ESTEPONA LIVED ITS STREETS – AUTUMN EDITION 2025
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: PIANO CONCERT
Followingourarticleinthepreviousedition, itappearsthatMario Jiménez, the new Mayor of Manilva, is beginning to earn credibility for his genuine efforts to communicate with residents and enhance the overall quality of life in the municipality despite the historical scepticism that often surrounds local administration.
A recent example of this new approach can be seen in the swift resolutionofalong-standingfloodingissueonCalleMarquésde Larios. After just one phone call from a concerned resident, the matter was promptly addressed. For years, neglected and debris-filled gutters had caused rainwater to enter homes and cause repeated damage. At last, as the accompanying photos show, theproblemhasbeenproperlyresolved.
Naturally, not every challenge can be solved overnight. The parking situation, for example, remains complex. As the area continues to attract more residents and visitors, the shortage of parkingspacesbecomesincreasinglyevident.Inourlastedition, we proposed several suggestions that might help alleviate the pressure, and we remain hopeful that some positive measures willsoonfollow.
Over the past few weeks, we visited PuertodelaDuquesato speak with local business owners about what improvements they believe are most needed. Judging by their responses and their experience with previous administrations many expressed doubts about whether meaningful change wouldoccur.
One restaurant owner in particular noted his longstanding frustration, pointing out that he has repeatedly urgedpastcouncilstoreinvest some of the revenue generatedintheportbackinto the area itself — to improve cleanlinessandcreateamore upmarket appearance that would benefit both businesses andvisitorsalike.
During our visit, we also noticed a few issues that seem out of place. The only significant disturbancecamefromalarge, noisycrowdgatheredoutsideanIrishbar, drinkingandobstructing the walkway and shouting late into the night. This raises an important question: could certain activities be preventing neighbouring establishments from maintaining the refined and welcoming atmosphere they strive to offer? Perhaps a review of business licences and where in the port theyaregranted wouldhelpensureabetterbalancebetweenleisureandlocalharmony.
Anothermatterofconcernisthesaleofcounterfeitgoods.Spanishlawclearlyprohibitsthesaleof imitation products, with severe penalties for offenders Yet, right in the heart of the square, stalls openly display fake handbags, while so-called “lookie-lookie” men move from table to table approachingdinerswithsimilargoods andsometimesmore.
While some tourists may find this amusing or even make purchases, the question remains: at what cost? Beyond breaking the law, such practices undermine the image of the area and discourage legitimatebusinessesfromofferinggenuine,high-qualityproductsatfairprices.
As we await a formal response from Mayor Mario Jiménez, we invite residents and business ownerstosharetheirthoughts, comments, andsuggestions. With open dialogue and collective effort, we can support the new mayor in developing positive, lasting solutions that continue to improvethequalityoflifeforeveryoneintheManilvaarea

The San Roque Library Network is delighted to announce the 11th “INSTANTS OF READING” Photography Competition, an initiative designed to encourage creativity and artistic expression through the theme of reading. The competition invites participants to explore the many facets and dimensions of reading, capturing moments that reflect the joy, imagination, and inspiration that books and literature bring to people’s lives.
The main objective of the competition is to select 13 outstanding photographs that highlight the beauty and significance of reading. These images will be published in the 2026 Reading Calendar of the San Roque Library Network, providing a platform to celebrate both the participants’ artistic talent and the central role of reading in cultural life
The competition offers a unique opportunity for photographers of all levels to engage with the literary world in a creative way, transforming simple reading moments into compelling visual stories that can inspire and delight others.
The creation of the San Roque residential development of Sotogrande arose from a series of coincidental events in 1962. A marketing director at the airline Swissair decided to gift a few loyal clients with free plane tickets. Among these fortunate executives was Fredy Melian, an employee of the Ayala Corporation in Manila, Philippines, who decided to take the opportunity to visit Spain, the country of his ancestors.
By chance, the night before his departure, his boss at the company, Joseph McMicking, called him to assign a mission: to search for land somewhere along the Mediterranean coast suitable for the construction of an elite residential development For Fredy, his holiday had come to an end, but on the other hand, this marked the first small step towards the creation of a worldrenowned exclusive development, where, in the not-too-distant future, he would become the company’s first director.
The aim was to find a large estate with at least one kilometre of coastline, abundant water reserves, and good accessibility The first option considered was the purchase of almost the entire island of Formentera (Balearic archipelago). However, Fredy Melian travelled the entire Spanish Mediterranean coast by motorcycle, gathering proposals to take back to the Philippines
After carefully studying all the options, Joseph McMicking and his nephews, Jaime and Enrique Zobel, decided to purchase the Paniagua estate, located in the municipality of San Roque, very close to the Rock of Gibraltar The site had sufficient water from the nearby Guadiaro River, as well as a nearby airport in the British colony and the possibility of acquiring neighbouring estates such as Sotogrande, Conchudo, and Valderrama
Authorities did not place any obstacles in McMicking’s way when developing Sotogrande, at a time when foreigners were not allowed to purchase land without military approval. Moreover, the development’s location in a militarily sensitive area, given its proximity to the Rock and Morocco, might have suggested a different attitude, but fortunately, this was not the case.
By 1964, McMicking had hired the world’s leading golf architect, Robert Trent Jones, giving him access to the entire estate to choose the perfect location for the first golf course, around which the residential development would later be planned. The first road built in the development would become what is now Paseo del Parque, the most iconic avenue in Sotogrande This access facilitated the construction of the first bungalows adjacent to the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande
McMicking’s visionary approach included burying electrical cables and designing the streets of the development according to US highway construction standards. Quality was, without doubt, the overarching principle, and in terms of gastronomy, the development did not disappoint, offering exceptional restaurants serving both creative international cuisine and traditional Andalusian recipe

Manifesto for Mental Health
Although World Mental Health Day falls on 10 October, the Mayor of Manilva, Mario Jiménez, and the Councillor for Social Welfare, Laura Salazar, together with representatives from Afesol (the Association of Relatives and People with Mental Illness of the Costa del Sol), took the opportunity to publicly read a statement in support of this vital cause
The reading highlighted the importance of raising awareness about mental health issues, reducing stigma, and promoting access to care and support for those affected It also emphasised the role of families, professionals, and the community in fostering an environment of understanding and compassion
The event was attended by members of the Town Council and local residents, who joined in recognising the ongoing efforts of organisations like Afesol in improving the wellbeing of people with mental health conditions in the municipality Through initiatives such as this, Manilva continues to demonstrate its commitment to social welfare and the promotion of mental health for all

When people ignore their partners to look at their phones, they may cause more harm than they realize A recent study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships found that feeling ignored because of phone use can lead to emotional deprivation and lower relationship satisfaction.
Phubbing happens when one partner diverts attention from the other to check messages, browse social media, or scroll through apps Although it may seem harmless, the behaviour can make the other person feel dismissed or unimportant. While earlier research linked phubbing to decreased intimacy and happiness, this new study explores why it affects relationships so deeply
The COVID-19 lockdowns created a unique situation for researchers With couples spending unprecedented time together, phones became both tools for social connection and sources of tension
The study observed 51 couples (102 individuals) from three US cities between April and September 2020 All participants lived together without other housemates and met specific health criteria Most were heterosexual, though some same-sex couples were also included
More Phone Time, Less Connection Participants completed surveys measuring three key areas:
1 Perceived phubbing how often they felt their partner used a phone during interactions
2.Affection deprivation whether they felt they received enough expressions of love such as hugs, smiles, or caring words
3 Relationship satisfaction how happy they were overall with their partnership
We look forward to your comments and opinion, please submit them to www.webexpresssguide.com
Researchers used dyadic analysis, meaning they looked at how each partner’s experiences influenced both themselves and their partner.
The findings were clear: when people felt that their partner often focused on their phone, they reported stronger feelings of affection deprivation This emotional gap was directly linked to lower relationship satisfaction. In short, feeling ignored by a partner’s phone use can make people feel less loved, which in turn weakens the relationship
Interestingly, the effects were not one-sided A partner who felt neglected often became less affectionate or emotionally available, which further reduced their partner’s satisfaction This created a negative feedback loop where both partners felt disconnected
“One major takeaway is that being ignored because your partner is on their phone can make you feel undervalued, and that slowly erodes relationship quality,” Denes explained. “Even if phone use isn’t intended to hurt, it can still create emotional distance Couples can benefit from setting boundaries and making a conscious effort to express affection”
One might assume that if both partners use their phones equally, the effects might cancel out but the study found otherwise Even when both partners admitted to frequent phone distractions, the negative consequences persisted
“We expected mutual phubbing might soften the impact,” Denes said, “but it didn’t Both partners still felt less satisfied and more emotionally deprived”
Because the study captured data from one point in time, it couldn’t prove cause and effect It’s possible that people already unhappy in their relationships noticed more phone use, or that dissatisfaction encouraged more screen time
Researchers also suggest exploring how affection deprivation functions in other contexts, such as longdistance relationships or periods of individual stress
“Our broader goal is to understand what helps couples stay emotionally connected,” Denes said “That might include showing affection, communicating openly, or setting boundaries around technology”
