The first day of trout season in Pennsylvania has been a long-time tradition. It’s a day shared by family and friends to celebrate something near and dear to their hearts. It is a day that many PA anglers dream about on cold winter nights. Chilly temperatures, rain, and even snow go hand in hand with the first cast of the year. So do the fishermen’s breakfasts, sharing time at camp or the cabin, and, of course, the stories of the big ones that got away. Trout fishermen, as a whole, are a pretty loyal bunch and, in most cases, are very conscientious about the waters they fish.

As I pen these words, the 8 a.m. kick-off time is less than 24 hours away. With all the recent rain this past week, the creeks and streams are high, and I wonder how many trout have made it to the Susquehanna River by now. I also wonder how our local lakes and dams have been affected for those fishing there.

The kick-off to trout season also provides a little economic boost to local restaurants, bait shops, and small busi-

nesses near fishing destinations. Not as much as in years past, but still important to these businesses in the turbulent economic world of today.

On a much bigger economic level, just imagine the money the state takes in from license sales. Yes, I know many of these sales will still occur later in the fishing season. However, the opening of trout season usually does mark the day many have purchased the adult license for $27.97 and the trout stamp for $14.97. That may seem a little costly to many, and I completely understand that Americans’ wallets are under attack on every purchase. This may even be a contributor to lower license sales. I will give the Pennsylvania State Fish and Boat Commission a little break as all of their costs have also increased.

A quick look at the numbers from a Ken Hunter article earlier in the year shows that there will be 3.2 million trout stocked in 129 lakes and 697 streams. With an additional 800,000 or more released into PA waters by Cooperative Nurseries. This includes over 70,000 trophy trout. That’s

a lot of fish. Pennsylvania has a mentored trout day for those 15 and under that is free as long as the adult mentoring has a valid fishing license and trout stamp that took place March 30th. This is a great way to get the next generation of fishing men and women involved and educated. They also have first shot at one of those trophy trout.

Ken made a great point that trout fishing in Pennsylvania is a little complicated, and the best thing to do is refer to your Pennsylvania Fishing Summary booklet to clarify things. Complete info can also be found online at fishandboat.com.

Just a few thoughts about taking a child out fishing for the first time, a young person who has not fished before, or maybe a more senior individual looking for a new hobby. They might not have the same ambition or willingness to be out in the cold or fight the high water and wind as you. Believe me, I understand how dedicated many fishermen are, but don’t make their first time out miserable. Remember, this is just a trial run for hopefully some fun.

My thoughts also don’t mean that it has

to be a perfect weather day to get out; if safe, a little weather adversity is a good fishing lesson to teach. It’s easy to tell by an icicle hanging off the end of the pole or the chattering of teeth it may be time to call it quits. The key to being a good mentor is that the person you are mentoring and hopefully educating wants to go with you the next time.

Personally, I think I’ll wait for a warm sunny day, a nice farm pond to fish, and my son Jimmy to mentor me. This includes him driving us to the spot so I can nap on the way home. Of course, bating my hook as I did for him when he was young. This also includes removing the hook if I’m lucky enough to catch anything. I always provided a snack and a cold beverage, which, of course, Jimmy can now do for me. I think I’ll request some ice-cold Miller Lites and venison jerky. Maybe on the way home I’ll even let him buy me dinner as I’m a big believer in and taught him to catch and release. Now that’s my idea of a great day of fishing.

On a more serious note, please make sure you leave nothing behind but the fish you didn’t catch. Leave the spot you’re fishing better than you found it, even if you pick up after someone else.

God Bless America.

Walk Your Way to Better Health

Is it 37° and threatening to snow while I write this? Yes. Does that mean I’m not making plans for spring? Absolutely not. My plan for spring? More walks.

As most of you know, I have two dogs. One very large rottweiler, Bulleit, and one little-legged basset hound, Booker. is spring, Booker and I will be getting our steps in.

Now, before you come for me, don’t worry, Bulleit gets plenty of good walkies — but that’s special time for him and Steve and I won’t get in the middle of their bro time.

So, Booker and I are going to head out and explore the neighborhood. See what we can see and nd what we can nd.

I am fortunate to live in a very walkable neighborhood, so it will be easy for Booker and me to hit the streets.

Booker has a luxating patella (that’s a wobbly kneecap) so we have to be careful about not walking him for too long, or on rough terrain, so the easy streets in my neighborhood will be the perfect way to get both him and I some much needed movement and exercise! e best treatment for his kneecap is to keep him moving so his weight stays down and keeps extra weight and pressure o his joint.

On average, 1 out of every 4 U.S. adults sits for longer than eight hours each day,

per research from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, which is no bueno for physical and mental health. Regular exercise improves mood, boosts energy and can even help you sleep better. Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy.

Improving cognitive and mental function. Physical activity keeps your mind sharp now and later. Studies show higher tness levels are linked to better attention, learning, working memory and problem solving. What’s more, a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows people who get the recommended amount of physical activity are less likely to develop depression.

If, like me, you haven’t been as active this winter as you should have been, walking is a great way to get back in the swing of things. And if you need a little nudge, make your walks a little more fun!

Adding more movement can bene t your body and mind in numerous ways, such as:

Lowering disease risk. Getting the recommended amount of physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate, 75 minutes of vigorous or a combination of those activities per week) is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression, according to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.

Increasing sunlight exposure. Outdoor exercise is an easy way to get moving and take in the sunlight, which can improve mood, boost immunity, and help you get some vitamin D. e economy is rough right now, and spending time outside is a no-cost option and has been shown to reduce stress, promote a sense of belonging and improve mood.

You might think of walking as a solo activity, but some company can make it even more pleasant. Get your family, or a friend to join you and make a whole thing of it!

Use your walk as a guilt-free opportunity to listen to a new audiobook or create a walking soundtrack of your favorite upbeat music.

Mix up your scenery. Taking new routes keeps your walks interesting and helps prevent boredom from traveling the same predictable path.

And of course — bring your furbaby! Dog parents are more likely to reach their tness goals than those without canine companions. According to the Journal of Physical Activity & Health, dog parents are 34% more likely to t in 150 minutes of walking a week than non-dog owners. Pets can also help lower stress, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar and boost your overall happiness and well-being.

Lycoming Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Helps to Mentor Youth Onto the Right Path of Life

Today, we live in a time of an increasingly large number of single-parent families. is sometimes causes children to feel they don’t have an adequate female or male authority gure to help mentor them through the di culties of being young in these times. is is where a program such as Lycoming Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northeastern Pennsylvania can have a positive impact.

Lycoming BBBS of NEPA is a youth mentoring program and is one of 11 counties in Northeastern PA. Big Brother and Big Sister have been consistent in Lycoming County for approximately eight years. Lycoming BBBS is unique in that it is also under Lycoming County Children and Youth. Being a part of Children and Youth has helped the program’s nancial stability as well as the fact they don’t have to rely solely on fundraising and can make their time more useful in recruitment and matches. e program continues to grow; however, there is always a

need for volunteers, especially males. ey currently have 48 matches and 42 children on the waitlist.

Lycoming BBBS currently has three di erent mentoring programs. e community program consists of matching volunteers with youth who spend their time together in the community. e second program is the Big’s in Blue program, which matches police, re ghters, Paramedics, military, or other rst responders with youth. ese matches can support the youth in their schools and spend time in the community. e last type of program they have is school site-based programs. ere is currently one in the South Williamsport School District and two separate groups in the East Lycoming School District. In the school’s sitebased programs, junior and senior high school students are matched with younger students who meet weekly at the school for facilitated activities. Each program’s purpose is to provide youth with a mentor who is a positive role model who will show interest in the youth and build meaningful, supportive relationships. O cials at

Lycoming BBBS know that youth who have positive mentors are less likely to skip school, engage in drug or alcohol use, have poor grades, or be involved with the juvenile system. They are more likely to be successful, graduate from high school, and have better self-esteem and an overall better outlook. The Bigs in Blue is a great program that fosters respect and trust for youth with law enforcement and other first responder relationships.

An excellent option for married couples or close friends is to mentor as a couple’s match. The program currently has couples that act as a mentoring partnership for a youth. This is great

for empty nesters of any age, busy spouses with active lifestyles, or close friends. This type of match has been very successful. If you are unsure about being a mentor alone, find a friend or convince your spouse, and the two of you can spend time with your Little together.

Volunteers usually gain as much from the mentoring experience as the youth, and who doesn’t want to be a kid again? It is very rewarding to build a relationship with a child in need and see the positive changes that come from having a stable role model. It is also rewarding to expose a child to something that he or

she would never experience. Being a Big is making memories that will last a lifetime.

Interested individuals wanting more information about BB/BS or applying to become a Big can do so at www. bbbsnepa.com.

The process of becoming a Big is simple. Once the online application is processed, a program specialist will meet with you to complete an interview. All Bigs must have background clearances completed. Once approved, a big will be matched with a little with compatible interests. Mentors are asked to give the youth a one-year commitment and spend a minimum of time with the little once every week to two weeks. Spending time with your Little can be as easy as going for a walk. One Little, who was recently interviewed, was asked if he could choose one thing he could do for a day and what it would be. His response was to see a train go by. The Program Specialists provide monthly support to help ensure match success.

Littles must be between 6 and 15 to be matched with a Big. However, once they have been matched, the match can continue until high school graduation. Many matches become lifelong relationships with the Big, who continue supporting the Little

well into adulthood. Other than the School Site Based program, Bigs must be at least 18 years of age to apply. One is never too old to mentor a child. In the School site-based program, high school juniors and seniors are matched with elementary and middle school students. It is not uncommon for these matches to transition to communitybased programming once the high school senior graduates from school if they desire to continue the match and remain in the local community.

Annually BBBS programs nationwide hold a fundraising event called Bowl for Kids’ Sake. This year’s “BFKS” event in Lycoming County will occur On April 27, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Faxon Bowling Lanes. Build your team of 4 to 6 bowlers. While there is no fee to bowl or enjoy the free pizza and drinks, officials ask for a team donation of $50. All money raised will go toward supporting their matches. For more information or to register your team, log onto www.bbbsnepa.org/bfks2024 or call 570-824-8756. This is a great opportunity to have some fun and get some exercise, all while supporting a good cause. If you would like more information about becoming a volunteer, call 570-433-3193 and speak with Wala Tilman or Mary Martin.

Show Me the Money-Words: Etymology for Tax Day

AAs you peruse this April 10 edition of Webb, you have less than a week to get your taxes done.

Now in case you need an excuse to procrastinate longer, Webb’s Weird Words herewith presents a short list of moneywords — in honor of the approaching April 15 deadline:

Most of our coins got their names from the fraction of a dollar they represent — as in, for example, quarter and halfdollar. Naturally that also covers cent — a shortening of the Latin centum (“hundred”), from which we get such terms as century, bicentennial, centimeter, centipede, percent and centurion (a Roman soldier in charge of 100 men).

Dime, with its root meaning “tenth,” is likewise related to decimal, decade, decibel and even decimate. (The latter, meaning “wipe out,” stems from a Roman method of punishment that involved executing one in every 10 rebels.)

Nickel and penny are not from this group of fraction-words, however.

Our current nickel is so called because it contains that element — though it’s mostly copper. According to the official website of U.S. Mint, nickel originally

meant “rascal” in German; it is shortened from kupfernickel, literally “false copper” — a term invented by miners because the cheaper element was often mistaken for its more valuable cousin.

The ancient origin of penny, on the other hand, is shrouded in obscurity, and no one knows where it came from — though many countries have a similar moneyword, including the old German pfenning and of course, the British penny (plural: pence). In fact, our common use of penny is a borrowing from England; the official designation (seen on the back of the coin): one cent.

As for the almighty dollar — I saved this for last because its etymology is more complex:

Essentially, it’s a respelling of the German thaler (pronounced with a hard “th,” as in Thomas); this in turn is related to the English word dale, meaning “valley.” No longer used much, it remains fairly visible in such place-names as Scarsdale, Riverdale, Lauderdale and Glendale. The weird origin of dollar was recently pointed out to me by my friend Steve Shope, a local businessman, Webb reader and — as it turns out — quite the expert in oddball etymologies.

Steve noted out that the “thaler”

was originally a German silver coin. Produced in a region of Bohemia called Joachimstal (“Joachim’s Valley”), it was then called a Joachimsthaler, which was later shortened and respelled to our familiar unit of paper currency. Steve then tied this to the well-known term Neanderthal, an ancient, extinct humanoid:

“In the late 19th century,” he wrote in an email, “we discovered the first fossilized human remains, also in the region of Bohemia. This was in a cave in the Neander Valley, or in that Germanic language … Neander Thal. This means that dollar and Neanderthal are connected.”

dollar — which he called “the first global currency.” Unlike our adapted coin, however, the Spanish dollar could easily be divided into eight — which is where we get the phrase pieces of eight, occasionally heard in pirate tales and films. These smaller segments were sometimes called “bits,” resulting in the oncecommon designation for our quarter: “two bits” (two eighths). And thus comes the phrase “shave and a haircut — two bits.”

I myself already knew some of this through another odd conjunction: Years ago, I noticed that several of my church’s favorite hymns were composed by the German theologian Joachim Neander. (His many tunes include “Wondrous King, All-Glorious,” “Open Now, Thy Gates of Beauty” and “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty.”) Though now somewhat obscure, he was once so widely known that the valley now called Neandertal had actually been named in his honor.

How weird is it that a Christian hymnist gave us the name of our most famous caveman?

As an interesting addendum, Mr. Shope observed that the U.S. originally based its monetary system on the Spanish silver

Steve and I would love to tell you that this was the first “bitcoin,” ha ha. However, that term for electronic currency comes instead from the computing word bit, meaning a unit of information. And this, in turn, is a blend of binary and digit Which I did not know till I wrote this column.

Now to get us back on task:

Tax is part of a large Latin and Greek word-group including taxonomy, tactic and taxi. (The latter is shortened from the fare-calculator called a taximeter.) Originally connoting “assessment, evaluation or handling,” tax is likely connected to tang-, meaning “touch” — from which we get tangible, tangent (line touching a circle) and even … tag!

Sadly, I’m pretty sure the IRS wants to do more than merely touch your money. So, get those receipts and 1040s together, and pitch in your two cents! If only.

Food insecurity can be defined as the lack of access to food of sufficient quantity or quality to meet a person’s basic nutritional needs. According to the Department of Agriculture, approximately 10.5% of all households in the United States were food insecure in 2020, which translates to 35 million Americans, including 10 million children. Add to that the COVID-19 pandemic, where 4% of households experienced extreme food insecurity in 2021, where meals were skipped, or consumption was limited because families couldn’t afford food.

In addition, not all demographic groups faired equally. Black and Hispanic families tend to experience food insecurity disproportionately when compared to white families. Single-parent households and households with children also experience hunger in greater numbers. This is largely due to a complex combination of socioeconomic factors, including location, race, and other factors.

There are also many unique challeng-

es when it comes to dealing with food insecurity between urban and rural locations. People living in both urban and local areas might both be experiencing food insecurity, but the barriers to obtaining nutritious food may differ. For example, people living in cities may live in a food desert, a location that offers little affordable, nutritious food, because supermarkets might not find their locations to be especially profitable. Those same people might also struggle with food swamps, which are typically urban areas with mostly fast food or corner stores as available food sources. People living in the countryside may struggle with some of these issues but may also deal with a lack of reliable transportation or must travel great distances to find food stores and struggle with fuel costs to shop on a regular basis. Low-wage jobs or lack of work in general may compound these issues for both groups.

A common misconception concerning the term “food insecure” is that all or most of the people who suffer

Fighting Food Insecurity Living

LIVING WELL

from it are both underfed and underweight, but that is not always the case.

As mentioned previously, poor nutrition can lead to weakened immune systems, which can translate into increased school absences. It can also affect brain development and even stunt physical growth. Expectant mothers who are not consuming adequate nutrition may have more complications with pregnancy and childbirth, including low birth weight and preterm delivery.

e missing piece to this puzzle is the lack of nutrition. Eating simply to feel full does little to strengthen muscles, bones, and the immune system, foster brain development or optimize any of the other complex systems of the human body. Food purchased by people experiencing food insecurity is o en low in nutrition and high in calories. Basically, inexpensive, processed food high in re ned carbohydrates, saturated and trans-fat, and low in ber, protein, vitamins, and minerals.

ese food choices are largely driven by price and, in fact, cost much more than money. Due to the abundance of processed food consumed by people experiencing food insecurity, chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and others are experienced at much higher rates than the rest of the population, making death from diet-related diseases the leading cause of deaths in the United States.

e e ects on children and pregnant women are even worse and can lead to life-long and even generational deciencies. Malnourished children underperform their well-fed classmates.

While there are many public and private organizations that are currently helping, much more work needs to be done. In Central Pennsylvania, the need is even greater than in much of the country, as it is largely rural and has high poverty rates. I encourage you to support your local food bank by making either a monetary or food donation. Another idea might be to connect with your local school district and o er nancial assistance to help any children who have outstanding school lunch fees. It seems almost absurd to think that in a country with so much abundance, people still go without healthy food, so rather than ignore the problem, let’s step up and help our neighbors. In a future article, I will list more speci c resources and ways to get involved in ghting food insecurity.

Plan to End Loafing and Illegal Car Riding

The Philadelphia and Reading company police in conjunction with local authorities are endeavoring to break up the practice of loa ng at the company’s station at Arch Street and illegal car riding. Already there have been at least 15 arrests of young men, and more are to follow, warrants have been issued for them.

e practice is mostly carried on by men aged 16 and upwards. ey congregate at the railroad station on Sunday a ernoons. On Monday a ernoon ve of these young men were taken into custody and taken before an alderman in the city and they were ned for loa ng. Later, other arrests followed, and some paid their nes while others went to jail.

While the loa ng is bad enough, the young men have added to it by practice of illegal car riding. is also occurs on Sunday a ernoon when the young men board a freight train just below the station and ride to downtown Williamsport, then return on another freight. is is indulged by scores of young men every Sunday a ernoon and it is this practice that the authorities wish to stop. e o enders are not all Newberry young men but include parties from Shamokin, West Milton and other points in that direction who come to Newberry on an excursion train and return later in the day. ese men have also been arrested on various occasions.

Last evening several men were arrested on warrants charged with loa ng and illegal car riding.

told her the Sticky Elbow. She replied, “Oh, the place with the sad face!” We were completely lost and had no idea what she was talking about until we pulled into the parking lot. On both signs, front and back of the building, was the look of a sad face. When we got to the table with our crew and told them, we all had a good laugh and thought it was so neat how she looks at things so di erently. Check it out next time you eat at the Sticky Elbow. You’ll look at it di erently now, too!

As we were driving that hot summer day, I was watching Kenz staring hard out the car window as we were driving by Wegmans up on the highway. She was focused and determined to nd this green lady. It wasn’t two minutes until I heard her yell and point, “ ere she is momma! ere is the green lady!”

ere she was along the highway, Starbucks!! A green lady right on the sign. She was right! It was the cutest thing. Kenzy has never been (nor have I) into any Starbucks, so it was not on my radar that it would ever be Starbucks!? I told her I didn’t think they even sold lunch stu there and that they specialized in co ee and drinks. It still and will always be the “green lady” now and not Starbucks.

But isn’t it amazing how kids see things so di erently than we can?

Walmart is also known as the sunshine store, per Kenzy, too, because the sign looks like a sun to her. I love looking through her eyes and seeing how she sees things.

I also wanted to apologize for last week’s recipe, “Fried Taters Sausage and Onions.” It was supposed to be “Fried Taters PEP-

PERS and Onions.”

ere is NO sausage in that recipe. You one hundred percent could add a pound of loose sausage or even cut up link sausage. I have another recipe with pretty much everything in this recipe, but I also add eggs and sausage and call it THE MESS. It looks a mess but tastes so good! I am so sorry about that mistake. I’ll put that recipe in my column soon! ey are very similar. But yes, it’s just a potato recipe—no added protein.

Styling Sneakers

As April unfolds, we are leaving o sweater weather and headed into sneaker season.

Sneakers have become more and more ubiquitous as athleisure, gorpcore (a fashion trend in which outerwear typically designed for outdoor recreation is worn as streetwear), and a more casual approach to dressing have emerged. Sportswear, in general, has become a modern sort of uniform, while sneakers are being worn with traditionally dressier garments like suits, trousers, and skirts. ere’s an interesting tension between performance and lifestyle when it comes to sneakers. You may have orthopedic needs or simply want a supportive shoe that still isn’t boring. ere are some very funky, graphic sneakers on the market that are practical in the sense you can walk in them but may not serve your true style needs. Here’s a rundown of how best to style sneakers this spring.

cropped trousers, a buttondown, and a sweater. Yes, above, I wrote that sweater weather was behind us, but a gray cardigan is seasonless and can still be necessary well into May. Black sneakers, especially of the slip-on variety, can easily double as basic black ats. I’ve been a fan of Vans classic slip-ons for years. You can pick them up in canvas, but I prefer them rendered in perforated leather, which tends to make them feel a little more chic. Or you can go a sportier route with an Adidas platform skate sneaker with laces and those classic three white stripes along the sides to coordinate with an overall black-and-white look of white ankle jeans, a black tee, and an oversized black sweater.

If you’re hesitant to don white jeans, which can be tricky to pull o in real life, you can still incorporate a crisp white into your spring look with Converse’s Chuck Taylors in all white. ese fresh kicks can be styled

romantically with a oral dress and denim jacket or functionally with cargo pants and a windbreaker. Puma’s Vikky women’s sneaker (currently on sale) has a bit more he than Chucks and pairs just as easily with standard sportswear, like track pants, as they do with more on-trend joggers.

If you’re interested in a bolder look, wear graphic tennis shoes like Nike’s Air Max 270 with a crew neck t-shirt, jeans, a moto jacket, and a red handbag. You can semi-match your bag to the version of this shoe with the orange heel or go for contrast with the neon green sole option. New Balance also o ers some fashion-forward kicks like their Calia Women’s 350 shoes in mint and pink. Not as bold as Nike, but just as statement-making when paired with lighter denim and a patterned top. Try Allbirds’ tree runners with a midi or maxi-length dress for something so er this spring. ese lightweight sneakers make a novelty-printed romantic dress like ModCloth’s Meet Me in Paradise Midi frock feel even more light and breezy and fashionably functional for the season. Or check out the boho maxis from Natural Life, any

of which feels springtime fresh with So Shoes’ Frayda slip-on. You can style these dress/sneaker looks with gold jewelry and a duster or keep it casual with a baseball cap and cropped denim jacket.

If you’re in the market for a dress look of a more tted variety, try a more bodycon silhouette with a hiking sneaker. Bodycon doesn’t necessarily mean va-va-voom so much as streamlined. Spanx’s AirEssentials Tank Midi dress gives you a more structured look that can transition from work to a night out, even when worn with Teva’s Geotrecca sneakers in cream. Quince’s Tencil Rib Knit Sleeveless dress walks the line between loungewear and outdoor style when paired with Timberland’s GreenStride Hiking shoe.

ese are just a few sneaker styling ideas to try this season. As the weather warms, you can pair your favorite kicks with trousers, shorts, and tank tops just as easily as you can with tennis skirts and polos. Just be sure, especially for lighter-shaded shoes, to keep them clean and scu -free for the ultimate in sneaker style.

WASD Secures

‘Best Communities for Music Education’ Designation for 22nd Year

Wmusic education.

is is the 22nd year that WASD has received the designation, which is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in e orts to provide music access and education to all students.

WASD is among only 975 school districts selected nation-wide.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, WASD answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community musicmaking programs.

“I’m incredibly proud and honored to witness our music program being recognized with this designation for over two decades now,” said Superintendent Dr. Timothy S. Bowers. “It truly re ects the exceptional dedication of our music educators who consistently deliver high-quality instruction. Congratulations to our music department!”

“We are honored to once again receive the designation of being one of the Best Communities for Music Education from e NAMM Foundation,” said Kristin

Takach, secondary curriculum director. “ is recognition highlights our district’s unwavering commitment to providing exceptional music education opportunities for all our students. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our educators, administrators and the entire community who support our music programs. We are proud to be among the select few nationwide to receive this recognition and will continue to prioritize the importance of music education in our district.”

e NAMM Foundation is a nonpro t supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its approximately 10,300 members around the world. e foundation advances active participation in music making across the lifespan by supporting scienti c research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs. Lycoming County Department of Public Safety Conducting Access and Functional Needs Survey to Aid In Emergency Responses

When responding to an emergency, timely, accurate, and important information can be critical to rst responders. at is the thinking behind an Access and Functional Needs Survey that the Lycoming County Department of Public Safety has developed.

e information gathered in the Access

and Functional Needs survey is being compiled in a registry, providing critical contact information to emergency response entities, such as the Lycoming County Department of Public Safety. is information will give rst responders and county emergency management sta the necessary methods and numbers to properly and e ectively contact residents in a crisis. is information will only be used in the event of an emergency or disaster

that requires the public to be noti ed of important information. Participation is voluntary.

e information provided will be used exclusively for emergency planning and response purposes. It will be securely stored in Lycoming County’s Geographic Information System (GIS) and linked to an assigned ID number to maintain your privacy. At the discretion of the Lycoming County Department of Public Safety, this

data may be shared with municipal and county emergency services as necessary.

“While we endeavor to utilize this information to enhance resident safety in emergencies, the Department cannot guarantee its use in every situation or its e ectiveness in providing emergency assistance,” Jon Mackey, Planning Specialist, Lycoming County Emergency Management Agency, Department of Public Safety, told Webb Weekly e Department of Public Safety contacted Roads to Freedom/Center for Independent Living to aid in the preparation of the survey.

is twofold. The survey will give first responders access to information about the person before being on scene. This information can be used to best serve the person during an emergency.

“For example, if medics are responding to a call for a possible heart attack, knowing how the person communicates would be beneficial. Does the person use American Sign Language (ASL), read lips, or use a communication device, etc.? Upon arrival, the responders now know they will need to use an alternative method to communicate with this person. If first responders are wearing a face mask, this

would create a barrier to effective communication. The information gathered from the survey would provide beneficial communication needs prior to emergency personnel arriving.”

She continued, “Another example is that medics are called to the home of a person that experiences Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). The flashing lights and loud sounds of the sirens may be something that triggers this individual. Knowing this in advance would allow responders to turn off the lights and sirens as they approached the location.

“The value of the survey extends beyond

an individual emergency. In the event of a large-scale disaster that impacted multiple residences, this information would be critical for a successful evacuation. If shelters were being employed for the evacuation, emergency management planners would be better prepared to ensure the shelter was equipped to support the needs of people who are at risk. Having adequate access to electricity to power durable medical equipment such as a ventilator or telehealth communication devices is critical.”

She added, “We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Penn College and Lycoming County EMA as we continue to promote inclusive, accessible communities.”

In a fortuitous development, RTFCIL was able to find an intern from Penn College, Kayla Webb, to help develop the survey questions and format. RTFCIL officials had been working with a Penn College professor, David Bjorkman, on another project. He is involved in teaching in the college’s Emergency Management training program and gave them Webb’s name.

Webb said she spent more than 100 hours researching other counties’ surveys, creating Lycoming County’s survey, and revising it until they reached a version that all parties and stakeholders agreed on.

Webb was asked how she arrived at the survey questions. “In emergency management, we use a Whole-Community Approach in which we turn to different communities to learn more about their needs. With that in mind, and with RTFCIL being my internship host, we decided

to create the survey based on the intake form they use when providing services to individuals,” said Webb.

She was asked what it meant to her to be involved in preparing the survey. “That is hard to put in words, but it really boils down to something simple. I had the opportunity to create something that would benefit not only individuals with disabilities or other functional and/or access needs but also every resident in the county. The need to help people runs deep in every emergency management individual, including me.”

She stated her expectations about the survey. “My expectations for the survey are high because surveys like this are found commonly across not only our state but across the nation. I hope that, in the end, the survey does what it sets out to do: to be a place where Lycoming County residents can provide information about themselves that they want first responders and emergency planners to know. Once again, this is the Whole Community Approach at work at the crux of it all. First Responders and planners can make assumptions based on generic information, but the only expert on you is you,” concluded Webb.

All those involved with the survey, including Lycoming County Public Safety officials, hope that the public fully participates and fills out the survey. It will benefit everyone.

If you are interested in participating in the survey, you can find it here: https:// forms.office.com/r/1iwB58aakx.

UPMC Expert: Does Your Lifestyle Affect Your Eyes?

We are all aware of the impact certain lifestyle choices — smoking, activity level, sleep — can have on our health and wellness, but do many of us consider how these decisions also affect our eye health? Our eyes are an essential organ, yet we often take them for granted. Your daily habits can affect your eye health a great deal and, without proper precautions and care, can lead to problems with your eyesight.

Lifestyle Choices That Affect the Eyes

tissues and structures. This process helps combat age-related eye issues such as cataracts and macular degeneration. While we sleep, our eyes are closed which bathes our eyes in cleansing and soothing tears, which helps nourish the eye tissue, and allows our eyes to rest and recover from daily activities that cause strain, such as staring at screens or reading, relieving dryness, redness, and discomfort.

From time to time, most of us make unhealthy lifestyle choices. Many people occasionally eat a fatty meal, skip a workout, or do not get enough sleep. But when unhealthy habits become the norm, it might be time to consider making some changes. Below are a few examples of unhealthy habits that can negatively affect eye health.

– Too much UV light or sunlight exposure: Overexposure to sunlight, especially unprotected, can increase your risk of developing certain eye diseases. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, exposure to UV rays from the sun can increase your risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, and skin cancer.

– Lack of sleep: During sleep, our body undergoes cellular repair and regeneration, which is vital for maintaining healthy eye

– Unhealthy diet: Being overweight can increase your risk of eye problems in a few ways. For instance, being overweight increases your risk of developing diabetes. People with diabetes carry a higher risk of vision loss from diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Obesity also raises your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, which may negatively affect vision.

– Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Tobacco smoke, including second-hand smoke, also causes dry eye. Smoking also raises the risk for cardiovascular diseases which can indirectly influence your eye health.

– Screen time: Screens are everywhere in our lives and while using screens won’t blind you, spending too many hours staring at a screen can cause uncomfortable symptoms and, over time, even damage your eyes or develop into computer vision syndrome.

EYES

This is especially concerning in children who can develop nearsightedness (myopia) or progression of nearsightedness from excessive screen use. Screens cause us to blink less often and the movement on the screen makes your eyes work harder to focus. Also, we typically do not position the screen at an ideal distance or angle, which can cause added strain.

Tips to Protect Your Eyes

There are easy steps you can take to adjust your lifestyle and reduce your risk of eye strain or damage, including:

– Wear sunglasses - Sunglasses with 100% UV protection are necessary protection from solar radiation and polarized lenses

reduce glare which causes eye strain and fatigue.

– Adjust lighting – Most screens have a brightness adjustment. Make sure that your screen isn’t brighter than the surrounding light, or your eyes will have to work harder to see. Adjust your room lighting or your screen lighting and increase the contrast on your screen to reduce eye strain.

– Give your eyes a break – When it comes to screens, the American Ophthalmological Society recommends using the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain. Take a break every 20 minutes by looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This gives your eyes a break and allows them to refocus.

– Keep eyes moist – Consider using artificial tears to lubricate your eyes when they feel dry.

– Get good sleep – Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. Establish a consistent sleep schedule, create a sleep-friendly environment that’s dark, cool, and quiet, and limit screen time before bed which promotes relaxation and allows the eyes to adjust before sleep.

– Get active and eat healthily – Many studies have shown that exercise, moderate activity for 30 minutes a day, and a diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables can protect against blinding eye diseases, such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Eating a diet rich in plant-based foods and low in saturated or animal fats is best for healthy eyes.

– Yearly eye exam – Get a yearly eye exam so your ophthalmologist or optometrist can check your eye health and determine if any chronic eye conditions are developing.

If you’re concerned about your eyesight or are experiencing symptoms, an ophthalmologist or optometrist can evaluate to assess your overall eye health. If you have questions about managing a healthy lifestyle, talk to your primary care provider for support in a personalized approach to better health.

But the film rests largely on Dell’Anna’s sturdy shoulders; she exemplifies both Cabrini’s quiet dignity and her irresistible doggedness in overcoming mainly male

opposition at the Vatican — as well as in New York City government, the American clergy and the Italian senate.

The film’s other triumph is how great it looks. Cabrini was filmed partly in Rome, with Buffalo and Niagara Falls standing in for New York through most of the American scenes. Since the setting is well over 100 years ago, much computer work was needed to make this happen, and it looks seamless — complemented by superior costumes and stunning cinematography. Several scenes look like paintings — even some set in seamy slums and sewers.

At nearly two and a half hours, the overlong film might have benefited from some judicious editing. Nonetheless, its Rotten Tomatoes rating stands at a solid 91 with critics — and an even more glowing 98 with

audiences.

It manages this twin feat by being — like other Angel works such as TV’s The Chosen — patently faith-based, yet at the same time pressing firmly on the cultural hot-buttons of immigration and female empowerment.

To put it bluntly, it seems deliberately (and successfully) designed to appeal to both liberals and conservatives.

Yet for earnest Christian viewers, there is not much here about the One whose death and resurrection (so recently honored in Webb’s Easter issue) makes possible all this very good work.

Indeed, the film misses a huge opportunity when Vittoria, racked with guilt over a recent death, declares, “There’s not enough blood in the world to make me clean.” I dare say the real Mother Cabrini might have pointed out

that there is actually a different sort of blood — one from a divine source — that fully addresses this very problem. Instead, we get a brief encomium on strong women.

Yet at the same time, with so many privileged men in the film objecting to the kind of people Cabrini works with, the movie is a potent reminder that sin, sickness and penury mark key battlegrounds for the church’s work.

Rod Barr’s excellent dialog highlights this, along with Cabrini’s astonishing fortitude — which, among other things, involved wrestling with lifelong physical debility. Challenged early on about her frailty, the courageous Mother replies quite simply: “We can serve our weakness, or we can serve our purpose.”

Cabrini shows that she served it very well indeed.

County Hall Corner: It’s Time for America to Grow Up

Iwonder if we are living in a fantasy world rather than a real one. A good example would be from the 1971 lm

“Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” which featured a little spoiled brat named Veruca Salt. She ‘found’ her golden ticket to visit the factory because her father bought hundreds of thousands of Wonka bars to get it for her. en, when she and the other four children and their relatives went into the Wonka Chocolate Factory, they discovered that the entire facility was run by orange-skinned, greenhaired little people known as the OompaLoompas. Veruca was enamored by them and demanded from her very rich father, “Daddy, I WANT an Oompa-Loompa, and I want one NOW!”

We are living amid a lot of Verucas these days. Consider the terminology that we have used for giving money to United States citizens and noncitizens alike. In my lifetime, I have seen it rst identi ed as “assistance,” then it was considered as “bene ts,” then it became “entitlements,” and now we are in an age of “reparations.” California studied reparations for over a year with many hearings and committees. It concluded that all those who could trace their heritage back to slavery days deserved reparations of up to $5 million

each. e great joy in California over this groundbreaking initiative came to a crashing halt when that nasty thing called Reality revealed that to actually initiate this would cost California’s entire state budget — THREE TIMES OVER!

Beyond money, it seems that a vast number of individuals in our society seek signi cance, and that requires recognition. And those who are in the category of having done nothing that could be considered noteworthy in their entire life must go the route of being “triggered,” “o ended,” or “marginalized” to get attention. An example of this comes from the New York Post on Easter Sunday, no less. “Fire Department brass ordered an East Village ladder company to remove its ‘red line’ American ag honoring the squad’s six brothers killed on 9/11 – a er a

neighborhood resident complained it was ‘fascist’ and a local le y pol questioned whether it was a ‘politically charged symbol.’”

Let’s get this straight now. Here is a re company in New York City that su ered the horrible loss of six of its members as a result of responding to the 9/11 attacks and decided to honor these heroes by a very small gesture of making the blue bar on their in Blue Line American ag become a red bar as a symbol of mourning. at simple and beautiful act speaks volumes of respect, dignity, and honor to those who literally gave their lives to save others.

But hold on now, there is a problem here. is honorable ag o ends one woman as she sees it as a symbol of Nazi Germany, and a low-level government o cial who needs his een seconds of fame views it as a political symbol. Really? In the real world that the rest of us live in, we recognize that these re ghters are standing by every single day to respond to an emergency, and that ag is a reminder that it may even cost them their lives in doing it. ese two traumatized social warriors and others just like them need to grow up, sit down, and get over it!

Truth be told unless we stand strong in the midst of this childish mentality of Veruca Salts everywhere we turn, our society is genuinely doomed. is is why I believe we should celebrate and show honor on our holidays highlighting our nation’s freedom and sacri ce, such as Memorial

Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and 9/11 Patriot Day. is only happens if we take the time to know why these are important and how they impact our country. We owe a tremendous debt to those in the past who secured our nation.

An opportunity in this regard is coming up soon. As president of the Montgomery Area Historical Society board, I want to o er the general public a bus trip to the Flight 93 Memorial National Memorial outside Shanksville, PA, on Saturday, June 14th. is site is very special as it represents the only symbol of resistance against the 9/11 terrorists. ose passengers were real heroes who de ed the terrorists at the cost of their lives and thwarted the attack that was believed to be plotted for the US Capitol or the White House.

e bus will depart from the US Post O ce in Montgomery at 7:30 a.m. with an estimated return time of 7:00 p.m. e cost is $75/person, including a tour guide, a light luncheon, and gratuities. Payment may be sent to the Montgomery Area Historical Society, 3 W. Houston Avenue, Montgomery, PA 17752. e deadline is on Wednesday, May 22nd.

My lovely wife Debbie and I will also be on this journey on June 14th. I have talked to several folks who have been to this memorial site, and everyone has shared that it is well worth the trip. So, as Todd Beamer’s last words were heard that day on Flight 93,” Are you guys ready? Okay. Let’s roll.”

These are just some of the 16 musicals on the program at the Repasz Band’s spring concert — slated for 7:30 p.m. on April 16 at Williamsport’s Community Arts Center.

Entitled “Musical Memories,” the free concert offers more than a dozen tunes — many of them medleys — honoring Broadway musicals from such composers as Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mitch Leigh, John Philip Sousa, and Leonard Bernstein.

Indeed, Bernstein — subject of the 2023 Bradley Cooper film “Maestro,” which was nominated for seven Academy Awards — is represented no less than four times on the program.

These include “Danzon” (from the show “Fancy Free”) and “Overture to Candide,” along with two tunes from “West Side Story”: “Somewhere” and “Gee, Officer Krupke”

“Bernstein was an incredible influence on American music, education, theater

Lentz also conducts medleys from “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Man of La Mancha,” including such popular songs as “Tradition,” “To Life,” “Dulcinea” and “The Impossible Dream.”

“These arrangements take exciting and memorable musical highlights,” Lentz adds, “and move the concert-goer on a whirlwind journey through each show in a matter of minutes!”

Regarding the overall selection for this particular concert, Repasz conductor Jeff Dent explains, “Some of the works are not truly Broadway musicals, but they represent predecessors of shows that followed.”

Dent, who will lead the band through “Somewhere,” “Krupke” and Sousa’s “El Capitan” — along with the opening national anthem and traditional finale, “Repasz Band March” — points out that operettas and ballets are likewise represented.

Indeed, while Sousa is generally known for marches like “El Capitan,” that particular piece is actually from a Sousa operetta of the same name.

“Many of the shows included are award-winners,” adds Dent, “from Tonys and also Grammys to Golden Globes and the Oscars.”

That, of course, includes “West Side Story,” which won a whopping 10 Academy Awards for 1961, including Picture, Screenplay, Director and (naturally) Best Music.

The mid-April concert program is rounded out by assistant conductor Jessica Lewis, who takes the baton for selections from “Annie” and Webber, along with an “Opening Night” medley including “Springtime for Hitler” and “Circle of Life,” plus Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.”

The evening will likewise include pre-

sentation of the Repasz Band Senior Awards — given annually to one senior from each high school in Lycoming County. Winners will join the band onstage to play along with the concluding “Repasz Band March.”

The band’s summer schedule currently runs as follows:

June 9 at the 67th annual Ways Garden Art Show, 1:30 p.m.; Flag Day (June 14) at Penn College, 6 p.m.; June 18 at the Williamsport Home, 6:30 p.m.; June 25 at WeCare in Loyalsock, 6 p.m.; July 4 in Eagles Mere, 5 p.m.; and Little League’s annual Grand Slam Parade on Aug. 13. All concerts are free.

The excitement is building, and in less than three weeks, the one-day Youth Hunt for Spring Gobblers will occur — Saturday, April 27, 2024, to be exact. It is a day that many young hunters and their adult mentors have been looking forward to for months. It is held one week prior to the opening of the regular statewide spring gobbler season in order to give the new and young hunters a slight edge at success rather than wait until the throngs of spring hunters enter the woods. Even though the big day is almost upon us, there are still several things to do to prepare for the hunt. The limit is one bird, and it must be bearded, which means it could be a young Jake with a short beard or an old Tom with a long beard. Even a bearded hen is legal; however, bearded hens do nest and raise broods, so it might be advisable to pass up a bearded hen. The hunting hours begin one-half hour before sunrise and end at noon. Hunters should be out of the woods by 1 p.m.

Only licensed junior hunters and properly permitted mentored youth (16 and under) may participate and must be accompanied by an adult as required by law (see License information section of the current Pennsylvania Hunting and Trapping Digest). Birds taken by mentored youth under age seven must be tagged with a harvest tag transferred to the mentored youth from his or her adult

mentor. Remember that dogs may not be used during this season, and hunting should be done by calling only — stalking is not permitted.

Wearing fluorescent orange is not a requirement during this spring gobbler season. However, it is recommended that while moving, a hunter wear a fluorescent hat and/ or vest. Once in a stationary position or in a blind, it is advisable to display a banner of fluorescent orange within 15 feet of your location.

The use of a blind is highly recommended, depending on the age and activity level of the young hunter you are taking. We all know how fidgety a young person can be, and the blind will hide any extra movement that a new or young hunter will be engaged in when they become restless. The blind will also mask any activity by the hunters as they talk (whisper) about the morning’s activities. While the day of the Youth Spring Gobbler Hunt is really only several hours long, you might consider allowing youth to bring along a game that will occupy their time during any lull in activity. Otherwise, you may be bombarded with questions and talking throughout most of the morning!

Depending on the age and physical makeup of the youth, you need to think about what shotgun would be appropriate for the occasion. Grandpa’s old 12 gauge double-barreled shotgun will, no doubt, be too much for a new hunter who has little experience in shooting

a shotgun. A wise alternative just may be a semi-automatic shotgun since much of the recoil is taken up in operating the action of the gun — thus, the “felt recoil” is much less. Another good option is to allow the young hunter to use a 20-gauge shotgun. This gun will operate just like a 12 gauge, with a lot less recoil. Here, too, a semi-auto will produce noticeably less recoil than a pump, single-barrel or double-barreled shotgun. The ammunition that is produced today for the 20 gauge that is used for turkey hunting is highly effective, and you should not hesitate to consider this option, especially if the youth’s size and stature warrant it. Today’s TSS (Tungsten Super Shot) ammunition provides much better penetration and pellet density than older lead shot, thus making the 20 gauge and even the .410 gauge an extremely good choice for a

young hunter. Yes, TSS ammunition is pricey; however, it is much more deadly than previous turkey loads.

We should recognize that introducing young hunters to our sport is critical for the long-term survival of the outdoor activities that we have grown to cherish over the years. It is a great bonding experience and a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together when you take advantag e of this one-day Youth Hunt with an eager-to-learn youth. This day together in the spring turkey woods can be a very important one in laying the foundation for passing on our hunting tradition.

Safety is paramount, so remember to emphasize to a new or young hunter to always positively identify the target and the area around and beyond.

As I sat down to write this piece, the streams were running high and muddy from the past few days of rain. I suspect that by the opening day of trout season, there will still be some high, discolored water. Of course, those who were on the streams on opening day will be able to con rm my suspicions. High water isn’t all bad, but muddy or discolored water can make for some more di cult shing success.

When I survey those early days of trout shing, if I suspect that high, muddy water will be a problem, I consider some alternatives.

For starters, if rain has produced discolored and higher water levels, I tend to migrate to the smaller streams where the e ects of heavy rains will dissipate more quickly. e smaller mountain streams are also not as likely to get as muddy as the larger streams since the mountain streams are usually surrounded by wooded forests.

high- owing, discolored water, you may still be able to take some trout, but you may want to alter your approach.

I would tend to concentrate my casting along nearby undercut banks and out of the way of the heavy, fast-moving currents. Trout will o en move into more stable water along undercut banks or behind large rocks closer to the edges of the stream.

If I’m going to cast out into the more open moving water, I tend to work the edges of the fast current and with enough weight to get my presentation near the bottom. I would also tend to go with more colorful presentations.

Certainly, ashy in-line spinners will still produce, and bright pink, yellow, or chartreuse baits will likely get some attention.

If I’m y shing, I tend to go with something like a bright-colored mop- y with a gold bead head. I’ll add several split shots to get down near the bottom and work the edges near undercut banks. Bright-colored egg patterns have also been produced for me under those discolored water conditions.

Many of our larger trout streams will have plowed elds along the way, and highways will drain muddy water into our favorite shing holes.

If you nd yourself shing the

not lost — there are other alternatives. You can hit a local lake that’s stocked with trout; lakes are usually slower to show the e ects of heavy rains, and sometimes they are not a ected at all.

I personally don’t care much for trout shing in lakes, but I’ll still head to a lake if I nd the streams less attractive —it’s not trout that I’m a er but rather the crappies and maybe some perch or bluegills.

It’s not much of an adjustment to go from trout to crappies since the same ultralight spinning tackle is what’s needed. About the only thing di erent is what’s at the business end, and for the crappies, I tend to go with a one-sixteenth or

one-thirty-second once jig head tipped with a so plastic grub about an inch and a half long. White is a good all-around approach, but I will use brighter colors in discolored water. I’ve shed for crappies with this rig on a lake when I picked up several trout, as well — it works for both.

By the way, if you do end up substituting a day on the lake for crappies instead of a trout stream, you have the added bonus of some great eating sh. I know you can eat trout, but I much prefer crappies and pan sh to trout. Crappie llets dipped in egg batter, rolled in cracker mill, and fried to a golden brown sure helps you forget about not being able to sh in the high, muddy streams.

A1960’s advertising slogan for Virginia Slims cigarettes, “You’ve come a long way, baby,” was intended to target women consumers. Although the product is still on the market, that slogan may be a more apropos description of the NCAA’s women’s national basketball tournament, which concluded the sport’s most successful season this past Sunday.

Due to press deadlines, this column was written before last weekend’s NCAA Women’s Final Four. Nevertheless, not knowing the eventual champion crowned the hoop quartet of undefeated South Carolina, North Carolina State, UConn, and Iowa, which featured the most talked about and anticipated finals in the sport’s history.

Prior to the commencement of the 2023/24 women’s season, a column in this space (October 25, 2023) highlighted the growing interest Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes would have in the college game. The forecast rang true as Clark’s magnificent record-breaking season resulted in sold-out arenas everywhere Iowa played, and media ratings soared. While Clark was the catalyst, the growing interest in women’s basketball included Dawn Staley’s undefeated South Carolina

Gamecocks, UConn’s multi-talented Paige Bueckers, USC’s freshman scoring sensation Juju Watkins, and the polarizing and talented LSU star Angel Reese. In the days leading up to the Final Four, there seemed to be more conversation about the women’s finals than the men’s.

Begun in 1982, the NCAA’s women’s tournament featured some outstanding players and heralded coaches, but many of its championship games saw lopsided scores with Geno Auriemma’s Lady Huskies, the leading bully on the block.

Under Auriemma, UConn had won 11 national championships, including four consecutive titles from 2013-2016. This year was the fifth time both UConn’s men’s and women’s teams reached the Final Four in the same season.

But among the game’s growing list of emerging stars, it was Clark’s presence that packed the stands and broke a multitude of records, including the all-time scoring mark, 3-point career mark, and tying the record of 9 3-point field goals in a tournament game. She constantly recorded double-doubles and assist marks. She has announced her intentions to enter the WNBA Draft and forego her final year of college eligibility.

Future opponents of the Hawkeyes wel-

comed that decision. Perhaps not more succinctly stated than by Kim Mulkey, the controversial coach of LSU. In the handshake line following Iowa’s 94-87 win (TV’s highest-rated women’s game ever) over the Tigers, Mulkey told Clark: “I’m sure glad you’re leaving. Girl, you’re something else. Never seen anything like it!”

While Clark has stated she wants to be a member of USA’s women’s team in the summer Olympics, she will surely be the number one pick of the Indiana Fever in the upcoming WNBA Draft. Financially, she’ll do well, but her professional salary may take a while to surpass the NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) earnings she has accrued while at Iowa.

The much-talked-about NIL deals have opened opportunities for college athletes, allowing them to earn money based on their personal brand and popularity. Clark has been making waves, with her NIL valuation surpassing an impressive $3.1 million. She has secured several lucrative marketing deals, including State Farm, Nike, and Gatorade endorsements.

LSU’s Reese’s NIL earnings nearly equals Clark, while teammate Flau’jae Johnson also tops the $1.1 million mark. Bueckers, expected to return for her final season at UConn, will likely see her NIL soar past her current earnings of $652,000.

According to the WNBA collective bargaining agreement, Clark would earn a rookie salary of $76,535 in 2024 if she is selected with one of the first four picks. This number rises slightly to $78,066 in

2025 and again increases to $85,873 in 2026. Clark projects to land a four-year $338,056 contract in the WNBA when factoring in the base money. Money earned by Clark for outside endorsement deals would be in addition to her player’s salary.

For comparison, the minimum NBA salary for the current 2023-24 season is $1.1 million.

While both the WNBA and NBA are professional basketball leagues, there are significant differences in financial compensation. The average salary for a WNBA player during the 2023 season was $147,745. In the NBA, the average salary is around $8.32 million. The highest-paid WNBA players are Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm), Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas Wings), and Kahleah Cooper (Phoenix Mercury), all making $241,984. Steph Curry (Golden State Warriors) is the NBA’s highest-paid player, earning $51,915,615 this season, equaling $586,219 per game.

This stark contrast in earnings reflects broader societal disparities. NBA players benefit from more lucrative TV deals, sponsorships, and endorsements. To date, WNBA players face financial challenges due to lower revenue streams and less media exposure.

While college opponents are happy to see Clark move on, the WNBA will welcome her with open arms. Forget Virginia Slims. Thanks to Caitlin Clark, women’s basketball has truly “come a long way, baby”!

Warriors That Golf

Lycoming College has a golf team. Yes. We still get a few strange looks. Whether it is walking across campus with our clubs. Or when we pull up to a McDonalds in our matching outfits. This is my second stint with the Warriors. I mentored the team from 2001 to 2016. I got out of the business due to my midlife crisis. The job opened back up, and I was very interested. I retired from hoops a few years ago. It left me with a void. Coaching and interacting with youngsters are still very important. Sign me up. This is my 18th season, and I believe I am eligible for the West Branch Hall of Fame.

Coaching Division 3 golf is simply fantastic. There are so many perks and very few distractions. No drama with this team, and there are zero expectations. No disgruntled parents. No behind-the-scenes experts. No pressure. This is the best parttime gig in North America. I love all the guys on my roster. Everyone is so different. Would I like them to make more putts? Absolutely. But they are great kids, and I enjoy the camaraderie. I enjoy the interactions on the course and, especially, in the van. These guys are stupendous. I still marvel at the game, but I play very little. I will tee it up in a few scrambles and perhaps an occasional better ball of partners. Golf takes time. It is an expensive sport. I would rather fish. But now that I am spending more time with my boys. I

am starting to get the itch. I actually played some holes just for fun the other day. Say what? Yes. I carried my bag. We are so blessed to play and practice at Williamsport Country Club. They are so nice.

The early spring hasn’t been ideal, but we have already carded several rounds. The Warriors had a decent showing at Lebanon Valley. We finished in the top 15 — no need to ask out of how many teams.

The boys and I traveled to Penn State University for a two-day event with some of the best. Incredible tournament, and we got to play both the White and Blue Courses. Our guys golfed well on Friday. Freshman Phenom Will Eberz shot an 8 over par 79 to help us post a first-round score of 343. Our best tally in 17 years. Yes. I am not kidding. Our SID keeps track. We had two others shoot in the 80s. Frosh Mikey Fry from Muncy carded an 84, and my man, Sophomore Dylan Seck, posted an 88. Great stuff.

Day 2 was a different story. Perhaps we should have stayed home. The cold wind and rains prevailed. The golf course won. I am super proud of Will. He posted a second-round 80 to finish 34th overall in a rather large field. Impressive golf. You wouldn’t believe the scores. Franklin and Marshall were 6 over par as a team. Dude? Please remember that we are playing the back tees under some brutal conditions — 450-yard par 4s into the wind.

Ian Plankenhorn is now a senior. My man is also an all-conference placekicker. The Montoursville native had a great season with the football team. My man is still winning awards. He even flew out to Nevada for an XFL tryout.

Ian outperformed several D1 kickers. Laces out.

Ian golfed well at PSU. He will be that wildcard for us down the stretch.

Austin Loe and I go way back. The 6’7 outside sniper retired from playing hoops. Austin is raw, but I enjoy having him around. He is currently in the G League. But his time is coming.

Dylan Seck is a sophomore from Sayre, PA. He is young and super talented. Dylan is in the scholars’ program and is EMT certified. Yes. When most kids are playing SEGA, he is out there saving lives. What an impressive young lad. His resume is quite splendid. I love Dylan’s persona. He is quite the storyteller. Dylan keeps us in the loop and keeps us safe if there is a mishap. The trunk of his car is outstanding. Dylan has a set of clubs, a fancy med kit, and a $3K defibrillator. You can’t make it up. I am hoping there is room for a photo.

Kyle Davis is a strong sophomore from up north. He is relatively new to golf. Kyle has a great smile, and he loves the outdoors.

Kyle is getting better with each round. Oh, he almost killed someone with an errant

tee ball. It’s cool. The young man from Swarthmore ducked.

Will and Mikey make me look good. The two freshmen were actually my recruits. Will Eberz is from Stroudsburg. He is already a very solid player. Eberz has a chance to be Lycoming’s best ever. Mikey Fry played a little basketball at Muncy. He has only played for a few years, but he is super. Mikey is a grinder. He is selftaught, and the kid is already something. Ross Eyer, like Ian, plays some football. Ross is one of the most decorated athletes from the area. A three-sport star at Muncy. I am thankful that he listened to Mom and came to Lycoming. He is doing quite well on the gridiron. The tall and lanky frosh had 16 catches and, 196 yards and two touchdowns. Ross is another newbie to golf. He hits it a long way, and I dig his style. All of my guys are fantastic students. They make me look good.

Next up is a trip to Huntsville. Another beautiful golf course. Brr. The forecast is calling for 40 degrees with some flurries. My guys will give it their best. They always do. I will bundle up and offer some advice. My guys usually pass. I am still cool, but man, I am getting older. The van rides are hysterical. I enjoy the friendly banter. I really love getting to know more about my boys each outing. Exceptional kids. From all walks of life. They are my little brothers that I never had. They lost plenty of #warriorgolf balls. We may not be a contender, but we are having some major fun. Thanks to my players for keeping me young. Go Warriors. Cheers.
