The Beginning
The Energy Classic Basketball Tournament began in the late 1997 with the boys’ and girls’ 97/98 Campbell County High School basketball teams. The tournament was a way to bring more home games and elite competition to Gillette during a dominant era for Campbell County High School basketball. What started as an eight-team event quickly grew into one of the region’s premier high school tournaments, regularly featuring nationally ranked boys’ and girls’ teams from across the United States—and occasionally Canada— during the week between Christmas
At its peak, the Energy Classic attracted top programs and future stars, drawing large crowds and becoming a holiday tradition for families in Gillette and throughout Wyoming. The tournament’s success was the committee’s commitment to providing first-class hospitality, covering travel, lodging, and meals for participating teams, and creating a high-level basketball experience rarely seen in the region.
The tournament was last played in January 2020 after a hiatus due to COVID-19. With raising costs, aging committee members, retirement of school staff, and the significant time required to sustain the event, the hiatus turned into the end. After more than 25 years of dedication, the organizers chose to step away, bringing an end to a tournament that left a lasting legacy in the community and in high school basketball history.
But you can never keep a good thing down. New organizers with dedication and drive are working diligently at reviving the Energy Classic. This year on December 28th-30th the Energy Classic Basketball tournament will be back. Its return will mark the 26th Energy Classic.
