“Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to gather together and express grati tude for all that we have been given, the free doms we enjoy, and the loved ones who enrich our lives. We recognize that all of these bless ings, and life itself, come not from the hand of man but from Almighty God.”

AHappy Thanksgiving full of love, sharing, and generosity to ev eryone. We have so much to be thankful for in our Nation. This year, more than ever, I feel it’s important Americans appreciate and give thanks for all we are so very blessed with. With all that we have been faced with this past year, I think the kickoff to the holiday season has snuck up on many of us faster than ever. It’s also difficult to think about turkey and mistletoe while enjoying that summer-like weather we had a couple of weeks ago. The beauty of the first snowfall and colder temperatures helped to bring us that more seasonal feeling.

Before I get to some fun food facts about Thanksgiving dinner, I’d like to share with you a couple of thoughts about the tradi tional gathering at the Thanksgiving table and how to make it a happy one. Actually, these ideas can carry right on through to dessert, the football games, which may in clude a little turkey bowl action in the back

yard, then the feasting on leftovers that usu ally follows. Then finally, that evening card game and conversation many seem to enjoy. With all that being said, you can carry these thoughts right on through to the New Year’s Eve parties, and I promise all there will be far less stress and disagreements.

I’m sure my family already knows where I’m going with this. Simply, stay away from any political discussion. As I stated last week, we are definitely a divided Nation; let’s just call it 50/50. This means you have the same odds of winning the coin toss for the turkey bowl as someone getting offend ed by a discussion involving the president. The next thing that happens is Uncle Joe gets hit right between the eyes with a turkey leg by someone who strongly disagrees with him. This was obviously done by a younger member of his family. I should probably put a disclaimer here about Uncle Joe; I’m not referring to our sitting president; it’s a ran dom reference about that uncle we all have.

My next suggestion will help you avoid political discussions and prevent Uncle Joe from needing an ice pack. Please under no circumstance have any news network or news broadcast on TV. They could be talking about something as simple as the pardoning of the Thanksgiving turkey and there will be a political slant put on it. Pres ident Joe Biden could be proudly pardoning Tom the Turkey and serving up a tofurkey

for dinner. The next thing you know Uncle Joe makes a comment and gets whacked with the other leg. I’m sure you get the picture. No polit ical discussions; keep every body happy.

I also want to add here that there is no truth to the rumor that there was to be a President Trump balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and it was grounded. This was allegedly done due to the fact his head was too big to be guided through the streets of Manhattan, and they could find no one to work as handlers with the former president’s balloon. This was probably fake news start ed by a network news station.

And, again, you in no way want this, or any news on the screen on Thanksgiving Day.

Now let’s plate up some food facts about the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. It is estimated 88% of Americans will eat turkey on Thanksgiving. This will result in the pur chase of over 46 million turkeys nationwide, sales will exceed $1 billion.

There will be an estimated 250 million pounds of potatoes served right alongside that perfectly roasted bird. This includes both regular and sweet potato dishes.

Stuffing is a tough number to nail down; this is due to the amount of breadcrumbs and bread that is purchased for homemade stuffing as opposed to the box or bag pre made mix. The best number I could come up with is that Americans will spend $125

million on the stuffing of their choice.

Americans will spend nearly another $90 million on corn, macaroni & cheese, and side dishes.

They will pour over 30 million gallons of gravy and purchase over 80 million pounds of cranberry-based products. They will also serve over 40 million rolls.

The last Thanksgiving course, which is many Americans’ favorites, there will be over 28 million pies eaten on Thanksgiving Day — 19 million of these are sold over the counter. Over $5.5 million was spent on pie filling, with 37% of those preparing dinner baking homemade pies.

In cleaning the plate on Thanksgiving din ner, on average, the dinner will cost roughly 25% more this year — and if it matters to you, most will eat an extra 1,500 calories on Turkey Day.

Please make sure no family member, friend, or neighbor is forgotten on Thanks giving Day when it comes to this special dinner of gratitude and sharing. Wheth er you have an extra seat at your table, or someone is homebound and needs a little delivery service.

Thank you to all that make contributions to local churches and organizations to help provide not only Thanksgiving dinner but meals every day of the week. This is truly working in the name of good. It is some times forgotten that the giving of time is al ways needed to provide these meals.

Happy Thanksgiving, and let’s all be extra careful out there.

God Bless America.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving Y’all! It’s that time of year again. My list of everything I am thankful for this year! As you join friends and family this Thanksgiving, take a moment to remember all the things you have to be thankful for this year. Times get tough, but there is always a bright side and listing them out often makes the bad seem a little better. There is a lot going to on the be less than thankful for (looking at you heating oil and grocery prices), but that’s all the more reason to remember what you are thankful for this year!

– Steve and Kiddo. Y’all make every day an adventure and I can’t tell you how much I love and appreciate you both. <3

– Bulleit – my happy pupperface who just loves to love his family. I know things kinda suck for you right now, but I promise, we’ll get you fixed up ASAP!

– Tacocat – my constant companion and nighttime heater.

– Remmington – You are standoffish and adorable and I love you to bits!

– Cuddl Duds sheets.

– The warm clothes in my closet.

– Living in a small community that cares about each other.

– A job that lets me write ridiculous Thanksgiving lists.

– The brave men and women, past and present, for defending our freedom. Without their hard work and sacrifice, very little of this list would be possible.

As always, Webb Weekly’s success is dependent on small businesses, so, don’t forget that Saturday is Small Business Saturday. Please go out and patronize your local businesses. Successful local business leads to successful communities. Everyone wins when you support local business! This is probably more important than ever this year!

Did I mention coffee?

Rogers Rejoicing

The Rogers’ family home sits along Route 654 in Nisbet, in a house built in the 1950s with a kitchen that had never been updated. Now, thanks to KISS-FM’s annual Kitchen Makeover promotion, that is ancient history for Acacia and Travis Rogers and their four children Kaydence, Trent, Blaine, and Kara — the latest winners of the Gary Chrisman Morning Show’s long-running contest.

“We had entered this contest several times before, never really dreaming we would win,” an excited Acacia revealed. “Once we had reached the final five, I was so nervous. The morning that announcement was made, I figured it wasn’t going to be us. I was sitting in the kitchen looking out the window when I saw this white truck and then Gary Chrisman pull into the driveway. I just started screaming. I couldn’t control myself.”

This is the 15th year Chrisman and KISS-FM have teamed with local businesses to transform home interiors with modern kitchen remodels. The contest had several thousand entries. Two hundred four of them qualified by winning on-air, online, and at the various sponsor locations as the

contest proceeded. All those entries’ names were put in the drawing box, out of which the names of the five finalists were determined.

“I’ve been doing local radio for 40+ years, 35 of them at KISS-FM, and great contests are the sizzle to a radio station,” Chrisman offered. “Just because you may operate in a small market, you don’t have to think small. You can do major-market caliber radio contests right here, and that is what we’re doing with the Extreme Kitchen Makeover. We’ve had great people involved since day one, and all the sponsors thought at a big level because it provides all of us a chance to give something back during the holiday season to people who may never have had a new kitchen and new construction in their house. To see the surprised reaction of the people this contest has been able to help over the years — that’s what it is all about. To be able to do that in Williamsport, PA, is pretty cool.”

This is the 5th year in a row TurnKey Construction has served as the lead sponsor.

“This is a great sense of pride, especially for our company,” said TurnKey spokesman Matt Bower. “It shows you how appreciative the people are and the quality of work we do. To

get this kind of project done in ten days is fun to see and gives me a lot of pride to see what we can do as a business. It takes a village to get something like this done, and we had a crew of a dozen employees practically working around the clock. We want to be able to handle both big and small projects. This project has a small-town feel yet is a big-town product.

“When we first walked into the Rogers’ home, we saw a myriad of possibilities for change. We took what had been their old kitchen and made it a kid’s room, carved out a new living room space, and then took what had been the living room and made it into a bigger, modern kitchen. They have four kids and needed a lot more space.

“Making those kind of room changes sometimes can be difficult but we had R&J Ertel and Jeff Hammond Electric working with us side-by-side, and they knew exactly what needed to be done. All the various businesses that helped with this makeover did a great job, and it is gratifying to see it all come together in such a short time.

“We just love to give back. Our business has been fortunate, so it is nice to give back to the community, especially to people that really appreciate it.”

The ten-day Rogers’ home turnaround was the result of tremendous teamwork and cooperation by the sponsorship

team assembled under TurnKey’s lead. In addition to R&J Ertel and Hammond Electric, those businesses included: Lezzer Lumber, cabinetry; Susquehanna Marble & Granite, countertops; Bill’s Appliance, stainless steel appliances; Echo Flooring Gallery, kitchen flooring; Service 1st Federal Credit Union, $1,000 Visa Gift Card; Beiter’s, furnishings; Timeless Furniture & Interiors, design services and window treatments; Elery Nau Hardware, paint; Mary Jo Bower, furnishings; Williamsport Moving & Storage, moving items from the home, storing them and bringing them back after the makeover was complete; Howell Drywall & Painting; New Life Wood Floors, flooring and woodwork; Alicia’s House of Country, decorative touches; Paul Albert Architect, renovation plans for each of the five finalists homes; Woodrich, creative furniture; BK Disposal, waste removal; Genetti Hotel & Suites, housing accommodations for the Rogers family while renovations were taking place; Pudgie’s Pizza, Wings & Subs, and Bud Light.

The Rogers family returned home on the morning of the reveal, on November 14th, and were amazed by what had taken place.

“We try so hard, and this gives us hope. Our prayers were answered by so many people who prayed for us that we could win this when we learned we were among the ve nalists of the contest. We were so nervous, hoping that we would win,” an appreciative Acacia added.

As dozens of visitors took in all the trappings, and the Chrisman Show broadcast the proceeding to its listeners, Travis Rogers watched from a corner of the room, his face lit in amazement and emotional tears swelling in his eyes.

This Thanksgiving, as we watch the parade, prepare the turkey, mash the potatoes and bake the pumpkin pies may you take a moment to be grateful for all that you have been blessed with this year. It has been a year of uncertainty and change but also a year to be appreciative for family and love ones both far and near. Take this day to be humble and thankful. Thanksgiving Packing Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

No sooner has the hubbub of Halloween settled down then Thanksgiving comes along, and it’s non-stop until New Year’s Day. At least, it feels that way, with it seeming to speed up each year. As we prepare for another Thanksgiving, I, of course, am thinking about what to wear for my family and me.

Like every year, we are Ohio-bound to celebrate this fall holiday with my husband’s extended family, so clothing needs to be chosen for the actual day of giving thanks in addition to what we need to pack for the trip. Here’s my general approach for packing yourself and your little ones. Spouses and older kids are on their own.

First things first, how long will we be away, will there be laundry available, and what’s the forecast? Three overnights, yes, and it’s November, it’s Ohio, it’s flat, and it’s going to be cold. From here, I start with basics — PJs, underwear, socks, etc. My general habit is always to throw in an extra of each essential. With a seven and a

4-year-old, I play it safe with extra extras. For our threenight stay, that adds up to five pairs of socks, underpants, three sets of PJs, five tops and five bottoms, and three sweatshirts/hoodies for each kid. At this point, since they now have opinions on such matters, I try to involve them in picking out their clothes. Sometimes they are interested, but other times they couldn’t care less.

I DO remind them while I’m packing that these tops, bottoms, and socks are the only options they will have while away. This sometimes requires several reminders for it to sink in.

For their Thanksgiving dinner outfit, I have them choose two options: Dressy and comfy. What they end up wearing will be a gameday decision. Of course, I want them to dress up, preferably in coordinated looks, but I’m also a realist. I’m not going to put up with a clothing-based tantrum 20 minutes before saying grace. Nor am I dying on a hill of sweatpants and unicorn t-shirts; as long as it goes on clean and they are warm enough, they can eat

turkey wearing whatever.

Beyond clothes and toiletries, there’s a separate suitcase just for toys that they are in charge of packing and repacking with games, crafts, stuffies, and whatever else they think they’ll “need.” They are much more enthusiastic about packing the toy suitcase than the clothing bag. I try to make this a learning moment in the hope that they start thinking ahead. I try to ask leading questions like, “do we need every Barbie on this trip, or will two each be enough?” “Do you think it’s a good idea to bring library books that may not make it back?” “Will there be enough time to assemble this Lego castle kit?” “Do you think the dollhouse will fit in a carry-on-sized roller bag?”

Thankfully, my husband gets to oversee electronics. So, he’ll charge tablets and headphones and work with the girls to download whatever they want to watch in the car. We used to be stalwarts about them amusing themselves on car trips, but quite frankly, I’m tired of playing “I Spy” or “the barn game.” We’re looking at a 4+ hours car trip; I’m all for whatever makes it easier. I just want to be left alone to read in peace in the passenger seat. Also, for the car, we have the requisite snacks

and drinks. My husband also takes the lead in packing the “go” bag with those supplies and other sundries like band-aids, flushable wipes, and hand sanitizer.

For myself, comfort and warmth are the priority, especially for the downtime at our Airbnb, which we will be sharing with my husband’s parents, brother, and sister-in-law — FUN! In thinking about activities as well as the duration of the trip and weather, my packing list is looking at leggings, hiking boots, flannel shirts, and some Henley long-sleeved style tees. For the big dinner, I’m going monochromatic with a gray turtleneck and trousers, keeping it simple yet classic, with a menswear-style loafer and gold jewelry. I may even pack a dress coat or oversized blazer to throw on for the big family gathering while wearing my work-a-day puffer for travel.

And, of course, extras of the essentials, hair dryer, brushes, all of my lotions and potions, and makeup.

As for my husband, he’s on his own because I trust he will make the right decisions. We haven’t had the “Do you think shorts are a good idea for November…” learning moment for almost a decade.

County Hall Corner Help Wanted and Help is On the Way

For most of the 1990s and into the first decade of the new millennium, I lived in Eastern Europe and wore a number of hats, one of which was working as a human resource management specialist. Picking up my MBA in Belgium and Ph.D. in Latvia, and postdoctoral work at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, I found myself rather busy in helping companies of all sizes on three continents deal with the challenge of employees, what I termed dealing with workers from hiring to retiring (…or firing!).

I mention this because I can plainly see the crisis right now in the United States over the lack of employees for business and non-profit enterprises. Why this has happened is a story for another day, but the struggle is serious because there are four essential elements that must be in balance for any organization to survive; profitability (financially solvent), productivity (it must be producing a product or service that is in demand), customer service (there must be a market for this product or service) and finally, employees (engaging them in such a way they wish to stay with the organization). If any of these are dysfunctional, the organization itself will be dysfunctional. In

other words, these four must be ‘balanced’ for the system to run effectively, or the business will no longer be in business.

For the past couple of years, the weak link in this chain is the last one — employees. Anyone who is not a hermit has seen “Help Wanted” signs plastered everywhere. Businesses, large and small, are struggling tremendously to fill their employee vacancies or even find volunteers, in the case of charity organizations.

The government of Lycoming County is one of the largest employers in the county, and for years it has been struggling with finding and keeping its employees. Unfortunately, this is not just a headache for top management — the County Commissioners — but also for the labor force that is working that must pick up the

COUNTY HALL

slack. For them, it means more work and little or no compensation for doing it.

The Lycoming County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, November 10th, was monumental in addressing the employee recruitment, engagement, and retention difficulties the county has been wrestling with for decades. Policy #400 took up an hour of discussion before it was finally voted on and approved, but most of it was trying to explain the significance and possibilities of the new policy. What it is designed to do is open up an entirely new compensation policy for the Lycoming County workers. In simplest terms, it is not just evaluating employees who have education and experience for hiring purposes but also for setting the rate for their employment compensation. This is huge because, in many cases, the base rate for positions was not evaluating the true value of the employee itself. The result was that an individual would accept the job but have an eye open for any other openings somewhere else because they would believe they were not properly being compensated.

Everyone has their own assessment of their employment value. For example, a graduate from an elite college who just dropped upwards of $100,000 in four years of education wants more than a base wage, but they do not realize that they actually don’t know squat about the real

world and their ‘worth’ is in their potential, not their present knowledge/experience base. And a man who has spent years and years on the front lines of his occupation and knows all the ‘ins and outs’ yet does not have the recognized credentials is also minimized in compensation.

Given that the county’s current employment policy dates back to 1988, it was more than about time. The new compensation Policy #400 for Lycoming County is innovative and hopefully effective in meeting the employees at least halfway in these areas. It will be an invaluable tool for recruiting purposes. Also, current employees with significant and recognizable education and experience will find that these will be factored into their compensation plan.

The board of commissioners deserves high praise for addressing an issue that has not been dealt with for three decades now. Whether it will make a real difference, time will tell because we are living in times that do not make a lot of sense. But, if I were many years younger, I believe I would seriously consider working for the county because it seems they are certainly heading in the right direction.

For those interested in exploring employment possibilities with the county, contact Career Link Center. 145 W. 3rd St, Williamsport, PA. 17701 (www. pacareerlink.state.pa.us).

Bal

Masque,

Williamsport

Sun November 27, 1925

Most Elaborate Function Here in Years

The Bal Masque which was held in the ballroom of the Park Hotel Wednesday evening, under the auspices of the Art Guild was one of the most elaborate, if not the most elaborate of the kind that has ever been seen in this city in many years. The committee in charge worked tirelessly to make the affair a success and were well repaid for their efforts.

Advanced announcements indicated that the affair would take the form of an Oriental fete and the guests were convinced at once of this as they entered the ballroom which had been magnificently decorated with a gorgeous array of Oriental rugs valued at a small fortune. One of the rugs was between 600 and 700 years old and in it was woven the history of the many generations of an Oriental family.

Between the rugs on the wall were huge

black vases gaily decorated in gold, peacocks and other flowers and other designs and gorgeous gilded balloons. The plants were wrapped in black with huge grape leaves. Oriental lamps and shaded chandeliers gave off a soft glow to the lighting effects.

The main dining room of the hotel which had been cleared for cards, was transformed in a lovely Oriental Garden with dozens of garlands of colorful flowers, Japanese parasols and lanterns.

Mrs. G.V. Watkins was general chairman of the committee on arrangements and to her much of the credit belongs for the elaborate decorations.

All who were attired in costumes entered the ballroom through the hand painted screens, the effect of which was very beautiful with the spotlight thrown on the gay colored attire. The judges made their selections for the various prize awards. This was followed by a grand march.

16th Skip Hunsinger Christmas Children’s Spectacular To Be Held Sunday, December 11

After two years of having to change the format and have the event be a drive-by one because of COVID, the Skip Hunsinger Christmas Children’s Spectacular returns to its old format, by returning to inside the Communi ty Arts Center when the event is held on Sunday, December 11 at 2 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the Volun teer Corps of Ushers of the Commu nity Arts Center, will feature various types of entertainment which are being developed for the show at the time of this writing. It will also in clude “goody bags” containing candy and various knick-knacks for chil dren attending the Spectacular.

Prize drawings for children ages 5 to 10 will also be held. Each child 5 to 10 years old will be given a ticket, half of which will be detached for the draw ing and numbers drawn and called out for various nice prizes that will be given out. And, of course, that “jolly old elf” himself, Santa Claus, will be

in the house.

This event begins at 2 p.m., but doors open at 1:15 at the CAC.

The Children’s Christmas Spectac ular began in 2007 when my uncle, Harold “Skip” Hunsinger, and Frank “Whitey” Missigman, both then members of the Volunteer Corps of the Community Arts Center, pro posed that the CAC’s volunteers sponsor an annual event called the “Children’s Christmas Spectacular,” which was a revival of the Christmas parties sponsored by the local AFLCIO held at the then Capitol Theater from the late 1930s until the early 1960s. These events usually included a movie, candy, and a small toy for each child, something that was wel come to children, particularly during the Depression years. Skip and a ded icated committee made up of CAC volunteers did all the leg work to make this event possible and as suc cessful as it has been.

For questions about this event, you can contact the CAC box office at (570) 326-2424.

31st:

We made it to Thanksgiving week! I hope the last few weeks of reading my columns have helped you prepare for this glorious Thanksgiving season. As you gather with family and friends from near and far, remember how much we have to be thankful for. Count your many blessings; name them one by one, count your many blessings, and see what God has done!

First and foremost, before anything, I am so thankful for my Lord and Savior. Every morning this year, I have sat down during my five-minute devotions that always end in time with him in prayer. Sometimes I catch myself singing, “God will take care of you.” That song has really comforted me the past few years during these crazy times we live in. Just know that he can give you so much peace. All you have to do is ask! Things might not be

on our time or happen when we want to, but that’s the other thing he and I have discussed. Patience. I know things happen for a reason, and I also know God will never leave or forsake me.

hat. I’m also so grateful for my sweet one-hundred-and-five-pound black baby, Bear, who is always happy to see me no matter what and surely loves his momma. He is seriously the best dog and is loved by everyone.

I just have to wait and know he is in control, and that gives me so much comfort. I am thankful for my sweet little church in the country and the family I have grown up with in Buchanan Baptist. Thankful for a place we can go freely and worship. Next up is my family. My husband who is my best friend and my rock. I don’t know what I would ever do without him and his unconditional love for me. I’m so thankful for my kids, who made me a momma. They are the joy in my life, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. I know I am not perfect, but when I look at my babies, I know I got something in my life perfectly right.

We are so blessed to have the friends we do too. The ones that we call “framily.” Friends who are always there for you no matter what and keep in contact because they care. The ones who are like brothers and sisters and you can’t live without. Ones that don’t judge you if you have a movie night with takeout at your home and they show up, and you are in your robe and jammies. These are friends you want to hold close, haha.

I’m so grateful for incredible parents, siblings, beautiful nieces, sweet nephew, and a big family who looks out for everyone, loves unconditionally, and would be there at the drop of a

Something I’ve been extra grateful for lately is my “jobs.” I absolutely love what I do. I never dread going to work. I have made extended families and friendships through what I do. I’ve been able to stay home and raise my babies because of it. Getting them ready for school and on the bus, and being home their first few years of school to get them off the bus and have a snack ready. To be a big part of school activities and holiday parties. To be home when they were little, on

sick school days, and there when they needed help with homework. I’m just so blessed to be able to do those things and don’t take a second of it for granted. I’m thankful for our sweet little home in the country. A roof over our heads and a warm home to come home to. For fresh running water, electricity, and a washer and dryer! (Can I get an amen!?) For the adorable wildlife, we get to watch each day and beautiful woods that we can watch change as the seasons pass. Home is where the heart is, and our little home surely warms my heart. It’s a place where we are raising our family. A place we have worked on to make our own. A place where we have cried, a place where we have laughed, and a place we can’t wait to come home to after a long day’s work. A place where so many memories are being made. Can I mention my double ovens? Sure, I can. It’s my column, right? Darn it; I’m thankful for those babies! And, seventy-five percent of the year, I can store lunch boxes in the extra oven, man! Thank you, Jesus. Health. I am so thankful I can get out of bed each morning, take care of

my family, and then go to work. I’m beyond thankful I can see, smell, and hear the blessings of each day. There is no denying the saying “health is wealth.” If you are healthy, you ought to be praisin’ Jesus right now. He can take this away in a blink of an eye! Be thankful for your health, your family, and the things we take so often for granted. Thanksgiving just isn’t about turkey, stuffing, and all the sides. It’s about so much more. Be thankful each and every day. Thank God for your life and all he has given you. It’s a wonderful life!

As I close this Thanksgiving column, I

want to end it by thanking each of you. I am so grateful to Webb Weekly for hiring me to write in the paper so I can reach so many of you wonderful people out there who continue to amaze me each year. You read religiously and tell others about it, and it does get back to me. It never stops putting a smile on my face on how many people a day I can make with just one reading. This is why I am so thankful. If I can make one person’s bad day turn around with one of my columns or lead one person to love the Lord, it has made the past four years worth every word I have typed. I am who I am through my readings, and no different in person. I am thankful for my family at the Webb, who give me the freedom of writing! I am so blessed, and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all. I pray you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sending you all my love and thanks this Thanksgiving! Enjoy every minute.

Taste of Home Creamy Turkey Soup

Here’s a great way to use leftover turkey. This recipe is so good and easy!

This photo is not my own, but I have made it and my family loves it.

Ingredients:

• 6 tablespoons butter, cubed

• 5 medium carrots, chopped

• 1 large onion, chopped

• 3 celery ribs, sliced

• 1/2 lb. mushrooms sliced (optional; I didn’t use them but did add a few diced potatoes!)

• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

• 3 teaspoon Italian Seasoning

• 1/4 teaspoon white pepper

• 1/4 teaspoon pepper

• 10 cups chicken broth

• 3 cups uncooked wagon wheel pasta or other large shaped pasta

• 2 cups cubed cooked turkey

• 1 cup half-and-half or heavy cream

Directions:

In a 6-qt. stockpot, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add all the veggies; cook and stir 8-10 minutes or until tender. Stir in flour and seasonings until blended; gradually stir in broth. Bring to a boil. Stir in pasta. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 8-10 minutes or until pasta is tender. Stir in turkey and cream; heat through (do not boil).

The Williamsport Area High School Marching Millionaires won the Cavalcade of Bands American Class Championships on Sunday, Nov. 13, at Hershey Park Stadium.

The championship contest is the culminating event after 10 weeks of competition for the band, similar to a fall sports schedule. Held over two days, 96 bands competed in five classes for top honors.

There were 28 bands in American Class between A and Open divisions. The Millionaires achieved the highest score, and not only earned the champion title but also won awards for Best Overall Music and Visual Effect, Visual Performance, and Best Percussion section.

Marching Band students begin technique practice each spring and continue through the summer, learning music, marching and choreography for their show. The band performed over 20 times this fall at competitions, football games, parades and other events.

“Success on this level is the result of a process these kids buy into every day,” said Band Director Todd Kendall. “Designed and instructed by a dedicated, professional staff and performed by students who live every day into the Marching Millionaire culture of sustained excellence. It’s no accident that for almost five decades the marching band has been at the top of the competitive game in Pennsylvania. Many thanks to the WASD administration, school board, teachers, support staff, parents and

community members for giving these students unending support.”

The competitive marching band is a part of the Williamsport Area High School Music Department, and runs like a varsity sport. Band students have the option to join.

For two decades, the WASD has been nationally recognized as a Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. At WAHS, there are about 150 band, 150 orchestra and 200 choir students who can participate not only in the Marching Millionaires but also three orchestras, three bands, five choirs, and select groups like GQ, Les Chanteuses, Strolling Strings, and Big Band (Jazz).

Cold Tempering for Health

honest; I do not love winter. I’m not into

or snowboarding, and while I do think

is pretty, I do not love the cold temperatures that come with it. That being said, I grew up in the snow belt of Upstate New York and can handle the cold if I need to.

If you have read my previous articles, you will probably remember that my wife and I had spent a number of years in the south. (They have much better weather, by the way.) We moved there right after we graduated college and were married. When we were there, I recall walking around in the late fall/early winter with shorts on. I thought it was hilarious to see people shuffle around with their shoulders hunched, wearing long winter coats and hats. After all, I grew up in an area where the snow was piled two stories high, and schools were almost never closed for inclement weather.

After several years, my wife and I decided to move back up to North Central Pennsylvania to raise our family. My very first week of work in the fall, I came down with the flu or some other virus and thought, “Why did I ever leave the south?”

In addition to my illness, I realized I was completely de-acclimated to cold temperatures. It was then that I made a promise to myself to adapt to the cold and began to research what has become known as cold tempering or cold training.

Many olde-time strongmen trained specifically for cold adaptation and would take cold water or ice baths, rub snow on their bare skin, or even swim in near-freezing water. Though these extreme methods have their pros and cons, the focus of this article is simply to shed light on the practice of cold tempering.

In a previous article, I discussed

the idea that cold training is the practice of exposing oneself to low temperatures, sometimes well below freezing, with the aim of improving one’s physical and psychological self. This is also something that, like exercise, should be practiced and trained regularly so that adaptation can occur. People interested in cold training should begin by gradually building their tolerance to colder temperatures over time.

While further research is necessary regarding the merits of cold adaptation, cold tempering advocate Wim Hof, believes that exposure to the cold is beneficial to your health. So much so, in fact, that he has created an entire system of cold adaptation. Some evidence suggests that cold temperatures can speed up your metabolism. In addition, exposure to cold can reduce inflammation and may assist in the healing process after an injury or intense exercise. As part of his method for improving health, Hof uses cold showers and ice baths to improve energy levels and relieve

symptoms caused by autoimmune diseases. Hof and other advocates also believe that systematic exposure to cold may also relieve symptoms of stress and minor depression.

As with any new type of exercise or health intervention, check with your family physician to see if you are healthy enough to try cold tempering. If they do give you the thumbs up (they’ll probably think you’re a bit crazy), start out slowly. A minute or two in a slightly chilly shower is a good place to start. Start with your lower body and, over time, expose yourself to colder temperatures and/ or for longer intervals. As you adjust, try immersing yourself higher up your body until eventually you are completely covered in cold water. When cold showers are mastered, ice baths might be next.

Note: This article is the fifth installment in a series called “Missional Strategy: Why we do what we do the way we do it.” Previous articles are always available at www.webbweekly. com.

As I suggested in last week’s article, the lack of Christian unity is a big obstacle the church encounters as it seeks to accomplish the mission of God. What can we do about it?

God’s Word teaches us that transformation of the mind is the foundation of the Christian life. If we allow God to transform our thinking, then the unity Jesus prayed for in John 17:20-26 can become a reality — and the mission can be fully accomplished.

Sounds simple, right? It is, but we’re good at turning simple into complicated. Why do we do that?

We do it because transformation is something only God can accomplish, and He just seems too slow at getting it done. So, we like to speed things up by making lists of rules for people to follow. We teach them the list and tell them to conform to it if they want to live in unity with other believers. List conformity is our shortcut

to unity.

And that’s a problem because conformity is not unity. Oh, it looks like unity, but it isn’t. Let’s face it; most Christians are divided because we can’t agree on the lists. The problem with conformity is that it doesn’t change the way we think; it only changes the way we act — and real Christianity is not an act; it’s a transformed life.

According to Romans 12:2, we are not to conform to lists. Instead, we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. God knows that all acting rises out of thinking, so He wants our minds to be transformed until our thoughts are His thoughts — until we think as Jesus Christ would think. God doesn’t want us to be list followers; He wants us to think the way Jesus would think.

Jesus drives this truth home when He quotes Isaiah in Matthew 15:7-8, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” There it is — conformity to human rules.

WWJD, “What would Jesus do?” is a great question, but before we can know what He would do, we have to ask, “How

FAITH

would Jesus think?” What He would think would bring about what He would do. You can’t skip the thinking just to get to the doing. Clearly, the transformation of the mind is required if we want to live like real Christians.

Paul confirms this principle in Philippians 2:5, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” To live in unity with one another, we must be driven by the same mindset that drove Jesus. Paul then shares the mindset of Jesus with us, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross.”

Because Jesus’ thoughts were right, His actions were right. As churches, we try to turn it around. We think if we can get people to act right, then at some point, they may start thinking right. It doesn’t work. Never has, never will — but we just keep doing it. Insane, right?

Real Christians don’t conform to lists. They don’t need to because their minds are being transformed — and transformation reveals God’s good, pleasing and perfect will. Paul urges us to understand this

principle,

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2

Long ago, God declared this about you and me and the time in which we live, “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Jeremiah 31:33

Your church has a list, and so does mine. If we value our lists and elevate them above the transformative power of God, then we will continue to be divided — and the mission will fail.

But if we’re willing to (1) trust in the transformative power of God’s Word and Spirit; and if we’re willing to (2) give God the time He requires to work out His transformative work in each of us, and if we’re willing to (3) love and serve each other while He does His work, then He will be our God, and we will be His people. That sounds like glorious unity to me — and because unity powers the mission of God, we’ve got to get this right.

A Few Defiant Ones: With and Without a “White Savior”

Focused on the 1955 lynching of a 14-year-old black boy in Mississippi, the galvanizing “Till” scarcely has a single white character — with the notable exception of completely worthless jurors and government officials, along with (of course) the boy’s unconscionable accusers and killers.

In that way, this October release sidesteps

the white-savior trope found in such movies as “The Help” and “The Blind Side.” It’s a surprisingly common motif that features black characters escaping from oppression with the vital help of a white man or woman — the latter often serving as main character in the story. Problem is, a lot of these movies — such as, for instance, “To Kill a Mockingbird” — are widely acclaimed and very popular.

That would include 2018’s “Green Book,” with Viggo Mortensen as a bigoted white chauffeur driving a black pianist (Mahershala Ali) on a tour of the South

during the Civil Rights era. Mortensen’s Tony Vallelonga does wind up rescuing his charge from several ugly scenarios — though I might observe that Ali’s Don Shirley has much to teach Tony too. In any case, this winsome and entertaining title took the Best Picture Oscar that year.

Less problematic is 2019’s “The Best of Enemies,” with veterans Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell playing real-life black and white figures who learned to work together on integrating a public school — even though he was

president of the local Ku Klux Klan. And then there’s a pair of classics starring Sidney Poitier — “The Defiant Ones” (1958) and “In the Heat of the Night” (1967) — both of which flirt with but ultimately resist the white-savior stereotype.

“In the Heat of the Night,” one of my alltime favorites, does feature a white sheriff working with Poitier’s homicide detective; but it’s the black man who pinpoints the killer — by going, as he tells the sheriff, “where whitey ain’t allowed.” And indeed, his case-cracking is so slick and timely that it instantly disbands a gang of rednecks who plan to attack him. “The Defiant Ones,” which concerns a black and white man handcuffed together as they escape from a prison-truck crash, completely upends the white-savior trope at its bracing

More recently, Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” also has a white costar who is not a white savior. John David Washington — Denzel’s son — plays reallife policeman Ron Stallworth, who in the early 1970s managed to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan; Adam Driver plays a sort of white avatar who can represent Stallworth at the meetings, but that never eclipses the black officer’s bold, courageous work. The film won writer-director Lee his first competitive Oscar (Best Screenplay). Also free of the stereotype is 2019’s dazzling “Just Mercy,” a film that inexplicably failed to nail a single Oscar nom, despite its first-rate cast and gripping true-life story.

Michael B. Jordan plays Harvard-educated

lawyer Bryan Stevenson, who in 1989 worked to defend a wrongly accused black man in (of all places) Monroeville, Alabama — hometown of “Mockingbird” author Harper Lee and model for that novel’s town of Maycomb. With a sensational supporting performance from Tim Blake Nelson as a witness who’d been badgered into lying, the film felt so relevant during the 2020 race riots that its distributors streamed it free on multiple platforms.

Watch also for two other real-life dramas, “Fruitvale Station” (2013) and “Selma” (2014) — plus the 1995 middle-age romcom “Waiting to Exhale.”

Oh yeah — and a little film called “Wakanda Forever,” now playing and already well on its way to half a billion bucks in box-office bounty.

“The Year of the Puppy: How Dogs Become Themselves” by Alexandra Horowitz c.2022, Viking $28.00 320 pages

You do not need a dog. You can tick off the reasons: you don’t have time or money for a dog. There is no room in your house. You don’t have a yard. You already have a dog (or two). You do not need another but — once you’ve read “The Year of the Puppy” by Alexandra Horowitz — you’ll see that there’s a chasm of difference between “need” and “want.” A dog was not originally in the cards. There were two canines in the household already and, as the founder of the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College, dogs constantly circled through Alexandra Horowitz’s life. Still, the word “puppy” kept surfacing in her early-pandemic mind, until she finally gave in to it. If she could find a puppy, and study it from birth forward, that would be research, right?

And so, Horowitz found someone who was fostering a very pregnant mother dog, and she was able to witness the birth of eleven squirming little “sweet potatoes” with big heads and tiny feet. About two weeks later, she noted that the puppies’

eyes were opening, and she could tell they were starting to hear (puppies’ ears are plugged at birth). She watched the litter as they went from fat little blobs to actual baby dogs, as each showed its burgeoning personality, and as they learned how to be dogs.

So how do you pick one puppy from eleven that you’ve come to know? It wasn’t science for this scientist; the foster “matched” pups with prospective parents, including Horowitz. In the end, after an overnight debate on names, Quid came to live with her new family.

Her presence was a challenge at first:

Quid was a handful, always chewing, always into things, a typical puppy, a hurricane on four legs — but Horowitz could see that Quid was learning and, more importantly, she could see how. Things would take time. Love would come with affection “via the petting hand.”

And, says Horowitz, “That is the magic bit.”

The bed is no longer yours. Neither is the sofa, the kitchen, the bathroom, or the car. Happily, you share them with another species, and “The Year of the Puppy” reminds you why.

It’s hard, in fact, to keep a goofy grin off your face while you’re reading this book because puppies just do that to people — author Alexandra Horowitz included.

And yet (though it had to be tempting), Horowitz doesn’t go completely twitterpated; the litter she studied and the pup she ultimately chose were observed carefully and their behaviors are explained in talks-the-talk language that dog lovers will appreciate. Adding to the charm: Horowitz offers many delightful comparisons between human infants and canine babies, and between Horowitz’ own human pre-adolescent and her growing furry one.

Even for rescue parents who haven’t had a puppy in years, this book will make sense in the data about development and canine adulthood in a way you’ll like. For dog lovers of every stripe and spot, “The Year of the Puppy” is the book you need.

Thanksgiving weekend is recognized as the most heavily traveled weekend of the year. Over the next several days, thousands of people across our state and across the nation will fly or drive to meet up with friends and relatives to share some quality time together. There will be football, lots of food, and plenty of conversation as we catch up on what has been happening in our lives over the past year. Some folks will do some hunting or take a traditional hike through the woods to

help our stomachs settle after a belly full of turkey and all the wonderful side dishes!

Thanksgiving is the perfect time of the year to take a few minutes and reflect on what has happened throughout the past year and what lies ahead. It is a time to analyze the struggles of the past and the hopes of the future, remembering that if you focus too much on the past, it might cloud the promise of the future.

It is a great opportunity to inventory all the good in your life and thus realize all of the bounties that you currently enjoy.

Residing in or visiting Lycoming County

and the surrounding area allows each of us some spectacular outdoor opportunities. From hunting to fishing, whether hiking, biking, or kayaking, and when bird watching, elk viewing, or taking in the splendor of the fall foliage — our “neck of the woods” is very special and unique in many ways.

Need a place to recreate or enjoy your sport? You don’t have to look far.

Within the borders of Pennsylvania, State Game Lands and State Forest Lands encompass more than 3.7 million acres, and they are available for us to use! State Game Lands 335 is located in Sullivan County in the Sonestown area and consists of 49,528 acres — that is over 77 square miles. State Game Lands 75 includes 27,505 acres, extends throughout Lycoming County, and is centered around English Center. Tioga

State Forest, in Tioga County, consists of 160,000 acres.

If you want to forage for wild edible plants and mushrooms in the spring, you don’t have to travel far. If your passion is to fish for native trout in a nearby secluded mountain stream, it can be found in our area. Some of the best whitetail deer, black bear, and wild turkey hunting in the country are right here in our surrounding counties. Accessible logging roads and trails provide the perfect location for a winter hike to locate and identify the tracks in the snow of our resident wildlife.

I believe that I am truly fortunate to have grown up in the rural setting of Northcentral Pennsylvania, to have spent my formative years of education in the Montoursville School District and at Lycoming College,

and to have served in the Air Force, which enabled me to have a greater understanding and appreciation for this unique and magnificent country of ours and my bountiful home state of Pennsylvania. To have had struggles and challenges in the past to work through and learn from has helped me to realize how to better manage the present and the future. I reflect on the past only to recall the lessons learned and recognize how they will aid in successes in the coming days.

There is little doubt that, if you are honest with yourself, doing an inventory of what you have to be thankful for will quickly make you realize just how fortunate you are. Considering your age and stage in life, just what does your personal inventory tell you? I’ll bet that the realization of all of the good

things you have going on in your life will help you put behind you the negative things that we all let drag us down at times. At some point this Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, take time to reflect. After that delicious feast of turkey and all the trimmings, where friends and family surround you, adjourn to your favorite easy chair by the fire in the fireplace. Or wander off on a solo trek along a nearby logging road that brings back great memories of times with family and friends. Then, while you are settled back in the easy chair or pausing on the hike and sitting on an old oak stump — reflect and be thankful. Reflect briefly on the past, inventory all the good in your life, and daydream about the things on your bucket list and the satisfaction that completing your wishes will bring you — Happy Thanksgiving!

It’s kind of interesting sometimes to look back at past hunting experiences; for example, do you remember back in the 60s and 70s when hunting pheasants was very common and taking a limit of birds was not at all unusual. Back then, even without a dog, I would often go out for a few hours and kick brush and work my way along brushy fence rows, putting out ringnecks

and maybe even taking home a couple. As we all know, those days have pretty much disappeared. Changing farming practices and the development of former pheasant hunting territory are likely leading reasons why we no longer have a wild pheasant population here in Pennsylvania. Today we only have stocked birds in certain locations, but back in 1971, the Game Commission reported a peak of 1.3

million birds taken that year. All that being said, however, I recently had a chance to revisit the past. A couple of weeks ago, I got a call from a recent acquaintance, John Bat, who is an avid pheasant hunter. John invited me to go along with him and his hunting buddy Dave Pudlosky for a few

hours of pheasant hunting. I met the guys on state game lands where pheasants had been stocked that morning. Shortly after pushing our way up the brushy hollow, the first shot rang out, and we had our first bird. John and Dave each had a bird before a cock bird busted out of the brush and came across in front of me. I swung my Ithaca 20-gauge pump into action and dropped the bird about 20 yards away — wow, that’s something I hadn’t done for at least ten years.

Hunting these stocked birds did require some walking, and it’s also true that you will increase your chances of success if you hunt with a dog. We probably flushed 12 or 15 birds in the few hours we hunted, and we ended up with five birds between the three of us, but I doubt that that would have been the case without John’s dog. What made this hunt even more interesting is that John’s dog is a beagle. Pointers and setters are usually bird-hunting dogs, and beagles are usually reserved for running rabbits. I found out pretty quickly that when a beagle works a pheasant, it’s similar to pursuing rabbits; there’s no pointing, but when that tail starts moving back and forth rapidly, you better move in and get into shooting posture.

Pheasant hunting in Pennsylvania runs from Oct. 22 to Nov. 25 statewide and then from Dec. 1223 and Dec. 26-Feb. 27. Of course, we are hunting stocked birds these days, but the Game Commission has allocated 170,000 birds to be

stocked before and during the pheasant hunting seasons. If you go to the Pheasant Allocation page at www.pgc.pa.gov, you should be able to find stocking maps at various game lands and allocation updates. Be aware that unless you have a senior lifetime resident license or a senior lifetime resident combination license that you purchased prior to May 13, 2017, you must purchase a pheasant permit at $26.90. Junior hunters and mentored permit holders under 17 need a free permit. It’s not like the good old days, but it sure was fun busting a few of those rare birds that were once a pretty common sight.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Perhaps this tradition-laden late November remembrance is coming at a good time for all of us. Things have not been going all that well in Uncle Sam’s land. Prices are up, longheld traditions are down, social divides are escalating, and not a whole lot of folks can say they are better off than in previous years. But we all can and should get into the true spirit of the brotherhood and thank those Pilgrims and Indians who found common ground to celebrate way back in 1621.

Today, for many, Thanksgiving is all about the three Fs — family gatherings, food, and football. For Jean, it’s the day when the family comes home like they always have. Favorite recipes and dishes make their once-a-year appearance, and the Dallas Cowboys entertain center stage for dessert.

For all you Cowboy haters out there, I am a Thanksgiving Day convert born out of loneliness and a kind Texas family.

During my freshman year at the University of Houston, I was looking at the prospect of spending my first Thanksgiving away from home in a dorm room, dining on a fast-food menu. Most

all the students would be going home for the holiday, except those like me living far away from home. A few days before the big day, I was made aware of an ‘adopt a student program’; by which Houston area families would have a student spend the day with them. That sounded good to me, so I signed up.

That Thanksgiving morning, my host family picked me up at school, and the adventure began. On the way to their home, the husband asked if I was a football fan. Excitedly, I said I was a big fan of the Baltimore Colts, in those days featuring the likes of QB Johnny Unitas, running back Lenny Moore, wide receiver Raymond Barry, and a mountain of a man in 6’6, 306-pound defensive lineman Gene “Big Daddy” Lipscomb, all members of the NFL Hall of Fame. Yes, indeed, the Colts were my team from boyhood.

The response from my host was swift and firm. “Not on this day. After the meal, we’ll all be watching the Cowboys.”

I understood the message and joined the family in cheering on the Cowboys. I’ve been doing the same every year since.

The NFL has been playing games on Thanksgiving since 1920, minus a fiveyear break for World War II. The tradition resumed in 1946, with the Detroit Lions

always playing a home game. In 1966, the league added a second game, and Dallas agreed to host it. In 2006 a third game was added, which NBC has aired since 2012.

Those whose Turkey Day includes football no doubt have some special remembrances, and a few of those popped into my mind.

– Colts QB Peyton Manning threw six touchdown passes in 2006 to beat the Detroit Lions 41-9. My old Colts allegiance liked that one.

– After Roger Staubach went down with a concussion trailing the Redskins 16-3 in 1974, Clint Longley, a rookie from Abilene Christian, came off the bench and led the Cowboys to a last-second 2423 win. His time with the team ended in

1976 when he sucker-punched Staubach in training camp and was released.

– In 1998, the Turkey Day game prompted a change in the NFL rulebook. The Steelers and Lions were tied 16-16 going into overtime. Steelers running back

Jerome Bettis watched the referee flip the coin, calling heads, then quickly changed his mind and called tails. Despite Bettis’ protest, the ball was awarded to Detroit, who kicked the winning field goal on its first possession. As a result of that coin flip, the NFL now requires players to call the coin before it is tossed.

– The “butt fumble” in 2012. The Jets’ QB Mark Sanchez took the snap and, on a busted play, tried to run the ball. He ran into his center’s backside and fumbled the

ball in a play that still lives in NFL infamy. – Leon Lett in 1993, still painful for Cowboys fans. A year earlier, in the Super Bowl, the defensive lineman was running for a touchdown with a recovered fumble. Showboating as he approached the end zone, a Buffalo defender knocked the ball away, preventing the TD. Ten months later, on this day, Lett screwed up again. The Cowboys had blocked a Miami field goal attempt. Lett thought he needed to recover the ball and went chasing after it. He slipped and fell into it, making it a live ball. Miami recovered the miscue at the one-yard line and kicked the gamewinning field goal.

In both instances, Lett’s mistakes were covered up by Dallas victories, and the

team won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993. They won again in 1995, but Cowboys detractors have been quick to point out they haven’t won another one since!

My rooting fervor has mellowed a bit over the years, but the Lowery household game plan for the big day still includes fellowship, food, and football — in that order!

Whatever plans you may have for the day, take time to give thanks and remembrance for the joys you have received, not the ills brought on by others. Perhaps the Pilgrims wouldn’t be able to recognize or understand today’s America they had reached 391 years ago, but you wouldn’t be here if they hadn’t.

Afew teams are heading to the state tournament. We wish them well, and I will keep you posted. Most are gearing up for their winter activities. It is a great time of year. A transition. A new chapter.

My heart is heavy this week. Lots going on, kids. But I feel for my Montoursville chums.

Coach Mike Boughton was a good dude. We shared many friends. Mike and I would say hello before a game that I would call. But I didn’t know him that well. Things quickly changed for Mike and his family after a diagnosis this summer. Mike continued to fight, and I loved how the entire community rallied behind him. Not just Montoursville, but everyone played a part. It was great to see. Football was a distant second. It really puts things into perspective. Unfortunately, Coach Mike Boughton lost his battle with cancer.

“He was an amazing friend,” Montoursville’s Jamie Yonkin said. “Mike

was a great person. He had an incredible ability to see the best in people. Mike was a fantastic coach. He always found ways to get the best out of his players. We are going to miss him.”

Boughton was passionate when it came to football. A stud lineman for Montoursville in the mid-90s. Mike proudly wore the number 77.

He was a big part of the Warrior’s successes. Football was an important part of his life.

Mike began coaching in 2006 and remained with the team until this fall. Boughton wore many hats for the borough. He was on staff during the latter part of Jim Bergen’s great run. Mike served as an offensive line coach during JC Keefer’s tenure. He became the head coach of the Warriors two years back. Mike battled through all kinds of adversity and saw some rather tough days. But Coach never buckled nor complained. Mike remained a Warrior until the very end.

“Mike and I grew up together,” Vince

Reeder stated. “We played every sport, but football really brought us together. We became brothers. Mike was the nicest guy off the field. But he was such a fierce competitor. No one was going to outwork him. He treated every snap, whether it was practice or a game, the very same. He coached the same way. Mike devoted his time to molding young men to be their best. Both on and off. It showed by the admiration and support he had from his players. Mike was a great friend. He’d do anything.”

Boughton loved his players. Past and present. He was very well respected. The Warriors always responded. He was more than a coach. Mike was a great mentor. Boughton made them better. Both on and off the field. He was a class act. Mike Boughton did things the right way.

“Mike was a great football coach,” JC Keefer added. “He was an even better friend. But what separates him from the rest was his loyalty to his team. If there was ever a time I needed help with weight room coverage, help handing out equipment, or someone to attend a rules interpretation meeting — Mike was always there. He used all his vacation time to attend our two-a-

day practices in August. He would do anything for any of his players. Coach Boughton was outstanding. He developed a trust with his lineman. Mike could push them further than anyone else could. They loved him. He had their backs no matter what. Mike was a Warrior.”

The circle of life is hard, kids. And it gets tougher the older we get. I feel for Coach Mike Boughton’s family. My heart also goes out to the Montoursville Warriors. This one was tough. Mike was my age. We shared the same obsession. Wins are nice. But it is what you do off the field or court that measures successes. Congratulations Coach. You made several lasting impacts. Cheers.
