The hustle and bustle of the holiday season are in full swing across the West Branch Valley. That means it’s time for me to go to work, ringing the bell for The Salvation Army. I’m sure most of you know the story, but for our new readers and maybe those that have forgotten, Dave Sechler was one of the most selfless folks I have ever met. He would do anything for anybody whenever asked. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for whoever he was speaking with.

Like so many others, I got to know Dave through basketball and his taking care of the gym for The Salvation Army Williamsport. He worked for the good of the organization for decades in about every way possible. He especially loved Christmastime, and I can still envision him ringing the bell with that big smile, wishing me a Merry Christmas. So, it was shortly after his passing I came up with the idea for a Red Kettle Remembrance of Dave. It was the best way I could think of to continue his work in the name of good for The Salvation Army. If you would like to read more about Dave and how this began, my columns from 6/4/14,

So Long Sech, and 12/10/14, Red Kettle Remembrance, are posted at webbweekly.com.

It goes without saying I’m a big believer in all the great work The Salvation Army does. It’s important to me that the donations made are used locally to help so many in a multitude of ways; some might just need a helping hand with a holiday meal. Some may need help with childcare or Christmas gifts for their children. Some may be at the lowest point of their life and need someone to turn to. I think Dave epitomized their mission to simply help anyone who needs helping.

So, if you would like to help folks from all walks of life, here is a way to double your giving. I have a Red Kettle set up in the front of my office; you can either stop to donate in person or mark the envelope “Remembering Dave” and drop it in the mail to Webb Weekly, 280 Kane Street, Suite 2, South Williamsport, PA 17702. My staff will make sure it gets in the kettle.

For everyone who drops by to contribute and maybe have a little conversation, we’ll have a Webb Weekly mug full of Christmas candy for your effort. A heartfelt thank you

to the Salvation Army’s Williamsport staff, board members, and especially the volunteers for their amazing efforts.

The Red Kettle donations help to fund programs all year long. Webb Weekly will match the first $5,000 In donations. Last year together, we contributed over $11,000 with our Red Kettle Remembrance.

Big Buck Down

I love to see pictures featuring the family tradition of hunting in Penns Woods. Lou Becker, pictured with Colton, Stella, and Paxton, took this tank of a buck toward the end of the fall archery season. The 7-point weighed in at nearly 200 pounds. It’s worth noting it was a mainframe 8 that had recently broken off a tine.

What a great moment the family will remember forever. I’m sure there will be future pictures provided by dad’s little hunters in training.

The number of bucks being entered into our 15th Annual Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest really picked up with the temperatures turning colder.

The absolute monsters being entered in our contest each year just seem to get bigger. That being said, Uncle Ron’s

contest is really three events wrapped into one. There will be four Prizes awarded for the top-scoring bucks based on Sierra Club International standards. Everyone who takes the time to check their buck into the contest is entered into a random rifle drawing. And on behalf of every hunter entered, Webb Weekly makes a donation to help fight MS.

Full contest details can be found on page 51, complete with a photo of the “Lingle Buck,” which scored 212.7 SCI and was the monster of them all in 2021.

A tip of my Webb Weekly orange hunting cap with the American Flag to our contest partners at Poust Taxidermy, Sauers Trading, and Stoltzfus Venison Processing.

Please, let’s all be safe out there. God Bless America.

So last week I put a call out on Facebook to help find Jimmy a buck picture to include in his article. Turns out, we ended up with a couple of extras that I didn’t have room for on Jimmy’s page. Since I feel kinda bad Jimmy was only able to include one in his article, I figured I would include the others in mine.

I’m by no means a hunter — that’s far too much time outside — but that’s doesn’t mean

I can’t appreciate a nice buck. Thanks so all my friends who shared their deer with me! I love that y’all all come through for me when I need it.

The first pic come courtesy of my friend Shanna. She sent me her cousin Cole’s pic. Cole Shirey is 12 and from Cogan Station. He took down a nice 7-point, which just happens to be his biggest buck yet!

Next up is John Miller and his son Ethan. They are from Selinsgrove and managed to take down a pair of nice 7-points during archery season!

Once again, thanks for sharing with me!

Christmas Fun

Well y’all, it’s one of my favorite times of year! The Blaise Alexander Christmas Fun Coloring Contest is in full swing!

Thanksgiving is officially behind us, so now it’s time to move fully into the Christmas season! By the time you read this, my tree will (hopefully) be up, and decorating has already commenced! OK, well technically I just bought new Christmas doormats, but

that counts!

Nothing says Christmas around the Webb Weekly office like when The Blaise Alexander Christmas Coloring Contest begins! We have entries coming in left and right, and our elves are hard at work. If you haven’t heard, every year I bring in elves, straight from the North Pole, to help me out. They are helping judge the entries, along with keeping them sorted by age group, and compiling the list of names to be published the week of Christmas!

We once again brought in a whole new batch of the little pointy-eared imps this year, and they are little overwhelmed with the Christmas fun. I was worried they’d get caught up in all the snow in Buffalo, but they made it! I’ve already caught them headed toward Candy Cane Lane and I heard that they are looking for a ride to Knoebels for Christmas Through the Grove. I also heard that they were super impressed with the Downtown Christmas Parade last week. Cocoa GlitterCakes, Merry FizzyCheer, and Happy JingleDoodle, are easily distracted so if you see them out and about, please point them back to our office! I’ve found dangling a Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake in front of them like a carrot helps to keep them on task. Obviously, Cocoa can be swayed with really good hot chocolate!

This is the 2nd week for the coloring contest, so you have plenty of time to get your entries in. We have LOTS of great prizes from Flyworld, English Model Railroad, Elery Nau, Hooplas, Treasure Castle Playland, Harder Sporting Goods, AMC Theaters, Dairy Queen, Trout Pond Park and Outback Roos! If you need another copy of the contest, check out our Facebook page. It is pinned to the top of the page so you can download and print it out if you need to! The page is also up on our website in a printable form if you need more copies! You can drop them off in the office or mail them to:

Lycoming County Mountain Bike Team Helps Students

We live in an area with many hills and mountainous terrain. It is ideal for those who enjoy the sport of mountain biking. One local or ganization helps to promote and develop that sport in this area. That organization is the Lycoming County Mountain Bike Team, which includes students from Ly coming and surrounding Coun ties and has just completed its seventh season in the Pennsylva nia Interscholastic Cycling League (PICL). The league is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).

Coaches Jeremy Rusczyk and Joe Tavani started the Lycoming County team in the winter of 2016 when Mike Kuhn (PICL League Director) gathered a group of

mountain bikers for a NICA Lead ers Summit near Philly. The vision was to start a high school moun tain bike league and make moun tain biking a high school sport option for student-athletes across the state. That inaugural season saw 23 teams with around 300 students competing in five events.

The league has grown quite a bit since then, with 68 teams and 1312 student-athletes in 2022.

Area student-athletes in grades 6th through 12th are building their biking skills by making tech nical turns, climbing and descend ing hills, and going over obstacles, all to have fun and become profi cient on their bikes. Each member has the opportunity to participate regardless of skill level; all that is needed is a bike and a helmet.

Practices start in July and incor porate several practices per week, plus fun rides on Saturdays. Stu

dents practice drills to work on body positioning, braking, turning, and all aspects of riding skillfully on mountain trails. Students also learn trail etiquette and give back to the community by doing many hours of trail work. The league has a trail stewardship program called Teen Trail Corps, and the Lycoming Composite team contributed 164.5 hours of trail work this past year. These hours of trail work were completed in the Loyalsock and Tiadaghton State Forests and Williamsport Water Authority. Statewide, the league’s Teen Trail Corps hours totaled over 6,300 hours of trail stewardship in 2021.

According to Coach Joe Tavani, while the students learn how to mountain bike, they develop as people as well. They learn resilience, following rules, understanding etiquette on the racecourse and trails, and important subconscious skills such as focus, coordination, and attention, all

while having fun.

Chrissy Sanders, mother of team members Izzy and Maddie, told Webb Weekly, “I want to thank the Team for helping my girls feel capable and confident by teaching them new bike skills but, more importantly, mentoring them on how to work through hard things and find joy in what they have accomplished.”

Student-athlete Landon Earnest states, “What I like about the Team and NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) is that everyone is very welcoming and everyone participates.”

The Team has dedicated volunteer Coaches and parent support.

To grow the Team, STEP AmeriCorps is assisting the Team with Outreach and working with area school districts to get “more kids on bikes.”

County Hall Corner: “Even One of These Deaths is Too Many”

If the birth of a child is one of the happiest moments a mother and family can experience, the death of such a child in the first year of life would have to be one of the most horrible events imaginable. Tragically, each year there are about 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths that occur in the United States. A study in 2020 by the Center for Disease Control found that 905 of these deaths were due to acciden tal suffocation and strangulation in bed. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is one of the leaders in this dreadful category. But not in Lycoming County — and not by coincidence or luck — but rather through diligence and hard work. Over a decade ago, Coroner Chuck Kiessling realized that these ‘crib deaths’ could be virtually eliminated if the bed, bedding, and infant positioning were safe. Thus, he set himself and his team to make it happen. And the results have been amazing.

The Lycoming County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, November 17th, featured two proclamations on behalf of the Cribs for Kids Program for Infant Safe Sleep Month. One was from the county commissioners, and the other

was from PA State Representative Joe Hamm. This was a wonderful gesture on the part of Representative Hamm as he acknowledged that his proclamation was a heritage inherited from his pre decessor Garth Everett. All this pomp and circumstance was highlighting the importance of this action. It is very, very rare that two proclamations are given. This project has become one of the most inspiring programs in the county and certainly deserves it.

Coroner Kiessling initially acknowl edged the program and quickly deferred to his administrative assistant and assis tant coroner Kathryn Nickles who heads up the project. She acknowledged that

COUNTY HALL

the county coordinates its efforts with “Safe Kids PA,” a statewide organization that exists to reduce injuries and deaths of children through community education. For the past fourteen years, the county coroner’s office has provided hundreds of full-size cribs and pack ’n play units to needy families. The results have been extremely encouraging. Lycoming County has gone three years without a crib death.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is also (finally!) on board with addressing crib deaths with the passage on November 12th of the Safe Sleep for Babies Act. This legislation prohibits the manufacture and sale of crib bumpers and inclined infant sleep products. Kathryn Nickles noted this in her presentation to the commissioners and also strongly emphasized that those using these products (even the mesh ones) should stop using these immediately. There have been a number of deaths linked to these items, which is what motivated this legislation.

Assistant Coroner Nickles noted the progress that has been made in this tragic area. She emphasized that just cribbing alone was not the answer. It might seem old school, but warm, comfortable sleepwear with a tightly fitted sheet around the child lying on their back is still the safest place for them. Follow the

ABCs — Babies are safest when they are: 1. Alone, 2. on their Back, and 3. in a Crib.

Nickles noted that seven babies had died since 2019 due to unsafe sleep environments. Her plea resonated with the entire audience — “Even one of these deaths is too many.”

There are lots of partners in this program, including UPMC, Geisinger, Expectations, the WIC program, the PA Department of Health, and others.

Backyard Broadcasting provides two public service announcements a month.

The Lycoming County Coroner’s Office chairs the local Safe Kids organization, which is a local partner of Safe Kids Worldwide and rides under the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition. Safe Kids is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing child injuries and deaths in our community.

It is strictly funded through grants and donations and has provided Lycoming County with not just cribs and pack ’n plays but also car seats, bike helmets, carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors, and more.

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. is damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood ow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to the lack of nutrient ow.

As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die”

Figure 1: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate.

they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms.

Treatment at Twin Hills can include light therapy. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

Cowboy Boots for Winter

oots are ubiquitous for winter, and while quality snow boots are worth the investment for the harshest weather, a person can’t live on snow boots alone during these colder months. And why should one deprive oneself of a robust boot season when there are so many types of boots out there? You got your rain boots, Chelsea boots, duck boots, Timberland boots, combat boots, knee-high boots, over-the-knee boots; really, there’s a boot for everyone. This winter, I’m thinking of trying a boot I’ve never tried before. Just to shake things up a bit here over the holidays and into the new year, she’s thinking of stepping out in cowboy boots!

popping up in trend forecasts, magazines, and online, and I’ve noticed that western boots have taken on new forms, shapes, and colors. Plus, there are so many ways to style cowboys; they’re not just for jeans and work shirts anymore. Here are a few pairs I’m considering and what to wear with them.

I know it’s a shocker that there’s a shoe I haven’t at least tried on, but it’s true. I know, I’m a fabulous, stylishly adventurous, thriving 40-somethingyear-old woman, and I’ve never worn cowboy boots; hard to imagine! Well, I’ve been seeing cowboy boots

First, the Coconuts Telluride Western Cowboy Boot from DSW in taupe and ivory is a neutral twotoned, classically embroidered pair with a 2.5” slanted stacked heel. Going with a more minimalist color allows for more versatility in the styling. A lighter, as opposed to a darker pair, can bring a bit of vibrancy to an otherwise standard outfit. A starkly toned western boot is also a great complement to holiday outfitting. I can see a pair like this with a corduroy skirt and a festive sweater. Or, to contrast, an all-black look of leggings and a turtleneck topped with a long

dress coat.

Next are the Leena Cowboy Boots from Urban Outfitters that have more of a hipster vibe, with the dark green color and a mid-calf shaft. This pair can be worn with a cropped wool trouser or a plaid or tweedy pant paired with a blouse and blazer to create a bit of contrast in a workwear look. For something more casual, you could tuck in a slouchy pant leg, then layer a striped tee and cardigan to give a weekend look a bit of cowboy twist.

For a more traditional take, there are the Heritage R Toe StretchFit boots from Ariat rendered in full-grain leather with beautiful stitching that come in classic colors of distressed brown, black deer tan, or rosy red. Play off the rugged style of a more traditional boot and wear it with something flirty and feminine. A floral maxi dress with tights is a fun contrast to the menswear-inspired western boot, and you can lean into

the western feel with a shearling suede style coat to keep toasty and look lovely. Or wear this boot like you would knee-high boots with skinny jeans or above-the-knee skirts and dresses.

On the flip side of tradition is the Public Desire Rodeo Ruched Cowboy boot available on Asos. This graphic, black and white, knee-high shoe definitely makes a statement with its wing-like emborder shaft and higher heel. Even though it’s named for the rodeo, these are not the boots to go mucking about the stock pens. Instead,

play up the edgy aesthetic with fauxleather pants, a long-sleeved fitted tee, or bodysuit topped with a plaid shacket or blanket-style coat.

These are just four of the boots that have piqued my interest for the winter. There are so many great versions of cowboy boots out there in various colors, materials, and heights. Whether you are traditional or more modern, western style boots are versatile enough to pair with everything from dresses to jeans to trousers and slouchy sweaters in the colder months ahead. Yeehaw!

It was the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

I wanted to spend the day in the kitchen to help my week along after

I got home from church. So much to do and so little time, and I knew it would benefit me to just get a jump start on things.

I started by cutting up the Italian bread I had bought and letting it sit a few days to stale perfectly for my stuffing. I had three loaves to tackle, but it didn’t take long. Chris, my husband, was in the kitchen with me at this point, mixing up the pancakes for breakfast. He had the Blackstone fired up in our garage and thought making pancakes and bacon out there would be

much easier. Then I could continue to do what I needed to do in the kitchen. Plus, he is way better at making pancakes than me. Hey, I’ll admit that. Chris makes the prettiest little pancakes. Mine, well, they wouldn’t win an award or anything. I love when my honey makes his pancakes.

I took care of the scrambled eggs while slowly starting to work on chopping up many veggies for my cheeseburger soup that would be our dinner for Thanksgiving Eve, so I could cook all day Wednesday and have dinner heating up in the crockpot.

Kenzy was busy setting the table for me when she got home from Sunday school.

“Momma, can I decorate the table pretty?”

I always enjoy putting a candle on the table, and I like decorating it cute for my family on holidays. Kenzy wants it decorated for every meal, which I am totally OK with.

“Absolutely, baby. You know I love it when you set the table so pretty!”

Kenz always does such a cute job and likes to surprise me.

“Don’t look, Momma, OK? I want to make it really special,” she will say.

This fall, she would go outside and find bright-colored leaves to place around the table and always lay a pumpkin pattern napkin down with a candle in the center of it.

She would also grab pumpkin decor from her room. It was so sweet. I wasn’t allowed to throw those leaves out for weeks. Literally. They were too pretty to throw out from what she said, so they laid in one of my primitive stands after breakfast that morning as added fall decor to our home.

I secretly chucked the dried leaves when I decorated for Thanksgiving a week later.

As we set all the food out, I took a peek at the table. She had a Thanksgiving napkin all spread out in the middle, with little

things from her room around the napkin and a candle lit in the middle. After we sat down and before we prayed, I told Kenzy how nice the table looked and thanked her. It was our last Sunday using our pumpkin mugs, but she wanted to use a smaller scarecrow mug for her hot tea that morning. I told her I didn’t care, but they were much smaller than our pumpkin mugs. Honestly, it was a perfect size for an eight-year-old. Her hot tea sat steaming as we held hands for prayer.

I started passing out the pretty pancakes that Christopher did a smashing job on and noticed what little things Kenzy had

on the napkin in the center of the table and how she placed them. I laughed and said, “Kenz! I love how you picked each item for each person and sat them in front of our seating.” My husband took a look, and he started to laugh too. Ty looked up with this blank stare, then shook his head with a smile.

I had a cute little glittery poodle ornament from off her Christmas tree we had gotten out for in her room. She was placed to look right at me and sparkled from the sun hitting her on the table. Chris, well, he had a fire dalmatian wearing a Santa hat ornament also from her tree. Grammy

Marlene just bought her both of these at Cracker Barrel a few days prior when she spent the weekend with her. Kenzy had her little elf we call Charlie Jr., because he looks just like our Christmas Elf Charlie, who comes to visit us every Christmas, just way smaller. He sat looking right at Kenzy. Finally, Tyler. Boy, did she pick a special one out for her brother! Haha! It was one of my old ornaments that was a Wendy’s kids’ meal thing back in 2000. A big Grinch head that has a yellow ribbon at the top to be able to hang it on your tree. You used to be able to pull stickers out of it.

There it laid flat on the table, looking straight at Ty. We all started to giggle after I pointed this all out and asked her why brother got the Grinch.

“Because Tyler can be mean sometimes!” she explained.

This child, I can’t with her. Ty thought it was funny, though, and just shook his head.

I mean, he is a typical older brother with a little sister. Kenzy wants her big brother to play with her all the time. Most days, he is so sweet to her, but there are a few days he’s “too cool” to play with his little sister, and Kenz gets sad. I knew it wasn’t because he didn’t like Christmas. That child had his room decorated for Christmas the week before Halloween! His room legit looks like the North Pole. No joke. We don’t play in this family when it comes to Christmas. But, the fact that his sister gave him the Grinch ornament just had us cracking up at breakfast, and I told the kids thanks for giving me the perfect column for next

week to write about.

We cleaned up from breakfast so I could continue my afternoon in the kitchen. I had to start making three out of ten pumpkin rolls for the week, finishing my cheeseburger soup, making ham sliders for Monday night dinner ,and a pan of sticky buns was on my hit list before our Sunday movie night. It was a perfect day, and the day before, my momma had spent all day in her kitchen making three bushels of applesauce. Is it ever a bad day spending time in the kitchen preparing and making food for the people you love? Not for me.

Mini Quiches

• Pillsbury Mini Pie Crust (please don’t judge me that it’s not from scratch)

• 1 cup milk

• 4 eggs, slightly beaten

• 1/4 tsp pepper

• 1/2 lb chopped baked ham or 1/2 lb. cooked sausage

• 1/4-1/2 cup Extra Sharp Cheese shredded

This past Sunday, the Chris tian world entered the sea son of Advent. Advent pre pares us for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ in much the same way Lent prepares us to re member His suffering, death, and res urrection.

While Advent is associated with Christmas, its greater purpose is to serve as an annual reminder of the imminent and glorious return of Jesus

Christ. Jesus spoke very clearly of His return in Matthew 24. I strongly en courage you to read what He said be cause you need to be aware and ready. It could happen at any moment. In fact, He lets us know that it will hap pen when we least expect it. It could happen before you finish reading this article.

Here are the last words of the Bi ble, “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen.

Come, Lord Je sus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.” Revela tion 22:20-21. The entire Bible story concludes with Jesus letting us know He is com ing soon.

During Advent, I will be sharing four articles about some very special gifts we receive from heaven. The first gift is hope. The return of Jesus Christ is our greatest hope. The anticipation of that glorious moment has kept believers moving forward with anticipation and joy for over 2,000 years – even in the midst of persecution and tragedy. When you boil it all down, there are two truths that energize the believer with hope: the imminent return of Je sus and the promise of eternal life. We, humans, know instinctively that death should not be a part of our story. That’s because God created us to live forever – and through Jesus Christ, we can be restored to God’s original intent. For the believer, death

is nothing more than falling asleep here and waking up in heaven. Lis ten to Jesus in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have ev erlasting life.” That everlasting life is the greatest hope of all believers – and if Jesus should return before we die, well, all the better!

To some people, such hope sounds crazy. For them, the grave is the end of the story. Well, to me, the grave be ing the end sounds crazy. Everything in me knows that the grave is not the end – it is the beginning – it is simply the launching pad to eternity.

Billy Graham lived with that confi dent hope, and he died with it too. He told people all the time, “Some day you will read in the newspaper that Billy Graham has died. Don’t believe a word of it. For in that moment, I will be more alive than I have ever been.”

We live in a hard world. The wise man summed up human existence on earth in one word: meaningless. See Eccle siastes 1. Life was so hard on Job he wished he had never been born. Job 3. Jesus warned us that we would be hat

ed by everyone because of Him. Mat thew 10:22. Paul’s description of the human condition is awful. Romans 3:9-18. He also warned us that every one who follows Jesus will be perse cuted. Timothy 2:12-13. John pointed out that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. I John 5:19. The enemy is unleashing the full fury of sin as he prowls around, looking for people to devour. I Peter 5:8. The innocent and vulnerable are abused and exploited. The world is dark and filled with a sense of foreboding – that something bad is about to happen. For people in darkness and despair, it’s no different today than it was just prior to Jesus’ birth. The prophecy of Isaiah is as true today as it was when he wrote it and when Matthew quoted it, “The people living in darkness have seen a great light, on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2 and Matthew 4:16. People today are living in deep darkness. Maybe you are too. My Advent prayer is that the hope of the resurrection and eternal life will provide the dawn of light for you to

day. May hope pierce the darkness and fill you with a profound sense that something good is about to hap pen – and that the best is yet to come. May your face be turned upward, and may the warmth of God’s light chase all of the shadows of fear and doubt from your mind. May your heart beat a little faster as you wait in eager an ticipation for what God is going to do next. May hope be the gift of heaven you open first during this Advent sea son. That is my prayer for you. Amen. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Every year, thousands of athletes around the world compete in high adrenaline competitions called lumberjack competitions or timber sports. On a regional level, competitions are organized by the Pennsylvania Professional Lumberjack Organization (PPLO). North Central PA is honored that local athlete Dominic Ruckle took home this year’s Ax-

eman of the Year award for the PPLO.

I was able to connect with Dominic for an interview to discuss his big win and what’s next.

Dave - Dominic, tell me about your award-2022 Axeman of the Year.

Dominic - The Axeman of the Year award is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Professional Lumberjack Organization (PPLO), which hosts and assists in running over a dozen lumberjack sports events held at various fairs and

festivals throughout Pennsylvania. This award is meant to honor and provide an incentive to the athlete who has improved the most over the past year. All athletes in the PPLO are considered for the award, and it is based upon performance alone. I guess I did well enough over the season to receive the award.

Dave - Describe lumberjack competition. What are the events, and what equipment is used?

Dominic - Lumberjack Competitions are celebrations of the logging industry from many years ago. We have chainsaw racing and even modified or unlimited class hot saw racing, but the events I enjoy the most are the ones that involve the use of the axe, and the crosscut saw. The axes and crosscut saws are not the types of axes or hand saws you would see at a hardware store.

You have to find racing axes and racing crosscut saws. There are only a few makers of these specialized types of equipment in the world, and these axes and saws are not cheap.

All the athletes race against one another on wood that is provided by the organization or the fair/festival, and everything is a timed sprint race. Who can chop the block the fastest, or who can saw through the log the quickest. You get better at the racing by training in the events you do at the contest.

There are three axe disciplines — the underhand chop, the springboard chop, and the standing block chop. The underhand chop involves standing on top of the standing block, which is simulating the felling of a tree in the woods. For the springboard, we use two boards to ascend a nine-foot pole to chop a block affixed at the top. It’s also referred to as the lumberjack scaffolding system. The standing block chop is pretty much just like it sounds. A block is placed on a stand, and competitors chop through it in the fastest time possible.

The saw disciplines consist of the twoman, the one-man, and the jack-and-

jill. We also have an axe-throwing event which is quite a bit different than what you would find at the axe-throwing bars — the target is farther away, the axe is heavier and larger, and the handle is longer. There are also events such as peavey log rolling where we use a peavy or cant hook to maneuver the log through a course in the quickest time.

The sport is worldwide. As I understand it, 27 different countries have events similar to what we do in PPLO. Some events are much larger, too, and the prize purses are much larger as well.

Dave - How did you get into lumberjack competition?

Dominic - I was a wrestler early in

life. I even rode rodeo bulls. I enjoyed the challenge. I am an athlete that is always looking to find hidden potential in myself. I have a friend and co-worker, Sean Frantz, who was involved with the PPLO. I went out and watched one of his events when I moved back to PA from Colorado. After watching it, I had to try it. I haven’t stopped since. It’s addicting, it’s fun, and it’s athletic.

Dave - Why do you enjoy competing?

Dominic - We all do what we do for different reasons. I’m an athlete. I also enjoy traveling. I’ve only been involved in this sport for about a year now, and I’ve traveled to events in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and New York. As I understand it, there are lumberjack sporting events in over 30 different states and four of the provinces in Canada. The events in Australia and New Zealand primarily involve the axe, and I really hope to get down there and compete someday.

Dave - What are your competition goals?

Dominic - My competitive goal is to be the best version of myself that I can be. At first, it was to beat the people that mentored me, and I did that this summer. Now, the goals are a bit broader-to travel to larger events and to see where I stand against the best in the sport.

Dave - Who do you think were your

biggest influences in this sport?

Dominic - My mentors that helped me get started in the sport and really guided me in a great direction. Arden Cogar Jr. of Charleston, WV; Joshua Wilson of Morgantown, WV. My co-worker, Sean Frantz, was the first lumberjack to show me how to chop with a racing axe. Also, Bill Simcox of Farrandsville, PA, who is a long-time competitor, helps me train and become a better timber sports athlete.

Dave - Is there anything else you want to add?

Dominic - One of my mentors, is 53 years old and is still at or near the top of

his game. There are even guys in their 60s that are hard to beat in some events. Age is a just a number doing lumberjack sports. You come to a PPLO event; you’ll see competitors as young as their early teens and as old as 80. It’s about what you put into it. This is something I can see myself doing for a long time and something I can see myself teaching a child because it’s a sport that is not only healthy, but it’s simply great stress relief.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu, or influenza, affected about nine million people last flu season (October through May). This is presumably due to COVID-19 mitigation efforts such as masking and social distancing that have since become less pressurized. While

you may feel more at ease this year, it is important to stay diligent against respiratory illnesses. So far for this year’s flu season, there have been 2.8 million illnesses, about 23,000 hospitalizations, and 1,300 deaths that have been caused by the virus.

What is Influenza?

Any time a person feels ill around this time of year, they usually understand their symptoms to fall under a flu diagnosis no matter how mild or severe

their symptoms may be. However, it is important to know what the flu technically entails in addition the usual symptom of a general unwell feeling.

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a virus that attacks the lungs. It is often confused with the common cold or stomach flu. Symptoms include fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, headaches, sore throat, runny nose, and a persistent cough.

The stomach flu is more related to digestive issues and challenges the ability to keep food down. Vomiting, pain in the abdomen, and diarrhea are symptoms more consistent with the stomach flu.

The common cold features symptoms similar to influenza, but has the additional issues of runny noses, sneezing, and a sore throat. Both the flu and the cold can have symptoms that could linger for more than a week.

Flu Vaccination

The best way to keep the flu at bay is to receive the vaccination every year. The influenza virus mutates over time, and the newest version of the vaccine reflects these changes to best protect our communities.

By receiving the vaccination annually, you are greatly lowering your risk

for contracting the flu. If you do contract the virus, the vaccine typically lessens the effect of flu symptoms and complications.

Tips for Getting Vaccinated

It is recommended that anyone six months of age and older should get a flu shot around the beginning of flu season (about September). However, this is not a deadline, and you can still get the shot at any time.

The first step to help make sure the vaccination process runs smoothly can begin with a conversation with your doctor. While the flu shot is very safe for most people, you can go over any hesitations or concerns you may have before receiving the vaccination.

Ensure that you are well rested and that you remain calm. Vaccinations may cause side effects like pain at the site of the injection, muscle aches, headache, or fatigue, and getting more sleep can improve your body’s response to the flu shot.

To learn more about the flu vaccination and where to get vaccinated, go to UPMC.com/Flu.

Cooking foods at home is one of the simplest ways to gain greater control over personal health. Cooking at home is the easiest way to know precisely what you’re putting into your body each day. Cooking your own meals also enables you to customize recipes so they align with any dietary restrictions or personal preferences you may have.

According to a 2021 survey by the consumer market research firm Hunter, 71 percent of people in the United States plan to continue cooking

more at home after the pandemic ends. Increased creativity and confidence in the kitchen, as well as the fact that cooking at home helps to save money and enables one to heat healthier, is driving the ongoing increase in dining in.

When cooking at home, cooks can consider various tips to make meals that much healthier.

• Increase fiber intake. Fiber improves bowel regularity and helps a person feel full between meals. High fiber foods also help stabilize blood sugar

levels. Two servings of fibrous foods at each meal and an additional fiber-rich snack each day can ensure your body is getting the fiber it needs.

• Slow down eating. The pace at which a person eats a meal can affect his or her overall health. Healthline reports that fast eaters are more likely to eat more and have higher body mass indexes than slow eaters.

• Choose whole grains. Choosing whole grain breads or cereals over refined grains can make for a more nutritious diet. Whole grains are linked to a reduced risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

• Swap Greek yogurt for other varieties. Greek yogurt contains up to twice as much protein as regular yogurt, providing roughly 10 grams per 3.5 ounces. Protein along with fiber helps a person feel fuller longer, which can manage appetite and reduce overeating. Greek yogurt also can replace mayonnaise or sour cream in certain recipes.

• Add a vegetable to every meal. Vegetables are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Plus, they tend to be high in antioxidants that strengthen the immune system. Increase vegetable intake by eating vegetables with every meal.

• Choose healthy fats. While a person should minimize the amount of oils

and other fats used during the cooking process, when it’s necessary for a recipe, select the best fat possible. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat that is packed with antioxidant polyphenols. It is considered a heart-healthy oil, and it may promote a healthy brain and memory function.

• Cut out sweetened beverages. Sodas and other sweetened drinks are leading sources of added sugar in diets. Opting for water or naturally sweetened fruit juices can improve overall health. Small dietary changes can add up to big health benefits.

“The Book of Phobias & Manias: A History of Obsession” by Kate Summerscale c.2022, Penguin $20.00 256 pages

You don’t know whether to run or scream in fear.

Or maybe both. When you see whatever it is that scares you to the point that you’re a babbling puddle of mess, well, it’s no longer a fight-orflight thing – it’s just plain flight. Funny, you’re normally big and brave, fearless to

the end, so read “The Book of Phobias & Manias” by Kate Summerscale. See what other scary things are out there...

More than 235 years ago, Benjamin Rush, one of our Founding Fathers, started a fad for naming the things that Colonial humans feared and focused on. Then, Rush officially named eighteen phobias, including fears of ghosts and rats; and twenty-six manias.

Over the years, says Summerscale, other fears and focuses have been added to Rush’s list but the fact remains that manias and phobias are mostly cultural constructs that indicate how we consider ourselves, what attracts us and what

repels us.

Even at times when a “phobia” isn’t really a phobia, this is serious stuff: roughly ten percent of women and five percent of men have a phobia, and one in eight of them will receive help for it. If you don’t have a phobia, fear not: research shows that you can get one through conditioning, or by exposure to someone with a heavy-duty phobia of their own.

Mania is a little trickier, Summerscale says, because today’s medicine has categorized such things as hoarding, obsessivecompulsive disorder, addiction, and so on. Still, she lists some: The Count on Sesame Street had arithmomania. Tulipomania is said to have once made folks extremely wealthy. And klazomania might make you scream.

Germophobes suffer from mysophobia but probably not from ablutophobia, the latter of which would’ve been a problem during a pandemic. John Wayne Gacy likely single-handedly boosted the number of coulrophobes. George Orwell’s musophobia caused a minor (but violent) battle, and Alfred Hitchcock admitted to one rather unique fear. Homophobia, it should be noted, is

not a real phobia. And you won’t believe how 1930s scientists cruelly induced a baby to have doraphobia.

Don’t reach behind that cabinet without looking first. Don’t go into the attic at night. Don’t touch that! And whatever you do, don’t miss “The Book of Phobias & Manias.”

There’s sometimes a fine line between humor and horror, and author Kate Summerscale walks it with authenticity and a delightful delivery that’ll make you want more. Here, you’ll learn about all those things that make you cringe, recoil, or wrinkle your nose in disgust, why they make you jumpy, and how you can be braver. You’ll get clues to solve the mystery of your newest obsession. You’ll see that you’re not alone, that you might have a historical partner with skin-crawling terror. And you’ll feel better about the things that make you want to run: at least you’re not afraid of this or that or that, either.

“The Book of Phobias & Manias” is a serious book, seriously fun, and good for anyone age 15-to-adults. Look for it. It’ll make you scream in delight.

Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society will present as its holiday exhibit, Shopping During the Holidays: The L.L. Stearns Department Store,” from Saturday, December 3, 2022 until Saturday, January 21, 2023. The public is invited to a free preview of the exhibit Friday, December 2, from 7:00 until 8:30pm. The exhibit continues through Saturday, January 21, 2023.

Thanks to the generosity of the late Nancy Stearns and her four daughters, the Museum is able to present this exhibit. The Community Room will be stocked with memorabilia from the downtown department store which flourished from 1889 to 1994. Among the items on display will be the bell which swung over shoppers’ heads and is being ridden by a little girl (or elf?), the portrait of L.L. Stearns,

photographs, boxes and shopping bags, merchandise, advertisements, clothing and a few surprises! Many of the items donated by the Stearns family have not been seen since the store closed.

In conjunction with the holiday exhibit, the Museum will be holding an ornament sale on Saturday, December 3, from 11:00am until 4:00pm and with special hours on Sunday, December 4, from 1:00pm-4:00pm. There will be no charge to view the exhibit during these times. The ornaments have been created by some of the most talented regional artists. The artists participating this year include: Lisa Bitler (pottery), Amanda Emig (puffy foam snowmen, illustrated wildlife and farmlife animals), Karen Mothersbaugh (wire trees), Deb Parsons (lampworked glass), Theresa Phillips (gourds, fur), Victoria Stetts (Japanese kusudama blossom balls & origami cranes,

Mike Swanger (blown glass), Becky Thomas (pine cones & pottery) and Catheal Weiser (pysanky eggs). Catheal Weiser is the featured artist and has decorated her eggs with some of the details from the

Store bell. Many people remember the bell from their days of shopping at the store which was located on Pine Street in downtown Williamsport. The museum, located at 858 West Fourth Street, Williamsport, is open Tuesdays through Fridays, 9:30am until 4:00pm and Saturdays, 11:00am until 4:00pm. Admission is charged. Food, drinks, gifts and time with family make the holidays a merry occasion for people across the country. However, all that celebrating can sometimes become a distraction from maintaining heart health.

In fact, the joys of the season can become marred for many as research shows an uptick in cardiac events and heart attack deaths during the final week of December. According to a study published in the American Heart

Association journal, “Circulation,” more cardiac deaths occur on Dec. 25 than any other day of the year, followed by the second largest number on Dec. 26 and third largest on Jan. 1.

“The holidays are a busy, often stressful time for many of us,” said American Heart Association Chief Clinical Science Officer Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D., M.S., FAHA. “Routines are disrupted. We may tend to eat and drink more and exercise and relax less. We’re getting too little sleep and

experiencing too much stress. While we don’t know exactly why there are more deadly heart attacks during this time, it’s important to be aware that these factors can snowball, increasing the risk for a deadly cardiac event.”

Being aware of this annual phenomenon and taking a few important, heart-healthy steps can help save lives. Consider these tips from Dr. Elkind and the experts at the American Heart Association.

* Know symptoms and take action. Heart attack signs vary in men and women, but it’s important to recognize them early and call 9-1-1 for help. The sooner medical treatment begins, the better chances of survival and preventing heart damage.

* Celebrate in moderation. Eating healthfully during the holidays doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself. There are ways to eat smart, such as by limiting sodium intake and looking for small, healthy swaps so you continue to feel your best while eating and drinking in moderation.

* Practice goodwill toward yourself. Make time to take care of yourself during this busy season. Reading a favorite book, meditating or even

playing with pets are productive ways to reduce stress from the family interactions, strained finances, hectic schedules, traveling and other stressors that can be brought on by the holidays.

* Keep moving. The hustle and bustle of holiday preparation often pushes exercise to the side, but it’s important to stay active as much as possible. Get creative to keep moving by going for a family walk or playing physically active games with loved ones.

* Stick to your medications. Busy schedules can cause some people to skip medications, sometimes even forgetting them at home or not getting refills in a timely manner. Try using a medication chart as a reminder, and be sure to keep tabs on your blood pressure numbers. (Family Features & American Heart Association. Photo courtesy of Getty Images)

Ever notice how nostalgia seems to play a vital role in the holiday season?

You carefully resurrect old family traditions, dig out grandma’s greasespattered recipes, bedeck your tree with 50-year-old ornaments, and your teenage kids — normally devoted to trendy new music — happily subject themselves to Sinatra, Burl Ives, Andy Williams and Vince Guaraldi; it’s their soundtrack of Christmases past, bringing joyful but mildly melancholy memories.

This sense of nostalgia is the main reason the new “Christmas Story” sequel works. Indeed, that was also why the first film succeeded as well.

Released in 1983 but set in the 1940s, the original holiday sleeper has become a seasonal staple — to the point where TBS and TNT now run 24-hour marathons, with the beloved film showing over and over to impressive viewership.

Folks who love the first film with that obsessive zeal — a group that certainly includes me — are already raving about the sequel: “A Christmas Story Christmas,” now streaming on HBO.

It’s not that this enchanting follow-up is truly as great its truly great predecessor; but in carefully re-creating so much that we loved about the original, the sequel does just about everything right.

Nostalgia remains key, as “A Christmas

Story Christmas” unfolds in 1973 — so Ralphie and his buds are all grown up; yet the era is still closer to the first film than it is to ours. For middle-agers like me, there’s a burst of fond memories in such touchstones as a well-thumbed Sears catalog, the hotly sought Easy Bake Oven and even sci-fi stalwarts Frank Herbert and Ray Bradbury — not to mention that appalling seventies décor and (gasp) those boxy, boring family sedans.

Better yet, “A Christmas Story Christmas” returns much of the original cast — instantly recognizable despite being nearly 40 years older. And the new movie likewise revels in voiceover narration, warm sepia tones, and Old Englishstyle credits — also offering a host of visual references to the 1983 winner: the Chop Suey Palace, Flick’s aviator hat, the Bumpus hounds, Ralph’s rabbit sleeper, Dad’s fragile leg-lamp, the old-time radio and of course, Higbees store with its Santa Claus slide.

In addition to these engaging tributes, the film has original actors Peter Billingsley as Ralphie, Ian Petrella as kid brother Randy, R. D. Robb as Schwartz, Scott Schwartz as Flick, Zack Ward as bully Scut Farkas and even Yano Anaya as Farkas flunkie Grover Dill.

What it doesn’t have is Darren McGavin’s Old Man — or Jean Shepherd’s narrative voice.

McGavin, who died in 2006, had played Ralph’s unforgettable father, who dies at the beginning of the sequel — necessitating a holiday trip back to the Indiana homestead for Ralph and family. (Veteran character actress Julie Hagerty replaces Melinda Dillon, who played Mom in the first film and is today perhaps too old for the role.)

And as for Shepherd — who is also now gone — he not only wrote the book-basis

for the first film, but he also voiced Ralph’s inimitable narration. The new movie — co-scripted by Billingsley — badly misses Shepherd’s distinctive voice, both in his actual language and in its priceless verbal delivery.

Fortunately, Billingsley and team have greatly deepened the emotional resonance, with a series of touching final scenes of surprising poignancy and power. The business with Farkas — who (along with Robb) looks exactly the same as he did 40 years ago — is especially well done.

I don’t see anyone running a 24-hour marathon of this sequel; but I bet most “Christmas Story” junkies will want to watch it more than once.

I sure do.

Book Penned by Former Montoursville Man Now a Major Motion Picture

When Adam Makos, for merly of Montoursville, wrote a book about two heroic naval avia tors during the Korean War, he could scarcely have imagined that the book would become a major motion picture seven years after the book was written.

The film, “Devotion,” based on Makos’ book of the same title, was released in theaters nationwide last week, includ ing one locally. I went to see this film on its release date and was very impressed and moved by it.

Sometimes when Hollywood gets a hold of a good book, they alter it be yond recognition and basically wreck it. That was most certainly not the case

with “Devotion.” It stayed very true to the spirit and content of the book and celebrated the bravery and dedication and, yes, the “devotion” of the two na val aviators.

I understand that it is getting some Os car “buzz.” I am not an expert on what is Oscar-worthy, but I think it is safe to say that this film may be so, including the performances by some of the actors involved in the film. I heartily recom mend this film.

At the time the book was written seven years ago, I did a story on it for Webb Weekly. And I think it would be instruc tive to revisit this story and help give you the background and surrounding activities about the book to help you appreciate the film better. I hope I don’t give away too much of the story, but I hope that it makes you appreciate the film more.

A chance meeting by author Adam Makos and Korean War Medal of Hon or winner Thomas Hudner in 2007 has led to Makos’ latest book about military heroism, bravery, and the brotherhood that military people often experience with those that they serve with.

The book is titled, “Devotion: An Epic Story of Brotherhood, Heroism, and Sacrifice,” and it is the story of two U.S. Navy carrier pilots, Lieutenant Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, who

served together during the Korean War. The story details their devotion to duty and to each other. It also gives you a window into the role of naval aviators during the so-called “Forgotten War.”

Makos introduces us to Tom, a white New Englander from the country club scene, and Jesse, a sharecropper’s son from Mississippi who became the na vy’s first African American aviator. While America remained gripped in segregation, Tom and Jesse joined forc es as wingmen.

Jesse and Tom’s story took a dramat ic turn on December 4, 1950, during the Korean War, as the two naval avia

tors, flying from the deck of the U.S.S. Leyte, were providing close air support to beleaguered U.S. Marines and Army troops taking on a horde of Chinese and North Korean troops in desperate fighting at the Chosin Reservoir, later known as “Frozen Chosin.”

Jesse’s Corsair jet took enemy ground fire which caused his plane to crash violently. Jesse was having trouble escaping from his plane, now seriously on fire. He was trapped, and he looked skyward toward a flight of Corsairs and waved furiously at them.

Tom saw the smoke and his friend’s frantic waving. Tom disregarded a standing order from his air unit and crash-landed his Corsair in a bid to try and assist Jesse in his desperate, life-threatening situation.

Tom desperately tried to free Jesse from the cockpit of his plane. Jesse was hopelessly pinned within it. Tom used snow to try and extinguish the fire that neared the cockpit.

Together they waited for a rescue helicopter; Jesse and Tom’s flight mates knew that both were down and alive and so a helicopter was dispatched. Unfortunately, Jesse died before the arrival of the helicopter. Tom promised Jesse that he would deliver a message to Jesse’s wife, Daisy; Jesse loved her.

As Tom flew back on the helicopter,

he believed that he had somehow failed Jesse and that he would also face court martial for disregarding flight orders.

But it turns out that the commander of the U.S.S. Leyte, the carrier Jesse and Tom flew from, recommended Tom for the Congressional Medal of Honor, which he received from President Truman in April 1951.

Tom kept his promise to Jesse’s wife, Daisy, and did even more than that; he paid to put Daisy through college.

Over the decades, Tom was haunted by the thought of what have happened to Jesse’s remains.

Fast forward to 2013, at the age of 89, Tom, along with another Korean War veteran, and Adam Makos traveled to the mysterious and forbidding land of North Korea in a quest to find out what might have happened to Jesse’s remains and if he could locate them and bring them home.

Tom found himself seated across a table from a senior colonel of the North Korean People’s Army. With the cameras of the world media rolling, Tom asked his former enemies to help search for Jesse’s remains.

At first, the colonel was silent. He glanced at his notes, cleared his voice, and began to read a prewritten reply from the nation’s new, 30-year-old Supreme Leader—Kim Jong-un.

Kim Jong-un is not noted as being a tender or compassionate man, as witnessed by the hundreds, if not thousands, of people he has had executed. But Kim Jong-un said he was impressed that Tom had come so far, after so long, to keep a promise to a friend. In tribute to Tom, he granted approval for his army to resume the search for the remains of missing in action American servicemen—beginning with Jesse Brown.

There was supposed to be an expedition to search for the remains of Brown and perhaps others in the Chosin Reservoir area, but a large monsoon

storm made it impossible for things to proceed. Tom and his party returned home, not knowing for sure when, if ever, the search for Jesse’s remains will resume.

Adam Makos, the author of “Devotion,” is the author of the New York Times bestseller “A Higher Call.” In his work as a journalist, Adam has interviewed countless veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and present-day wars. In pursuit of a story, Adam has flown a WWII bomber, accompanied by a Special Forces raid in Iraq. He lives in Denver, Colorado. He is originally from the Montoursville area.

Now that a successful hunt has come to an end and there is venison hanging on the meat pole let’s take a look at doing your own butchering and processing. Hopefully, you were able to keep the meat clean and cool after making that well-placed shot, and the meat has been able to hang and age a bit as long as the temperature was cool enough. Those are the first steps in ensuring really tasty venison for the table.

How you decide to butcher the deer and prepare the various cuts will also help determine just how tender and well-received the meat will be to all those who will partake of your venison meals. Let’s start with the butchering.

Butchering your own deer is not a difficult process, and it is rather rewarding to know that you have done it yourself. Once the deer has been skinned, simply separate the carcass

by first removing the two front shoulders, then the two hind quarters.

The tenderest meat on the animal is that which lies along the spine — the backstraps and the inner tenderloins.

The backstraps lie on either side of the spine and start just above the hips and continue up past the shoulders and into the neck. Most folks trim the backstrap off at the shoulder, but looking closely, you can see that the same muscle group runs up into the neck, and this meat is just as tender as that which stops at the shoulder. A backstrap can be cut into 1 to 1 ¼ inch thick pieces (cross grain) and used as individual servings or cut into lengths of six to ten inches (depending on the number of people to serve). To maximize the flavor of this tender cut, it should be cooked over a grill or, preferably, over an open wood fire. Avoid overcooking any venison as it will tend to make the meat dry and tough. Ideally, cook venison to medium or medium rare.

Inside the ribcage and just forward of

the hind legs are the two inner tenderloins (sometimes called the “fish” by area hunters — don’t ask me why; that is just what some folks call them!). On a mature deer, they are about a foot long and about 1 to 2 inches in diameter. Don’t overlook this pair of muscles, as they are extremely tender.

Lobes of meat or muscle groups in the hindquarters or “hams” can easily be separated and saved as roasts, sliced into steaks, or sliced thinly for sandwich meat. “Dried venison,” a version of “dried beef,” can be made from meat found in the hind quarters. Shoulder and front leg meat generally can best be used either in making venison burger or cubed for canning. The neck meat is great for roasts or can also be used for burger or canning.

Once the major muscle groups have been removed for steaks or roasts, take time to go back over the entire carcass and recover any remaining scraps of meat for use in making burger meat or for use in canning.

Using venison meat to make venison burger is one of the best ways to stretch the meat for future use as it can be used in so many ways. Burgers on the grill or over an open wood fire,

casseroles, chili, venison meatballs with spaghetti, or in a meatloaf are several popular ways to use venison burger.

Canning venison is an easy way to preserve the meat for future use and ends up being ideal for many uses. Once canned, the meat is extremely tender and can be used in a “beef stroganoff ” served over rice or noodles, in soups or stews, or merely as a snack right out of a cold jar of the meat kept in the refrigerator!

It is even so tender that it can be spread onto bread, making a delicious and healthy sandwich.

To can venison, merely cut the meat into cubes about one-inch square. Trim away any fat or connective tissues. Fill a quart or pint canning jar to about ¾ of an inch from the top, and do not add water – the meat will make its own juice during the canning process. The preferred utensil for the canning is a pressure cooker.

Bear Hunting Still Ranks High In Pennsylvania

With over 200,000 bear hunters

heading out on this past Saturday’s opening day of the regular bear firearms season, it’s apparent that it ranks right behind our deer season. Obviously, it’s very popular in our state, and northcentral Pennsylvania holds some of the state’s best bear hunting opportunities.

Lycoming County often leads the state in the number of bears taken, but with the bear seasons still ongoing, Tioga County leads with 139 bears, and Lycoming has 114 thus far.

The first two days of our regular statewide firearms accounted for 651 bears on Saturday, and another 180 checked in on Sunday. While this year will again account for a

good bear harvest, I suspect last year’s take of 3,659, our fifth highest ever, will account for more.

I am also hearing and reading of some reports of some pretty good-sized bears again being taken this year. As I’ve mentioned before, Pennsylvania doesn’t have to take a back seat to any other state when it comes to size. Last year a 681-pounder was taken in Luzerne County, and a 722-pounder was killed in Franklin County. Our heaviest ever recorded was an 875-pounder taken in Pike County in 2010. Since 1992 seven bears weighing at least 800 pounds each have been taken in our state.

According to the Game Commission, our bear population also remains pretty stable. While the population numbers may be down a bit this year, we still had an

estimated population of over 15,000 — pushing the 16,000 mark. As a lot of us know, there is no shortage of bear sightings in our area; I have two different sightings recorded on camera of bears walking right by my front door — one in broad daylight.

Why the good numbers? Besides the good bear habitat our state offers, we also have a broad food supply and, in recent years, even more, bear hunting opportunities than ever before. In addition to

some even earlier archery hunting opportunities in a few WMUs in the southern part of the state, our statewide archery season runs from Oct. 15-Nov. 5. Muzzleloader for bear statewide is from Oct. 15-22, followed by our regular firearms season statewide from Nov.19-22. That’s not all; we have extended seasons in certain WMUs running from Nov. 26 to Dec. 3 or Dec. 10, depending on which units you are looking at.

A reminder, too, bear check

procedures are changing a bit. The Game Commission will only operate bear check stations on the first two days of the regular bear season (Sat. and Sun.) rather than all four days. Hunters who harvest a bear other than those two days must have them checked by calling the commission dispatch center at 1-833-PGC-HUNT or 1-833-PGCWILD, and a game warden or biologist will meet and collect the necessary information. According to the Game Commission,

operating the bear check stations is costly and labor-intensive, so the change is about efficiency and customer service. Running the bear check stations on the first two days of the regular season captures the greatest percentage of the harvest. While we have a good population of bears, keep in mind they have a lot of room to roam and hide. Only three percent of the bear hunters are successful each year, so you are still going to have to put some time and effort into the hunt.

Dwindling Numbers Signal Problems for the Game

Similar to the unwelcomed mid-November snowstorm, the winter scholastic sports season has arrived before we knew it. Coming on the heels of very successful football and soccer campaigns for several area schools, the 2022-23 high school basketball season tips off with a bevy of games this weekend.

As they sometimes manage to do with their decisions, the PIAA has made things a bit more urgent for teams and coaches via their ruling that teams have been given one less week of practice preparation than in previous years.

Official team practices could not begin until November 18, leaving just two weeks intertwined with the Thanksgiving holiday before the December 2 season openers.

The reduced practice time for teams could be a minor issue compared to the availability problem being faced by the referees assigned to work the games. At the annual preseason rules interpretation meeting of officials and coaches, the approaching critical shortage was made abundantly clear. With the bevy of high school and junior high school games being played nightly, the possibility exists there might not be enough referees to cover them all.

Lycoming County basketball referees chapter, revealed his group’s declining numbers.

“Five years ago, we had more than 80 officials in our chapter. Since then, our numbers have been declining each year. As we are about to start this season, we only have 38 active members. That number becomes further compromised due to potential job and personal commitments and injuries that could occur. Our officials are getting older and younger individuals do not seem interested, despite continued efforts to add new members. It’s sad but true; games can’t be played without referees to work the games.”

Statistical information from across the country reveals that 80% of the officials leave the vocation as the result of verbal abuse received from fans and coaches.

One new official donning the black & white stripes this season has plenty of basketball savvy as one of the area’s most successful high school coaches. Former Hughesville and Jersey Shore coach Nick Tagliaferri stepped down as the Spartan’s coach last spring and is turning his attention to the officiating side of the game.

Tagliaferri explained his change in basketball direction.

“Ironically, I’ve been kicking that idea around for three or four years. I have a lot of good friends that are officials, and I have a lot of respect for what they do. I knew my coaching end of basketball was winding down. Jessica and I have two sons, Dante, 4, and Branton, 2, and as my kids get older officiating gives me a way to stay involved in the game. I love basketball, and I know the Lycoming Chapter needs help; our game of basketball needs help. I want the game to continue to grow, so I figured I’d pitch in and help where I can.

“As a basketball coach, I tried to do everything I could to help our team win and help our players get the most out of themselves. As an official, you become a different kind of stakeholder in the game. As an official, you want to have as little to do with the outcome of a game as possible. I have always respected officials that have had that kind of mentality. Hopefully, I can become the kind of referee that when the game is over, I can leave the gym, and folks won’t even know I was in the game.

“I haven’t set any specific goals for myself. I just want to help out and grow every game. The local guys in the chapter have been awesome. I worked some games during the summer and some junior high girls’ games the past few weeks. I’ve been asking a lot of questions. I realize I am on the bottom rung, and I just want to improve as we go along.”

Tagliaferri leaves behind a sterling Hughesville hoop resume that includes 200+ wins, 14 post-season appearances, eight state tournaments, two to the quarterfinals, and one trip to the final four. Asked how he

might feel if called upon to referee a game on his former home court, he responded philosophically.

“Honestly, I don’t know that the assigners would let me do that anyway. That floor has been like my second home throughout my adult life. But as an official, you have a job to do. There wouldn’t be any sentimentality that comes into play. You just go into any game trying to do the best job you can. If I were to be put in that situation, I wouldn’t be worrying about it.”

As for his best coaching memories, two things were quick to be recalled.

“Number one; is what our former players are doing with their adult lives. Myself, and our coaches, are extremely proud of that. So many of them are wildly successful and have relocated all over the county. That stuff is just awesome, and why you coach. From a basketball standpoint, I think during our time there, our teams were able to play the game hard and be competitive. Most years, we met or exceeded the expectations others placed on us.”

As Tagliaferri and his whistle-blowing mates hit the hardwoods beginning Friday, fans should be mindful that they are doing a job to the best of their ability, and without them, the games couldn’t be played. Officials, like the players and coaches, will make occasional mistakes. But the price of a ticket does not give individuals the right to yell abuse and obscenities from the stands.

If you would like to make those referee calls in real time, talk to any official; they’d welcome the opportunity to tell you how you can sign up and join them.

Winter occasions and celebrations equate to increased travel opportunities for many families to see destinations around the globe. Whether you’re planning a trip far from home or taking advantage of nearby attractions during a staycation, you can get more out of your adventures when you plan ahead.

Consider these facts, figures and tips from the travel experts at Go City, a top attractions and experiences pass for city travelers.

Planning

Overall, Americans spend an average of 14 hours planning their getaway, the majority of which happens online or with the help of apps that provide booking information, directions, localized tips and more. In addition to deciding where to go and what to do once you get there, you may find planning ahead and checking restaurant reviews is especially helpful for those first hours after you arrive. Upon arrival, the first order of business for travelers is often refueling with a good meal, typically based on reviews they read before reaching their destination. Also research attractions and create a plan of things you’d like to do each day, even if you don’t follow it to the letter.

Remember, while many attractions and

entertainment options provide flexibility, some should be booked in advance. Check individual websites for events, attractions and more to find details about booking and tickets, if required. Destination

If you’re like many Americans, you may favor traveling to a place where the temperatures soar and you can soak up some sunshine. However, taking advantage of some of those typically warmer destinations outside of peak

season can actually provide a way to avoid lines and enjoy a break from the heat. For example, locals in Orlando prefer to visit the area’s popular theme parks in the winter. Using an option like Go City can help you save and experience more to make your in- or offseason trip even better with access to Legoland Florida, Fun Spot America and Boggy Creek Airboat Tours.

The experience passes provide access to popular attractions in 30 major cities around the world such as New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Orlando, London, Bangkok, Barcelona, Dubai and more. Cancun is another hot spot; using the All-Inclusive Pass during the cooler

months allows you to take advantage of one of the best times of the year to enjoy Xcaret at Night, along with the Cancun Scenic Tower. Other favorites among visitors include the Sky Wheel and parasailing adventures.

Packing

Smart packing is an often-overlooked secret to successful travel. Not only do you need enough attire for each day, you may also need extras to accommodate special activities or adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day and evening hours. The majority of Americans (63%) pack the night before a big trip but starting sooner can help ensure you don’t forget anything

important. Starting a list well ahead of time can help you get a jump on your packing while saving the physical act of fitting everything into your luggage until closer to departure.

Excursions

Taking advantage of the unique activities and excursions is a smart way to immerse yourself and more fully experience the cities you visit. On average, Americans participate in five activities and excursions during a single trip; most of the time, those outings are planned from home as much as four weeks ahead of time, rather than upon arriving in the destination city. If you’re planning to schedule excursions

on your trip, explore resources like Go City, which can help you save up to 60% over gate admission prices. Passes can unlock the best a city has to offer, from bucket list attractions and top tours in the United States, such as Universal Studios, Sea World, Shedd Aquarium, Long Beach Aquarium and the Statue of Liberty, or abroad like the Vatican, the Eiffel Tower and more. There are also plenty of hidden gems and exclusive experiences such as a tour of Fenway Park, Texas Ranger Museum, Museum of Us, Coral Crater Adventure Park and even wine and cheese-making classes.
