Reason for Garment Care Breathable waterproof garments are most likely to get sweaty and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can be lose up to 70% of its breathability.

Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of your jacket must be maintained to ensure comfort.

CLEAN FIRST! Your waterproof clothing and equipment could be soaking up water because the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) has been compromised by dirt, or because it has been cleaned with a conventional laundry detergent.

Dirt attracts water and household detergents leave watere attracting (hydrophilic) residues, leading to fabric ‘wetting out’ in wet or damp conditions.

NIKWAX TECH WASH® will not only remove contaminants, such as dirt and residues left behind by household detergents, but also revitalise DWR. Dirty jackets are wet jackets.

RE-WATERPROOF! The waterproof fabric must allow moisture vapour to pass through it, or ‘breathe’, otherwise our swet cannot evaporate, causing us to overheat and get wet from condensation. Additionally, if the outer fabric of your garment absorbs water and ‘wets out’ its breathability will be reduced, causing you to feel clammy and wet.

NIKWAX TX.DIRECT® will adds a flexible water repellent treatment on individual fibres allowing moisture vapour to pass through, maintaining breathablity and help you get the best of your gear.

Wet jackets are not breathable jackets.

Reason for Footwear Care If the outer fabric or leather of footwear absorbs water, the breathablity of the footwear will be reduced.

Breathable waterproof footwear is most likely to get sweaty and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) of your footwear must be maintained to ensure comfort.

CLEAN FIRST! Through use, the outer surface of footwear will pick up contaminants, such as dirt, which attract water. This masks the effect of any Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating, leading to footwear ‘wetting out’ in wet or damp conditions. Regular cleaning with NIKWAX FOOTWEAR CLEANING GEL™ will enhance the performance of your footwear by removing water attracting (hydrophilic) dirt and other contaminants as well as revitalise DWR of your footwear revitalise DWR, causing water to bead on the outer surface once more.

RE-WATERPROOF! When you’re active and wearing footwear, your socks draw moisture away from your fee, keeping them dry. However, if your footwear absorbs water and ‘wets out’ its breathability will be reduced. Moisture vapour will not be able to escape through the material, so your feet will feel clammy and wet. NIKWAX FABRIC & LEATHER PROOF™ will adds water repellency and maintains breathablity. When brethablity gets reduced, your footwear will get wet not only from the rain but also from your sweat trapped inside of shoes. This is why the breathablity of footwear is so important and this is why you pay a good value of the breathable footwear.

Reason for Down Care Down filled items are used to provide lightweight insulation to keep you warm. The structure of down allows air to be trapped between its filaments and warmed by body heat to provide insulation for the user. However, when wet, down loses all of its insulating properties, as water conducts heat away from the body up to 25 times faster than air. It will also gain weight and its breathablity will be significantly reduced leaving you feeling cold, wet and uncomfortable.

CLEAN REGULARLY! If Down gets wet, it clumps together, loses loft and insulation as it can’t trap air effectively. Therefore it is important to stop down filled gear from getting wet by applying Durable Water Repellency (DWR).

The outer fabric of your down filled item, as well as the down inside, must be maintained to ensure comfort. Water, whether it is rain or condensation from sweat, compromises the insulating properties of down. If down gets wet it loses all of its insulating capacity and also causes weight gain. This reduces the comfort of the user, causing them to feel cold and wet, but more importantly the reduction in insulation is dangerous.

NIKWAX DOWN WASH DIRECT ® revitalises insulation and restores DWR of both the outer fabric and down fill. This prevents water absorption and maintains breathability, keeping you warm, dry and comfortable.

Cleaning your down item before or end of season will make you get the best of your down gear.

Reason for Baselayer Care Base layers are designed to be worn next to the skin, providing user comfort by maintaining body temperature and controlling moisture. The fabrics used are highly wicking (they will spread moisture out over a large area), fast drying and breathable. It is therefore essential to maintain these properties when caring for base layers.

CLEAN CORRECTLY! Base layers are fantastic for regulating your temperature and controlling body moisture, but over time a build up of bacteria and body oils can lead to them smelling. To keep base layer functioning properly, care must be taken when washing.

Using conventional household detergents or fabric conditioners can impair wicking properties by causing the fabric to retain moisture. This leads to reduced wicking capabilities and slow drying of the fabric.

Additionally, ordours will not be adequately removed, instead they are masked by perfumes which will fail quickly, leaving you with smelly base layers.

NIKWAX BASE FRESH® has been specifically formulated for use when cleaning and conditioning all base layer and it outperforms conventional household detergents and fabric conditioners at improving wicking, accelerating drying and removing and preventing odour build up. NIKWAX BASE FRESH® used instead of a fabric conditioner allows the use of a conventional household detergent for cleaning, without compromising base layer functionality. If your base layers don’t get maintained correctly, they are not that different from normal t-shirts!

Reason for Equipment Care Synthetic fabrics used for tents and rucksacks are coated with a water repellent treatment. Exposure to ultraviolet(UV) light both destroys the water repellency and leads to a reduction in fabric tear strength, significantly shortening the lifespan of equipment. The application of Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof ® can double the effective life of equipment by protecting against UV damage, while also providing Durable Water Repellency(DWR) to keep the rain out.

PROTECT YOUR EQUIPMENT! Tents and rucksacks use synthetic fabrics, such as nylon or polyester, with a thin watertight polyurethane (PU) or elastomeric coating on the inside and a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on the outside. This combination gives great strength and water resistance, combined with light weight; ideal attributes for outdoor equipment.

Unfortunately these fabrics are vulnerable to sunlight and in two weeks of continuous exposure, can lose up to half of their strength. Additionally, the inner coating will degrade if it is left damp for long periods.

NIKWAX Tent & Gear Solar Proof ® has been specifically formulated for synthetic outdoor equipment to provide Durable Water Repellency (DWR) to the maximum testable standard and ultraviolet (UV) protection to inhibit the reduction of fabric tear strength caused by UV rays.
