or Dr. Komal Patel, podiatry isn’t just a specialty — it’s a calling rooted in compassion. Every day, Dr. Patel says she is driven by the simple but powerful desire of wanting to help people walk pain free.

“It is so satisfying to see my patients walk out of my office pain free,” she explains.

Since June, Dr. Patel has been working as a podiatrist at Hillsdale Hospital, which is the first time the hospital has offered podiatry care to the community. Her services include office visits, surgical podiatric care, and wound care to promote foot health for Hillsdale County.

In general, podiatry is the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle conditions. Some of the conditions that Dr. Patel sees include ingrown toenails, toe and foot deformities, foot and ankle injuries, lower leg and foot ulcers, and diabetic foot conditions.

“In my office, we focus on our patients’ feet and everything that is related to their feet,” Dr. Patel says. “It’s like a one-stop shop for your feet.”

Hillsdale Hospital is now prepared to offer a wide variety of high-quality treatments, including but not limited to custom orthotics, medication, injections, physical therapy or even surgical intervention. Dr. Patel also offers some same-day innovative procedures that can be life changing for patients by quickly and effectively reducing pain.

While Dr. Patel always knew she wanted to go into medicine, it took some time before she settled on podiatry.

“I spent some time getting a master’s in biology. During that time, I discovered podiatry. It was all very interesting to me and soon it just clicked,” she says.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Dr. Patel completed all of her education and medical training in her home state. She specialized in foot and ankle pathologies, receiving her Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine and later completing residency at St. Luke’s University Health Network.

Dr. Patel says that good communication with patients is one of the key values in her practice as a medical provider.

“Being honest with my patients is very important to me. I don’t go around in circles with them. Instead, I tell them honestly and they really appreciate that,” she says. “The patient always comes first, so communication with them and their medical team is very important.”

Currently, Dr. Patel sees patients in her office at the Three Meadows Medical Building two days per week, and spends one day at Hillsdale Hospital.

There, she provides skilled podiatric surgical care and support for Hillsdale Hospital’s Center for Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. As a resource for the entire hospital, she also supports the hospital’s skilled nursing facilities.

Dr. Patel is quick to point out that podiatry is far more than treating in-grown nails and blisters.

“We’re trained in orthopedics, skin care, wound care, and vascular medicine,” she says. “The care we provide can be life changing for patients, sometimes with just one same-day, out-patient visit.”

She explains that she regularly sees patients with diabetes. Those patients are some of the most vulnerable and high-risk when it comes to footrelated complications.

“A lot of people don’t realize how serious foot issues can be, especially for diabetics with poor circulation or peripheral neuropathy,” Dr. Patel says.

“I’ve seen patients come in with wounds they didn’t even know they had, and by the time they do, it’s sometimes too late to avoid amputation.”

To avoid those issues, Dr. Patel says it’s important not to ignore your feet, especially if you have diabetes. Even the smallest wounds can cause major issues if they are left untreated.

Preserving her patients’ mobility and quality of life is a top priority for Dr. Patel and her whole team.

She explains that is why wound care is especially important to her as it can help prevent further infection, or even amputation, which is the last thing she wants for her patients.

“An amputation is a life-changing event,” she says. “I will always do everything I can to prevent amputation, while healing them as soon as possible.”

While quality care is critical, Dr. Patel says that education can also be an invaluable tool in preventative medicine.

“There’s a lack of awareness of foot health that can be challenging,” she says. “When so many patients have never even seen a podiatrist before, that makes communication even more critical.”

Outside of work, Dr. Patel says every day is full to the brim for her and her husband as parents to a fivemonth-old.

“Honestly, my days fly by,” she says. “Between seeing patients and spending time with my daughter, I feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day.” Still, Dr. Patel says she tries to find ways to spend time outdoors, try new restaurants, and live an active lifestyle.

Oh, Deer.

Well, there we had it. Early November and it already snowed the first snow. With it came a visitor sitting in our side yard acting like he owned the place.

My plan for the day was to do a little quilting, start some gift wrapping and make pasties like the Yoopers of Upper Michigan. Instead, we had this unexpected visitor in our side yard. He was One Big Buck, and so majestic and handsome! I named him “Randy.”

Why is it after years of living in Michigan and seeing hundreds of deer, do we still marvel at these magnificent creatures, unless they run out in front of our vehicles?

You have to admit to their beauty or why else are there so many of their heads hanging on people’s walls?

Randy sat in our side yard for about a half hour, just sitting in the snow looking picturesque like a Hallmark Christmas card. He looked a little confused and sad, as if he had an online “hook-up” that stood him up. I wanted to take him in and let him live in our potting shed. Soon he rose and ambled off toward the direction of the St. Joe River, perhaps to pick a fight with another buck and blow off some steam.

I know. They are damaging to property. We have had them dine in our garden and they eat everything – except rhubarb and asparagus. And yes, we have also experienced damage to vehicles when they decide to run into our cars.

But they are still striking creatures.

I have for a long time wanted a pair of sand hill cranes to settle in our yard. Just to walk around, be ornamental and clack the way they do. I think of them like they are Michigan flamingos. But instead, we got Randy, if only for a little while.

While composing this review, it is a snowy, arctic Thanksgiving weekend. This affords me and my fellow readers the pleasure of reading a good book without guilt!

Fellow reader Jan recommends author Marie Bostwick’s The Book Club for Troublesome Women. When I went to the library it was not available, and so, while waiting my turn on the wait list, I found a couple of her older novels. From Here to Home and The Promise Girls. The former tells the story of Mary Dell, a successful quilter. She hosts her own reality tv show co-starring her 30-year-old son Howard, who has Down syndrome. She is being threatened by a young, pretty rival to replace her son and hopefully up the ratings. (It is a thoughtful presentation of a mother and son’s relationship and it introduces a young man with Down syndrome in a positive light.) Unbeknownst to his mother, Howard wants out of the show to pursue his own dreams, and he also has met a girl to spend his life with. I believe you will enjoy this one.

The other book, The Promise Girls, introduces us to three women whose mother is driven for them to be famously well-known. They are test tube babies, each with a donor father who is internationally famous in a particular area of the arts. Joanie is raised to be a concert pianist, Meg a world renowned painter, and Avery an author/writer.

Growing up under this pressure splits them from their mother, and they all take different directions in their lives.

It is an interesting premise of nature vs. nurture.

Jan also recommended The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles. This is historical fiction about the American Library in Paris during WWII and alternates between two timelines.

In 1939, librarian Odie joins the Resistance by using books as a weapon. 1983 Montana teen Lily uncovers a secret about her elderly neighbor Odie. A theme of this novel shows how literature can provide escape, connection, and a moral compass during difficult times. It highlights

the extraordinary heroism that can be found through the actions of the librarians during the war.

On another note, I had heard good things about author Richard Osman, so I decided to give him a try. I randomly picked up The Impossible Fortune and discovered it is his most recent in a five-book series: the Thursday Murder Club mysteries! These stories take place in a peaceful retirement village where four irrepressible retirees spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. I have begun the book, but think perhaps I should go back to the first one entitled The Thursday Murder Club and introduce myself to these four main characters. I am sure each successive story builds on the former.

While researching these five books, I learned that the author Richard Osman has collaborated with director Stephen Spielberg to produce a television show on the series! Character Elizabeth is played by Helen Mirren, Ron is played by Pierce Brosnan, Ibrahim by Ben Kingsley, and Joyce by Celia Imrie. It came out on Netflix this fall. That should be entertaining to watch! Uh oh...I just read several comments from disappointed viewers on this one. The movie does not match the quality of the books (what else is new??). Well, guess I will read the series first, and then maybe turn on the television....

Key Opportunities K

ey Opportunities in Hillsdale is a nonprofit that helps qualifying adults with disabilities enter the workforce and enter community-based programs.

“Key Opportunities is an experienced and skilled vocational rehabilitation organization, meeting all accreditation standards,” the Key Opportunities website reads.

Key Opportunities was founded in 1976 by a group of parents and was connected with the Hillsdale Intermediate School District. It stemmed from an earlier program called Quality Industries, which subcontracted work from local manufacturing industries to provide training and jobs for people with disabilities.

Around 2016, Key Opportunities became more community oriented.

“Everything we do is focused around becoming employed in the community and increasing individuals’ skills,” Key Opportunities Executive Director Julie Boyce said.

Key Opportunities has both youth and adult programs.

The LITE program, which stands for learning independence through experience, teaches individuals skills needed for any job. It includes lessons about different professions. Those in the LITE program also have the opportunity to earn money through entrepreneurship programs along the way.

“People have the choice to participate in community-based programs,” Julie said. “Some people choose to stay on the work floor and earn money, too.”

The CHEFS (Culinary & Hospitality Experience/ Food Service) program at Key Opportunities is a culinary training program.

It is for individuals who are interested in food service or those who simply want to learn to cook. The CHEFS program often pairs with the LITE program to give appreciation to community members who let individuals in the program see their careers in action. People in the CHEFS program also learn how to operate a concession stand.

“For example, the CHEFS program might make blueberry muffins and chocolate chip cookies, and the LITE program might make a thank you card and then take it to the fire department here in Hillsdale and give them those treats, learn about their career, and do a tour of the place,” Julie said.

Key Opportunities’ fastest-growing programs are their community work programs. The Supported Employment program, which functions much like a classic employment agency, connects people to work in the community.

Key Opportunities provides orientation training, job coaching, and transportation to and from work.

The youth program is for people between the ages of 18 and 26. These programs work in conjunction with local school districts, Michigan Rehabilitation Services, and Lifeways—a mental health and referral service—to provide students with work-based learning. Students receive school credit for participating in these youth programs.

Project Discovery, one of the youth programs, allows students to explore soft skills and learn where their talents lie. The discovery process helps those who have never worked before discover their passions and talents and find a good employment match in the community. Students participate in job shadowing and learn independent living skills. On Fridays, students go on a field trip to a business that Key Opportunities partners with to learn about the jobs they do.

Students also visit different colleges in the area.

Students can participate in work-based learning during the school day.

The Job Experience Training (JET) program allows students to work alongside a job coach and retail staff during a semester.

“They’re getting actual first job experiences, and they have the opportunity to build their resume,” Stephanie said.

Some students who already have an idea of what kind of job they want can participate in the Community Work Experience (CWE) program. Key Opportunities connects with an employer in the area to find students a paid job.

The program also offers summer work for pay through local municipalities for students interested in community beautification.

The Workforce Initiative and Opportunity Act Youth Program (WIOA) focuses on transitioning youth from high school to employment, secondary education, or the military.

Individuals can experience community work through this program. It also offers a summer work program.

“All of our in-house programs have the ultimate goal of preparing people to be independent in the community and obtain community work if they choose,” Programs Manager Stephanie Stockford said. “We feel very firmly about their choice here and support individuals in the dignity of their choice.”

Key Opportunities runs vehicle routes that take people to Key Opportunities in the morning and back in the afternoon. It also offers transit.

“For example, if we have a woman who wants to go to coffee once a week with her friends, we pick her up, her friend up, we drop them off for coffee, then we pick them back up and take them both home,” Operations Manager Brooke Lewis-Stiverson said. “We’ve taken people grocery shopping, but the majority of what we do is non-emergent medical transport.”

Key Opportunities is also working on building an adult independent living facility for people with disabilities.

In The Key is a liquidation store and part of Key Opportunities. People involved in Key Opportunities’ programs can be trained to work in retail at In The Key. In The Key sells new furniture, small kitchen appliances, bathroom items, clothing, and more at forty to fifty percent off retail prices.

People working in retail at In The Key either work at the storefront and handle checkout, stocking, and cleaning.

Others work in the back assembling Fortnite, sorting clothes, and preparing merchandise for the storefront.

It is located in the Key Opportunities building off of Montgomery Street in Hillsdale.

The most popular items the store sells are mystery boxes.

“We don’t know what’s in them, so it’s a surprise for everyone,” Programs Manager Stephanie Stockford said.

In The Key also has a loyalty program punch card. Customers can get a hole punch every time they spend $25 in the store. When they get ten punches, they can either receive $25 off their next purchase or a free mystery box.

The store reopened in February 2025. Before it closed during the Covid pandemic, it was a consignment store.

In The Key has recently done a Black Friday sale and will hold a Christmas in July sale this coming year.

“In The Key is by far the most popular of our in-house programs,” Stephanie said. “Everybody wants to work in the store.”

Cutting-Edge Hotel and Restaurant The Keefer House Hotel is poised to transform downtown Hillsdale with a cutting-edge hotel and restaurant dedicated to preserving its history.

That promise will be reflected in the way history and modernity coexist throughout the property. With 34 different guest rooms, the building’s 140 year story will be evident throughout.

The 1885 building—which once welcomed railway travelers and legendary figures such as Annie Oakley and “Buffalo Bill” Cody—will soon welcome a new generation of guests.

Following decades of vacancy, its return will signal a significant milestone for the city.

“Many historic features were preserved or recreated not only to respect the past but to celebrate what gives the Keefer its character and tie it to Hillsdale,” Brant explains. “Guests will notice the details from the wall to ceiling stamped tin in the public spaces or the lobby’s original mosaic tile all the way down to the guest room door trim and transoms.”

“The Keefer House Hotel will have a tremendous impact on the community and surrounding area,” explains Brant Cohen, senior development associate for the hotel’s ownership. “We believe this will be the go-to place for every occasion whether it is a casual weeknight out for a great meal or the perfect place for a rehearsal dinner where you know your wedding guests will be treated to an unforgettable stay.”

As construction enters its final stages, anticipation continues to grow for the hotel’s opening, which does not yet have a specific date.

“Our team is working tirelessly to complete the hotel and deliver a building the entire community will be proud of,” Brant says.

Brant says the hotel is hopeful the building will become more than just a hotel, but a gathering place for the whole community. A major part of that experience will unfold in the hotel’s restaurant, which is where locals and guests will be able to gather to enjoy a seasonal menu crafted with farm-to-table flavors.

“Our restaurant will focus on creative cuisine featuring local produce with seasonal rotations and chef specials,” Brant says.

This is just one of the hotel’s unique offerings, though.

“Our lobby will have a beautiful bar with casual seating throughout along with an outdoor green space for relaxation and private events,” Brant adds. “There will also be two retail storefronts attached to and partially accessible from within the Keefer. These will be leased to complementary businesses providing unique offerings and services for our guests and the community.”

The Gallery—the hotel’s flexible event and dining space—will offer additional seats for dining, private events and receptions, and meetings.

Brant says the Keefer House Hotel is excited to soon become a cornerstone of Hillsdale’s revitalization.

TECUMSEH Embrace the Cold!

Winter is settling in, but Downtown Tecumseh is gearing up to continue to make the season sparkle. For one weekend only, the city will transform into an open-air gallery as more than 45 ice sculptures line the streets. This Annual Ice Sculpture Festival will turn the downtown district into a frosty wonderland.

Everyone is invited to wander from block to block, taking in each carefully crafted piece of art carved from solid ice. No two sculptures are alike, and part of the fun is discovering the creativity that awaits around every corner.

The heart of the excitement will take place on Saturday, January 17, when the Dueling Carvers Competitions take center stage. At 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m., professional ice artists will face off at the corner of Chicago Boulevard and South Evans Street.

The challenge comes with a twist: the audience chooses the carving theme at the beginning of the event, then votes for the winner once the masterpieces are complete. Throughout the day, additional live demonstrations give spectators a behind-the-scenes look at the artistry and skill that bring these frozen figures to life.

For those who love a little adventure, there will also be a Downtown Scavenger Hunt that invites guests to explore the district in an interactive way. Participants can track down sculptures, visit local shops, and complete challenges for a chance to win a gift-card prize pack.

This event will run Friday, January 16, and Saturday, January 17, from 1 to 5 p.m., offering plenty of time to explore. It is free and open to the whole community.

A full map of sculpture locations and scavenger hunt instructions will be released closer to the event, so stay tuned and get ready to celebrate the season in Tecumseh.

Cultural History Brings Continued Tradition

For more than 150 years, the Croswell Opera House has stood as the heart of Adrian’s cultural life.

Founded in 1866, it is the oldest theater in Michigan and one of the longest continuously operating theaters in the nation. Named for former Michigan governor Charles M. Croswell, the theater has hosted legendary performers such as Edwin Booth, Maude Adams, and John Philip Sousa, along with historic figures including Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony.

Its legacy as a movie palace in the early 20th century still lives on, but when the Croswell faced decline in the 1960s, a group of dedicated citizens stepped in. They preserved the building and ushered in a new era of live performance.

Today, the 640-seat auditorium has been lovingly restored, maintaining its historic charm while supporting professional-caliber productions that draw audiences from across Michigan and the surrounding states. Its mission remains rooted in community: elevating the arts, connecting people of all ages, and providing a safe, inspiring environment for performers and patrons alike.

The Croswell Opera House will continue that tradition in 2026 and you have the chance to support it! Its first show of the year is Singin’ in the Rain. From January 31 to February 8, the theater will present its annual all-area high school musical, which features unforgettable songs and spectacular choreography.

Then, on February 13, Michigan’s own Kanin Wren will bring her celebrated Taylor Swift Experience to Adrian, complete with choreography, costume changes, and a full band. COLDWATER A Winter Festival!

Christmas might be over, but winter in Coldwater is far from finished.

As January winds down, families can look forward to one of the city’s most beloved traditions: the annual Coldwater Winter Festival. This free, family-friendly celebration is organized by the City of Coldwater and welcomes the entire community to enjoy a full day of classic winter fun.

Held in Heritage Park, this year’s Winter Festival will take place on Saturday, January 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The park will be buzzing with activity as visitors take part in everything from cardboard sled races to horse-drawn wagon rides.

Animal lovers can meet sled dogs, while craft enthusiasts will enjoy hands-on kids’ projects. Live wood-carving demonstrations, inflatables, hot cocoa, and toasty s’mores round out the lineup, ensuring there’s something for every age and interest.

Heritage Park is located at 1776 Heritage Dr. in Coldwater. Those with questions about the event can contact the Dr. Browne Recreation Center at (517) 278-8566 for more information.

Coldwater’s winter festivities don’t end there. The city will also host a charming Daddy-Daughter Dance at the Dearth Center on Saturday, February 7. This annual tradition gives fathers and father figures a special chance to create lasting memories with the young girls in their lives. Guests will enjoy dancing, photo opportunities, and light snacks throughout the evening.

Moms can look forward to their own moment with their sons a few weeks later. The Mother-Son Dance, scheduled for Saturday, March 14, offers a lively night out designed especially for families looking to celebrate together during the winter season.

Our 74th Annual “Tip-Up”--established in 1927--is our longest running event and a top favorite for those looking for some winter fun. Weather permitting, activities such as the Red Light Ride, the fishing contest, poker run, snowmobile racing, oval track racing, auction benefit, leg wrestling contest, bonfires, there is always something fun going on.

This year, Tip Up will take place Friday-Sunday, Feb 6-8, and is sponsored by the Devils & Round Lake Men’s Club. Be sure to check out the local shops for a little retail therapy and the restaurants and bars around the lake for the music and a fun line up.

The Devils Lake Water Sports Boat Show & Open House is February 21-March 1 and always gets everyone in the mood for spring and summer as you shop for the latest boat models. They have the largest selection of new and preowned boats and pontoons and a friendly staff to help you make the right choice.

See the Upper Peninsula’s frozen waterfalls When winter arrives, Michigan’s waterfalls transform from thundering spectacles to silent, icy sculptures frozen in time. There are more than 300 waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula for visitors to discover – or rediscover if they’ve only visited during the warmer months. Some require a beautiful hike through the forest like those at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Others are more accessible with viewing platforms like Bond Falls on the Keweenaw Peninsula and the famous Tahquamenon Falls in the eastern U.P. Explore the Eben Ice Caves Some of Michigan’s best hidden gems are off the beaten path and only appear during winter. Intrepid travelers can hike to the awe-inspiring Eben Ice Caves that occur in the Upper Peninsula’s Eben Junction near Marquette.

These ethereal structures form when snow melt runs over the cliffs and freezes into walls of ice, creating a winter fortress that will take your breath away. After parking your car, the hike is about .75 miles until you reach the ice caves. Due to ice forming at the base of the caves – as well as snow being packed down on the trail from hikers – ice cleats are recommended for the best footing during your adventure.
