he cover reading February 21st means only one more issue this month; that’s a good thing. To go along with Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day falling on the same date, we also have a leap year in 2024. An early Happy Birthday to all those folks who only celebrate that special day once every four years. What a great way to stay young. I wonder if most choose the 28th or the 1st of March to normally celebrate their special day when it only occurs in a year that has 366 days. Just one more thought before I leap to another subject: there’s probably only one day worse to be born on as far as birthday celebrations, my guess would be Christmas. As I drove to work to pen this column, the sun was coming up; it was an absolutely beautiful sunrise. The fact that it was only a little after 6 in the morning made it even better. There was just enough snow to cover God’s green earth to add to the beauty of the morning. It was exactly what I needed as I wanted to rant a column about the senseless violence witnessed in Kansas City. A day intended to celebrate the Chiefs’ Championship turned into a tragedy many will never forget. It will

also have sports fans looking over their shoulder in a variety of ways. A rant, however, would accomplish nothing, although I’m sure most people reading this feel the same way I do. I am beyond angry about watching this death and tragedy play out on a daily basis across the United States of America. No one is safe from it, and most often, children are the most innocent victims. Families torn apart forever by pure evil. The frequency of these events seems to increase with every passing week. What always follows a mass gun violence event is it being turned into a political football by those on opposite sides of the gun control debate. This approach usually begins within the media at a time when the power of prayer and unity should be encouraged over the political overtones, which only creates more division during an emotionally charged time. As I watch our Nation coming apart at the seams, one of the most alarming threats I witness is the complete disregard for human life by fellow Americans. These acts of violence and evil extend far beyond just gun violence. And again, often those affected are

the youngest Americans, from 19 to infant. Now, to the reality that bothers me the most about mass shootings: how do you stop the crazed and evil perpetrators? When someone Jim reaches the point of actuWebb Jr. ally carrying out murder — in cold blood — of the unarmed and innocent, they cannot be reasoned with. They are going to or have already obtained the weapon and have a plan. There is no way any amount of gun legislation can prevent this type of criminal element from obtaining a gun in a Nation filled with firearms of every type. This is not a political statement; this is just common sense and reality. This is not to say that we don’t need more training, education, and review of gun laws. This should always be happening regarding our Nation and the interest of public safety. However, the Second Amendment and the ability of law-abiding American citizens to protect themselves should never be tied to a criminal act of violence in any manner. The mental health crisis fueling the senseless violence in this post-COVID world is almost impossible to figure

out. However, it’s an epidemic of a problem. This must be focused on as a way to hopefully avoid future tragedies. There is also the reality of the battle occurring between good and evil, and some individuals are just on the wrong side of loving their fellow men. We cannot depend on government or law enforcement to solve or prevent this problem alone. We all must be vigilant of our surroundings and try to identify any individual that could be a threat or become a possible threat based on behavior. This will also require continued education and preparation for schools, churches, hospitals, sporting events, concerts, or anywhere the most vulnerable can be found. This training must include active shooter scenarios. We must notify law enforcement and do everything we can to work with them. We must all be on the same team. There has never been a more important time when you must look for and expect the unexpected and then speak up. The last thing any law-abiding citizen wants is to have their safety, freedom, or peace of mind lost to this growing problem. We must unite and recognize this problem for what it is. We must also demand violent criminals be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. God Bless America.

leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. Their vision is that the Junior League of Williamsport is a resource and advocate committed to improving the quality of life for children and their families. The following values guide them to accomplish their mission and achieve their vision: – A membership that is inclusive of all women who believe in the importance of volunteerism. – The power of collaboration across all sectors to create sustainable and thriving communities. – The significance of women exercising leadership widely and broadly throughout the community.

– A League environment that encourages diversity of opinion and supports multigenerational engagement. The Junior League has a rich history in the community from its founding. According to Amanda Steinbacher, president, the early activities of the League focused on efforts with the Red Cross, well-baby clinics, and assisting the community with other needs, such as playground equipment. By the 1960s, League members were publishing books about the historical significance of local homes and along West Fourth Street, Steinbacher added. Junior League members also created the Exchange Mart, which was a discount store run by volunteers. The women were the foundation for the first tactile museum in the city, which eventually became the Children’s Discovery Workshop in the late 1980s. The Junior League’s support reaches far and wide in the community. In 2005, the Junior League pledged $25,000 for the James V. Brown Library’s Capital Campaign to build a new children’s wing. In 2011, the League brought Elizabeth Smart to the Community Arts Center to share her story with local students. Members also participated in many projects with the Central PA Food

while also being able to make an impact through voluntarism.” Other members of the Board of the Junior League agree. “As a Williamsport native, I joined the Junior League of Williamsport to give back to our wonderful community. Further, my leadership skills, create lifelong friendships, and work alongside empowering women,” said Melissa Kelley, president-elect. “I joined Junior League of Williamsport to give back to our community and to show my daughter, a 7th grader at the time, the needs our community had/ has and the purpose of volunteering,” said Michele Boyles, community vice president. “As a league, we have all made an impact within our community and each other’s lives.” “I joined the League to be active in my community and to meet like-minded women,” said Sustaining Advisor Dana Brigandi, who joined in the early 2000s. “I didn’t know I would also meet women I’m proud to call my friends and get to volunteer alongside them to make a difference.” The women of the Junior League of Williamsport look forward to many more years of service to others and empowering women.

Bank, Project Linus, Firetree Place, and more. In 2002, they created an Endowment Fund with the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania. One of the highlights for many members was starting the Cinderella’s Closet prom dress project, which was eventually taken over by the YWCA Boutique. New this year, members are working on an initiative called “Code Red. Period.”, which addresses period poverty, the struggle many low-income women and girls face while trying to afford menstrual products. So far, this initiative has placed thousands of take-home supplies in several local school districts with a goal to expand to all school districts within Lycoming County. Projects like this also set an example for future leaders. The women involved with the Junior League are very passionate and committed to their work with the League. Amanda Steinbacher, president of the Junior League of Williamsport, told Webb Weekly, “Being a part of the League has broadened my knowledge of our Williamsport community and all of the wonderful things it offers. Williamsport airman, Sg. Carl W. Moore of 509 Depot Street, top turret gunner on a Flying Fortress, figures prominently in the air drama which took place over England and saw a navigator and engineer make an unsuccessful attempt to land the Fortress because the wounded pilot still breathed and they wanted to save his life. Despite orders to bail out, the navigator and engineer stuck with the ship, despite the fact that they did not know how to fly. Ground officers ordered them to bail out but they refused. They were killed in the crash of the ship. Sgt. Moore was one of the six crewmen ordered to bail out as orders were received. The local sergeant helped fly the Fortress part of the way back home. Moore’s story follows: “We were 250 miles from the target when a couple of ME-109s came up to us,” Moore said, “and I saw a sheet of yellow flame and I instinctively ducked. The co-pilot was killed instantly and I thought I was too. The two FW-190s hit us, wounding our radio operator but he got one of them in turn.

“The ship went into a flat spin and everybody was thrown to the floor. I went inside and found that pilot and co-pilot and fallen against the stick. Both of them were hit in the face. I pulled the plane out level but we couldn’t get them from their seats. Moore said the navigator took the stick and closed the bomb bay doors, since the bombs had not been dropped . With the windows blasted open it was icy cold in the pilot’s compartment.” “Myself, the navigator and engineer took turns piloting the plane toward home for three hours. We couldn’t stand the cold very long at a time. I just had to stand between the pilot and co-pilot and hold that limp body with my elbow while I guided the ship.” “We flew over water for a long time. We flew over the coast and nobody shot up at us, so we decided it must be England.” They finally got a bearing on the airfield and the engineer flew the plane.” “We had to leave the pilot in his seat,” Moore said. “He seemed to be breathing. Then they ordered us to bale out and le the navigator and engineer take control of the ship. I landed in a herd of sheep and was OK.”

O

riginally, there were eight holidays that everyone knew about. There were the major holidays of Christmas and Easter, along with Independence Day (July 4) and Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday in November). The minor ones were: Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12), Washington’s Birthday (February 22), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), and Labor Day (First Monday in September). All of these holidays date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. But through the 20th century, the minor holidays continually lost interest. They simply became an excuse to schedule off work, especially for federal employees. This created the slow but sure process of having every month with a ‘holiday.’ I honestly wonder if there would have been a Martin Luther King Day if he had been born in July or December. Fortunately, he was born in January, which had no holidays outside of New Year’s Day. I would wager that very few know that it was the Republican President Ronald Reagan who signed a bill on November 2, 1983, making the third Monday in January a federal holiday in observance of King’s legacy. The purpose originally was to honor MLK Day by designating

it as a national day of service in which all Americans would be encouraged to volunteer to improve their communities, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture. His focus was to honor the Constitution of the United States, and this could only be done if all citizens of our country were treated equally by law. He literally gave his life for that cause, and this certainly should be remembered. These holidays are important because they honor our heritage and pass it on to the next generation. It takes symbols to do this, and they need to be passed on or will be forgotten. This brings up our local Pennsylvania State House Representative for the 84th District, Joe Hamm, who recently accepted to be a member of the board of directors for the 9/11 Memorial Coalition. This is the organization that sponsors the county-wide motorcycle ride each year on the anniversary of the devastating attack on American soil on September 11, 2001. Truth be told, Joe Hamm has already been doing a great deal in supporting this iconic event in Lycoming County. Very few know how much effort goes into keeping this ride alive, especially through the COVID years when our dear,

wonderful bureaucrats in Harrisburg did everything they could to shut it down. Yes, as everyone knows, riding a motorcycle can result in catching COVID. And you also have to watch out for unicorns crossing the roads as well… There was nothing funny about September 11, 2001. Four days after that event, a small group of motorcyclists, including Catholic priest Father Manno, decided to ride up and down 3rd and 4th Streets in Williamsport. In a uniquely American kind of way, it was saying, “We’re still here…and we are not going to forget.” Out of this came a desire to continue this ride each year on the day of the attack, and thus the coalition board was formed. Over the next couple of decades, it expanded into a 37-mile ride in 13 different boroughs, townships, and the city of Williamsport, with thousands of onlookers of all ages waving flags and encouraging the riders.

Yes, the aftermath of that terrorist attack resulted in an upscale of military involvement in the Middle East, which resulted in many Americans suffering injuries and even losing their lives. But, as dreadful as this has been, it has not been in vain. The United States responded to an attack on our own soil, the first time that had happened since the War of 1812 with the British. The Japanese attack on our naval fleet in Pearl Harbor was tragic, but Hawaii was not yet a state. 9/11 was historic. It was meant to shatter our security of protection by two oceans on the east and west and two peaceful neighbors on the north and south. Our enemies wanted us to know we were vulnerable. Well, we got the message. The motto of the 9/11 Memorial Coalition is “We will never forget.” With committed government leaders like Joe Hamm and the other coalition board members, thousands of riders, and tens of thousands of onlookers participating in this iconic event. In my research, I have not found another ride in the USA that has existed since 2001 and is held on September 11, not just on weekends. This ride through Lycoming County is unique and might become legendary. My hope and dream is that one day, we will see the 9/11 Memorial Ride become as important as the Little League World Series. We can survive without baseball, but we will not survive if we lose our commitment and celebration of freedom.

Living Well…

Morning vs. Afternoon Workouts For Health?

I

n my 30+ years in health and wellness, I have gotten many questions. Some crazy, some not. Them, “Dave, what’s better, the treadmill or the stepper?” Me, “What do you currently use?” Them, “Nothing.” Me with a confused look, “Well, it doesn’t matter. Do something.”

Another question I have been asked is, “Is it better to work out in the morning or later in the day?” Again, if you are doing neither, it does not matter. Working out any time of the day is better than nothing. However, suppose you are working out very diligently. In that case, there may be some slight benefit

reducing metabolic syndrome. According to the NIH, metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that, when taken together, can increase a person’s risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other health problems. Another name for this condition is insulin resistance syndrome. Characteristics of metabolic syndrome include abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high blood

LIVING WELL triglycerides, and low HDL (highdensity lipoprotein). Some research suggests that as many as 1 in 3 people have metabolic syndrome in the United States. Current research strongly suggests that a supervised exercise program would have a positive effect on metabolic syndrome and general health, but the researchers aimed to find out if the time of day of the exercise would have any substantial impact on results. The study was made up of 139 people who were randomly placed into one of three groups — morning exercisers, afternoon exercisers, and a control. For the two exercise groups, the program was organized into 48 supervised, highintensity aerobic interval sessions over the course of 16 weeks. Body composition, cardiovascular fitness (via VO2 Max), fat oxidation, blood pressure, and blood metabolites were compared pre- and post-study. The researchers found that both exercise groups improved similarly

when compared to the control group in body composition, waist circumference, and diastolic blood pressure (bottom number), and VO2 Max. What was interesting about the findings was that researchers noticed that the morning exercise group showed improved results in systolic blood pressure (top number), plasma fasting insulin concentration, and insulin resistance. Overall, the study showed that morning exercise may be somewhat more efficient at reducing metabolic risk factors such as insulin sensitivity and systolic blood pressure. The bottom line is that exercising, regardless of the time of day, improves overall health and wellness and can reduce the incidence of serious diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Exercising in the morning may be slightly more effective for people working to gain every possible health advantage or who suffer from health issues such as metabolic syndrome.

arrington Place, a local fullservice banquet venue and offsite catering business, enjoys an enviable reputation and is one of the best-regarded new businesses that have debuted in recent years. One reason for earning this enviable reputation has been the talent and good work of its Executive Chef, Dave Knight. Knight has had a long-term and wideranging love for the culinary arts.

“I have had a love and appreciation for food for as long as I can remember. Growing up and spending summers traveling to the Middle East— my mother’s homeland — and where there were no grocery stores — our meals were cooked using fresh ingredients from the farmer’s markets as that was all that we had to cook with,” Knight told Webb Weekly. “My mother was a huge influence on my interest in food because she taught me about my

heritage and culture, what ingredients to look for, and how meals were much more than eating. It was a time to spend with family and friends in large groups, talking about the day’s events. It wasn’t meant to be eaten at 70 miles per hour out of a bag sitting on the passenger seat.” His more than 36-year career has been highlighted by various accomplishments, awards, and opportunities, including cooking for Presidents Bush and Clinton and cabinet members at the Willard Intercontinental during the campaign and inauguration. Also at the Hotel Teatro with the Kevin Taylor Group and the Westin Hotel in Denver cooking for President Obama and the Secret Service, where he was honored to receive a secret service pin, during his two campaigns. He also cooked for Jacques Pepin when he won the 7th Annual Pastry Chef Competition in New York City. His most memorable culinary moment was meeting Julia Child when she came and spoke at the New England Culinary Institute when he was in school there. “I continued to absorb information and educate myself about cooking during and after my formal schooling,” stated Knight. “I was further influenced by leaders in the industry, including Julia Childs and Auguste Escoffier, and my instructors Chef Jan Bandula, pastry instructor at Baltimore Culinary, and

Chef Josef Heroine at New England. He continued, “After making the decision to relocate my family back to the East Coast from Colorado was when I met Eric and Anna and began working for Farrington Place as a chef consultant as they expressed an interest in expanding their catering business and associated menus. “Within six months, I joined their team as their executive chef and have enjoyed bringing diversity to their menus and to the cultures we cater to. I appreciate how supportive they have been in listening to my perspectives and supporting exploration with a variety of ethnic cuisines; moving away from frozen and canned and towards fresh ingredients, allowing me to introduce made-from-scratch products such as breads and pastas; in-house processes such as fabrication of meats and fish; and redesigning the kitchen to be more efficient and purchasing equipment for expansion that allows us to do more which ultimately benefits our patrons. “The Pop-Up Restaurant idea brought a finer dining experience to the community and introduced them to global cuisine. I look forward to continuing these exclusive culinary dining experiences with the community as well as introducing them to global cuisine. I look forward to continuing

Award at the Fall 2023 River Valley Health and Dental’s Eat Around the World fundraiser,” Winters continued. “He selected Persian (Iran) food as his country, and it was the most popular of the ten attending chefs. “Dave brings a calmness to the kitchen that we’ve never seen before. It is not uncommon for us to cater multiple events at the same time, all with different menus and different guest counts. We cater events as small as 20 people to as large as 10,000. Dave is one of the few chefs that gets outside the kitchen and will drive to a wedding site (barn, tent, or another venue) and he cooks fresh on site. He’ll make the pasta sauces right on-site. He cooks the steaks fresh minutes before dinner. Everything he does he truly puts his heart into it. You can taste the difference. Dave’s work ethic truly stands out.” Winters concluded, “For me, I learn from Dave every single day. He’s always willing to teach, and he’s always patient.”

We love his attitude, calmness, e x p e r t i s e , knowledge, unique background and abilities,” Winters stated. “Dave has lived all over, traveled to many countries, and lived abroad. His expertise and what he brings back from these experiences are unmatched in this area. He loves to teach, and last year, we took on two very lucky interns from PCT. The experience they received and the personal one-onone time he was able to dedicate to these interns was an incredible experience for them. Not to mention the real-life cooking experience they got. “With Dave’s unique ethnic background, we’ve been able to enter the Indian market, providing traditional Indian foods for several weddings in the area. she made us. I watched her in the kitchen each night preparing a meal for us to sit down to. I love how she always puts mandarin oranges on a slice of iceberg lettuce to make the plates pretty. I never got to bond in the kitchen with her, but I got to watch my momma all those years growing up, and she made me the wife and mother I am today. We may have been water and oil in the kitchen together, but I still learned from her. We definitely are more in the kitchen together now that I am older, doing our canning in late summer and fall and then making Christmas cookies

rowing up, I wasn’t in the kitchen much with my momma. Once in a while, I would help her ice some whoopie pies or make nachos and cheese on Sunday nights. I remember making pizza Triscuits with her, too. But when it came to cooking dinner or baking, I didn’t help much other than setting the table and cleaning up. Momma says to this day she takes no credit for my cooking abilities — but that’s not fully true. I watched her pack lunches each morning for her family as we sat at the table eating the breakfast

together. I love cooking. I could spend all day in the kitchen preparing meals for our freezer or spend all day making one fancy dinner for my family. Baking. Well, let’s just say I don’t love Andrea McElroy it. I’m really good at it, though! I can make some slappin’ homemade cookies, sticky buns, and some decent cakes like a blueberry buckle. My momma, she loves baking. We are the complete opposite. She will make batches of cookies almost every week or every other. You don’t usually walk into her house, and there aren’t some kind of homemade sweets. I give all the credit to her sweet tooth. Momma loves her sweets. Ten years ago, I gave birth to a mini version of my mother. Kenzy Mae is a sugar-oholic! She does not necessarily drink sweets but eats her favorite things like Oreos, puddings, gummy bears, and brown sugar droppings left over from my homemade sticky buns. She’s always loved helping me in the kitchen — especially when it comes to sweets. I’ve always saved the spoons and spatula for my girl to lick since she

was little. The older she got, the more she wanted to be hands-on. For the past few years, she has helped me make lots of pumpkin rolls for Thanksgiving Eve. This year, she learned to make my sticky buns all by herself, and boy, is she so proud about that. Last Saturday, we were going to my Aunt Stacie’s for a Valentine’s party with our Liddick family. We didn’t get to see each other at Christmas, so she planned a gathering at her home for a little love party. I volunteered to make broccoli salad and banana brownie cake. That Friday, I surprised Kenz by picking her up at school and getting her McDonalds for a snack. (Can I just say that she wanted a slushy and Oreo blizzard at first!?) Proof that she loves sugar! I told her one or the other, so she settled with a cheeseburger and slushy. We went for a walk with our dog Bear out in our woods and visited with my dad, who lives right below us, for a few minutes. When we finally got inside, Kenzy insisted on helping me with food. I said, “Would you like to make the cake, and I’ll make the broccoli salad?” “Yeah!!!” she said with excitement. I was on the left side of our stove, chopping broccoli and frying. Kenzy to the right side of the stove with an apron on, mixing up her cake. Hair pulled back, laptop on for the recipe,

She loved knowing that her cake was a hit. It tastes like banana bread but even better. If you love bananas, give this a try. You are sure to love Kenzy’s Banana Brownies! makeup for different types of days; you can even have a hanging-at-home foundation) is Il Makiage’s Woke Up Like This foundation. This comes in up to 50 different shades and helps smooth and even the skin for a flawless natural finish. I wear this in combination with the Jones Road Miracle Balm mentioned above and MAC lipstick in “bated breath” for in-office work days. When looking for the best foundation, if possible, hit up the makeup counter and swatch some products on the side of your cheek or the back of your hand to see what the finish actually looks like. If the formula doesn’t look nice on your hand, it will not look great on your face. For online purchases, a lot of brands will have quizzes to determine your best match and pictures to compare your skin tone to various models. Check the return policy and see if there are any free trial sizes to swatch test upon delivery. And while some of these brands can be pricey, many offer discounts with subscriptions. So, if you find you love a product and intend on using it again, sign up for the subscription for the discount. Again, these are the products and brands I found that work best for me. You may have your go-to’s you already love. But if you’re looking to change things up, consider some of the points above. Next up, HOW to apply makeup for mature skin, in part 2.

and sodium hyaluronate. This is best for light-to-medium coverage, is super hydrating, and works for all skin types. I also really like this brand’s Miracle Balm, which can work as a blush, highlighter, or for an all-around glow. You can apply products with fingers or brushes for the best effect. Another brand I’d highly recommend is Dr. Jart’s. I’ve used a variety of their products, both skincare and cosmetics and have been pleased with the results. Their Premium BB Tinted Moisturizer features niacinamide, which reduces redness and the appearance of fine lines, and comes in SPF 40 for sun protection. This is a great product for both face and neck for a natural finish. Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint foundation also boasts niacinamide, as well as plantbased squalane that hydrates and is meant to visibly improve elasticity. The hydrating formula finishes super dewy and works with dry and combination skin. Kangaroos and Joeys: Finding Words Inside of Words By Joseph W. Smith III

A

ccording to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word kangaroo was introduced to English by Captain James Cook, who probably picked it up from Australian natives during his 1770 visit. The same source indicates that joey, a term for the kangaroo’s young, comes likewise from that far-off continent; it was originally a slang expression

indicating “anything young or small.” But Webb’s “Weird Words” is not concerned with Australian marsupials — except insofar as they loan us the term for an uber-cool linguistic phenomenon: It’s called a kangaroo word, and it means any term that contains its own synonym, with letters in the same order. For instance, the verb feast contains the letters E, A and T in that order — giving us a synonym for the longer word. Similarly, feasted contains the synonymous ate. And the same thing

occurs in such pairs as blossom and bloom; platter and plate; damsel and dame; gigantic and giant; market and mart; latest and last; prattle and prate; supremacist and racist; even something as simple as myself and me. In such cases, the smaller word is called a joey, indicating a little one that’s “in the pouch” — I guess. According to Wikipedia, kangaroo words often occur with the internal synonym intact. Instances include ACTion, MALIGNant and ADvertisement. But those aren’t nearly as much fun as, for example, deceased and departed — which both contain the word dead; or masculine, which yields the adjectival synonym male. (In fact, a term like ad is closer to something called a clip, where a word is simply shortened; this occurs, for example, in many school-related terms: aud, lav, prom, trig, bio, lit, math, etc.) In his fascinating book Tyrannosaurus Lex — where I first learned about kangaroo words — Rod L. Evans provides roughly 200 examples; and of course, various online sources contribute even more. You won’t likely find any list more thorough than the appendix for kangaroo words at Wiktionary; but I also like the long and clever list at hitbullseye. com. Examples from that include deteriorate, which contains both die and

rot. Likewise, prematurely contains early; and, as a precursor to my upcoming challenge below, see if you can find the four-letter synonym in precipitation. And to finish here for now, I will simply list a pile of “parent” words — and you, dear reader, can spend the week trying to locate each joey inside the kangaroo: Allocate, appropriate, astound, barren, before, Budweiser, calumnies, catacomb, chocolate, closemouthed, contaminate, contradictory, cooled, deliberate (as a verb), destruction, disappointed, disputation, encourage, equality, evacuate, exists, expurgate, falsities (same joey as “calumnies”), fragile, honorable, hurries, illuminated, indolent, inheritor, instructor, lighted (same joey as “illuminated”), municipality, ornamented, playfellow, precipitation, prematurely, postured, rambunctious, rampage, rapscallion, recline, respite, restrain, rotund, revolution, salvage, slithered, strives, substandard, tosspot (you might have to look up the meaning on that one), transgression and unsightly. Keep in mind that some of these lose just a couple of letters, whereas others — like playfellow and disappointed — get more drastically curtailed (or should I say … cut). Here’s hoping you can observe — or see, to put it more briefly — the shorter word inside the longer. Answers next week!

ith a continued focus on preparing students for industries of the future, Williamsport Area Middle School is building on an esports program where students can put their gaming skills to the test and compete against other esports teams from other schools across the state — all thanks to some recent grant funding. Sanctioned through the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Esports Association

(PIEA), the extra-curricular activity “is rapidly growing in K-12 education as a path for building science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) and social-emotional skills while increasing student engagement and opportunities for student inclusion,” according to Intel. “Today, many colleges and universities have esports intramural teams or offer esports degrees.” Allowing students to form teams

sportsmanship, teamwork, and safe, ergonomic game-playing techniques and strategies to stay healthy while gaming,” according to teacher Bob Rook, who oversees the program alongside colleagues Whitney Grimm and Ashley Muchler. The middle school esports program is made up of three components: – About 20-25 students attend a weekly club to learn about eports opportunities and participate in some gaming. – Intramural tournaments are held daily during the school’s Millionaire Block, a period designated for club time, during which the entire student body is eligible to participate. “Last fall, we had 27 two-player teams compete in a Rocket League tournament,” Rook said. “We are currently in the midst of 32-team twoplayer team NFL Madden tournament.” – Lastly, the school participates in an after-school esports league in which it competes against other schools across the state. Last fall, its Rocket League team went 3-2 in their five-game season. “We have lots of plans to expand our program here at WAMS and also hope that it will carry on at the high school

To give the program a boost, Rook reached out to the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation, which facilitated the receipt of a $17,369 venture grant from the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania through Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) donations received from C&N, First National Bank of PA, M&T Bank, High Industries, UPMC Health Plan and Woodlands Bank. The grant funds allowed Rook and his team to purchase the basic equipment — such as high-powered computers and monitors for gaming, chairs, tables, controllers, and PIEA-approved games — to outfit an “esports arena” in one of the school’s former computer labs. “With our new space, we hope to participate in three different leagues: Rocket League, Super Smash Brothers and Overwatch 2 beginning at the end of the month,” Rook said. “Our plan is to expand eligibility to all students in the school to participate in the afterschool portion of the program. Much like basketball, football, etc., we hope to have signups, tryouts and practices to try to put our best team or teams forward.”

Faith Q&A: Does God Exist? – Part Two

T

without beginning or end. Because He created us in His image, we, too, were designed for eternity. We know intuitively that death does not belong in our story. To live at peace with God, we must live in His presence both now and forever. Third, because God is the Creator. All that exists, all we can see and touch, has divine purpose. To live at peace with God, we must be live within His divine purpose. Fourth, because God is light. There is no darkness in God. None. He is light, and He has made us to live and thrive in light. To live at peace with God, we must be filled with His light, and we must walk in His light. Fifth, because God is love. By definition, love is relational. Every action of God is motivated by love. To live at peace with God, our every action must be motivated by love for Him and for each other. Look at the condition of humanity throughout history. It reveals a fundamental problem: humans are not living in the presence of God. The result is evil, darkness, chaos, suffering, hatred and hopelessness. The question is often asked, “Where did evil come from?” It sounds like a profound question, but if God exists, then evil isn’t a thing that had to be created. Evil is simply

current life? The words describe extremes; I’m just asking you to consider which ones your life is leaning toward. Take a pen and circle them: Peace/Stress. Love/Strife. Light/Darkness. Good/Evil. Purpose/ Meaninglessness. Clarity/Confusion. Freedom/Bondage. Abuse/Safety. Hope/ Fear. Unity/Division. Do your answers reveal a pattern? Is your life leaning toward light and love or toward darkness and evil? Friend, if God exists, and you are rejecting His presence, then you are rejecting the only thing that really matters in life. That’s what Wells meant by “nothing else matters.” It doesn’t have to be that way. God’s grace is drawing you toward light and love right now. How do I know that? Well, you’re still reading this article. If God wasn’t drawing you, I doubt you would have made it past the title. But you are still reading. Why? Is there something missing in your life? Are you tired of hopelessness and meaninglessness? Do guilt and regret rob you of peace and quiet? Are you longing for something more? My friend, there is a God. He is the source of light and love. He is drawing you right now. Believing He exists and believing He loves you and has a purpose for your life is the beginning of a life defined by the light and love of His presence. If God is drawing you, then talk to Him. Let Him know you believe He exists. He’s waiting to hear from you. Does God exist? It’s your decision to make. I’m praying you say yes.

he famous author, H.G. Wells, once observed, “If there is no God, nothing matters.” His statement was the topic of my previous “Does God Exist?” article. Previous articles are always available online at www.webbweekly.com. Wells’s quote included a second observation: “If there is a God, nothing else matters.” Remember, only one person can answer the question, “Does God exist?” That person is you. God does not have grandchildren. Our belief, or lack thereof, cannot be attributed to, blamed on, or passed along by anyone else. Our Godchoice is ours to make. Just be aware that your decision will have a profound effect on your life. Wells’ statement is based on the obvious. If almighty God exists, then living fully in His presence is vitally important. Why? First, because God is sovereign, there is nothing greater than God, and nothing exists outside of His sovereignty. There are no boundaries limiting His kingdom. Everything belongs to God, and everything is under His authority – including us. To live at peace with God, we must yield to His sovereign authority. Second, because God is eternal. He is

the absence of God’s presence – the absence of all that is good. Darkness, as we comprehend it, is the absence of light. Evil is the absence of good. Light and good exist because God is the source Tim of light and good. Hartzell Where God is rejected, evil and darkness are the result. The presence of God dispels darkness and evil. Does that sound like an oversimplification of a complex problem? It’s not. Consider your own life. When light and love increase in your life, the people around you experience increasing good. When light and love decrease in your life, the people around you experience decreasing good. It is a simple design: the presence of God increases light and good. If you decide to complicate or reject God’s design, then that’s on you. It indicates that you are unwilling to live under the sovereignty of the God of Light and Love. The result is increasing darkness and evil in and around your life. You can argue all you want with the simplicity of God’s design, but it won’t change the reality of it. Don’t take my word for it. Do a little selfevaluation. Consider the following words. Which ones are more descriptive of your

with Mexican riches crossed into Houston, and it was ripe for the looting. Antonio couldn’t stop thinking about it. He’d need six, maybe ten men and plenty of horses and mules. He imagined his wife smiling, wearing a golden chain around her neck. The loot would get his family through a years-long drought. ou’ve come for it all. No more waiting around. The time has come and you’re ready to do this thing, to seize it in its entirety. No more little bit, little bit, little bit, this is your birthright and you’ve come for it all – even if, as in the new novel, “The Bullet Swallower” by Elizabeth Gonzalez James, having it all could leave you in pieces. Jaime Sonoro was used to insistent fans. It was 1964, he was Mexico’s most popular, most-beloved singer, and it was common for fans to leave him gifts. But the woman who rushed to the front door of his home one afternoon and thrust a smelly book in his hands, well, that was extremely unusual. She’d muttered something about Jaime and his father being related to her, that everything Jaime needed to know was in that book, she demanded that he read it, and then she ran. Taking the moldering thing to his office, Jaime opened the large tome. And his eyes were opened. The book was filled with florid language and the tale of Jaime’s great-grandfather,

Gonzalez James says “is true except for the stuff I made up.” That honesty comes at the back of the tale, long after you’ve been rounded up and hog-tied to your chair, long after you’ve been tangled in chaparral and novel. More honesty: as the tale moves between 1895 and 1964 and back again, and you grow sympathetic to Antonio and start to hate Jaime just a little bit, you won’t care what’s true and what’s not. You’ll just want to spend every second of your time with this book. “The Bullet Swallower” is not just a tale for western-lovers. It’s got a Midcenturymodern flair, too, and something for the paranormal reader. Find this book: here, you’ll get it all.

ave you noticed general lower energy, and are feeling sad more often now that the days are shorter, and the weather is colder? If so, you may have a mood disorder called seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD is a form of depression triggered by circumstances connected to seasonal changes, like fewer hours of sunlight, but it is more than just the winter blues. What Is Seasonal Affective Disorder? SAD more commonly starts in the fall or winter, and often lasts until April or May. SAD affects about 5% of Americans, and it is four times more common in women than men. SAD is a subcategory of depression disorders, meaning symptoms of seasonal depression generally align with those under the broader depression umbrella. Symptoms include, but are not limited to: – Persistent feelings of hopelessness – Avoidance of social situations and/or increased sensitivity to social rejection – Body aches – Cravings for carbohydrates – Overeating and/or binge eating – Decreased activity level

– Fatigue and daytime sleepiness – Irritability – Decreased sex drive – Tiredness – Trouble concentrating – Sleep disturbances – Weight gain The cause of SAD is still debated among experts, but some research suggests that disruptions of your internal body clock (circadian rhythm) associated with the change in amount of daylight, resulting in more production of melatonin (a hormone that regulates the sleepwake cycle), is significantly responsible for triggering SAD symptoms. Other research offers evidence that dysregulated serotonin levels and/or low vitamin D levels are primarily responsible for SAD. Additionally, if you have a family history and/or have been diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder, you are more susceptible to be affected by SAD. Treating Seasonal Affective Disorder You may not think you need medical attention, but if SAD is causing you distress or difficulties in your everyday functions, you should seek help from a doctor or therapist. Like with other forms of depression, there is no single treatment for SAD. Getting help generally includes consulting with a care team to determine

the Northeast, you cannot get enough vitamin D from just sunlight alone during the winter months when the sun is lower in the sky. The recommended daily allowance for vitamin D is 600 IUs per day. If you are over the age of 70, you should try to get 800 IUs per day. Talk to your doctor about testing your vitamin D levels and if supplements would be right for you. Exercise regularly – Exercise can help alleviate SAD symptoms, as it does with other forms of depression. Exercising outdoors during the day can be even more helpful as it gets you out into the daylight. It is important to remember that SAD is a form of depression. If you experience symptoms that are affecting your quality of life, talk to your primary care provider or a mental health professional as effective treatments are available. If you or someone you know has thoughts of suicide or self-harm, get help right away. You can call or text 988 for help. which combination of treatments and supportive solutions are best for you. Some options for coping with SAD include: Psychotherapy therapy – During psychotherapy therapy, you discuss your feelings and symptoms with a licensed mental health professional. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most common form of psychotherapy utilized in treating SAD. Your therapist can help you figure out what’s causing your depression and help you find ways to manage symptoms. Medicinal treatment – Doctors may prescribe antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or antipsychotics. These focus on some of the chemicals in your brain to help control your depression. Medicines may take a while to work, and you may need to try a few different types before finding the right one. Your doctor will monitor you for side effects. Light therapy – Getting enough light is important to combat the effects of SAD. Try to get outside as much as possible during the day and take advantage of what sunlight is available. Light therapy boxes can also help as they mimic sunshine while filtering out harmful UV rays. The light from the therapy boxes is brighter than regular light bulbs. To help with SAD symptoms, try sitting in front of a lightbox for approximately 20 minutes a day. Increase vitamin D – If you live in

or many, enjoying a small indulgence can serve as a reward for a job well done or a moodboosting pick-me-up. In fact, mindful snacking is on-trend for a majority of consumers. According to Mondelez International’s Fourth Annual State of Snacking Global Consumer Trends Study, 78% are choosing small indulgences to pamper themselves and 68% are checking nutrition labels on snacks. With today’s changing palates and the growing demand for sour, less sweet foods and beverages, a superfruit like tart cherries can help snackers permissibly indulge without the guilt. Primarily grown on small family farms in the United States, Montmorency tart cherries - also referred to as sour cherries - are available yearround in dried, juice and juice concentrate, canned and frozen forms. More than 110 scientific research studies show Montmorency tart cherries are a superfruit. In addition to their sweetsour taste and unique nutrient profile, research suggests tart cherries — one of the few natural food sources of melatonin — may help improve sleep, aid in exercise recovery, reduce inflammation, ease arthritis symptoms, improve gut health and promote heart health. The Roving Sportsman… It’s Bluebird Time! By Jon Pries

I

n the early years of growing up in the countryside of Lycoming County, it was a tradition to watch for the early arrival of robins — signaling the soon to occur arrival of spring. It usually meant that the winter weather and snowfalls were about to be replaced with warmer temperatures, daffodils, and green grass. For me, the arrival of the robins is not as anticipated as the arrival of bluebirds. As they begin to leave their winter hangouts and appear more often outside the kitchen window perched on the garden fencing or on the top branches of nearby blueberry bushes, I wonder what can be done to keep them around so we can enjoy seeing them more often. It may surprise some, but bluebirds actually do not migrate south for the winter months; instead, they move deeper into nearby forests to spend the colder months. They reappear in early spring once the temperatures have warmed up.

The Eastern Bluebird inhabits our area and is a member of the Thrushes Family Turdidae, which includes the Woods Thrush and the American Robin, and has the scientific name Sialia sialis. Blue on its head, back, tail, and wings, it has a rust-red colored breast and likes open country with scattered trees, orchards, and farmland, where it dines on insects, worms, and berries. They are always welcomed by gardeners, as their diet is largely made up of insects caught on the ground, such as caterpillars, beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, and spiders. In the winter, while they hide in the deeper woods, they feed on large amounts of fruit, such as blueberries, black cherry, dogwood berries, and honeysuckle. They often perch on wires or fence posts overlooking open fields. They will flutter to the ground to grab an insect or sometimes will catch their prey in midair. The boxes and tree cavities where bluebirds nest are in great demand by the birds that require holes for nesting, and the male

yard may be your best opportunity to increase the presence of bluebirds. You can find plans for building these boxes on the internet and even view videos on YouTube of how to build them. If you prefer, bluebird box kits are available from the Pennsylvania Game Commission. They are reasonably priced at $11.00 each, plus shipping, and include all of the necessary wood pieces, screws, and nails for complete assembly. These boxes should be mounted between 3 to 6 feet above the ground. Research has shown that bluebirds prefer boxes that face east, followed by

a box facing north, south, or west. Tree swallows are the greatest competitor for these boxes. To increase the possibility of their use by bluebirds, they should be put up in pairs. The pair should be placed 15-20 feet apart, and the pairs of houses should be located 300 feet from each other. Boxes should be cleaned out before their first use in the spring and subsequently should be cleaned out of all nesting material immediately after a brood leaves to encourage the reuse for another brood. Once you have established several bluebird nesting boxes, they will provide you with a great opportunity

to enjoy this beautiful bird as it nests and feeds in your own backyard. The only upkeep required is the annual cleanout of the boxes. Bluebirds prefer to build their own nest in an empty box each spring. As I sighted several bluebirds checking out my nesting boxes a few days ago, I suddenly realized I had not yet cleaned them out from last year’s nesting season. As I checked the 14 boxes, I discovered all had been used the previous season, but I also discovered that at some point, 9 of them had been taken over by field mice! In fact, 4 of them still had mice living in them!

bluebirds will attack other species if they are considered a threat. The male bluebird attracts a female by carrying nesting material into and out of the nest. Once the female enters the nest, the pair establishes a bond that often remains for several seasons. Thereafter, the female does all the nest building and may use the same nest to hatch and rear multiple broods. She will lay between 2-7 eggs and may produce up to 3 broods throughout the season. As informative and interesting as these numbers are, I still suspect that the interest in hunting has dropped in recent years. On the other hand, wildlife viewing seems to be gaining in interest, and that’s especially obvious when it comes to visiting Pennsylvania’s elk country, where you will often find plenty of people and vehicles gathered to view the growing elk herd. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service surveys take place every five years, so it will be interesting to see what figures they come up with the next time around.

Most of the wildlife watchers were bird watchers — 93 million of the 148 million focused on bird watching. It was interesting to note that recreational shooters and archers had high participation among the 6-15 age group, but those numbers dropped considerably in the 16-17 age group. Molinas was killed while standing in the backyard of his Los Angeles home. A shooter hiding in a neighbor’s yard fired five shots in the darkness, hitting Molinas in the head. His girlfriend and dog were wounded in the attack. Police did not rule out a mob-related murder. Chaney, who played for the Billies in 1963-66, which included a brief tenure as the team’s coach, went on to collegiate coaching greatness at Temple University from 1982-2006. Despite occasional discrimination faced by players, Chaney held his time in Williamsport in high regard.

“You know, it was extraordinary. Not many black people lived in some of the towns, but Williamsport respected the players. We never had any problems there.” The Billies team name was a matter of conjecture. Some felt it was named after team founder and longtime Williamsport businessman Bill Pickelner. Others claim the name stemmed from the city’s nickname of Billtown. Whatever the origin, the Williamsport Billies provided local basketball fans with 17 years of Saturday night excitement.

Williamsport tenure, the Billies made the league playoffs in 11 seasons and won EBA titles in 1950, 1953, and 1954. Rosters fluctuated yearly, but some of the great collegiate players of the era wore the local colors.; including John Chaney, Columbia University’s Chet Forte (who later was the TV director for the first Monday Night Football game), Michigan State great Julius McCoy; Penn State’s Jesse Arnell; Al Seiden of St. Johns; NYU’s Cal Ramsey; and Jack Molinas of Columbia. Of the group, Molinas drew the most attention both for his on-court play and his off-court problems. After graduating from Columbia, the 6’6” center was drafted by the NBA’s Ft. Wayne Pistons in 1953 and, in 32 games, averaged 11 points per game, but was soon banished from the league for gambling on Piston games. In joined the Billies in 1954 and played with the team until 1959. In 1956, he was named the Eastern League’s most valuable player, averaging 27.3 points per game. In 1963, Molinas was convicted for his role in a collegiate point-shaving scandal and was sentenced to 10-15 years in prison. He served five years of the sentence and was paroled in 1968. The Billies played their home games at the Williamsport Armory and later at the old Roosevelt Junior High gym on West Fourth Street, drawing near-capacity crowds for every game. If you love good basketball, it was the place to be on a Saturday night. As a young basketball fan, I was a faithful follower of the Boston Celtics in the days of Bill Russell, Sam Jones, and John Havlicek. Back then, a Sunday afternoon telecast was about all TV had to offer. But the Billies brought a high quality of exciting basketball right here in town. On Saturday nights, I always tried to arrive as soon as the doors opened to watch the players warm up, seemingly bigger than life before my eyes. Because of the limitations mentioned above, the Eastern League was full of talented players. They had regular jobs during the week but played on weekends for the love of the game. Their pay was minimal, ranging from $50 to $250 a game, paid after each game in cash from the box office take. With rosters featuring a bevy of talented college stars, during their
