The other day I made a purchase on the internet from a reputable company in Spain; I have done so regularly often, using their secure page. On this occasion, on the next day, I received a phone call from an employee of that company advising me that the item could not be sent because the credit card payment had not been received, asking me to give my details again over the phone so that the matter could be checked out.

This seemed rather odd to me and I refused to do so. I knew such information is only asked for on a secure internet page and not on the phone. I called back the number (one of the company’s numbers) and, convincingly enough, I spoke to the same person again.

After a brief altercation, I hanged up and called the main switchboard to speak to someone in charge. I was then advised that there was no problem, the credit card had gone through and the item had been already sent. The matter is now being investigated by the company.

Is it not amazing how easily some people are actually willing to believe the blatant lies they are told and how easily they actually fall into the hands of the unscrupulous. So much so, that I recently asked a psychiatrist

if he could explain why it is that some people are more willing to believe really blatant lies rather than the honest truth.

It’s very simple dear Watson, he replied.

A person telling the truth has no need to camouflage his manners, his tone of speech or his dress, it does not occur to him or her to do so. On the other hand, the deceiver is an expert at appearing believable and can become pretty good at it to get believed right away, no proof required; furthermore, knowing what the other person wants to see or hear and presenting it right is what makes a good ‘con- artist’.

It gets even easier to deceive on foreign soil when one of the most common denominators used by deceiver is the same language as the victim’s. The more refined and educated the language used sounds, the more readily it is believed, especially when, in addition to spoken language, recognizable body language signals and expressions are used. Of course this apples to any nationality and its language.

The reason for the deceit is always money; some deceive because they want lots of it and make it a habit to go to any unscrupulous lengths to get as much of it as they can, others deceive to get by or to get jobs that they are not really able or qualified to do.

Perhaps the tables are turning slightly on the Costa del Sol, where the economic crisis has substantially reduced the available opportunities to deceive, obliging many to return to their country in order to survive the crisis.

Although a large number of so called foreign residents has gone back to the roots, I can’t help observing an influx of new faces and an increased number of foreign plated cars of all nationalities, British in particular.

I am not sure what the reason might be, but it could be they have had enough of the clowns that run their country; or perhaps they have had enough of the high level of crime that goes on; or perhaps it is the hypocritical political correctness and the big brother environment that are encouraging the exodus. However, if I am right, this time the new arrivals would be settling here for the right reasons, with the correct expectations and not because of false promises of quick profits on the sale of properties purchased off plan.

Yes the Costa del Sol is a very nice place where to live. The climate, the multinational environment and the Mediterranean are all very attractive, including the proximity to all European countries; I remember it being described as the beach of Europe, the place to spend your holidays.

But for those who wish do reside permanently on the Costa, unless they have the capital to do so, they are not owed a living.

Having spent so many years on the Costa, through two recessions, my advice to everyone needing an income is always the same. Remember that this is a foreign country, the official language is Spanish, the law and taxation systems are different so, before you embark on any business, get your facts straight and research the market well. Most importantly, do not attempt a line of work you know nothing or little about because you can fool some people some of the time but never all of the time.

Avoid copying others just because they seem to get by, the market is small, research it, be original and remember that false claims are short lived.

The early days of the Costa, when everything was novel, have gone; now the demand is for professional services and quality products, it is the way of the future. I am certain that we are now at the start of a slow but steady climb out of the recession; let’s all play our part correctly and get there sooner.

Sirloin Steak with Chunky Chips Recipe This month the Chef recommends a KOKOMO style steak

Ingredients For the chips • •

3 large potatoes (Maris Piper, Golden Wonder or King Edward are ideal) vegetable oil, for deep frying, plus extra for brushing the steaks

For the steaks •

2 x 275g/10oz sirloin steaks, removed from the fridge 15 minutes before cooking salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method 1. Peel and cut the potatoes into about 1cm/½in square chips by 7cm/3in long – it’s important that the chips are roughly all the same size so they cook evenly. Rinse the chips in cold water and dry thoroughly on kitchen towels.

2. Fill a deep-fat fryer or a deep, heavy-bottomed pan two-thirds full with vegetable oil. Heat the oil to 140C-160C/285F300F (CAUTION: Hot oil can be dangerous. Don’t leave unattended) 3. Carefully place the chips in the hot oil for about eight minutes or until just cooked through. Remove from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Retain the oil in the pan, turn up the heat slightly for oil to reach 160-180C/320-355F. 4. Heat a ridged grill pan until hot. Brush the steaks with the vegetable oil. Season on both sides with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the steaks on the hot grill pan.

After a few minutes, turn them 90 degrees, to give diamondpatterned grill marks.

5. Turn them over and repeat on the other side until cooked to your liking. For rare steaks, brown on both sides as described and cook for an additional minute. For medium rare, 2-3 minutes more or 4-5 minutes for well done. It depends on the thickness Allow steaks to rest while you cook the chips a second time.

6. Check the temperature of the oil for the chips as above.

Add the cooked chips to the oil and fry for 2-3 minutes or until crisp and golden. Remove from the hot oil using a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Serve the steaks and chips with grilled tomatoes and mustard on the side

Pkhali Another Georgian Dish It’s hard to find dishes anywhere that so deftly intermingle Eastern and Western worlds.

Sitting at the midpoint of ancient East–West trade routes, Georgians had the advantage of being able to cherry-pick the best of what the Greeks, Mongols, Turks, and Arabs were cooking along the Silk Road. Despite these outside influences, Georgian food remains steadfastly true to itself.

Throughout Georgia, cooks are die-hard about sourcing the best local produce, unless of course the ingredient is already growing in their backyards; it is this loyalty to freshness that accounts for the regional differences in Georgian cuisine.

In a country where meat was historically reserved for special occasions, it’s no wonder that elaborate vegetarian dishes continue to

take center stage in Georgia’s culinary canon.

Pkhali, a family of salads that might be better described as vegetable pâtés, are made with whatever vegetable is on hand (beets, carrots, and spinach are common) and served over bread.

The method is foolproof, to boot: Just boil the vegetable of choice, purée, and squeeze in some lemon juice, minced garlic, and a handful each of cilantro and ground walnuts for good measure.

Georgian cooks will often whip up several types of pkhali, plating them side by side and sprinkling the tops with pomegranate seeds.

If a person is unconscious but breathing, and has no other injuries that would stop them being moved, place them in the recovery position until help arrives.

Keep them under observation to ensure they continue to breathe normally, and don’t obstruct their airway.

If someone is unconscious and not breathing If a person isn’t breathing normally after an incident, call an ambulance and start CPR straight away.

Use hands-only CPR if you aren’t trained to perform rescue breaths.

Reactions to insect stings or after eating certain foods. can be very fast, occurring within seconds or minutes of coming into

contact with the substance the person is allergic to (allergen).

During anaphylactic shock, it may be difficult for the person to breathe, as their tongue and throat may swell, obstructing their airway.

Check if the person is carrying any medication. Some people who know they have severe allergies may carry an adrenaline self-injector, which is a type of pre-loaded syringe. You can either help the person administer their medication or, if you’re trained to do so, give it to them yourself.

After the injection, continue to look after the person until medical help arrives. All casualties who have had an intramuscular or subcutaneous (under the skin) injection of adrenaline must be seen and medically checked by a healthcare professional as soon as possible after the injection has been given.

Make sure they’re comfortable and can breathe as best they can while waiting for medical help to arrive. If they’re conscious, sitting upright is normally the best position for them.

All pathologies ending in "itis" mean inflammation of whatever precedes it, therefore arthritis means joints’ inflammation, these inflammations may be due to various causes such as a badly cured trauma , traumatic arthritis, because of an operation, arthritis postsurgical, because of psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, because of an inflammation of the vertebrae, spondylitis, or, for a still unknown reason, rheumatoid arthritis, the most serious of all because it is degenerative and if the inflammation causing the pain is not treated, it will continue to degenerate the joint until it can no longer move.

A typical example of rheumatoid arthritis is in the hand’s "burst", a departure outward from all phalanges of the hand as seen in the radiography.

Our “thermo-percussion” treatment is most suitable for treating these afflictions, both arthritis and osteoarthritis in the hands.

Because the joints are small, the microwave’s heat transfers to all joints and the light impact perceived by the percussion is deeper too, as a result re-capillarization and maximum regeneration of the joints occurs within the possibilities of each patient.

Fake Autonomo or LEGAL Autonomo?

If you are self employed yet work like an employee for one company, it is illegal and classed as fraud “falso autonomo” and subject to penalties by the Dept of Social Security. This article is provided by Should an inspector discover such a situation, he will forthwith change the status of the autonomo to employee obliging the employer to pay for the full amount of social security since the start of the relationship, plus a fine of €3005 for each fake self employed so employed. Not to overlook that a worker could well report the situation of his own accord in case of a dispute.

If one or more of the following applies, you could be classed as a fake autonomo: • • • •

You are subjected to a fix time-table.

You are not given the chance to use you own initiative but needs to stick to directions given by the “client”.

You are given a fixed regular sum for your work You do not use your own materials or capital to accomplish the work, therefore any profit or loss is assumed by the “client”.

In a nutshell: if the autonomo is fully subjected to the organisational and disciplinary procedures of the “client” then he is not really self employed, but an undercover employee.

Although financially appealing at first, 48

it can end up being rather expensive.

However, in some cases, it may be feasible to consider working as a DEPENDENT AUTONOMO (Trabajador Autonomo Dependiente Economicamente), which means that one can legally work with one predominant “client” who pays 75% of his income as long as the following conditions are met: •

He should carry out his activity with his own assets and productive structure.

While taking the inherent risks of his business activity.

He organises his work according to his own criteria, though he can follow preferences or technical indications of his client. If his client has other employees there must be a clear distinction from them in the way he carries out his tasks.

He is paid in relation to the results of his activity.

There has to be a written commercial contract between the parties, to be registered as one of economically dependent autonomo in the employment offices ( Servicio Público de Empleo Estatal.)

The Dependent Autonomo acts as a “satellite company” that takes care of some side services or a particular part in the

productive process in a self-managed way.

Clearly this could not apply for a waiter.

To qualify the Dependent Autonomo:.

Must not have commercial or industrial premises open to the public.

Must not be part of a Limited company (SL) or Civil Company (SC) He must contribute to work accidents in his Autonomo Fee. (The minimum contribution of a TRADE is €278,60)

If this situation rises some time after the relationship started, the autonomo

The Dependent Autonomo has the right to be acknowledged a minimum of 18 days of holidays by contract, without damaging the relation between the parties.

If the client breaches the contract or suddenly dismisses the worker without cause, the client must pay compensation. The terms of this can be specified in the contract.

Código de Estado miembro de la UE del que proceden los huevos

¿Se ha fijado alguna vez en el código que hay impreso sobre cada huevo? Indica que todos los huevos no son iguales, al menos para las gallinas que los ponen.

Su primer dígito, entre el 3 y el 0, seguido de las iniciales del país de origen (ES para España), ofrece información sobre el grado de bienestar con que han sido criadas estas aves.

Los huevos marcados con el proceden de gallinas que viven en jaulas sin apenas espacio para moverse.

Las instituciones europeas han puesto de manifiesto las dudas que esto genera a nivel de bienestar animal.

Una directiva comunitaria de 1999 obligó a aumentar el espacio para cada gallina dentro de la jaula de 550cm2 a 750 cm2. Pero esta medida, que no ha sido obligatoria hasta 2012, solo garantiza que cada animal dispone de un espacio similar al que ocupa una hoja de papel A4 (627cm2).

Gallinas criadas en suelo Aunque en este caso las gallinas no viven en jaulas, las aves que ponen los huevos marcados con el 2 permanecen en naves cerradas a lo largo de su vida, sin posibilidad de acceder al exterior. La densidad de gallinas también es alta, con hasta 12 por metro cuadrado.

BEWARE OF

PROCESSIONARY CATERPILLARS They are out early this year. By Nazli Kreft van den Kieboom, Pointer Veterinary Clinic Estepona This insect inhabits the warmer regions of southern Europe, the Near East, and North Africa.

It is the habit of the caterpillars to move over the ground in long head-to-tail processions and to sting with urticating hairs, anyone who attempts to molest them.

It is also one of the most destructive of forest insects, capable of defoliating vast tracts of pines during its episodic population surges. The insect is active only during the colder times of the year, spending the warm summer months as a pupa buried in the ground. The moths begin to emerge from the soil in August and shortly thereafter mate and seek out pine trees where they place their eggs.

Each female produces a single egg mass containing up to 300 or so eggs and the caterpillars typically enclose from them four or more weeks after they are laid.

Normally by March the caterpillars are fully grown and leave their nest, following each other 56

in long, head to tail processions and seek out pupation sites in the soil, these processions can be of as many as 300 caterpillars travelling long distances looking for soft soil in which they bury themselves and form their cocoons.

Contact with the hairs causes skin rashes and eye irritations. Susceptible individuals may also develop an allergic response to a protein associated with the hairs of the caterpillar.

Be careful with your pets, dogs and cats are inquisitive! They will be attracted by the movement and the glittering in the sun.

Upon contact with the nose, lips or tongue the hair of the caterpillars will cause an immediate burning sensation followed by an allergic reaction that can vary from a 3x swollen tongue to death by shock.

The first thing to do is to flush the mouth out with loads of water! Then seek veterinary assistance. If you live far away, please contact us; we can instruct you!

Wherever you are in February or March, check the pine trees for the white fluffy nests.

Avoid taking your dog there! If you cannot avoid them, then keep your dog on a short lead. If you live around these nests, them taken away, do not try it yourself because they cause severe eye and skin irritation, and have the pine trees treated in August.

Alternative Medicine on the Costa This month the Prickly Pair look at some of the alternative medicine practitioners on the Costa del Sol while we thank Pete from the campo de Jimena for his interesting suggestion as to what to do with lentils (Ouch!). Should we soak them first?

In the unenlightened good old days, if you felt under the weather, you popped along to your doctor and, unless your doctor was Harold Shipman, you left with a prescription for some pills that made you feel better.

Nowadays it’s all different; your first port of call is the Alternative Practitioner. Now I am not totally cynical and, if there does exist an alternative medicine that hasn’t been previously stuck in some poor Beagles’ eye, then I would be all for it, but, as with anything that appears to be slightly removed from the norm, it will always attract that certain element; you know the ones I mean, yes they are still at it, groping around trying to get on top of the mysteries of the Universe that they are convinced the rest of us are missing.

All this nonsense started a little while back, sometime in the eighties, with Feng Shui, when a flock of housewives from adult evening classes would break into your house and re-arrange your furniture. All well and good as long as you are not blind!!

Thankfully, that particular form of madness seems to have died a death and the only people lamenting its demise would be gold fish and pea shingle salesmen.

However, hot on the heel of Feng Shui, comes Reiki. I am not at all sure what these so called Reiki Masters are up to, but I can’t get out of my head the picture of that big rat in the dressing gown that lived in the sewers with some teenage turtles.

The closest I have got to a plain English explanation is, and I quote: “It is not just Reiki that can bring about positive changes in the way we think and behave, but more about our own beliefs about us. The answer lies within.”

Now, I for one could certainly do with some positive changes to my usual behaviour, but I think that maybe Betty Ford would make a better job of that than a so called Reiki Master. Perhaps I am being a little unfair here, Reiki doesn’t actually claim to be an alternative medicine, and my mentioning it

was solely for the sake of a cheap swipe at something that I am sure is very beneficial to a lot of people. It’s a free world after all and, if some sad s**s really believe that the answer lies within, then who am I to try and winkle it out of them.

However no prisoners can be taken on my next lot; I recently stole a flyer from a window at a coffee shop, advertising an invitation to meet angels. I stole it from the window for two reasons. For one, I didn’t want anybody, who might know me, to see me reading it and, two, I wanted to take it home, so I could p**s myself in the comfort of my own home!

The information gleaned from this flyer seems to be that we are surrounded by angels and, with a little help from the people in the know, we can actually get to meet them and, unlike those shepherds tending their flocks by night, we won’t be scared sh**less by the experience. Oh no! Quite the contrary, our lives will be enriched and rewarded by the

whole thing for a small donation of just €30, although a loaves and fishes buffet and a healing crystal are very kindly thrown in.

Under normal circumstances, for me, a donation of €30 conjures up more spirits than I can humanly handle and the only angels I would be seeing are nurses.

Joking aside, these people are more worrying than the Reiki rabble; by using the term Angels there is an obvious religious connotation and using religion to prey on people’s gullibility is a bit like playing your Joker. I like to see a fair fight, there are plenty of people out there desperate to believe in something and most of them would worship a golden dog’s t**d, if it was given the right P.R. It all just goes to prove it’s a funny old world we live in, but I for one, would prefer not to be given a rub down with a bit of glass by an ex hairdresser from Ongar called Steph the next time the Arch Angel Larios visits me.

Incredible as it may seem, there is a written traffic code, taught to all drivers before their test.

All the same, there are some very annoying things that drivers do, often even done by non Spanish drivers who would not dream of doing so in their own home country.

One of these bad habits is to pull out onto a main road regardless of traffic, expecting cars to slow down or change lane.

Unfortunately the cops are never there when you need them, so what do you do when you want to get out of your garage or even a parking place and find your exit blocked by a parked car?

And what about when you are in a hurry to get somewhere and you find that the road is blocked by a driver having a cosy chat with another driver or worse a pedestrian?

You could call the police but by the time they appear it may be irrelevant. The only natural thing to do in anger is to blast your horn until they clear off , that is also illegal and you should be prepared to have an argument.

Best be patient and if possible ask politely for your way to be cleared.

Все же, есть водители, которые делают неадекватные вещи и очень часто это не испанские водители, которые не стали бы делать такое в своей стране. Одна из вредных привычек выезжать на главную дорогу, несмотря на количество машин, и ждать, что они притормозят или сменят полосу. К сожалению, полиция никогда не на месте когда она нужна. Что же делать, если хочешь выехать из гаража или с парковки, или не можешь выехать из-за припаркованной машины. А если ты торопишься ехать и видишь, что дорога перекрыта машиной, а водитель разговаривает с другим водителем? Можно позвонить в полицию, но пока они приедут, помощь будет уже не нужна. Естественная вещь во время злости сигналить пока не уедут, хотя это не легально и надо быть готовым к спору. Лучше всего быть спокойным и как можно вежливей попросить отъехать.
