As I watch what’s being spun on TV, I can’t believe the hosts of an ABC morning show want me to believe that they’re knowledgeable and will help educate the American people on what’s really going on in the world. They might as well follow that up with if they don’t, David Muir will on the evening news.

With where ABC/Disney/ESPN have taken their beyond-liberal agenda, there is no way they can honestly report and educate the American people on the realities of the world we’re currently living in. This conglomeration has taken sports coverage to a place where almost every broadcast includes social and political issues. I, like most Americans, just want to enjoy a ball game.

I have always believed in equality, equity, and honesty. The best player or person for the job. Standing up for those who are discriminated against or not rewarded for their value and hard work.

In one of my columns on the World Cup women’s team, I stated they should be as equally compensated as the men’s soccer team in the USA because, at the time, they were World Cup Champions. Their viewership far exceeded the men’s soccer team, as they were not very good.

And this is where compensation and salary levels must be kept based upon success and revenue created. In the same breath, there is no way WNBA athletes should be compensated like their NBA counterparts. If the women’s game continues to grow to the point where the financial statements are equal, then they absolutely deserve the same. But simply compare attendance, merchandising, and viewership to see the reality.

I have gotten a little off my intended path here, like I often do, but I think this example is relevant to what I’m about to say.

The way sports are being presented by ABC/ESPN turns many Americans off from watching whatever the event is. The inclusive use of social agenda and political views upset the true sports fans, and they lose them.

The best way to promote athletes is through the coverage and education of the game they’re playing. The best players will rise to the top and be rewarded for their hard work and effort. And if the sport is popular, the growing fan base will encourage more media coverage and revenue dollars.

I continue to be amazed by how much improved women athletes and the games they play have become.

Caitlyn Clark just set the NCAA scoring record for women’s basketball. She is an unbelievable player for whom the whole state of Iowa cheers. She is closing in on Pistol Pete Maravich and the all-time NCAA mark of 3,667. The NBA’s Steph Curry and WNBA’s Sabrina Ionescu’s recent 3-point shootout shows just how good the ladies’ talent level is. Curry, the best shooter in the world, beat his female challenger by just one shot.

Again, I am a huge fan of sports, especially when I witness pure excellence created by hard work and the word that not everybody has — heart. This shines through no matter the game, and I love watching!

Just to be completely honest, though, sometimes when I watch women’s sporting events, especially the WNBA, the TV coverage seems to want to alienate me. I surmise because I don’t fit the viewership they believe is watching or who they want to watch.

I will not stop watching if it’s an event I want to view. However, many will just turn it off. This is counterproductive for so many reasons. This is an example of a lost opportunity by the major networks that seem to be fueled by a political narrative that must be stated.

Sports are one of the most powerful ways to unify people. Whether it’s the local high school or athletic events held within

a local area. This extends right up to the college and professional ranks, which have the power to bring people together on a national level. When a team is winning and successful, no one asks what political affiliation the fan sitting next to him is. The quarterback isn’t wondering if the center in front of him is a Democrat or Republican.

Players, coaches, and the fan base are united over a common goal. And I should probably even add that when the team loses, the unity often doesn’t waver .

So, why have we reached the point when so many televised sports have a political narrative? Simple. Power and money. Sports have become a tool for those who have it, those who want it, and those who want to keep it.

I’ll finish this week’s column with this: I hope the opportunities for more girls and women to be involved in athletics continues to grow. As always, I believe there’s never been more of a need for women coaches. But if they’re the most qualified and want to be an NFL referee I hope they run down their dream.

On the competition side of things, I hope all of the opportunities created are filled by girls and women. The continued growth and development of female sports have been accomplished by the ladies who have come before them. Future successes, whether it be a gold medal or the opportunity to earn a living, should always be accomplished and earned by women. Go get ’em, ladies.

God Bless America.

From the Editor…

It’s a Leap Year!

2024 is a Leap Year. But the real question is, why? Why do we add an extra day to February once every four years?

To be honest, I didn’t really know. So, to the internet, we go!

According to National Geographic Kids (because it’s early in the morning, I haven’t had much co ee, and we need to keep it simple), Leap days are important because they help our calendar match up with the same seasons every year. Human-made calendars generally have 365 days; the solar year in uencing seasons is about 365.2422 days long. (A solar year is how long it takes the Earth to revolve around the sun.)

Even though .2422 of a day doesn’t sound like much, ignoring that fraction means eventually, our seasons won’t fall in the same months every year. School years might subsequently start in the spring instead of late summer. And if the calendar didn’t match the seasons, farmers would have a more di cult time growing crops, which could a ect food supplies.

at’s why, in the 16th century, the Gregorian calendar — the most

commonly used today — started adding leap days to match the calendar with the seasons. Because four .2422 days equals about one day, February 29 is now added to most years that are divisible by four. Many cultures tried making calendars but never quite got it right.

365.25 and 365.2422 made each calendar year about 11 minutes shorter than the seasonal calendar, so the calendar was an entire day short every 128 years. By the 16th century, signi cant dates and holidays had dri ed by ten days. Pope Gregory XIII unveiled his Gregorian calendar in Rome in 1582. at year, he dropped ten days from October to sync things up. He also developed a new leap year system that used the solar year of 365.2422 days, added one leap day every four years, but dropped three leap days every 400 years to keep the calendars from dri ing.

To x his culture’s calendar, Roman emperor Julius Caesar created the “Year of Confusion” when he decided that 46 B.C. would be 445 days long instead of 365 days long. He then made a 365.25-day year — a bit longer than the 365.2422 solar year — that added a leap day every fourth year.

But even this Roman system wasn’t right. e slight di erence between

It doesn’t sound obvious, but the system has kept the calendar and the seasons in sync for over 400 years. While there’s still a 30-second dri every year, the calendar won’t be o fort more than a day for another 3,300 years!

So there ya go! Now you know why we have Leap Years!

And here’s a fun Leap Year fact for you. According to a “Super DC Calendar” released in 1976, Superman’s birthday is February 29th!

Other famous Leap Year babies include rapper Ja Rule, motivational speaker Tony Robbins, actors Anthony Sabbato Jr. and Dennis Farina, Pope Paul III, and serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

Two-Year-Old Battling Courageously To Overcome Debilitating Lung Disease

In his two-plus years of life, Jaxyn Reynolds has never been outside of a hospital room. He has a debilitating lung disease that has kept him under intensive care since his birth.

is characterized by excessive overgrowth and cognitive/developmental delays, among other potential symptoms.

Born at 29 weeks, Jaxyn’s journey began. What set out to be the expected struggles of a neonatal intensive care unit stay turned into so much more. Days turned into weeks/months, and months turned into more than two —26 months to be exact.

Jaxyn’s lungs were sicker than anyone could have expected, requiring high ventilation support to breathe. is caused his lungs to develop a condition called bronchopulmonary dysplasia (sick lungs from the use of the mechanical ventilator). Jaxyn, also called Jax, was also diagnosed with Tracheobroncho Malaysia. (Floppy airway) as a result, the best chance Jaxyn had to not only survive but to grow and thrive was to place a tracheostomy. Jax had a G-tube placed at the same time for external feeds. He is 24/7 trach and ventilator dependent, meaning that the trach and ventilator breathe life into his lungs every second of every day! Jaxyn also has a genetic condition called Stos Syndrome, which

“We spent much of our journey ghting what felt like a losing battle. Medically, Jax has scared me more times in his life than I ever thought possible. At the same time, he has fought so incredibly hard, and that hard work has paid o ! A er over two years, my son nally gets to come home! For the rst time in two years,” Kim Reynolds, Jaxyn’s mother, told Webb Weekly. “I will have both of my beautiful children sleeping under the same roof. For the rst time ever, my daughter will be allowed to play with her brother outside of a medical establishment! I am overwhelmed with emotions. Excitement as we have fought so hard for this day to come. I’m nervous because, at the end of the day, no matter how prepared you are, trach life is 100 percent terrifying! Anxious to see what our new normal looks like at home.”

She continued, “ ankfully, Bayada Home Health Care has stood by our side as we navigate this journey. ey have gone above and beyond to ensure we feel supported! Knowing that I will have their help at home with home nurses (LPN or RN) and their support while we take the nal steps to close this chapter

gives me so much peace! is journey has been long and exhausting, but it has also changed my life for the better.

“ roughout this journey, I have met and gotten to know some incredible people. ese people have become like family and furthermore a huge part of our village. Bayada is one such company that I would consider part of our village. ey believe in us and support us every step of the way! ey have the same goal that I do: ‘to bring Jaxyn home!’ While Bayada has provided me with some pretty incredible home nurses, there is still availability for hours to be lled! Jonah Millinken is the director of Bayada Home Health Care locally, and he talked about what Bayada was doing to help meet Jaxyn and his family’s needs.

never been home — he has either been hospitalized or in a long-term care facility — and who is hospitalized at CHOP a er breaking his femur from an incident at this long term care facility, we knew we wanted to do whatever it took to get this kid home.

“ e reality is that to bring Jaxyn home, we need to recruit a team of nurses to provide near 24/7 care for Jaxyn,” stated Milliken. “I’m happy to report that currently we have recruited some nurses for this case — some nurses saw Jaxyn’s story online and were, like us in the Bayada o ce, immediately driven to want to help get him home. We still need more help on his case — and the reality, too, is that we have other clients, existing kids and adults whom we provide services to, and other kids like Jaxyn who are stuck at the hospital waiting for their homecare guardian angels to help get them home.”

He added, “Here’s the homecare perspective: At Bayada, our core mission is to ensure that children like Jaxyn receive the compassionate care they need and deserve within the comfort of their own homes. e prolonged hospitalization of Jaxyn, spanning over two years, mirrors an all-too-common plight faced by many children in our local communities and countless children and their families nationwide. is scenario,

though hard to fathom for those outside the immediate realm of healthcare or personal experience, underscores a critical issue: a nationwide caregiver and nursing shortage that severely limits our ability to meet the escalating healthcare needs of kids like Jaxyn and other people in our community.”

“Homecare nurses wield an incredibly profound in uence on the lives of their clients and the families they support. ose who choose to work with children like Jaxyn don’t just provide care; they gi something ine able—through dedicated, one-on-one, compassionate care, they essentially o er their clients a renewed lease on life. Bringing children like Jaxyn home from prolonged hospitalization does more than just reunite families; it reintroduces them to a semblance of normalcy and joy that has been absent for far too long (how lucky are those of us who take for granted the ability to see our loved ones, healthy, and at home every day?). God bless nurses and caregivers everywhere—but the nurses who are called to work in pediatric home care have a special place in my heart and the hearts of those they work with.”

Jaxyn has a long road ahead, but that road is lled with love and support for him, helping him attain the life of a normal youngster.

Living Well…

Improve Your Memory

*This article is intended for educational and entertainment purposes only and does not replace the advice of a medical professional.

We all forget things occasionally. What was the name of that guy in that movie? Do you know where I set my book? You might even miss an exit on the highway that you have taken a thousand times on your way to work. I must confess that I sometimes worry that I am developing early dementia or some other cognitive disorder. Usually, these small lapses are nothing serious and can be attributed to lack of sleep, stress, or some other distraction.

memory and make recalling information a little easier.

Still, who wouldn’t like to have a savantlike ability to recall facts like Ken Jennings or Kim Peek, the real-life person upon whom the character Raymond Bass in the movie “Rain Man,” is based? Honestly, I would just like to be able to find my car keys most mornings.

Memory goes through three stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Information is then stored as either a long-term or short-term memory. Then, hopefully, the memory will be retrievable at a later time. There are some things, however, that can be done to improve

Exercise: As I have been saying, exercise is awesome and helps with all sorts of things, including memory. It improves blood flow in general and has been shown to increase the size and neural function of the hippocampus, the part of your brain associated with verbal learning and memory. Of course, exercise is also great for improving sleep and reducing stress, which we’ll discuss in a bit.

Food: Eating well, like regular exercise, just makes good sense. You wouldn’t put cheap gas in a Ferrari if you expected peak performance. Similarly, you cannot expect your body and brain to operate efficiently on junk food and soda. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins and minerals. Eat healthy fats such as those found in nuts, avocados and fatty fish such as salmon. Also, though not technically a food, drink lots of water. Avoid sugar, processed foods, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Reduce stress: Unmanaged stress puts your body into Fight or Flight mode. In addition to being a general distraction, excessive stress is very damaging to both body and brain. Take a time out, practice mindfulness meditation, go for a walk, call

a friend, exercise, etc.

Sleep: Like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster, sleep can be an elusive creature. It does, however, play a huge role in memory as well as health in general. Not only does a lack of sleep inhibit concentration, but it also interrupts the consolidation of memories. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an adult’s sleep cycle should consist of four stages. The first two stages are light and non-rapid eye movement (NREM). The third is deep NREM. All three of these stages are prep for taking in new information the next day. They also help the brain sort through information acquired from the previous day by filtering and eliminating certain things. The deep NREM sleep stage will further cement these memories, which will continue into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Emotional memories are processed during REM sleep. In addition, most dreaming occurs during REM sleep, where the thalamus transmits information from all five senses to the cerebral cortex, which interprets and processes information from your memories. Poor sleep has been shown to lower learning by as much as 40%.

Organize information: If there is important or specific information you wish to recall later, outline it by making a note. If it is a large body of information, chunk it. This is a method by which you break down information into small, more

easily digested bits and learn in pieces.

Make associations: Information is often more easily remembered if it can be associated with something you already know. Create an image in your mind, such as your childhood home, and mentally place a memory in a room like you would a piece of furniture. As you walk through the house in your mind you can visualize each bit of information.

Say it: Saying a fact or piece of information, such as a person’s name, out loud has been shown to improve longterm memory. “Hi, Bill. Nice to meet you, Bill”-you get the picture. Bill might think you’re nuts, but you’ll never forget his name (nor he, yours).

There are other tips and tricks to improve memory, but the bottom line is that taking care of your overall health is the best starting point. Eat lots of nutritious food and exercise regularly. Get lots of quality sleep and manage your stress. From there, look into organizing information in a way that helps you to break it down into more easily remembered pieces. Use associations or create visual cues such as drawing a map or a picture of something you want to remember. Read your notes out loud or repeat the name of someone you just met to cement the information. Whatever methods you choose to employ, everyone can benefit from an improved memory, so work at it regularly just like you would work your body to stay sharp.

CTA Pamphlet Suggests Route Through City For Motorists Going to Fair

The publicity committee of the Community Trade Association today released information contained in a pamphlet outlining the short scenic route to the New York World’s Fair between Cleveland and New York via Williamsport. A savings of approximately 75 miles each way may be realized by motorists of the Mid-Western and Western states who plan to travel to New York City via Cleveland and Williamsport, the pamphlet points out.

ere are 120,000 pamphlets printed publicizing the route and are expected to be available for distribution to large cities and metropolitan areas possibly next week.

e booklet emphasizes that many motorists from central and western prairie states usually visit Chicago before starting East.

e pamphlet suggests they make Cleveland their next focal point and then

follow the Lakes-to-Sea Highway from Cleveland to Williamsport (300 miles) and from Williamsport to New York via Hazleton, Easton, Phillipsburg, New Jersey, and the fast New Jersey highways devoid of any large cities and tra c congestion, through the famous overhead Pulaski Skyway, directly into the Holland Tunnel into New York City.

e committee explains that Williamsport is a natural overnight stop from Cleveland. is city is a short, leisurely drive of 195 miles to New York City.

e Cleveland-WilliamsportWilliamsport route is not only shorter but extends through the heart of some of Pennsylvania’s best scenery, the committee states. Williamsport is the center of the great Northcentral Pennsylvania hunting and shing region and from it many short a ernoon trips can be enjoyed, the CTA groups suggests numerous state forests and parks are available for picnics, swimming, or recreation. Attractive side trips can be taken up the Pine Creek, Lycoming and Loyalsock valleys.

Two weeks ago, this column featured the power and problems of protection from abuse orders that were taking up enormous amounts of time from the Sheri ’s o ce. Sheri Lusk was back again at the Lycoming County Commissioners’ meeting on ursday, February 15th, along with three Lycoming County magistrate judges. ey came to advocate for a line item in the agenda for the Sheri ’s O ce to add ve new full-time deputies speci cally to protect the six Magisterial District o ces, especially the judges.

Under normal circumstances, I would not have given these judges a prayer in getting the commissioners to hire ve new personnel to add to the county’s budget. If there has been one common denominator in the former commissioner board and this one, it is the concern to guard the budget. Especially with the prospects of a lower population in the future, it is no

to

time to pad the payroll higher. But in this case, it was not for padding but for protection.

Magisterial district courts are called “courts of limited jurisdiction” because their jurisdiction is restricted to certain matters. Magisterial district courts are involved in non-jury trials in both the civil and criminal arenas with the amount of any ne not to exceed $12,000. Disputes between families, neighbors, citations, etc., are standard fare.

In a perfect world, these would be cases on the lower edge of the judicial branch conducted somewhat quickly

COUNTY HALL

and because the judicial aspect of these cases is relatively cut and dry. e magistrate district judges at the meeting told me that they generally go through twenty to thirty hearings in a day. However, in these days of rage, some of those who receive a negative decision in a case will not take it kindly, and sometimes things get ugly.

carrying large backpacks that could be concealing God knows what. She also had an irate woman who angrily tore the soap container o the wall in the ladies’ room (and it wasn’t to wash her hands!) Gary Whiteman, district magistrate in Montoursville, also took the podium and added his horror stories as well.

Denise Dieter, a district magistrate in Jersey Shore, stated to the commissioners, “It is not a matter of if, but when something happens to one of us.” She told a story of a thirtysomething female who did not look very strong when she came in to talk about a tra c citation, but when things did not go her way, she charged the bench and tried to pull the le away from the judge. Dieter did not know at the time that she also had ripped up the tra c citation from the state trooper who gave it to her. Another time, a tenant went a er the lawyer who was representing a landlord. She had to make a 911 call for help.

Kristen Gardner, district magistrate in Muncy, commented that it is common for homeless people to come into her o ce building to use the bathrooms

In the discussion that followed a er the three magistrates spoke, Sheri Lusk noted that yes, they could call 911 for help, but he noted that given the distance of these o ces, it could take as long as thirty minutes to arrive. Obviously, this could be too little too late. Commissioner Board President Scott Metzger and Sheri Lusk noted that this has been in the works for almost four years now. It took time to do the research, estimate the need, budget the new deputies, and now — nally — provide the necessary protection that these district magistrates needed to accomplish their duties without fear of reprisal.

In county government, it seems that nothing happens quickly. But as Abraham Lincoln said so wisely, “I might walk slow, but I don’t walk back.”

Memory Lane: 10 Worthy Memoirs for Winter Reading

Williamsport - (570) 322-6611

Wellsboro - (570) 724-3232

Elkland - (814) 258-5127

Among the hundreds of books I’ve enjoyed since retiring five years ago, I somehow keep gravitating to memoirs — those fascinating accounts of lives well lived. Or not so well, as the case may be.

In this genre, you might encounter history; a little romance, comedy, or nostalgia; interactions with famous figures; or perhaps just the feel of what life was like so many years ago.

written account of Douglass’s youth in slavery — together with his journey to emotional, intellectual and (at long last) literal freedom. One of our key autobiographies, this little book should be required reading for every American.

Here are 10 suggestions for your wintertime reading:

Phil Collins, Not Dead Yet (2016) – Front man for Genesis — with a fabulously successful solo career to boot — Collins recounts his storied life with self-deprecating humor, plus a vast array of celeb encounters (Eric Clapton, Tony Bennett, Robin Williams, Queen Elizabeth). Equally engaging are similar memoirs from Genesis bandmates Steve Hackett (A Genesis in My Bed, 2020) and Mike Rutherford (The Living Years, 2015).

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845) – Swift, enthralling and brilliantly

Ron & Clint Howard, The Boys (2021) – Co-written by sibling stars of TV and film, The Boys is chock-full of cool history and trivia on Andy Griffith, Star Trek, Roger Corman, Gentle Ben — and two of the most inspiring parents you will ever encounter.

Charles Johnson, Another Watchman (2022) – For a local angle, check out this recent release from beloved Williamsport-area pastor Johnson, who served many pulpits (including Oman and Bahrain!) over a 54-year career. Offering ample photos, as well as tributes from various grandkids, Johnson’s book tells — as he phrases it — “the journey of an ordinary (sometimes reluctant) man in the hands of an almighty and extraordinary God.”

Marilyn Monroe, My Story (1974) – Among the countless books on this American icon is one she penned herself. Cowritten by legendary Hollywood

screenwriter Ben Hecht, My Story was not published till 12 years after Marilyn’s all-too-early death — and in fact, that tragedy kept her from finishing this book, which covers her early career. Thoughtful and well written — a wakeup call for anyone who thought of this actress as just “a ditzy blonde.”

Farley Mowat, Owls in the Family (1962) – Brief, hilarious and charming tale of Mowat’s childhood adventures with two rescued (and largely flightless) owls. It was tough to pick one title from the famed Canadian naturalist, whose other nonfiction includes the World War II memoir When No Birds Sang; his own coming-of-age story Born Naked; the spellbinding Whale for the Killing; and of course, Never Cry Wolf — made into an award-winning 1983 movie.

Jean Shepherd, In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash (1966) – A few chapters from this uproarious book were adapted into the beloved holiday movie A Christmas Story — with Shepherd himself handling voiceover narration. But there’s much more to enjoy here; Shepherd covers such old-time topics as night-fishing and the Fourth of July with the same charming irreverence we know so well from the story of Ralphie and his Red Ryder BB gun.

Carly Simon, Touched by the Sun (2019) – The popular singer-songwriter here recounts her long, unlikely and heartfelt friendship with Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

Full of surprising encounters, littleknown details, and celebrity tidbits. Nicely written, too.

Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle (2009) – In my long teaching career, I constantly struggled getting teens to read; but there was no difficulty with this electrifying story of Walls’s hardscrabble childhood — and her appallingly dysfunctional family. It’s amazing not only that she survived the death-defying neglect (Glass Castle opens with Walls setting herself ablaze while boiling hot dogs — at age three!); but what’s more, she emerged still able to love and connect with her half-crazy parents. The 2018 movie with Brie Larson, Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson is good; but not this good.

Louis Zamperini, Devil at My Heels (2003) – One of those stories you’d scarcely believe if you didn’t know it was true: Zamperini’s life encompasses the 1936 Olympics in Berlin (where he met Hitler); a World War II plane crash, followed by 47 days in a tiny life-raft on the Pacific; ghastly mistreatment in a Japanese prison camp; then later, alcoholism and despair — followed by conversion to Christianity at a Billy Graham revival! Laura Hillenbrand’s better-known Unbroken tells the same story; but this book is shorter, and a bit more teen-friendly.

Now curl up with a nice warm beverage and take a step back in time….

Eating healthy can be a hard thing to do. We have so many good foods that tempt us on any given day. The donuts in the break room for breakfast. Stopping for fast food on lunch break because you didn’t have time to pack. Quick Starbucks stop for one of their fancy drinks during a busy day. Lastly, picking up a pizza at the end of a busy day. We have all done one or all of these, and there is nothing wrong with it in moderation.

I may never have stepped foot in a Starbucks, but I used to get fast food once

a week when I was heavier. When my kids were in preschool from 8-11:30 a.m., I would pick them up and swing through the drive-thru for lunch, telling myself it was a treat for them. I won’t even tell you what I ordered because it’s ridiculous. My eating habits were horrendous.

I loved donuts, pizza, fast food, and anything, of course, that tasted good. But it wasn’t the food that was the problem. It was how much of it I was eating each sitting.

Donuts are not your enemy. Pizza won’t ruin you. It’s the portions you eat and

your daily TDEE. What is TDEE? TDEE is your Total Daily Energy Expenditure that breaks down into four groups on any given day. Your BMR is the number of calories your body burns just to stay alive. (If you just laid in bed all day.) There’s the Thermic Effect of Food, which is the number of calories it takes for your body to break down each meal. NEAT, which is the Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Your everyday activities like doing laundry, going to the store, walking the dog, and simply going to work. Then there is exercise that is also a part of your TDEE but counts as the smallest part of your day. So, if you go to the gym for one hour and then sit on the couch the rest of the day, you aren’t doing yourself any favors. Yes, going to the gym or working out at home is so beneficial for our bodies, heart health, and our minds! But would you believe me if I told you your NEAT counts as the biggest part of your day to burn calories? It’s true. High step count is where a healthier lifestyle begins. Most Americans only get 3-4,000 steps a day. We should be getting, at the minimum, 7,500.

Ten thousand steps is the sweet spot, but you can’t tell someone who has been moving 4,000 steps a day to walk 10,000

steps. That’s not how this works. It’s adding steps and small changes over time. You gradually, over time, slowly add steps to your daily routine by parking further away, taking the steps instead of the elevator, or going for a ten-minute walk. It wasn’t until I was 33 that this all started to make sense to me. I was so overweight and felt horrible. I put on a good front but knew something had to be done. Things were getting ridiculous. Four slices of pizza in one sitting. Two cups of ice cream five nights a week. Going through two pounds of cheese in one week for our family? It was bad.

When I started, I knew I just had to make small changes over a period of time. I tried every diet under the sun. Nothing worked that made it sustainable for me. Yeah, I’d lose 30 lbs. in two or three months. But I felt deprived and always hungry because diets are a joke. They aren’t realistic. I’d gain all my weight back and MORE months later.

Believe it or not, our bodies need carbs for energy. Our bodies need dietary fats for energy and to support cell function. Protein is my favorite macro of all! It helps to build and repair our muscles and bones and, of course, energy. Plus, it is the longest macro for our bodies to break down, hence why protein keeps us full the longest. Cutting out a macro isn’t the answer. It’s learning how to get a healthy balance of it throughout your day.

I wish I could sit here and go into full details to help you understand. It has

taken me years of studying and learning. It was me taking the time to invest in my own self-knowledge over the past ve years of a healthier lifestyle. I still eat pizza, I still eat donuts, and I get fast food maybe once every 3-4 months?? (if that!) But I eat it all in moderation. I am a 70/30 kinda girl. I make sure I have a high step count, eat tons of protein, workout at least two days a week, and listen to hours of tness podcasts to continue to teach me more. I went to school to be a tness and nutrition coach two years ago and have had successful clients who are now living a healthier lifestyle, losing lots of weight while still eating the things they love! It’s incredible to watch their journeys!

I bounce between 62-68 pounds. I have lost and maintained that for over ve years. It’s been an incredible journey, and I am still on and will always be on. I don’t have spots available for full coaching programs right now, but I will be taking on a few accountability clients next month.

Visit that Link! STEP Begins Assessing Community Needs

Every three years, STEP is required to gather a detailed picture of the needs and resources in their service area of Lycoming and Clinton counties. The regular study was last completed in 2021, so it is time to reach out to residents again as part of the Community Assessment.

The community survey, along with the partner survey that reaches other social service agencies is primarily available online. All surveys can be accessed at www.stepcorp.org/cna, and you can use a computer or mobile device to complete the survey.

“We want responses not just from STEP customers, but from everyone in our service area,” said Rachelle Abbott, STEP Chief Operations and Planning Officer. “We need the data to accurately reflect the makeup of our community.”

In addition to the surveys, focus groups of community representatives, consisting of 8-12 individuals with extensive experience in their respective topics, will discuss subject areas in greater depth. The groups will meet virtually this spring. STEP is also working with partners in both counties to maximize the impact and usefulness of the data being collected. “

The completed Community Assessment

will be used to shape initiatives and funding strategies for not just STEP but for many other social service providers. An accurate, up-to-date Community Assessment allows organizations to pursue relevant funding, target programming toward documented community needs and, in some cases, to discontinue programs not supported by the assessment’s findings.

Any questions about the Community Assessment process can be directed to Jamey Williams at STEP, at jbwilliams@ stepcorp.org or 570.601.9546.

Faith Q&A: What is Truth?

When considering questions about the Christian faith, “What is truth?” should be high on everyone’s list.

Truth is hard to identify these days. We look to experts for truth, but it appears many professionals, politicians, and preachers are being driven by personal agendas that shape their version of the truth. If something is to be gained personally, truth is manipulated to bring about the desired outcome.

What is to be gained? What desire is so important to us that we are willing to sacrifice the truth to get it?

The answer can be found in one word:

freedom. God has placed the desire for freedom into every human heart. We long to be free. We yearn for it.

Patrick Henry understood and declared that freedom is more important than life itself. Patrick was referring to his own life while at the same time sacrificing the lives of the slaves he owned to advance his personal freedom. He was terribly conflicted within himself and acknowledged that he could not justify slave ownership — but not conflicted enough to set his slaves free.

We humans are a self-justifying mess. Be careful here. Before you begin throwing stones at Patrick Henry and others, it would

be wise to take a hard look in the mirror. We humans are all susceptible to the same ills. We can’t deny human history; we must learn from it. If we don’t, we fall into the trap of expressing moral outrage toward the offenses of others while committing the same offenses ourselves. The writer of Ecclesiastes declared in 1:9, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” Is your life defined and driven by truthfulness in every area? If you can’t answer yes, then stop throwing stones and start making corrections.

There are two ways to achieve freedom. One requires the giving of our own lives through self-restraint, honesty, hard work, and sacrifice. The other requires stealing life from someone else.

Freedom always has a cost — and someone must pay for it. It is the law of freedom. There is no way around it. We must choose. Either we will give our own lives for the sake of freedom, or we will take someone else’s. Those are the options.

The most effective tool for taking someone else’s freedom is the manipulation of the truth. And the reason we are so easily duped by liars is because we are also looking for a shortcut to freedom. Liars are successful because selfish people are willing to buy what they’re selling.

The freedom earned through self-restraint

Faith

and honesty brings light and, life and freedom to others. e freedom earned through the manipulation of the truth brings darkness, bondage, and death to others.

Today, we are witnessing the consequences of freedom gained through the manipulation of the truth. It’s getting darker in our world. Bondage and death are becoming our cultural norm. is is important to understand. When we steal life from others to advance our own freedom, the world we live in becomes increasingly lled with darkness, bondage, and death. What good is personal freedom if the world we’ve created is a miserable cesspool?

We don’t need extensive research and polling to reveal that the truth is dying. Just consider your own thoughts and the conversations you are having with friends. We don’t know who to trust anymore. It feels like everyone is twisting the truth for their own gain. Part of the reason we feel that way is because we’re likely doing the same thing. It’s a selfperpetuating disaster — and we know it.

Recent research has revealed that professionals are trusted signi cantly less today than they were ve years ago. It’s a dark trend, and without radical change, the darkness will spread across our land like a plague.

When Jesus was gathering His disciples, He made this observation about Nathanael in John 1:47, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” Considering Jesus’ ability to know the heart and mind, it is an extraordinary observation. Jesus didn’t describe anyone else that way. He saw something extraordinary in Nathanael — and He openly celebrated it.

Would Jesus make the same observation about me? Would He openly celebrate my truthfulness? Am I so deeply committed to the truth that I am willing to sacri ce my own life to preserve and protect the truth for others? Am I so committed to freedom that I am willing to sacri ce my own life to preserve and protect freedom for others?

ese are big questions. e answer we give through our actions today will determine the nature of the world in which we live. Will it be increasing light and life and freedom for all? Or will it be increasing darkness and bondage and death for all? ose are the options.

God’s words to Israel in Deuteronomy 30:1520 are clearly a prophetic warning to us: See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees, and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. is day, I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

What will you choose?

Finding a Joey in the Kangaroo: More Words Inside Words

A“kangaroo word” is an obscure but fascinating linguistic phenomenon where a longer word contains its own synonym — with letters in the same order.

As pointed out last week, a kangaroo word like blossom contains the synonym bloom, which in turn is called a “joey” — that Australian term for a baby kangaroo.

There are hundreds of these in English — including several simple but clear examples we shared here last week: platter and plate; feasted and ate; supremacist and racist; prematurely and early; curtail and cut; observe and see; even myself and me.

I’m especially fond of instances where it’s possible to derive the synonym in more than one way.

Barrier, for example, gives us the similar bar three times, depending on which R you choose. And pinion, which means pin, also triply yields its own shorter synonym: PINion,

PInioN, and PinIoN. (In the past tense, however, there is only PINioNED.)

Or take the classic oddball word Brobdingnagian. Meaning huge or immense, it derives from the Brobdingnags, a race of giants in Jonathan Swift’s 1727 novel Gulliver’s Travels. (That’s why even the adjective is capitalized.) As you may already noticed (or should I say noted): the word big can be derived from both terms — in more than one way. And the same is true for deceased and dead, depending on which E you use. (Departed also yields dead — but only one way.)

Along the same lines: equal can be derived from both equitable and equilateral; and you’ll also find equity in equality (which kinda sounds like a motto).

Appropriately, container holds both can and tin — and that reminds me: the first word in this sentence can be shortened to aptly, which means the same thing (it also works without the -LY). Fittingly (fitly?), apt can also be found inside its synonym apposite

Another favorite is asseverate, which means to declare in a solemn or serious way. That four-syllable mouthful contains the more manageable aver and assert, which are both synonyms of their longer “parent.”

(Incidentally: ver- is a Latin base meaning “true,” as in very, verify, verdict, verisimilitude and, yes, aver. However, the “ver” in asseverate is not from this base; instead, it derives from severe — for the somber manner in which one makes an “asseveration.”)

We ended last week’s column with a

list of kangaroo parent words — and a challenge to find the “joey” in each. Here are the answers:

Allocate: allot. Appropriate (see above). Barren: bare. Before: ere. Budweiser: beer. Calumnies (and falsities): lies. Catacomb: tomb. Chocolate: cocoa. Closemouthed: mute. Contaminate: taint. Contradictory: contrary. Cooled: cold.

Deliberate (verb): debate. Destruction; ruin. Disappointed: sad. Disputation: spat. Encourage: urge. Equality (see above). Evacuate:

vacate. Exists: is. Expurgate: purge. Fragile: frail. Honorable: noble. Hurries: hies. Illuminated (and lighted): lit. Indolent: idle. Inheritor: heir.

Instructor: tutor. Municipality: city. Ornamented: ornate. Playfellow: pal. Precipitation: rain. Prematurely (see above). Postured: posed. Rambunctious: raucous. Rampage: rage. Rapscallion: rascal. Recline: lie. Respite: rest. Restrain: rein. Rotund: round. Revolution: revolt. Salvage: save. Slithered: slid. Strives: tries. Substandard: bad. Tosspot: sot.

Transgression: sin. And unsightly: ugly.

For more examples, see Rod Evans’s fascinating book Tyrannosaurus Lex — where I first learned about kangaroo words. Online, you won’t find a more thorough list than the appendix for kangaroo words at Wiktionary; but I also like the clever compendium at hitbullseye.com. Examples include deteriorate, which contains both die and rot.

Here’s hoping you won’t be too dazzled by the long list there; or should I say … dazed?

In part 1, we explored different types and brands of foundation for mature and aging skin. Here in part 2, we’ll run through how best to apply and wear makeup on the over-40 face for a natural and glowing finish.

To make foundation look natural, start with a thin layer of makeup and build it up as you need. But before you begin applying makeup, what’s more important is layering skincare products underneath foundation to help it look fresh. You’ll benefit from the right moisturizer, primer, and glow-boosting serum to prep the skin and create a solid canvas for makeup to sit on top without looking cakey or clinging to dry areas or wrinkles.

dealing with texture concerns, such as enlarged pores, uneven areas, active acne, or acne scars.

Primer works with any age skin but is especially impactful on older skin to hydrate and plump the face. Blurring primer, in particular, works to ease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Laura Mericer’s Pure Canvas

Primer is a silicone-free blurring formula that absorbs excess oil to give makeup a soft-focus effect.

Thrive Cosmetic’s Filter Effect Blurring Primer helps smooth skin and makes foundation long-lasting throughout the day. I’ve not used Thrive’s primer, however I love their mascara and eye brightener.

Prep is not limited to products applied before makeup; it also involves weekly skincare. Exfoliating every 2-to-3 days removes dead skin and keeps your complexion looking smooth and youthful.

It wasn’t until I was in my thirties that I started using a primer before applying makeup, and I wish I had started sooner. Primer can be ideal for anyone

Speaking of eyes, if you regularly apply shadows, eyeliner, etc., then also consider an eye primer. Thrive has you covered with their Eye Lift 360 waterproof formula for smudge-proof eye makeup. I’ve already added this to my virtual cart.

There is a wide variety of dewyinducing products to consider for skin preparation, from standard

moisturizers to specialty serums. The newest addition to my pre-makeup routine is Glossier’s Futuredew oil serum hybrid. This formula boasts plant-based extracts and nourishing oils, keeping my foundation in play and non-cakey. Another product that’s got some recent buzz is Cosrx’s Snail Mucin Repairing Essence serum. Yep, you read right, “snail mucin” in other words snail secretion filtrate, which is the slime that snails produce while moving. Am I above slathering my face in snail slime? No, I am not, especially if it gets the job done!

Whether you use oils, lotions, serums, or snails as layered skincare, you can add one final bit of hydration by spritzing your foundation brushes or sponges with a facial mist. This will help the foundation glide on your skin and blend seamlessly. I use Grace & Stella’s Spray All Day rose facial mist, both as a prep directly on my skin as well as my makeup wedges. I’d also recommend Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray with aloe, cucumber, and green tea. They make mini sizes, which are handy when traveling.

For actual application, depending on the foundation type, using her fingertips or a damp beauty sponge is your best bet for the smoothest finish. You can even spray fingers with a facial mist as you would for other applicators.

Once your foundation is blended, you can go in with a concealer for under the eyes, bonus points if you used an eye primer, then bronzer, blush, and eye shadow if you want to rock a full face of makeup. If you’re looking for a nomakeup makeup look, then just shape your brows, add a tiny bit of color on the cheeks, then a moisturized lip.

Lastly, skip the setting powder. This can be hard after years of matte finish, but powder tends to create cakey patches and dry out the skin. To combat unintended shine, consider blotting papers or dabbing with tissues. If you truly can’t put the powder down, then lightly brush a translucent powder, like Bare Mineral’s Veil Setting Powder, or better yet, Setting Powder with SPF 25, across the T-zone of your face. If you start to feel dry throughout the day, dab on a light cream to rehydrate. I always have a small jar of Nivea’s soft moisturizing crème in my bag for hydrating touchups.

Of course, if you’re at an age where you feel like you no longer need or want to wear makeup of any kind, then kudos to you; you probably get more sleep than me.

But even if you forgo cosmetics, mature skin still needs love and care. So please moisturize, SPF, and exfoliate even if you leave the foundation on the

Cognitive decline

A certain degree of memory loss is a natural component of aging. Forgetting where you le your keys or experiencing di culty putting a name to a face can be a random and frustrating occurrence. However, dementias, like Alzheimer’s disease, are not a side e ect of aging. Osteoarthritis

Aches and pains may come with aging, and o en can be attributed to osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of arthritis, according to the Mayo Clinic. Osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears away over time. It is progressive and cannot be reversed, but maintaining a healthy weight and staying active can help alleviate pain and improve joint function.

Cataracts and refractive errors

It should come as no surprise to most that the eyes change as the body ages. Refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia can make objects look blurry when viewed, says the National Eye Institute. Cataracts, which are a clouding of the eye’s natural lenses, a ect about 20 percent of people age 65 and older, according to the American Geriatrics Society, while the National Eye Institute says half of all people over age 80 will get them. Cataract removal surgery and prescription eyeglasses can help.

Type 2 diabetes

My situation all began with a stroke, then I was faced with a spinal fusion and eventually experienced another stroke. The therapy department at Valley View has helped me become stronger for my wife and walk longer distances to help with my independence. I think I began to feel stronger last week when it finally “clicked”, and I started doing more things on my own. They have a kitchen that is made to look like a little apartment, this helped me to see if I could be independent at home. At times therapy has been challenging to overcome. Sitting up and getting out bed has been my biggest challenge and TODAY, I have overcome that challenge. My therapists have been with me every step of the way, they make me feel safe and secure.

I would recommend this facility to anyone who is recovering from a stroke is struggling with walking. This is a good therapeutic program, designed me by my therapists. It is not easier or harder than I expected. The nursing, activities, therapy staff are very kind. Each one, in their own way, has helped my recovery process. I thank each and every person who has helped me.

All my family and friends who came to visit me were very impressed with this facility and the sta . e friendly sta , meals at the new cache, cleanliness, and the attentiveness of the nursing sta was wonderful. e erapy sta was great! It is a nice place to get together and do some group activities with other residents. We have many groups to participate in including home safety, balance group, ADL, fall prevention, and milkshake group.

What Seniors Should Know About Prediabetes

changes to prevent such a progression. How common is prediabetes?

Most seniors recognize that routine visits to their physicians are an important component of preventive health care. Annual physicals are important for everyone, but they’re especially important for individuals 65 and older who may be more vulnerable to disease and various other health conditions than younger adults.

e National Institute on Aging reports that millions of individuals 65 and older have visited their physicians and learned they have a condition known as prediabetes. For some, the day they receive a prediabetes diagnosis also marks the rst time they’ve heard of the condition. Since so many seniors are a ected by prediabetes, it can behoove anyone to learn more about it. What is prediabetes?

e Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that prediabetes is a serious health condition characterized by higher than normal blood sugar levels. When a person has prediabetes, his or her blood sugar levels are not yet high enough to indicate type 2 diabetes, but that could change if prediabetes patients do not make

A 2023 study published in the journal Diabetes Care indicates that 464 million individuals across the globe had impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and 298 million had impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in 2021. Each of those conditions are hallmarks of prediabetes, cases of which the study indicates are expected to rise signi cantly by 2045.

What causes prediabetes?

e CDC notes that when a person has prediabetes, the cells in his or her body do not respond normally to insulin, which is a hormone produced by the pancreas that enables blood sugar to enter cells, which then use it for energy. e pancreas then makes more insulin to get cells to respond, but eventually the pancreas cannot keep up, resulting in a rise in blood sugar.

Does prediabetes produce symptoms?

Many people have prediabetes for years and do not know it. In fact, the CDC reports that more than 80 percent of the 98 million American adults who have prediabetes are unaware that they

How can I determine if I have prediabetes?

The sheer volume of people who have prediabetes but are unaware that they do begs the question of what individuals can do to learn if they have the condition before they develop type 2 diabetes. Recognition of the risk factors for prediabetes is a good start. The CDC urges anyone who has any of the following risk factors to speak with their doctor about having their blood sugar tested:

• Being overweight

• Being 45 or older

• Having a parent, brother or sister

with type 2 diabetes

• Being physically active less than three times per week

FIND RELIEF FROM VARICOSE VEINS.

• A history of diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) or giving birth to a baby who weighed more than nine pounds

• Having polycystic ovary syndrome

• Being African American, Hispanic/ Latino American, American Indian, or Pacific Islander. Some Asian Americans also are at greater risk for prediabetes. Prediabetes can be a precursor to type 2 diabetes, which only highlights how important it is that older adults recognize their risk for the condition.

Ican still recall taking my rst spring gobbler as if it happened yesterday — although it actually happened up Wallis Run over 60 years ago! Since then, well over 100 longbeards have fallen to various weapons that I have used as I pursued them in all 49 states that have a huntable population of turkeys (Alaska does not). Along the way, and through numerous discussions with fellow turkey hunters across the country and around the state, several things come to mind that just might lead to greater success for rst-time turkey hunters.

It is never too early to scout. With the snow currently on the ground and the occasional snow that may occur over the next few weeks, identifying where turkeys are located and their travel areas is much easier. True, birds will tend to move from wintering areas to springtime travel locations, but the sooner you locate turkeys, the sooner you can seek to gain permission if they are on private property, and it is

common courtesy to seek permission now, rather than wait until just before the season opens. e one-day Youth Hunt will occur this coming spring on Saturday, April 27; the regular Spring Gobbler season starts on May 4 and runs until May 31. Even if you plan to hunt on State Game Lands, the sooner you locate turkeys, the sooner you can develop your game plan for opening day. Start scouting now — opening day will be here sooner than you think!

Practice o en and become very comfortable with your weapon. If you are not already an experienced hunter, it is best to leave your archery equipment on the rack and focus on taking your rst turkey with a shotgun. A 12 gauge would be best, but if you are a young hunter, a 20 gauge might be preferable. Either way, the ammunition available today, particularly the various brands of TSS turkey loads, makes either gauge extremely lethal on turkeys. TSS ammunition is expensive, so use less expensive ammo to familiarize yourself and become comfortable with the gun, then re

several rounds with the TSS to verify how that ammunition patterns in your shotgun. Practice taking shots from standing, sitting, and even awkward positions since wise old gobblers o en seem to appear in the most unlikely and uncomfortable places!

Practice your calling at home and limit your calling when on the hunt. When you are out scouting before the season begins, never, never, never do any calling that imitates any turkey sounds. If you must, use a locator call (owl hooter, coyote call, or peacock imitation) and do so sparingly. If you get a reply from a nearby turkey — stop! If you use a turkey call or if you overuse a locator call, you will succeed in educating the birds, and they may become call-shy and not respond later on when the season has begun. On an actual hunt, call sparingly. If you watch any of the various TV shows or videos about turkey hunting, it seems like the hunters are calling continuously. Still, it is merely a result of editing and trying to t as much story in between commercials throughout the show as possible. In reality, try to limit your calling to a series of calls every 20 to 30 minutes and listen intently for any response. Once you have a bird

answering your calling, begin the back and forth to lure him into range. Even if there is no answer to your calls, constantly scan the area in search of an approaching old Tom — they frequently walk in silently to a call.

When preseason scouting, select your setup location and have con dence in it. e more preseason scouting you do, the more opportunity you will have to locate a prime setup location. Do some scouting at daybreak to hopefully nd where the birds are roosting overnight and try to observe their initial travel route a er ydown. Locating travel routes — o en on old logging roads — and feeding locations will help in identifying a setup location. On the actual hunt, have con dence in your setup location. Don’t be wandering around looking for a better spot. Turkeys have extremely good eyesight and hearing, and once you have made a call or two, they know exactly where the call is coming from.

Patience! at one element — being patient — has killed more turkeys than any other factor. Have con dence in your equipment, setup location, and calling, and above all — be patient (and Good Luck!)

It’s hard to believe that another trout season is just around the corner, and the stocking of trout is already underway — as of February 19th.

e Fish and Boat Commission will be stocking a total of 3.2 million trout. at includes 2.3 million rainbows, 702,000 browns, 132,000 brookies and 14,000 golden trout. With the addition of the trout stocked by Cooperative Nurseries, there will be a total of well over four million trout placed into 129

lakes and 697 streams. No wonder Pennsylvania is one of the leading states when it comes to trout shing. Opening day for the regular statewide trout season is set for April 6th, but keep in mind that the Mentored Youth Day is March 30th

Senior residents, 65 and older, who purchased a lifetime license before January 1, 1991, are not required to purchase a trout permit. If you purchased a combination trout/Lake Erie permit before January 1, 2015, you

also remain exempt from the requirement to purchase a trout permit annually. Licenses don’t have to be displayed on outer garments, but you must have them in your possession.

To participate in the youth mentored shing day, adults, those 16 and older, must have a valid license and trout permit, and they must be accompanied by a youth less than 16 years of age who has a

Mentored Youth Permit, which is free or a Voluntary Youth Fishing License at $2.97.

I will say that when it comes to trout shing in Pennsylvania, things can get a bit complicated as to what you can do and where, so I highly recommend you get a Pennsylvania Fishing Summary booklet to help clarify things.

In addition to our regular rules regarding trout waters, there are a number of special regulation streams and waters that have a di erent set of regulations.

For example, some stream sections are set aside as All Tackle Trophy Trout

waters, and some are designated as Catch and Release All Tackle. There are also Catch and Release Artificial Lures Only and Catch, Release Fly-Fishing Only, and Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only, as well as Trophy Trout Artificial Lures Only. I didn’t mention all of the possibilities nor any of the details involving each one —that’s why you need your summary booklet.

If you see signs posted at your local stream, I highly suggest that you read them to check out what’s involved.

Several years ago, I was fishing an artificial lures-only catch and release section on a stream when I saw some

guys come down to the stream and set up with their live minnow buckets beside them; needless to say, I made a call to the Fish and Boat Commission. Opening day will be here before you know it, so now is a good time to check out all that gear. Maybe replace that old monofilament with some new line that won’t twist up so much and get rid of that container of worms that’s been stuffed in the basement refrigerator since last year. Now would also be a good time to sit down to the fly-tying vice and put together some streamers and wet flies for those opening days. See you on the stream.

Usually, the individual chosen to receive the honor receives noti cation either in person or via a telephone call. For the upcoming 2024 honoree, Dave Bower, such was not the case. Rather, he learned about it from the pulpit during a Sunday morning church service.

“Yes. It was a surprise,” Bower related. “When I walked into the church, I saw a few friends not normally there. I was seated in the pew when suddenly an announcement was made that I was the recipient of the Ray Keyes Brotherhood Sports Award. I was shocked and almost fell out of the pew. It was a complete surprise, and I was both honored and shocked.”

e prestigious Brotherhood Award is presented to individuals in recognition of their commitment to the development of sports skills and sportsmanship of county

e Montoursville High School and Lock Haven University product has been the epitome of the Brotherhood ideals during ve decades of coaching, teaching, and counseling. He was a decorated college athlete, a United States Air Force veteran, a dedicated high school and college instructor, a successful college coach, and a caring community volunteer assisting various non-pro t groups in ful lling their meaningful missions throughout the area.

“To be honored with the Brotherhood Award means a lot to me. is means other people have thought that not only was I successful in sports, but I was also willing to help other people who don’t have anything to do with sports. It is a great honor. Looking over the number of past recipients of this award and knowing it is named a er Ray Keyes and what he represented in our community makes it even more meaningful.

“As you go through life, you do the things you do because you want to, not with the thoughts of receiving rewards. A lot of people that have done a lot more than I have and haven’t received this award. It was an honor to just have been

rough a lifetime of coaching, teaching, and counseling, Bower sees all three as intertwined.

“You’re teaching while you’re coaching, and you’re coaching while you’re teaching. roughout my career, I’ve leaned toward those who didn’t feel very good about themselves or had issues they were dealing with. To me, those instances comprise the greatest accomplishments of my career. It made me feel really good helping people get through some di cult times like addiction or family loss.

“One of the things that has been most rewarding is serving as a hospice volunteer. ose instances can be incredibly

stressful for everyone involved. Being able to give the families some relief and share conversations with the patient has provided insights I’ll always remember.”

As his teaching and coaching careers grew to a close, Bower noted a lack of con dence as the biggest change he saw in his students.

“ e biggest changes I’ve seen toward the end of my career are the many kids that just don’t have any con dence. Many lack con dence, while others felt they were pressured by their parents to go to college.

I would share with these students that they were the ones who needed to nd their way in life. Once they discover they can do something better than anyone else, that is what they need to do. ey need to

ght the temptation to give up or look for the easy path. e worst thing they can do is give up.

“I would advise young people to grab ahold of a parent, a teacher, a coach who can positively in uence them and set the right course in life. One of the most in uential people in my life has been coach Frank Girardi, who hired me for my rst coaching job and has been by my side through some rough times ever since. at’s what I try and point out to kids — nd those types of people. It will help them, but they must be willing to help themselves.

“In all the years I’ve coached, it’s the little things that have meant the most to me. Receiving letters from kids I’ve coached

telling me how much I had a positive e ect upon their lives. I’ve saved all of these letters and notes. When you are just starting out as a coach, it is all about winning and accolades. While winning is important to the profession, it is not until much later in life that you realize the positive in uences you have had on someone’s life are the most important of all.”

Recognizing his playing and coaching accomplishments, Bower now joins a di erent type of team with his Brotherhood teammates.

“Reading the names of all those that previously won this award is humbling. I’m now glad to join them on that same team.”

Iwould like to give a little love to Iowa’s Caitlin Clark. She is fantastic to watch — incredible player. Unbelievable scoring guard. I will go out of my way to tune in. She is that good. Caitlin became the ALL-TIME LEADING scorer in Women’s NCAA history here recently. Clark is only 99 points shy of Pistol Pete Maravich’s mark. I believe she will top that soon. And

she will go down as SCORING QUEEN.

The Hawkeyes are one of the nation’s top teams, and Caitlin is the star. She is the face of College Basketball. Men or Women. Clark constantly produces absurd numbers while drawing so much attention from the other squads. Some folks will double or even triple-team her. Others try to deny Clark the ball. No one has

found an answer. Caitlin continues to dazzle and score. Clark is the topic of conversation. Many celebs and politicians have chimed in. Caitlin handles it extremely well. Her impact on the game is insane. The attendance numbers and views are off the charts. Iowa hosted a preseason game against DePaul in Kinnick Stadium. Yes. It was outdoors. There were 55,646 fans. That shattered the previous tallies. Seventeen of Iowa’s 19 total sellouts have occurred during Caitlin’s time.

Maryland, Lycoming and Nebraska. No, Caitlin didn’t play against the Warriors. Sorry.

Clark has also amplified the interest in Division 1 Women’s Basketball. A new overall attendance record was established in 2022-23 at 8,784,401 in-person fans. The NCAA Tournament was packed. They also set a new record with 357,542 in the stands. This was capped by a sellout crowd of 19,482 at the Championship game between Iowa and LSU. The TV ratings are rather impressive. That 2023 Championship drew over 10 million views, a 103% increase from 2022. That title game also shattered the previous record of 5.7 million viewers for UCONN and Oklahoma set in 2002. Crazy.

Away from Iowa City, Clark and the Hawkeyes have helped sell out or break attendance records in 30 of their 32 contests. According to reports, schools that host Iowa have seen an increase in fans by 150% compared to other home games. Iowa has seen many sellouts in 2023-24. Northern Iowa, their first ever, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Rutgers,

Kudos to Caitlin. She has changed the entire landscape. Clark is now the face of college basketball. Men and Women. And now you even see her on a few commercials with STATE FARM. I will congratulate her when she sets the record. I will continue to tune in for every game. Caitlin is a very special player. Once
