THE CITY OF CHICHESTER

One of the great well-preserved Georgian cities in the UK, Chichester has played a key role of the affairs of Sussex since at least Roman times. Today, with a population of approximately 28,000, Chichester is the prosperous administrative capital of West Sussex and a great place for shopping, but it’s hard to avoid Chichester's links to its illustrious past. The Sunday Times voted Chichester as one of the best Cathedral cities to live, not only because of it’s wealth of healthy outdoor activities, it’s major cultural offerings but because of it’s attractive city centre retail offerings.

There are plenty of good reasons to visit Chichester. Chichester city centre broad streets are packed with listed buildings, with the list headed by the towering presence of Chichester Cathedral, now home to a family of peregrine falcons who can be heard as they swoop over the city at dusk.

The pedestrianised city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient city walls and this helps to make Chichester compact and pleasant to explore on foot. There are plenty of good shops in Chichester and the city serves as the main shopping centre for a huge hinterland which stretches across the South of England.

Chichester was named the fourth most resilient UK high street centre in a league table according to research from Cushman & Wakefield in 2018, just behind Cambridge, Guilford and Bath. The City Centre also has the major players like: M&S, Waterstones, H&M, Top-Shop, New Look, White Company, Space.NK, Jack Wills and Jigsaw plus many many more. Chichesters population is fairly evenly split between young, working age and older people. For broad age categories Chichester falls very much in the centre of the age breakdown measures for the Sussex county. Chichester is renowned as a prosperous area with substantial ABC1 population stats recorded within the city itself, but also in the rural areas within a ten to fifteen mile radius of the city centre.
