From the Editor…

Happy New Year!

T

his is easily my favorite issue of the year, it’s hard not to get a little choked up thinking about all the fantastic organizations that my co-workers and I get to support this week, from furbabies to farm babies to families and vets and the great outdoors! This week’s issue is just one of the many ways Jimmy helps people and our community throughout the year. He would kill me if I actually listed it all out, but y’all have no idea how much Jimmy gives back to our area every year. He wouldn’t want the recognition, but he deserves it anyway. So, thank you, Jimmy. Not only for the opportunity you give us to help out our favorite organizations, but for all you do the other 51 weeks of the year for so many people in our area. On to the details about this week’s issue: For the past eight years, Jimmy has given each full-time employee a page of the paper to donate to the charity of their choice. We all get to pick something that is near and dear to us and donate ad space, editorial space, or a combination of both. As you can see on the cover, we have a

variety of organizations from across the area that we donated space to this week. I’m sure that you are familiar with most, and you can learn about what they do in more detail as you read through this issue, but here is a quick rundown: Consolidated Sportsman of Muncy Creeks: The Sportsmen manage two trout nurseries in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission at the Faus Nursery in Hughesville and the Bob King Nursery at Roaring Run. Enchanted Ever After: Enchanted Ever After is a non-profit farm animal sanctuary located in Turbotville. Family Promise of Lycoming County: Family Promise of Lycoming County empowers families to become and remain self-sufficient by breaking the cycle of homelessness, provides community awareness and advocacy, and creates mission opportunities for individuals and faith-based communities. Hyner Lodge Foundation: The Hyner Lodge Foundation promotes the Veteran’s wellness and recovery by providing activities that support the integral health and well-being of the individual. Families and caregivers are allies in their healing

They are all amazing local organizations that are doing what they can to help in our area. So, thank you again, Jimmy. Doing things like this makes me so proud to be a Webb Weekly employee. I hope that as you read through the ads/editorials about these charities, you will consider adding them to your 2024 donation lists if you are able. Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you and yours! Do you have your resolutions ready to go? I haven’t started on this year’s resolutions yet, so 2024’s ain’t lookin’ real great. In case you are curious, you’ll be happy to know that as of the Tuesday before Christmas, I still don’t have everything done. Did I also order things that will be hit or miss on whether they will get here on time? Yes. Do I still have to buy absolutely everything that I need for Christmas dinner? Yes. It’s fine. I am overly organized and efficient in pretty much every other aspect of my life. I have no idea why Christmas is my weak spot, but I’ll get it figured out eventually. Probably. One last reminder. Please be safe if you are headed out to ring in the New Year. Drink responsibly. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t text and drive. Wear a seatbelt.

he turn of one year to another year, 2023 to 2024, is always a time of transition and change, and very often, some events of great importance, and that transition from 1958 to 1959 — 65 years ago — was no exception. In the days leading up to the beginning of the New Year, the Williamsport City Council approved a 1959 city budget of $1,471,819, with the tax millage remaining the same for 1959 as it was for 1958 — 14.75 mills. Thomas Levering was mayor of Williamsport and was preparing for a re-election campaign in 1959, in which he was ultimately successful. In sports, shortly before the beginning of the New Year, what was regarded as the “greatest football game ever played” took place when the Baltimore Colts prevailed over the New Giants, 23-17, in the first sudden-death overtime playoff game. It ended when the Colts’ Alan Ameche crashed in for the winning touchdown from about the five-yard line. Locally, the Williamsport Billies professional basketball team was in the middle of a bad season. They would go 9-19, despite having such good players as Jack Molinas, Julius McCoy, and Jesse Arnelle.

BETTER HEARING IS ALWAYS A SOUND INVESTMENT

The St. Joe’s basketball was the best schoolboy team locally, with standouts like Joey Prato, Charley Pagana, and Tom Eiswerth. In college football bowl games played on New Year’s Day, the LSU Tigers clinched the national championship with a 7-0 win over a stubborn Clemson team in the Sugar Bowl. The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated California 38-12 in the Rose Bowl. Oklahoma defeated Syracuse, featuring Ernie Davis, 21-6 in the Cotton Bowl. The Air Force played TCU to a scoreless tie in what was regarded as an upset in the Orange Bowl. At the movies locally, at the Rialto was “Gigi,” starring Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, and Louis Jourdan. “The Girl in the Bikini,” starring Brigit Bardot, was featured at the Keystone, and at the Capitol was Jerry Lewis starring in “The Geisha Boy.” The top five hits on the Hit Parade that New Year’s were: 1. “The Chipmunk Song” with Alvin and the Chipmunks. 2. “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” by the Platters. 3. “Tom Dooley” by the Kingston Trio. 4. “To Know Him Is to Love Him” by the Teddy Bears. 5. “One Night” by Elvis Presley.

At the local A&P markets, a small ham was selling for 43 cents a pound, pork loins for 25 cents a pound, and a large Jane Parker apple pie sold for 39 cents. The first three New Year’s babies were born to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Waltz, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dills, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Frahn Jr. In international and national news, Fidel Castro and his rebels triumphantly marched in Havana as previous dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country. Dwight Eisenhower was the reassuring, grandfatherly presence in the White House, and David Lawrence was about to begin his term as Governor of Pennsylvania. The weather locally on that New Year’s was a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with a high temperature of 39 degrees and a low of 23 degrees. The nasty weather was probably responsible for the 13 traffic accidents that happened locally; fortunately, none resulted in serious injury. The first fire of the New Year, locally, happened at the Stewart Artificial Ice Plant at 739 First Street, but it was not a serious fire and resulted in little damage. City police reported that there were five traffic fatalities in the city during 1958, the most since 1953, which also had five deaths. This is just a little snapshot of what was going on 60 years ago on New Year’s 1959.

Leave any valuables at home so as to not tempt would-be thieves. Look Both Ways: Though you are likely smart enough not to drive impaired that doesn’t mean that doesn’t mean that everyone else is. The most hazardous day of the year is New Year’s Day, particularly during the early hours. Look both ways before crossing the street, and don’t leave anything to chance. Stop signs, traffic signals, and oneway arrows mean little to someone who has been partying hard. If you are driving, go slow and watch for people crossing the street or stepping into traffic. Be a Great Host: If you are hosting a party, make sure to keep an eye on your guests. Watch for people drinking too much alcohol and/or drinking too quickly. Keep food on hand, such as sandwiches, pretzels, and rolls, to help fill stomachs and slow alcohol absorption. Make sure smoke alarms are in good order, and be ready to call

a cab or some other ride for tipsy guests. Have non-alcoholic drink options, and don’t serve minors. Fireworks: If you plan on setting off fireworks, check with authorities regarding local ordinances to make sure if it is even allowed. If necessary, leave the fireworks to the professionals. Some fireworks burn at over 2,000 degrees, so needless to say, booze and fire do not mix! Ensure you have water on hand and a large, open space designated for the show. If you have pets, skipping the fireworks altogether would probably be a good idea, as the noise scares most animals and may even lead to injury. While it is important to have fun ringing in the New Year, the most important thing is that you and your loved ones live to celebrate the next one. If you drink, do so in moderation, and definitely don’t drive. Watch out for others both on the road and off, and always keep safety in mind.

esolving to commit to better self-care can happen any time of the year, but there’s something about the calendar flipping to a new year that signals a fresh start. It’s the perfect starting point for new habits and a new approach to protecting your overall wellness. Self-care takes many forms. Maintaining a well-balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise are some ways to promote your physical health. So is taking good care of your body’s largest organ: your skin. When it comes to mental health, getting organized is a surprisingly effective way to manage stress and keep your goals on track so you feel a sense of accomplishment. Start working toward a new year where your wellness is front and center with these ideas for simplifying and personalizing your journey. Look for more lifestyle advice and helpful wellness tips at eLivingtoday.com. Prepare for Healthier Eating Habits Portion control is a common challenge when you kick off a healthier eating plan. One way to keep your meals on the modest side is preparing them ahead of time. Meal prep containers make it easy to have freshly prepared foods in moderate portions ready

whenever you’re ready to eat. Look for compartments that let you enjoy a main dish and at least one side, and be sure the containers seal tightly to keep food fresh and prevent leaks. Add Whole Grains with Ease and Convenience Eating whole grains has never been this easy or tasty. Convenient and ready in just 10 minutes, Minute Rice’s Instant Brown Rice and Rice & Quinoa are must-haves for busy families. For those in need of an on-the-go option, Minute Rice Cups, including Brown Rice, Brown & Wild Rice, Brown Rice & Quinoa, Multi-Grain Medley and Jasmine Rice & Red Quinoa, are ready in just 60 seconds. Start the year off right and discover more time-saving solutions at MinuteRice.com. the job. Runners in particular should be conscious of quality shoes. Look for ample cushion, comfortable ankle support, overall quality construction and a snug fit that gives your toes some wiggle room. Even slight variations can affect your comfort, so trying on different options is likely your best path toward finding the perfect fit. Introduce Weights for Your Workout Whether you’ve hit a plateau or you’re just bored with your workout, adding dumbbells can introduce a whole new dimension by helping build muscle and burn more fat. Rotating muscle groups lets you give your muscles a chance to recover between workouts. The options are nearly endless, so think about how you’ll use them, where you’ll store them, whether shape or color matters and how much you want to spend. Make Skin Care a Personal Priority Your skin tells an important story about your overall health. Protecting it from harsh elements and sun damage can help ensure your skin stays supple and strong, providing the barrier it’s meant to as it protects the rest of your body. Even seemingly minor irritations like dry skin can be problematic as scratching or cracking can lead to wounds and infection. Rely on a regular moisturizer and be conscious of applying sunscreen whenever you’ll

be outdoors. Plan for Success in the New Year Give yourself a boost toward tackling this year’s goals by getting organized. A planner can help you keep important information at your fingertips while making it easy to keep tabs on appointments, deadlines and more. You can even track progress against new habits or journal your way toward a heathier diet. When I got out of the military, I went to the VA office to see about my benefits. I was told that my records could not be found so there was nothing that could be done for me. A few months later I was told to go see David Bower. Within six months of my initial appointment with Dave and his staff, not only were my military records found, but I was also awarded my monthly compensation. I would and will always talk highly about Dave and his staff.” - John

Donating to The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a wonderful way to help our veterans gain access to a wide variety of services. The VFW, located at 20 Bellefonte Avenue in Lock Haven is an accredited benefits center, operating under the National VFW and the VFW Department of Pennsylvania. This center services the north Pennsylvania area with three accredited service officers and three support personnel. Donations to the VFW will assist our Veterans with healthcare enrollment, GI Bill applications, VA work study, filing claims and appeals, personnel and treatment record requests, requests for and presentation of military medals, military research, retirement applications, house calls, and CRSC/ CRDP applications. This center will also provide Veterans with emergency assistance requests through collaboration with local and state organizations. The VFW also accepts donations of hospital beds, scooters, walkers, and other ambulatory devices. These items are dispersed as needed to other Veterans in need. Donations are extremely important to our cause and we wholeheartedly appreciate your involvement.

Winter Skin Care Hacks

T

he weather outside is frightful, and while that fire may be delightful, it’s also probably drying out your skin. With the stress of the holidays, the drop in the mercury, and the exhaustion of modern life, winter provides us with a whole new set of skincare challenges. FUN! With the cold weather and central heating joining forces, it’s only a matter of time before your skin feels the effects. Cue irritation, dry and flaky patches in odd places, and that uncomfortable, tight feeling to pinpoint just a few gripes. Here is a rundown of some skin care hacks to try in the winter months ahead. First, apply your most hydrating products to damp skin. In the winter, humidity is low, requiring as much moisture as you can get to protect your skin barrier. When you apply products on top of damp skin, you add moisture from the water and trap it in with your skincare. This goes for both face and body. The simple hack here is to keep a moisturizer in the bathroom and lather up after you’ve showered. This technique is even more beneficial

if your moisturizer contains a humectant. This ingredient locks in moisture like hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, or glycerin, which are found in most products. Olay and CeraVe are common brands that boast such ingredients. Next, and this one pains me a bit, avoid excessive fragrance. If you already use perfume or a body spray, having skincare products with scent can be aggravating during the winter. You may usually tolerate smelly skincare products; however, the dry air of January, February, and March can create more skin sensitivity and cause irritation. Even a fragrance in a cleanser, something you wash off, can cause inflammation. Instead, stick to bland skincare products like Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream or Bare Mineral’s Ageless Phyto-Retinol Night Concentrate cream. If, like me, you enjoy wearing fragrance, you can still sport your signature scent in winter. Instead of spraying on your skin, spritz it through your hair and clothes. During cold weather, we tend to wear more occlusive or less breathable clothing like turtlenecks and

If you suffer from dry skin, it may be tempting to pile on a thicker moisturizer. However, overdoing it could result in more harm than good, especially if said moisturizer contains pore-clogging ingredients like paraffin oil, petrolatum, lanolin, and mineral oils. Not all dry winter skin is a result of too cold outside and too hot inside. It can also be caused by inflammation from over-moisturizing. Instead, layer products from thinnest to thickest to give your skin a chance to absorb thin layers rather than blasting it with something thick and sticky. Lastly, avoid cleansing mistakes. Foaming cleansers are great for oily and acne-prone skin, but they can be drying in the wintertime. If you’re using a foamy wash and it works for you, great, but for dry skin, a creamier cleanser, like Burt’s Bees Sensitive Solutions Gentle Cream Cleanser, may be better suited for winter. Also, be sure to rub in your cleansers for at least one minute and clean it all the way off with 10-12 good splashes of water. Hopefully, some of these tricks and product suggestions will help you avoid the dreaded dry skin of winter, and that the new year finds you merry and bright! And well-moisturized.

chunky sweaters. If you apply scent to your skin and then cover up that skin, it can cause irritation. So, instead of your neck, spray your scarf. Of course, scented or not, use your Bernadette skincare products Ulsamer judiciously. You may think you have to stop using active ingredients like retinol and exfoliating acids in winter. But in fact, you can keep using products with these ingredients, just not as often. Use retinol one evening, then an exfoliate the next night, and then take two nights “off ” to give your skin a break. Also, consider scaling down the percentage of active ingredients during the winter to maintain the benefit but reduce the irritation. If you’re coming to the end of your 5-7% glycolic acid toner, look at trying a lower percentage product for winter. Same goes for retinol, which can exacerbate dry, irritated skin in the cold. It’s also important to wear sunscreen daily, even with an overcast sky, especially when using active ingredients, as they can make skin sensitive to sunlight.

The Discipline of Surrender Note: This is the tenth article in a series called Overcoming the Five Failures of Us. Previous articles are always available at www.webbweekly.com.

n response to God’s convicting and awakening grace, we have the opportunity to take important steps on the narrow road that leads to redemption. Our first step is confession. We talked about confession in last week’s article. Our second step is surrender. The

word surrender has several meanings. The first is the declaration of defeat that brings about the end of fighting and hostilities. For many of us, coming to a place of surrender in our relationship with God required fighting and hostility, not with God, but with our own defiant and stubborn pride. We didn’t want to give up the control of life to God or bend the knee to confess Jesus Christ is Lord. We fought against it — and suffered the painful consequences of our choices.

adding quality to life every day

Our confession and surrender marked the end of hostility fueled by our stiffnecked defiance. Stiff-necked — See Exodus 32:9 and Acts 7:51. Surrender can also be defined as an act Tim Hartzell of willing submission to authority. Surrender is a powerful expression of worship — an act of willing submission to the sovereignty of Almighty God. Paul described it this way in Romans 12:2, Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship. We humans struggle with the concept of surrender. It’s probably because God endowed us with divine traits and empowered us with earthly authority. We learn this from Genesis 1:26-28. Made in God’s image, we are lured into the trap of thinking we are gods — or at least kings of the jungle and masters of our own destiny. We defiantly reject God’s sovereignty and are unwilling to bow the knee and confess Jesus Christ is

Lord. It is our undoing. The Discipline of Surrender The Scriptures are full of warnings against pride and arrogance, so we’ll let God’s Word speak to us. I use the word constantly in each statement because surrender isn’t a one-time thing — it’s an every-moment discipline in the surrendered Christian life. 1. Constantly surrender pride and arrogance. Romans 12:3: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment. James 4:6, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Psalm 51:17: My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. 2. Constantly speak of God’s greatness. Isaiah 55:9, God’s ways are higher than our ways. Acts 7:49, The heavens are the throne of God, and the earth is his footstool. Romans 9:20, But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? You can also read Romans 11:33-36 and Job 42:1-6. 3. Constantly yield to God’s sovereignty over our lives.

– 24-hour Crisis Hotline – (800) 326-8483 – Confidential, Safe and Secure Emergency Shelter – The YWCAʼs Wise Options shelter provides refuge for survivors of violence in a safe and secure site and is the only shelter of its kind in Lycoming County. Rapid Rehousing Wise Options provides survivors experiencing homelessness or attempting to flee with housing search, coordination with landlords, case management, and rental assistance. Counseling & Advocacy Trained counselors and advocates work with survivors as they navigate their paths to rebuild their lives, recognizing every journey is unique. Legal Advocacy Advocates assist survivors through court and hospital accompaniment, providing emotional support, explanation of legal terms and processes, and safety planning.

Protection from Abuse (PFA) Orders PFAs are orders used to refrain an abuser from continuing to harm victims. The YWCA is the first and only stop in Lycoming County to obtain and fi le for a Protection from Abuse order. Survivor Support Groups These groups provide opportunities for survivors of domestic and sexual violence to come together and offer one another support through developing trusting and caring relationships. Domestic violence can be any form of violence against an intimate partner. It can be physical, emotional, verbal, economical, spiritual, or sexual. Itʼs not always the visible bruises one can see. Abusers display a variety of behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, and threaten their victims. Domestic violence does not discriminate and happens to both men and women of all ages, races, and various economic back-

grounds. A former Wise Options client shared just how meaningful the program was in their life. “I can now sleep peacefully at night without the fear of physical injury because of what the advocates at Wise Options did for me”. From July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023, the YWCAʼs Wise Options program provided 47,525 nights of safe shelter to adults and children fleeing violence, serving 1,695 individuals – 213 of them were under the age of 18. The YWCA Northcentral PA is dedicated to ensuring their critical and life-saving services are offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The crisis hotline provides emotional support, domestic violence advocacy, community referrals, safety planning and crisis intervention. The hotline is accessible 24/7 by calling (800)326-8483. James 4:13-17, Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. You can also read Luke 12:16-21. Jesus warns us against thinking we have control over anything. 4. Constantly remember that God alone is the eternal Judge. James 4:6-12, But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

igina

In Matthew 10:28, Jesus warns us about God’s eternal judgment: Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 5. Constantly surrender fear and worry through trust. I John 4:17-18, There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. Trust is a powerful form of surrender. God will ask us to do hard things and to take risks. Surrendering to His sovereign love and will set us free from fear and worry. Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. In response to God’s convicting and awakening grace, confession and surrender lead us forward on the road to redemption. In the New Year, I pray that God’s grace will allow us the blessing of traveling that road together as we continue our Faith Conversations. Happy New Year — and to God be the glory! l Leag

his marks my eighth year of covering county government, and I am being very honest in saying that I enjoyed this year above them all. I am a person who likes to focus on the positives and not just dwell on the negatives, and there were many positives for the county in this past year. In June, the county completed the innovative bridge bundling program, which took a lot of energy to get off the ground, but ultimately dealt with 17 different bridges throughout the county that were considered structurally deficient. The municipalities in which these bridges were located also had to pitch in, but without the county’s help, it was very, very doubtful this would have been accomplished. This idea was so innovative that other PA counties have taken note and are considering doing the same. A big hats off to a number of folks in the Lycoming County Planning & Community Development Department who helped pull off this exceedingly inventive initiative. In October, Lycoming County Coro-

ner Chuck Kiessling found that after a decade and a half of complaining, you can finally get your wish. The reasons that it took so very, very, very long to finally find a home for the operations of the county coroner would more likely take a book to explain rather than a paragraph or two that I have here. But suffice to say that the coroner is one of the most dedicated and hardworking individuals that Lycoming County employs and this new facility is truly a godsend for everyone involved. There were troubles as well, such as two fires in June at the county landfill in the space of a week. Landfill fires are extremely dangerous as they can liter-

COUNTY HALL ally burn for years and even decades. The fact that they were extinguished so quickly is a great tribute to the landfill staff themselves and the 14 local fire companies that so quickly responded. Few people are aware that the landfill works very closely with these local fire companies to prepare for just such emergencies. Hats off to Director Jason Yorks, Chief Training & Risk Management Officer Al Little at the Lycoming County Resource Management Services, and those local volunteer fire companies that do so much and get so

little recognition for it. One of the year’s biggest events was the awarding of ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) Funds, which took place right at the beginning of the year. The county had $22 million they could dispense, and they received $78 million in requests, which meant the commissioners were definitely going to disturb a lot of people by their choice of where the money would go. They had decided on the front end to focus exclusively on projects that were “generational,” meaning projects that

would still be used by future generations. They also went the second and third mile to ensure they gave everyone a fair chance. Even US Senator Bob Casey Jr. recognized this. When he visited Williamsport in January while doing a road trip around the Commonwealth to inquire of the various county governments how they were planning on spending their ARPA funds that he had voted for in Congress, he was truly impressed by what he saw here. Senator Casey told the three commissioners that their diligence and project design should be a model for the entire state. The three commissioners, Scott Metzger, Tony Mussare, and Rick Mirabito have done a lot for our county these past four years. Scott Metzger took the place of Jack McKernan in 2020 and also the presidency of the board and will continue in that capacity in the coming years. His experience and stability will be greatly needed as the county is losing two very experienced and dedicated individuals. We will miss Commissioners Tony Mussare and Rick Mirabito for their service in a very demanding position since 2016. Being of opposite parties, they were certainly not on the same page one hundred percent of the time. In fact, I remember once at a meeting in 2017, the two of them went back and forth for almost an hour over an

issue relating to the hotel tax fees. Yet, behind the scenes, I knew that all three of these commissioners had respect for each other, and though they obviously did not agree on everything, they were open to listening and learning from one another. Rick Mirabito had been a Pennsylvania state representative, and his knowledge of how that body worked in Harrisburg was very helpful several times. Tony Mussare runs a store in Williamsport and understands the stress and strain of small businesses and also how important these are to a community such as we have in Lycoming County. The insights from both men were often used and were often helpful. So, as 2023 fades away and we say goodbye to Rick and Tony, we can thank them greatly for leaving their office better than where they found it. And as we welcome the new year, we wish the very best success for the newly elected commissioners, Republican Marc Sortman and Democrat Mark Mussina. May they approach their public office with unwavering diligence and integrity, display a dedication to the entire county community, and possess a desire to leave a legacy of excellence that would be an example for those who will follow them. Just like their predecessors did… Happy New Year to all!

Hey girl — heyyyyy!! She was not at our reunion, and I gave her heck about it when I had seen her for the first time in years at Filippo’s restaurant. She was our waitress. I said how it was so good to see everyone and catch up. She said, “Well, I feel like I know you and your family. I have some truly great ones this year, and I could never share them all, but I will share a few that have really stuck with me this year. First off, I get your “fan mail.” THANK YOU to those who have written to me. I save every single one! Secondly, I heard a lot of you refuse to cut a coupon if my recipe is on the back, so you will call Jaimie, our classified rep and all around office guru at the Webb, for a second copy. When Jaimie told me this, my heart melted. I do have a website, www.andreascountryhomecookin. com. You can find many of my recipes there if you REALLY want that coupon. Haha! I have run into old teachers of mine, fellow students, and a few who have recognized me out in public. Each one has been so touching. I hear stories, too, from my family, friends, and staff at the Webb. Thank you!! My twentieth class reunion was probably the highlight of the year. ARIES – Mar 21–Apr 20 People may not be available this week to get together, and that is perfectly fine by you, Aries. Solitude is just what you can use right now after a busy stretch. TAURUS – Apr 21–May 21 Taurus, expect a delay or two this week as those who you are expecting simply keep you waiting and it’s very frustrating. This will be a lesson in patience for now. GEMINI – May 22–Jun 21 Gemini, you may envision a plan in your mind, but now it is up to you to move it from your thoughts and into the reality of coming to fruition. It will take a little time. CANCER – Jun 22–Jul 22 Cancer, give yourself some time to have fun and play around. The inner child in you needs the opportunity to explore and try new things. You’ll have plenty of chances. LEO – Jul 23–Aug 23 This week may bring many different feelings to the surface, Leo. You may not be ready to explore all of your deep emotions just yet, but you can start by being honest with others. VIRGO – Aug 24–Sept 22 Virgo, empathy may inundate you this week, as you are in tune with the feelings of many different people. Others will appreciate your thoughtfulness in the days

to come. LIBRA – Sept 23–Oct 23 You have many chores on your list but things keep pulling you in different directions, Libra. if you can’t focus on something difficult, try a creative pursuit. SCORPIO – Oct 24–Nov 22 Scorpio, you may find if you look ahead that there are really no pressing matters on your calendar. This gives you the perfect opportunity to have an outing and enjoy yourself. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23–Dec 21 Past memories could put you in a funk, Sagittarius. Rather than dwell on what may have happened, think about the future in your control. CAPRICORN – Dec 22–Jan 20 Focus your energy on ideas this week, Capricorn. You might not be changing the world, but each innovation you think up will have a positive impact. AQUARIUS – Jan 21–Feb 18 Aquarius, do not let moments of selfdoubt derail you. Now more than ever, you need to believe in yourself. Think of this as a test that you can ace. PISCES – Feb 19–Mar 20 Pisces, if you do not like what you are or where you are going right now, you have an opportunity to make any changes you want. This may be the ultimate resolution.

More “Gobbledygook” to Leave You “Astonied” (Or Maybe Give You “Collywobbles”) By Joseph W. Smith III

A

s Webb’s Weird Words wraps its first year in print, I couldn’t quite manage a relevant theme this time around; in keeping with the idea of “end,” however, I did at least finish harvesting words from the very first of the 27 pages in my running list of oddball vocab. Here are your final 15 for 2023:

Astonied (uh-STAH-need, adj.) - Looking for all the world like a typo, this is just an old — and now obsolete — form of astonished. Apparently, it is available only as a pasttense adjective. (In other words, you cannot simply “astony” someone, more’s the pity.) Brabble (BRAB-ul, verb) - To argue, wrangle or fight; also a noun for argumentative talk. Perhaps best known from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night: “In private brabble did we apprehend him” (5.1).

Chivy (SHIV-ee, verb) - To harass, annoy or nag, especially in a petty manner. Also: to hunt. Probably from an old Scottish hunting song, “The Ballad of Chevy Chase,” which in turn gave us the Maryland city name, as well as that of the famous actor. Fittingly then, the original verb can also be spelled chivvy — or chevy. Collywobbles (KOLL-ee-wob-ulz, noun) - Intestinal cramps or other stomach pains; also: nervousness or anxiety. Possibly related to colic or cholera. Commode (kuh-MODE, noun) - This one has an array of meanings, including a woman’s ornate cap or headdress — or a low cabinet, stand or cupboard. In olden times, the latter sometimes held a “chamber pot” (from which we get potty); so it can mean toilet — though Central PA is the only place I’ve ever heard it used that way. (I have a Bloomsburg cousin who calls her crapper a commode, which I still find amusing.) Crepuscular (Kreh-PUS-kyuh-lur, adj.) Dim, indistinct; relating to, occurring in or resembling twilight (i.e., a crepuscular light; or crepuscular insects). Fop (noun) - From my beloved American Heritage Dictionary: “A vain, affected man who is preoccupied with his clothes and manners; a dandy.” As an adjective: foppish. Both fairly common words — but still fun to use! Fulvous (FULL-vuss, adj.) - Tawny; brownish-yellow or -gray. Familiar to birders from the fulvous whistling duck, which I had never heard of till I unwittingly photographed a gaggle in Florida, much to the excitement of my bird-loving friends (apparently they are rare in this country).

Gobbledygook (GOB-ul-dee-gook — with the final oo pronounced like good; noun) - I wanted to include this terrific term, as it’s in the file-name for my weird vocab list (“Confusticated gobbledygook”). According to Merriam-Webster, gobbledygook is “wordy and generally unintelligible jargon”; entertaining synonyms include rigmarole, hooey, amphigory, cant, drivel, bosh, balderdash and bunk. Hortatory (HOR-tuh-tor-ee, adj.) - Related to exhort, it is almost a synonym: “urging to some course of conduct or action” (Dictionary.com). Meshugana (meh-SHOOG-uh-nuh — again, with the oo pronounced as in good; noun) - Sometimes spelled meshugener, it is Yiddish slang for a crazy person (“meshug” = crazy, insane). Micturate (MIK-chur-ate, verb) - To pass urine. I simply cannot remember where I encountered this word — nor have I ever heard anybody use it; maybe best not to try starting a trend with this anyway. Moue (MOO, noun) - “A pouting grimace.” Another fairly common word that I have always loved. Definition from The Random House College Dictionary — just to spread the love around a bit among my many dictionaries. Patulous (PATCH-uh-luss, adj.) - Spreading, open, expanded, gaping — especially when describing a plant or tree in botany. Thrummy (THRUM-ee, adj.) - As a noun, thrum is an unwoven thread or fringe that sticks out. So thrummy means shaggy or “tufted.” Happy New Year! And as for weird words: Here’s to many more in 2024!

ou may have heard someone say they can tell when a storm is coming because they felt achy in their joints. For many who suffer from arthritis or other inflammatory conditions, cold weather can wreak havoc on already vulnerable parts of your body. It’s common to blame joint pain flare-ups on changes in the weather, and many doctors believe people can feel more joint pain on cold, rainy days. However, the research on the connection between the two isn’t clear. How Weather May Affect Joints Although everyone’s pain and discomfort is unique, the following factors are commonly associated with our bodies ability to predict weather: – Barometric pressure (pressure of the air) can affect joints, but so can humidity, precipitation, and temperature. Barometric pressure drops in the winter and people with joint pain, especially arthritis, may be sensitive to changes in barometric pressure because the cartilage that cushions the

bones inside a joint is worn away, causing nerves in the exposed bones to pick up on changes in pressure. Additionally, when the barometric pressure drops, it’s believed that inflamed areas of our bodies (knees, hips, hands, elbows, and shoulders) swell. Swelling can irritate nerves, which results in increased pain. Changes in barometric pressure may make your tendons, muscles, and any scar tissue expand and contract, and that can create pain in joints affected by arthritis. – Cold temperatures cause changes in our blood flow, our body naturally wants to keep us warm. When cold weather strikes, some blood flow is rerouted from our limbs to important organs, such as our heart and lungs. This takes warmth away from our joints, which can cause discomfort. Low temperatures can also make the fluid inside joints thicker, so they feel stiffer. – Decreased activity can cause inactive joints to get stiff and painful. Cold or inclement weather limits many of our activity levels and this lack of movement can take its toll on our bodies. Even if you’re forced indoors, get creative with ways to keep active and

very real for many people with joint pain. Some people’s bodies may be more sensitive to changes in the weather. Although it may sound like migrating to a warmer climate is the only remedy, here are a few ways to help reduce your joint pain: – Take care of your health. Eat a balanced, nutritional diet, and stay hydrated. Shedding some extra pounds has many health benefits as well, but specifically, it can take stress off your joints. – Take vitamins. Supplement with vitamin D or fish oil. You naturally get less vitamin D in the winter and being deficient might make your joints hurt more. Fish oil is rich in Omega-3, which helps decrease inflammation. – Stay active. Low impact activities like riding a stationary bike can increase blood flow and reduce joint stiffness. In addition to moving, stretching helps maintain your mobility and can warm up your joints for physical activity, helping reduce the chance of injury. – Use heat. Warm water can help soothe your joints, so take a dip in a heated pool or draw a hot bath. You can also use a heating pad on troubled areas, but for no more than 20 minutes at

– Take NSAIDs. Ask your doctor about non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin, which can reduce inflammation and pain. – Fight cold with cold. Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling. – Get a massage. Relax the muscles around your joints. – Be safe. Cold weather yields icy surfaces. Protect your joints from further damage from falls by wearing sturdy shoes and walking carefully. Don’t strain your joints if you don’t have to — let someone else lift those heavy boxes. If you have persistent joint pain that won’t subside, an orthopaedic specialist can help you determine what the pain stems from and the best way to alleviate the issues. Each case is unique, and treatment plans may include physical therapy, surgery, or various lifestyle changes. Alicia Meadows, D.O., is with UPMC Rheumatology and sees patients at 1705 Warren Ave., Williamsport, and 24 Cree Dr., Lock Haven. ou remember winters like this. Short, cloudy days, long stormy nights, both perfect for curling up with a warm blanket and reading until it’s time for bed — and then reading there, too. So this winter, why not cuddle with one of

these great unique history books...? For readers who love to compare life a century ago versus now, “1932: FDR, Hoover, and the Dawn of a New America” by Scott Martelle (Citadel Press, $28.00) will be just the ticket. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl both cloaked America in hard times and in the midst of it, two men — both Presidents — had different ideas on how to fix things. Readers who enjoy mixing history in their politics will want this book. Want to take your history back a little farther? Then look for “God Save

Benedict Arnold: The True Story of America’s Most Hated Man” by Jack Kelly (St. Martin’s Press, $29.00). Sure, Arnold was a traitor and a snake but, says Kelly, he was a hero before that. This book doesn’t try to erase that which made Arnold a symbol of backstabbing and turncoating, but readers will still be very surprised at what they’ll learn. Historians know that America’s never had a monarchy but in “Flight of the WASP: The Rise, Fall, and Future of America’s Original Ruling Class” by Michael Gross (Atlantic Monthly Press, $30), you’ll read about very elite Americans who heavily influenced politics, economics, society, racial attitudes, and religion decades ago. The more things change, the more they stay the same? Maybe — and you gotta read this book to understand why. For the history lover or women’s history reader who also craves a bit of romance, look for “Between Two Worlds: Jewish War Brides After the Holo-

caust” by Robin Judd (The University of North Carolina Press, $29.95). It’s a book about survival, but also of hope and recovery, love and determination, and if you’ve read or watched anything about the Holocaust, you need to add this important book to your list. Another Women’s History book to look for is “Boardinghouse Women: How Southern Keepers, Cooks, Nurses, Widows, and Runaways Shaped Modern America” by Elizabeth S.D. Engelhardt (The University of North Carolina Press, $27.95). Here, you’ll read about women who changed the way we eat, vacation, and live away from home, but with a little innovation, business, racism, and independence rolled into this story. And finally, how about the history of fashion? Try “Pockets: An Intimate History of How We Keep Things Close” by Hannah Carlson (Algonquin Books, $35). Men’s clothing has them. Women’s clothing, not always. We stuff ‘em with our hands, tissues, wallets, phones, and breath mints. We can’t live without pockets but what do they mean? Find out here, in a book that won’t quite fit in your... And if these great books aren’t enough to satisfy your craving for little-known history, be sure to ask your favorite bookseller or librarian for help. They’ll put you in touch with a whole winter’s full of memorable books.

Is Soup the Ultimate Cold Medicine?

Call 570-326-9322

December 27, 2023 • Webb Weekly • 42

H

aving a cold is not fun. A stuffy nose, sniffles, sore throat, and other symptoms make having a cold a generally unpleasant experience. According to data collected by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, the average consumer shops for over-the counter medicine 26 times a year, with peak visits occurring in the wintertime, when colds and flu infections are more prominent. To make cold-related matters worse, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration

panel concluded in September 2023 that the popular decongestant phenylephrine, which is found in many overthe-counter cold remedies, is ineffective when taken orally. Phenylephrine became the standard decongestant in formulations when pseudoephedrine, another decongestant, became more closely regulated due to its usage in the production of illegal drugs like methamphetamine. Phenylephrine products the became the go-to, as they did not need to be stored behind pharmacy counters and “signed out” like products

that included pseudoephedrine. Rather than accepting their cold symptoms this season, individuals may want to turn to something much more natural that also has great promise: soup. It is no old wive’s tale that soup can be helpful for colds and other illnesses. In fact, Egyptian Jewish physician Moshe ben Maimonides prescribed chicken soup as a treatment for respiratory tract illnesses as early as the 12th century. Penn Medicine advises that soup can be a go-to food to combat illness because it is light, easy-to-digest, nourishing, and even restorative. Here’s a look at some of the ways soup can help when people are feeling under the weather. Hydrating broth: Staying hydrated is one of the ways the body can more effectively fight off illness. Broth-based soups are hydrating and tasty. They may be tolerated more readily than sports drinks or water for a person who needs fluids. Soothing: The warmth of soup can soothe an irritated throat. Furthermore, soups usually have softened ingredients in them, making it much less likely that sharp or tough ingredients will scrape an inflamed throat. Nutrient-dense: Most soups are loaded with vegetables, beans and other healthy ingredients. They provide many of the vitamins and minerals the body needs,

and may even help replenish nutrients that have been depleted due to illness. Sodium content: Sodium is an essential mineral the body needs. Proactive Health Labs says soup regulates body fluids and transmits electrical impulses in the body. Sodium in moderation may be good when a person is feeling ill. In addition, sodium and other seasonings in soup can awaken taste buds that are dulled when sick with a cold. Salt also helps alleviate sore throat pain and can help clear nasal congestion. Garlic infusion: Soups that contain garlic or garlic extract may reduce the severity of cold and flu symptoms, according to a University of Florida study published in the journal Clinical Nutrition. Soup may be the best medicine when a person has a cold. Its many properties may help make soup as effective, or even more so, than some products at the pharmacy.

must never deny it or forget it — Falk provides a model of transparency in the midst of a crisis where stigma is sometimes the biggest roadblock. Miele recalls Zach’s shame, embarrassment and even tears over his own addiction, while Madden similarly insists it is essential to work on the stigma — adding that basically one-fourth of her WBDAAC staffers are themselves in long-term recovery. Dr. John Boll, associate director of UPMC Williamsport, stresses that relationships also can be key to moving forward. “Chronic pain and addiction are very isolating diseases,” says Boll, “and they’re also completely underserved.” As these conditions are often accompanied by depression, it is vital for friends and family to stay close and available for a time when victims may decide to reach out for help. In the film, Lycoming County Judge Nancy Butts also recounts stories of recovery, providing hope for working past the sort of trauma that leads people into abuse and addiction. Madden movingly points out that “people don’t want to be addicted to substances — that is not the life they want.” To which she adds: “I just want people to know that there’s help available. And that there is hope.” While “The Rise of Opioids” sounds a ringing alarm, it certainly achieves that latter goal as well. As of December 15th, the film is available free on YouTube.

“It’s destroying families and people’s lives,” says Madden — adding that the county recently lost an overdose victim who was only 12 years old. “We had 39 drug deaths in 2020,” says Lycoming Country Coroner Charles Kiessling. And he adds pointedly: “We shouldn’t have to bury our children.” Interviewed anonymously, the undercover narcotics officer pinpoints one key factor in these deaths: fentanyl. “All heroin being sold in Lycoming County is fentanyl since 2018,” he says, calling this a calculated profit move by the cartels — because fentanyl is cheaper, easier to make and requires smaller doses. But that final aspect is the death knell, as street-level buyers wind up overdosing on drugs much stronger than they suspected — or possibly laced with other deadly substances like xylazine, “a tranquilizer not intended for humans,” says the officer. Kiessling points out that he has seen as many as 10-12 different substances showing up in his post-mortem toxicology reports. The coroner likewise notes that along with these overdoses, increasing drug use is generally accompanied by violent crime. This connection is also confirmed in the film by WBDAAC counselor Taylor Falk, himself a recovering addict: “Once you’re in the grips,” says Falk, “everything you’ve grown up having instilled in you completely goes out the window. You put drugs into me, and I’m a monster.” Courageously speaking of his own addiction in the present tense — as though he

G

oing to deer camp is an interesting experience, filled with camaraderie, hardy meals, and never a lack of conversation. Debates run the gambit, from “What is the best caliber for hunting whitetail deer?” to “Should you butcher a deer as quickly as possible or age it for a few days or even weeks?” Often, the question that receives a good deal of discussion, with varied opinions, is “How long can you keep deer meat?” Well, that depends! (Do you remember when you were a youngster and you asked a question and, more often than not, received a “yes” or “no” answer? These days, it seems that answers always start with “Well, that depends!”) Let’s start with deer meat that is processed and stored in a freezer. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, uncooked, frozen venison can be eaten up to 12 months after it is frozen. Frozen ground venison, or venison

burger, is at its best quality if eaten before three months, and venison roasts and venison steaks are tastiest before they reach the six to nine-month mark. Does this mean that you should pitch any frozen venison after it reaches day 366? Of course not, and this is where the “that depends” comes in. If stored properly, frozen venison can last much longer. It’s not so much a case of the meat spoiling or going bad as it is a matter of stored venison tends to slowly lose its flavor and quality over time. If any of the meat has started to lose its fresh red color and has begun to turn brown or has an off odor, it should be discarded. If the meat becomes freezer-burned or there are excessive ice crystals in the packaging, you can still eat the meat, but the flavor may suffer since freezer burn draws out moisture and flavor. There’s good news regarding the quality and longevity of frozen deer meat, and that is, there are ways to enhance both the quality and longevity of frozen venison. First, trimming away any fat and connective tissue during the

allowing for labeling of the various cuts. Don’t forget to date the packages, as it will be very beneficial whenever you decide to clean out the freezer and discard the older packages. Perhaps the best insurance of quality and longevity is the use of a vacuum sealer. Vacuum sealing of any game meats removes most of the oxygen from the package, thus slowing the growth of bacteria. When first placing the packs in the freezer, make sure they are spaced out to allow enough air circulation for freezing. If they are stacked too tightly, they may not freeze

all the way through or might freeze unevenly. After 24 hours in the freezer, you can stack them tightly. Is deer meat good after two years in the freezer? Is it good after three years in the freezer? The answer is “Yes!” Even beyond three years in the freezer, deer meat can still be eaten. As long as it smells good, it’s good to eat. There may be signs of freezer burn, but this only affects the taste, not the safety, of the venison. If you still have concerns, I would suggest two great alternatives to freezing venison. First is the canning of

venison, and second is turning some of the meat into jerky. Much of the information about preserving venison indicates that both the canning of venison and the making of venison jerky will yield greater longevity for the meat. Canned venison will last for a very long time and is best kept on a shelf in the basement where it is cool and away from sunlight. Venison jerky, on the other hand, can be a problem — especially if you have any teenagers in the house! No matter where you store it (or hide it), it’s tough to keep for a very long time!

butchering process is beneficial since both go rancid more quickly than the meat. Cut the meat into meal-size portions (about a pound or slightly less) to avoid leftover meat after cooking. There are numerous materials that work well in the wrapping of the various cuts of meat in preparation for freezing: heavily waxed paper such as butcher paper, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, freezer bags, and zip-close plastic bags. A very popular method of wrapping is first to wrap the raw meat with plastic wrap and then add a wrap of freezer paper,

course, you have to know where to look and what to look for if you hope to add a Northern Harrier to your bird list. Northern Harriers, which are also known as marsh hawks, have long wings with a wingspan of 38-48 inches, a long tail, and curious owl-like facial disks. It also has a conspicuous white rump patch that is often easily visible in flight. Females and immature males are largely a rusty brown above, while adult males are more grayish above and whitish below. Unlike a lot of other hawks, Northern Harriers seldom perch while waiting

to capture prey, but instead, they tend to glide close to the ground with their wings held in a shallow V pattern. The Northern Harrier is not a “woodsy” bird but rather prefers more open country and is more often found gliding over fields, marshy meadows, and open wetlands. Harriers are believed to have a keener sense of hearing than other hawks due to their disk-shaped faces, which are similar to owls. The Northern Harrier’s main food source is rodents, small birds, voles, rabbits, insects, lizards, and frogs. The voice of the Northern Harrier is a series of short, high-

pitched squeals or whistles. The Northern Harrier is not just a summertime visitor; instead, it can be found here year-round. Unlike other hawks, the harrier nests on the ground or adjacent to a low meadow or marshy area using shrubs or tall weedy growths for concealment. It may take a while to find a Northern Harrier in the wild, but if you want to get a look at one or a lot of other different birds, head over to the Montour Preserve Visitors Center, where they have mounts of many different birds, including eagles.

I’m not sure what species it is that I see perched on a tree limb. More recently, I found myself pouring through bird identification books and field guides, however, when I was asked to paint the cover for the upcoming June issue of Pennsylvania Game News — a Northern Harrier. It’s not unusual to spot a Red-tailed Hawk nailing its prey up on the bank as you head down a four-lane highway nor to see an American Kestrel, a jay-sized falcon, perched on a wire as you drive into town. However, I must admit that I have only spotted a few Northern Harriers over the years. Of

Contacted at home, Mary Jane told the caller, “Don has our only car, and besides, I don’t have my hair done. “Rent a car, and we’ll take care of your hair when you get here,” were the instructions she was given. It was close to closing time on a Saturday afternoon when Mary Jane tried to contact a car rental company, stating, “I’ve been invited to spend the weekend with the President and First Lady at Camp David.” “Sure, Lady,” came the sarcastic response. Luckily, a friend came to the rescue and obtained a car from a local dealership for Mary Jane to reach Camp David. They spent the weekend dining with the President and Rosalynn in the main house, sharing conversation, and attending the little chapel for church to enjoy an exciting weekend. All brought about by a fishing trip and a pair of boots. Don Daughenbaugh’s fishing prowess is well-known in our area. Those who know him have plenty of other stories to share. Those who don’t know Don and the fishing life he lived can learn more via the pages of a book he wrote in 2021 entitled Great People, Great Rivers. The passing of Rosalynn Carter is just one of many stories that will be retold during those ‘year-in-review’ segments, but those memories Don Daughenbauch took the time to share with me will always jump to the forefront whenever the Carters are referenced.

could not be reached as he was teaching a class. ‘This is the White House calling,’ responded the voice on the other end of the phone. Thinking this was a crank call, the office worker hung up the phone. The phone soon rang again, stating it was the White House and Rosalynn Carter wanted to talk with Daughenbaugh. The subject of that conversation was a request from Rosalynn stating that she wanted to get the President a pair of fishing boots for Christmas that were like the pair Don had been wearing when they had been fishing together. Getting the President’s shoe size, Don went to work on the request. When he had made the purchase, he called Rosalynn to tell her he would mail them to the White House. The First Lady then told Don not to mail them. Instead, she would be sending someone to pick them up. A few days later, a Secret Service agent knocked on his front door to pick up the President’s Christmas gift! Among many other stories shared was a visit to Camp David to again fish with the President. After a cold, windy October Saturday with poor fishing results, the two men returned to Camp David. Carter asked Don where his wife Mary Jane was. Told she was home in South Williamsport, the President replied, “We don’t go anywhere without our wives.” He then instructed his security team to “get her down for the weekend right now.”

arilouise Mazzante and I have been friends for a long time. We first met my sophomore year at Williamsport High. I was in her classroom for honors History. Maz was outstanding, passionate, and tough. I learned a great deal, and she is easily in my top five. She was a fantastic teacher. A terrific motivator who pushed us to learn. She retired from WAHS in 2014 after 32 years. Marilouise Mazzante was also a head coach. She mentored the Millionaire Track & Field and Cross Country for twenty-five plus. Maz’s achievements are unrivaled. It

is quite amazing what she accomplished. Her teams were always contenders, and they won several prizes. They went nearly 14 years without a regular season loss. Numerous District IV titles and four overall PIAA State crowns. She helped multiple athletes win individual State awards. Coach Maz was the very first female to enter the PA Track and Field Hall of Fame. Marilouise also won Coach of the Year many times. The Millionaires were untouchable, and it was quite the run — tons of accolades. Maz achieved so much in her tenure. There isn’t enough room on this page. Marilouise has a special gift. Wheth-

er it was teaching or coaching, it was incredible how she would bring out our best. A master of motivation. Her words and passion still have the same effect. We invited her to speak at one of our SJNRA pep rallies a few years Jamie back. She moved Spencer the entire gym. The stories were off the charts. We played so well that we actually kept bringing her back. She is great. Maz continues to help youngsters through FAST MAZ. A venture she started when she retired from teaching. Maz trains many kids with her SMART approach. Her system is geared to increase speed and acceleration by working on the fundamentals. She uses a combination of plyometrics and running mechanics. It is quite spectacular. Marilouise has worked with several local high school teams and clubs. She also has an impressive list of athletes that have gone on to college. All walks of life. Many different sports. Her training works. Jensen still looks like his mom. Thank heavens. But unfortunately, he inherited my speed and agility. Now he is getting better, but I reached out to Marilouise Mazzante for a little love. We enrolled Jensen in the FAST MAZ six weeks of winter training. I dropped him off every Sunday morning at the Liberty Arena. Some 75 kids from all over North Central PA. Foot-

ballers. Softballers. Hoopsters. Gymnasts. And guitar players. It was amazing. Coach Maz was in her element. Each session was outstanding. I remembered that voice. Her passion and enthusiasm never left. Kids were everywhere. Jumping over boxes. Running through cones. And using parachutes. It was a sight to see. Maz was rather busy, but she always came over to say hello. She would praise Jensen and mention a few things he needed to work on. She did this with every single youngster. I am not kidding. By the end of the six weeks- she knew all their names. Jensen enjoyed the training. It was great catching up and seeing my friend. Yes. Coach Maz is one of the best. I enjoyed our conversations and watching her work with my son — the circle of life. We get older, but Marilouise Mazzante is still doing her thing. Merry Christmas. Cheers.
