or 100 years now, every summer, the people of Gillette have had a special rendezvous: New Farrm Exchange of Gillette. A place where the finest local artisans, bakers, meat producers, and growers converge to showcase the fruits of their labor. Joanne Engelhaupt and the Board Directors are the force behind New Farrm Exchange.

New Farrm Exchange isn’t just another farmers market in Gillette, Wyoming, it’s a tradition. For over two decades, Joanne has been at the heart of this, but the legacy extends back a century. “A summer farmers market has been happening in Gillette for 100 years this year,” she reminisces.

n January 2, 2023, during a NFL Monday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, with over 65,000 fans in attendance, and over 23 million more watching on television, Bills Safety, Damar Hamlin, collapsed after having made a tackle on what looked to be a harmless routine play.

Lying motionless on the Paycor Stadium turf, team trainers and paramedics rushed to Hamlin’s aid.

The First Responders had reached Hamlin about ten seconds after he collapsed and over the next few minutes, CPR was initiated. An automated external defibrillation unit was used over the next ten minutes. After being placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance, he was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. In the early hours of January 3rd, the Bills reported that Hamlin had suffered a cardiac arrest. With the first aid action taken by the training staff and paramedics, his heartbeat had been restored on the field.

During the third period of Game One of the North American 3 Hockey League Division Finals between the Gillette Wild and the visiting Helena Bighorns, Helena defenseman Dylan Cunningham became tangled with a teammate following a faceoff in the Bighorns defensive zone. It happened in the blink of an eye and the play looked like any other of the countless collisions that had happened on the ice throughout the night.

In the days, weeks, and months following the incident, focus was put on the First Responders and how their actions saved the life of an athlete on the field of play.

During an August 11, 2023 appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, NFL Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Allen Sills spoke about the impact the Hamlin incident had on the sports world.

“I think it is a really important opportunity for the whole sports community to think about this whole idea of emergency preparedness.” Sills said.

“How prepared are you for something to happen, because the story that night was not just that we got 30 medical professionals there and they’ve got a plan, and they’ve researched, and they’ve trained. That was incredibly important, and in that moment that saved the young man’s life, which is an incredible story. But what I want people to think about is what if that happens in my league, what if that happens in my field, and that’s not something that is just about football, and it’s not just about the NFL.” Dr. Sills continued to hammer home the following point, “There was a great outcome that night because there were dedicated professionals, who had a plan, and who had trained, and who had

On March 15, 2023, a group of Northeast Wyoming sports fans witnessed firsthand the importance of a training staff having a well-made emergency response plan.

Christian Galindo was serving as the athletic trainer for both squads that night and witnessed Cunningham having his lower arm sliced open by his teammates skate during the collision. His training and instincts immediately took over. Galindo reached Cunningham and started administering first aid less than ten seconds after the cut had happened. The pair then headed off the ice to the locker room less than thirty seconds after the incident.

“When I saw the kid went down, I saw the kid get stepped on, thankfully, and I saw that he was leaking and it was bad.” Galindo said. “Honestly whenever something like that happens your training takes over. In that instance, I recognized that this was going to be a major issue.”

Galindo has been a part of the Gillette Physical Therapy team that provides athletic training and first aid response for many different sports organizations across the Gillette area. He also serves to offer advice to said sports organizations on ways to be better prepared in the chance of an incident occurring. The Damar Hamlin event shed light on the importance of more AED’s being readily available for first responders. Galindo mentioned that a lot of the folks running these athletic programs around Gillette are doing a good job providing more access to the devices. The Gillette Riders have added an AED to their first aid kit. In addition, Gillette College has worked to identify some sites that the devices weren’t reasonably close to access in case of emergency. They’re working to get them added in those locations.

“As far as emergency prep and response, unfortunately, a lot of times for awareness to be brought on, there must be something tragic that occurs,” Galindo said. “It is sad to say, but sometimes places just won’t be ready to make a plan until after there has been a catastrophic injury.”

There is also a need for everyone to be trained in first aid and emergency response.

“Unfortunately, an incident is going to happen somewhere you least expect it,” Galindo said.

“I cannot point to when you least expect it enough, because that is when something can happen and in the case of a sudden cardiac arrest, the key word is ‘sudden.’ You just need to know how to respond and that goes along with knowing basic first aid, and being able to perform it until you can pass things off to a trained medical professional.”

“Getting trained in first aid and how to use an AED is so easily accessible. Everyone should have a basic understanding of how to operate these things,” Galindo added.

The fun continues to disappear from youth sports and parents have no one to blame but themselves.

There is nothing wrong with having aspirations for our young athletes and desiring them to find success in their fields of competition. However, letting those hopes and dreams bleed over into the area of causing issues at the actual sporting events themselves is taking things too far.

In late 2022, the folks at Wyoming Public Media posted a story about the issues fa c i n g t h e yo u t h sports programs i n o u r sta te.

Wyoming was seeing the same problems being faced across the country with the referee s h o r ta g e, and adults sideline

behavior at youth sporting events was just taking the fun out of the games.

Dating back to 2019, Rick Roddam published a story on kingfm.com detailing how Wyoming High School Activities Association Commissioner, Ron Laird, had distributed an editorial piece.

“If you are the mother or father of a high school athlete here in Wyoming, this message is primarily for you,’ Laird wrote in the Op-Ed, which was co-authored

by National Federation of State High School Associations Executive Director Karissa Niehoff.

“When it comes to verbally criticizing game officials or coaches, cool it.”

“Yelling, screaming, and berating the officials humiliates your child, annoys those sitting around you, embarrasses your child’s school, and is the primary reason Wyoming has an alarming shortage of high school officials,” Laird went on.

The Emotional Crossroads of a Young Gil ette Athlete P

atrick Lynch knew what he wanted to do, knew what he needed to do, and had finally worked up the courage to do it, so he did. He picked up his phone and made the call.

It had been three weeks since the Campbell County High School Junior had committed to furthering a promising hockey career playing for the Gillette Wild. The Wild are members of the North American 3 Hockey League, a Tier III junior hockey league with teams from 17 different states stretching from Connecticut to Wyoming.

Lynch had been featured in the Gillette News Record with a story delivering news that one of the top youth hockey players in the state was making the decision to remain a local, while furthering his hockey career. Since Wild Head Coach and General Manager Ethan Hayes took over in 2020, Gillette has built themselves into one of the top junior hockey programs in the country.

Walking off the Campbell County High School football field last month having just made school history being a part of the first Camel squad to beat Thunder Basin High School on the gridiron, Lynch recalled the call he made.

I understood that my friends are important to me and I only get to do high school once. I stil have five years to play junior hockey.

“I really didn’t know what I wanted,” Lynch said.

“There was a three week period where everyday I was doing my workout stuff for the Wild, and at night I would just go sit at Campbell County by myself. I realized if I played junior hockey this year, there’s no way I’m going back next year to high school at all because that wouldn’t be good for me and my hockey career.”

“I understood that my friends are important to me and I only get to do high school once. I still have five years to play junior hockey. Going to call Ethan, I really was worried about it, because we just got a newspaper article, all the hype was building up and then to not necessarily back out of it, but you know, to postpone. I just felt bad in a way. But when I called him to talk, he was really supportive about it,” Lynch said.

“Your high school years are some of the best years of your life and you don’t really know it until it’s over, “ Coach Hayes said. “I didn’t really want to rob him of that. If he still wanted to be there to play football and soccer, then that is what he needs to do. He is a team guy, and that is what we want over here. Guys that are supportive of the team no matter what, good or bad, negative or positive, you have the team’s back.” www.SportAndWellness.Fit | Issue 1 | Gillette, Wyoming December 2023

For the Campbell County football team there had been plenty of bad, and plenty of negative, especially when it came to facing the Bolts. In their six regular season meetings, Thunder Basin had won all six, and the games hadn’t even been close. The Bolts had only failed to reach the 50-point mark once, that being the inaugural contest back in 2017, where Thunder won 47-0. The most points the Camels had scored in a game was 24 last season, all coming in the first half, having built a 24-7 lead over Thunder Basin going into the break. Campbell County would give up 55 unanswered in the second half and be defeated 62-24.

“So we’ve got our ass kicked for like seven years now,” Lynch said. “Like last year, we should have won. You know, woulda-coulda-shoulda, going up in a half 24-3, and then just shit the bed. This year we were not going to let that happen.”

The sports programs at the two schools have been locked in spirited competition since they began going head-to-head back in 2017. Whenever you have two schools in such close proximity, there is naturally going to be a desire to out-compete the other. The schools have exchanged victories over one another in all sports over the years, except in football. The animosity has been evident at said events, but the outcome of a contest being unknown or undecided until the final play has been made is what delivers the best competitive environment for the athletes and the best viewing experience for the spectators. If you have had a chance to witness a softball game between the two schools, then you know this first hand.

It is undeniable in the American sports landscape of today that tackle football is king. At the high school, collegiate, and professional levels, sports fans want to be a part of an institution with a winning football tradition. With their 49-17 victory over Thunder Basin, the Campbell County football team has finally given their fans a reason for optimism and showed they want to be a part of the growing rivalry between the two schools.

From here on out, as far as two football programs are concerned - It is game on.
