Meet the first cohort of dynamic students enrolled in NDSU Nursing at Sanford Health’s Accelerated BSN program. Since 2014, this Bismarck-based program has been a standard of excellence in nursing education. Under Charys Kunkel’s leadership, the program recently introduced an innovative accelerated pre-licensure BSN track. Launched in the fall of 2023, it addresses the critical need for skilled nurses in North Dakota and beyond.
The launch of an accelerated BSN Nursing program was fueled by a profound realization of the growing healthcare workforce shortage. With vacancy rates for healthcare workers in North Dakota ranging from 4.97% to 13.44% and the national need for over 200,000 nurses annually through 2026, the urgency to train competent and baccalaureate-prepared nurses became clear. This need prompted NDSU Nursing to champion the accelerated degree program, an innovative approach that builds on previous learning experiences to fast-track students into the nursing profession.
This program is unique in its accelerated BSN option, tailored for individuals with prior Baccalaureate or higher degrees. Students are able to complete their nursing education in approximately 14 months. It offers a blend of in-person and online classes, with hands-on lab and clinical experiences at the Bismarck location. This innovative approach not only meets the immediate need for nurses, but also provides a viable career change pathway for many.
NDSU Nursing at Sanford Health stands out for its commitment to addressing workforce needs, as well as its dedication to values that define its ethos. It all started when Michelle had her own brows done. She was working as a dental assistant over the previous 18 years and thought brows and skincare would be a perfect career transition, an impactful way to incorporate art with beauty, and the opportunity to make others feel better about their appearance. A passion was born that day, and she began the journey to become a permanent makeup artist. Today, she owns a studio in Bismarck and is opening her second location October 1st in Jamestown. Youth Soccer Program
Many are aware of Ricardo Pierre-Louis as a business teacher at Bismarck High School and founder of Lespwa Lavi; what many are unaware of is the story behind what shaped his career. Ricardo was born and raised in Haiti. At 12 years old, through an invitation from a friend, he began playing soccer to simply have the opportunity to eat a meal each day. That was the beginning of his calling. A moment of encouragement from a coach became life changing for Ricardo, his family, youth in Haiti, and the Bismarck community. Riccardo went on to play college soccer in the USA, then professionally in France, the USA, and Haitian National team for nine years. He also played in the Gold Cup, World Cup Qualifiers, and the Francophone Olympics.
Ricardo founded Magic Soccer FC in Bismarck a decade ago, driven by a vision to elevate young athletes in our community. The spark that ignited this journey came from Ricardo’s keen observation of local talent and the realization that there was a gap in high-quality training opportunities for youth soccer players. He saw an opportunity to create a nurturing environment where every player could reach their potential, both on and off the field.

ne conversation with Katie Oakland will leave most blown away by this western woman who brought ordinary horsemanship to the extraordinary people in the community of Bismarck/Mandan. When Katie was a junior in highschool, her mom took her to an Equine Assisted Service Center near Grand Forks, ND to volunteer for the day. No one could have predicted that what Katie experienced that day would change the trajectory of her entire life and the life of her family. The energy she felt was life-changing. There was something incredibly special to Katie about the horses, staff, and volunteers. The lives they were impacting in many therapeutic ways was unlike anything she had ever experienced.
Therapeutic Riding 4 Heart & Soul (TR4HAS) was founded in 2016, southeast of Bismarck, beginning with their pilot program. The ethos of the program is ethics and horsemanship. What started with a few horses and volunteers has evolved into a four season, fully operational facility serving those with disabilities, at-risk youth, terminally ill, and those who have experienced trauma. It provides inclusive activities that encompass agriculture and a midwesterner’s vision of hope that is an essential part of healing in today’s world. The horses set this program apart; they are the true heart and soul of what makes TR4HAS what it is today.
Katie’s definition of success is having the capacity to successfully serve the growing need that Bismarck/Mandan presents. Katie and her team of staff, interns, and volunteers are contin-
uously working towards meeting these needs by offering therapeutic riding, equine facilitated psychotherapy, and trauma focused equine assisted learning. Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health Community Health Improvement Plan for 20222024 has brought mental health into the forefront of their priorities. To answer that priority with additional solutions, TR4HAS is providing alternative mental health opportunities to this community and its members, as well as providing atrisk youth services.
Katie continues to cast vision for the future of TR4HAS by adding additional programming to include occupational therapy, holistic healing through food sovereignty, and additional mental health practitioners. For the community, this equine assisted center has something special to offer everyone. These culturally appropriate activities combined with evidence-based practices meet a growing need as the community continues to expand and thrive. For Katie, this isn’t just a 9-5 occupation; it is a way of life. She is fully immersed in extraordinarily living every moment of her life, making a difference in both measurable and immeasurable ways.

Desirae Earl, owner of Desirae’s Makeup & Beauty Lounge, is no stranger to family owned businesses. She grew up in the small town of Napoleon, ND, where her father owned and operated the local hardware store. Desirae grew up working there and loved seeing the ins and outs of how a locally owned business operated. It was during that time she began to love the idea of being her own boss. Naturally, when the opportunity arose to purchase the store she had been managing for several years, she knew it was time. She found a new location in downtown Bismarck and remodeled the space to suit the luxurious brands she represents. She rebranded to Desirae’s Makeup & Beauty Lounge.
Desirae loves getting to know her customers and building a relationship with them. This woman-owned business offers a welcoming environment of luxury and gives them a one on one experience from the moment they walk into the Beauty Lounge. She focuses on clean, non-toxic brands as well as ingredients that are healthy and don’t cause irritation or sensitivities.
Success for Desirae is in seeing measurable growth in her business through all the referrals coming in from current customers. Her team is hands-on; they love to help women find products for skin care and the looks they desire. Her customers leave feeling confident that they can trust the products they purchased. Desirae’s other measure of success is in running the business she had always dreamed of while raising a family at
the same time. Her family has grown during her six years of entrepreneurship. Being able to fulfill both of those roles simultaneously has been a beautiful experience for Desirae.
In the next five years, Desirae is looking forward to continued growth and expanding into a larger space to meet the needs of the community, including possibly adding additional brands and services. One of the biggest offers they have that sets them apart is their one-on-one makeup lessons, teaching their clients how to apply the makeup prior to or after their purchase. Additionally, they offer special event applications, makeup for photo sessions, and the carrying of brands that can’t be found anywhere else in the area.
Desirae has a unique business that is inspiring many women in the community. Her one stop shop for everything from fragrances to self-tanning, to makeup and everything in between is convenient when purchasing a gift for yourself or others.
