The game may not have gone the way the Mounties wanted a couple of weeks back. The Steam Rollers have given schools much larger than South fits over the years in both football and basketball. However, I want to congratulate the South Williamsport footballers, coaches, school district, and Mountie Nation for representing the community as champions. Along the way, Coach Eiswerth became South’s all-time winningest coach and eclipsed the 100win mark. Congratulations to everybody who contributed to South’s amazing season. It takes a village to raise champions. I can guarantee that the players who made it happen will remember the journey together for a lifetime. God Bless America.

he federal government in Washington, has an advantage that state, county, and municipal governments do not have. These governments must have the money to meet their budgets through either taxes, grants, or investments. The federal government has these as well, but it also has the ability to create money. They literally represent the saying, “Money is no object.” This is vividly illustrated by the national debt. As of May 2023, the national debt is more than $31.5 trillion. A trillion is one million millions. To get an idea of how much that is, imagine you could spend $1 million every day — it would take you 2,740 YEARS to spend just one trillion dollars. (Something to think about the next time we vote for our representatives in Washington). Our local governments have to get their money the old-fashioned way, and the best way is one that does not stick it to the taxpayer. This is why the Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting on Thursday, November 30th, was significant and extremely satisfy-

ing. After nearly ten years of back-andforth legal struggles, a mutual settlement agreement in the lawsuit against Lobar Inc. Construction Services was finally reached. This case revolved around a leachate storage tank for the Lycoming County Resource Management Services, or what is better known as the Lycoming County landfill. This may not sound like such a big deal, but leachate cannot be ignored. For an example, think of a coffee maker. Water is poured into the coffee maker and flows through the ground coffee beans to create the coffee. Now imagine the water that comes from rainfall onto a landfill. It would

not create something you would want to drink. This highlights the necessity for a sanitized landfill, such as the one in Brady Township, to have a working leachate tank. And this is what the landfill thought they were getting in 2013 when Lobar installed the 7.5-million-gallon leachate tank. However, almost immediately, the landfill operators realized that it did not work as it was intended to. And thus, the next ten years went back and forth to resolve this problem. The County had no choice but to litigate the issue. It was with this context that very good news was announced by the County’s Solicitor, J. Mike Wiley. He told the commissioners, “The way the tank is supposed to function is the liner is supposed to hold the leachate; that’s the primary containment system, and the concrete tank is there as a secondary system. The issue in the lawsuit was the liner was not functioning as intended. The County went through the process of trying to find leaks to fix it, but ultimately came to a conclusion, with the help of our experts, that we weren’t going to be able to work with the liner that was installed, and therefore, another liner contractor was selected, a new

liner was installed. That’s in the process of getting finally approved by the EPA and the tank should be functional here in the not-too-distant future.” Solicitor Wiley summed up his presentation by telling the commissioners, “It’s been a struggle that is over with a good result.” He was not kidding. Lobar is making no admission of liability by the company but will pay just over $2.9 million to the County. The Lycoming County Resource Management Services and their director, Jason Yorks, continue to be an incredible asset, working diligently to resolve the decade-long struggle. Over the past five years, $12.5 million has gone into the general fund from the revenue generated by the landfill. And with this settlement, the costs for the last decade for the difficulties are being paid for as well. Hats off to the legal team as well; they did a great job. I am sure they will be rewarded for their effort. As a woman once asked the famous lawyer Clarence Darrow what she could do for him after he had solved her legal trouble, he responded, “My dear woman, ever since the Phoenicians invented money there has been only one answer to that question.”

ith the holidays upon us, Webb’s Weird Words returns to its fall-season focus on etymology — that is, word origins. This week and next, I’ll unpack two dozen terms we rarely use except at Christmastime: words like noel, manger, poinsettia and egg nog, for example. Our first batch below is largely religious, with secular terms saved for December 20th. (And for the record: We’re interested here only in the actual words — what they mean, and where they came from; so I won’t cover broader traditions like why we kiss under mistletoe and so forth.) Advent – The one word this week that’s often used elsewhere, it means “arrival” or “coming into place” (as in, “the advent of TV”). When capitalized, it refers to the arrival of Christ, and marks a time of preparation over four Sundays before Christmas (different denominations use slightly different dates). Etymologically, it derives from two very common Latin elements: the prefix a(d), meaning to or toward (as in advance, attract and countless others); plus ven(t), meaning to come — from which we get

dozens of words (intervene, convention, venture, the Spanish venir, etc.). Bethlehem – In ancient Hebrew, the name of this “little town” means “house of bread.” Beth = “house,” and is thus often used for Jewish synagogues like Williamsport’s Beth Ha Sholom (“house of peace”) or Sunbury’s Beth-El (“house of God”). Christmas – As you may have guessed, this is simply a more pronounceable version of “Christ’s Mass,” referring of course to the Catholic worship service. For Xmas, see below. Epiphany – Sometimes used as a common noun meaning sudden revelation (“I had an epiphany!”), Epiphany, when capitalized, refers to a religious holiday — in this case Jan. 6, memorializing Jesus’ being revealed to the wise men (or “magi”; see below). This marks the 12th day after Dec. 25, and thus concludes the famous “12 days of Christmas.” In fact, the January holiday is sometimes referred to as 12th Day — or (especially if you’re a Shakespeare fan) 12th Night. The Latin base phan means “to appear” or “show”; it occurs in other words such as phantom, fantasy and emphasize. Frankincense, Myrrh – Along with

most certainly visited much later than the night of his birth; Matt. 2:11 says “house,” not “stable.” Manger – While it has been somewhat romanticized by frequent carols and Christmas-story readings, a manger is nothing more than a feeding trough — perhaps not a terribly sanitary cradle for a holy baby! The original Latin word means “to eat” or “chew” and also gave us mandible, mange and masticate, along with the famous Italian mother’s mandate, “Mangia!” Nativity – Another regular word that rarely gets used except in December, it simply means birth. From the Latin nat, which gave us hundreds of words: native, nation, nature, prenatal, innate, Renaissance and many others — along with this next one: Noel – Shortened from the Latin natalis dies, or “birthday,” noel can mean Christmas — or a carol for that season. (We’ll cover “carol” next week!) Xmas – In younger days I was alarmed that this abbreviation seemed to deliberately omit the very person for which the day is named — until I learned that the X is not a “cross out,” but rather stands for chi, first Greek letter in “Christ.” So merry Xmas after all — and watch here for another batch of holiday terms next week!

child by the wise men in Matthew 2:11. Both are pleasant-smelling, tree-based gum resins; the former is also called olibanum and literally means incense that is “true,” “noble” or “superior.” According to the Biblical Archaeology Society, all three items were “standard gifts to honor a king or deity in the ancient world.” Holiday – A simple contraction of “holy day,” reminding us that throughout human history — and oddly contrary to much modern custom — most such observances had a religious origin. Kris Kringle – Popularized in the 1947 film Miracle on 34th Street, this alternate name for Santa Claus is a slight variation of the German Christkindl, meaning “Christ child.” (That’s kind(l), as in the better-known kindergarten!) Long before St. Nick, he was the traditional gift-bringer in much of Central Europe. Magi – Traditional name for famed foreign visitors who came to see the young Jesus. Translating the Bible’s actual term magoi, it probably refers to high-ranking priests or religious figures rather than to “kings” per se. The base mag, incidentally, also gave us magic. Contrary to popular tradition — as in, for example, “We Three Kings,” which was written by a Williamsport pastor — the Bible never says how many there were; that is simply inferred from the

The value of the merchandise of which they were equipped with the extraordinary demands of the Christmas shoppers was enormous, but not too big in the opinion of the retailers to fulfill their desire to provide everything a shopper might want. had to have been the hardest one. The devastation we all felt. The first Christmas after my parents divorced was a quick second. That hit differently, too. But each one has been special in their own way. My pap got to spend Christmas with Jesus! How amazing is it to go to heaven on Jesus’ birthday? Can you imagine the celebration? And last year was the first year since I was 19 years old that I spent Christmas with my mom and dad together for Christmas dinner. It was amazing. I’m so anxious for this year’s dinner and what my parents and in-laws will be a part of this year. (Shhh — it’s a Christmas secret!) And NO. No baby train, folks. That Christmas train has left the station, baby! Haha!! I’m so thankful for the continued surprises, traditions, and memories being made. I’m thankful to feel like a kid again at Christmas and pray I never get too old to watch the sky on Christmas Eve. Christmas is right around the corner, folks!

Turn on that song that instantly takes you back to being that little girl or boy at Christmas. Whether it’s Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” or “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby, it’s sure to give you all the Christmas feels from past and present. It’s too funny as I sit here writing this because one of my childhood favorite albums just came on the radio. Alabama CHRISTMAS, we also had on vinyl. Christmas Memories, of course, hits differently now, too. Christmas Memories of happy years gone by They come back to me and make me warm inside Still, those Christmas memories mean so much to me Oh, those Christmas memories make me cry The timing that this song came on was perfect. I am so thankful for all the wonderful Christmases over the past 38 years. Most of them are absolutely wonderful. But in a few of them, I felt heartache. • 1 and ½ cups of vanilla cake mix (½ box of standard cake mix) • 1/4 cup of oil • 3-4 tablespoon sprinkles, I just red, green and white jimmies • 7 oz container marshmallow cream • 3 cups of mini marshmallows • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter • 3 cups crisped rice cereal, I used Sugar Cookie Pebbles Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. To make the first layer, mix together cake mix, egg, sprinkles and oil. Press into greased 9x9 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. For the second layer, remove the cake mix layer from the oven and put spoonfuls of the marshmallow cream on top. Allow the marshmallow cream to heat and spread out on its own. While waiting, make the top layer. Microwave 1½ tablespoons of butter for 20 seconds in a large bowl, until melted. Add 3 cups of mini marshmallows and stir to coat. Microwave for 45 seconds and stir until smooth. (If the marshmallows aren’t completely melted, microwave for an additional 30 seconds.)

Mix in 3 cups of crisped rice cereal. Carefully spread the marshmallow cream out evenly. Then, drop the crisped rice mixture by large spoonfuls over the marshmallow cream layer and carefully spread out evenly. Add more holiday sprinkles. Allow the bars to cool and set before cutting them into squares. They spread once they are cut, so you might want to wait to cut them until right before serving.

son is NYC Blonde, which is a bit darker than platinum blonde and comes across as more effortless and low maintenance. There’s also shimmering blonde, which is a shade of platinum with a bit of yellow-y warmth in the base. The idea behind this blond is that it can almost sparkle in the sunlight. If you’re game to try a bright, shimmery blond, ask your colorist about a faux beach and tone technique that gets the hair as blond as possible without bleaching each strand. When used with Olaplex (a salon-professional bond repair cream), any potential damage to the hair can be mitigated. Winter is dry enough on your hair; keeping it healthy will only make your color more vibrant. Early this fall, red surfaced as a trending color for sweaters and shoes; now, as the year is approaching, it’s also becoming a popular choice for hair. In fact, copper red is the current “it” color moving into the new year. Copper contains both hints of golden and strawberry for

a supernatural red shade. However, this tone of red is a commitment, as red fades faster than other colors. Be prepared for more trips to the salon to keep up with the maintenance of this hair color. Another tone of red that’s having a moment is a bright cherry shade. This red has more purple undertones than its copper counterpart. You can go with a full head of cherry red or work it through mid-lengths and ends for an ombre effect. Having “dipped ends” is a fun way to celebrate the season and can be a festive send-off for longer locks you’re thinking of chopping off in the new year. Temporary hair colors are an easier way of playing around with different shades here this winter and are cheaper alternatives than multiple trips to the salon. So, if you’re interested in switching up your color with the change of season, maybe try some at-home trials to see which blond, brunette, or redhead is right for you.

when they inhale. While this will keep you alive, it is somewhat inefficient. Conversely, diaphragmatic breathing calls for relaxation of the chest and an expansion of the belly to draw breath. Think of a sleeping infant. This technique allows for an increase in lung capacity and efficiency. Try lying flat with one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. The goal is to only allow the hand on your belly to rise. Slowly inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Allow your “abdomen” to fill with air, then slowly contract those muscles as you exhale. With a little practice, it will be easy to master. Box breathing: This simple technique involves an inhale of 4 seconds, a hold for 4 seconds, an exhale of 4 seconds, then another hold for 4 seconds. Continue this pattern for 5 minutes or more. Personally, my preferred method of choice is deep breathing with a 5-second inhale and a 5-second exhale in a tranquil spot. I began with 5 minutes and, with time, was able to quickly increase my time to 30 minutes. To be honest, I thought I would get bored, but I have learned that if I focus on my breathing by counting to 5 on the inhale/exhale the time flies. When I am distracted, I simply let stray thoughts float away. When I’m finished, I find that my stress has melted away, and my mental focus is much improved. No one should be intimidated by breathing exercises, and everyone can start with just a few minutes a day and work up from there.

looking in the mirror for more than a second, you never heard the end of it. Someone teaching breathing techniques to relieve stress would not have lasted long. Flash forward to middle age. Two health degrees and decades of experience, and I think something so simple as breath control may be one of the greatest discoveries, at least for me, in the last couple of millennia. In fact, I practice simple breathing techniques as part of my daily routine and have found them to be extremely effective for reducing stress and increasing mental focus, so much so that I would put it up there with exercise and nutrition as basic pillars for health. Here are a few basic techniques that are easy to learn: Deep breathing: The autonomic nervous system has several components, including the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system controls a person’s fight-or-flight response, whereas the parasympathetic nervous system controls a person’s rest-and-relax response. Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system by allowing your body to deliver an increase of oxygen to the brain and also by signaling that it is OK to relax. Expert Dr. John Kennedy recommends focusing on long, controlled breaths with an emphasis exhalation to stimulate the vagus nerve, which causes a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure. Diaphragmatic (Belly) Breathing: Many people have a habit of breathing from the chest by lifting their chest

UPMC Cardiologist: Improve Heart Health By Reducing Stress This Holiday Season

he holiday season is right around the corner, a time packed full of gift-giving, shopping extravaganzas, parties, and activities galore. While this season is meant to bring feelings of love and cheer, it can also be one of the most stressful times, putting added strain on your heart. Stress is a part of life, and everyone responds to stress a little differently. While stress itself is not going to set you up for heart disease, your behavior, and the way you deal with stress can play a role in heart health. When you experience stress, your body releases cortisol and adrenaline to initiate the “fight or flight” response. This reaction gives you a burst of energy and strength to fight off or run away from a perceived threat. But if stress is always present and the body is constantly preparing to fight or flee, that elevated cortisol level can lead to anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and weight gain.

It also can lead indirectly to high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Beat the holiday stress this year and learn to love the holidays while keeping your heart health in check with the following simple tips: Eat Healthfully – Plan ahead when you’re attending big gatherings. Look over all the food offerings and pick and choose carefully — moderation is key. Remember, you don’t have to sample everything. Make sure you are choosing nutritious options such as fruits and vegetables for more energy. Limit Alcohol Consumption – Just like with food, moderation is key. Enjoy the holiday, but remember to treat your body well, so you have the energy, stamina, and health to make it through all your holiday celebrations. Alcohol can interrupt sleep patterns, cause stomach issues, and increase depression. Exercise – Don’t let a busy schedule get in the way of enjoying healthy activities. Regular exercise is a great stress-reducing tool and outlet for the body. Additionally, it helps you sleep

with fatigue and sleeplessness, it is a signal that you need to step back and take some time for yourself. Sleep is your body’s way to recharge, and people who don’t sleep enough are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease — regardless of age, weight, smoking, and exercise habits. Don’t Overcommit – Stay focused on what is important during the holidays. You don’t have to say yes to every invitation or holiday get-together. Consider what is best for you, it will help you deal with the stress of this busy time of year. Listen to Your Body – If you start to get tired or worn down, it’s time to look at rebalancing your life commitments.

Recognizing the signals your body is sending you will allow you to take the steps to slow down and evaluate your health and wellness, helping avoid a potential health issue. If you have symptoms such as chest pains, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fatigue, listen to what your body is telling you and call 911 as these could be warning signs of a heart attack. Talk About It – Stress is not something you have to handle alone. Let your family and friends know if you’re feeling overly stressed. Sometimes just talking about your stress will help you feel better, and those you’re sharing with may be able to help you reduce your stress.

Stress can really take its toll on the heart, so it’s important to learn to manage your stress levels not just over the holidays, but year-round. If you’re looking for help, talk to your provider who can help you develop an effective stress-reduction plan tailored to your lifestyle and needs. Thomas Scott, D.O., is a cardiologist with UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and sees patients at the Health Innovation Center, 740 High St., Williamsport. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Scott, call 570-321-2800, and to learn more about UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute services, go to UPMC. com/HeartNCPA.

A

s Christmas shoppers scurry around doing their Christmas shopping, it might be good to remember the golden days when downtown Williamsport was the retail center of northcentral Pennsylvania. There were department stores such as L.L. Stearns, Bush and Bull, Penney’s, Sears and Roebuck, and the Carroll House. The Carroll House was one of downtown Williamsport’s most popular retail destinations for almost 45 years. The building the Carroll House occupied at the southwest corner of Pine and West Third streets was originally occupied by A.H. Heilman Furniture, who constructed the building in the late 1890s. In August 1930, the Interstate Store Company acquired the former Heilman building and opened a department store at that location called Lycoming Dry Goods. The new department store opened on September 27, 1930, with more than 1,000 visitors passing through its

doors from opening until closing at 9 p.m. The Williamsport Sun on September 26, 1930, described it this way in part, “The first floor presents a new appearance along every line. Near the middle of the building, a spacious stairway leads to the downstairs store. The elevator in the building has been completely renovated; Advanced styles of show spaces are installed, giving a maximum of display with a minimum of space.” Soon, Lycoming Dry Goods became one of Williamsport’s premier stores. A change took place in 1947 when the store was renamed the “Carroll House,” the name most people can still remember it by. At this time, the store was extensively renovated. The Carroll House had 65 different departments, and at one time, it had a large warehouse on Hepburn Street. At the height of the store’s popularity, it employed more than 100 people, but at the time it closed, this number was down to about 50. The Carroll House was air-conditioned in 1956, and the second and

this Williamsport retail institution. The Carroll House closed for business in May 1974. The ownership of the Carroll House building went to the Northern Central Bank, the trustee for the Heilman family. In late 1974, Fidelity Bank acquired the building and used it as a bank and administrative center. It remained in Fidelity’s hands for several years. The Carroll House may be gone now, but it is a pleasant memory of the Christmas shopping seasons of the past.

I know for me; it was the best place to look for coveted toys other than Krim’s Toy Store. The Carroll House continued to serve area consumers well throughout the 1960s and into the early 1970s. In 1974, the store was caught up in a corporate reorganization by its parent company, and they decided to close

Hebrews 3:12-13 warns us: See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. Be careful not to allow your heart to harden. self-loathing, and self-destruction. It is bad pain. After betraying Jesus, Judas was overcome with guilt – and he hung himself. See Matthew 27:35. Guilt is a tool of Satan. At this point, it is important to provide a warning: continual rejection of the Spirit’s convicting grace risks the development of a hard heart. A hard heart is unable to respond to God’s grace. It is likely the source of what is referred to as the unpardonable sin. In Matthew 12:31-32 Jesus says: And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be

grace today – tomorrow may be too late. 2. Awakening is a hopeful form of God’s grace, making the fallen aware that they can be reconciled and restored - and the failure redeemed. Jesus clearly describes awakening grace when telling the story of the Prodigal Son. See Luke 15:17-19. For King David, it was after his sin was exposed by Nathan the Prophet. David celebrates God’s awakening grace in Psalm 51. Awakening grace provides the powerful hope and strength we need to take our first steps toward redemption. Again, the backstory to redemption always begins with God’s convicting and awakening grace. Once given, we then have the opportunity to respond with confession, surrender, and restitution. 3. Confession is the full description and ownership of the failure. It is the end of cover-up, fixing, blame-shifting, and excuse-making. It is accepting that the failure cannot be fixed, nor the damage undone. It is the death of pride and self-protection. See I John 1:9, Luke 15:21, and Psalm 51. Confession declares to God that

we need a Savior. We’ll talk specifically about confession in next week’s article. 4. Surrender is yielding the full control of life and its outcomes to God. Surrender opens the heart to God’s transformational sanctifying grace! See Romans 6:15-23. Surrender declares to God our understanding that we need the Lordship of Jesus Christ over our lives. 5. Restitution is our ownership of the negative consequences suffered by others because of our failures. It is the effort to help make victims whole again. Zacchaeus provides a prime example of restitution in Luke 19. Like confession, restitution is a discipline that helps us to learn the hard lessons of failure – and strengthens our resistance against temptation. When we have taken these God-empowered steps, God’s grace then carries us towards full redemption. 6. Reconciliation is God making us right with God. Reconciliation is made available through the saving work of Jesus Christ. It is being born again. It is the declaration of God that He is raising a new life. See John 3:1-21, II Corinthians 5:17, and Ro-

redemption: Then I will teach transgressors your ways so that sinners will turn back to you. In I Timothy 1:12-17, Paul celebrates redemption: But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Remember, today is the day to take the narrow path to redemption. God’s grace has opened the door for you. You may not have tomorrow. Don’t wait any longer to respond to his grace.

movies. Next up would be a new one released last year called Violent Night. It’s like Die Hard meets Home Alone — with more guns. Joe Smith: Much as I love George Bailey, Kevin McAllister and Ebenezer Scrooge, I have to go with Charlie Brown. Though not exactly a “movie,” A Charlie Brown Christmas remains the one viewing experience that instantly transports me back to my childhood holidaze. (Ever notice how nostalgia plays a huge part in the ambience of Christmas?) That Guaraldi music; those genuine laughs; such a great message; Linus reading the King James Bible; the use of real kid-voices (a switch for animation, where child parts had been handled largely by adults). For me, the occasionally glitchy animation (admitted by veteran artist Bill Melendez, who did nearly all the Peanuts shows) is part of the deliberately low-key charm. With its episodic, almost avant-garde storyline, it really does feel like a comic strip come to life. Watch this space next week for a whole column of behind-the-scenes trivia about this beloved 58-year-old gem.

hair, and Rita Wilson. This 1994 screwball comedy is set at a crisis hotline center on Christmas Eve and features a great cast of characters with Madeline Kahn, Rob Reiner, Robert Klein, Juliette Lewis and Adam Sandler, to name a few. I don’t watch this every year, but you used to be able to catch it every so often on cable. Definitely one of those quirky movies you’d watch until the end no matter when you started. Jon Pries: Love Actually. Set in jolly old England, it is a fun movie with multiple storylines that all resolve and come together in the end. Full of good and well-known actors. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and pop some popcorn, pour your favorite beverage and watch it! Ken Hunter: My favorite Christmas movie was National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Chevy Chase was very entertaining. Steph Nordstrom: I’m not a huge fan of Christmas movies, so I like to go the non-traditional route (though Christmas Vacation is a strong contender). I’m leading the way with Die Hard or the Harry Potter movies, and I’ll die on the hill that they ARE Christmas

ARIES – Mar 21–Apr 20 Take it easy this week, Aries. You may need to coast for a little bit rather than racing that car around every turn. Enjoy all the simple things you can do and cherish the memories. TAURUS – Apr 21–May 21 Taurus, if you cannot be yourself with your friends, then with whom? Let down your defenses and do what you want this week, especially if you are celebrating at a social event. No one will be judging. GEMINI – May 22–Jun 21 Gemini, devote some time to planning your vision of the future, rather than just focusing on the work in front of you. It is wise to be planning months ahead to set yourself up for success. CANCER – Jun 22–Jul 22 Others may tell you to get your head out of the clouds, Cancer, but you can leave it right there. It pays to dream a little because you never know when great ideas will come to you. LEO – Jul 23–Aug 23 Put your emotions first, Leo. Rather than thinking with your head, you need to think with your heart. You have to trust your gut and make decisions based on intuition right now. VIRGO – Aug 24–Sept 22 Virgo, empathy will come very easily to you this week, when you can easily put yourself in someone else’s shoes and know just what they

are feeling. Continue to support your friends. LIBRA – Sept 23–Oct 23 Motivations may be running low right now regarding improving your health, Libra. You can start thinking of strategies to put into effect for New Year’s resolutions. SCORPIO – Oct 24–Nov 22 Try to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground this week, Scorpio. Various distractions are trying to knock you off course, but you don’t have time for that now. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23–Dec 21 You need to put family first right now, Sagittarius. Every other thing that is in your orbit should take a back seat to familial obligations and the needs of loved ones. CAPRICORN – Dec 22–Jan 20 Capricorn, a conversation with a neighbor or colleague can begin on a casual note and then grow into something much more profound. Always keep your eyes open to possibilities. AQUARIUS – Jan 21–Feb 18 There are more ways to increase your income without having to resort to backbreaking work, Aquarius. Look around to explore the possibilities that might be out there. PISCES – Feb 19–Mar 20 Pisces, rather than trying to fit in this week, march to the beat of your own drummer. You’ll soon find a squad who thinks similarly to you. Then you can enjoy long-lasting friendship.

ith a desire to serve God and the community in love and with a willingness to work hard and follow biblical concepts are the foundation stones on which Muncy Christian Fellowship has been recently established at Brummer Pond Road and E. Penn Street, Muncy. A team of foundational members was formed from an overflowing home Bible study group. They were willing and desired to be part of this church planting journey. We felt lead by God and saw His hand and His blessings on every turn as

we have moved forward to meet a need in Muncy/Hughesville area. Currently there is not a Restoration Movement Christian church in the southeastern part of Lycoming County. Statement of beliefs, and a church website are currently being established as well as a set of church bylaws with the help of a local attorney. We are thankful for the overwhelming support of area pastors from our sister churches. Their willingness to help and pray and share the years of wisdom they have has been one of our greatest blessings.

Where God guides, He provides for those who truly seek Him and His will. Muncy Christian Fellowship meets Sundays at 10 a.m. We have had many visitors and are growing. We just hosted a Thanksgiving appreciation dinner for those attending MCF and for Masons Lodge 299, whose fellowship hall we rent. They have gone out of their way, with piano tuning and providing a very nice facility for our start up. We had around 110 in attendance. We are currently supporting Samaritan’s Purse and doing Christmas shoeboxes for children, we also work with Expectations Women’s Center, and we will be expanding our missions as we move forward.

As a part of the Restoration Movement churches, we take holy communion weekly, and believe in water baptism by immersion for the forgiveness of sins and receiving the Holy Spirit as Acts 2:38 says. Muncy Christian Fellowship has a gifted music and vocal team. We incorporate a blend of hymns, worship songs, chorus’, as well as contemporary songs at a volume pleasing for all ages. We look forward, with the Lord’s leading and guidance to see where He guides this body of believers. We welcome all ages of people, and our service is set up that way. We believe the unsaved is the unsaved, whatever the age. Matt 28:19, the great commission says to all people.

Though it might look like one, “The Reformatory” is not just a ghost story. It’s tighter, scarier, more ominous because this tale has deep roots based in truth. Like the tentacles belonging to some sort of evil creature, Jim Crow laws ooze into every corner of this book, wrapping tendrils around the characters and their lives. That’s a terror that’s told authentically and is (un)easy to imagine, but then author Tananarive Due kicks the frights into maximum overdrive with ghosts and madmen that you can sometimes barely tell apart. Even scarier: they’re inside The Reformatory, and outside it, and they want revenge – both of the otherworldly kind and based in reality. Scarier still: they’re willing to make deals. If you have a heart condition, you might want to pass on this book because it’ll raise your pulse rate to the roof. If you’re healthy and brave, though, look for “The Reformatory.” When it comes to scary novels, you’ll never do better.

sister. It was 1950 and every Black person knew that you didn’t do that to somebody who was white, but Robert kicked before he could stop himself and he was arrested. And here he was, twelve years old, on his way to a place where Papa said was where the killing started. But Papa wasn’t around anymore, having been run out of town for his union work. It was just Gloria, Robert, and old Miz Lottie, and Robert was terrified. Ever since he was little, he’d been able to see things nobody else could see. He told Gloria that Mama visited him sometimes, even though she’d been dead for months. He knew things, too; the closer the car got to The Reformatory, the more he knew he couldn’t stay there for the next six months. The place smelled like smoke, but there were no fires. It smelled like death and fear. He had to trust that Gloria would get him home. He’d trust Mama to watch over him. He could see “haints” at The Reformatory. The place was full of them...

n less than two weeks, the official start of winter — December 21 to be exact — will be upon us. As winter weather settles in and spending time by the fireplace becomes a much more enjoyable pastime, you might want to take time to focus your attention on some springtime activities in order to get your mind off of Mother Nature’s winter stranglehold. Let’s start by planning out what we can do this coming spring to better the habitat for deer, turkeys, grouse, and other wildlife. Consider creating two maps if your property is large enough to warrant this approach. One map should be of your own property, showing fields, forested areas, and logging roads along with water seeps, streams, or ponds. The second map should encompass the neighboring properties, with your property centered in the map, which will help identify what woodlots, crop-producing fields, and abandoned fields surround your own property. Knowing what kind of

habitat already surrounds your own acreage will help identify what can best be done to improve the cover and food sources you currently have available. All wildlife tends to prefer a varied habitat and a variety of foods. Once you have determined what already exists, you can more easily decide how to manage your own property. You might consider doing a total clearcut or two in forested areas, where the acreage could be as small as 1/4 acre or as large as 5 acres. Wildlife prefers edges, so rather than a simple square-shaped opening, consider making it a long rectangle or perhaps an “S” or “C” shape. Along the edges of the new opening, some logs can be stacked in a crisscross pattern, and some treetops left or brush piles created to house or protect nesting birds or cottontail rabbits. Once the sunlight is now able to hit the forest floor, seeds that have been dormant for years will begin to sprout, producing new nesting and bedding areas. Initially, you can ex-

Fruit-bearing and mast-bearing trees and shrubs are a very beneficial addition to any habitat improvement site. Generally speaking, they are best planted along edges — either just outside food plots or along woodland borders. Standard apple trees, mulberry, and wild pear trees bear well in our area. Butternut trees, a wide variety of oak trees, and recently-developed strains of blight-resistant chestnut trees are good producers also. A variety of shrubs that can either be interspersed with the tree seedlings or planted in clumps by themselves will benefit wildlife. Consider elderberries, American hazelnut, or Serviceberries as additions to your habitat improvement efforts. Caution: All of these tree and shrub seedlings are vulnerable to browsing by deer and rodents. You will need to provide some degree of protection and maintenance for them for several years until they are well established. Planning now for these springtime planting activities will help chase away the winter doldrums, and by the time you lay out your game plan and order your materials, it will be time to get outside and start planting!

pect to see blackberries, raspberries, and seedlings of fire cherry and some evergreens filling in the opening. If you are fortunate enough to have logging roads running through your woods, these roadbeds and roadsides are prime locations to plant grasses, clovers, and other legumes, which not only provide a food source for wildlife but also help prevent soil erosion. Off to the sides of these logging roads is another great spot to build log piles or brush piles for nesting and escape locations for small game and birds. Great rewards will come by upgrading abandoned fields if they exist on your property. It is good to leave some of the open fields untouched, but developing a few food plots, varying in size from 1/4 acre to one or two acres will really draw and hold game. Field corn or soybeans are a top choice, but if they are already an established crop on a neighboring property, you might consider a mix of clovers or some of the food plot mixes that have been developed for deer, turkeys, and other wildlife. The greatest key to a successful food plot is to take adequate soil samples and adhere to their recommendations.

Bear Talk

L

iving in this part of Pennsylvania, it’s certainly not unusual for the topic of black bears to come up in a conversation, and that’s especially true during the bear hunting seasons. More and more people, including many who don’t hunt, are reporting sightings of bears than ever before. There’s a good reason for these increased sightings since there are more bears now in Pennsylvania than ever before and Game Commission biologists now estimate the state’s population to be well over 15,000 black bears. Today’s numbers are a far cry from the estimated 4,000 that roamed our state back in the 1970s. Sightings are definitely on the increase, and in our travels around our home area in northern Montour County, my wife and I have seen more than a half-dozen black

bears, with several walking by our front door or down our driveway. Of course, with the increased number of bears in our state, there has been an increase in nuisance bear conflicts. I did a little Ken checking, and I found that Hunter in the 13 counties that comprise the Game Commission’s Northeast Region, there were about 600 nuisance reports annually. In the year 2000 that number increased to 813 and in 2001 it was over 1,000. In 2002, nuisance bear conflicts went to over 1,100 in the Northeast Region. As expected over the years, as our bear numbers have increased, we have also had increases in the bears taken in hunting seasons. Adding to those increased harvest numbers is also the fact that we have increased our bear hunting opportunities with added seasons.

WMUs 2B, 5C, and 5D, five were taken, and in the Muzzleloader, Archery, and Special Firearms Season, another 1,226 were harvested. The Regular Firearms Statewide Season accounted for another 1,081, with the Extended Firearms Season bringing in another 578 for a season total of 2,890. While it doesn’t surprise me, it is interesting to note how the harvest numbers ran during the four-day Statewide Firearms Season; opening day Saturday accounted for 698

bears, and on Sunday, 237 were taken. On Monday, 117, and on Tuesday, only 29 were killed; as expected, a steady decrease in numbers each day. When looking at the northcentral part of the state, as usual, Lycoming County was up near the top on the bear take with 168, with Tioga County coming in first with 175. As you also might expect, heavily forested and thinly populated, Potter County came in next with 151. My own little county — Montour

— had a total of two bears taken, with the surrounding counties of Columbia with 27 and Northumberland with 10. There are obviously still a lot of bears roaming around out there and many have not yet started to den up. Just yesterday somebody showed me a photo of a bear he saw near his home. You could still see a bear roaming the countryside, especially a male, since they are usually later to den up, so keep your eyes open.

In 2019, 4,653 bears were taken in hunting seasons, and to this day, it is still our highest-ever harvest. In 2021, 3,628 bears were taken, and in 2022, 3,170 were harvested. The seven top bear harvests have all occurred since 2005. Surprisingly, this year’s total bear harvest has not made it to the 3,000 mark. While that number may be updated at a later date, here’s a look at those numbers broken down into the various seasons. In the Early Archery Season in

them during the regular season, featuring two running backs (Ryan Casella and Kaiser Kistner) both achieve 1,000-yard seasons and seeing Coach Chris Eiswerth become the school’s all-time winningest coach all produced memories they too will be talking about thirty years down the road. During South Williamsport’s final home game of the season, members of that 1993 team gathered for a reunion. At halftime, they were recognized on the playing field and gathered around Coach Zalonis, celebrating those memories from their high school years. Following the loss to Steel-High, senior lineman Owen Bird talked with the media about what had been accomplished. “Coach E raised us up on a standard that was Bragalone’s 2014 team that made it as far as we did. He showed us a lot of their film, trying to inspire us. And we eventually made it this far, and there was no one else left to look up to. We were the standard.” Perhaps Kistner, South’s newest member of the 1,000-yard rushing club, best put the season in its proper perspective. “You just have to play your heart out and however it comes out on the scoreboard, you just know that you did the best you can do.” Well said, young man. Jersey Shore, Canton, and Muncy know exactly what you are talking about. The members of their respective communities can certainly agree!

moment, exhibiting the community’s pride. It was a hard sell; the kids weren’t readily buying. I occupied an aisle seat, sitting next to one of the team leaders and fiercest competitors. The player refused to look out the window and sat with his head buried against his chest. I urged him to look out the window at the crowds that were cheering along the streets. Refusing, he replied. “Why are they doing this? We lost.” For any team that falls short of a state championship run, Jersey Shore, Canton, and Muncy, among them, losing the last football game of a season leaves a feeling only those who have experienced the same can truly understand. It’s never easy to lose a football game. But, sometimes, no matter how hard you try, the other team is just better. While the bus ride home from Shamokin following the loss to Steel-High probably felt similar for this year’s Mountaineers team, what they were able to achieve ranks right up there with that 1993 team and the 2014 team led by Dominick Bragalone that lost to Bishop Guilfoyle in a similar state final four game. When the sting of that loss finally dissipates, most will realize that Steel-High was the better team. That takes nothing away from what this 2023 team accomplished. An 11-3 record, a District IV Class A championship, achieving playoff victories over both Canton and Muncy, teams that had defeated

Sporting Matters With Spence…

My Gridiron Boys

Call 570-326-9322

O

ne of the joys of scribing is getting to know so many great kids involved with sports. We would get to know one another in high school, and then we would stay in touch. Sometimes, I will do a college or professional follow-up. Yes. It is always fun. There is an impressive list. This keeps me in the loop, and I marvel at their successes both on and off. I will occasionally send them a few well-dones. Many of these student-athletes get back to me right away with a thank you, Coach. This week, let’s focus on a few of my gridiron boys. Trey Potts is having a great year with the Nittany Lions. The Williamsport Area native is a versatile backup for Penn State. Potts has made his mark in his final collegiate season. He serves as a mentor to the talented sophomore backs. Treyson does his thing when his number is called. The Minnesota transfer has appeared in all 12 games. He has 23 carries for 151 yards and 2 TDS. Treyson caught four passes for 57 yards and another TD. My man also threw for a touchdown against Illinois. Treyson’s

parents are fantastic folks. I will do my best to say hello. Potts and I will chat some. What a great kid. I am hoping he gets a few more touches in the Peach Bowl. Big Kurt Danneker was a high school teammate with Potts. Kurt already graduated from Ohio U, and he is currently working on his Masters. Danneker has been a staple on the Bobcat offensive line the last few seasons. The 6’4 332-pounder has a great smile and one impressive beard. He is an animal. A two-year starter. An athletic big man who helps move those chains. The Bobcats are 9-3 and will play Georgia Southern in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Kurt and I exchange texts. Especially when he posts an incredible photo. This guy is a stud. I love his mountain-man appearance. OK. I had to explain who Jeremiah Johnson was. Danneker’s rents Dave and Sue are also outstanding people. Loyalsock’s Connor Watkins is having an incredible year. The Villanova Wildcat quarterback is putting up some impressive numbers. Connor leads the 10-2 Cats. He has thrown for 2,607 yards and 20 TDS. The dual-threat Watkins

also has 10 TDS on the ground. He is leading the FCS in many categories. Tecmo Super Bowl stats. Connor and the team are in South Dakota for a quarterfinal matchup with SDSU. The Jamie Spencer Rabbits are heavy favorites, but Villanova’s potent offense always gives them a chance. Watkins is another fantastic student. Great kid, and I enjoy our talks. This week, I told him my aunt and uncle will be in the stands. They are both South Dakota alums, but they said no to wearing a NOVA winter hat. His mom, Dayne, teaches with my spouse. My guy Ian Plankenhorn just earned some love. Plank became the first Lycoming College Warrior to ever earn three D3football.com All-Region honors. Ian was named to the 2023 third team as a kicker. The Montoursville native was also a third-team selection in 2022 and a second-teamer in 2021. The Warrior senior was also named firstteam All-Landmark Conference. Ian was solid the entire year. He finished the season 10-12, including a 45-yarder

in his final game. Plankenhorn has 28 career field goals, putting him third on Lycoming’s list. Laces out. Ian and I became friends when I wrote a story about him during his senior year. Now we are even closer as he also plays on my golf team. What an impressive young man. We talk weekly, and he is so good to my son. I look forward to spending some time with him and his fantastic family this spring. Great stuff, Ian. Congratulations on a stellar career. Laces out. Yes. Establishing these relationships is what it is all about. I have been extremely fortunate to watch these four and many others grow. It all starts with an interview — a story from this page. We stayed in touch, and now we are boys. Well done guys. Cheers.
