Who knew you could print a new outlook on life? As a freshman driving home from college for Thanksgiving, Alyssa was in a devastating car crash that shattered her legs and crushed her right ankle. She was airlifted to UF Health, where doctors performed multiple life-saving surgeries, including placing a donor ankle bone into her badly damaged joint. Within months, the graft began to fail, leaving Alyssa facing the possibility of a fused joint or even amputation. Then the experts at UF Health suggested a radically new surgery – implanting a 3D-printed chromium alloy ankle bone, precisely engineered to match Alyssa’s body. With her customized ankle replacement, Alyssa didn’t just recover; she got her life back. Today, she can walk across campus with confidence and recently did something that once seemed impossible: she explored Paris on foot with her mom.

perated by Sarah Sturges and Jeff Rundle, Sarah Sturges LLC [SS LLC] is a full-service training program based out of Queen City Equestrian, owned by Dr. Bryan McNabb and Kelsey McNabb, built on a modern vision for the sport where competitive excellence and a balanced lifestyle coexist. While their success in the show ring speaks for itself, Sarah and Jeff have created a culture and community that extends beyond ribbons. Their vision combines the high standards learned from some of the sport’s top programs with a

focus on balance, accessibility and opportunity for riders at every level. Together, their regard for the people and horses of the sport has created a sanctuary for their team based in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio.
THE FOUNDATION Both Sarah and Jeff knew horses would play a pivotal role in their futures. For Sarah, that connection began alongside her mother, Diana Sturges, who introduced her to horses at a young age. “My mom always rode. She had a horse and I rode around on it with her when I was little. When

I was five, I knew I wanted to be a professional, and I never really deviated from that,” Sarah shared. She spent 14 years developing under the tutelage of Adie Amorose in Columbus, Ohio, before eventually moving to Cincinnati after high school where she began working with one of the top programs in the country. During nearly a decade with New Hope LLC, Sarah gained invaluable experience and developed a foundation that would pave the way to her own business. “Around seven years old I went to a riding camp in Canada,” Jeff shared of his journey. “It was a summer camp at a farm just outside of London. I did that for a week, then I leased a pony that I had ridden at camp and I carried on from there. It was the only camp I ever really liked!” That passion eventually led Jeff to work with some of the top hunter programs in Canada, including the program of 2019 Jump Canada Hall of Fame rider and trainer Wayne McLellan.

BUILDING SOMETHING DIFFERENT In 2019, Sarah stepped away from the fast-paced travel schedule of a toplevel show program with gratitude. “I traveled for a long time and it was incredible. But I had a couple good horses and I wanted to see if I could make a go of it on my own with some freelancing, buying and selling,” Sarah shared. “I did that for about a year and I wasn’t making enough money. So, I picked up some smaller clients along the way and it slowly turned into more,” she continued. “I took on one

client because she was a friend, then a couple more because I needed staff, and it just kind of grew from there. Now, here we are,” Sarah laughed. When Jeff eventually reconnected with Sarah nearly two years after returning to Canada, he became an important addition to the team. “He does a lot of the stuff that I don’t do very well, or I don’t like to do
as much, and he does,” Sarah laughed. “He’s a very good counterpart to me. I really wanted him to be a part of what I was building.” “I think we’ve tried to take everything we’ve learned from the programs we’ve worked in,” Sarah explained. “Both of us worked at some of the top programs in the country and we’ve taken

that attention to detail, intensity and commitment with us.” “But we’ve also tried to create a system that is more affordable and allows for more balance,” Sarah continued. “People want things done well and correctly, but they don’t want to spend every weekend traveling far away. It creates a middle ground that can be hard Photo: WEC to find in the sport.” “A big part of our program is being open to a variety of clients and recognizing that regardless of someone’s goals, our goals are the same,” Jeff explained. “We want everyone to have fun and to be safe, we want the horses to improve and be happy, and we want the same standard of care and attention for everyone.” At WEC – Wilmington, young horses and riders can gain valuable experience at a top venue while offering clients a competitive schedule without the same level of travel. “WEC has been great for us because it allows us to show while also having lives at home,” Sarah said. “A lot of our clients are working amateurs or people with kids in

school. They don’t necessarily want to fly every weekend or spend money on hotels. The venue opens up showing opportunities for a lot of people.” “At WEC, it gives horses an opportunity to jump meaningful, featured classes. The horses know the difference. And on the other hand, all of our clients and young horses can school in the rings. It is amazing for developing horses and riders.”
THE REWARD While SS LLC’s list of championships is undeniable, Sarah and Jeff exude positivity and kindness into an industry that can often lose sight of what makes the sport meaningful. With the happiness of the horses

ehind the success of SS LLC is a partnership rooted in trust and shared belief in the sport. Sarah and Jeff operate out of the farm owned by Dr. Bryan McNabb and Kelsey McNabb, whose support has become an integral part of the program. For Sarah and Jeff, the farm is more than a place to train and develop horses. It has become a home base — a place where they have been given the freedom, trust and support to build their program. The McNabbs have created an environment where they can do what they do best: develop horses, support their clients and continue building something meaningful together.
and the people who make up their community at the forefront of their business, their genuine compassion shines through in each partnership under their guidance. “I love young horses. I love watching them figure things out,” Jeff said. “And with teaching, most people are there because they want to learn. A lot of it is figuring out how to explain something in a way that makes sense to that person,” he explained. “Everyone learns differently and finding ways to help our riders achieve their goals is the rewarding part.”

pectators arrive at World Equestrian Center – Ocala expecting the thrill of competition: the rhythmic cadence of a canter stride, the precision of horse and rider in the ring, the bated applause that follows a flawless round. What they may not expect is to pause before a watercolor painting of a soulful mare or a bronze sculpture that captures the quiet dignity of a horse at rest. Yet just inside Indoor Arena 2, The Gallery Off 80th offers exactly that. Paintings, sculptures, ceramics and handcrafted decor transform the arena entrance into a celebration of the equestrian lifestyle. The pop-up exhibit has welcomed visitors for nearly a year, but the vision behind it has been more than a decade in the making. Now, its next chapter is just around the corner, with plans to open at The Shoppes Off 80th in the coming months.

There isn’t really anything out there like The Gallery Off 80th... The subject is deeply personal, as some of her fondest childhood memories are riding down the road with her sisters on horseback. A lifelong horsewoman, she has painted horses since the beginning of her career, drawn to the calm and connection they inspire. Fifteen years later, that concept has flourished into a collaborative collective, with every artist and piece displayed personally selected by Tappan. Wallace’s path was different. After decades spent crisscrossing the globe spearheading corporate development, she left the business world to pursue work that brought her closer to horses, eventually

opening a tack shop in North Carolina, where she met Tappan. Their friendship grew into a partnership built on a shared belief that equestrian art deserved a home of its own.
Together, they envisioned more than an art gallery. They wanted to create a welcoming space that celebrated not only horses themselves, but the culture, lifestyle and community surrounding them.

MAKING EQUESTRIAN ART MORE ACCESSIBLE “There isn’t really anything out there like The Gallery Off 80th,” Wallace says. Collectors interested in equestrian art often find themselves searching across multiple galleries, where horse-inspired work is rarely treated as its own category. Early into her career, Tappan observed that however skilled, equine art rarely earned the same regard from the traditional art world as other contemporary fine art. Tappan and Wallace are determined to change this perception, sharing a mutual hope to “elevate equestrian art as a fine art subject.” Just as importantly, they want to make collecting feel approachable. That philosophy is evident in the exhibit’s temporary placement at an arena entrance rather than inside a traditional gallery. Instead of asking people to seek out the artwork, they let the artwork become part of the spectator experience. “The Indoor Arena 2 pop-up has allowed us to tap into people who didn't know they needed art,” Wallace says. The founders believe traditional galleries can sometimes feel intimidating, particularly for first-time

buyers. Whether someone arrives looking for a statement piece or simply wanders in between events, The Gallery Off 80th invites them to engage with the artwork without pressure.
A CURATED COLLECTIVE The Gallery Off 80th isn’t your traditional gallery, instead much more of a “curated collective.” The distinction reflects the founders’ philosophy that relationships matter as much as the artwork itself. Today, the collective features more than 30 artists working across sculpture, painting, ceramics,
woodworking, photography and other mediums. Each artist is selected not only for the quality of their work but also for their desire to engage with the broader equestrian community. Both founders look for the same thing in an artist. “We look for a distinct body of work that defines the artist and for those who want a deeper connection with the community,” Tappan says. For them, that connection is often what's missing from traditional gallery experiences and inviting the artists into the conversation makes collecting more meaningful.

The Gallery Off 80th: Art at the Arena’s Edge
FINDING A HOME AT WORLD EQUESTRIAN CENTER When the founders began searching for the right location, they wanted more than retail space. They wanted a destination that already served as a gathering place for horse enthusiasts. World Equestrian Center – Ocala’s world-class competitions, luxury amenities and engaged equestrian community provided the ideal audience for The Gallery Off 80th. Its temporary home inside Indoor Arena 2 has allowed the founders to build the brand’s presence on the property and reach a new audience with whom it deeply resonates. Later this fall, The Gallery Off 80th plans to open a permanent

efore the first guests stir in their rooms, before a single class has run, a warm aroma drifts through The Equestrian Manor like a quiet announcement: someone is preparing for the moment everyone wakes. It’s 4am, and Executive Baker Ed Pinkos is already elbow-deep in dough, tending to a five-year-old sourdough starter introduced at Emma’s Patisserie at World Equestrian Center – Ocala earlier this year. By sunrise, the ovens will have turned out French baguettes with crackling crusts, pillowy dinner rolls and a cinnamon swirl raisin loaf that regulars have been known to reserve in advance. “Bread takes time, effort and heart,” says Pinkos.
‘Allowing the bread to ferment longer presents a much better flavor,’ Pinkos explains. ‘Fresh baked bread daily, by hand, will beat a supermarket loaf of bread any day of the week. That’s what Emma’s is known for.’

It is the realization of a vision that has always been part of Emma’s Patisserie: a robust bread program meant to nourish every visitor and inspire a deeper appreciation for the craft within the community. Often described as “gymnastics on horseback,” it combines acrobatics with elements of dance and horsemanship. Depending on the level of competition, routines may be performed at the walk, trot or canter. In FEI competition, routines are performed at the canter as the horse travels in a steady circle under the guidance of a lunger. Every performance depends on the teamwork of all three participants. The vaulter provides strength, balance and expression, the horse supplies rhythm and consistency, and the lunger creates the steady foundation that allows each routine to unfold.
HOW COMPETITION WORKS Most vaulters begin their journey on a stationary practice barrel, where they learn proper technique,
horse circles the arena as a lunger maintains a steady rhythm from the center of the ring. Depending on the level of competition, a vaulter performs a routine featuring a variety of balance, strength and acrobatic exercises on the horse’s back, all while it continues its steady stride. The seamless partnership between horse, vaulter and lunger creates

balance and body position before progressing to a moving horse. As their skills develop, athletes advance through different competition levels, eventually performing routines on horseback. Vaulting competition takes three main forms. Individual competitors perform solo routines that showcase strength, balance and artistry.
Pas de deux features two vaulters performing together, requiring exceptional timing and trust. Squad competition involves teams of six vaulters, who perform individually in the compulsory phase and then combine in the freestyle, where up to three vaulters may be on the horse at once to create lifts, stands and pyramid-like formations.
With roots stretching back to ancient Greece and Rome, vaulting is one of the oldest equestrian sports – yet remains a fascinating discovery for many modern spectators. Often described as ‘gymnastics on horseback,’ it combines acrobatics with elements of dance and horsemanship.
While each format is unique, judges evaluate universal core qualities: technical execution, artistic presentation and the harmony between horse, vaulter and lunger. The horse is scored as an athlete in its own right, with judges considering the quality and consistency of its canter throughout the performance. To succeed, all three partners must appear to be moving and performing as one.

dream that began seven years ago will come to fruition with the inaugural Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) Pan American Equestrian Confederation (PAEC) Championship of the Americas, a three-discipline event to be held from January 19-31, 2027, at World Equestrian Center – Ocala (WEC). Cesar Hirsch, President of PAEC since 2019, and his fellow board members have long hoped to establish a standalone equestrian championship that brings together most of the 30 countries comprising the Americas. With the steadfast support from the host national federation, US Equestrian (USEF), guidance from the FEI and leadership from the accomplished team at WEC, fans of equestrian sport will be able to cheer on teams in jumping, dressage and eventing from both hemispheres.

Originally from Venezuela, Cesar Hirsch is a globally respected leader in the equestrian industry with more than 30 years of experience at the highest level of international sport, including Games and Championship planning and delivery and as an FEI Level 4 Judge and Chief Steward. His career is distinguished by continuous involvement in Olympic Games, World Championships and major FEI events, with a strong focus on sport integrity, operational excellence and equine well-being. He is currently serving as the Subject Matter Expert – Equestrian for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Founded in 2001, PAEC is the official continental authority recognized by the FEI, Panam Sports and major sports associations. The board includes Hirsch, USEF President and Group IV Representative Tom O’Mara, FEI Group IV Chair Monique Archer (BAR), FEI Group V Chair Daniela

García Nigaglioni (MEX), FEI Group VI Representative Luiz Roberto Giugni (BRA), FEI Group VI Chair Esteban Abedrabbo (ECU), and Athlete Representative Tiffany Foster (CAN). Jaime Morillo (ECU), who is part of the FEI Solidarity Program to promote and develop sustainable and structured equestrian culture and sport worldwide, is the PAEC Sport Development Officer, while Elena Couttenye (VEN) is the Games & Championships Coordinator at PAEC. Hirsch and Garcia Nigaglioni advocated for the Championship to create more opportunities for riders across the Americas, grow the sport and build a structured pathway for athletes. The idea was a continuation of PAEC’s mission of supporting and growing equestrian sport from the grassroots to the elite level. “Obviously, countries like the USA, Canada, Mexico and Brazil have solid, successful equestrian
programs and are already on the podium at the World Championships and the Olympic Games, but the sport is growing in other parts of the Americas,” said Hirsch. “PAEC wants to give them more opportunities to elevate their performance, strengthen regional development and create a structured pathway for athletes. There are countries that dream of fielding teams for international competition, so PAEC must serve them all. We want to build a legacy.” The Championship will combine elite performance with meaningful development opportunities. For some National Federations, it will serve as a platform to field their top athletes and refine preparation ahead of major championships such as the Pan American Games. For others, it provides a valuable opportunity to introduce emerging talent and support the progression of the next generation of athletes.

The Americas Ride Together at World Equestrian Center
This dual-purpose approach allows each National Federation to participate in alignment with its own high-performance strategy while strengthening the competitive landscape of the Americas. When developing the idea for the FEI PAEC Championship of the Americas, there was never any question about where the organizers wanted to hold it. Hirsch approached the team at WEC and the wheels were soon in motion. “The best timing for the Championship is in the winter, so participants have more options to compete,” he said. “Holding it in conjunction with a show during
WEC’s Winter Spectacular Show Series allows athletes to stay longer, bring additional horses or have clients join them. This makes it financially viable for many athletes.” A preliminary conversation with WEC Show Manager Jon Garner helped identify the schedule and the number of countries that could attend. PAEC received approval of the concept from the FEI and USEF, which fully supports the event with the host agreement. “I think it’s the best venue in the world,” expressed Hirsch. “The hotels, parking, restaurants, service and atmosphere – it’s all amazing. WEC also prioritizes the safety and
well-being of the horse throughout its operations. It’s like a dream come true and everyone at PAEC is so proud to have the first edition at WEC. We are grateful to everyone at WEC for trusting PAEC with this project.” On behalf of WEC’s owners, the Roberts Family, Mason Jordan noted, “We are thrilled to host the inaugural FEI PAEC Championship of the Americas. WEC was purposebuilt to hold the best equestrian competition in the world, and it is an honor to welcome athletes for the first time to our facility.” All competition will take place at WEC, except for the eventing cross-country phase, which will

be held at the nearby Florida Horse Park thanks to a partnership with organizer Emily Holmes and manager Jason Reynolds, whom USEF suggested. “It is a very nice facility that already hosts top eventing competitions and they know what is needed for an event like this,” explained Hirsch. “It’s a turnkey operation. From day one, we clicked.” The vision for the FEI PAEC Championship of the Americas is to be a quadrennial event, with plans to add additional disciplines, such as para dressage and vaulting, in the future. The strategic objective is for the Championship to become an established qualification pathway for the Pan American Games, in addition
to the current various Regional Championships. With an estimated 16 to 20 countries expected to participate in the inaugural 2027 event, the international atmosphere at WEC will be unmatched. The FEI PAEC Championship of the Americas is the only FEI medal championship for senior teams in the Americas. “The icing on the cake is the opportunity to win an FEI medal,” said Hirsch. “PAEC is shaping history in the sport with this new event.”

Wilmington is one of the best-kept secrets in American horse sport. The facilities are unbelievable, the people are friendly and the course design is always really good at both WEC venues. We use it as a bit of a building stop for some of the horses. It’s always on our calendar.

It’s a beautiful area. I always feel very comfortable here and everyone is so nice. The facilities here are amazing. It’s so clean and there are really nice warm-up areas. The horses feel very comfortable here too. The stalls are amazing, super fences and super footing. I have to say everything is so well taken care of and I really love this horse show.

A few things really set WEC – Wilmington apart. First, you have an amazing team here. Everywhere I turn, everyone I talk to or ask for help is always so accommodating and willing to help. Everything is done to a really high standard. The stabling is very good, the footing is extremely good, the jumps are nice and the course building is excellent. If you’re judging a venue purely on the quality of the sport and the quality of the facilities, there really aren’t many places better than this one. I’m a purist — I come here for the sport, and it is done exceptionally well.

There’s an abundance of places to ride. You don’t normally get a horse show with this amount of space, and for a horse like Narcotique [V/H Dingenshof], who’s incredibly horse-shy, I think that’s why she jumps better here than almost anywhere else. I can give her plenty of space and time to warm up. Everybody here is super nice and generous, the prize money is good and it’s just a relaxed, fun show.

I think the classes that are offered at this facility are the reason why I can produce a horse like this. We brought him here as a young horse, and on a national level, we were able to step him up into the Futures Prix and the 1.40m Classics. It’s great that you can do the four-star and the two-star in the same week. As a rider, when I can compete my older, more experienced horses in the four-star, this horse could do the two-star classes and build himself up. This is the result.

I still cannot believe there’s a horse show facility that makes you want to go to Florida in July, and it does. With the indoor arenas, the horses are happy, and they always leave here better. From the indoors to the outdoors, to riding in the fields and on the bridle paths, you can really step a horse up here.

I am from California, and what initially attracted me to WEC was the U25 classes. There’s so much prize money and so many opportunities for up-and-coming riders here. That was really important to me,” she expressed. “The longer I spend here, the more I want to extend my stay,” she added. “They do such a good job, the footing is great and the indoors with the air conditioning is huge for my horses coming from California. I feel like WEC has done everything they possibly can to make it great for the horses here, and I think my horses are showing that and they’re thriving.
