A Christmas Wish of Hope, Love, and Compassion

A

very Merry Christmas to everyone! Let’s all be careful out there while enjoying all that is a blessed Holiday Season. Please remember to say thank you to all that prepare the perfectly delicious Christmas feast. Absolutely no political discussions until after the New Year. And let’s keep the conversation around the table joyous and positive. The most quoted and famous bible verse in the history of Christianity, “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16. This should bring warmth to your heart, a smile to your face, and provide peace of mind. This is truly what the Christmas spirit is all about. At a time when the world has never been more complicated, and true evil can be seen and viewed every day, the answer can be found in the greatest father-son story ever told. The Bible and its teachings can often be difficult to interpret and even harder to follow without sin. Our God understood this and provided us a back-up plan and

a clear message in John 3:16. It couldn’t be spelled out any clearer. Believe and accept Jesus Christ as your savior as he is the provider of forgiveness and all that is good in the world and ever after. The miracle of Christmas enhances this message along with one of the most important intangibles during our journey through life, that of hope. That when things get tough in our mortal world, and bad things happen by choice or chance, God has provided a plan, and it begins with accepting Jesus. Christmas celebrates the birth of our Lord and savior’s arrival on Earth. Please make some time during the Christmas festivities to talk with your children and explain God’s plan. Get out and about and share your Christmas spirit with the older members of your family that may be homebound or in a nursing facility. Help to lift up the spirits for those that are missing a loved one at the family table. On Christmas Eve, don’t forget to leave Jolly Old Saint Nicholas those special cookies and milk. He is truly working in the name of good. And Santa’s story is

a special time in children’s lives. Father John Manno taught me that both need to be embraced and explained during this joyous season. Please take the time to share that special ChristJim mas spirit. Whether it be Webb Jr. through prayer, the gift of time, or donation with a complete stranger. This can be with someone locally or a person halfway around the world. Luke 2:11, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” These words announcing the arrival of baby Jesus. This begins the greatest father-son story ever written. From Immanuel’s humble birth and resting peacefully in a manger to his final hours of suffering and crucifixion, it is truly a story about God’s love. Through this infinite love of man, God provides all of us that shining star of guidance and forgiveness through acceptance. As we celebrate Christmas as Christians, we must share this love with our fellow man no matter of their beliefs, road traveled, or life chosen. Within the blueprint provided, it is clearly up to us to provide love and respect for our fellow man, not mortal

judgment. There has never been a time in the chronological history labeled AD that this has been more important. There are forces at work that only want to divide and create hatred. With those thoughts in mind, if you are not a Christian, I ask you to please never be offended by the words “Merry Christmas.” It is my faith’s way to seasonally greet one another in an attempt to spread joy and peace in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If anyone from any other religion greeted me with a message of religious celebration in the name of good, I would never find it offensive. Incidentally, just because you love and show respect for your fellow man doesn’t mean you agree with all of their beliefs. This, as always, is my last column for the year. Next week Editor Steph will have page 2 as we celebrate local organizations that do so much with our annual charity pages. Before I finish up, a reminder in the pages ahead to check out all the names of the amazing boys and girls that entered our Christmas Fun Coloring Contest. And oh yes, the winners are in there, congrats to all! Again, I wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and safe travels throughout the Holiday Season. God Bless America.

Merry Christmas

efore you ask, no, I do not have everything done for Christmas. Most of the shopping is done. I still have dinner stuff to buy, but I don’t even want to think about what’s ahead for wrapping. But it’s OK. It’s totally fine. I’ll get everything done — probably. I do have my priorities though, and one of those was gathering up my elves (they were spread from Linden to Elysburg) to finish up the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships Christmas Fun Coloring Contest! It was another tough year of judging! Narrowing down over 300 entries to just 30 winners isn’t an easy task, but luckily, I had help! Jolly TinselFluff, Buddy GlitterDoodle, and Cookie TwinkleCheer were amazingly helpful this year in not only helping me pick the winners, but keeping all the entries organized and the list of entrants straight! CHARLIE BROWN utes on the back of an envelope,” the producer recalled. Though Guaraldi died at only 47, he did score the first 15 specials; and Charlie Brown Christmas remains the second-best-selling jazz album ever (after Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue). One other trivia note: For bass and percussion on the album, Guaraldi was accompanied by different musicians than those on the actual TV soundtrack. And speaking of sound: Sparky absolutely refused to allow a laughtrack, though this was industry standard at the time. Likewise, Mendelson and crew broke with tradition by having actual children do the dialog, rather than adults as in most cartoons of the day. In fact, six-year-old Cathy Steinberg, who played Sally, was not yet even able to read — so Melendez fed her the lines one at a time! There was also a moment of triumph when casting agent Hazel McMillen found their Linus: Christopher Shea, whose “slight lisp gave him a youthful sweetness while his emotional delivery gave him power and authority as well” — in Mendelson’s words. Snoopy was handled by Melendez, who spouted gibberish and then sped up the tape so nobody could tell. Remarkably, despite a very active young cast, all the vocals were nailed down in a single day, with Jefferson Airplane — who were recording next door — dropping over to get the kids’ autographs. But initial response to the finished product

was less than enthusiastic. As Wikipedia puts it, “All involved believed the special would be a disaster.” In fact, after an initial screening, CBS execs complained so stridently that, Mendelson said, “I really believed, if it hadn’t been scheduled for the following week, there’s no way they were gonna broadcast that show.” Fortunately, they were all dead wrong. The special premiered on Dec. 9 in The Munsters’ time-slot, coming in second in viewership just behind Bonanza — a success it sustained throughout the coming decades. Critics raved, calling it “fascinating and haunting,” “a yule classic” and “the dramatic highlight of the season.” The Washington Post summed it up nicely: “natural-born loser Charlie Brown finally turned up a real winner last night.” The show went on to win an Emmy and — another cool tidbit from Wikipedia — the business with Charlie Brown’s real tree “practically eliminated the popularity of the aluminum tree, which was a fad at the time.” Having shown on regular television for 57 years, the special is currently available for viewing only on Apple TV. But of course, the DVD makes a nice affordable gift — for those of us who still have a player! As Mendelson might say: It’s fun for all … that children call … their favorite time of year. This article owes a debt to Mendelson’s book on the making of the special, pub. Harper, 2000.

Faith Conversations…

The Discipline of Confession By Tim Hartzell Note: This is the ninth article in a series called Overcoming the Five Failures of Us. Previous articles are always available at www.webbweekly. com.

I

n response to God’s convicting and awakening grace (last week’s article), we have the opportunity to take important steps on the narrow pathway that leads to redemption. Our first step is confession. I refer to confession as a discipline because it is not easy. It is painful, but it is good pain that moves us forward on the redemptive

path. Confession fully opens our hearts to the powerful flow of God’s grace and releases healing grace to the injured. Confession has three components: 1. An unguarded description of the trespass— no excuses, minimizing, or blame shifting. Confession matches what God already knows about our sin — and it agrees with what He says about our sin. 2. A remorseful statement regarding the negative consequences suffered by the injured. This is also the first step in restitution. 3. A description of the corrections being made so the same trespass does not happen again. A confession is proven to be meaningless if the

trespass just keeps happening. The reasons we struggle with confession: 1. An uncaring temperament. If you have this, then you lack natural sympathy or empathy and are unaware of the pain you are causing others. 2. Ignorance. If you were never taught about confession or saw it modeled, then confession will seem foreign to you. 3. Low self-esteem. If you don’t feel good about yourself, then you will really struggle with the vulnerability required to make confession. 4. A desire to keep or gain power. The ambitious don’t apologize, and neither do those claiming victim status. 5. A hardened heart. If you have rejected God’s convicting grace, then your conscience has become hardened. Regardless of the reason we struggle, we must overcome. Overcoming these struggles takes

intentional effort and the willingness to suffer redemptive pain. Again, that’s why confession is a discipline. Friends, Jesus is calling on us to overcome – and God’s grace makes it possible. We have no excuses. When we confess: 1. God’s redeeming grace flows unimpeded into our hearts, resulting in reconciliation and peace with God. 2. Healing justice is released into the heart of the injured. 3. We experience pain. Through it, we learn and mature, increasing our resistance against future temptation. 4. We provide a healthy model for others to follow. Cautions about Confession: 1. Too much. Constantly apologizing or over-

and remorse for an action that has upset, inconvenienced, injured, or caused a negative consequence for someone else. Sadly, we are living in a time when people no longer say they’re sorry. Some of this is attributable to wrong-headed beliefs that have taken root in our minds. Here are some of the statements used to support the not-sorry madness: Never say you’re sorry. Really? You never do anything wrong or discourteous? You never inconvenience someone else? The unwillingness to say sorry reveals ignorance, or arrogant pride, or uncaring insensitivity, or low self-esteem, or some other form of mental/emotional damage or dysfunction.

apologizing is an accusation that the other person is easily offended or unwilling to forgive. 2. Too public. Public confession is often narcissistic attention-seeking. If handled improperly, public confession worsens the injury to the victim or implicates other people. It is wise to seek counsel before making a public confession. 3. Too private. Private confession may leave behind unresolved consequences of the trespass, opening the door for ongoing speculation, rumor, and resentment. Confession should include all who were exposed to the trespass. Not Sorry Madness. In our culture, confession often begins with “I’m sorry for . . . ” Sorry is defined as feeling and expressing regret

vulnerability — and that means we’re going to step on each other from time to time. I’m sorry is a vital and often-used phrase in any loving relationship. Romans 12:9-21 describes what love looks like in action. In verse 18 it says: If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus teaches: If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First, go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. Confession is so important that Jesus makes it a first step in the worship of God. We need to stop the not-sorry madness! Confession doesn’t change the past – it sets the future free. Let’s fully engage the discipline of confession and watch as God pours out His redemptive grace!

Some people will never apologize. Instead, they will accuse you of being too sensitive or not understanding their purpose or humor. When we encounter such people, we need to forgive and move on. We can’t let them live rent-free in our heads. Doing so would make us guilty of living in bitterness. We also need to ask ourselves, “Is it true? Am I too easy to offend?” Some people are offended even without an offense, and everyone around them walks on eggshells. We should be hard to offend and quick to forgive. Proverbs 19:11 says: It is to one’s glory to overlook an offense. I Corinthians 13:5 tells us that love is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. I Peter 4:8 teaches: Above all, love each other deeply because love covers over a multitude of sins. Love means never having to say you’re sorry. What a crock! Love requires the risk of

Pumpkin, just a baby herself, raised her babies in the safety of a foster home. All of her babies have forever homes; now it’s Pumpkin’s turn. Not only is Philip handsome, he is lucky! He went from homeless to cancer survivor. Philip was found wandering the streets. Thankfully his rescuer took him to be vetted before trying to find him a home. That was when the mass was discovered and subsequently removed. A biopsy determined the margins were clean; the vet was able to remove all the cancer. Philip is healed and ready to start a new chapter in his life. If you’re interested in meeting this character, stop by during open hours.

A Partridge in a … Perdrix? Unwrapping Holiday Words, Pt. 2 By Joseph W. Smith III

T

his week’s Weird Words continues its holiday theme with another dozen terms we rarely use at other times of year. Our previous installment focused on religious vocab like manger, noel and Kris Kringle; here are 12 more, with a slightly secular slant. (Remember, in this space we’re concerned not so much with traditions as with meaning and etymology.) Carol – A song of joy, especially at Christmas. From an ancient French word involving a circle of dancers or singers; possibly related to carrel, in the sense of an enclosure — and of course, to the choral word-group as well. One cool tidbit: Carol is the feminine form of Charles (ultimately deriving from the German Karl, meaning “man”). This may explain its otherwise odd use as a title for Dickens’s famed Christmas tale. Mistletoe – A parasitic plant that grows on other trees, it is the state flower of Oklahoma. Etymologically, mistletoe is a compound of two old words meaning basil twig. The plant’s use for smooching apparently relates to ancient fertility beliefs — and that’s all I’m gonna say about

that in a family newspaper! Nog – A drink made with milk and beaten eggs, usually mixed with liquor or wine. Nog is an old British term for strong ale — which I much prefer to this goop, by the way. My dad loved it; but personally, I’ll stick with Mad Elf, thanks. Partridge – We don’t have this fourtoed fowl in America, which is why I wouldn’t find one in my pear tree — not even from as a gift from “my true love”! As Bill Bryson points out in The Secret History of Christmas, partridges — along with related ground-birds like chickens and turkeys — don’t nest in trees; their anomalous arboreal appearance in the famed seasonal song could be due to the fact that in French, the bird is perdrix — pronounced with a silent X, almost exactly like “pear tree”! Poinsettia – This tough-to-spell word refers to a plant originally native to Central America, where it was discovered by American diplomat and botanist J. R. Poinsett. I always thought this term had some weird French derivation, but it is, instead, one of many common nouns named for a person — like chauvinist, boycott, dunce, derrick, guillotine and

and, among other things, patron saint of children, thieves, brewers and pawnbrokers. Go figure. Scrooge/Grinch – These two famed literary grumps are now synonymous with seasonal misanthropy. Both names were inventions of their creators — Charles Dickens and Dr. Seuss, respectively. The latter is likely meant to recall grouch, while the former possibly invokes “squeeze,” along with a standard colloquial name for Satan: “Old Scratch” (both Scrooge-related terms appear in Dickens’s text). Tannenbaum – German for “fir tree.”

salmonella. (We’ll do a separate column on those next year!) Reindeer – It might be fitting if this word related to rein — as in a leather strap for animals. But of course, the term is much older than Rudolph; and in any case, it’s tough to imagine wild animals named for their association with a giant sled! In truth, the compound comprises two old terms meaning “deer” — one of which was the Norse hreinn. Santa Claus – Nothing more or less than an alteration of the supposed gift-giving figure St. Nicholas, who was actually an ancient Christian bishop

healthy.” (The second half of that relates not only to our word health, but also to the similar hale.) Yule – Christmas itself, or simply that season. According to the invaluable Online Etymology Dictionary (which I called on repeatedly for this article), it derives from an ancient heathen festival that was co-opted by Christianity. Etymologists William and Mary Morris trace the term to Middle English yollen, “cry aloud”; this is apparently what folks did upon discovering that the days were starting to get longer — which will happen for us later on this week! In the meantime: ves heill — and to all a good night.

Its origin is obscure, though it may be related to the bark-derived chemical tannin. Tinsel – I always thought this common decoration was named for tin — though it was originally made from silver, lead, copper, or brass (and nowadays, mostly plastic). But actually, it derives from scintilla, meaning flash or sparkle. That’s where we get the more common adjective scintillating — which I hope describes your tree this year! Wassail – A toast to one’s health or prosperity; or the beverage so used; or even a festive drinking party. Somewhat surprisingly, the term is not from “ale,” but rather the Norse ves heill, “be

Remembering The Yuletide of 1930 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

hen Christmas was celebrated 93 years ago in 1930, the country was in the middle of a dire economic downturn that would become known as the Great Depression. The year 1930 saw men, women, and children waiting in breadlines and going to soup kitchens in order to receive basic sustenance for their bodies. Those who became homeless due to the severe economic difficulties erected makeshift shelters clustered together into little settlements called “Hooverville,” a not-so-subtle dig at President Herbert Hoover. Culturally that year, Hostess Twinkies and Snickers candy bars were introduced. Scotch tape was introduced by the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M). In sports, the Philadelphia Athletics defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Bobby Jones won golf ’s “Grand Slam,” and Max Schmeling was awarded the Heavyweight Boxing

title after being fouled by Jack Sharkey. The popular tunes that year included “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South,” “Them There Eyes,” “Three Little Words,” and “I’m Confessin’ That I Love You.” The big films that year were: “Little Caesar,” starring Edward G. Robinson, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” starring Lew Ayres, “Abraham Lincoln,” starring Walter Huston; and “Anna Christie,” starring newcomer Greta Garbo. Locally, in 1930, John S. Fisher was Governor of Pennsylvania, Lycoming County’s President Judge was Harvey Whitehead, Lycoming County Commissioners were Charles Rothfuss, Fred Applegate, and Joseph Nicely, Williamsport’s Mayor was Herbert T. Ames; Louis Russie was Chief of Police, and Michael Clark was Fire Chief. Williamsport had a population of about 45,000. Kline’s on the Square was selling electric train sets for $3.96, a velocipede for $3.25, a Dolly Ann Kitchen Set for $1.49, and a large pedal car for $2.35.

Lycoming Dry Goods was selling blanket bath robes for $2.98, dress shirts for $1.49, women’s silk hosiery for 79 cents, and roller skates for $1.69. L.L. Stearns was selling men’s raincoats from $2.95 to $8, men’s spats from $1.50 to $3, linen tablecloths from $2.95 to $10, and silk bedspreads from $2.98 to $16. A headline in the Gazette and Bulletin on December 23 proclaimed, “PP&L May Enter Natural Gas Field.” They applied with the Public Utility Commission to produce, distribute, and sell natural gas. Despite the economic hard times, the Gazette and Bulletin was reporting that the 1930 Christmas shopping season would be as good as the 1929 one for local merchants. The Gazette and Bulletin of December 24, 1930, reported that Williamsport “has never been so illuminated for Christmas.” It said Williamsport’s Vallamont and Grampian sections were particularly brightened and welllit by Christmas lights. It also said the number of decorated Christmas trees were a fully 50 percent more than in

former years. Playing at the Rialto Theater was “Big Money,” starring Robert Armstrong and James Gleason. “A Lady Surrenders” was at the Capitol Theater, starring Conrad Nagel. Christmas festivities were marred locally on Christmas Day when two children were killed, and their parents were badly burned in a house fire in Montgomery; the dead were Betty Jane Tilburg, four years old, and Ann Louise Tilburg, aged six; their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tilburg were badly burned in the blaze at their Main Street home. It was a happier time at Williamsport’s charitable institutions. The 108 people of the staff and residents of the Williamsport Home for the Friendless had a sumptuous Christmas dinner served to them and presents were given out as well. The 90 residents of the Williamsport City Home were given “a real old-fashioned Christmas.” The 95 persons who spent the holiday at the Williamsport Hospital also had a nice Christmas, and Santa also delivered a new baby girl.

he one comment I receive more often than any other from this column is the discovery of the role of county government. Most citizens focus their attention to local government and those who are directing it: city or borough council members or township supervisors. This is normal because Pennsylvania was designed this way. Townships and boroughs are smaller than other states because Pennsylvania was one of the thirteen original colonies that rebelled from England, and the early government wanted to ensure that Pennsylvania citizens could bring their concerns to their local governing bodies. Townships, especially, were designed never to be more than a half-day ride to the governing body from any farm or village in that region. This way, they could get back home by evening and not have to spend the night somewhere. Now, this is all well and good, except it resulted in a vast array of local governments. This is why Pennsylvania today has 1,547 townships, 955 boroughs, and 56 cities. Oh yes, and one town, Bloomsburg (a story for another day). Obviously, tying these various municipalities together would be a challenge. But again, our European heritage provided an answer.

The concept of a ‘county’ was born in medieval Europe. A king would rule a country, and the country would be divided up into areas ruled by a count. The word ‘count’ came into English from the French word ‘comte’ itself from the Latin word, ‘comes’ which means “companion.” To be recognized as a ‘count’ was to be a companion of the ruler of the realm, such as king or a duke. Those regions that were governed by this count were naturally known as ‘counties.’ When these English settlers came to the New World, they divided up these colonies into smaller areas to be better governable and naturally called them ‘counties.’ Counties served as administrative units for governance for the region, law enforcement, and judicial purposes. The first three were obviously in the Philadelphia area; in fact, the first county was Philadelphia, followed by Bucks and Chester. As the population of the colony grew westward, the pattern was that once an area was somewhat established, a new county structure would be recognized. This county structure was found to be an important tool for local governance. Lycoming County has the distinction of being the largest county in size in Pennsylvania, formed from Northumberland County on April 13, 1795. Yet when it was formed, it was much, much bigger,

From there, if you have a hankering to find out where exactly the money is going, you can do a deep dive and find a smorgasbord of information, right down to how much the Adult Probation Department spent to replace a laptop computer, how much it costs the Sheriff ’s office to cover the Little League World Series, or what the Coroner spends on postage. Our county government is not perfect (no surprise there), but in the past seven years that I have been following the goings on, I have gained more appreciation for what they do for us. 3. Plan ahead – Make a list of expenses, including people you want to buy for and any incidental expenses that might come up. Think of anything and everything you might spend money on, then pair the list down if it gets out of hand or the expense is unlikely. This goes along with setting a budget and will help keep you from making spontaneous purchases. 4. Only buy for those closest to you – It’s easy to want to buy a gift for everyone you know, but with inflation and the price of things these days, most of us simply cannot afford to buy for our third cousin and the guy at the gas station. Make a list of those closest to you that you are set on buying a gift for, and then assign an upper-limit gift price to help you stay on budget. The list might need to be adjusted if your total exceeds your budget. Everyone else should get a card or something home-made that costs little. Remember, it should be about the thought anyway and not the price of the gift.

aspect of overall wellness is financial wellness. The concept simply means financial freedom and stability. This includes short-term spending, such as during the holidays. 1. Set a budget – The first thing you’ll want to do during the holidays is set a budget. This applies to buying gifts but could also extend to things such as food for holiday meals, travel, gas, and other expenses that are out of the ordinary. The more you can predict what you will spend, the better prepared you’ll be to manage expenses. 2. Avoid using credit cards – It sounds simple, but don’t spend money you don’t have. True, some people are great at managing credit card debt and use it to get perks offered by the credit card companies. Those are typically people who have money and don’t need credit cards in the first place. Unless you are super savvy with money and can pay everything off right away, only buy things with money you have on hand and don’t have to borrow.

UPMC Expert: Health and Wellness The Gifts That Keep on Giving Cynthia Ciccotelli, M.D. UPMC Williamsport Family Medicine Residency

T

he holidays can be a crazy time of year. We’re running from party to party, trying to squeeze in time for family and friends, and we may let our health take a back seat to the hustle and bustle of the season. However, it’s important to carve out time to focus on taking care of your own health. Consider the following tips to be your

best self and enjoy this special time of year: Get moving. Working out encourages our bodies to release the feel-good hormone endorphin which can help relieve stress and other negatives feelings. You may think you’re too tired to squeeze in a workout but don’t skip out. Working out helps energize your body and provides that extra push to get through long days. To maximize health benefits, aim for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week.

Stick to a schedule and don’t overcommit. Stay focused on what is important during the holidays. You don’t have to say yes to every invitation or holiday get-together. We’re creatures of habit, and our bodies like schedules. While it can be hard and FOMO is real, try to stick with your normal, non-holiday routine as much as possible, especially when it comes to mealtimes. It is also important that you stick to a routine sleep schedule and try to get seven to nine hours per night so your body can recharge. Step outside. Natural sunlight can do wonders for your mood, and it stimulates the production of serotonin and Vitamin D, both essential for good health. Hydrate and avoid overindulging. Al-

cohol is a diuretic and can lead to dehydration. Focus on drinking enough water throughout the entire day, as well as drinking a cup of water in between each alcoholic beverage. Also, do not drink and drive — call a friend or assign a designated driver before you head out to your next gathering. Manage your expectations. You don’t have to be perfect to enjoy the holidays. Sometimes good enough is just perfect. Set realistic expectations and don’t worry when things may not go according to plan. Incorporating daily mindfulness techniques can help you manage curveballs that the season may throw your way. Dress for the weather. Winter weather can be unpredictable. Plan ahead to make

some new ones. Our relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and community members can have a major impact on our health and well-being. Take time to develop and nurture friendships. Be kind, say “thanks,” or send a thank-you note. Ask a friend out for coffee. Join a choir, or a book or service club. The opportunities to build social support are nearly endless. This time of year is meant to be enjoyed, so don’t let an injury, illness or stress put a damper on your holiday. As the new year approaches, health and wellness are on the mind which makes it a great time to set up your annual exam with your primary care provider. Talk to your provider about ways to develop an effective wellness plan tailored to your lifestyle and needs, not just for the holidays, but all year round. Cynthia Ciccotelli, M.D., is a third-year resident with the UPMC Williamsport Family Medicine Residency program at UPMC Williamsport. During training, residents complete a Lifestyle Medicine curriculum through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine with the goal of helping patients reverse chronic disease and achieve wellness through lifestyle changes, focusing on diet, exercise, stress management, sleep, socialization, and reducing unhealthy substance use. At the end of residency, they are licensed as Family Medicine physicians and eligible to become board-certified in Lifestyle Medicine. This will allow you to take the steps to slow down and evaluate your health and wellness, helping avoid a potential health issue. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

illiamsport’s community Christmas tree celebration Tuesday evening was a great success in spite of the inclement weather. The tree had been repaired and rebuilt it is now one of the most symmetrical the city has had, and the lighting is so perfectly placed that the illumination is splendidly balanced and the effect beautiful. In spite of the rain there was a goodly audience present when Mayor Hoagland, at the request of the Civic Club’s request, turned on the current and there was a blaze of light through the branches of the big tree that caused the people present to spontaneously break into applause. The exercise opened outside at the tree and moved inside to the big courtroom.

The program opened with a selection by the Repasz Band after which the tree was lit. Mayor Hoagland turned the switch. The invocation was followed by the singing of Christmas carols by the entire assemblage and led by Clyde Harer and the War Singers, in this first Christmas of peace after the war in Europe. Rev. Charles Leonard was the speaker for the evening and addressed an audience which filled the big courtroom. His subject was “Victory” and attired in his uniform, which he wore a few days ago in France, where he was engaged in YMCA work, he gave such an insight into what the present victory meant that the audience regretted that he did not continue to speak longer. The program closed with the singing of “America” sung by the audience, with the Repasz Band leading.

The Three Kings By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Happy T Holidays!

hree Kings came riding from far away, Melchior and Gaspar and Baltasar; Three Wise Men out of the East were they, And they travelled by night and they slept by day, For their guide was a beautiful, wonderful star. The star was so beautiful, large and clear, That all the other stars of the sky Became a white mist in the atmosphere, And by this they knew that the coming was near Of the Prince foretold in the prophecy.

HOLIDAY HOURS:

Three caskets they bore on their saddle-bows, Three caskets of gold with golden keys; Their robes were of crimson silk with rows Of bells and pomegranates and furbelows, Their turbans like blossoming almond-trees.

CELEBRATE THE SOUNDS OF LIFE

And so the Three Kings rode into the West, Through the dusk of the night, over hill and dell, And sometimes they nodded with beard on breast, And sometimes talked, as they paused to rest, With the people they met at some wayside well.

“Of the child that is born,” said Baltasar, “Good people, I pray you, tell us the news; For we in the East have seen his star, And have ridden fast, and have ridden far, To find and worship the King of the Jews.” And the people answered, “You ask in vain; We know of no King but Herod the Great!” They thought the Wise Men were men insane, As they spurred their horses across the plain, Like riders in haste, who cannot wait. And when they came to Jerusalem, Herod the Great, who had heard this thing, Sent for the Wise Men and questioned them; And said, “Go down unto Bethlehem, And bring me tidings of this new king.” So they rode away; and the star stood still, The only one in the grey of morn; Yes, it stopped—it stood still of its own free will, Right over Bethlehem on the hill, The city of David, where Christ was born. And the Three Kings rode through the gate and the guard, Through the silent street, till their horses turned And neighed as they entered the great innyard;

The frankincense, with its odor sweet, Was for the Priest, the Paraclete, The myrrh for the body’s burying.

And cradled there in the scented hay, In the air made sweet by the breath of kine, The little child in the manger lay, The child, that would be king one day Of a kingdom not human, but divine.

And the mother wondered and bowed her head, And sat as still as a statue of stone, Her heart was troubled yet comforted, Remembering what the Angel had said Of an endless reign and of David’s throne.

His mother Mary of Nazareth Sat watching beside his place of rest, Watching the even flow of his breath, For the joy of life and the terror of death Were mingled together in her breast. They laid their offerings at his feet: The gold was their tribute to a King,

Then the Kings rode out of the city gate, With a clatter of hoofs in proud array; But they went not back to Herod the Great, For they knew his malice and feared his hate, And returned to their homes by another way.

can be flattering and fashionable. The best aspect of this color is its availability and accessibility. Peach is far from new; it’s been around for centuries in clothing, design, and beauty. You may already have it in your closet or your home décor. And you don’t necessarily have to buy new peach; vintage or second-hand peach may be right at your fingertips. In all honesty, I can’t really get on board for myself wearing peach; I’m too pale. However, I can see this warm and fuzzy shade really popping in a dress or t-shirt for darker and olive skin tones. If you, like me, are just not suited to sporting 2024’s color of the year, you can still participate in the peach fuzz trend via homewares, beauty, or food.

This spring, it might be time for a linen refresh. I’m thinking of updating our set of guest towels; why not peach? Garnet Hill’s Signature Egyptian Cotton Towels come in light peach, a shade currently on sale. I may go even peachier with updating the mats in peach as well for the second bathroom. There are also novelty items, like stickers, magnets, and coffee mugs with the Pantone logo and a peach fuzz gradient rainbow that can spruce up your home or workplace. For office settings, if it’s appropriate, maybe indulge in a new desk set. Amazon has some cute peach-adjacent options, like a letter tray organizer with file holders in rose gold. Or a staple set, tape holder, and pens also in rose gold. Of course, there are always peachy beauty

products to explore, like L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Satin Lipstick that comes in peach fuzz and a variety of other tones if something more rich is better suited to your complexion. And, while it may not be top of mind, one of the easiest and noncommittable ways of experimenting with this year’s color is through food. Since it’s in the name “peach” this winter, why not bust out your favorite peach cobbler recipes? Come the warmer weather and play around with peach flavors in cocktails, smoothies, and mocktails. So, while you may not be as excited about “Peach Fuzz” as the coming year’s official color for fashion, art, and design, hopefully, you agree that peaches make a great pie.

undertone that sets it apart from the Millennial Pinks that have been on trend in recent years. It definitely has a feminine aesthetic, suited to fuzzy sweaters and slip dresses, but it could easily be genderneutral in khaki shorts and sneakers. It is a far cry from last year’s “Viva Magenta.” In fact, it’s as if the color industry has turned a 180, going from vibrant energy to serene velvet. It’s a good color for spring, though I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking. When I think of peach, not the best things come to mind. First, I have memories of an ugly bridesmaid dress, and second, I have old-timey underwear; think of the girdles and lace slips from the mid-century. However, I can see how certain peaches

W

ith only a few more shopping days before Christmas morning arrives, hopefully, you have taken care of all of the major items on your gift list and can now turn your attention to the last-minute items and the ever-popular “stocking stuffers.” I reflect back fondly, to the early days when the three stockings, hand-knit by my Aunt Tutty, were hung on the fireplace mantle, and as my sister, brother, and I went off to bed on Christmas Eve, each wondering what treasures we might find in them the next morning. The contents of my Christmas stockings were always special. A box or two of Nibs licorice bits, a few Slim Jims, Mary Janes, and some candy canes. If I was lucky, there might be a box of .22 ammunition for target practice, some flies or lures for fishing, and perhaps a subscription to Field & Stream or Outdoor Life. It was always a treasure trove of goodies! Today, the Christmas stocking is still the last place to concentrate some interesting things that will help make the spirit of giving even more fun. Being more aware of healthy eating habits, these days, it is more likely to find homemade fruit rollups, venison snack sticks, and an apple in one’s stocking. Since I have had the good fortune of traveling a good deal and have seen and used some great

gadgets and gear, allow me to make a few suggestions for your Christmas stockings. One of the greatest “gadgets” that I discovered a number of years ago and have been thrilled with its results is the ThermaCell insectrepellant device. It is extremely effective in repelling mosquitoes, gnats, black flies, and other buzzing and annoying flying insects. I have been on spring gobbler hunts, which I may well have abandoned had it not been for my ThermaCell unit to rid the area of these unwanted pests. Gift-wrap one of the units and place it under the Christmas tree with the other gifts, then place several small boxes of the butane containers and/or scent pad replacement containers in a stocking. Case, a knife maker based here in our home state of Pennsylvania, makes a large variety of knives for sportsmen. They produce quality knives of all shapes and sizes, many of which have special features specifically designed for use by hunters, fishermen, campers, or anyone who enjoys quality time in the outdoors. I don’t believe any outdoor enthusiast can ever have “too many” knives, and I don’t know any who wouldn’t be happy to find a new boxed Case knife in their Christmas stocking! Stocking stuffers do not have to be expensive items. A small spray container of a shooter’s favorite gun oil, a clear plastic box with an assortment of trout flies, or a new lure for bass fishing will add nicely to the stocking. A combination unit that has a compass, a whistle, and a waterproof compartment for

Christmas morning means Bing Crosby singing “White Christmas,” Nat King Cole crooning “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” or listening to “Silent Night” as you awake to this very special day. And there is the aroma of bacon frying in a cast iron pan, hot chocolate warming over the stove, and the soothing warmth of a fire in the fireplace! Finally, along with all the other fine gifts placed under the Christmas tree, there is the fun bundle of surprises in the stockings hung by the chimney with care (in hopes that Saint Nicholas would soon be there!). I’m sure some of these regulations and requirements are sometimes a bit distracting from our goal of fishing, but invasive plant and animal species are becoming an increasing problem throughout the country and even here in our state. It’s best that we all do what we can to help prevent some unwanted weed from taking over our favorite lake, and it’s already happening in some places. Now, if we can just get some ice-cold weather for a while, some of us can start hitting the lakes. I’ll bet there’s a lot of people wishing for that!

The commission also recommends that you drain your bilge and live well before leaving the area where you were boating. I prefer to keep my panfish catch in my live well until I get home, where I then drain it in the driveway; I’ll have to check to see if that’s approved. You should also be careful not to release any unused bait into the water you are fishing; if you don’t intend to use it again, take it home and dispose of it.

I have shared with Bill Byham, Ken Sawyer, Mike Fogarty, and others over the years all had their beginnings on that long-ago Christmas morning. As the years have gone by, Jean has often spoken of the many great ‘gifts’ we have received through our association with sporting activities. While they have not come wrapped in colorful paper from QVC or UPS, those trips, friendships, and experiences give testament to the joys provided by the sports that surround us. So, we offer this reminder that after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season subsides, take some time to ‘unwrap’ the many ‘gifts’ on display in gymnasiums across the region skillfully displayed by the hoopsters and wrestlers in your local community. They will appreciate your interest, and the memories created will warm the chill of the upcoming winter. Twas a few days before Christmas, and people did scurry, To find all those last-minute gifts in a hurry, It matters not if it’s a ball, sweater or hat, Giving to others – that’s where it is at. truly appreciated gifts. We all have those gift memories on the receiving end. I was one of those kids who loved to listen to the radio broadcasts of MLB games. The men-behind-the-mic of those days were in my ears and eyes as bigger than life. The Phillies by Saam, the Dodgers’ Red Barber, Vince Scully, and the Pirates’ Bob Prince had the perfect jobs as far as I was concerned. I had even gotten up the nerve to write a letter to Saam asking him for advice as to getting into baseball broadcasting. I was thrilled when I received his reply, which I still have to this day. Somehow, Santa got word about my fixation with the game and, under the tree, was found a most-welcomed and still remembered Christmas present. It was a reel-to-reel tape recorder complete with a microphone and all the needed trimmings. By today’s modern standards, that recorder would best be described as a monstrosity. It was large and somewhat heavy, but to me, it was a thing of beauty. That gift would provide countless hours of enjoyment as I ‘broadcast’ make-believe games and statistical data in the privacy of my bedroom ‘studio,’ hoping one day to do it ‘for real’ as my MLB announcer heroes were doing. Although that ultimate goal went unfulfilled, the many local broadcasts

The ride home is the best part. It goes so quickly. It always does. My son and I talk basketball, and we listen to MY music. We talked about the game. We reflected on a few plays and laughed at the ones that didn’t go our way. It is healthy back-and-forth banter. Comical actually. Jensen asked some great questions on this trip. He is fascinated with basketball. Did you play in college? Who was the best player you played against? Who was the best player that you coached? Coolest venue you played in? Biggest win as a player and a coach? I answered the best I could. My son learned some pretty cool things about me. Oh, it was a fantastic road trip — one of my all-time favorites. I made the right choice. Merry Christmas, sports fans. Cheers.

was great. He lowered his shoulder and got caught on two occasions. I didn’t complain or question. I was super proud of my son for taking it to the basket and on to the next. Since it was a triple header, Jensen didn’t have to stay for the JV and Varsity games. The entire group traveled together in style. They always do, but the 9th graders were allowed to head home with their parents. Jensen and I wanted to play it by ear. I recognized the D2 officials. One of them came over to me during the JV game. We had a great chat. He called a few of our state playoff games. I thought it was pretty neat that he also remembered. I turned to see if Jensen was equally impressed. Unfortunately, Jensen missed the entire conversation. He was busy on Snapchat.
