Christmas came early this past week in the highest-profile vape and cannabis oil case ever witnessed. I’m going to pick my words wisely, be brief, and not allow the Biden administration to turn me into the grinch with a pen. Most importantly, I don’t want to rant and allow the madness of the world to take my peace. This is the most joyous time of the year; we all need to focus on finding peace and kindness for our fellow man.

I hope Britney Griner, the American basketball star that was imprisoned in Russia, now uses her new lease on life to verbalize how very blessed she is to live in the United States of America. Griner and many of those around her have never shown the respect and patriotism for our Nation you hope those in the media spotlight would reflect. I hope her firsthand experiences of what really goes on in Russia, and countries like it, changes her perception of what is most important. I hope this gift allows her to understand why Americans and those that provide her freedom get so upset when celebrities turn their back on the American Flag and National Anthem. And then in time of trouble, run to it. That gets me to the Biden administration, which negotiated a deal with Vladimir

Putin to trade basketball star Griner’s freedom for that of international terrorist Viktor Bout. Bout who is known as the ‘Merchant of Death’ was convicted of conspiracy to kill Americans relating to his support of a Colombian terrorist organization. He is simply a high-end arms dealer that oversees a cartel that provides weapons to anybody that wants to kill. They also specialize in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and basically anything that infringes on human rights. The Nicholas Cage film “Lord of War” is supposedly based on his notoriety for running a fleet of Soviet cargo planes into war-torn parts of Africa.

It should not matter what your political affiliation is; this should appall and scare every American. President Biden proudly released this terrorist to a madman and unstable nation that is determined to start World War III. At best, this is an example of politics and political favors being more important than the American people and our national security. At worst, you have to wonder who is actually calling the shots and writing the policy behind President Biden and what the agenda is. This is definitely not in the best interest of our Nation or the free world.

I’ll stop there and wish a Merry

Tis the Season

Wow, it’s hard to believe Santa’s midnight ride is only ten days away. There’s a lot of Christmas going on around the office, as Editor Steph has three elves on loan from the North Pole helping with our Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships Coloring Contest. Just a quick reminder to parents and grandparents, all the kids’ great work must be received by 2:00 p.m. this Friday.

Another Christmas event that is winding down is our Salvation Army Red Kettle bell ringing to carry on Dave Sechler’s great work. If possible, please drop by or mail in the donation by December 24th. Webb Weekly will match your generosity.

In closing things out this week, it was great to hear from Dan Fredericks. He wanted me to share with you a picture and story of his 14-year-old daughter Raigan’s monster buck.

Both also informed me how excited they were to show the monster to Raigan’s mom and gram, and had forgotten to register in our Buck Contest.

The trophy sported 10 points with a 21”

outside spread. Raigan calmly dropped it with her trusted Savage 243 Muddy Girl rifle, making dad is a very proud papa. What an absolute bruiser of a buck, but that wasn’t the best part of the conversation.

What brought a tear to my eye was talking with the daddy/daughter duo about how much they love hunting, fishing, and sharing God’s Green Earth together. When I asked Raigan what the best part of the hunt was, without missing a beat, she said, “spending time in the outdoors with my dad and enjoying nature.” Dad had already shared the same sentiment in an earlier conversation. Thank you both for the great buck story but even more for sharing your love of family and the outdoors with all of us.

Full details about our Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest can be found on page 57. It runs through the end of the upcoming second season.

God Bless America.

Ho-Ho-Ho Holiday Happenings!

Sleigh bells are starting to ring, so far, we’ve been pretty lucky in that our lanes aren’t glistening…

There is a lot going on this time of year to help celebrate the holidays. I thought it might be fun (and convenient) to do a bit of a ‘Holiday Round-Up’ to let you know about all of the great events that are happening locally for the holiday season! I’m sure my list is incomplete, and I do apologize for that, but I did my best to dig up as many events that I could.

The Community Theater League in downtown Williamsport still has a couple of nights left of their production of “Miracle on 34th Street.” They have shows on December 15th-18th. Tickets are $27 for adults, and $22 for seniors, and $20 for students, and are available at ctlshow.com, or by calling the box office at 570-327-1777. In case you aren’t familiar, “Miracle on 34th Street” is about, “Kris Kringle, an old man in a retirement home, gets a job working as Santa for Macy’s. Kris unleashes waves of good will with Macy’s customers and the commercial world of New York City

by referring parents to other stores to find exactly the toy their child has asked for. Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy’s vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. Especially at stake is one little girl’s belief in Santa.”

On December 18th, at 3:00 p.m., St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 1400 Market St., Williamsport, will be hosting an Interactive Nativity Story of Christmas for Families. Families get to participate in the telling the Christmas Story as angels & stars, lambs & shepherds, and kings and camels.

If you would rather not cook on Christmas, the Young Men’s Democratic Club is offering a Christmas Dinner Buffet from 12:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. The dinner will feature baked ham, Italian seasoned chicken, scalloped potatoes, sweet potatoes, veggies, cole slaw, roll/butter & dessert. Cost is $12 for members, and $15

for non-members, open to the public. Reservations must be made by December 16th, by calling 570-326-7609.

December 16th brings us Trinity Episcopal Church’s ‘Dwell in the Light of Christmas,’ event. This event will feature Christmas caroling and giving to benefit children in foster care in our community. Musicians from Williamsport and Loyalsock high schools, the Civic Chorus and Epic Percussion will be there. Assemble at 5:30 p.m. in Trinity’s parking lot, 844 W. 4th St., Williamsport. Candlelit processional at 6:00 p.m. to Park Place for caroling.

You still have time to make some ‘sweet’ memories by heading to Purity Candy in Allenwood to watch them make candy canes! They are open Monday-Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. They are even open Christmas Eve from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

If you have an antique lover in the family, and still need some last minute gifts, be sure to check our Roan Inc.’s annual pre-Christmas auction. The auction will be Friday & Saturday, December 16th & 17th, beginning at 10:00 a.m. each day. Celebrate the joys and traditions of Christmas in community at First Church Williamsport, 604 Market St., Williams-

When it comes to fall/winter trends, my mind often jumps to cold-weather staples like cozy turtlenecks, oversized sweaters, fleece leggings, and wooly socks. But as the holidays gear up, the excitement to celebrate sparks an opportunity to set these casual pieces aside and indulge in a bit of glamour. Holiday dressing can range from ugly sweaters and Santa hats to sequined cocktail dresses, but for this year, it’s all about turning heads and making style statements. Here’s a rundown of this season’s holiday dressing trends.

First, up fancy pants. After all the Zooms and virtual contact where we all wore shirts with sweatpants, now is the time to get creative with bottoms. Fancy pants can include embellished denim, silky trousers, or patterned pants. Dillard’s has an elastic waist straight leg pull-on sequined pant in black that is festive while also sophisticated. These can be your party pants for this Christmas, celebrations into the new year, and beyond. I love the high rise and elastic waist, leaving room for holiday

treats, and would pair this with heels and a fitted knit. Express has a metallic faux leather straight-leg pant in gunmetal that is certain to be the start of any party. I’d style these pants with a bodysuit, blazer, and boots for an edgy take on holiday cheer. For patterned or loose trousers, you can style them with a more minimalistic top.

However, if you’re more of a maximalist, then you are in luck, as shiny embellishments abound with plenty of new ways to shine. H&M features all sorts of sequined pieces. From a mini-dress with beaded fringe to a silver-sequined tank top and all the way through to a sequined bomber jacket in the men’s department. They also have sequined options for little ones to make a whole sequined-up family. What a Christmas picture that would

a season’s greeting that won’t be ignored. Other types of embellishments include paillettes, like those found on a disc miniskirt over at Nordstrom, feathertrimmed blouses from River Island, and gemstone-embellished boots from Akira. In fact, a paillette mini, feathered blouse, and gemstone studded booties would be quite the outfit this holiday season. You may not even need to decorate for the party with that look.

Of course, you may not be wanting to make quite so much noise with looks dangling in sequins and fringe. Another way to turn heads during the holidays is with unexpected color. There’s been a shift from traditional jewel-toned holiday colors toward more fun electric hues. Think of shades like hot pink, bright lime, and electric blue that evoke positivity and high energy for the season. Eloquii’s velvet tie waist gown in festive fuchsia makes for a colorful yet elegant outfit for more formal holiday affairs. Mango’s bow satin blouse in bright blue works well with jeans or trousers for a more casual yet still chic shindig.

Speaking of bows, what would the season be without shiny bright ribbons all tied up with care? Bows can work for outfits, not just gifts! Whether it be on a

garment or as an accessory, bows bring a sense of whimsy to your holiday look. The Belle Bow from Hill House will perfectly top off your family gathering outfit with its barrette closure for an easy yet polished hair accessory. Macy’s women’s button-up bow blouse comes in rose, black, and ivory and is perfect for the office party, as it can transition from your desk to drinks when worn with a pencil skirt and heels.

Sure, not everyone can go out and buy a brand-new holiday wardrobe full of sequins, shiny colors, and bows. However, you may be able to give a nod to these trends with a simple yet high-shine handbag. Keep your outfit understated with a little black dress or blazer and jeans, and pump up the look with an embellished handbag, such as Walmart’s sunrise shoulder bag in silver rhinestones. Or go for a sleek sheen with a shiny patent leather handbag from Amazon for this season’s rounds of gatherings and events.

No matter what you’re wearing to celebrate, the important thing is being with loved ones, appreciating blessings, and being thankful we all survived another year. However, if you can look great while doing so, all the better!

Eagle Grange No. 1: Pennsylvania’s First Grange

Several weeks ago, in November, the National Grange organization celebrated its 155th anniversary. In view of that, I thought it would be appropriate to write about a local grange with a historical distinction, Eagle Grange No. 1, located right here in Lycoming County, was the first Grange founded in the state of Pennsylvania.

A little background about the organization: the national Grange organization was founded on November 15, 1867, by Oliver H. Kelley and a group of six other concerned farmers. They were interested in setting up a nationwide organization that would serve the interests of farmers and agriculture-related issues and would promote fellowship. It would also educate farmers on new improvements in farming methods through the dissemination of written materials. It was patterned after a secret society like the Masonic Order and would have four degrees representing the four seasons of the year and would utilize ritual much like the

Masons. The founders thought that it was important to have women, as well as young people, be an important part of the organization. They determined that the best way to promote the new organization was to send a “lecturer” or “deputy” into farming areas to tell the story of the Grange and to create interest in launching the movement into new areas. The new organization was dubbed the “Order of the Patrons of Husbandry” or the “Grange,” which means a house with a farm attached.

The Grange movement was also formed as a reaction to the economic realities of the late 1860s and 1870s in which monopoly capitalists such as J.P. Morgan and others who controlled banking and railroad interests squeezed small farmers with high-interest rates, high rail shipping costs and high storage fees for their crops, causing great economic hardship for farmers. Grangers united to put political pressure on state legislatures and the U. S. Congress to regulate large economic interests. The Grangers also put up can-

didates for various political offices that would better serve the interests of the small farmer. The economic “fat cats” fought back hard, legally challenging much of the reform legislation, and the U.S. Supreme Court, which contained members who had previously served as attorneys for these interests, struck down many of these laws in some notable decisions in the late 1870s and early 1880s.

Against this backdrop, Luke Eger, a Montgomery area farmer, enters the picture. Eger subscribed to several farm magazines, including “The Prairie Farmer.” It was in this magazine that Eger found out about the Grange movement. He wrote to Grange founder Oliver Kelley for further information on the movement. Eger then promoted the movement among his neighbors and friends. At first, he made little progress with them, but he persisted in persuading them with his enthusiasm. Finally, enough interested people were persuaded to organize a grange. He then sent a letter, along with membership fees from the interested people, to Oliver Kelley in February of 1871. In March, Col. D.D. Curtiss, representing

the National Grange, came to Montgomery to preside over the chartering of Pennsylvania’s first Grange, named Eagle Grange No. 1.

The Eagle Grange has called several locations as its home. Its early meetings were held at a schoolhouse near the current location, along the Montgomery Pike. It also met in Montgomery’s Town Hall. It later met for about two years at the home of Eagle Grange founder Luke Eger and the home of Frank Porter. Finally, in 1888 the Eagle Grange bought ¼ of an acre of land from Eger for $20, and on this land, adjoining the Pine Street School, a two-story grange hall was erected. It was dedicated on February 22, 1888. In 1940 the Grange hall was moved across the highway because the highway was being widened. It remains in that location today.

Luke Eger’s Grange vision remains healthy today through the efforts of the dedicated members of Eagle Grange No. 1, who give the organization their time, talent, and support, .and look forward to the Eagle Grange legacy continuing for many years to come. There are several other Granges still in existence in Lycoming County, as well.

County Hall Corner

The building directly across the street from the Lycoming County Courthouse is 33 West Third Street. Owned by the county for the past couple of decades, it has largely served as a rental property, but over time the tenants have moved out, and this has opened up the possibilities for the county to house services such as the Sheriff’s Department and Voter Services in this location. But it has also opened up a new and very innovative option that is the first of its kind in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is called the Partnership Health Center, contracted through the New Jersey-based Integrity Health Program. Officially opened three weeks ago, it is a complete primary health center for Lycoming County employees and their family members, and also county employee retirees.

And using the word “complete” is not an exaggeration. Staffed by a physician and two nurse practitioners, as well as other health professionals, it is a one-stop shop of medical treatment providing primary care, urgent

care, behavioral and emotional health, x-ray, blood work/labs, physical therapy, exams, and more. Ever have a bug and wonder if it might be the start of something serious? This facility can do Covid, strep, and flu testing and have a result in half an hour. Same-day appointments and, at least for now, almost no waiting times.

It is still not complete, as there will soon be a pharmacy and chiropractic treatment available as well, but the initial reaction from the county employees who have taken advantage of the facility is that it is everything that was advertised and more. In fact, a number of county employees have al-

ready changed their primary doctor to this new Partnership Health Center because of all the advantages they have discovered. Perhaps the best part is that there are no co-pays — all the treatment is at no cost to those who have county health insurance.

For several years now, the Lycoming County government has been making a comprehensive initiative to become a ‘first-choice’ employer for applicants. As noted in the November 23rd column entitled, “Help Wanted, and Help is On the Way,” the county has developed a new policy to align employee compensation with consideration of their education and experience. Though this is still in its inaugural stage, the initial feedback has been quite positive. Yet, in this day and age, health care is probably the highest concern for an employee after salary. Unfortunately for county government, this has also been one of the most difficult challenges as health care costs have continually increased each year. In years past, it was not uncommon to hear the county commissioners lament in their end-ofmeeting comments that “something had to be done” about health coverage because it was eating their budget alive. It became apparent that it would not be

found in just another health plan, so they started looking for more innovative solutions, and this is what led them to Integrity Health in New Jersey.

Seven counties in New Jersey utilize Integrity Health, and this is what got the attention of Lycoming County. The availability of a location right across the street from the County Courthouse and Executive Plaza, where a majority of county employees work, was also a big advantage. Instead of having to take time off for a healthcare visit, it is now literally just around the corner.

Lycoming County is being watched by the other counties in Pennsylvania as everyone is struggling with rising medical benefit costs. It is rare in politics to be willing to be pioneers because the possibility of failure is high, and that impacts elections. Hats off to the Lycoming County commissioners for their willingness to make such a bold move and for Director of Administration Matt McDermott and the other employees who have been working diligently for many months to make this project work. Those looking for a career with a future should seriously consider the opportunities working for Lycoming County — it is getting better and better every day.

Candle in the Window Andrea’s Home Cookin…

Christmas is an amazing time of year. There are so many things to do, to plan for, and to see. One of those things is Christmas lights. Every year people dig them out or buy the latest trend and decorate their trees and their homes with these colorful and cheerful reminders of the holiday season. Christmas lights actually started out just as candles. These candles were attached to the tree using wax or pins. I’m not sure how this wasn’t a fire hazard, but I won’t ask questions.

Candles in the windows are one of my favorite nostalgic parts of Christmas. I remember as a little girl, when it got dark, mom would say to my brother Luke and me, “OK, kids, go ahead and turn the candles on!” We would run around and turn them all on in each room. I would hop on the couch and reach up to the window to twist the little bulb in. There was something about the glow from a candle in the window at Christmas time. The two candles in my bedroom windows shined out into the night as our white birch tree stood outside my window. The white lights

on that tree reflected off my window from the front of the house. It was magical for an eight-year-old little girl — my other bedroom window on the side of the house facing towards South Williamsport. There stood the mountain with a glow from Candy Cane Lane that I could see from my little back bedroom. I swear to this day, that’s what started my obsession. I could close my eyes and picture that tall pine tree all decked out in C9 bulbs from trunk to the tippy top. You could see it from so far away. Man, did those bulbs put off the light! No wonder I could see it from my bedroom. The whole street back in those days were mostly C9s and C7s.

Having the world a little brighter this time of year is one of the best parts of the season. It’s a fact that lights make people happier and smile for no reason. It just wouldn’t feel like Christmas without them. Can you imagine Christmas with no Christmas lights at all!? I can’t even go there with myself. This is coming from the person who was over to Candy Cane Lane four times before it was even December! So, from Thanksgiving night

to November 30th, I was there four times out of seven. Each time I went up and down at least four times. *Insert my cheesy smile here.* It’s no joke, though. Each time I smile just as much, and my heart is just happy. I don’t call it my happy place for nothin’! There are so many wonderful homes in our area who pour their hearts and souls into decorating. It’s fun to drive around and look at all the lights. But there is one home in particular that I have to tell you all about. It’s a hidden little treasure that I found probably six years or so ago, and

each year it gets bigger and bigger!

They call it Rudolph’s Runway. It’s located on West Emery Church Road in Linden. From 220 south, turn right onto Pine Run Road. Go two miles and then turn right onto West Emery Church Road. Follow this until you reach the lights! This house will completely just blow you away. You pull up to the driveway and literally can’t believe your eyes. The time into this has to be weeks of work. I’m not even kidding. My favorite part is the island of misfit toys. It’s actually on an island! I don’t want to

give anything away, but it’s awesome! My second favorite part is the Grinch up top of the driveway. Every year more gets added to it. There is so much to see! You can walk it or drive it, and the owners of this house are really kind. I’ve met them a few times. They hand out cookies or candy canes some nights to folks who stop. I promise it will be worth the time and the drive. Find them here and details at www.rudolphsrunway.com.

December 19th, most of my readers know where we will be, but it’s the night we always walk up Candy Cane Lane to keep our special night alive each year. I was proposed to on Candy Cane Lane eighteen years ago on that night. Chris took me to Olive Garden before we walked up Candy Cane Lane, so we always go there for dinner first, too. It’s fun recreating that night year after year, and our kids always look forward to it. It’s been a few years since I’ve shared the whole story, so I’ll have to share it again soon with you all. It’s a night I will never forget, and each year that magical street gives me back that memory and joy. But for now, go check out some lights and make some new memories of your own. Enjoy and have fun with my annual Candy Cane Lane Scavenger Hunt! Remember, it goes clear up Summer Street to the tippy top and turns right onto Spring Street up in the cul-de-sac! Can you find them all? Happy hunting!

Wrap it up with “The Women of Rothschild” by Natalie Livingstone, a book about influential women in one famous family, women who left their marks on the world, despite that the men in the family tried to shut them out; or with “The Scandalous Hamiltons” by

Bill Shaffer, the story of a Gilded-Age scandal and the beginning of tabloidstyle journalism.

For your media-obsesssed giftee, “It’s Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO” by Felix Gillette and John Koblin is a nice eye-opener and a look at how we watch television, even in an age of streaming.

Pair it with a book that reads like a movie: “Same Ground” by Russell Wangersky, a book about a journey across America, in search of a family story.

For the loner in your life, or the person who longs for connection, “On Belonging” by Kim Samuel might be a great gift. It’s a book for our times, in four categories: isolation in our relationships, belonging in nature, being alone in political spheres, and a sense of belonging within our inner cores.

Wrap it up with “The Newlyweds: Rearranging Marriage in Modern India” by Mansi Choksi, a book about three modern couples in India who’ve set aside tradition and arranged marriages in favor of love on their own terms.

If you’ve got a rabid current events fan on your gift list this year, then wrap up “The Storm is Upon Us: How QAnon Became a Movement, Cult, and

Conspiracy Theory of Everything” by Mike Rothschild. It’s an eye-opener. Wrap it up with “Seek and Hide” by Amy Gajda. It’s about our right to privacy throughout history, what it means, and how the demand for privacy today can be a good thing or a bad thing, or “Conspiracies and Secret Societies, third edition” by Brad Steiger and Sherry Hansen Steiger. How could anyone not want to own one of the last books by these two late, great authors?

The reader who’s concerned about migration and immigration this year will want to unwrap “Nomad Century: How Climate Migration Will Reshape Our World” by Gaia Vince, who says that climate change will cause worldwide change in cities; and “Somewhere We are Human,” edited by Reyna Grande and Sonia Guinansaca, which is a collection of stories from migrants and new citizens.

Is there a parent on your gift list, one that continually gets to the end of their rope? Then wrap up “What to Do About Your Troubled Child” by Laura J. Stevens, MS and Richard W. Walker, Jr., MD It’s a book about behavioral disorders in children ages three to eleven, and how to cope with them.

Won’t your reader enjoy “Great Short Books” by Kenneth C. Davis this

holiday? The answer is “yes”: this book is about books – specifically, more than fifty short novels by authors you know and don’t know. Wrap it up with a gift certificate to your favorite bookstore.

For the person who is obsessed with current events, “Adrift” by Scott Galloway could be THE gift this year.

It’s a book of charts: where America’s been, where we seem to be heading, and how our leaders are leading. Pair it up with “Myth America: Historians Take on the Biggest Legends and Lies about Our Past,” edited by Kevin M. Kruse and Julian E. Zelizer. Together, these books are both eye-openers, for sure. The historian on your gift list will whoop when the wrapping comes off “The Escape Artist” by Jonathan Freedland.

It’s the story of a man who actually broke out of Auschwitz and lived to tell the world what was going on. It’s a true story that reads like a deadly thriller.

If there’s someone on your list who is interested in the paranormal, then wrap up “Here & Hereafter” by Tyler Henry, who is a Hollywood medium. What can your giftee learn from the dead? Find out by pairing it with “Hollywood Horrors” by Andrea Van Landingham. Oh, the scandals and murders in Tinseltown past!

Chase showed up at an outside cat colony and was so sweet that his colony caregiver, who also happened to be an SPCA volunteer, could not help but notice that he could adapt to living as an inside pet. Plus, he had the dangerous habit of running into traffic. So, his caregiver brought him into the SPCA. Now the jolly five-month-old is looking for a home for the holidays.

Marshall has overcome challenges to get where he is today. His finder discovered him with his two brothers outside the YMCA as kittens. Unfortunately, their eyes were severely infected, which led to permanent scarring. As a result, they have some vision loss, but they are happy, boisterous six-month-old kittens in every other way. Marshall (and his brothers) are available for adoption at our partner business, PetSmart.

The Gifts of Heaven – Joy Faith

Note: This is the third article in a series for Advent. Previous articles are always available online at www.webbweekly.com.

How are you feeling? Last week I asked about how you were doing. Asking about your feelings is a completely different question. Believe it or not, you can be doing awful while feeling great. You can also be doing great while feeling awful. Again, how are you feeling? What words would you use to describe your emotions right now? Happy or sad? Frustrated or content? Anxious or peaceful? Desperate or hopeful? Fearful or confident? Nervous or calm? What are you feeling?

Understanding our feelings – what causes them and how they affect us – is vitally important. To dismiss or ignore our feelings is to be irresponsible with a vital component of worship God has wired into us. Jesus included our emotions in the greatest command, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” See Mark 12:30. Why would God include emotions? And why did He list emotions first? He did so because He knows how much our emo-

tions affect our bodies, our behaviors, our relationships, and our potential. Believer, God expects you to get your emotions in order. Your obedience to His greatest command is the foundation of your worship. Yes, it’s that serious.

The emotion God wants most to see in believers is joy because it is the right response to grace. In the Scriptures, the word joy is translated from the Greek chara (pronounced with a hard k). It is sometimes translated as rejoice or gladness, or delight.

Chara is defined as joy experienced because of grace. Joy is the Spirit-empowered grateful reaction to grace received. It is linked to the word charis, which simply means grace or kindness. It is also linked to the word chairo, which means to rejoice or delight in God’s favor or grace.

As with hope and peace, joy is not the result of a problem-free life. Rather, it is the desire to focus on the blessings of grace even in the midst of problems. It is Christian discipline empowered by the infilling presence of the Holy Spirit. Consider Jesus in Hebrews 12:2, “For the joy set before him he endured the cross . . .” How could Jesus find the emotion of joy in His suffering and death? He did it by seeing the

power of grace being released through His actions. If you have ever suffered to see someone else be blessed, then you understand what Jesus was feeling. Yes, even in great suffering, joy can flourish.

Consider Paul in II Corinthians 12:7-10. He declares, “I delight (take joy) in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties . . .” Paul knew he had received God’s amazing grace, and it gave him joy – even in hardship. That’s the power of being genuinely grateful for grace.

Consider the opposite reaction in the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. Matthew 18:23-25. His response to the lavish grace of His master should have been joy. It wasn’t - it was greed. Consider the arrogant Pharisee’s response to grace. It should have been joy. It wasn’t - it was pride. See Luke 18:9-14. Both examples reveal what God thinks of ungrateful people who do not recognize the amazing grace they have received. It’s not good.

A lack of joy is the symptom of an ungrateful heart, of focusing on what we don’t have rather than on what we do have. It is the sin of envy and covetousness. It is entitlement and idolatry. It is deep sin. Seriously, we can’t truly worship God if our emotions are wrong. It’s that important. My friends, joy is the Spirit-empowered result (fruit, see Galatians 5) of gratefully acknowledging grace received. If you cannot gratefully acknowledge receiving the blessings of God’s overwhelming grace, then you will never experience deep and

abiding joy.

It’s time to count our blessings. Yes, as the old song says, we need to name them one by one and see what God has done. If we’re willing to see and delight in the vast and amazing grace God has poured out on us, then our hearts will be filled with joy, inexpressible, and full of glory.

I confess it’s not easy. But I know being joyful is the fruit of being grateful. So, when I’m struggling to feel joy, I remind myself that God found Hartzell in the awful muck and mire of sin and death. He took ahold of me and pulled me from the despair of guilt and hopelessness, and through the grace of Jesus Christ, He forgave my sins and adopted me into His forever family. I then remind myself that if the blessings of forgiveness, eternal life, and peace with God are the only blessings of grace I ever receive on planet earth, they are enough to keep me joyfully praising and worshiping God forever and ever.

And friends, once my heart gets in the posture of gratitude, I then begin seeing more clearly the abundant and precious blessings of grace He has given to me. As I count my blessings, joy fills my heart.

How are you feeling? Well, you can do something about that. Start counting your blessings, and joy will rise up in you like a spring in the desert. In fact, keep counting your blessings until joy bubbles up and overflows out of you onto those around you. Yes, joy is contagious, so during this special season, let’s work together to start a pandemic of gratitude and joy!

Living Well…

Tips for Dealing with Holiday Stress

For many, the holiday season brings joy and is a feast for the senses. It is a time when the house smells of holiday spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg and sweet treats baking — the noise of family gatherings and holiday music playing in the background. Decorations light up the neighborhood at night, and festivities keep us busy. For others, however, the holidays can be a time of great stress and even depression. Feelings of obligation dominate, and the chaos and commercialism of it all lead some people to just wish it would end. Many people do not have family or friends to keep them company, and for them, it triggers feelings of great loss. According to the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medical School, and other health experts, certain steps can be taken to alleviate much of the tension that might come with this time of year. Own your feelings. Experts at the Mayo Clinic suggest that if you feel

stressed, acknowledge it. If you feel sad, that’s ok as well. Anger, tension, happiness, joy — whatever the feeling, own it and be honest with yourself and others. Bottling up these emotions will only make negative feelings worse.

Accept imperfection. Everyday life is never perfect, so why should the holidays be any different? Sometimes plans change, or you can’t find the perfect gift. Maybe dinner gets burned, or you have an argument with a loved one. Roll with it and move on so you can enjoy the good things that are going on. Sometimes imperfect is still pretty awesome.

Practice forgiveness. There is a saying that hate is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. Set aside old grievances or at least put them on pause. Letting go is not weakness but strength. Chances are you will feel significantly better and may even heal some relationships in the process.

Plan but be flexible. It is impossible to plan for everything but prepare as much as possible. Set aside time to shop for food and gifts. Prep what you can for meals. Make time for visits with friends and family. Organize as much as possible while allowing for change (see previous paragraph). Most things won’t go exactly to plan, but planning does help keep things somewhat less stressful.

Talk it out. If you feel completely overwhelmed, talk to someone. A friend, family member, someone at church, or even an online counsel-

or. For some, the holidays can be a time of extreme loneliness. No one should ever have to feel that they are completely isolated, however. There are numerous support groups and counselors available to help you get through tough times.

Just say no. It is our nature as humans to want to please each other. If someone close to us asks for help or wants us to visit, it can be hard to turn them down, especially this time of the year. Sometimes, however, we simply cannot fit it all in. Just politely say no. Your friends, co-workers, and family

will usually be understanding — eventually.

Take a time-out. With all of the chaos of cooking, shopping, parties, and people, sometimes we just need a break. Take a time-out. A break might be just what you need to recharge your batteries and help you remember what you love most about this time of year. Take a walk. Read a book. Mediate or simply turn on some soothing music. Practice self-care. Just because the holidays are a busy time of the year does not mean that you should completely ignore yourself. Eat healthy

food and get plenty of sleep. Manage your stress and exercise. Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol, and, most importantly, be kind to yourself.

This year don’t let the holidays turn into something you dislike or just want to survive. Make the most of this time of the year by focusing on the things that matter, such as friends and family. If you’re lonely, reach out to a friend. If you don’t have one, make one. Be mindful of what the holidays are meant to symbolize, and allow yourself to feel the joy that you deserve.

Uptown Music Collective Enrolling for Upcoming Winter Semester

Go beyond music at the Uptown Music Collective! The Collective’s winter enrollment week begins on Dec. 12 and runs until Dec. 17, 2022. Enrollment is open for both in-person and virtual private lessons on guitar, vocals, bass, keyboards, and drums. The Winter Semester will begin on Jan. 9, 2023, and will run for 15 weeks.

The Winter Semester will see the continuation of in-person classes and workshops for students, as well as the Adult Music Program, known as “AMP”. This program is intended for those who wish that the Collective had been around when they were younger. AMP is specifically designed with adult students in mind, while still applying the Collective’s renowned music curriculum. Classes and workshops are offered at no additional charge to those students enrolled in private lessons at the Collective.

“The Collective is always enrolling for private lessons,” said Jared Mondell, UMC assistant executive director. “Our enrollment weeks are the best time to get involved, but our doors are always open to those who want to connect with music.”

In the last 22+ years, the Uptown Music Collective has grown from what many once called “the best-kept secret in the Williamsport area,” to one of the area’s

most highly respected, nonprofit educational organizations. While the school is dedicated to providing a well-rounded education to students of all ages, it focuses many of its programs on students 8 to 18 years old. The Uptown Music Collective is known for its positive peer group, inspiring teachers, and a diverse multitude of performance opportunities.

“I’ve loved music ever since I was little, but never had the opportunity to get involved with it,” said Leah Batman, UMC senior student. “That was until I heard about the Collective at the age of 8 and my world turned upside-down. Over the years, my love of music has grown from a hobby into a passion, and it is now what I want to do for the rest of my life. That is all thanks to the Collective. It has given me opportunities most kids my age could never dream of, and it has taught me so much about music and life. It broke me out of my shell at a very young age and has since shaped me into the person I am today. Over the past nine years, the Collective has been a lot of work, but, if you ask me, I’d say it’s definitely worth it!”

Throughout the Collective’s 2023 Winter Semester, its wildly popular performance program will be in full swing on the stage at the Community Arts Center in downtown Williamsport. Upcoming shows in-

Tickets for all of these show are on sale now at the CAC’s website, caclive.com. Even though the Collective is known for highly talented student performers, there is no previous experience needed to enroll and take lessons. There are currently openings for students of all levels who are looking for private instruction. The school also offers financial assistance upon request and scholarship opportunities each year.

The school feels strongly about the role of music in creating well-rounded, thoughtful young people, and works to establish characteristics like self-discipline and personal responsibility in each of its students through healthy habits such as practice and self-control. Uptown Music Collective students consistently perform at high levels not only musically, but also in their respective schools and as valuable members of other community organizations.

‘Tis the season for holiday gatherings where we share food, time together, and germs. No matter where you are, keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself from germs that can make you sick. Regularly washing your hands or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water aren’t readily available helps keep you and those around you healthy.

The CDC recommends washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. That’s about as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. It’s important to use soap and water and consider your technique. Turn one palm upward under the nozzle of the soap bottle and pump out some soap with the other hand. Rub your palms all over, including the fingernails, and then rinse it under running water to wash off. When you’re done, dry your hands using a paper or cloth towel and use the towel to turn off the spigot. If you are using a paper towel, dispose of it.

Water and soap may not always be immediately accessible, and in these cases using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is adequate. Ensure the sanitizer contains at least 60% alcohol. Squirt a dime to quarter-size amount in the palm of your hand and then rub all surfaces of your hands and fingers until dry.

When to Wash

You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:

– Before, during, and after preparing food

– Before and after eating food

– Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick

– Before and after treating a cut or wound

– Before touching your eyes, nose, or mouth

– After using the toilet

– After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the restroom

– After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing

– After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste

– After handling pet food or pet treats

– After touching garbage

– After touching objects or surfaces that may be frequently touched by other people, such as door handles, tables, gas pumps, shopping carts, or electronic cashier registers/screens Explaining Germs to Kids

While you want your kids to be aware of hygiene and what causes illness in them, you should not instill fear in them about germs. The concept of germs is abstract for children, but important as teaching them about germs and explaining hygiene make it easy for you

to keep them healthy. Kids often think that germs are bugs, insects, or something gross. Explain to them what they are and start with the basics and expand as they grow.

Start teaching proper hand hygiene at a young age when we’re teaching other hygiene behaviors (bathroom, kitchen/food preparation) to help connect the dots to the children that germs are everywhere, and we always need to be practicing proper hygiene. Young children learn by imitating the behaviors of adults in their lives. When you make handwashing part of your routine, you’re setting an example for your children to follow.

An important step of teaching about germs for kids that many parents miss: Having your child repeat back to you what you said, so that you know that they understand it.

This step can help you clear up any misunderstandings before they take root. This will help you cater the discussion to what your child is not only retaining but also understanding.

Watch out for overkill. While it’s important to teach our kids about basic hygiene, some kids are prone to going overboard.

In general, parents should have a relaxed, matter-of-fact attitude towards germs and cleanliness – while washing your hands after using the bathroom should be sacrosanct, keeping your hands completely clean at all times is not only unreasonable, it also may be unhealthy.

15 Festive Christmas CDs

As was I hauling out my holiday albums one long-ago December, my younger son observed that I seem to own more Christmas CDs than most people have in their entire disc collection. I’m not too proud to admit that the pile has grown considerably since then.

Here are some favorites:

“A Charlie Brown Christmas,” Vince Guaraldi Trio: This usually cues up first, with its lovely originals “Skating” and “Christmas Time Is Here” — among others. Fans should look for the brand-new five-disc set featuring outtakes, demos and rehearsals.

“Happy Xmas,” Eric Clapton: If you’ve seen Clapton perform his “Holy Mother” with Pavarotti, you know this is not that weird a mix; “White Christmas,” “Away in a Manger” and “Silent Night” seamlessly blend the Master’s signature sound with a Christmas vibe, while rarer chestnuts include “Lonesome Christmas” and “Sentimental Moments” — plus a surreal, techno-pop take on “Jingle Bells.”

“Playboy’s Latin Jazz Christmas,” various artists: Never mind the source or the mildly salacious cover; these rip-roaring versions are so sparkling and fiery, they just might set your tree ablaze.

“The John Rutter Christmas Album”: Working with choirs and symphonies, British legend Rutter has arranged more Christmas

music than you could name. This album’s irresistible originals include the amazing “Jesus Child” and “Donkey Carol.” Lush, lovely, harmonious and reverent.

“The Christmas Song,” Nat King Cole: A gold standard in holiday music, including what may be the best-ever “O Holy Night,” plus the sadly neglected “Caroling, Caroling” and “A Cradle in Bethlehem.”

“Christmas Cheer,” Ken Navarro: Nothing but acoustic guitar and piano, arranged by cool-jazz master Navarro. Spry, silken and supremely seasonal.

“Holly Happy Days,” the Indigo Girls: Yes, the Indigo Girls have a Christmas album! — and it’s every bit as authentic, quirky and uplifting as you might imagine. A little country, a little bluegrass and a little indie — with some nice originals.

“Cool Yule,” United States Air Force Band: Audacious, brassy big-band arrangements melding songbook standards with Christmas classics: “Jing Jing Jing,” “Santanooga Choo Choo,” and “We Three Chipmunks,” which somehow combines Alvin, John Henry Hopkins and Dave Brubeck; unbelievable.

“This Is Christmas,” Luther Vandross: Infectious, under-the-mistletoe pop from the silky-smooth singer who left us too soon. What a voice!

“Personal Christmas Collection,” Andy Williams: My fave among Williams’ six Christmas records, including “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and a seldom-

heard but tender “Bells of St. Mary’s.”

“Bossa Nova Christmas,” Jack Jezzro & Friends: As a bona fide bossa junkie, I just love the gentle, sweet and swinging syncopation on these Brazilian-flavored classics. A real gem.

“The Jethro Tull Christmas Album”: The veteran British rockers — my all-time favorite band — cue up classics and originals on this beautifully engineered masterpiece. Though seven of these tunes appeared earlier, Tull laid down fresh versions for this collection; highlights include the medley “Holly Herald,” plus “We Five Kings,” honoring the quintet of musicians — in five-beat time.

“Remembering Christmas,” David Benoit: Speaking of five beats: This winter winner from the jazz-keyboard legend includes a duet in five with Dave Brubeck (of “Take Five”

fame). He also offers two Guaraldi covers and a sizzling rendition of “Do You Hear What I Hear?”

“A Renaissance Christmas,” the Waverly Consort: I bought a $3.99 cassette of this from the discount bin many years ago and simply wore it out. Mostly unfamiliar pieces, yet with an unmistakable yuletide feel — on such period instruments as recorder, viola da gamba, shawm and sackbut.

“Holiday Fanfare,” United States Coast Guard Band: Standard but impeccable renditions, with some rare picks; in particular, this is the only commercial recording of the soul-stirring Hanukkah piece “Eighth Candle,” by PA composer Steve Reisteter. If you’d like to hear that song live, come to the Repasz Band’s free holiday concert tonight: 7:30 at the CAC in Williamsport.

Formal commissioning ceremonies for the $150,000 Naval Reserve Armory on the Battery plot were held yesterday afternoon with members of Surface Division Number 59, a score of guests and several

hundred members of the community in attendance.

Four members of the Naval Reserve received awards for outstanding war deeds and nine local civilians were given citations for service to the Naval Reserve.

Captain W.L. Anderson, chief of staff of the Philadelphia Naval Base, made the

commissioning address, and asked the citizens of Williamsport to “accept the naval armory and its training activities in a spirit of preparation for the maintenance peace—not a war mongering establishment.”

Several times the former submarine commander pledged his support of the keeping of the peace, explaining that a strong navy is a guarantee against aggressor nations.

Lt. Commander Carl L. Wetter, commanding officer of the local Reserve division, accepted his orders for the operation of the armory. He also accepted the national colors from Williamsport Mayor Leo. C. Williamson. Lt. Seymour C. Branter, executive officer, ordered the

regular watch to be set.

Captain B.L. Rutt, USN, instructor at several area armories, spoke briefly of the training activities of the local division.

The Rev. Samuel G. Warr, chaplain of the division, asked the invocation and asked the benediction. The Williamsport High School Band under the direction of Osborne L. Housel, played appropriate selections before and after the ceremony. The presentation of awards was made in the assembly hall of the new armory after the commissioning ceremony. Movies of naval war action and peace time training were shown to the guests who also took advantage of the “open house” to tour the facilities of the new armory.

With just over two weeks of shopping days le until the arrival of Christmas morning, we need to take a serious look at a couple of great ideas for that hard-to-buy-for sportsman on your gi -giving list. e ideas will include items that I have used and found to be highly useful and handy for any hunter, shooter, or outdoorsman.

And, no, I am not endorsed or paid by any company I might mention!

Firearms:

Yep, nothing quite says “I love you, dearest!” like a package unwrapped on Christmas morning that yields to the unsuspecting recipient a longedfor rearm that they have daydreamed about for months and months! But there are a few things you need to keep in mind before you head out to shop for a rearm of any kind for your signi cant other, son or daughter, or your best hunting buddy. Some legal and ethical obligations apply to rearms that are not attached to other

consumer products that are given as gi s.

First and foremost, you must ensure whether or not the intended recipient can legally own a rearm where they live.

Are they old enough? In some states, there is a minimum age for owning a handgun. Might there be any type of criminal background that you are not aware of?

During the actual purchase and registration process, a background check will be accomplished that will (should) uncover any such history that would prevent legal ownership of a rearm. Be careful — it is a federal felony to knowingly transfer ownership of a rearm to someone whom you know cannot legally own one.

ere is no federal law that prohibits a gi of a rearm to a relative or friend that lives in your home state.

Pennsylvania does require a background check for private party transfer of a handgun. It might be best to check with a local rearms dealer to verify that all requirements are properly met.

Sportsman… Christmas

Consider giving a gift certificate from a local retailer rather than actually purchasing a gun and then going through the process of transferring ownership. That way, the receiver of your gift can pick out exactly what they want regarding maker, model, stock style, caliber, and overall appearance. When they actually select what they want, and they fill out the Federal Form 4473 to initiate the background check, they can properly identify themselves as “the actual buyer of the firearm.”

In the case of gifting a firearm, such as an old family heirloom or a favorite

deer rifle of yours, to a family member, there may be laws in place that require even inter-family transfers to be accomplished through a licensed retailer so that a background check may be completed. Antique firearms — those made before 1898 — are generally exempt from any such requirements, but be safe by checking with a local firearms retailer as to the proper procedure to follow.

Want a recommendation? Henry rifles are made right here in the USA. They have a nostalgic appearance, are highly prized by those who own them, are fun to shoot, and are readily

available in various models and calibers. Henry makes a quality product, and the company is very supportive of shooting sports.

Everyone I have ever talked to who owns one of the Henry rifles is very happy with the workmanship, the accuracy, and the joy of shooting it. Here again, perhaps a gift certificate that specifies a Henry rifle might be the wisest way to present the gift, allowing the recipient the final say in the exact specifications.

Looking for a “stocking-stuffer” to go along with that new firearm? A scope is usually a very welcome gift for the

owner of a new rifle or even handgun, and Leupold boasts a lifetime guarantee for their made-in-the-USA scopes.

I have owned quite a few of their optics for many years and continue to be very satisfied with their clarity and rugged construction.

Finally, ammunition for the weapon you might be gifting can always be placed under the Christmas tree or in the stocking hanging on the mantle over the fireplace. It just might be fun to watch someone open a box of ammunition and then see them wondering if there just might be a firearm to accompany the ammo!

Iknow Christmas is close at hand, but this is not a story about Santa and his reindeer swooping down on a snowy landscape to deliver presents. The red flash I’m talking about here is that of a male cardinal, and fortunately, their sightings are fairly common even into the winter months here in Pennsylvania. As we move into the winter months, a lot of my attention is focused on hunting, but I am also a lover of nature and the outdoors, including the birds that winter here in Pennsylvania. Not only do I enjoy seeing various birds throughout the winter, but as a wildlife artist, I also enjoy painting scenes featuring our local birdlife. While I enjoy photographing and painting a lot of different birds, I must admit that one of my favorites is the cardinal. The cardinal is probably one of the country’s most loved bird species,

and likely for several reasons. First, it’s very easy to pick out and identify; the brilliantly plumed red male is a standout. The female of the species is buff-brown, tinged with red on the crest, wings, and tail. Second, cardinals sing well; both males and females sing throughout the year, and researchers have recorded at least 28 songs and calls. A third reason they seemed to be liked is they are a year-round resident, even into the winter months. Since they readily feed on seeds and not just insects, they winter over well and are frequent visitors to our backyard bird feeders. Cardinals’ favorite habitat is woodland edges, thickets, brushy swamps, and even gardens, and much of that is available here in our area. The cardinal has actually been steadily expanding its range northward into areas where it was rarely seen a century ago.

A typical cardinal clutch usually contains three or four bluish-white, brown spotted eggs which hatch about 12 days after being laid. Some bird watchers have reported an interesting trait of adult nesting cardinals; apparently, their instinct to feed their young is so strong that the adults will even offer food to any other young bird in the area. I even read of one case where a cardinal nest was being used simultaneously by a pair of adult robins. Apparently, three young cardinals and four newborn robins were all reared together, and parental duties were apparently shared. Only about one fledgling in three lives long enough, about a year, to reach its full adult plumage. An estimated 40 percent of the adult birds die each year from several different causes, but despite this high turnover, the cardinals continue to prosper and expand. No doubt, one of the reasons the cardinals have sustained themselves so well is the fact that so many of us make use of bird feeders, especially during the winter months. Cardinals are more than willing to wolf down plenty of sunflower seeds at each visit to the feeder.

While I enjoy seeing all the various songbirds during the winter months, that bright red cardinal is one of my favorites. I guess it’s time to fill the feeders with sunflower seeds.

Ayellowed newspaper clipping held in place by a magnet greets me each time I open the refrigerator door. I don’t take the time to read it each time, but its presence serves as a reminder of something that should never be taken for granted or forgotten.

Its contents read:

“A Marine was taking college classes between his deployments to Afghanistan. One of his courses had a professor that was an atheist and a member of the ACLU. One day the professor shocked everyone by walking into class, looking up, and stating, “God, if you are real, I want you to come down and knock me off this platform. I will give you 15 minutes.’

“Several minutes tick by in silence. When the 15-minute time almost expired, the Marine gets up from his seat, approached the professor, and punched him in the face knocking him off the platform and out cold. The Marine simply went back to his seat.

“The professor came to, visibly shaken, and asked the Marine, ‘what the heck did you do that for?!’

“The Marine said, ‘God was busy protecting America’s military that are out protecting your right to say stupid stuff like that, so he sent me to fill in.”

To me, the message is clear. For the past

246 years, as Americans, we have had the right to hold beliefs that may differ from others, but we don’t have the right to force our own views upon those who might not agree with us.

In our all too increasingly divided society, sports still hold that very unique role of providing a commonality that allows people with diverse views to come together and cheer alongside one another regardless of their race, religion, or political persuasions.

In what may be a real stretch, that thought passed my mind as I walked to the James V. Brown Library on a chilly December Saturday morning to attend a meeting of SABR (Society of American Baseball Research). Yes, that’s the same organization that is inundating baseball fans, young and old, with overwhelming minutia pertaining to analytics, metrics, and stats that seem to view baseball as a mathematical formula rather than the game I grew up adoring from childhood.

Despite my involvement with statistics, I often wish they’d just leave the game alone, not giving a hoot about WAR and launch angles. Ah, but wait, that thought belies the very message stated above. But this day would provide much more pleasant memories.

As I walked into the library’s Lowry Room

(no connection at all), the sight of dozens of baseball-loving colleagues suddenly renewed the memories of the Hot Stove League.

In baseball, the term hot stove league dates back to the nineteenth century and refers to the sport’s off-season and a time when in small-town America, folks would gather in the winter around pot-bellied stoves, and discuss topics of the day, including their favorite baseball teams and players. It is also the time of year when players move from team to team more actively.

Baseball conversation quickly filled the room, including remembrances of Williamsport baseball pioneers Jimmy Sebring and George Washington Stovey. Sebring played in the 1903 World Series with the Pittsburgh Pirates and was the first player in World Series history to hit a home run. Stovey is widely considered to have been the best African-American baseball pitcher of the 19th century. Both men are buried in Wildwood Cemetery.

Local SABR members George Jansson and Lou Hunsinger conducted an indepth interview with Montoursville’s Tom O’Malley, covering his professional baseball career.

O’Malley was drafted as an 18-year-old by the San Francisco Giants in 1979 and began his Major League career in 1982 during Mother’s Day weekend at Shea Stadium against the Mets. He got a base hit in his first game and launched his first home run the next day with his parents in the stands. In his nine-year MLB career, he played for six teams; Giants, White Sox,

Orioles, Rangers, Expos, and Mets.

Following the 1991 season with the Mets, Tom traveled to Japan, where he enjoyed his greatest baseball success playing with the Hanshin Tigers and Yakuit Swallows. In 1995 he led the Swallows to the Japanese World Series championship hitting .307 with 31 home runs and 87 rbi. He was named the MVP of both the regular season and the World Series.

O’Malley’s popularity with Japanese fans reached a zenith when he was named Japan’s athlete of the year and asked to cut a record album singing in Japanese.

“That really surprised me because I can’t sing a lick,” he admitted. “But things turned out well, and the album sold over one million copies.”

O’Malley was raised in New Jersey and came to Montoursville as a ninth grader when his father’s work transferred him to this area. He told the assembled that the only reason the family chose to find a home in Montoursville was because they were the only school in the area that had a baseball team at the time. The rest, as they say, is history.

Assembled in that room were others whose views aren’t parallel with mine, but for two enjoyable hours, the only thing that mattered was baseball. I don’t agree with many of the changes taking place in the game I love, but I love the game, and so do those others. Indeed sports have a way of bringing people together. I only wish more common ground could be found for the many things that are dividing us these days.

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. is damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood ow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to the lack of nutrient ow.

As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die”

Figure 1: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate.

they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms.

Treatment at Twin Hills can include light therapy. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

• A ermal Image Scan to see your nerve damage

• An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being, where we will listen ...really listen…to the details of your case.

• A complete neuromuscular examination.

• Where indicated, a full set of specialized x-rays

• A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray ndings so we can start mapping out your plan to minimize your neuropathy symptoms.

Sporting Matters With Spence… ELF on the Shelf

Tis the season, folks, and instead of sharing a story on sports, I’ve decided to chime in on something that is much more important. Yes. It’s time to talk about The Elf on the Shelf. For those of you without young children, this article might help explain that creepy little butthead that has been flooding your social media pages. Jensen and I had a great run with our Elf on the Shelf. He became suspicious when he started riding the school bus. My son asked many tough questions that year. He was 12. Just kidding. I am thinking he was 9. Unfortunately, it all came to a screeching halt. Jensen was helping mom decorate and found his Elf on the Shelf in a tub. He was absolutely crushed. Jensen cried, but then it turned to rage. He accused us of being liars. He told us that we were bad

parents. It was a tough pill to swallow. Our boy grew up.

Where did all of this madness come from? Legend suggests that the elves are residents of the North Pole. But that is definitely not the case for boys and girls. They don’t live in Greenland or the Northwest Territories, either. Most of the Elves actually come from China. It’s true. Read the fine print on the packaging.

The Elves became a global phenomenon by a silly children’s picture book, “The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition,” published in 2005. Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell co-authored their epic poem and turned them into multimillionaires. Their story was rather simple but an entertaining read. I am a huge fan of their lyrics, rhythms, and rhymes.

Here are the cliff notes. A little elf

was sent from Nunavut (The North Pole) to watch over some unruly children. He served as a scout and reported directly to Santa to tell him about the youngsters’ behavior. The Elf would return that evening and take up a new position in the child’s dwelling. By hiding in a new spot each morning, the scout elf plays an ongoing game of hide and seek with the entire family. Yes. The Elf is technically a Russian spy, but he had nothing to do with collusion or fixing the presidential election.

Trumpsters are still blaming him. “There’s only one rule that you have to follow, so I will come back and be here tomorrow: Please do not touch me. My magic might go, and Santa won’t hear all I’ve seen, or I know.” #elfontheshelf. Scout elves get their magic by being named and loved. Oh, it also helps if you believe too. This Christmas magic allows the Elf to fly to and from the North Pole. But never touch an elf, for they will lose their powers. Trust me. It happened to

our neighbors. Please keep them out of the sun and try not to get them wet. And no matter how much an elf begs or cries- never feed them after midnight. Relax. It’s from another movie, kids. Gremlins. Humans are actually responsible for all of the bedlam and mischief. HIDE AND GO SEEK got boring, and now it’s controlled chaos amongst these parents. OK, I admit. I still enjoy seeing all the pictures and posts about the elves who get into trouble. My young friends are

so dang creative. Pinterest helps. And some are original. My personal favorites tend to include other action figures holding the elf hostage, and I have one pal who always uses a Barbie. I would explain in more detail, but this is a family newspaper. Oh. It has gotten rather raunchy. But a few are simply hilarious.

Our elves are alive and are still trending. It’s one of my favorite holiday traditions. Keep posting those photos. Oh, the memories. Merry Christmas. Cheers.
