Iwant to begin with a serious safety and driving issue I only see getting worse. I will mention the specific routes I drive several times during the course of the day, but I have witnessed this problem across our area. As people are so quick to twist things in today’s world, I will make it clear that I’ve seen children, younger adults, and individuals from all walks of life putting themselves in harm’s way.

Particularly as I travel Sheridan and Northway Road near Saint Ann’s Church, across Lincoln to Sycamore Drive. As I drive on Little League Boulevard, the north portion of Market Street, and at different points throughout the city on Fourth Street, I encounter this alarming happening. I always give the individual or group seen the benefit of the doubt; it is by chance. The problem has recently worsened, and I hope it’s due to the warmer January weather we have been experiencing.

I’m sure many of you reading this already know where I’m going with this and have experienced it firsthand. Those that choose to dress in all black or darkcolored clothing. This includes jacket, hoodie, and or hat. Their choice of dress made most dangerous while they walk along the side of the road, and when I say

side, I’m being generous; or are crossing the street sometimes at a crosswalk but often where most unexpected. What makes this doubly dangerous is it’s often at night. Many of the children I witness should have adult supervision and never be near a street or highway unsupervised, day or night.

Again, if you’re reading this and want to take it the wrong way, let me make it clear, I could care less what color or type of clothes someone wears and definitely never want to discourage anyone from being out and about; my intention is to warn the driving public and maybe get a parent’s attention about a possible tragedy that can be avoided.

I also want to remind drivers to keep their heads up and avoid distractions; we all have our moments, whether it’s a cell phone, cup of coffee, or maybe children or pets within your vehicle. The bottom line is no one wants to experience the emotional burden of this situation when something bad happens, whether you’re traveling by foot or by vehicle.

A complete tragedy that has unfolded in front of all our eyes is the murder of the four Idaho University students.

I’ve watched news people talk about justice for the families and helping to bring them peace. I can’t even imagine

going through this as a parent. I don’t know how you could ever recover from this; it would always be with you, your family, and loved ones. What possible justice could ever bring peace?

As a parent, you have raised your child to get them to this point in their life where they’re out taking on the world on their own and then to have somebody take them away in such a brutal manner. How could you ever get the questions, thoughts, and what-ifs out of your head? There will always be that empty chair at the table.

The victims of the senseless evil act were University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves. As the prosecution of the cold-blooded killer begins, I think it’s most important to remember these are somebody’s children, siblings, and loved ones. They are the names and faces to remember. Again, I can’t even imagine and will not mention the evil individual’s name that will now be heard and viewed so often. There is not sufficient punishment here on God’s green Earth for what he did. In closing things out this week, there were definitely angels in the end zone for Buffalo Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin. The former University of Pittsburgh star

has made nothing short of a miraculous recovery that included 11 minutes of CPR to bring him back to life. Just nine days after suffering cardiac arrest versus the Bengals in Cincinnati, he left a Buffalo hospital room and returned home.

Damar received unbelievable onfield and medical care throughout this journey. It would be impossible for me to list the team of medical professionals that made this happen. One name I do want to mention, however, is Buffalo Bills’ assistant trainer Denny Kellington. A Syracuse University product, a quick shout-out to the Big East Conference, which seems to be inner-woven into Hamlin’s story in many ways.

Kellington has been mentioned by players, Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott and many of his fellow medical professionals as being a key factor in saving Damar’s life. I watched an interview with Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen in which he said, “God is good and what we witnessed was a miracle.” I will agree with that, along with the thought that most medical professionals apply today’s science for the good of humanity. And are truly angels walking amongst us. What I witnessed was the coming together of prayer, unity, preparation, and the best care possible. If any of these blessings would have been missing, so may be Damar.

God Bless America.

From the Editor…

Protect the Puppies!

It’s been a bit of a rough week and let me tell you why. My poor pupper, Bulleit, had to have surgery. He tore his Cruciate ligament and had to have it repaired. As of this writing, he’s four days post-op. He’s doing really well, but it has been a lot to deal with this week and his recovery will take around six weeks. Since this particular injury is fairly common in larger breeds, I thought I’d share some tips on how to prevent this injury in your own dogs, and some things I’ve learned in the last few days that may make it easier for you if you have to have the TPLO procedure done on your dog.

1. Keeping a balanced diet – Make sure that the food you give to your dog contains a good amount of protein for the growth and repair of their tissues. You should also make sure they get a suitable helping of healthy oils like Omega-3, which is commonly found in fish, as this helps with joint care and development.

2. Taking daily exercise – You need to ensure that your dog’s muscles remain strong and flexible so that their joints are properly supported. Bigger breeds tend to require more exercise than smaller ones.

3. Avoiding “weekend warrior syndrome” – If you don’t exercise your dog a great deal during the week, but then go for strenuous walks or runs over the weekend, you may just have “weekend warrior syndrome”. While this approach is well-intentioned, it

can sometimes do more harm than good.

4. Maintaining a healthy weight – Heavier dogs are most likely to suffer cruciate ligament injury, partly due to increased pressure on their joints when moving. To reduce the likelihood of your pet developing this kind of damage, it’s best to be careful what you feed them and to keep an eye on how much they eat.

5. Recognizing early signs – If you can catch a dog’s cruciate ligament injury early, it’s likely that a greater number of treatment options will be open to you. Success rates are also greater when vets can tend to a pet with joint injuries shortly after they occur. That’s why it’s vital to look out for the early signs of CCL damage. These include:

– Swelling of the affected joint

– An unwillingness to put weight on the affected joint

– Limping

– Holding up the affected rear limb

– Difficulty standing from a sitting or lying position

– Walking stiffly or unsteadily

– An apparent dislike of the joint being touched or handled

– Stiffness on rising

So, now that we know how to help prevent and what to look for, let’s talk about what

I’ve learned and how you can make things easier for you and your furbaby if they were to need this surgery.

First tip: make a med chart. Something simple in Word or Excel will work, but something to help you keep track of meds. Bulleit is currently on four different meds and a joint supplement. Some meds are three times per day, some are once, but making a chart, and checking off each time he gets his meds has been really helpful.

Second: find an alternative for the cone. Whether you use an inflatable e-collar, one the soft ‘UFO’ cones, or in our case, I ordered a sleeve for his leg to protect him from licking at the incision. The cones make him and I both sad, so I wanted to find something else ASAP.

Third: carpet and containment. We moved a large area rug into our kitchen and have a gate up to keep Bulleit in the kitchen. This gives him room to move around, but not too much. He also can’t jump up on anything, and the area rug gives him more solid footing than bare floors.

And finally, and don’t come for me on this one. Buy a muzzle. Just in case. You are going to have to do physical therapy on your dog and they aren’t going to enjoy it. Bulleit is the sweetest dog in the world, but he did get snappy with the vet about having his leg manipulated. So far *knock on wood*, I haven’t needed the muzzle for his exercises yet, but I have it on hand just in case. It’s better for them to spend a few minutes in a muzzle than for them to bite you simply because they don’t have a way to vocalize their pain.

South Williamsport Police to Re-Establish K9 Program

With the retirement of K9 Dany in 2018, the borough of South Williamsport is working on adding a new K9 partner to the patrol division. The addition of a K9 partner will do many things for the boroughs of South Williamsport and Duboistown, including performing public relations between the police and the community, providing appearances and demonstrations at various community functions, being a highly visible deterrent to criminal activity and tracking and apprehending criminals for arrest and prosecution. In addition, the new K9 unit will help to locate discarded drugs, firearms, and contraband, reduce the time needed to search buildings and locate illegal drugs and reduce the risk to uniformed officers on building searches where a barricaded individual may be hiding.

With the area’s growing drug problem, the South Williamsport Police Department took a step in helping to stop drug-related activity by forming the South Williamsport Interdiction Unit. The addition of a K9 partner is intended to further assist the Interdiction Unit and

its officers in intercepting drug-related contraband being brought into the area. When asked why it is important that the South Williamsport PD add a K9 unit, Officer Seth Stropp, who will be trained as handler, responded, “In March of 2020, the PA Supreme Court overturned a 2014 case, COMM V Gary, that case gave officers the ability to search a vehicle roadside under certain conditions. This ruling was then called the ‘motor vehicle exception.’ Under the motor vehicle exception, officers could search a vehicle due to its inherent mobility and the fact that dangerous narcotics and weapons could be lost and communities would suffer if these items were not found.” Officer Stropp went on to say that the odor or presence of narcotics or paraphernalia was necessary to execute the search. The new case, COMM V Alexander, now requires officers to only recover items in plain view or apply for a search warrant if probable cause exists to do so. This poses an issue for officers roadside as most illicit narcotics do not have an odor that officers can smell, and they can only now recover paraphernalia in plain view.

A K9 unit will assist the officers’ ability to locate narcotics that would otherwise go undetected. Without the K9 unit,

officers would be unable to develop the needed probable cause the courts require to execute the search on these vehicles to remove the narcotics from the streets and out of the hands of the community.

In addition, Route 15 is a nationally traveled roadway and is classified by the DEA as a “drug corridor.” We see travel from major cities bringing gang violence to the area. An apprehension K9 would assist with getting these violent individuals off the streets as well as provide a valuable asset to his human partner on the street. We have a responsibility to be proactive and not reactive to these dangerous and deadly drugs. As drug trends evolve, so must the ways we combat them,” said Officer Stropp.

Though its benefit is clear, reestablishing a K9 unit is expensive. “We are looking at approximately $19,500, which includes the purchase of the K9 Basic Handler Kit, which includes 6’ and 15’ leashes, harness, flat collar, choke collar, and dog food while in the academy. This does not include the expense of the 6-week training course and housing and an additional $2,000 to outfit a police cruiser.”

Officer Stropp will be attending High Drive K9 in Greenville, South Carolina. Both the officer/handler and K9 officer go through intensive training, and High Drive K9 was chosen specifically because it was designed for smaller class

sizes so that each team can receive the highest quality training. According to the company website, the course meets the standards and certifications set by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA). Each K9 team will learn proper handling skills, ensuring that they are prepared to deploy as a K9 team across the country. The K9 team will be provided with the following necessary skills: the ability to control their dog, the ability to locate, alert, and apprehend a suspect, the ability to demonstrate proper search and deployment tactics, and the ability to overcome obstacles. At the conclusion of the course, each team will be evaluated and certified by two High Drive K9 Evaluators.

If anyone is interested in helping the South Williamsport Police Department re-establish its K9 unit, donations of any size can be dropped off at the South Williamsport Police Department or mailed to their office at 331 W. Southern Ave., South Williamsport. Checks should be made payable to the “Borough of South Williamsport” and reference “K9 Program”. All donated funds will go to the continuing care and training of the K9 patrol dog. In addition, the SWPD has partnered with the Texas Roadhouse and is having a fundraiser every Monday through January and February, where 10% of the total bill will be donated to the K9 program if the SWPD Facebook flyer is presented during the meal.

Looking for Furever

At an auction, a citizen discovered little Landon. But, unfortunately, Landonʼs owners were selling the baby rabbit, breaking the citizenʼs heart. So she brought Landon to the SPCA. Now, at just nine months old, Landon is still young. White and soft as fresh snow, she is eager for a home of her own.

Rafiki has the best pink guinea pig lips, hands down. They are plump, meaty, soft, and perfect for giving a little smooch. You should see them flap when he eats romaine!

Rafiki was discovered at the same auction as Landon. He was brought to the SPCA and is now eager to find a family who will love him forever.

Dear Friends,

January 13, 2023

For over 127 years my family has dedicated their lives to the funeral service profession and serving the families of Montoursville and the surrounding communities. Over the years, I have strived to uphold the same level of quality and commitment to service as was established more than a century ago by my great-grandfather, J.U. Spitler. I am very thankful for the opportunity that has been afforded me.

Dear Friends,

For over 127 years my family has dedicated their lives to the funeral service profession and serving the families of Montoursville and the surrounding communities. Over the years, I have strived to uphold the same level of quality and commitment to service as was established more than a century ago by my great-grandfather, J.U. Spitler. I am very thankful for the opportunity that has been afforded me.

As the years have passed and I prepared for my retirement, the future of the funeral home has been a great concern. It was paramount that I found the right individual to carry on the tradition of values that has been established. Therefore, it gives me pleasure to announce, that effective January 13, 2023, Michael Hacker assumed ownership of the funeral home. Mike possesses the qualities that will ensure the continued caring and dedicated service my family and I have strived to provide.

Mike is not new to the funeral profession, as he has been a licensed funeral director for over 20 years. He also owns the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Homes in Hughesville and Dushore. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Mike is a native of Sullivan County and has resided in Hughesville for the past 18 years. Given our longtime personal and professional relationship, it has been a natural fit for him to assume the ownership of the funeral home.

Although the name of the funeral home will change to McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, the same level of professional and dedicated service, as-well-as many of the employees, will remain unchanged. Also, your prearrangement, as was originally established with the Spitler Funeral Home, will remain unaffected. In today’s uncertain financial times it’s reassuring to know your investment remains safe and secure.

County Well Represented Today at Inauguration of Eisenhower

Lycoming County was well represented today in Washington as the Republican Party took over the reins of government for the first time in 20 years.

From Congressman Alvin R. Bush to the

last GOP ward worker, the county people were thrilled as Dwight D. Eisenhower, soldier-educator-crusader, became President of the United States.

At least two chartered buses, private automobiles, trains, and planes took the local person to the nation’s capital begin-

ning last Saturday.

Here at home, thousands more read about the historic event in their newspapers, listened to it on the radio or watched it on television. For Republicans, it was “a great day” and for Democrats the end of an era.

The peaceful transfer of the Presidency from Harry S. Truman to Dwight Eisenhower — at the stroke of noon — and the inaugural parade this afternoon and the inaugural balls tonight — touched home.

Two prominent Williamsport vicinity residents shared in the inaugural events. They are Dr. Milton S. Eisenhower, brother of President Eisenhower, and president of the Pennsylvania State College (now Penn State University) and G. Mason

Owlett of Wellsboro.

Marching past the White House in the Inaugural Parade were city and area cadets at West Point, Annapolis, the Virginia Military Institute and Valley Forge Military Academy.

In addition, area servicemen stationed in the Washington area marched with their units.

A former local man, Bruce H. Houseknecht, bandmaster of the famed Joliet, Illinois High School Band, led his young musicians representing the State of Illinois.

Meanwhile, a number of local residents who supported Eisenhower during his campaign have received letters of thanks from him for their aid.

Top Tips to Get Ready to Run

You’ve made the decision to get in shape, and whether your goal is a full marathon or simply a few laps around the neighborhood, there are a few steps to consider taking before you strap on those shoes and head toward the finish line.

Here are a few tips to help get you ready for the big race:

Seek Quality Sneakers - Feet come in a variety of widths and sizes, so visit a specialty running store to find perfect-fitting sneakers. These may come with a hefty price tag, but there are no shortcuts for comfort and support while running long distances.

Make a Schedule - Try to aim for at least 10 hours of training per week, including three days where you run and two or three days of other physical activity such as cycling or strength training. To avoid exhaustion, be sure to include at least 1-2 “rest” days per week.

Stick with Water - Avoid sports drinks that are loaded with preservatives and sugars. You can’t go wrong with the

hydrating power of water. As a rule, try to consume at least 6-8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes you run. Proper hydration after the run is also vital.

Go Online - Many websites have training guides for various skill levels or different types of races. If you have a smartphone, look for apps that can take you through day-by-day workouts to get you marathon-ready.

Nutrition - Filling your body with the proper amount of fuel can help ensure finish-line success. Load up on quality carbohydrates, such as beans, peas, whole-wheat pastas, wholegrain cereals, apples, brown rice and root vegetables. Protein also plays an important role in a runner’s nutrition, so fill up on lean meats, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, peanut butter and soy protein sources, as well.

By following these general rules, you’ll be able to focus on achieving your goal and enjoy the thrill of finishing the race. (Family Features & eLivingToday.com, Photo courtesy of Getty Images)

County Hall Corner: Lights, Camera, Action?!

When the Lycoming County Commissioners brought up the subject of live-streaming their meetings a few years ago, I had to smile. It was hard enough for me to sit through those work sessions and regular meetings week after week; I could not imagine following them virtually from a single static camera.

But, and not for the first time, I was wrong. In fact, I have recommended to a number of people to go on YouTube and check out a certain discussion that I thought would answer their questions or inform them of an important issue. However, I always try to give them the time of the spot in the video that would interest them. It is sort of like panning for gold. It does not help to say there is gold in the creek — you need to know where in the creek the gold is!

I have a ‘reserved’ seat in the back of the room where the meetings are held along with Sun-Gazette reporter Pat Crossley. Pat is an outstanding Sun-Gazette reporter who writes an account of the meeting in the following day’s paper. She has been covering these meetings for several years now, and before her was Mike Re-

uther (a crack reporter but also someone who could crack me up with his jokes), and before Mike was — y’know, I can’t remember because they moved on. But these folks do help me keep my sanity because right before the meeting, we discuss the agenda and try to figure out how much Tylenol we will need to get through the session.

And, of course, we are always wrong. These commissioner meetings hardly ever turn out the way we think they will. We look at an agenda item and agree, “Oh, that will be a hot potato.” It comes up, and after thirty seconds of discussion, it is passed unanimously. No story there. The opposite is more the norm. A simple procedural matter that usually is passed instantly, for some reason out of

COUNTY HALL

nowhere, gets bogged down as each of the three commissioners has a different take on the subject.

Slowly but surely, though, the business of the county is taken care of, and toward the end of the meeting, the real drama begins — the comments section. It begins with “Commissioner Comments.” This is where they may talk about anything and everything, although to their credit, they rarely get into national political matters. It is not that they don’t care, that is for sure; rather, it is because there is not much of anything they can do about what goes on in Washington, D.C.

Although occasionally Commissioners Metzger and Mussare will lambast Harrisburg (especially during COVID), by and large, the focus is on matters in or around our region of the Commonwealth. The three often will attempt to explain why they have taken a particular action or policy, such as they recently have done with the use of the ARPA Funds.

For me, at least, this is the best part of the meeting, largely because this is what all three of them do best. I would love to tag Commissioners Metzger, Mussare, and Mirabito as the ‘Three M-Egos’ because it is so catchy, but it also would be grossly unfair. All three of these men are honestly passionate about making Lycoming County a better place to live for all of us. It is very hard to get elected as a Lycoming

County Commissioner, evidenced by the ten candidates for the position in the last election. The campaign process requires a lot of face-to-face contact with the constituents. In past elections, I have seen candidates that had great credentials, but the public sensed something was missing. These three made the connection and have tried hard to live up to it.

The County Commissioners’ weekly meeting concludes with “Public Comments.” The majority of the time, it is the same retired folks who come up to the podium and bring up their current heartburn. Sometimes there are surprises, such as what happened at the meeting on Thursday, January 5th. One man got up and commented how pleased he was about the 2020 recount vote and how nine out of ten people he talked to agreed that it was a good idea and worth the cost to conduct this recount. Immediately after him was another man who stood behind the podium and took exactly the opposite view; he thought the recount was a total waste of time and money, and everyone he talked to agreed with him.

The three commissioners listened patiently, and when the gentleman had finished, Commissioner Metzger thanked both of them for their comments, and with that, the meeting was adjourned. Hope you enjoyed the show — that’s all, folks!

Seedling Sale Underway

While it might be winter, landowners can begin making plans to help wildlife this spring — and beyond — by planting tree and shrub seedlings offered by the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Howard Nursery.

The 2023 seedling order form is available online, and sales are underway.

The Howard Nursery grows tree and shrub seedlings for use on state game lands, by participating Hunter Access cooperators, in the Seedlings for Schools program and by the Game Commission’s conservation partners.

Any remaining surplus is available to Pennsylvania residents to purchase for wildlife food and cover, watershed protection, soil-erosion control, and for reclamation of disturbed areas, such as surface mine sites and utility rights-ofway.

The selection of seedlings changes from year to year due to available seed, seedling germination, and growing conditions.

“It takes three years to grow conifers and sometimes two years to grow hardwood trees from seed,” explained Brian Stone, manager at Howard Nursery. “Our surplus of conifers and oaks is up even more from last year; and this year we have a very limited supply of persimmon, domestic apple and wild plum.”

Seedlings are sold in units of 25. The 2023 order form contains a selection of evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs, most of which are native to Pennsylvania and collected from Pennsylvania sources. The order form lists seedling descriptions, site preferences and benefits.

Some of the more popular species available this year are white pine, Norway spruce, white cedar, red oak, sawtooth oak, black walnut and crabapple.

All seedlings offered for sale can be purchased at a discounted price. Orders of 12 or more total units (300 seedlings) qualify for applicable discounted pricing. With the discount, prices are as low as $11.25 per unit. Regular price ranges from $12.50 to $16.25 depending upon the seedling species.

Those who are interested in placing an order should call the Howard Nursery at 814-355-4434. Orders can also be placed by fax at 814-355-8094. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The nursery is closed on federal holidays.

The order form and information about the seedlings for sale is available at www. pgc.pa.gov. Place your cursor over “Information & Resources” in the menu bar at the top of the homepage, then click on “Make a Purchase” to find the 2023 Seedling Order Form.

For heaven’s sake, it’s January, and most of these days so far have felt like spring.

I wore a t-shirt outside last Saturday and hung out our sheets on the line. It was wild for this time of year. Usually, I have a heartfelt goodbye to my clothesline about mid to end of October!

This is unheard of for January. Where’s the snow!? It is so darn depressing looking out to see everything so bare, muddy, and gloomy. Why can’t it be white? I expect this kind of weather in spring but not in January in Pennsylvania. Complain all you want about snow, but when you choose to live in

Pennsylvania, it’s pretty much inevitable. I don’t want rain in the winter. I want all the snow! I miss the good old days of snow days. The days when kids actually had off school and played in the snow. Days when my brother and I would go out and play with the neighbor kids and come back inside for Mom’s hot famous Swiss Miss hot cocoa with fluff. The days when the snow was so deep that I could hardly walk through it. Building snowmen, making snow angels, having snowball fights, and hanging out in our very own igloo that Dad built us right in our front yard. Those were the good old no-school snow days. Days when we were outside so

long that my fingers were numb, and I would sucker my little brother into helping me pull my boots off. Yup, those were the days. You know what?

I honestly, I still think I could sweet-talk my brother into doing that for me. Haha! No joke.

That ole Luke Perry, he is a real good guy.

I am giggling right now because I say that; it reminds me of back when we moved to our house on Grimesville Road. It had a huge yard compared to the home we grew up at on Roosevelt Ave., and we had a nice big yard we could sled ride down. When we moved

there, I was fourteen, and he was ten. Our first winter there was so much fun. But Luke will tell you that after I started getting serious dating Chris after so long, our sled-riding days ended. He said that Chris ruined all our fun. Once I had a boyfriend, “so he says,” that I didn’t have time to sled ride with him after that. He will never let us live that down!

My gram, Lois Liddick, had some of the best sled riding parties. She and Pap, Floyd Liddick, had the best hill to sled ride down. At a young age, my gram had us walking up that hill and feeling the thrill of sled riding. It was fun seeing how many of us could pile into one sled and even have sled ride races. Those of you who know my grandmother know what a special lady she is and how special she

made everything. EVERY holiday/birthday was a big deal. (I take after her so much in this area.) Whether it was Valentine’s Day, the 4th of July, Halloween, or Christmas, Gram made everything special for her grandbabies. All of my cousins talk about this often and how we miss Gram’s bowling, Valentine’s parties, or her taking us to see the fireworks on the 4th of July. Grams pumpkin parties were a blast, and sled riding parties were so memorable. We always went inside after a cold day of sled riding for hot cocoa and snacks, then would all want to sleep over so we could do it all again the next day! Sometimes if we were there before lunch, she would make us all grilled cheese. Gram let nothing get in her way when it came to family. Her husband, kids, and grandkids always came first, and if she were a friend of yours, she would be there for you no matter what!

I’m so grateful for all these wonderful winters I’ve endured over the years. I’m just like my gram and truly love snow’s magic and beauty, and I still love snow days! Don’t ever feel too old to go out and catch a snowflake on your tongue, make a snow angel, or even sled ride. Just be careful; our bones get more fragile in our older ages! Haha! Smaller hills are just more our speed now. Running and jumping onto the sled headfirst these days are definitely harder. One, I can’t run as fast. Two, boobs cause an issue in that area.

But hey, squat and plop on that baby and push yourself off, or just get pulled on the back of a four-wheeler. Whatever works! Don’t like your chocolate hot? Try it as this

dip. I made this for one of my Christmas parties, and my guest went nuts over it. I served it with vanilla wafer cookies. Enjoy!

Hot Cocoa Dip

Ingredients:

• 4 (.73 oz) envelopes hot cocoa mix without marshmallows

•1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, room temperature

•6 oz. cool whip, thawed

•2 -3 T. vanilla mallow bits

Directions:

In a medium mixing bowl, add in the hot cocoa mix and cream cheese. Mix on medium with a hand mixer until thoroughly incorporated. I beat it until it was super creamy.

Then, add in the cool whip and continue to beat until combined.

Scoop into a serving bowl and top with vanilla mallow bits. Serve with cookies. Store in the refrigerator.

Winter Trends

The weather so far in 2023 has been odd. It hasn’t been bitterly cold, we’ve had some uncharacteristic warm bouts, but it’s definitely been dreary with lots of precipitation. I’m still advocating for human hibernation from January 2nd to March 16th; it’s not going great. In order to prepare for whatever winter has in store, whether you enjoy the weather or are just trying to get through it, you may want to consider adding some of the following seasonal trends to your outfit roster.

that will elevate any casual outfit this season.

First up, a long wool overcoat for the occasional mild day. Think highs in the 40s, lows above freezing, and on the dry side. This kind of coat can have a blanket-like effect for some unexpected coziness and looks great with both jeans and boots or with a low heel, tights, and a dress. Plus, there’s nothing chicer than a long wool coat, which you can throw over just about anything to create an outfit. Even leggings, snow boots, and a sweater feel a bit more polished with a longer dress coat. Mango.com has some tailored wool coats on sale now

Another key piece of outerwear for winter is boots. This season, black knee-high boots appear to be on trend (again). Really this boot style never goes away; just some years, it’s more prevalent than others. Like a wool overcoat, black knee-high boots are chic as well as being versatile, working with practically every outfit. For evenings, wear them with tights and a skirt. For day, with leggings and a knit dress. However, this footwear isn’t just for dresses and skirts. With wider-leg trousers, knee-high boots can be worn underneath, providing an extra layer of coverage for warmth. With skinny and straight-leg pants and jeans, boots can go over them again, acting as another layer against the cold. DSW has hundreds of options for black knee-high boots. But what it really comes down to is heel height. For my money, I’d go with a treaded flat sole or block heel. With winter, you don’t want to be teetering around in a stiletto or platform-heeled boot, no matter how

Tai Chi

Are you looking for exercise that is slow and gentle? That doesn’t leave you breathless?

That will increase muscle strength, flexibility, balance, aerobic conditioning, and improve symptoms of arthritis?

Try Tai Chi!

Tai chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but it might as well be called “medication in motion.”

The 45 minute session has you flow through low-impact movements and slow-motion exercise.

OUTFITS

fabulous they may look.

Another practical trend to try on this winter are loose jeans. During much of the 2010s, skinny jeans were everywhere. Over the past few years, denim silhouettes have gotten more forgiving. And a forgiving jean may just be what you need most after a holiday season full of treats. Loose, wide-leg jeans can be part of your daily uniform here this winter. Style them with boots or sneakers and a chunky sweater. I also love the idea of pairing relaxed jeans with a blazer and button-down. The Gap and Levi’s are my denim goto’s. Gap has a jean silhouette they are calling “90s Loose” in both mid and high-rises. Levi’s has flared and bootcut options for a bit more shape.

As suggested above, black, kneehigh boots pair well with knit dresses, which also happen to be a winter trend this year! Knit or sweater dresses are not just a trend this season but also a winter staple. They come in a variety of silhouettes in thick and thicker knits. You can pair them with heavy socks and sneakers or heels and a blazer. There are cardigan sweater dresses for different layering options, as well as turtleneck knits for extra coverage. I’m liking the offerings at Target. They

have maxi sweater dresses, along with oversized and flit n’ flare frocks in sleek knits. On especially frigid days, double down and layer a cardigan over a sweater dress and fleece-lined leggings. With a coat, boots, jeans, and knits, you’ll be set to face the winter ahead. However, one cannot live on practicality alone. To indulge your style a bit here this season, consider throwing in some velvet pieces for the cold nights ahead. Velvet during the winter is not only warm, but it also adds a festive touch to your outfit, both for day and especially evening. A wideleg velvet pant or miniskirt pairs well with a turtleneck, while a black velvet dress is timeless for nights out. So many velvet pieces are on markdown now in the new year. Nordstrom has a ton of velvet frocks on sale. Boden has a whole collection, “The Velvet Edit,” discounted up to 60%.

What excites me about these trends is that they can all be worn interchangeably, are practical to the season, and are functional for everyday life. True, you won’t be sporting velvet tops Monday through Friday, but having a fun fancy piece thrown in the mix is one way to help you survive the season.

“Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six” by Lisa Unger c.2022, Park Row Books $27.99 400 pages

Someone is peeking on you. You don’t know where they are. You haven’t caught them yet, but you can feel them: the hairs on the back of your neck are standing at attention. You’re trying to resist the urge to jump, scream, and run away but nowhere is safe. Someone is watching you and, as in the new book “Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six” by Lisa Unger, they’re right outside your door.

He’d promised it would be fun.

Hannah’s brother, Mako, was one of those generous guys who never accepted “no” so when he paid for an entire long weekend at a cabin in the woods in Georgia — food, drink, cabin, and all — she knew that neither she nor her husband, Bruce, or Hannah’s best friend, Cricket, would ever get out of going. Everybody shrugged. That was Mako. Were it left up to Hannah, she’d never leave her house. She and Bruce were parents to a toddler that was the light of their life. Then again, getting away occasionally was good, right?

The first indication that this was a really

bad idea was that everyone lost cell phone reception on the way to the cabin; to say that it was remote was an understatement. To say that it was a “cabin” was a bit of a stretch, too: the place was more like a mansion and the staff was super-creepy.

local expertise

Hannah could have handled that — always a can-do kind of person, she was the calm in a storm (and there was a storm coming!) — but this retreat really put her on edge. Back when they were teenagers, Mako dated Cricket

and she was flirting with him in the hot tub, in front of everyone. Bruce seemed preoccupied with work, and the Wi-Fi was iffy. So was the electricity, just after Cricket’s boyfriend took Mako’s car and disappeared to who-knows-where.

As the storm raged around them, Hannah felt absolutely sure that everything about this whole weekend was wrong: her housemates, the setting. Everything, including the fact that they were not alone...

As thrillers go, “Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six” is pretty OK. Not great, but nowhere near bad. Pretty OK, with a few disappointments, one of which is that eagle-eyed readers will have the ending figured out long before the middle of the

story.

And yet, that’s pretty OK because author Lisa Unger offers a few twists getting to the end, a few novelistic (but quick) sex scenes, and a surprise or two up her sleeve that could keep thriller fans around, even if it’s only to see the worst characters get their best comeuppances. On that, there’s much to dislike about some of the people in this novel and more than a mere shade of schadenfraude to be had.

This is probably not a story that will thrill heavy-duty thriller fans; it’s really too tame for that. But if you’re in need of something that won’t tax your overworked brain at this busiest time of year, “Secluded Cabins Sleeps Six” is worth a peek.

Brushing and flossing your teeth may save you extra sessions in the dentist’s chair each year, but the benefits of dental hygiene do not end with pearly whites. In fact, there’s a direct correlation between oral hygiene and overall health.

Oral health offers clues about overall health, advises the Mayo Clinic. When a dentist or hygienist checks a person’s mouth, he or she is getting a window into that person’s overall wellness — including if something is amiss.

Dental hygiene matters because, without proper brushing and flossing, bacteria

in the mouth can grow unchecked. Over time, that bacteria can infiltrate and break down the soft tissues in the gums and teeth, eventually leading to decay and gum disease. Greenwood Dental Care in Illinois states that the bacteria from the mouth could travel into the bloodstream and elsewhere, causing a host of issues.

There’s a high correlation between an unhealthy mouth and systemic diseases. The United Kingdom-based dental group Fulham Road Dental indicates that gum disease is linked to heart problems, kidney diseases and certain types of cancer. Dentists

notice problems in their patients’ mouths may be able to predict potential illnesses elsewhere in the body, advising those patients to seek consultations with other healthcare providers.

Here’s a deeper look at some of the correlations between oral health and overall health, courtesy of the Mayo Clinic.

Endocarditis: When bacteria or other germs from the mouth or another part of the body spread through the bloodstream, they can attach to certain areas of the heart. This causes an infection in the inner lining of the heart chambers or valves.

Pregnancy and birth complications: Periodontitis has been linked to low birth weight and premature birth.

Cardiovascular disease: While it’s not

fully understood why, clogged arteries, stroke and heart disease may be linked to inflammation and infection caused by oral bacteria.

Pneumonia: Bacteria in the mouth may be pulled into the lungs, where it can lead to respiratory illness, such as pneumonia.

It’s a two-way street with health and the mouth. Certain diseases can lead to issues in the mouth. HIV/AIDS may cause mucosal lesions in the mouth; those with osteoporosis may have weakened periodontal bone and tooth loss; and research has shown that diabetes puts gum health at risk.

Individuals should make oral health a priority, as it has a significant effect on their overall health and well-being.

UPMC Expert: Understanding the Thyroid Gland

There are many reasons a person may experience fatigue or a general lack of energy and typically the cause is multifactorial. One possible cause to consider is the activity of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and is responsible for the rate of multiple processes in the body. Many symptoms of abnormal thyroid function are nonspecific, and, therefore, it is important to talk with a health care provider to determine if a simple blood test is necessary to see if your thyroid may be contributing to your symptoms.

Too Much or Too Little

Your thyroid gland can cause problems when it produces too much thyroid hormone, called hyperthyroidism, or too little thyroid hormone, which is known as hypothyroidism. Both conditions, when left untreated, can have a negative impact on your body systems, which can lead to many symptoms including fatigue or tiredness.

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can cause the body systems to slow down and, as a result, you may experience symptoms such as:

– Increase in dry skin

– Feeling colder

– Becoming tired more easily

– Constipation

– Brain fog

When left untreated, hypothyroidism can weaken or slow your heart, which can make you feel tired or out of breath, especially when you exercise. It can also contribute to weight gain due to fluid retention that can occur, in addition to; joint pain, high blood pressure, swelling in your ankles, and higher cholesterol levels which can increase your risk for heart problems.

In contrast, those with hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, have body processes that are sped up. This increase may lead to symptoms including:

– Increase in anxiety or irritability

– Weakness in the arms and thighs that makes it difficult to lift heavy things or climb stairs

– Trembling or excessive shaking

– Sweating and difficulty with hot weather

Frequent bowel movements

Hyperthyroidism, when left untreated, can also contribute to weight loss, despite normal eating patterns, loss of bone density, and loss of muscle mass. It can also lead to irregular heart rhythms, so it is important to let your healthcare provider know if you are experiencing the above symptoms.

Treating Thyroid Conditions

Fortunately, abnormal thyroid hormone levels can be easily diagnosed, and effective treatment options are available.

If you have hypothyroidism, your provider will treat you with a daily thyroid hormone pill to supplement the underactivity of the thyroid gland. After about six weeks of treatment, your will have a blood test again to make sure the thyroid hormone levels are returning to an appropriate level. There are several different formulations of thyroid hormone replacement, and it is important to stick to the one your provider prescribes, in order to decrease the fluctuations of your thyroid hormone levels.

With a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism, there are typically three options for treatment. The most common treatment is to prescribe anti-thyroid medications to control the thyroid

levels. A second treatment option is radioactive iodine, given in the form of a pill, which destroys the thyroid gland to reduce the amount of thyroid hormone that it is producing. The third option, which is not as commonly chosen, is to surgically remove the thyroid. If you were to have the radioactive iodine treatment or the surgical option, you might need to take thyroid hormone pills, just as those with hypothyroidism do, to maintain a healthy level of the thyroid hormone in your blood.

Many of the symptoms of thyroid disease look like symptoms of other common conditions and, therefore, it is difficult to determine if your thyroid function is contributing to your symptoms. Therefore, if you feel that you are having any of the above symptoms, it is important to discuss this with your healthcare provider. At that point, they can evaluate the situation, order blood work, and if needed refer you to a specialist.

So far, this winter has been a fairly mild one, but of course, that can change. Winters in the past were not always this mild. The chill and cold would often freeze solid waterways area. This development was turned into an advantage with the harvesting of ice that resulted from these extreme freezes.

Today we take for granted going to get some cold food or beverage from the refrigerator; there was a time, however, when that refrigerator was literally an “ice box”

that kept items cold by using ice that was harvested from area streams the previous winter.

This ice was also stored and used by mortuaries, creameries, hospitals, hotels, general stores, and food service establishments.

Usually, this time of year in the “good old days,” the Susquehanna River and area waterways such as Lycoming, Pine, Muncy, Larry’s, and Loyalsock creeks would be teeming with men clothed in heavy woolen jackets, bulky gloves, fur hats, carrying large saws and axes to cut ice from the frozen streams.

According to a Grit article from January 1980, the ice harvesting process was “not for weaklings.” It involved harvested ice blocks that were bulky and of considerable weight, and it was ideally done in harshly cold weather conditions in which “the snow glittered and was like snow underfoot when the ice could be lifted from the surface of the water with dripping water that would freeze instantly when the ice was smooth and dark, swept bare of snow and 12 or more inches thick, the weather was perfect for cutting ice.”

This work could also be dangerous as well. Ice harvesters could slip and fall into the freezing water or suffer injuries while using the tools of their trade. The possibility of contracting a serious respiratory disease

such as pneumonia was also ever-present and, in a time before the availability of antibiotics to treat such maladies, could also be fatal.

In the days before motorized transport became common, horses drawn plows would be used in the process. Men using these would mark off the length and breadth of the surface of the ice-clogged waterways and mark it out for the chopping of blocks of ice of various sizes.

After being marked out, a hole was chopped in the ice, and big-toothed cross-cut saws were lowered into the water, and workers began sawing out blocks of ice by hand; this would produce floating blocks of ice.

Men with long spiked poles then pushed these blocks, the blocks were then picked

up with big ice tongs, loaded onto a horsedrawn wagon or sled, and hauled to the many ice houses.

According to the Grit article, the ice houses were long, barn-like structures that had double thick walls. Sawdust was put between the walls, and ice was on top of the ice for insulation to keep it cold.

Prompt storage of ice often made it possible for the ice to last through the summer and well into the fall.

To supplement the supply, several commercial businesses made artificial ice. According to a March 1954 Grit article, two of the leading ones in the area were the John Peters and Sons, 1320 East Third Street, and Stewart Artificial Ice Company, 739 First Street. Peters and Sons had 3,000 tons

of ice in storage and supplied the needs of the local branch of the New York Central Railroad. The Stewart Company supplied ice to the local branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

A check of the 1924 Boyd’s Williamsport City Directory showed a dozen businesses in Williamsport selling and storing ice, such as A.J. Bower, 923 W. Front St., Flock Brewing Company, 601 Franklin St., J.E. Kriner, 212 Maynard St., L. Tilburg, 40 Fifth St., G.T. Wagner, 330 E. First Ave., South Williamsport, and R. Rodgers, 1429 Race St., just to name a few.

Ice was a big wintertime industry that had to help consumers through the rest of the seasons and was an important part of the winter scene here in the years gone by.

Tips for Choosing a Family Pet

here are many reasons to welcome a pet into a household. Companionship, unconditional love and protection are some of the reasons people get pets. Parents also may want children to have pets so they develop a sense of caring and responsibility.

When shopping for a new pet, the right fit can make all the difference. Before bringing any animal into a household, it is important to ask a few pointed questions and conduct an honest assessment of various factors that can affect the animal’s well-being.

Assess budget first. Pets require different financial commitments. For example, a beta fish in a small tank will cost considerably less than a pet dog or a horse kept at a stable. Adults must consider what they can afford when it comes to pets, as each animal comes with a separate initial price tag and subsequent food and care costs.

Think about allergies. Dander,

hair and feathers can trigger allergic reactions in children and adults, so certain pets may need to be avoided. Speak with a pediatrician or a veterinarian and ask for suggestions on which pets may work best.

Consider a child’s developmental stage. Children younger than age five or six may not be mature enough to view the pet as something other than a toy or plaything. Before committing to a pet, particularly one that will serve as a child’s companion, be honest about the child’s maturity level. Some pets may have easygoing temperaments, like family-friendly dog breeds, including beagles and retrievers. A parrot with a strong nipping instinct or a skittish cat may not be the best fit until children are older.

Look at family lifestyle. Families that go on frequent vacations or are involved in many after-work or extracurricular school activities may not have enough time to devote to pets that thrive on interaction. Rather, a pet that is comfortable in a

habitat or cage or one that is mostly self-sufficient might be a better fit. Research, research, research.

Before making a commitment, families should conduct significant research on the pets they are considering. This way there will be fewer surprises. Look at information regarding pet/ breed temperament, genetic illness predisposition, exercise requirements, veterinary checkup schedules, and immunizations, among other factors.

These recommendations can help families find pets that will thrive in their homes.

Uptown Music Collective Set for One-Night Only Country Tribute

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Uptown Music Collective and UPMC will present Friends in Low Places: The Music of Garth Brooks & The Women of ‘90s Country at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport. The performance will feature the music of country music icon Garth Brooks, alongside the ground-breaking music of female country artists like Shania Twain, Dolly Parton, The Chicks (formally the Dixie Chicks), Faith Hill and more. All music will be performed by the hard-working and talented students of the UMC’s Special Performance Group 1. This performance is additionally sponsored, in part, through partnerships with Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital and Hudock Capital Group.

“This is our ‘people’s choice’ performance, which has become an annual fundraising event for the Collective,” said Jared Mondell, assistant executive director of the Uptown Music Collective. “This year, a country/Garth Brooks tribute was the community’s top choice after several rounds of voting in the Collective’s 2022 People’s Choice online voting event, winning out by a narrow margin over a virtual who’s who list of modern and classic rock or pop performers. Our students are extremely excited to bring this music to life on the CAC stage while raising money

for the school’s scholarship and financial aid funds.”

In the 1980s, country music was in decline. Although it continued to be popular in some areas of the country, it seemed like it was on its way out on a national level – that is until a new country sound emerged in the 1990s on FM Radio that brought country music back to the mainstream. This new brand of country music that mixed elements of contemporary pop music with the familiar country twang immediately had a big impact on the music business. Suddenly, artists like Garth Brooks were scoring hit songs one after another, filling stadiums and putting on shows that rivaled the production of large rock concerts.

In Friends in Low Places, the Collective’s students will pay tribute to these artists and the music that made them famous.

Attendees will enjoy Garth Brooks songs like Rodeo, American Honky-Tonk Bar As-

sociation, Ain’t Going Down (‘Til the Sun Comes Up), The Dance, and more, alongside hits like You’re Still the One, Fancy, This Kiss, and Strawberry Wine by female country artists from the same time period.

“This is a concert that is way overdue, and the students and I plan to make up for it by making this the best country music performance we’ve brought to the stage yet,” said Dave Brumbaugh, executive director and founder of the Uptown Music Collective. “The students have been tuning up their telecasters, pulling out the pedal steel guitar, putting on their boots and hats, and getting excited to bring this great music to the stage for everyone.”

Friends in Low Places will feature Collective students who have been diligently preparing for this event for more than three months. Along with the music, there will be a professional-grade light, sound, and video show, organized by the students, themselves, who will work alongside the professionals at the CAC. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers, but also the directors of the show. A group of younger students, or “Tech Monkeys,” will serve as stage technicians and spotlight operators. The cast for the show is drawn from the Uptown Music Collective’s much-heralded “Special Performance Group 1.”

This show is directed by Uptown Music Collective senior students Leah Batman (Laurel Springs School), Calistra Ma-

honey (Pennsylvania College of Technology), and Issac Fluery (Canton High School). The show’s leadership committee consists of UMC students Matthew Bellino (Danville Area High School), Izzy Butters (Loyalsock Township High School), Abby Colone (Loyalsock Township High School), Chase Cowden (Loyalsock Township High School), Connor Evans (Williamsport Area High School), Ben Feuerstein (Lewisburg Area High School), Gabreon Godin (Williamsport Area High School), Grace Godin (Williamsport Area Middle School), Brendan Kuriga (South Williamsport Area High School), Duncan Larson (Loyalsock Township High School), Jossian Lilley (Loyalsock Township High School), Cassidy Lutz (Loyalsock Township High School), Stephanie Nappi (PA Cyber), and Luke O’Brien (Loyalsock Township High School).

“Country had never been a genre that grabbed my attention in any way,” Lutz said. “I could only name a handful of songs and they were never anything I was a huge fan of. Now that we have been rehearsing the Garth songs and the ‘90s female country hits, I have gained a new appreciation for the music I never had! All of the songs seem simple but have their own unique intricacies that make them all lovable. This show will be a blast and a great experience to be had for country fans and newcomers to the genre, like myself. I hope to see a full house for this epic, one-night performance!”

Additional partners and sponsors for this performance include Chartwell Hotels, KFC of Williamsport, Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, The Kiessling Group of Janney Montgomery Scott, UPMC Health Plan, Lycoming College, Woodlands Bank, Williamsport Sun-Gazette, FASTSIGNS of Williamsport, Pennsylvania College of Technology, The Brickyard Restaurant and Ale House, The Stonehouse Wood Fired Pizza and Pasteria, The Hartman Group, Java Momma, Inc., and Beiter’s Furniture, Mattress and Appliance. Media sponsors include Backyard Broadcasting, Lamar Advertising, 92.1 WSQV, NorthCentralPa.com, The Graphic Hive and Engage Media.

Tickets for the performance, which are

$20 in advance and $25 at the door (plus fees), are available through the Community Arts Center box office, 220 West Fourth St., and website, www.caclive.com. In addition to this show, tickets for the remainder of the Collective’s performance season are on sale now at the CAC, as well. Upcoming shows include Free Bird: A Tribute to Southern Rock on March 10 and 11, and The Show Must Go On: The Music of Queen on April 28 and 29.

Lumber Capital Athletics Working to Get Williamsport Fit

Lumber Capital Athletics, home of CrossFit Lumber Capital, is an open-concept, functional training facility located at 575 East Third St. in Williamsport. The facility opened in October 2022 and is owned by Ben Wise and Stacey Kadenas. They offer group CrossFit classes, individualized programming, personal training, and performance

programs for athletes ranging from middle & high school to college age.

Wise and Kadenas got into the fitness field through slightly different paths. While competing as a collegiate wrestler, Ben Wise earned his degree in Health and Physical Education. During his time wrestling for Messiah College, however, it became clear that he loved training even more than competing. After graduating, Wise needed a

competitive outlet which ultimately led him to the sport of CrossFit. For him, it was the best of both worlds as it combined competition and training. While working as a Health and Physical Education teacher, Ben began competitive CrossFit and coaching at an affiliate. Eventually, he left teaching to pursue CrossFit coaching full-time. In 2018 he founded ZOAR Fitness and began remote coaching

CrossFit athletes. Now he coaches athletes from around the world at all levels.

Kadenas is a Williamsport native and has a passion for health and fitness that has transformed over the years from hours and miles of running on roads to training competitively in the sport of CrossFit under ZOAR Fitness. Shortly after discovering CrossFit, she joined a local affiliate, and within a few months, she knew that this was where she wanted her career in the fitness world to be. Stacey received her CrossFit L1 certification and then shortly after opened and owned her own affiliate in 2013, continuing down that path for

the next seven years.

While working closely with members each day, Stacey realized that the missing piece for many people was nutrition. Properly fueling the body and coaching nutrition became her next step. Not long after, Kadenas received nutrition coaching certifications which enabled her members to fully realize their fitness goals both inside and outside of the gym. In 2020 Stacey expanded her nutrition services by offering a meal prep service. Macros from Ma were formed, preparing and delivering meals to clients, complete with a well-balanced macro-nutrient breakdown.

In 2022, Wise and Kadenas founded Lumber Capital Athletics with the goal of providing a premier coaching experience for athletes of all ability levels. Programming for CrossFit Lumber Capital and running the Coaches Education Program have been some of their greatest joys. “I love working with athletes who want to take their fitness to the next level because that’s what I help people do,” said Wise. Kadenas is equally committed and passionate about helping people achieve overall health and wellness goals through fitness combined with proper nutrition.

When asked why they wanted to open a facility, Wise responded, “Before 2022,

I had a very healthy hesitation to open a gym…it’s a ton of work. But when you see a hole in the market, you have to jump on it, and thankfully I have a great partner to share the workload with, and our strengths complement each other.”

Opening a new business is difficult in a good economy but opening right before a global pandemic made the process exponentially more difficult. Still, Wise and Kadenas were able to make it work. “Thankfully, Stacey and I were already established fitness professionals in this area even though we didn’t have a building to offer our clientele at the time,” said Wise. “So, while the physical location and building was brand new, we had a group of dedicated people waiting for us to open our doors.”

When asked about their plans for growing their business, Wise responded, “Our primary focus will always be serving our current clients better by meeting their needs first. For example, many members were asking about a CrossFit Kids program, and since Stacey was already certified to teach that we recently added that offering for children between 7 and 11.”

For more information about Lumber City Athletics, you can go to their website, lumbercapital.fit or catch Ben & Stacey’s Podcast, The Fitness Movement, on YouTube.

We have had amazingly pleasant weather these past few weeks, and according to the latest forecasts, it appears that it will continue for at least a few more weeks. It is so nice that some of the usual snowbirds have been delaying their regular trip south so that they can take advantage of the unseasonably pleasant conditions right here at home. With daily temperatures running into the mid-30s and mid-40s, what’s not to like?

For those folks who are staying home — at least for now — it might be wise to consider working on a few winter chores. After all, whatever you can accomplish now while the weather is decent is something you won’t have to take care of come spring when you may be focusing on fishing your favorite trout stream or scouting for spring gobblers! Here then, are a few things to consider putting on your “to-do list.”

Bluebirds:

One of the favorite small birds most folks like to observe throughout the year is our Eastern Bluebird. If you want to increase the odds of seeing more bluebirds, installing bluebird birdhouses will help. If you already have these boxes on your property, now is the time to clean out the previous nesting material. Bluebirds prefer to build a new nest rather than take over a box that has material in it from the past season. Two days ago, I

cleaned out 14 boxes – 12 had been used last season, one had not been used at all, and the final one was currently occupied by a field mouse (he doesn’t live there anymore!). If you are thinking of adding a few more bluebird houses, making and putting them up now will make sure they are available for when the earliest bluebirds start looking for nesting sites in mid-March. If you are not into making boxes yourself, you can purchase already-made bluebird houses from the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Howard Nursery at a cost of $18.00 each. Check for availability before making the trip by calling them at (814) 355-4434.

Apple Trees:

Last week I related what a great addition apple trees are to a varied habitat for wildlife and discussed daylighting and pruning any existing apple trees you may have. I would like to emphasize that as long as we continue to enjoy this mild streak of weather we are having, it is the perfect conditions to accomplish the daylighting and pruning. Any nearby trees you remove to open the sunlight to the apple tree can be used to start a brush pile, and the limbs and branches you trim from the apple tree can be placed on top, where the deer will be anxious to nip off the buds of the freshly trimmed limbs.

Whitetail Deer: January 16 was the end of the deer seasons throughout the state, except for WMUs 2B, 5C & 5D, where the season ends on January

28.

After those dates, it is legal to put out supplemental feed and mineral supplements for deer. There are many mineral mixes designed for deer, and this is an important time of year to make it available. The does that were bred and are developing fawns will benefit tremendously as the fawn grows, and later the fawn will benefit by a better milk production by the mother. Supplemental mineral mixes can aid in antler growth in bucks, and in fact, any deer will develop better bone growth by taking in the additional minerals.

Equipment Check:

While the opening day of our trout season and the opening day of spring gobbler season are months away, they both have a way of sneaking up on us before we realize

it! It is rather frustrating when you look over your gear the day or two before these openers and discover something is broken or missing! Good luck finding replacement items on such short notice. Take time on one of the snowy days when you have a fire in the fireplace and a freshly brewed cup of coffee in your hand and drag out your fishing or turkey hunting vests and verify that everything is in place and in good repair.

Work on the “Honey-Do” List:

It may not seem so important now, but when the spring weather does arrive, and you want to take a day or two to fish or hunt, it may just be a bit easier to get “kitchen clearance” from your significant other if you have cleared a number of items off of the “honey-do” list!

Iwas driving home one morning last week when something strange caught my eye; two turkeys were only a few yards off the road on the bank to my right. I pulled over expecting the turkeys to flee — they didn’t. Now seeing turkeys while driving somewhere around here is certainly not a strange sight, but these two turkeys were engaged in a fierce battle with each other, and what made it all the more intriguing was

that they had no concern whatsoever with my close presence. I quickly grabbed my cell phone, pulled up the camera, and started taking pictures out the car window. After shooting some video, I decided to try to get some better shots, so I climbed out of the car; the turkeys continued their combat with no concern at all for my presence.

Now I’ve been hunting turkeys for a long time, and like a lot of other

folks, I have seen my share of them while driving and often, the moving car didn’t create a sudden flight, but I certainly didn’t expect to stop the car, get out and then walk in the open towards them.

To my surprise, I walked up into the edge of the field to within 15 or 20 yards of the combatants, and they showed no concern for me whatsoever, and in

fact, the battle continued for another ten minutes. As you can see in the photo accompanying this piece, the gobblers have their necks stretched, and one gobbler actually has its beak in the mouth of the other. I don’t know how long they had been fighting before I came by, but I watched for 10 or 15 minutes; another car even pulled up along the edge of the field to watch the unusual spectacle.

So, what was that gobbler combat all about? I’m not sure. I know that gobblers will become more aggressive when spring rolls around and the

hunt for receptive females begins. Older, more dominant gobblers want to chase off less mature gobblers. Rival males will try to grasp each other’s head or neck in their bills and try to shove or pull their foe off balance, and the loser could take a thrashing with wings or spurs but what I saw last week was a first for me. We also know that although gobblers may gobble any time of the year, they gobble more during the breeding season. What was interesting was the two gobblers I saw fighting last week never made a peep. Another thought, too, is that I witnessed that battle in the dead of winter months before the spring mating season gets underway, and I’m still baffled that they showed no fear of me.

Well, while we are on the subject of observing turkeys, keep in mind that the Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking people to provide information about turkey flock sightings; they need the date of the sighting, location, and whether the land is public or private.

The turkeys may be trapped and banded but then released at the same sight. In some units, a GPS transmitter will be attached to track the turkey’s movements. It’s all part of a large-scale study that will continue through 2025. Biologists from Maryland, New Jersey, and Ohio have also joined the study. Its hoped the research will provide more information that will give us a better understanding of population dynamics and the types of terrain that are utilized.

Here’s hoping that when spring gobbler season rolls around, I’ll have a couple of big gobblers so intent on fighting each other that I can get off a good shot.

Domination…

…described by Webster’s dictionary as “to influence, control, or rule by superior power or authority.” Numerically speaking, 65-7 about sums it up!

The University of Georgia’s total domination, destruction, and mauling of third-ranked TCU in the most lopsided national championship game in college football history gave the Bulldogs their second consecutive FBS championship, becoming the first team since Alabama in 2011/2012 to accomplish that feat. In doing so, Georgia scored nine touchdowns, won by a record 58 points, and recorded their 29th win in their last 30 games, sending a message impossible to ignore to the other 129 FBS college teams.

Ironically, or perhaps because of it, Georgia coach Kirby Smart was Nick Saban’s coordinator when the Crimson Tide was the last college team to go backto-back.

In his seven years at Georgia, Smart has compiled a better record than Saban did at the same point of his Alabama tenure (81-15 vs. 79-15). Smart trails Saban 3-2 in championships after seven years, and the Bulldog boss is 24 years younger than

his former mentor.

In orchestrating the Los Angeles beat down, the exuberant head canine keeper encouraged his players, fired up the crowd, provided star players with fourth-quarter curtain calls when taken out of the game, and relished in a Gatorade dousing by licking the liquid off his arms while hugging players. He thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of his labor.

In doing so, Georgia kept alive the chance to become the first college program to win three straight undisputed national championships since Minnesota accomplished the feat from 1934-36. Based on Smart’s post-game comments, that may already be on his mind.

“The disease that creeps into your program is called entitlement,” Smart said. “I’ve seen it firsthand, and if you can stomp it out with leadership, then you can stay hungry. You only get one chance to be legendary. I’m not going to leave any regret out there.”

The on-field masterpiece was engineered by 25-year-old, sixth-year quarterback Stetson Bennett IV who twice was overlooked by coaches telling him he was not good enough for the job. Proving them wrong, Bennett has been named the most outstanding player in all four of Georgia’s

last four FBS games.

It was reported that following the game, Smart’s ten-year-old son Andrew was crying. Asked why he was crying, he told his father, “Stetson’s leaving. Stetson’s gone.” While Andrew is losing his hero, who’s been around more than half his young life, Georgia’s opponents may also be shedding tears. The Bulldogs will be returning 15 starters next year, complemented by an outstanding recruiting class with several players coming in via the transfer portal. Repeat championships have become increasingly more difficult to achieve in today’s world of professional, free agency, the collegiate transfer portal, and NIL (name, image, likeness). The New York Yankees were the last MLB team to win consecutive World Series titles when they won three in a row 1998/2000; The New England Patriots last won two straight Super Bowls in 2004/2005; and the Detroit Red Wings were the last NHL team to go back-to-back in 1997/1998.

The NBA’s Golden State Warriors have been somewhat of an exception to the dominance rule. The team won consecutive titles in 2017/2018 but has appeared in 6 of the last 8 NBA finals, also being crowned champion in 2022.

Compounding the rest of college football’s nightmare is the reminder that the Southeastern Conference is not just about Georgia. The powerful SEC has won 13 of the last 17 national championship games. In the league’s last 11 CFP games,

SEC teams have compiled a 10-1 record. In addition to, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi State, and Tennessee all won bowl games this past season.

In its never-ending quest to gain a foothold on the SEC’s football dominance, the Big Ten took a step forward with Michigan and Ohio State making the four-team FBS field; their close late-game losses to Georgia and TCU where perhaps the best two games of the college season. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maryland, and Iowa picked-up bowl wins for the league.

To the thrill of many locals, Penn State’s 35-21 Rose Bowl victory over number 8-ranked Utah helped erase some of the sting of the regular season losses to the Big Ten’s big boys. With the CFP expansion looming in 2024, optimism is growing that the Happy Valley crew can get a future invitation to college football’s big dance, but the ever-increasing presence of the NIL issue has the power to change a team’s performance from one year to the next.

PSU’s James Franklin is well aware of the NIL’s influence on the college game.

“There are major concerns with what’s going on in college. There are really no guardrails. There’s not a lot of guidance or governance. Some of the recruiting conversations happening are crazy. It is about as crazy as anything I’ve seen in my 26 years of doing this.”

Through it all, one thing seems fairly certain in the college football world; Georgia remains on everyone’s mind!

Big Spence is back in town. He needed a well-deserved break. Our major renovation project was on hold. And it is time to get some stuff done. Unfortunately, I didn’t get much accomplished over the holidays. The two-car garage and living space now have a roof. My father and I are doing our best. I am learning a great deal about remodeling, but perhaps we should have hired someone. I continue to document all of our mishaps. NETFLIX is on speed dial. Getting our 75 x 80 single-unit tub into the house was a complete disaster. Oh, you should have heard the F-bombs.

We finally figured it out, and we both felt grand. We decided to celebrate. But instead of going to dinner, we stopped by Lycoming College for a 4:00 p.m. matinee. The Warriors were hosting

Kings College in a Middle Atlantic Freedom Conference game. There wasn’t much of a crowd because the students were still away. Big Spence and I sat in our usual spot. Usually, I shake a few hands, but I took a back seat. Everyone wanted to say hello to my pops. My father headed up Admissions and Financial Aid at Lycoming for 26 years. He retired six years ago, and I am thinking this was the first game back. It was nice being home. Lycoming was on fire. They played a great game. Kings had no chance. The Warriors shot an incredible 52.5% from 3-point range. They pummeled the Monarchs 92-54. Ly-

coming made 21 3-pointers, and everyone was involved. Seniors D yson Harward was 4-5, and Mo Terry was 4-6 from beyond. The Warriors were rolling. They were playing great defense, and they made the extra pass. It was a great afternoon in Lamade Gym. “We played well,” Mo Terry explained. “Our guards did a great job getting into the paint. That really helps with our ball movement. Everyone was on the same page. We were making the extra pass. We had a lot of good looks, and tonight we

cashed in.”

Mo is one of my personal favorites. He is an extraordinary young man. I always enjoy our chest bumps during pregame. Mo always goes out of his way to say hello. He is so good to Jensen and the other young fans. Terry is strong as an ox, and he is the ultimate team player. He can play a number of positions and is so unselfish — a great student. My man is involved with so many things on campus. Seriously. The guy is a rockstar, and I cannot say enough good things. Mo is a winner. A leader both on and off the floor. He is another reason why I am proud to be an Alum.

“The guys were playing hard on the defensive end, too,” Terry continued. “We contested shots and rebounded the ball. That opened up the offense. Helped us dictate the pace. We like playing a certain way. But again. We made shots. 21-40? That is crazy. That was the difference tonight.”
