aliburn Farm has two stunning locations in Marshall, Virginia, and Ocala, Florida, and each property holds its own unique beauty. The facility in Marshall, Virginia, boasts a 15-stall barn along with a 6-stall barn, set on a sprawling 140 acres with a luxurious indoor arena and plenty of turnout. The Ocala, Florida, location also houses two barns, one 19-stall barn and an additional 12-stall barn, set on 49 acres shaded by hundred-year-old oak trees.

Caliburn Farm is owned by Gail Dady who describes her innate passion for horses, “I was told I loved horses even before I could walk or talk. I believe some of us are born with a ‘horse gene’ – yet to be discovered by scientists maybe, but real!

If you have the gene, you have no choice but to have horses as a part of your life.”

Gail is quick to recognize the team effort that makes Caliburn Farm’s two locations run smoothly.

“Everyone on our team is essential, and they are all exceptional. Our trainers, Agustin and Bree Rosales are the heart of the team and have been with Caliburn since the beginning. They are two of the kindest people you would ever want to meet, and they always put the welfare of the horses above all else. Our grooms, Keara and Macie are some of the best in the business and are completely dedicated to ensuring the horses are healthy and happy. Our managers and caretakers keep the farms going and allow us to focus on the horses.

I am really proud of all of them and could not ask for more.”

For us this is about these magnificent animals that bring so much into our lives. They are our focus, and any business aspects are a distant second.”

Trainer Bree Rosales grew up on a small farm in Michigan.

“My mom had a few horses, and my sister and I were very drawn to them right from the beginning. I started out riding ponies in the hunter divisions, but as soon as I was tall enough for a horse I moved into the jumper ring. We did all the care ourselves and only

went to a handful of shows during the summer, but I was fortunate enough to make it to pony finals on my green pony and got to show at some great venues in the Low Junior jumpers on my Off-TheTrack-Thoroughbreds.”

Bree’s husband, Agustin, fondly known around the farm as “Chicho,” is the other half of a training duo at Caliburn Farm. “Chicho's start to riding was quite different,” Bree shared. “His older brothers did show jumping in Argentina, but Chicho's introduction to horses was with vaulting until he had an accident at 7 years old, and that was the end of it. In 2003, Chicho was studying Architecture in Argentina when his friend, Pato Muente, called and asked if he'd like to come to the United States for a season and help him in the stable. That was the beginning for him, and at the age of 19, he spent a winter in Wellington working for Pato and learning everything about horse care. That time in Wellington ignited his passion for horses, and he

decided to apply for a visa and stay. The following summer, Pato began giving him riding lessons. He would put him on a horse at the end of each day and teach him.”

Bree started her professional career working for Pato alongside Chicho in 2007, which then led her to Gail and Caliburn. “That's how we met Gail Dady, she owned a handful of horses with Pato and we cared for them for many years. Gail always treated us like family and we had a great relationship from the beginning. After spending two years in Germany with Pato, we decided to move back to the United States and Gail offered us a job at her farm in Marshall, Virginia.” The pair moved to Caliburn farm in 2012, “…and that was really the start of our professional career where we had to manage the horses, farm, staff and training on our own. Gail is very involved and has been a huge support in helping us grow and shape our career. ”

Gail recalls her decision to make World Equestrian Center – Ocala Calburn’s winter show destination. “Two years ago, Mrs. Roberts was kind enough to give us a tour as the construction was in full swing. I knew it would be an amazing facility, but when she mentioned she planned to put up a statue of Sgt. Reckless, she had me. As a Navy veteran, Sgt. Reckless has been a long time ‘hero’ of mine. I knew at that point WEC would be special because of such a deep appreciation for what horses have contributed to our history and our lives.

She could have paid tribute to a famous athlete or a household name in the horse world, which is certainly important; but instead, she chose a little Mongolian mare purchased by the Marine Corps for $250, who was the epitome of courage, intelligence, determination and loyalty.

To me, that is what horses are all about.”

It is clear that the horses at Caliburn are cherished. When asked to talk about the special horses in the barn, Bree explains, “All of our

Everyone on our team is essential, and they are all exceptional.” horses are special, but I would have to say that Bonitio and Voigstdorfs Quonschbob really stand out. Gail bought Bonito with Pato in Argentina when he was 5 years old. Today he is 23 and mostly retired, but continues to be Gail's personal riding horse. He is the most saintly soul you'll meet and a barn favorite. Quonschbob is another exceptional horse in our barn. We bought him from Andre Thieme five years ago after he placed (for the second year in a row) in the Hamburg Derby. He has been the best teacher and teammate for both of us. He has brought us to Grand Prix victories and taken us around some of the biggest tracks of our careers. This year he turns 17 and still loves his job and has the best attitude about life every day.”

While it is evident that Caliburn Farm is a special place, Gail sums up their philosophy beautifully, “For us this is about these magnificent animals that bring so much into our lives. They are our focus, and any business aspects are a distant second.”

4:40 a.m.

I have two alarms set each morning. I wake up and take my dog, Red, outside. Then, I have a big glass of fresh orange juice and head to the gym.

Equestrian Center – Ocala, leads the standup. I feel very lucky to have such an experienced chef like him to look up to, with whom I get to improve my skills and knowledge.

6:00 a.m.

10:00 a.m.

I usually work out for a little over an hour and I go about three or four times per week. I have always liked working out, it helps me focus and keep a balance. The gym is only about five minutes from World Equestrian Center, so it is pretty convenient.

A quick change in the lockers from a tank top to my chef coat and I’m on my way to work.

We also have a standup at Miss Tilly’s Lollipops each morning to discuss the topics of the chef’s standup. All of the scheduled team is present, which includes up to six pastry cooks, two stewards, the front of house team and Chef Alberto

7:15 a.m.

When I arrive at Miss Tilly’s Lollipops at World Equestrian Center – Ocala, two to three of the team members are already baking, finishing up breakfast and setting up the desserts for the on-site restaurants.

Next, I sit down at the computer and go through my emails. That typically takes me about 30 to 45 minutes. I also go over what needs to be done that day with the team. I always keep my portfolio with me, which contains my iPad, my ongoing projects and a bunch of papers that should have been thrown away about two months ago.

Febo and Chef Kari Howards. Alberto Febo, Executive Pastry Sous Chef, and Kari Howard, Pastry Sous Chef, also help me run the standup. We discuss the topics from the chef’s standup, then go over what is more specific to Miss Tilly’s Lollipops.

9:00 a.m.

11:00 a.m.

All the chefs participate in the chef ’s standup every morning. We meet at the administration building to go over forecasts, set the new goals of the day, and review safety protocols and opportunities for improvement. We then relay the discussions of the meetings to our staff in our respective outlets.

Miss Tilly’s Lollipops opens at 11:00 a.m. on the dot; that is something that is very important to me. By then, I’ve typically had three cups of coffee.

Early in the morning, I start with a black coffee with a little bit of sugar, but as the day goes by, my coffee gets more “extra.”

I am on the computer quite a bit, particularly with the upcoming pastry shop in The Equestrian Hotel, Emma’s Patisserie. I do try my best to stay in the kitchen as much as possible and be with the team. Finding a balance between kitchen and office is still something I am trying to improve on daily. It is important to me that every single item coming out of Miss Tilly’s Lollipops is well done and up to the company’s standards, as I am responsible for all of the desserts served at World Equestrian Center – Ocala.

Once completed, Emma’s Patisserie’s kitchen will be the one used to bake all of World Equestrian Center – Ocala’s desserts. When I move into The Equestrian Hotel with the team, I will transfer 70% of the production from Miss Tilly’s Lollipops to there, and Miss Tilly’s team will take care of their own production.

12:00 p.m.

I go to lunch around noon. I usually go to Filo’s Mexican Cantina or Viola & Dot’s Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria. I understand the balance between working out and eating healthy, so I am trying my best to follow a healthy diet, even though I sometimes get the Nashville hot chicken and loaded fries at Ralph’s Burger & Sandwich Shop, which is one of my favorites.

12:20 p.m.

I love my dog, Red; he is everything to me. He’s also French! My mom and dad gifted him to me and brought him to the U.S. from France. I am also very close to my parents, I FaceTime my mom at least twice a day. The time difference between France and the U.S. is about 6 hours forward. I haven’t seen my family in about 18 months and I am really excited about the day they get to visit World Equestrian Center and Ocala. We have visited a few cities like Chicago, Washington D.C. and New York City together and I hope that one day they can come live closer.

Once I am back in the kitchen, the afternoon goes very quickly. I am reviewing orders and updating the daily/ weekly production list for the team and making sure the operation runs as smoothly as possible. Chef Alberto and Chef Kari are amazing supports in that aspect; they help me a lot and I could not be where I am today without them.

1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

I try to divide my time between the planning of Emma’s Patisserie and supporting the team at Miss Tilly’s Lollipops. I realize how important time management is and I do my best to be successful at it. I also walk into some of the outlets at World Equestrian Center – Ocala a couple times per month and ask the front of house staff a few questions

about a dessert that the outlet serves. I want to be sure that they understand what they serve. As World Equestrian Center – Ocala grows, more staff is coming in, and my job is to make sure they get the right information about the desserts and ensure that the guests are getting the best experience possible.

5:30 p.m.

Once the daily production list is done or almost done, I leave my staff to finish up the day and I head home. If anything happens, I am always in contact with them and I answer any questions they may have. The last person to leave the kitchen leaves at 6:30 p.m. I either go home or I go pick up Red from day care.

6:30 p.m.

Once I get home, I take Red outside again and hang out and play with him. I eat dinner, then relax, have a glass of wine and watch Netflix. I also like to draw in my free time, it really frees my mind. If I don’t cook, I like to go get dinner at the Mexican restaurant or the sushi steakhouse by my place.

10:00 p.m.

Once I’ve watched my show and I have taken Red out one last time, I watch a few random videos on YouTube and go to bed.

I

think I was about 3 or 4 years old when I first decided that I wanted to be a baker. I was in preschool at the time and the school constantly brought us to visit places outside of the classroom. They took us to the little bakery in my hometown of Le Guilvinec, France, and I remember going into the kitchen in the back of the bakery. It felt like a sacred place to me with all of the fresh breads, the pastries and the incredible smells. I recall deciding in that moment that I was going to be a baker when I grew up. I stuck with that idea for about five years until the bakery turned into a pastry shop.

I saw all of the new desserts that were being made and concluded that I would be a pastry-chef. After that, I was always buying books and baking in the kitchen with my mom. I started with classical French dishes like Eclairs and Paris-Brest.

When I was 14 years old, I started my first internship through school and that solidified that I truly wanted to be a pastry chef. In France, we have apprenticeships, so at 15 years old, I started the program where you are at work three weeks and go to school one week. I did this for three years and got the bakery and pastry chef bachelor’s degree.

I graduated at 18 years old and transferred to the BTM (Brevet Technique des Métiers), one of the highest French degrees, and that taught me petit gateaux making, sugar and chocolate show pieces, ice cream, candies and pastries. We studied the chemistry behind baking and the “why things happen” aspect always fascinated me.

It also taught me how to be a manager. About 60% of the degree teaches you marketing, accounting and communication. I graduated with this degree at 20 years old.

I could have gone higher, but I felt a little stuck in France. I started to feel the need to travel and gain new experiences.

I decided to apply for positions in Dubai, Singapore and Boston, but none of those were very appealing to me until a Miami offer showed up on Facebook. A week later, I was in Miami and I started as a sous-chef.

I found the job with one of my best friends, Marion Phelep. We took a chance and did a three-month trial. The culture shock was apparent, but the experience was amazing. I felt deep in my heart that I belonged in the U.S.; it was the country and the environment that I wanted to be in.

I went back to France, signed my work visa at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, flew back, and started working as a pastry sous-chef in Miami full-time at Le Macaron. Marion stayed in France and opened her own pastry shop.

I learned a lot from that position. Adapting to a new culture and learning new languages was very challenging. Having my family and friends far away from me was also very new to me. I had to start from scratch.

However, after a year and a half, I was promoted to Executive Pastry Chef. I was only 22 at the time and was managing the entire pastry

thing to make?

I love making petit gateaux and entremets. Those are the shiny, small desserts with many colors and different shapes. I love playing with flavors and shapes. The funny thing is that I don’t enjoy eating desserts a lot, I just love to make them! The technicality behind them always challenges me and that is why I love it so much.

department. The kitchen staff only spoke Spanish, so I had to pick up Spanish on top of the new responsibilities.

I am now fluent in French, English and Spanish. I stayed at Le Macaron for three more years after being promoted.

I knew very quickly that the visa situation would be a game changer for me, so I decided to sponsor myself for the Exceptional Abilities Green Card. That took me about two years of work and processes before I was approved and I received it in February 2020. That still feels like my biggest accomplishment to this date.

I am eternally grateful to have been accepted by this amazing country that I now call home.

I wasn’t really looking to leave my position at Le Macaron, but I was not doing anything new there due to COVID’s impact on South Florida.

I remember receiving a message on LinkedIn that mentioned an amazing opportunity at World Equestrian Center – Ocala. To be honest, I did not even know where Ocala was on a map; come to find out, it was only four hours away from Miami. I sent over my resume and did not think it would go any further. Next thing I knew, I received a call asking me to come to Ocala to do a tasting.

I did a lot of research about World Equestrian Center, then did my tasting in April 2020 at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club because World Equestrian Center — Ocala was not open yet. I arrived at Golden Ocala with a backpack full of chocolate, almond flour, whisks and knives. Pastry chefs are very picky about what we use, so we usually bring our own equipment and ingredients to our tastings. I thought I should do something horse related, so I made a horseshoe-shaped dessert to present to

Mrs. Mary Roberts, among other desserts. I believe that the horseshoe-shaped dessert was the one that she enjoyed the most.

On June 1, 2020, I moved to Ocala. I worked for Golden Ocala while planning World Equestrian Center – Ocala’s opening and the opening of Miss Tilly’s Lollipops. I have worked in Miss Tilly’s Lollipops since the opening, but my destination has always been Emma’s Patisserie in The Equestrian Hotel.

Emma’s Patisserie, named after Mrs. Mary Robert’s grandmother, is the French bakery in The Equestrian Hotel. It is French-inspired, and the Executive Interior Designer, Ric Owens, was able to capture the exact atmosphere of a French pastry shop and recreate that. I cannot get over the green pistachio and the gold of the millwork, Ric really goes into the details and makes it feel like home. Emma’s Patisserie will have a display of fresh croissants and pastries, assortments of petit gateaux, macarons and other treats like chocolates and bonbons. Mrs. Roberts also mentioned cupcakes and treat parties around Emma’s, which I am very excited about.

Mrs. Roberts gave me the opportunity to design the kitchen for Emma’s Patisserie, which has been a unique and amazing experience. She believes in me in a way no one ever did, and as a young chef, it is the most priceless and meaningful feeling I have experienced. It is an honor to work for Mrs. Roberts, who helps me grow as a chef but also as a person. She is a role model and inspires me to be better every day, just like she does.

This is my first time being a part of an opening team and I am lucky that we are taking it step by step. I really enjoy my position because of the variety of offerings throughout both the Golden Ocala and World Equestrian Center – Ocala properties; Golden Ocala is more classic desserts while Miss Tilly’s Lollipops and the restaurants on-site allow me to be very creative. Emma’s Patisserie will definitely be the greatest challenge, but I get to keep developing my skills, and that keeps me motivated.

Junior Rider Focus: Alivia Kohus

How did you get into riding?

AK

When I was three years old, my mom took me to the Kentucky Horse Park to ride one of their ponies. After that day, I would not stop asking my parents for lessons. Later that year, I started taking lessons and attended my first lead line and ground poles show and it’s just been a nonstop adventure ever since!

Tell us about some of the ponies/horses you’ve had that have had a big impact on your riding career.

AK

I would say each of my horses have made me a better rider and prepared me for future opportunities. My first pony, Cezanne, taught me the ropes of riding and provided me a solid foundation that I could build on throughout the years. My second pony, Macgyver, provided me the pony rider experience of a lifetime, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to have had a pony like him. All the mischievous things he did taught me how to stay in the saddle, which may not have been appreciated at the time, but definitely is now. My third pony, Paisley, was from the Pony Finals Auction. While she was very sweet, she was also a handful.

She not only taught me patience with horses, but with people too. Last, but certainly not least, my current horse, Carl, has truly shaped me into who I am today as a rider and person.

we’ve had some growing to do these last four and a half years. We are able to go from equitation, to jumpers, to hunters every single show, and he’s always ready to face anything thrown his way. Every time I walk into the barn, he greets me with a nicker and I give him his favorite snack, a banana.

What do you currently show in?

For the past few years, I’ve been showing in the 3’6 medals such as the ASPCA Maclay, the Dover/Pessoa, and the WIHS, the 3’3 medals such as the NHS, NCEA, and the USHJA Jumpseat, hunter classes such as the 3’6 Performance and the 3’6 Large Juniors, and hunter derbies.

What are some of your riding accomplishments?

While I have not had the opportunities to show at some of the biggest shows, I am fortunate to have qualified for some of the bigger medals and compete at a few of the finals. Some accomplishments I am most proud of are: 17th at Pony Finals 2015; 6th place at 2018 NHS 3’3 Medal Finals; 2018 USHJA Horse of the Year 14 & under; 4th Place NCEA Medal Finals 2018; and Winner of the Zone 5 USHJA Horsemanship Challenge 2019.

I have had to pick and choose which finals to compete in sometimes, because of the expense of it all. I am lucky enough to have the Kentucky Horse Park in my backyard, as well as World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Ohio. Being close to such venues has allowed me to do more from a budget perspective. 2020 has been challenging for all to say the least, but I am proud to say Carl and I did some of our first

How do you balance school and riding?

At school, I am lucky to have a study hall where I can get some of my work done for my classes. After school, I drive an hour to my barn, Olive Hill Sporthorses, in Lexington and take a lesson. When I get home, I work out with my dad and then do homework the rest of the night. I try to complete all of my work that I know I have the rest of the week, so I can have more time after school to spend at the barn.

On Saturdays and Sundays, I go down to the barn and my trainer, Diana Conlon, is kind enough to give me a couple of extra horses to ride both days.

What are your hobbies outside of riding?

Outside of riding, I enjoy drawing, painting, and ice skating.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is Me Before You.

Who are some people that have helped or influenced you?

My very first trainer, Trish Sanders, believed I could do anything I put my mind to which I will be forever grateful. It has given me courage to continue when times get difficult.

Maria Kniepp made me an effective and tough rider from the age of 8. Diana Conlon is the epitome of a true horsewoman. I strive to follow her example because I have never seen her lose her temper with a horse and she is always firm, but understanding, with them. In 2019, I attended the Emerging Athletes Program with Julie Winkel as the clinician. She is extremely knowledgeable and a phenomenal teacher who truly wants the rider to understand the horse.

My parents and grandparents are my all-time biggest supporters.

Without them, I would never have been able to be an equestrian.

I made the decision to skip the 8th grade and I will graduate this year and still only be 16!

I’ve had the same pair of riding pants for almost six years and none of the stitching has come out and no holes!

t the World Equestrian Center Dressage VIII show on February 2224, a familiar face was seen, not only teaching students from the ground, but in the show ring performing a Grand Prix test. Anne Gribbons, one of the most accomplished figures in the sport of dressage in the United States, rode Let’s Dance, her 14-year-old Brandenburger gelding (Laurentio x Grandseigneur), to a score of 67.174% in the FEI Grand Prix Open division for the win.

Gribbons, who runs Knoll Dressage with her husband David in Orlando, Florida, has brought almost 20 horses to the grand prix level as a rider and another 20 as a trainer. She is an FEI 5* judge and was the U.S. Equestrian Technical Advisor and coach for dressage.

training to the grand prix level. In 2017, an injury forced Let’s Dance into a year-long break where Gribbons could not ride him. During that year, Gribbons said her high-spirited, personable horse was miserable and hated being confined to a stall for his safety.

At 74 years old, she remains active in the sport by riding every day, teaching students, giving clinics and judging.

“When we had totally lost heart, I just said, ‘We can’t have this lifestyle for a horse that loves to live outside,’” recalled Gribbons. “He hadn’t even trotted in hand, but we turned him out.

He galloped for an hour and the next day I was expecting disaster. But he came out of his stall and wasn’t swollen.”

A conformation issue with his foot likely led to a problem higher up in his leg and his unidentifiable lameness. But with the help of her farrier and vets, Gribbons was eventually able to ride him again. It took another year of solid work before he was back in grand prix shape. With the pandemic in 2020, plans were again put on hold, but Gribbons felt lucky to be in the show ring again.

She expressed, “I feel totally blessed every day I sit on him. It’s like a gift I never expected. I feel delighted at this point in his life and in mine, [that] we can go out and just enjoy being out there. He loves being the center of attention. It’s been a long haul, and I really feel so lucky that he is now up and running. Every time I go somewhere to show, I remember how it could have ended.”

Let’s Dance is the only horse Gribbons plans to compete.

“The spirit of him is wonderful,” she said.

“I want to keep going as long as possible.

All horses are precious and wonderful, but this one I really love, and he pulls on my heartstrings.”

In New Jersey, roots run deep and spirits bloom bright at Gleneayre Farm, where retired show horses, working students and equine-facilitated learning and mental health community programs are woven together to grow better lives.

Like a “Brigadoon,” owners Robert and Ellen Healey have dedicated three decades to resurrecting an 18th century site originally known as Eayres Mill, the region’s first industry, and the Quaker settlement of “Eayrestown,” whose namesakes, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, numbered among the most successful families and businesses in Lumberton Township.

Today, Gleneayre Farm stands in tribute to that history while milling hope from healing programs for young people and older horses.

“When my husband and I purchased Gleneayre in 1983, we hoped to show our children farm life, particularly horses. This property was well-suited for that and had been a farm since the Eayres family settled here, through a land grant from the King of England, in 1704,” says Ellen Healey, founder of Gleneayre Equestrian Program (GEP).

“I’ve always had a love for horses and wished that I had been able to ride as a child. Of our seven children, five ‘dabbled’ in horses. Our youngest daughters, Alexis and Leigh, started as 4-H riders and progressed to the top levels. From horses, they learned responsibility and discipline, and when they progressed to riding the circuit, we made it clear they maintain their academics and attend college.”

“We were honored to induct Lucky Strike in 2020,” says Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President.

“He is a wonderful example of the many horses who contribute to the wellbeing of people after their sport careers are over and who have an inspirational impact on the public.”

Applause has since passed, but according to Alison, “He lives on in every program horse that finds solace in healing others. GEP horses like Applause and Lucky Strike change lives. They give people hope and the capacity to learn about themselves.

Horses, as usual, proved a mirror to human emotion. In Applause, Kevin found himself. “They both began a new journey. Kevin found a love for horses he never knew he had,” Alison said, adding how the young man chose to continue working with horses after finishing the program.

He could find that person in a group, almost sniff them out, and offer them a chance to realize things about themselves they never knew possible.”

Deepening Roots “GEP takes me back to the grassroots of our sport,” says Bill Rube, GEP Executive Director since October 2019.

“Simply put, Gleneayre Equestrian Program feels right. When I started riding years ago, there was a ‘pipeline,’ that allowed you to learn and compete through the levels. I thought this had become a thing of the past until I started here.

“I think the program is so successful here because everyone at GEP is on the same page. I may be up in years, but I’m still just a kid at heart,” he adds with a grin. “Interacting with working students is not only enlightening, but fun. I can relate to the ups and downs, the challenges and the sheer joy of interacting with horses.”

Bill is adamant that, if you love your horses, then GEP is “a great place for them to go when they are ready to gear down. I believe that horses are very smart and they know when they are making an impact.”

A Leap of Faith: The Chapel at the World Equestrian Center - Ocala

For property designer Ric Owens, the Chapel is undoubtedly his most beloved part of the property.

“On a spiritual level, the Chapel is my favorite thing I have designed at World Equestrian Center – Ocala,” he said. The stained-glass windows were hand-selected by Owens along with Mary Roberts, and the interior is complete with stunning chandeliers and custom-made pews from Vietnam.

The exterior is classic and unassuming, with soft gray stonework and white trim; the simple structure allows for the experience inside to be the true takeaway.

At the center of the Chapel’s design is the 100-yearold antique bell, embellished with lush gardens and capturing the essence of the spiritual escape.

“The Chapel is beautiful on multiple levels. It holds a quiet calm and offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the event venue,” said Owens. “It has a non-denominational feel and provides a place where everyone can be at peace and share what

Last year, the Ohio facility gave away 20,000 crosses and more than 100,000 of the keepsakes were ordered ahead of the opening of World Equestrian Center – Ocala.

Leading the church services on Sunday and working as a full-time minister for World Equestrian Center in Ohio, Chaplain Larry Speelman has become a very familiar face to many across both World Equestrian Center properties.

A native of Wilmington, Ohio, Speelman grew up on a farm with cattle and horses, though World Equestrian Center was his first exposure with show horses and the hunter/jumper world. “I try to tie the scriptures we study together with some aspect of horse show life,” he said. “I believe that’s a gift that God has given me in this situation as I try to connect the Bible with applicable situations in the horse world.”

Tell us a bit about your family and horses.

Meg

Jada was born into an equestrian family. She is the fourth generation to ride and work in the horse industry. The love of horses runs deep in the Howard family. We are based at Fox Meadow Farm in Temperance, Michigan.

Are there life lessons you learned that you share with your child, or know that they would learn them the same way you did, through horses?

Meg

So many life lessons were taught to me through horses, and I have shared them with Jada. She has also learned some from her own experiences. From loving these ponies and horses, to building a partnership, to learning responsibility, to taking care of an animal and all of the equipment, it has taught me so much. The confidence Jada has acquired by riding these large animals can really help to carry her through life, no matter which direction she chooses.

with many clients. I wanted Jada to experience all aspects of being in the horse business, from loving the horse, riding the horse, competing with the horse, to having fun with family and friends while working hard preparing for horse shows.

What is your role in Jada’s riding career?

I am Jada’s coach, mentor and support. Jada and mom work pretty well together. We have bumped into mother/daughter disputes but that’s where Jada’s Aunt Polly (Howard) is there to take over. Jada, for the most part, is good with her mother being her coach.

What does the future hold?

Meg

Jada and I have talked about her joining the business after college. We will see where life takes her over the next four years. I really love and cherish the time spent with my daughter and these incredible animals. Family, friends and fun!

Can you share some of the reasons you wanted Jada to ride?

Meg

I loved growing up with our family riding and showing horses together. My mother, Judy Howard, had a show business. She trained three daughters, Polly Howard, Beth Howard Pfeiffer and myself, along

Strider, a company that is proud of creating a community of riders, organizers and opportunities, launched its e-commerce, mobile-friendly booking platform in 2016 to help equestrians take advantage of a wide range of horse shows, clinics, and professional development opportunities. “Our goal was to give riders direct access to top venues and professionals through a one-stop digital hub.

Effectively, break down barriers for access and participation in equestrian sport,” shared Tara.

For riders, Strider is a place to find and connect with educational, professional and competitive ventures and enter without having to email an organizer, set foot in a show office or sign any physical papers.

For organizers, Strider is a place to ensure greater visibility for their events and increase entries as well as improve organization and data collection.

From a marketing perspective, Strider is unique in the horse industry because the platform is completely SEO optimized. That means even

It’s just one more way to capitalize on organic connections. As a result, more than 1,200 facilities and industry leaders across all disciplines are using the platform to reach equestrian enthusiasts.

During COVID an array of creative opportunities has been posted on Strider. Options included everything from Practical Horseman magazine holding virtual horse shows to local barns hosting professional development webinars on Zoom.

In preparation for the return to traditional activities, Strider worked with USEF last fall to sync member data across all of USEF associations into Strider’s FastEntry service. “We know the industry will want touchless transactions and real-time data access moving forward. For our members, auto-populating entries with the most up-to-date rider and horse details, plus SafeSport info, is a clear win for all. It shortcuts the ‘yes, sign me up for that amazing opportunity ’ action down from hours to mere seconds.”

- Waiving the Stress of Collecting Signatures on Paper Given the mobile nature of the equestrian sport – we are always on the move, whether it be astride a horse or behind the wheel, Strider developed the eWaiver subscription service to eliminate the stress and inconvenience of signing hard copy waivers.

This innovative system works via rider cell phones to collect legally binding, touchless signatures. Everything from barn liability to horse show waivers, or enabling contactless show check-in, can be completed without the need to ever stand in line at a physical show office.

- Connecting Organizers with Top Talent Think LinkedIn™ for the horse world – StriderMatch, launched in December 2020’ is an innovative tool that helps connect event organizers with top international riders as a onestop-shop resource for recruiting talent to have at clinics or webinars.

“By creating a single source of professional availability and matching that with event needs, it’s a value-add for both parties,” explained Tara. This tool takes the power of connections to a new level and taps into the Strider user network of 60+ Olympic riders and World Champions across eight countries.

Liz Halliday-Sharp, named USEA’s Rider of the Year for 2020 and the first woman to be honored as such in nearly four decades, was among the first riders to enroll in StriderMatch, along with fellow international event rider Lainey Ashker. They are among the many other elite athletes that have clinic or masterclass entries available on Strider, including Boyd Martin, Kasey Perry-Glass, Laura Graves, and Anne Kursinski.

The story behind our brand dates back to our childhood and our mother, Ines Rönner, who has always been very passionate about horses. We grew up seeing her in her riding outfits, always looking elegant, sporty and sophisticated. She was a dressage rider, so we have a special inclination to the classic dressage horse, but there are absolutely no rules and limits when it comes to looking for inspirations.

We are equally inspired by the nobility of Arabian horses, the strength and grandeur of polo scenes, or the simplicity and purity of horses in a field. We truly love all aspects of this lifestyle and passion.

TELL US ABOUT THE COLOR PALETTE. Everyone who loves Rönner knows we are passionate about blue. It is a constant in our collections and prints, since we are endlessly inspired by all things blue and white. You will also find feminine color pallets and unique color combinations throughout our collections. We love to keep it classic and experiment by adding new and fresh hues in every collection.

In 2014 during one of my many trips to Colombia, I had the opportunity to visit Rönner. I was delighted with the brand, and I purchased a few pieces. I was so in love with the line that I asked the employee working in the store to call one of the owners right at that moment. I was able to speak with Carin Rönner and share my idea of bringing Rönner to the United States. She was thrilled about the idea, so I worked with Jessica, who has become my goto person, to launch Rönner in the United States. I started doing private trunk shows, and I was able to finally have my first pop-up shop in 2017. It has grown from there, and I have done pop-up shops across the country. I now have a pop-up shop at World Equestrian Center — Ocala. I am excited to introduce the Ocala market to Rönner.

I still wear my first few pieces from Rönner that I purchased in Columbia in 2014. They are just like new. I have quite the collection of Rönner tops and boots. I also have an amazing suede leather poncho, which is one of my favorite pieces to this day. I have to admit, since my first pair of boots, I have not stopped wearing Rönner’s entire shoe collection. They are constructed with comfortable handmade leather and are truly classy and timeless pieces. Rönner has become one of my favorite lines to wear. It’s almost like an addiction – I have to have it all!

TELL US ABOUT THE NEW ECO FABRICS. Four million plastic bottles contaminate Colombia's oceans, beaches and rivers every year and only 1 million are recycled. We feel responsible for doing our part to make the world a better place for future generations. Our Eco Fabrics are made of recycled bottles collected from the ocean. It is a clean process where different qualities and textures are created.

We also direct a lot of attention to our printing process and have chosen to work mostly with sublimation printing in order to eliminate water waste and contamination. It is a 100% clean process and even the paper that is left is recycled and reused for other purposes.
