Life expectancy lowest for a decade. Life expectancy in England has fallen to its lowest level since 2011. Public Health England (PHE) said excess deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic caused life expectancy to fall by 1.3 years for men, to 78.7, and 0.9 years for women to 82.7. As well as pointing to the pandemic, PHE said there had been an “unprecedented” rise in deaths caused by alcohol use, up 20% last year compared to 2019.

PURA VITA IS A WAY OF LIFE An interview with Gabriela Giumba (By E. Gladstone)

I have recently had the pleasure of meeting Gabriela in her new restaurant, “Pura Vita” in Sotogrande, to discover the real meaning of “Vegan Cuisine”.

I asked her to tell me what prompted her to start the restaurant.

“I started cooking during the pandemic times and I discovered the love of cooking that runs in my family from my grandmother and my mother. When I was a child, “she added, “I spent hours in the kitchen with them, just watching them, it was like a dream for me. I preferred staying in the kitchen to going outside playing with the children. Traditional Rumanian cuisine is extensive, diverse and delicious, “she continued, “I feel like my grandmother is guiding me and motivating me”.

“The restaurant concept is the result of a natural progression of events. I was suffering from anxiety and feeling depressed” she said “then I found that cooking made feel better so I began to spend hours in my small home kitchen cooking Rumanian traditional dishes, mainly my grandmother’s recipes, and asking everyone I knew to try them.

As my range of dishes increased, I started to think of the treatment that animals must endure to end up on our tables, of the environment and the health of people. They say you are what you eat, so I made it my task to do something to improve the lifestyle of future generations and create a healthy menu.

Can you imagine being re-incarnated as a chicken?

I have converted all of my Grandmother’s recipes into 100% Pure Vegan dishes. I mean I have recreated not just the dishes but most importantly each and every ingredient that goes into them. I also make my own videos to show how each step of the preparation. Amazingly I got 7.4 million ‘Likes’ and 200,000 followers online. I was even invited to appear on Rumanian TV.

I did start to write a book but I live here, not in Rumania” she added “and Sotogrande seemed to be the obvious and ideal place to open my restaurant, an affluent, multinational residential area”.

“Why not Madrid?” I asked “Hopefully I am on my way there” she answered. “Right now I am spending most of my time here in the kitchen supervising, training and teaching the staff. Eventually I may look to expand in San Pedro or Nueva Andalucía or Estepona. Thanks to my husband and his vast experience in the restaurant business I am lucky to have the right backing.”

While chatting, the head waiter brought an omelette dish for us to try. “Go ahead, try this, what do you think?” she said.

It looked like a thin folded over omelette, filled with a mixed salad and feta cheese. And it tasted excellent but what is important it that it was 100% vegan, no eggs and no cheese.

It really tasted like an egg omelette, including the feta!

This was followed with a plate of spaghetti carbonara with parmesan cheese. It looked and tasted great, as it was meant to.

“You should try my Sushi Salmon” she said “I am adding new dishes to the menu on a weekly basis. I think I have been given an opportunity to see people enjoying really healthy food while helping them to change their life style and do away with animal products and by-products.

She paused here for a moment then said: - “If the creation and presentation of my dishes is comparable to painting, then you could say that I also create my own colours to paint with. When I create the required ingredients, every single ingredient I use has to be re-created with absolute precision so as to taste and look as it is intended. Even the wine we serve here is certified 100% vegan.”

I found this meeting with Gabriela not just interesting but also instructive, she is a profound thinker, very reserved and fully dedicated to her vocation. Personally I never thought it was possible to make an omelette with no eggs that looked and tasted like an omelette.

Mediterranean Orzo SALAD WITH dressing

By Chef Gabriela Giumba of Pura Vita Sotogrande INGREDIENTS

YOGURT DRESSING

* 200 gr baby spinach * 1 red pepper * 1 cucumber * 1 red onion * 200 gr vegan feta cheese * 100 gr kalamata olives * 200 gr cherry tomatoes * 500 gr orzo * 50 gr radish

* 1/2 cup olive oil * 2 cloves garlic minced * 3 tablespoons lemon juice * 1 teaspoon dry mustard * Salt and pepper to taste * 2 dashes vegan Worcestershire sauce * 3 tablespoons freshly shredded vegan parmesan cheese or more to taste * 1 cup vegan greek yogurt * 1 tsp dried oregano

Instructions • •

Bring a pot of water to a boil, season with salt, and cook the orzo for 10 minutes. Drain, rinse, and set aside to cool.

In a bowl, whisk all the dressing ingredients and mix them well until creamy

Refrigerate for 1 hour or overnight before serving. The pasta is best within 2-3 days, but will last in the refrigerator up to 1 week.

Transfer the cooled orzo to a large mixing bowl. Add the spinach, chopped vegetables, and olives, then crumble half of the feta cheese over the pasta.

Pour the dressing over the pasta mixture and gently fold until the pasta and veggies are coated. Taste for seasoning and top with the remaining feta cheese.

JUANJO RYP, DIBUJANTE ALGECIREÑO QUE TRIUNFÓ EN MANILVA

By Juan Emilio Ríos Vera Corría el año 1971 en nuestra vieja piel de toro, cuando salieron a la luz las crípticas caras de Belmez, cuando el rock andaluz se abría camino en una Andalucía con ganas de reivindicaciones y de levantar la cabeza para pedir justicia y libertad, cuando la España pacata y franquista respiraba un poco de aire fresco. En esa España en continua transformación, nace en Algeciras Juan José Rodríguez Prieto, que para el mundo del cómic y de la historieta, sería simplemente Juanjo Ryp. Pronto comenzó el inquieto niño en atiborrarse de tebeos, los españoles, y de cómics, los que venían de fuera, sobre todo, de Estados Unidos, y de mangas, los que venían del lejano Oriente, léase Japón, y se dejó influenciar por autores como Manara, Saudelli, Schuiten y sobre todo de Dios en la Tierra, es decir, del todopoderoso Moebius, de cuyo culto se hizo adepto y fervoroso correligionario.

Pero, como todos esos ídolos estaban muy lejos de su Algeciras natal, no tuvo más remedio que buscar qué extrañas criaturas compartían en su provinciana ciudad los mismos gustos y filias que él y entonces fue cuando se topó con todo un bestiario variopinto y diverso, comandado por maese Garry, ese culo inquieto que, antes como ahora, sigue fiel a las mismas directrices de vida, sin cambiar un ápice en sus maneras de pensar y de comportarse, siempre alternativo, ácrata y revolucionario.

Allí estaban en el momento justo Jesús Barony, Jesús Mescua, Sebastián González, Pepe Marín o Eugenio Santos, entre otros.

Y ese grupo de locos maravillosos fue el germen de lo que se llamó “el club de amigos del Cómic y la Ilustración” que pronto dio jugosos frutos como los fanzines “Humor Sátiro” o “Cristal”, primero con “C” de Cómic y luego con “K” de Kafka y de irreverencia hacia el poder establecido, “Caballete”, “Data” o “La Historieta” que colocaron a Algeciras en un centro neurálgico del fanzine a nivel nacional.

No mucho después la prestigiosa empresa estadounidense “Avatar”, le encargaría ser el dibujante para todo el mundo del Robocop de Frank Miller, lo que le catapultó internacionalmente, generando una legión de seguidores en todo el mundo. En 2010 ficha por Marvel Comics para encargarse de series tan influyentes como Caballero Luna, The Punisher y Wolverine.

Su impresionante obra ha sido refrendada con galardones como el Grand Prix de L`Imaginaire y otros muchos que sería imposible de enumerar en este momento.

Aquí en Manilva causó sensación en las II jornadas de Cómic y desde entonces es muy seguido en redes por los manilveños que lo conocieron aquí. Y sí, es de Algeciras, tierra de genios, y no solo de la guitarra.
