Schools are being urged to hold lessons in body confidence as a new survey reveals that one in four Britons is depressed by their appearance.

A new project called Be Real aims to tackle the issue which campaigners say is trapping millions of people in the UK in an unhealthy cycle of depression, short-term dieting, cosmetic intervention and eating disorders.

too well in fact though one or two of us preferred no alcohol.

Although the flu seems to have had the better of many on this occasion, nevertheless this first Dinner Club meeting was a terrific success.

To begin with the reception on arrival was warm and very welcoming which made everyone feel quite at ease while being shown to the table. The restaurant itself is so designed that one can feel part of the whole ambiance yet also create one’s own ambience without interference from other tables or groups.

By the time we got to the desserts the party was really swinging and possibly even getting louder by the minute so quite frankly we did not get many comments about these apart from the fact that they were very well presented and delicious. I may be traditional but I think that the home-made sticky toffee pudding was definitely a winner.

It was difficult to get everyone to agree to leave. No-one wanted to move and the meal was followed by some other drinks just to prolong the stay.

We all enjoyed this first meal, all said they would return to KOKOMO on their own accord, not only so they also added that they will not wish to miss the next Diners’ Club meeting.

The food was superb and extremely well presented. The home-made chicken liver paté I was told was a delight and the Carpaccio starter was most commented on.

As far as the main courses are concerned the Sirloin steak proved most popular with the majority– tender and blending well with the garlic mushrooms and small tomatoes. But then the Cajun blackened Organic fillet of Salmon was certainly a winner that almost everyone just had to try.

The house wines both white and red were very good and really flowing well, 10

Or better perhaps a lesson in conservation?

Once upon a time, grocery stores, as opposed to supermarkets, put our groceries into brown paper bags that we reused for various things; even to make brown paper book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that the books were kept as clean and tidy as possible so they could be passed on to other children. Now we are made to buy throw away plastic bags to put the shopping in and add to the mountain of refuse that we collect when we buy our shopping. www.webexpressguide.com

Just look at you rubbish bin at the end of the day or even week; it is full to the top with empty wrappings, boxes and packaging of all sorts as opposed to real organic waste. Back then, we returned milk bottles, lemonade bottles & beer bottles to the shops. The shops then sent them back to the suppliers to be washed, sterilized and refilled, so that the same bottles were used over and over. This is real recycling.

We did not need doctors to tell us to walk a mile a day to keep down our weight and fight obesity and diabetes 2, back then we had to walk up and down stairs because we didn’t have an escalator in every store or office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go 200 yards.

People took the bus and children rode bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mothers into a 24-hour taxi service in the family’s expensive car or van, which cost swhat a whole house used to.

There may be a lot to be said for today’s throw away nappies but in the past we 12

washed the baby’s nappies, we dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind & solar power actually really did dry our clothes back then.

Children got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brandnew clothing For home entertainment there was just one radio in the house, not a TV in every room.

And if anyone did own a TV, it had a small screen not one the size of a football pitch.

When cooking, we blended and stirred by hand as we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send by post, we used layers of old newspapers to cushion it, not plastic bubble wrap. We didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn, we simply used a push mower using human power.

Most of all we exercised by working so we was no need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity We drank from a tap or fountain when we

were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen and we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest leisure park.

While the present generation may comment on how wasteful we used to be, there is no

denying that we certainly have made our lives more comfortable to the extreme but we have also added more speed and stress to our way of life and I do think that there is certainly a good lesson to be leaned by looking back and perhaps even adopt some of the lessons that the our grandparents from past can teach us. I am sure we could be a much healthier race.

Is nudity permitted in Spain?

We are certainly not born fully dressed, the human body was not designed to be wrapped up in clothes and subjected to artificial heat and light sources and air conditioning.

It would seem that millions of normal people describe how good it feels to have the sun and breeze on their skin, also to be less self conscious of one’s appearance in realising that most other people do not have a perfect body.

Sunbathing and swimming are the most popular nudists’ activities. A natural all 14

over tan is very appealing and swimming in the nude is bliss when costumes are really uncomfortable and these days even pointless.

Apparently naturism is also very sociable.

Naturists are happy, friendly people pleased to have discovered a way of being and treat everyone with respect and as equals. This is when you realise that after all we are all equals; age, shape, race, creed and colour are irrelevant in naturism and thousands of practising naturists families all over the world enjoy a healthy way of life where children are

brought without the usual hang-ups about their bodies.

Simple nudity is not sexually stimulating; in naturist places you will find people doing what you see anywhere else, only without clothes.

Officially there are no laws against nudism in Spain and in theory you can strip off and wonder anywhere totally nude, but then... it is not quite so. If it is not for being nude they may well find you guilty of some other related offence.

For example, it is absolutely illegal to wander in the streets of Barcelona even in bikini, never mind in the nude. This includes men in shorts or bare-chested. The local authorities maintain that beachwear is for the beach so there are about 14 known nudist beaches in the area.

As everything else in Spain, it is legally permitted and it is not depending on the circumstances, one thing is certain nudism is widely practised on Spanish beaches.

Certain beaches have been classified as “nudist beaches” but it does not mean that only nudists are allowed on these beaches, in the same way it is also acceptable for there to be nudists present on “non-nudist” beaches and it is still possible to be arrested for any “public act of indecency”.

In reality there are no ‘nudist beaches’ as such, though there are beaches that have come to be known as such through the behaviour of the bathers.

The local government in Cadiz, Andalusia, has raised the possibility of fining people caught naked on their beaches, which has raised a number of legal questions.

You can’t just strip off on any family beach; believe me the wrath of an irate Spanish mother is worse than any trouble you could get into from a policeman!

Even the most popular and busy beaches may have an area at one end where nudity is practiced. If a beach is secluded, nudity should be acceptable there. In general the Spanish have a remarkably relaxed attitude towards nudity on their beaches especially when you consider that Spain is still a staunchly catholic country.

So, it’s up to you where you decide to strip off, but be aware that it is still possible to be arrested for any “public act of indecency”.

Use common sense, if you find yourself on a busy family beach with no nudists, stripping can give you a problem. Many beaches have a “nudist end”, try and find it. On remote or relatively quiet beaches, it’s easier not to offend anyone

Oficialmente no hay leyes en contra del nudismo en España y en teoría uno puede desnudarse y pasearse por cualquier lugar totalmente desnudo, pero.... no es exactamente así.

Al parecer, el naturismo es también muy sociable. Los naturistas son gente feliz, amables, satisfechos de haber descubierto una nueva manera de ser y tratan a todos con respeto y como iguales. Se dan cuenta de que después de todo, todos somos iguales;

the marinade 75ml/2½fl oz soy sauce 50ml/2fl oz rice vinegar 1 banana shallot, finely sliced 2 tbsp soft dark brown sugar 1 lime, zest only 0.5cm/¼in knob fresh ginger, grated 2 garlic cloves, sliced

the salad dressing 50ml/2fl oz soy sauce 50ml/2fl oz rice vinegar 1 tbsp soft dark brown sugar 1 lemon, juice and zest only 1 chilli finely chopped

Rub the beef with oil and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Heat a heavy-based frying pan and fry the beef for one minute on each side. Remove from the pan and set aside.

For the marinade, mix together all the ingredients in a bowl until well combined.

Place the meat into the bowl and massage the marinade into the meat.

Transfer the meat and marinade into a sealable plastic bag and leave in the fridge to chill for at least two hours.

Meanwhile, for the dressing, whisk together all the ingredients in a bowl until well combined..

Arrange the salad on individual plates, or a large wooden board, and spoon over the dressing.

Once the meat has been chilled, slice it very thinly and arrange on top of the salad

Buying and selling on internet?

Beware the tax office is after you!

There is nothing wrong in selling and buying second hand goods via the internet, however it is very wrong to sell goods for profit as it is wrong to buy new goods and not pay IVA. To avoid confusion between used and new goods, the tax office have now classified the difference between loss or profit on such sales as “capital gain” or “loss” which must be declared on the annual tax return.

Profiteering without paying the due taxes is fraud and it is even greater fraud if new merchandise or services are sold or bought without charging or paying I.V.A. Additionally it is unfair competition for others who are openly trading and paying their dues, therefore the tax office is loses from the sales via the internet as well as the sales that bona fide traders lose out on.

Since 2015 the tax office has started to take notice of sites where sales are made in this matter, the so called social media that are clearly being abused, as a consequence they have started checking the activities eBay, Amazon and others that attract their attention. Though no punitive action has yet been taken so far there is no doubt the problem will soon be tackled.

You are warned! Since such sales are normally made by individuals (and even companies) the tax office will demand proof of cost against sale price as well proof of IVA payment from the purchaser. The profits are considered a 44

“patrimonial” gain with at least 19% due on the annual return.

The penalty for not declaring is the payment of the tax due plus 150% of its value. The same penalty applies to the buyers for purchasing without paying I.V.A. sobreviví al gimnasio Gustavo Ángel Lorca Carrero Betacaroteno, triglicéridos, isotónico... son palabras que tendrían que ser solo familiares para los químicos orgánicos, pero acabo de cumplir treinta y cinco años. Dios mío, estoy más cerca de los cuarenta que de los treinta. ¡Si me siento joven!

Paso 1: Aceptación.

Las básculas de las farmacias no tienen nada contra ti. Son máquinas desalmadas que imprimen un ticket minúsculo con su veredicto. En mi caso: “Sobrepeso” (Autómata sin corazón).

Al parecer el espejo de mi cuarto de baño compartía opinión con la dichosa maquinita, incluso mi pareja parecía demasiado vacilante al decirme aquello de que estás muy bien. Está claro, no lo estaba y hay que tomar medidas.

Paso 2: Decisiones Voy a tener que comer menos, pero sin pasar hambre, que lo he leído en las redes sociales. Tras una rápida búsqueda en Google descubro la primera de una larga lista de palabras: Carbohidratos. Al parecer son como el anticristo de la comida, cuanto más lejos mejor. Sus lugartenientes en el malvado ejército nutricional son las grasas y los azúcares. Llegué a la siguiente conclusión: “Si está bueno, no lo pruebes”.

Tras unas semanas de martirio culinario, en la que los únicos que se salvaban de la quema eran los vegetales, los pollos y los pavos (animalitos), llegó a mis oídos que no se puede hacer dieta sin hacer ejercicio. Dicho y hecho, busqué a esos amigos sanos y naturales que todos tenemos y me apunté con ellos a su gimnasio.

Lo más parecido a un chándal que había en mi armario era un pijama de cuadros, así que una tarde de compras resultó en un par de pantalones sueltos, zapatillas con suelas deportivas (por si me decidía por el atletismo profesional) y varias camisetas que jamás habría soñado comprar un año antes. ¡Ya estoy listo!

Paso 3: La tort... El gimnasio.

La primera vez que entras en un gimnasio resulta desconcertante, y no lo digo solo por el aroma a esfuerzo, sino por la variedad de aparatos y diseños, algunos de ellos claramente pensados para una raza diferente a la humana con incomprensibles objetivos.

Me alejé de ellos con paso decidido hacia el que me resultó más familiar, la cinta de correr. Esa sí que la había visto en alguna serie de televisión y me pareció inofensiva.

El botón rojo de emergencia pita, pita muy fuerte. Lo descubrí a los cinco minutos de estar corriendo en el modo “colina suave”. No sé en qué estaban pensando los programadores de aquel chisme, pero imagino que serían escaladores profesionales, no se puede sudar tanto en una colina suave.

Era como si alguien me hubiese lanzado un cubo de agua caliente.

Con el pitido acudió un monitor que se preocupó seriamente por mi estado de salud.

En cuanto pude hablar y ponerme en pie de nuevo me dio varios consejos para un “entrenamiento ligero” que comenzaba con unas abdominales. Tres, en concreto, tres fueron las que resistí antes de que me diera un tirón en el estómago, parece imposible, pero puedo jurar que es lo que sentí en aquel momento junto con una extraña indecisión entre vomitar o desmayarme. Por una pura cuestión de orgullo, y por no desmayarme sobre mi propio vómito, conseguí solo perder el sentido unos segundos y salir de allí con la poca dignidad que me quedaba. Una retirada táctica de manual.

Paso 4: Equilibrio En un par de semanas intentando cuidarte se aprenden algunas cosas. He encontrado un dietista que me ha descubierto un nuevo mundo de sabores, la cinta de correr puede ponerse en modo “planicie”, y hay un ritual previo a las abdominales llamado calentamiento que te ayuda a evitar los tirones intestinales (lo he buscado y soy el primer caso documentado de esta dolencia).

Era solo cuestión de buscar un poco de equilibrio, al parecer voy a seguir teniendo treinta y cinco todo este año y a mi pareja no le importa mucho. La vida es una sucesión de experiencias, mejor si sobrevivimos a todas.

doesn’t mean I can’t sympathize with Jane and Johnny no-mates, after all beauty as they say, is only skin deep.

So what kind of advice do I offer to the Grinch’s? If you have been too unlucky or ugly to get to convince someone to accept your invitation, luckily enough there is one day a year that could have been made for such a poor unfortunate; a day when, without fear of ridicule, even Quasimodo himself can walk loud and proud into a card shop and buy a big, soppy, flower covered, overpriced piece of paper for the Esmeralda of his dreams.

I am talking St Valentine’s Day; now nobody really knows the actual truth behind the patron saint of ugly people, but it can be safely assumed that he was, like myself, a caring humanitarian and maybe even a latterday champion of the underdog, again, like myself. One thing is certain however, and that is, thanks to his legacy, the aesthetically challenged are guaranteed at least one legover a year or at least a shot at one.

With the help of the saintly day or any other day, and why not, the first port of call therefore, is the flower shop; all women like to receive flowers (Unless you are taking no chances, and going for a blind girl).

Now the trick here is to bite the bullet and go for a really expensive bunch, a single red rose is all well and good if you have the kind of looks to carry off such a stingy gesture, but unless you are the Milk Tray Man type, do yourself a favour and look as if you don’t mind paying for a bit of the other. Chocolates are traditionally a love token, here again, you need to go for a big flash box, a family bag of Revels just isn’t going to swing it, and if I might add a word of advice, hold back on handing over the chocky’s until you see the

way things are shaping up, after all a 10 euro box of chocolates is quite an investment and if the ice queen isn’t going to give out, you will need something to eat whilst waiting for your bus.

What to wear is important, try not to wander too far away from your usual mode of attire, keep in mind that you wear what you wear because you feel comfortable in it, being in a strange place, with a complete stranger, for the first time is uncomfortable enough as it is without having the point of a brand new Ben Sherman shirt collar burrowing its way into your shoulders. Avoid buying any new items of clothing as you may find yourself in some unfamiliar positions (if your luck is in) and therefore don’t want to be squirming about in too much polyester, I am sure I don’t need to tell you that a build up of static electricity, could lead to some nasty scorching!

A favourite starting point for the repugnant Romeo is a darkened restaurant and this time honoured tradition of meeting the intended victim in the dark and filling them up with alcohol as quickly as possible has worked miracles for some over the years, take for example Chris Evens and Billie Piper (although having said, a few million pounds works just as well as a bat cave!)

At the end of the day, the path of true love never runs smooth and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so my advice to all those seeking true love but carrying the burden of severe ugly stick abuse, would be, remember, not all frogs turn into prince charming, but that didn’t stop Miss Piggy and she was a bit of a babe! www.webexpressguide.com
