean when you go to choose you venue, celebrant, photographer and all your other vendors, you’ll have a damned good idea of what to look for. So, let’s get you started: 1. Your dream ceremony: ceremony: Try to envisage the type of ceremony and vibe you’d both like for your day. Most couples that I work with want a fun, laid-back and relaxed ceremony leading into and setting the vibe for the big party! But not everyone’s the same. Do you want something completely over the top and outrageous? Or would you prefer something short and simple, but still fun. Either way, celebrants are pretty flexible and can accommodate you. 2. Gathering ideas: ideas: Think back to any weddings you’ve been to and try to remember if there was anything about them, and more specifically the ceremonies, that you absolutely loved. Was the celebrant upbeat and fun? Were there any cute little rituals that really worked? Or just as importantly, was there anything you didn’t like about them? Too slow, too boring, too much BS. If you haven’t been to any weddings recently or nothing that sticks in your mind, talk to family and friends to see if they’ve any recommendations for fun elements they might have seen. 3. A fun celebrant: celebrant: Choose the right celebrant. You need to be able to work with this person to create your dream. If you can, arrange to meet with them in person, or if that’s not possible, have a video call. That way you can get a feel for them as a person and as a professional. Are they a good fit for you both? Did you have a laugh together?

Can they tell you about their funniest ceremony? What’s the vibe like between you all? Check out their website for any videos to confirm your instincts. Here’s some easy inclusions that don’t take much time that my couples have had fun with: 1. Guests’ vow: vow : This is an awesome way to break the ice and I normally include it straight after the welcome. I ask guests to raise their right-hand and repeat a few crazy promises after me and they love it. I have a few variations and work with my couple to determine the best one as they know their crowd better than I do. It’s always light, fun and it’s a fabulous way to get everyone laughing and engaged. It’s particularly good with a group who don’t all know each other. 2. Rock, paper, scissors, with a twist! Couples love choosing this game to decide who goes first with their vows but there are other options too. Giulia and Ben chose to toss a hockey puck because one plays hockey. They had it personalized with their initials and the date and is now a keepsake. Nick plays cricket so he and Annie got Nick’s dad to come forward to toss a cricket bat, and Jayde and Luke had a thumb-war because that’s what they like to do to make decisions. This makes your ceremony unique for you and I involve the guests by getting them to join me when calling it. 3. Seal it with a shot! This can be a good way to include someone special in your ceremony. At the end of the signing, your guest comes forward with two shot glasses and a bottle of whatever takes your fancy, pours them for you and you both throw it down to a lot of cheering and congratulations from everyone! One of my couples had the glasses engraved as a lovely keepsake. All the above make for great photos and an interesting, fun ceremony. I’ve got a zillion other ideas and so will your celebrant, just ask! 71

favourite make and model and travel to your ceremony in it, or you can have a time capsule for letters of love accompanied by a bottle of your loved one’s favourite wine -then open the capsule on your first wedding anniversary to drink the wine and read the letters together. You can frame all the wedding photos of your grandparents and proudly have them on display, wear your Mum’s favourite perfume, drive by your childhood home on the way to the church, share a funny adolescent story of you and your sibling, or you might stop by the cemetery and lay a bouquet of flowers on your loved one’s grave. Any way you choose to pay tribute to those you love and miss, make sure it is meaningful to you, symbolic of your love for them and delivered with dignity and grace as they deserve. I hope you know the ones you miss are looking down on you with the greatest of love and the greatest of pride as they watch you marry the one you love. They will find comfort and peace in knowing you have found your soulmate that you will walk life with, until you are reunited with them once more. May your wedding day be filled with precious and treasured memories of those you love, those who wish could be there, if only heaven wasn’t so far away.

I have just one regret from my wedding; not paying a loving tribute to our family members who had passed before our big day. Unfortunately, our celebrant didn’t offer it as part of our ceremony and we just didn’t think to do it. It never crossed our minds that it was something that you could do in a beautiful way, and this is why I strongly encourage all couples to consider if this is something that is appropriate to their circumstances. You can pay tribute to those you love and miss in so many wonderful ways that adds meaning, depth, and heartfelt sentiment without it feeling like you are reliving unhappy memories. You can light a candle in tribute to someone you miss, you can have a framed photo of them sitting by your gift table, by the cake or placed on the seat where they would have sat. You can choose to honour them in the choices you make, things like your flowers or the colours of your bridal party might be personal favourites of those lost, or dedicate a poem to their memory in your ceremony. One of the most touching tributes I have seen is playing a father’s favourite song for the walk down the aisle, a song he would have loved to hear if only he could be there with them on their wedding day to proudly walk his baby down the aisle. Think about all the wedding videos, posts and articles you’ve engaged with recently - can you remember who the celebrant was? Were they tagged? More than likely the answer is no, and as a celebrant of nearly 30 years, I often wonder why this is. For starters, a celebrant is the only service provider needed to be present on the day for a marriage ceremony to be legally recognised, and yet somehow over the years the role they play has faded into the background. When I first started as a celebrant, value was placed on a celebrant by couples who clearly saw the ceremony as a very important part of their day. Compare that to the anecdotes I’ve heard where less money is spent on the celebrant’s fee than an individual’s wedding shoes! The change in focus is now the location, entertainment, flowers and shots. One reason for this might be the saturation of celebrants on the market in recent years, giving couples the opportunity to shop around for the cheapest price, and driving celebrants to lower their fees to gain work. Overall this creates a lasting effect on the entire industry as celebrants devalue their own worth in the overall wedding experience and budget. So how do we address this cultural shift? For me, it’s about sharing with couples just how important the role of a celebrant is to the overall experience. For starters, a celebrant can really set the mood for the entire day – they create the vibe, hold the space and maintain appropriate energy levels. Writing and delivering a ceremony that is authentic, that keeps guests engaged while maintaining the focus on the couple, is worth a greater part of the wedding budget. If a celebrant charges a professional fee, it’s important that they deliver on the perfect ceremony. This looks like :

• Spending time with the couple to capture what is important to them • Writing a ceremony that is unique to each couple, not a copy and paste of the last wedding they delivered • Offering suggestions on special moments, rituals and wet weather plans for the ceremony. • Planning how the ceremony will work within the confines of the venue • Hosting a rehearsal to ensure everything that has been planned will work on the day • Being polite, professional and happy on the day • Ensuring that the energy of the ceremony is appropriate for the couple and their guests • Never taking the focus away from the couple • Working with other service providers on the day to ensure everyone is on the same page • Being the person who keeps the ceremony moving and brings the focus back to the moment. As celebrants, we have a huge responsibility to abide by the regulations and law of the day. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure the couple and their marriage follows the correct legal procedures and contributes to the value of the work celebrants do. The challenge for celebrants now is to become visible again and to value the vital role we play in a wedding. We need to minimise price undercutting, be innovative, keep up with the wave of experiential wedding trends hitting the scene, be mindful of social movements and improve our hashtags on social media. Ultimately, we need to value our work, be dynamic, know our worth and build stronger relationships with other vendors.

If Lou and Jake’s love story was a movie, the opening scene would be one of those meet-cute moments where the main characters are introduced through friends and nothing noteworthy really happens. But you just know the spark is there so you’re hooked! Fast forward ten years (it’s a movie, it goes quickly) and your main characters cross paths again and again until finally, Jake asks Lou out and now the real love story can begin!

When your love story is movie-like, why restrict yourselves to one wedding day when you can have two! For Lou and Jake, sharing their special moment with the ones they love meant hosting a wedding that would bring together family and friends in the most intimate way. Beginning with a small ceremony on Friday afternoon in Lou’s childhood garden, 36 guests watched Lou and Jake say ‘I do’ under the big golden elm tree. Surrounded by flowers arranged by the bride and her mother, Lou and Jake filled their special moment with tokens of love from those they hold dearest. Keeping the moment relaxed and the vibe laid-back, Lou and Jake enjoyed their first meal as husband and wife with their loved ones at Barwon Edge. The following day it was time to celebrate! Overlooking the bay at No.42 at Rippleside, the couple shared their new status as Mr and Mrs with 140 guests. Dancing the night away to DJ Chook and Moluck and captured by the incredible Meg Read, Lou and Jake are so thankful for the special weekend they created to celebrate their love. With final scene of the movie showing the couple getting their happily ever after, we’d say that’s a pretty beautiful way to close one chapter of this love story and we can’t wait to see the sequel come to life!

I was much like you back when I was planning our wedding with my partner-to-be, and there was just no way that we could say “I do” without having our darling cat Theodore by our side. It was such a great idea in theory, but when it came to executing it we realised it was actually a complete nightmare to coordinate! After much deliberation, we ended up asking one of our friends to take on the job, but the guilt I felt for taking her away from enjoying our day fully was immense! It was not long after our wedding that I came to the realisation that with my years of experience as a vet nurse, and now knowing exactly what it’s like to plan a wedding - I was the best person to solve this problem for others! What we do: do: • On the day we arrive to your home in plenty of time to take your dogs for a big walk • We transport your pet to the venue and tour them around the facilities, let them have a good sniff and acclimatize • We dress them to look the part in their wedding-day attire (available for hire as part of our service) • Have them greet your guests they’re arriving and get any pre-ceremony jitters out • Coordinate any role or involvement they have in your ceremony (walking down the aisle as ring bearer or flower dog for example) • Work alongside your photographer to capture those special moments during your portraits • After the formalities are over, we take your pets back home and go through their nighttime routine - feeding them dinner, medicating them if required, picking up any poops in the backyard, tucking them into bed, and overnight sitting if needed.

It is a complete service for your pet on the day - every little thing is taken care of without any effort for you, I guess you could say we’re like your pet’s wedding day PA! 12.04.21 THE BEACH HOUSE GEELONG Once upon a time, two lovers met on Bumble. That’s how the modern romance story goes right? Well, it does for Celia and Cat. Connecting through their uncanny likeness in their profile photos, the couple bonded over a love of sport and four-legged best friends. Spending their first few dates combining their interests against the backdrop of the great outdoors, their love for each other slowly grew alongside the bond of their dogs Tyson and Arthur. Taking a leap and moving to Geelong was the beginning of something big for Celia and Cat, and an extravagant lunch in their new hometown sparked what would be their most exciting adventure yet – planning their non-traditional, dream wedding. Embracing the challenge, Cat ran with the idea of planning a day that would represent the couple and their love for each (and their fur babies) and engaged a team of incredible vendors that would bring their vision to life. For their big day, Celia and Cat briefed their vendors on what mattered most to them when it came to officiating their love in front of their nearest and dearest: a non-typical, weekend extravaganza to showcase Geelong that had their guests’ comfort and enjoyment at the forefront. Easy right?

Tthe H E day DAY

Ditching tradition the couple started their day together and, with their dogs in tow, drove to their wedding to enjoy a pre-ceremony champagne with their guests. Their intimate family-only ceremony joined not only Celia and Cat in marriage, but was also a special moment to witness the adoption of their dogs. With their celebrant Kahani’s guidance, the bespoke ceremony included a rock paper scissors competition, poems written by their sister’s in the voice of their dogs, a rigged raffle and the married couple pronounced by their five-year-old niece. As an ode to their travels in Argentina, the newly married couple enjoyed lunch as Celia’s Opa playing the Masochism Tango on guitar. Switching to party mode, Celia and Cat shimmied off to their reception with 100 of their family and friends. Ditching the traditional wedding cake for a six-tier champagne tower by Miss Fizz, the night was set with Bonza Booth’s greeting guests on arrival (and capturing the party as the night progressed!) while DJ Damo from Geelong Entertainment facilitated the formalities flawlessly. Complete with a Star Wars themed speech, and a perfectly timed first dance to ‘Get on the Beers’ (Covid who?), Celia and Cat’s wedding will be remembered by their guests forevermore. Delivering on their brief to showcase the very best of Geelong, Celia and Cat hosted a picnic the next day along the iconic waterfront. They set the scene with baked goods from The Local, a face-painter for the kids, a gin station with local gins from Anther, Bellarine and Queenscliff and beers brewed by a close friend. Living proof that your wedding day can be whatever you want, however you want it – Celia and Cat broke the mould with their celebration. And we have a feeling that if dog’s could talk, Tyson and Arthur would tell us themselves how special this day was.

With so many budget-friendly stores now offering dupes of stylish event items like crockery, cutlery and linen, many couples are choosing to buy the items they need for their wedding rather than hiring. But is this the best idea? Overall when it comes to buying vs hiring, an argument can be made that it’s more budget-friendly to buy direct from a big-box department store. But it’s important to think about the logistics as well. Ask yourself, are they better quality? Who will transport them to the venue? Who will you need to pay to set them up on the day? Who will you need to pay to have them cleaned at the end of the event? Who will be collecting them and returning them back to you? When you hire your items you don’t have to worry about any of that. It takes away any hidden costs and means you’re not spending extra time on tedious tasks. Another consideration when buying is storing or selling the items after your wedding. How long will that take? Will you be able to sell everything in one hit? Let’s look at an example – linen. For the most part, the quality will not be better if you buy it. Hired linen is generally the best of the best. Its texture is beautiful, its length is expertly measured to fit event tables, and the added lux it adds to a room is priceless. Cheap storebought linen is shiny in all the wrong ways, most often see through and requires more cloth and work to achieve coverage. Selling used linen is normally difficult, especially if your guests enjoyed themselves a bit too much and you have stains on any of the pieces. Unfortunately, this means your items will likely end up in landfill. Cheap décor is another great example that many stores

offer for bargain prices. It can be found in droves on places like Facebook Marketplace and the quality is hard to discern to the untrained eye. But in this case trust me, if you’ve ever had to clean wax out of over a hundred glass vessels, you may think twice about buying over hiring. The newest trend to hit the bargain stores are lawn games and I speak from the experience of running my own hire business, some of the smaller games are great but the larger ones don’t compare to the quality of our hires. They don’t compare in size, quality, or durability. Plus, store-bought won’t set themselves up or pack themselves away. When you hire your money isn’t going to a big corporation whose focus is on pumping out as many low budget items as possible regardless of its impact. Your money is going to a small Australian run business, and most likely a local to your community. One final thought I want to share with you is while you may not think your purchase of one hundred plus plates, cutlery sets, and glassware is a big deal, in reality it adds to greater impacts of consumerism. All those items that you can’t on-sell go to landfill. All that packaging they came in will most likely go to waste. All the places they are manufactured in may not promote healthy workplaces and have fair pay standards. There is often a reason these dupes are so budget friendly. When you hire, you join the hundreds of weddings choosing to lessen their impact by placing their trust in the experts. All that we ask is that you think not just about the costs, but also the impact your purchase will have in the long run. 97

2020 is year most of us are trying to push further back in our memories, but for Addie and Daniel it was the beginning of their love story. After matching online a year earlier, Addie and Daniel summoned the courage to go on their first date in-between lockdowns and have been inseparable ever since. It seems like the universe waited patiently for the right time for these two soulmates to connect, with the timing of their first date – August 1st – also coinciding with both Addie’s grandparents and parents having their first dates, and her grandparents tying the knot on the same day. Another hint that the stars had aligned for the couple was the cottage Addie lived in while dating Daniel. There was an ongoing joke in the community that the cottage was the home you lived in before you got married, and it looks like Addie and Daniel are now couple number three to share the same milestone! Adding two puppies, Bo and Maggie, to their family, Daniel used his big birthday bash to propose to Addie in front of family and friends. Navigating the immigration system and securing a visa for Addie (originally from Canada) it was full steam ahead to their big day.

Planning a wedding can be a big task but luckily for Addie and Daniel, they headed to the Geelong Wedding Guide Expo to seek out what they needed for their big day. Choosing to create a whimsical farm wedding on a private property, their day was full of good vibes and unique touches with antique couches, a caravan bar and Red Hot Chill Peppers playing as the bridal march. Adding an element of surprise to their day, Addie and Daniel decided to keep their ceremony to 20 guests, inviting another 70 to a surprise engagement party. Arriving already married and ready to celebrate, the mood was set for a night they will never forget! We love Addie and Daniel’s wedding story, it just goes to show – it’s your day, celebrate with whoever and however you want!

There is nothing sweeter than your first love, and for Carly and Adam that first spark has never dimmed. Meeting as 15 year old teenagers at their first job, Carly remembers that it was Adam who was the very first person to say hello to her on her first shift (um, shivers!). Often hanging out before their shifts together, Adam plucked up the courage to ask Carly to be his girlfriend and from that moment on they were determined to be with each other; despite attending different schools, high school curfews (remember those?), university schedules, career moves and 6 months of long distance, it all paid off when they were able to buy their first home together in 2020. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Hopetoun Falls in the Otways, Adam proposed to Carly on their eight year anniversary. Wasting no time to start their married life together, the couple chose to use their nine year anniversary to tie the knot.

Enlisting the help of Big Love Elopements, Carly and Adam decided on a wedding list of 21 guests to ensure their special day could still go ahead during the height of the many lockdowns Victoria experienced in 2021. Having all their guests at Glenaire Cottages meant that could host a laidback BBQ the night before the small (but big) day. On the morning of the ceremony, Carly and Adam got ready in separate cottages, trusting Otway Beauty Co for the bridal party’s hair and makeup. Calming any nerves and creating the perfect mood for the intimate ceremony, celebrant Jessie welcomed guests to the Californian Redwood Forest as Carly’s father walked her down the picturesque aisle. But it wouldn’t be a real wedding day without a few mishaps, and thanks to Carly’s father’s sweet but eager hug, Carly’s veil was pulled out of her hair right as she was ready to greet her groom! Captured by Jake from The Hogan’s Photography, Carly is thankful to have this sweet moment caught on camera. Another moment that broke the ice was the unfortunate case of the wedding rings – or so their best man thought! Thankfully it was Carly’s maid of honour to the rescue and a humorous exchange behind Jessie’s back was a perfect way ease any nerves. Adding to the intimacy of the ceremony, Carly and Adam’s 8-day old nephew was able to attend, wearing the little suit the couple has bought for him before he was born (we’re not crying, you are). Hosting their reception at the Top House of Glenaire Cottages, Carly and Adam enjoyed a magical night with their closest loved ones. Thanks to owners Bek and Sev, they were able to relax knowing their guests were taken care of, overlooking some of the best views in the area. We’re so happy for Carly and Adam to finally get their happily ever after together, it feels like fate really knew what it was doing all those years ago.

2020 changed the world in a lot of different ways and for Emma and Mua, their world’s completely changed when they matched online. For their first date, Emma remembers asking Mua to walk to the café with her to avoid the awkwardness of sharing her messy car – but undeterred, Mua and Emma hit it off instantly and they started seeing each other as often as they could. If you ask Toby (Emma’s pet Labrador) the real test for their relationship was when Mua first met Toby. And while the pair didn’t initially hit it off, they soon become best buddies. Combining their families under one roof with Emma’s two children and a newly adopted boxer Laila, Emma and Mua’s relationship has gone from strength to strength. Designing a life for themselves based on true love, respect and appreciation for each other, Emma and Mua only want the best for each other, pursuing their dreams and creating memories as a family.

Jumping at the chance to elope with their sisters as witnesses, Emma and Mua’s big opportunity came when Mua’s sister decided to head back home to New Zealand. Moving fast to secure a date, the couple enlisted the help of Big Love Elopements in early July and by mid-August they were husband and wife! Crediting Love Elopements to a stressfree lead up to their special day, Emma and Mua were ready to say ‘I do’ thanks to the hard work of Jesse and the team. On the day, Emma and Mua went back to café where they had their first date and spent the morning getting ready together with close family. Staying close to Emma’s parent’s home, the couple headed down the road to found a nice quiet spot together along the river and made their love official. A highlight of the ceremony for Emma was Mua clearly writing his vows before Emma’s parents were invited which made for some awkward but hilarious references. Officially married in front of their closest loved ones, the couple spent time capturing the moment with their photographer Jake, soaking up the intimate moment as they chatted and walked for the first time as husband and wife. Continuing the celebration, champagne and good food was enjoyed as the small wedding party headed to Justin Lane for a night made for toasting love.

It was Instagram that first connected Kiara and Matt. Matt requested to follow Kiara and in an attempt to play hard to get, Kiara didn’t follow him back. Fast forward to mutual friend’s cowboy themed 21st birthday party and Kiara made the ultimate power move - confidently walking up to Matt in her full cowgirl get-up, shaking his hand and introducing herself, knowing full-well who he was. From that moment on they’ve been inseparable and Kiara is the first to admit that Matt gives her butterflies every day.

Kiara and Matt credit their preparation and planning ahead of their wedding for everything going off without a hitch. Thanks to some incredible vendors, the couple were able to be fully present in their special moment and celebrate with their loved ones without a care. A highlight for Kiara and Matt was the first time they locked eyes on each other at the ceremony. Kiara was so excited to see her husband-to-be smiling back at her, and share the dress that she had been dreaming of and could finally reveal! A standout vendor for Kiara and Matt was Matt from Coastal Kombi Weddings. Matt went above and beyond for the couple on the day, totalling three trips back and forth to collect the bridal party and collect the couple at the end of the night as husband and wife. Set against the backdrop of Basil’s Farm, the couple were able to soak up the celebrations with their nearest and dearest, creating memories they will never forget. We’re pretty sure Kiara follows Matt on Insta now, and those butterflies are just the beginning of their happily ever after.

Love can be a funny thing. It can bring the person you’re meant to spend your life with into your orbit years before you’re ready to fall in love. For Claire and Zac, they first met eighteen years ago but waited four years before going on their first date. Creating a life together over the next fourteen years, Claire and Zac grew their family by adding a fur-baby and a real baby to the mix.

Choosing Lorne as the spot for their wedding was an easy decision, the couple consider it their second home and it holds a sacred significance to their relationship. Spending their lives around water, the couple hold fond memories of family trips in overloaded Ford Falcons to Cumberland River, summer holidays in Torquay, a special family home in Lorne and last minute surf trips that may or may not have ended in camping in the front seat of a car. Holding on to their connection to the surf, Claire and Zac wanted to honour all the natural beauty this country has to offer when they chose the location for their wedding day. Staying true to what matters most to them, Claire honoured Zac’s New Zealand family who couldn’t attend the wedding with a surprise band – a thoughtful touch that resulted in a lot of tissues. With the sand between their toes and their hearts filled to the brim, Claire and Zac can now add their wedding to the list of reasons why this little corner of the earth is just so very special.

Torquay Where : Torquay Lifesaving Club. Insider tip: At low tide, you can wander around to Rocky Point, getting your toes wet in the rockpools set below the surf coasts’ iconic orange cliffs. If the tide is too high, take a stroll over the water footbridge to Rocky Point Lookout. Point Addis Where: Drive straight to the end carpark and head left towards the decks looking east. Insider tip: The backdrop here is of dense green bushland and orange sandy cliffs - simply stunning. This location is perfect for an afternoon or morning shoot when the sun is low. Barwon Heads Where: Barwon Heads Bluff. You can walk around the headland along the cliff top, or head down to the beach. Insider tip: With a more exposed southern beach, and sheltered eastern bay, you can usually find some shelter even if it’s windy. Take advantage of all the timber stairs which look great in photos. Thirteenth Beach Where: Lookout decks along Thirteenth Beach Road Insider tip: The decks attract the last of the evening sun for soft lighting and an ocean backdrop - this can be a great spot late in the day. Queenscliff Where: Take the time to wander off the main strip and surrounding streets, a great spot is the Queenscliff South Pier. Insider tip: The whole town of Queenscliff is simply beautiful. As one

of the oldest maritime townships in Victoria, built in the gold rush, there is lots to see. A great photo can be taken from the beach to the east of the pier, looking back at the old mustard yellow stilted timber structure. There are some lovely timber walkways through the bush here too. The Bellarine Where: There are plenty of beautiful venues and wineries nearby, one of the best has to be Jack Rabbit. Jack Rabbit boasts a grassy slope on the water’s edge overlooking the You Yangs and Point Henry. Insider tip: With a northwest facing view of ocean and mountains, golden hour and sunsets here are simply stunning. Head straight to the grassy hill for sunset! The surrounding venues also have good views of the You Yangs and photograph beautifully at this hour.

GEELONG

Central Geelong Where: The streets of Geelong. Insider tip: Don’t be afraid to have a drive and wander the streets of Geelong. The beauty of photography is that pictures only show what the camera sees; you only need to find one gem in the rough. This could be a beautiful road, or historic structure with interesting doorways or stairs. Look for long streets with old buildings lined by rows of mature trees (just look out for traffic and parked cars in your shot!) Greater Geelong Where: Provenance Wines. Insider tip: A beautifully converted mill with high ceilings and bluestone 168

walls, set high on the bank of the Barwon River. The water is a bit hard to get to, so try the cute little alleyways around the complex with its many grand doors and brick chimneystack. Where: Geelong Botanical Gardens. Insider tip: Take a stroll in the gardens and look for small scenes you like; a path surrounded by trees, the entry gate and sign surrounded by plants, or an area of large mature succulents. This spot is perfect for upclose photographs – the focus on you and your partner, but with hints of the beautiful and interesting garden behind. Where: Balyang Sanctuary Insider tip: Perfect for quick elopements! If you walk around the area there are a few spots for a small ceremony. Try around the car park at the end of Marnock Road for photos amongst the trees, or the rundown brick building and chimney stack to the east; this can generate some great snaps, especially when the grass is long and dry. Where: Bushland. Insider tip: The feeling of the Australian bush can be captured only a stone’s throw away from a busy suburb or

street. Get out your map and have a look around your wedding venue or ceremony location. Are there any walking tracks or parks nearby? A photographer only needs snippets of an environment to set a scene. If you find a path or set of trees you like, why not take a photo and pin drop a location to your photographer for their advice. Have fun and explore! Where: Dog Rocks Sanctuary, Batesford. Insider tip: This is a special spot. Giant stones are set in the middle of a field with a view of the countryside for miles! It’s a perfect golden hour spot for walking among the rocks, grass and trees with a photographer in tow capturing everything that

unfolds. Treat the place with respect, it has a very spiritual feel. Access is to the north via the playground; just be mindful of the time of year and snakes coming out to say hello. Always have a backup! Unfortunately, living in Victoria means you could have all four seasons predicted for your wedding day. It’s always a good idea to have a few backup photo spots up your sleeve so you’re ready to go on the day no matter what Mother Nature throws at you. Cloud and rain can create some epic backdrops for wedding photos, in fact it can be preferable to a sunny day. In the event of strong winds joining the party, find some shelter 169

among trees, or in the doorway of a structure, these can make great shots. A backup suit/dress is never a bad option when wet weather is involved! If it does rain, the biggest tip from me is for you to stay dry! Grab yourself a clear umbrella and enjoy the shoots you were already planning! Your photographer should have a raincoat and photography gear that can handle a bit of rain, or an assistant to hold a brolly! And remember, it’s your day – embrace it, have fun, stand out in the wind and pouring rain, your photographer will love you for it! @weddings.with.alex

How many puns can you fit into a love story? Probably not what you were expecting to read, but the circumstances of Zoe and Tristian’s first interaction are not something we can ignore. Zoe and Tristian first met at University while studying optometry. Cute, but wait for it. Their first real interaction was blind-drunk, on the dancefloor at their faculty’s biggest night of the year – the Eye Ball. Come on! It was meant to be! Originally from different parts of the country, Zoe and Tristian have done life together in many different ways. In opposite hometowns together, separated by long distance, and in a brand new city they explored together to create their own new memories. After building a life together on their own terms, the pair became engaged a year after their biggest move yet and starting planning for the perfect day that will would bring together everything and everyone they love.

Surrounded by the olive grove and vineyard of Merne at Lighthouse, Zoe and Tristian worked with their vendors to create a blissful and serene celebration of their love. Perfectly captured by their photographer Courtney (The Hogans Weddings), a highlight for the couple was their firstlook before the wedding ceremony. The chaos of the day melted away in the privacy of this intimate moment, and Zoe and Tristan will forever has this special memory of just the of two of them on their special day. Both coming from families of four siblings, Zoe and Tristian filled their wedding party with their brothers and sisters – Tristian’s sister taking on the role of best-woman and Zoe’s brothers as her brides-man and flower-man. A truly special moment for their parents to see all the children standing at the altar supporting each other. Setting the scene for the night to come, music from Isaac McKenzie got everyone moving and from there the night was one big celebration. You know we couldn’t end this love story without another pun, but we just couldn’t see eye to eye on which one to use.

WRITTEN BY JESSICA ALDERTON In the words of the great Aretha Franklin “All I’m askin’, is for a little respect” Dreaming of, planning and organising a wedding is so much fun! However, the realities of it all can be super stressful and at times, stressed out couples can unintentionally project this pressure onto their vendors. As vendors we know what a big day it is for you, but the accidental disrespect can hurt. Having been both a bride and a vendor I feel I can play a great mediator in this article on how best to manage the wedding planning stress and keep the relationship you have with your vendors respectful. One of the important things to remember is that most wedding vendors are small businesses, usually sole traders. They often work multiple jobs and while we love our job, we’re not exactly rolling in dough. I personally work three, technically four, jobs as well as being a single parent. Every second that I pour into making sure your day is perfect is precious to me. It’s late nights and weekends away from my children. I don’t share this to make you feel sorry for me, I love my job! And I love it so much I pour my heart and soul into each and every wedding I book. The smiles and happy tears on my couple’s faces make it all worth it. But it’s because I love my job so much that any unwarranted negative behaviour is taken very personally. I have been blessed to experience very little stress related conflict with my couples, but I have seen other vendors in tears. There are always two sides to a coin and some couples may feel their added stress is because of their vendor’s actions. Maybe you haven’t received what was promised or you’re disappointed in the communication. Unfortunately, there are small number of unprofessional vendors out there that will cause unnecessary stress, and like all of us, there will be amazing vendors that make genuine mistakes. The difference between the two is that a good vendor should always apologise for a mistake and will often go out of their way to fix it.

Some ways to limit potential problems with your vendors is clear communication. Read your contract, quotes, and invoices thoroughly. Pay close attention to what is and what isn’t included. Unsure about a certain point in the contract? Ask your vendor. Not clear what’s provided? Ask your vendor. Feeling stressed out about a certain part of your big day? Let your vendor know. We’re here to help you. We, just as much as you, want your day to run as smoothly and be as perfect as can be. If you have a concern leading up to the day, we want to hear about it. If you are feeling frustrated by a vendor, before you hit send on that email or pick up the phone, take a breath. Pause, relax and think about the person on the end of that call or email. Give them the benefit of the doubt that they are busy, tired, and only human. Give them the benefit that they are unaware that something about your day is stressing you out. Give them the benefit that they will go out of their way to remedy this stress when spoken to respectfully. Behind the scenes of a wedding can be manic, things go wrong all the time. As vendors we work together and hustle like you wouldn’t believe to work our magic and fix every problem we can. But sometimes even our magic isn’t enough. At the end of the day ask yourself : did you get to marry the one you love the most? Did your guests have the time of their life? Did you dance the night away? Try not to worry about the little things, the accidents, and the mishaps out of everyone’s control. Your vendors will already be beating themselves up about it, and the kindest thing you can do is let them know you appreciate them and that you had the time of your life. The relationships we as vendors build with some couples is beautiful, I’ve been lucky enough to share some of life’s biggest milestones with my couples well past their wedding day. And while we always will give one hundred and ten percent to all our couples, it’s those special ones, the ones who show us the greatest kindness and respect, who get a little bit more of our hearts poured into their big days. 191

Remember those family friends your parents forced you to hang out with growing up? Those innocent friendships you make easily as a kid, but are harder to maintain as an adult? While life takes you in different directions, it’s hard to forget those first uncomplicated connections. For Zoe and Ryan, all those years as childhood friends built an incredible foundation for the love they would find with each other as adults. Growing up together but living separate lives until their paths crossed again years later, an innocent exchange of phone numbers at a nightclub brought Zoe and Ryan back in each other’s orbit. After months of denying just how much they liked each other, the universe finally caught up with them and they fell in love. With the stars all aligned, life was one beautiful ride after that. A home, two babies and a proposal later, the perfect wedding day was next in line for these magnetic soulmates.
