The best thing I can say regarding last week’s midterm elections is that thank goodness they’re in the books, and I don’t have to watch any more political advertising. I have talked to many republicans and democrats, and that was usually one of the first things they said. Before I get to my take on the results, let me share with you the most common thoughts from members of both parties. I will tone down some of the political overtones and try to present this in a nonpartisan way.

There was bipartisan agreement that there was an overabundance of commercials. Political message after political message stacked right on top of each other. Almost all are truly embarrassing to both parties featuring negativity and personal attacks on the opposing candidate. A common thread in almost every conversation I had was how ridiculous the spending has become to be elected to any position. And this is truly a bipartisan problem. I was asked by several to do an article just about what each party and candidate raised and spent during the election. Many mentioned the projected red wave that never really happened.

Some were obviously happy and told me it brought a smile to their face, and some were shocked as they truly expected a red tsunami. Again, this depended upon how you identify yourself politically. Locally one of the most common thoughts regarding the election of PA Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman to the US Senate was, you’ve gotta be kidding me. Many blamed the Republican party leaders for pushing Mehmet Oz on the people.

I heard from one voter he held his nose when he voted. Doc Oz’s campaign seemed to provide easy bulletin board material for the Democratic Party across the state. Former President Barrack Obama, President Joe Biden, and Governor-Elect Josh Shapiro rallied the blue party for Fetterman in Philadelphia.

One point that I probably should have mentioned earlier that I heard often was the complete lies and personal attacks used within the political advertising. I heard this both about Mr. Fetterman and Doctor Oz’s campaigns; I also heard it about a candidate that wasn’t even on the ballot locally. Jen Shukaitis. A lady called me complaining about the ads she ran because she personally

knows Rosemary Brown. She even wanted to know what she could do about these lies the Shukaitis campaign was claiming as fact. My message to her was to turn the channel; there’s not much that can be done when it comes to political advertising and content in the world of today.

I will wrap this part of my column up with a thought that came from a democratic voter.

He could not believe our Nation has come to this and stated he prays for our Nation and our continued freedoms. What the election results prove to me is that we are truly a divided Nation and that both republican and democratic voters fear where our Nation is heading. They are both very unwilling to trust the other party. This especially applies to democrats who stick together through thick and thin. I would have never thought you could have the economic, national security, and job performance problems of a sitting president, no matter of party, and not have a greater uprising.

I think the republicans need to take a good hard look on the national level at who is calling the shots. And why are they not doing a better job of getting

their message out, especially to younger voters? They also need to revisit some of the strong policy stances that alienate different groups of voters.

If I were going to call the election based upon the results locally, across the Nation, and especially on those going to Washington, I would maybe give the republican party a slight edge or an ugly win, as they say in sports. This is based upon them winning back the House and the Senate still being up in the air at press time.

Nancy Pelosi being given a dose of reality and sent packing as Speaker of the House is a good start. However, at press time, as far as Harrisburg, it looks like our state has moved more toward Democratic leadership. Which we all will pay for.

My closing thought is we need better leadership from both parties, and they must figure out a way to return compromise to the table. This especially applies to so many of the issues being used by social media to divide the rankand-file party members.

There’s a much more important election on the horizon, and our Nation cannot continue in the direction we’re heading. Both parties need to purge themselves of those extremists creating the wide divide; this, in most cases, is by those who have overserved their usefulness.

God Bless America.

Holiday Pet Safety

Thanksgiving will be all but on us by the time you receive our edition next week. So let’s jumpstart things early and talk about how to keep our furry friends safe this holiday season. With friends and family visiting and us all being out and about and in and out of the house more this time of year, it’s easy for our furbabies to get into things (or out of things) they normally wouldn’t. So let’s follow this great advice from VCA Animal Hospitals. My own pupperface is having a rough time of it right now as he deals with an ACL issue. We’ll be visiting a VCA Animal Hospital in State College to get him fixed up!

Decorations

Decorations are part of almost every holiday celebration but making some petproofed choices can make your home safe for four-legged guests as well. If you put up a tree (live or artificial), ensure it’s set up securely and use shatter-proof ornaments, ideally hung above tail height and out of paws’ reach. If you have kittens less than 1 year old in your home, they sometimes like to climb up the tree trunk to the top, so extra care may be needed. Hang smaller ornaments toward the top of the tree to reduce potential choking hazards and avoid salt dough ornaments, which may look like a snack to pets but can cause electrolyte problems, and tinsel as it can become lodged in a pet’s gut and cause issues.

Additionally, consider battery-operated

candles instead of real ones, which can be easily knocked over by curious pets and burn them or lead to more serious fire risks. Dangling cords from seasonal decor can also appeal to pets, and if chewed while plugged in could result in electrical shock or burn to the tongue, so secure them out of sight and unplug when not in use.

Food

With the holidays comes a delicious variety of baked goods, chocolate confections and other rich foods. However, some of those seasonal goodies can present problems for pets. For example, chocolate and cocoa contain theobromine, a chemical similar to caffeine that’s highly toxic to both dogs and cats. Ingestion in small amounts can cause vomiting and diarrhea, but large amounts can cause seizures and heart arrhythmias.

Other traditional holiday mainstays such as fruitcakes, breads and cookies that contain grapes, raisins or currants can cause kidney failure in dogs. Sugarless gums and candies may contain xylitol, a natural sweetener, which can cause serious conditions like dangerously low blood sugar and liver failure in dogs. Leftover fatty meat scraps can produce severe inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), leading to abdominal pain, vomiting and bloody diarrhea.

Plants

Although live trees are non-toxic, their needles do not digest well, and their water may contain bacteria, mold or fertilizer that should not be ingested. Additionally, poinsettias, which often have a bad reputation among pet owners, can cause upset stomachs if the leaves are ingested though it’s typically milder than the symptoms associated with holly, mistletoe and amaryllis.

Guests

An increase in visitors, ringing of the doorbell and extra excitement of the holiday season can be stressful for pets. Try to keep your four-legged friend’s feeding and exercise schedule as regular as possible, and make time for additional stress-relieving playtime and snuggles. To help avoid overstimulation, it may be best to keep your pets in their own crates or a quiet room with food, water and comfortable bedding while you have company. If you need additional assistance, consult with your veterinarian.

Travel

Holiday travel with your four-legged family members requires some extra packing and precautions. If traveling by car, make sure your pet is safely restrained using a secure harness or carrier and placed away from any airbags. Make sure pets are microchipped and their registration is up to date in case you become separated. Never leave pets alone in a vehicle or transport them in the bed of a truck. Also be sure you have updated health certificates from your veterinarian, if required by any states you will visit or pass through, and pack copies of medical records, first aid supplies, food and medications, leashes, collars and favorite toys.

One of the most highly anticipated annual events to kick off the Holiday Season in fine fashion will occur again this weekend, November 18 to 20, when the 23rdst Annual Victorian Christmas and related activities are held. The Victorian Christmas Committee presents the event under the auspices of Preservation Williamsport.

The event celebrates Williamsport’s beautiful, charming architectural heritage of vintage homes, mansions, museums, churches, and other public structures.

The Victorian Christmas Committee’s mission remains the same as when the first event was started — to build awareness and appreciation for the rich historical, architectural heritage of the greater Williamsport area and the importance of its preservation for future generations.

The beautification of the historic district with the spectacular floral baskets that grace the period light posts

during the summer months and lighted wreaths during the winter months are made possible by Victorian Christmas ticket sales. The baskets and wreaths are created and maintained by Lady Di’s Floral & Garden Art. Each year Victorian Christmas has a theme, and this year’s is “Arts of the Era ~ Music & Theatre.” This year’s educational talk will be held at Lycoming College in their new music hall. Also featured on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., Ole Bull introduces the Repasz Band for a Christmas evening of music; this is a free event.

Victorian Christmas features events throughout the weekend. For more information and ticket purchases, visit https://victorianchristmaspa.com or https://facebook.com/ victorianchristmaswilliamsport.

Victorian Christmas was founded by members Nan Young, Gloria Miele, Marcia Miele, and Ted Lyons Jr. This year’s committee members are Nan Young, Jill Confair, Mary Jo Bower, Jenny Broaddus, Bethann Campbell, Elaine Decker, Doreen Decker, Jen

VARICOSE VEINS ARE NOT JUST A COSMETIC PROBLEM Varicose veins are caused by a condition called Venous Insufficiency that occurs when the valves in the veins no longer work properly. Over time this leads to the formation of varicose veins and spider veins as well as symptoms of swelling, aching, and heavy feeling legs. Long term complications include changes in the color and health of the skin around the ankle which can lead to difficult to heal wounds. Treatment of venous insufficiency is covered by insurance. County Hall Corner: The Hunt for Red November

Harry Truman held up the famous November 3, 1948 headline on the Chicago Daily Tribune, which stated, “Dewey Defeats Truman,” with a big smile on his face. Last week’s midterm elections might be remembered simi larly. The pollsters were unanimous in their assurance that the Republicans would easily control the House of Rep resentatives and, most probably, the Senate. As the saying goes, they were all sincere, and they all were sincerely wrong.

Lycoming County is consistent in vot ing for Republican candidates. For US Senator, they voted Oz over Fetterman, 67 percent to 29 percent; for governor, it was Mastriano over Shapiro, 64 per cent to 34 percent. US Representatives Dan Meuser and Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson both won handily, as did PA Assembly Reps Jamie Flick and Joe Hamm.

But Pennsylvania is less predictable than Lycoming County, as the Com monwealth tends to swing back and forth between the parties more than other states. The tea leaves from the po

litical gurus were saying that in 2022, the swing was going away from the Democrats and toward the Republicans. Like the rest of the USA, it did not go that way, even though all the signs ap peared to be pointed there. It begs the question — what happened?

This will be discussed and debated for months to come among the election ex perts, but let me offer a few thoughts to get things started.

First, for Republicans to have any chance of winning a statewide race, they must make a dent in the urban counties of Philadelphia, Montgomery, Alleghe ny, and Delaware. Philadelphia County went +65 for Fetterman, and the other

three counties averaged +28. A good number of these were mail-in ballots (Fetterman had 874,000 mail-ins to Oz’s 215,000, a four-to-one advantage). All this accounts for the 200,000 votes that pushed Fetterman over Oz, and there simply were not enough votes in the rest of the Commonwealth to overcome those numbers.

Another element that has not been talked about since the primaries is what could be called the “Trump Fac tor.” Both Dr. Oz and Doug Mastriano would probably not have been on the ballot without the endorsement in the primaries by Donald Trump. For every one who loves Trump, there is at least one (or more) that has exactly the op posite attitude.

Though I personally believe that Meh met Oz and Doug Mastriano were very competent candidates, the pragmatist in me would have preferred candidates that did not carry as much baggage as these two. It might have been very interesting to see how David McCormick or even Kathy Barnette would have matched up to John Fetterman or Bill McSwain against Josh Shapiro. The simple fact is, both Republican candidates endorsed by Donald Trump were fighting uphill battles for their entire campaigns.

On the national stage, the one bright spot for the Republicans on election night was Ron DeSantis, who won re election for Florida governor over Char lie Crist Jr. Crist had served as Florida’s governor from 2007 to 2011 and then became US representative for Florida’s 13th congressional district from 2017 to 2022. Crist is a seasoned politician and was defeated by DeSantis by 20 per centage points! DeSantis appeared to be the only one in the country who swam against the blue wave.

The Republican Party had everything going their way until the actual election on Tuesday, November 8th. They need to change something. The future of the party may be a rather uncomfortable divide between the Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis camps.

But the Democrats will not be able to enjoy this show because they have their own dilemma whether to support Joe Biden for another presidential run and if not him, they will almost be expect ed to support a run by Kamala Harris. B oth of these have poll numbers in the low 40s, and their brand will be hard to change.

It is two years away, but the kickoff will be here before we know it. Bring some popcorn.

Coherence Breathing for Health

Research has shown that some breathing techniques are effective against anxiety, insomnia, stress, and other conditions. One such breathing technique is known as coherence breathing. Coherence breathing involves taking long, slow breaths at a rate of 5-6 breaths per minute. It affects both physiological (parasympathetic nervous system) and psychological (as a distraction technique) factors. As most popular mindfulness techniques for stress reduction rely on breathing techniques, coherence breathing is a simple and safe technique for almost anyone to use. While it is common knowledge that emotions greatly influence the body, few people realize that the opposite is also true. Simply put, the body can influence one’s emotional state. For example, if a person is nervous

or afraid, their heart and breathing rates begin to increase. They might sweat or even get an upset stomach. This is due to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our body’s response to stress. So, in this example, our body responds to the stress our brain’s perceived.

Conversely, if we begin with a psychological response such as a feeling of sadness, we might somewhat alleviate negative feelings just by smiling. In this case, the physical act of smiling can produce a response by the brain to allow us to feel more positive emotions. So, in essence, the mind and the body are connected, and this relationship goes in both directions.

Cardiac coherence is a variation of coherence breathing whereby biofeedback is used to help

coordinate the heart rate with slow, steady breathing. This method was based on the idea that the vagus nerve controls and is associated with many organs. When the vagus nerve is stimulated, the heart rate slows, and the body perceives calmness and relaxes. This adjustment in heart rate can help reduce feelings of anxiety. By using biofeedback technology, the patient is better able to sync breathing with their heart rate as they can observe their heart rate on a screen. Though it is beneficial to use technology to assist with this synchronization, it is not necessary, as practicing breath control regularly can produce similar results.

Breathing exercises such as coherence breathing and cardiac coherence can be practiced whenever a person feels anxious or is facing a stressful situation or but are best practiced on a regular basis. A common method advocated by psychotherapists is the 365 method. It proposes to perform breath work

Though more study is necessary, current research has shown there is a connection between the body and the mind and that the effect they have on each other runs both ways. In an effort to reduce the effects of stress, anxiety, and depression, many people use controlled breathing techniques to reduce or prevent symptoms of a negative emotional state. Coherence breathing is one such technique that has been shown to be effective in treating these symptoms. You don’t have to be an expert; just willing to spend a few minutes each day to get started on a path to calmness and better stress management.

Four grim walls are all that re main of the Jersey Shore High School after the fire that was discovered at 6 o’clock last

night and that in an incredibly short time was a raging inferno through out the interior of the building. By the time the firemen arrived about 6:10, it was realized the structure was doomed. At 6:30 the roof caved in,

carrying with it the upper floor. The fire was under control at 7 o’clock and was completely extinguished by 10 o’clock.

The loss is estimated at $60,000, full covered by insurance.

The school directors meet at 8 o’clock this morning in the offices of Jer sey Shore Trust Company to devise ways to meet the present emergency. Churches have already offered the use of their Sunday school rooms to house the students.

It was 6:15 o’clock when the fire whis tles blew, the alarm had already called

out members of the Independent Hose Co. 1 and the West End Compa ny. Trouble at the telephone exchange accounted for the delay in sounding the whistle. The fire had been discov ered by William Hayes a few minutes past 6 o’clock, an alarm was immedi ately turned in.

The high school is a two-story struc ture and basement. It was erected in 1905 and is referred by the people of the town as the “new building.” The grammar school building next to the high school was erected several years prior to 1905.

November is National Diabetes Month and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the chronic disease affects over 37 million people in the U.S. or about 11% of the country’s population. It’s important to understand what diabetes is and how you can help manage the condition with lifestyle modifications and nutrition.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a health condition in which your body has difficulty with insulin, the hormone that helps sugar diffuse into your cells. The insulin either is not used properly by your body, or your body simply does not have the ability to produce enough.

Three types of diabetes include:

Type 1 – This is the type of diabetes that occurs as an autoimmune reaction or when your pancreas does not produce insulin. When diagnosed with this type of diabetes, it is likely that you will need daily injections of

insulin. Type 1 is usually diagnosed in children, teens, and young adults, but it can develop at any age. It is less common than type 2 — approximately 5-10% of people with diabetes have type 1. Currently, no one knows how to prevent type 1 diabetes, but it can be managed.

Type 2 – This is the most prevalent type of diabetes, and risk factors for developing it can be impacted by lifestyle changes. Your pancreas produces insulin, but your body doesn’t respond appropriately – this is known as insulin resistance. Your pancreas makes more insulin to try to get cells to respond. Eventually your pancreas can’t keep up, and your blood sugar rises, setting the stage for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Gestational – Occurs during pregnancy and usually goes away after pregnancy. This affects how your body uses sugar, similar to the other types of diabetes. If you have a history of gestational diabetes, it is important to discuss this with your doctor. People with a history of gestational diabetes can have higher risk of developing

Tips for Diabetes Management

Taking care of your blood sugar is key to living a normal life with diabetes. Your doctor will support you through this diagnosis and help create a plan to manage your body’s level of blood sugar. Education of this health condition is one of the main ways of staying on top of it. The more you know about diabetes, the better you can take action to prevent complications.

If you are managing diabetes, you can still include a variety of foods each day. Protein and fiber help with blood sugar management. Plan meals and snacks that combine high-fiber carbohydrate foods with protein foods to help prevent blood sugar from going up quickly. Try snacks like peanut butter with apple slices or lowfat cottage cheese with a tablespoon of apple butter to enjoy the flavors of fall. Holidays centered around food can be stressful for people with diabetes. Plan some time to focus on friends and family. Celebrate in ways that

put less emphasis on sweet treats and more emphasis on being together with family and friends. Go for a family walk after a holiday meal or plan a family and friends game night to enjoy being together with loved ones. There is an increased risk for heart disease for people with diabetes. Reduce your risk by choosing hearthealthy unsaturated fats most often. In dishes that call for butter, try swapping for flavorful, heart-healthy oils like extra virgin olive oil, walnut oil or pumpkin seed oil.

If you’re having a difficult time in dealing with new lifestyle changes that are necessary to cope with diabetes, there’s additional help available. Classes, events, and support groups are available to provide extra support and education.

We are getting down to the wire here, folks! EIGHT days until Thanksgiving. Many of us will host, while many will be guests in others’ homes. If hosting, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Thanksgiving is a big meal; when you let guests help, it will make it easier, and you can focus more on other things you will need to prepare for. When hosting, making the meat, mashed potatoes, and having the beverages is the way to go. Let your guest help by making a veggie, stuffing (if not in the turkey), salad, casserole, or dessert.

If you’re a guest and they insist on you not

bringing anything, take a bouquet of flowers, a bottle of wine, or a gift card to show your appreciation. A lot of time and money goes into it, and it’s nice to show them that you are grateful to be invited with a little hostess gift. I think it goes a long way.

When we host Thanksgiving, I like to get everything set up the night before. Start setting the table and get our bar ready and decorated where the food will be placed. I make sure drinks are made and food is all prepared to put into my ovens the morning of. This gives me time on Thanksgiving morning to sit down with my kids and

hubby and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while we have our hot cocoa and toast. This is one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving. I mean, is it even Thanksgiving without the parade? Yes, yes, it is. But the parade makes it feel like Thanksgiving. It’s tradition! I especially get anxious to see ole’ Santa Claus! Kenzy and I patiently wait for his arrival on our TV. Can you ever get too old to be excited about Santa!? I think NOT! When Santa rolls around at noon and the parade ends, the smell of my baked corn, stuffing, and glazed ham fills our home. Bellies are starting to growl, and we are getting excited to spend the rest of our day with family.

Eating Thanksgiving dinner and sitting around the table with family is the best part. Plates loaded to the brim and smiles on everyone’s faces. It’s the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year! Now, my family has a big lunch every year. Then we all go unbutton our pants (or maybe that’s just me?), flop on the couch, and watch a Christmas movie in the afternoon. Another Thanksgiving favorite and a nice kick-off to the holidays. I am sure many of you have Thanksgiving supper, which is lovely too. Here’s another host tip if you serve lunch: Don’t kill yourselves over hors d’oeuvres or apps. Yea, little meatballs are adorable,

shrimp is easy, and everyone loves hot dips, but do we really need all that before the best and biggest meal of the year!? Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t hurt to do a little something if your guests are coming an hour or more before the meal, but you don’t need some big fancy spread before the main meal. If you are having dinner, and people are coming around 2 or 3 p.m., then yea, get the shrimp and meatballs out, man! I totally get that. I’m just saying, don’t stress yourself over apps. Make it simple. Fresh fruit or veggies with crackers and cheese is a great thing to have ready for your guests to hold them off until your supper is ready. Andddd if you have leftover shrimp, get in touch with me. I’ll pop in for a visit before I head over to Southside on Thanksgiving night for the grand opening of Candy Cane Lane. Yup, you got it, another Thanksgiving favorite of mine! Nothing beats ending the night then by seeing my most favorite street at Christmas lit up for the holidays. Belly full of turkey and pie (possibly some shrimp too? Haha), and singing “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” as Kenzy and I drive ole’ Black Betty up and down Candy Cane Lane a dozen times that night. Chris and Tyler are too much in a turkey coma and just go home. Losers. They don’t know what they are missing! They get a little taste when I send them a Snapchat with my big mouth filter singing, “Oh by gosh by golly, it’s time for mistletoe and holly!”

Oh, it doesn’t stop there. I take that puppy clear to the chorus. I’m telling ya, it’s a Thanksgiving tradition for my Snapchat

friends. You just never know what song it could be. It’s a song that typically touches my soul that night and tells you that, indeed, Christmas is officially here, baby!

I wish you could see some of the videos I’ve made. I’m a character (or nuts, either work) and boy, do I love making people’s Thanksgiving night with that beauty. Ahhh, the simple joys and pleasures of Thanksgiv ing. *Insert that famous cheesy smile right here.*

Finally, the turkey. Listen, you season that little bugger how you want, but for me, my perfect turkey always looks wonderful when I bake it like this. Ready?

Dump in 2 cups of boiling water with your 9-12 lb seasoned turkey. Cover tightly. Start a timer when your oven hits 500 degrees F. Bake for EXACTLY 1 hour and turn off the oven. DO NOT open the oven door! Leave the turkey in the oven until completely cool; this will take 4-6 hours. (I do this right before I go to bed, then let the oven cool while we sleep.) It always turns out beautiful. No-Baste. No-Bother. Can’t beat it. And these pumpkin cookies below are the best darn cookies I’ve ever had. Di ane Eck made these, and I went crazy over them! I had to have the recipe to share with you all for Thanksgiving. She is also an amazing cook, and we love sharing recipes with each other. Enjoy!

Self-Care Schedule

Self-care is a term that’s been bantered about for quite some time. It has different meanings for different people. It can and does include mental health, physical well-being, spiritual fortitude, and a sense of safety and security. As we begin to prepare for the rollercoaster of the holiday season, now might be the time to check in with yourself and schedule some self-care practices to offset the upcoming end-ofyear stressors. Routine self-care is also a great way to prevent and combat any seasonal affective disorder that tends to kick in after the holiday hubbub settles and winter looms large.

necessarily cost anything; they aren’t lifestyle specific; they just fall under good common sense. Personal hygiene, such as brushing teeth, taking medication, and combing hair are also forms of basic self-care. Getting clean, feeling fresh, trimming nose hairs — it’s all part of keeping your body healthy and contributing to the general social contract that allows us to participate in society.

Other basic forms of self-care can include using body lotion for dry skin, wearing makeup, and making healthy food choices. In general, basic self-care should be part of your everyday routine while also being specific to your needs.

First, what does self-care look like for you? Many people mix self-care with holistic practices and new-age paraphernalia like sage or crystals. But it can also include basic things like getting enough sleep, drinking eight glasses of water a day, or stretching. Since there is a wide range of activities and methods for self-care, I find it helpful to categorize different selfcare practices in a stratum from basic to indulgent, with a few levels in between.

The basics, as stated above, are solid, healthy daily things, like getting rest and staying hydrated, which would be considered low-stakes self-care. It doesn’t

Next, we have self-care with a bit more intention. These are practices that lean more toward mental and spiritual health. Prayer and meditation are the two big ones. But anything that helps you center yourself, tools you use to relieve or respond to stress, or breaks in the day that make you smile are what I’d classify as intention-setting self-care. This type of care can also be part of your daily schedule: Morning prayers, a midday breath meditation, and reading a book before bed are all examples of how to work

this type of self-care into everyday life. Or it may be deployed as needed. A stressful day at work may find you reading some inspirational quotes before a meeting. Kids driving you crazy? Give yourself a timeout to take a few deep breaths or look up funny parenting memes on your phone. Feeling like no one understands you? Listen to a podcast about your favorite niche hobby or interest. And, of course, seeking professional help when faced with a mental or emotional crisis is essential self-care.

Maintenance self-care deals more with physical well-being and health. This is what you do for your body’s upkeep. Diet and exercise are the two pillars of this type of self-care. And this type also requires the most discipline. Making a healthy meal plan for the week and sticking to it may not be much fun, but it is self-care, nonetheless. Especially with all the holiday deliciousness ahead, having a healthy diet in place beforehand will help offset the sweet goodies and huge dinners coming up. And by “diet,” I don’t mean going on a diet to lose weight; I’m using diet in the sense of typical eating habits. For instance, sticking to the food pyramid’s daily recommended servings would be a diet in this instance of self-care. Only eating grapefruit and cabbage soup between Thanksgiving and Christmas is NOT selfcare; it’s disordered eating.

Exercise is the other big component of

maintenance self-care, and this also takes a fair amount of willpower. Getting up early to go running in the dark, or setting aside time to go to the gym, or even taking an exercise class can feel like such a burden, especially with the limited daylight. But keeping your body in motion, in whatever way you can, is key. I, for one, count cleaning as exercise. The Dyson doesn’t push itself. Use the stairs for bathroom breaks on a different floor. My kids love “brain breaks” in YouTube videos, where they have you do quick bursts of exercise as part of a trivia game. Any movement is part of maintenance.

Lastly, there’s indulgent self-care. Think pampering, think luxurious, think treats! This is where a lot of frou-frou products can come into play. But you don’t need a $60 vanilla-honey bath emulsion or a full-body heated vibrating massage mat to indulge. Take a bath and light a candle, have a glass of wine. Indulgent does have to be, nor should it be, extreme. And luxurious doesn’t mean expensive. You can luxuriate in freshly laundered sheets and sleep in an extra hour on Saturday, which, as any parent will tell you, is luxurious indeed! Indulgent self-care is like rewarding yourself for a job well done or just being kind to yourself.

Hopefully, as we close out the year, we all have some self-care scheduled, if not firmly in place, to take on 2023. Something tells me we’re going to need it.

Danielle Deadwyler in “Till”: A New Gold Standard

Until now, I always felt that Meryl Streep in “Sophie’s Choice” was probably the finest female lead I had ever seen in a motion picture.

But with the recently released “Till,” Danielle Deadwyler sets a new gold standard for what an actress can accomplish onscreen.

Yet, her astonishing work is only one of many sensational performances in this gripping drama about the 1955 lynching of a 14-year-old black boy in Mississippi.

Only son of Chicago singlemom Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett was visiting relatives in the town of Money, MS, when he allegedly smiled at, flirted with, or perhaps even whistled at a young white wife in the local grocery. A few nights later he was forcibly taken from his great-uncle’s home, then tortured, shot, and dumped in the Tallahatchie River, where his body washed ashore three days later.

And what is equally remarkable: Director Chinonye Chukwu takes an extraordinarily restrained approach. With long silences and courageous close-ups at moments of tension and terror, she carefully clamps down on the inherent melodrama in this shattering saga of racial violence and injustice.

Indeed, she does not even show the lynching directly; yet that scene, along with many others in this amazing film, generates a cyclone of emotion; it’s as though Chukwu knew this explosive story — and her tremendous cast — could do its own work, and all she had to do was stand back and let it happen.

Till’s devastated mother then made the shocking and audacious decision to hold an open-casket funeral — and to allow photographs of her son’s badly bloated and disfigured remains. The resulting horror and publicity called nationwide attention to the treatment of blacks in the Deep South — and, according to Wikipedia, it helped pave the way for the American Civil Rights movement, which kicked off only three months later in Montgomery, Alabama.

Deadwyler plays Mamie, cycling through every conceivable emotion from joy and tenderness to howling grief and implacable fury. Jalyn Hall is letterperfect as Emmett, and the impressive ensemble is rounded out by Tosin Cole

Sean Patrick Thomas as Mamie’s faithful beau; Frankie Faison as her father; and, doing some of her best work ever, an almost unrecognizable Whoopi Goldberg as Emmett’s grandma. But really, there is not a false note anywhere in the cast. Even the briefly appearing Money sheriff, the trial judge and Haley Bennett as Emmett’s accuser, are all first-rate. Period detail is likewise terrific, and the whole thing rides beautifully on a lush and throbbing score by Polish composer Abel Korzeniowski.

If there’s a weakness anywhere in this film, it is only in not seeming to provide much closure at the end. Once the trial

is over, Chukwu and her two co-writers don’t seem to know where to go with the story; but then, Mamie was emotionally cast adrift as well. The sense of “is that all there is?” must certainly be intentional — for it leaves us sharing the characters’ loss and frustration, along with the feeling that there is still more work to be done.

With a whopping 98% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes, “Till” is by far the best film I have seen this year; I would love it if Deadwyler scored an Oscar for her unparalleled performance in Chukwu’s masterpiece. But even if she doesn’t — hers is one for the ages.

The baby’s crying, where did you put the remote?, someone called and wants to meet your newborn today, you haven’t slept two consecutive hours in a month, and you hurt in places where you didn’t think you could hurt. You last had a shower... was it Friday or Sunday? Congratulations, you’re a parent, and in “Mother Brain” by Chelsea Conaboy, you’ll

In the months before your baby arrived, you spent all kinds of time imagining what it was going to be like, being a mother. Every baby is unique, you know that, but what about the things you don’t know? What if you can’t bond with your baby immediately? You read the books, you took the classes, you gathered advice, but what does all this mean?

“Science,” says Conaboy, “has given us a whole new way of answering these questions...”

Like most parents of newborns, Conaboy says she was consumed with worry in the “first weeks and months as a mother,” in part because she didn’t feel the “maternal

The

instinct” that she expected to feel. Science, she says, now shows that there’s no flip-of-a-switch when a baby is born, that humans “are, in a very real sense, remade by parenthood” from our neurons on out.

When in labor, the body “often knows what to do.” Parenting needs to be learned.

It just takes time. Fortunately, a “flood of stimuli” from an infant itself “compels” a parent to give care, no matter how exhausted or confused they are. This is the case for both parents, no matter what gender. It happens, even if a parent is experiencing postpartum issues which, Conaboy stresses, are real and miserable.

“In a sense,” she says, “the brain works to keep... babies alive until the heart catches up.”

Says Conaboy, “Attention is the beginning of devotion.” New parents need to be told that they’re okay, that this is normal.

“Frame those words,” she says. “Hang them over the bassinet.”

You can read, and read, and read all you want about newborn babies but all the books in the world won’t tell you every single thing you need to know. “Mother Brain” helps to make sense of this lapse, and it explains what we’re learning.

As a journalist and a mother, author Chelsea Conaboy tells a familiar tale of exhaustion, worry, guilt, and fear when her first son was born, using it as a launching point for the science she then proceeds to share. This is (generally) told in ways that even the most sleep-deprived parent can grasp, although the information can get a little more science-y than you want to tackle. Still, the honesty that’s in here, and the very accessible I-never-thought-of-it-that-way moments will comfort legions of new parents who might need this book now.

“Mother Brain” is the perfect book for parents-to-be, for grandparents, and for friends who want to help. Again, it can run deep but if there’s a baby in your future, you won’t mind.

The Uptown Music Collective, the area’s premier nonprofit school of music, has kicked off its annual campaign, with this year’s goal set at $35,000. The announcement coincides with the September start of the UMC’s 22nd year of providing students with a powerful education that goes way beyond music. The annual fundraising efforts allow the school to

anyone away due to their inability to pay. According to UMC founder and Executive Director Dave Brumbaugh, the Collective committed to two strategies in its early days to make this key principle possible.

One is its scholarship and financial aid program that has allowed some of the school’s finest students to receive a high-quality music education they couldn’t otherwise afford. Since the program’s inception in 2016, more than $137,000 in scholarship funds

The Collective also put a focus on obtain ing alternative sources of income, such as its wildly popular student performanc es, grants to upgrade school equipment, and, of course, seeking donations to offset program expenses, an effort that, for the 2021/2022 school year, accounted for 32 percent of total revenue. The UMC partic ipates each year in several major fundrais ing efforts, including Giving Tuesday, the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania’s Raise the Region and the annual campaign, which typically begins in November.

“Thanks to community support through donations and partnerships, along with the UMC’s continued effort to seek creative

revenue streams and a continued focus on controlling expenses, the UMC has only enacted two price increases in the past nine years and this year is not one of them,” Brumbaugh said. It is more important now than ever to find ways to support the community, added Jar ed Mondell, UMC Assistant Executive Di rector and Marketing Director.

“Keeping our tuition costs consistent, even when the pandemic caused some ma jor hardships for the school, is our way of demonstrating our commitment to our stu dents,” Mondell said. “We understand times are tough for everyone and if we can con tinue to make these opportunities possible for our families, then at the end of the day, we have been successful.”

But the school’s programming wouldn’t

be possible without the generous support of its donors. Funds raised during the an nual campaign and other efforts through out the year help sustain the operations of The UMC Program, Discovering Music: The Early Childhood Music Program and the Adult Music Program (AMP), each strengthening the Collective’s mission to provide exceptional music education and high-impact musical experiences that in still a love of music and an understanding of the importance of discipline, hard work and community.

“Donations of any amount are appreciat ed,” Mondell said. “Funding ensures that our students have room to grow and allows us to imagine a future of growth for the Collective, as well.”

Note: This article is the fourth installment in a series called “Missional Strategy: Why we do what we do the way we do it.” Previous articles are always available at www.webbweekly.com.

Iended my last article by giving you some homework. I asked you to have some conversations regarding Christian unity. I posed the question this way, “What ways-of-doing-things can we employ in our local mission field to increase Christian unity as we seek to be effective channels of God’s saving and

transforming grace?” I hope you had some good conversations. Here’s my two cents.

I’ve been a full-time vocational pastor for 37 years. I have served three congregations in three different communities. In each one, the local pastors tried to increase Christian unity by doing projects together and holding interfaith worship services. I would like to report that those efforts resulted in new and long-lasting forms of Christian unity, but I’m not sure they did. There are likely several reasons, but I think what

I’m about to share could be a possible root of the problem. Living in a time of blessing and protection allows us Christians the luxury of elevating our preferences (sometimes referred to as convictions) above their level of communal importance. We are right to feel strongly about those preferences as we serve our Lord and seek to please Him, but our desire to

project them onto other believers, who may not share the same convictions, is what divides us. Those preferences include the vast majority of things we Christians disagree about:

– Forms and styles of worship. (Traditional/contemporary, liturgical/ spontaneous, pipe organ/ guitars, etc.)

– Church organizational structure. (Denominational/independent, house churches/mega-churches, etc.)

– Moral, social, economic, and political issues. (Abortion, LGBTQ, materialism, environmentalism, capitalism, communism, poverty, wealth, homelessness, etc.)

– Biblical versions (KJV, RSV, NIV, NASB,

MSG) and Biblical interpretations. (Dress, food, drink, modesty, women in leadership, the gifts of the Spirit, etc.)

These are just some of the preferences that Christians elevate. I assure you if following Jesus resulted in severe persecution — arrests, torture, the confiscation of property and children, execution — we wouldn’t waste one moment disagreeing on the vast majority of preferences that divide us. Instead, we would be quietly huddled together in someone’s basement, just being grateful to be in the presence of Jesus Christ and fellow believers — regardless of their preferences. Seriously, we wouldn’t give a rip about all the silly stuff we allow to divide us.

Let me illustrate it this way. As a leader, I often find myself traveling with a van full of people who need to agree on a place to eat. Without fail, some passengers will express their preferences regarding restaurants, menus, and the timing of the stop. When I finally decide and pull into a restaurant, the pouting and complaining begins. You know what their problem is? They aren’t hungry enough.

I’ve discovered something. If you drive by a couple of exits and allow your passengers to get truly hungry, they won’t care where you stop — as long as there’s food. When you’re hungry, you’ll eat anything. If you don’t believe me, then you’ve never been truly hungry.

We Christians are just too fat and happy, so we want everything just the way we want it, right down to the minutia. That’s precisely the reason we are splintered into so many pieces. We know God wants unity — but we want what we want more than what He wants. We worship our appetites, not God. It’s a hard confession to make, but until we’re willing, to be honest about it and make some changes, disunity will continue to be the Church’s biggest missional obstacle.

This isn’t a new challenge for Christians. Paul had to address the preference problem when he wrote to the church in Rome. You can read what he had to say in Romans 14. Take a moment right now to read that chapter. Seriously, read it now. The Church has got to deal with its preference problem, and that won’t happen until we’re willing to face it head-on.

One more thought: there is a difference between a preference and a principle. For too many of us Christians, we confuse the two and get our priorities out of order. So, let’s be clear, a principle is a fundamental truth that serves as the foundation of our faith and unity.

A preference is a greater liking for one thing over another.

You like hymns; another believer likes contemporary songs. That’s preference. You like exegetical preaching; another likes topical. That’s preference. You like to worship at 9 a.m.; another likes it

at 11 a.m. You like pews; another likes padded chairs. You like pipe organs; another likes guitars. You like the King James Version; another likes the New International Version. You like liturgy; another likes spontaneity. These things, and a whole lot more, are all preferences. Principles, on the other hand, are foundational. The Nicene Creed and the Apostles Creed are generally accepted as providing the foundational truths of Christianity. The principles address the nature and sovereignty of God, the nature and redemptive work of Jesus Christ, and the nature and empowering work of the Holy Spirit. That’s it. The Creeds remind us that the principles that

unite us are far more powerful than the myriad of preferences that divide us.

There is one preference, that is a principle. It is found in Philippians 2:34, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value (prefer) others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests (preferences) but each of you to the interests (preferences) of the others.”

Can you imagine what would happen if we Christians actually valued each other more than we value ourselves? It would be miraculously unifying. Until we learn this simple principle, the divided Church will continue to be its own biggest missional problem.

It was not that long ago that we heard about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) occurring somewhere out west, but we never considered that it would ever become a concern within our own borders here in Pennsylvania.

Initially, reports were of limited out croppings of the disease in deer and elk in a few of the western states, but that has all changed as the disease has slowly marched eastward and has gained a foot hold in our state.

The precise location and first occurrence of CWD are not known, but the disease was first noted in 1967 in research on mule deer herds in Colorado. By the late 1970s, CWD was recognized in captive fa cilities in Colorado and Wyoming in mule deer, black-tailed deer, and elk. In 1981, the disease was first identified in the wild in elk in Colorado, followed by mule deer in 1985 in Colorado and Wyoming. CWD spread to captive herds in Saskatchewan, Canada, in the mid-1990s, then to wild cervids by the year 2000.

In 2001, CWD was identified in whitetailed deer in South Dakota wild herds and in a captive herd in Nebraska. In the years following, the spread reached Min

nesota, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Utah, Illinois, Kansas, Virginia, North Dakota, Iowa, and finally reached Pennsylvania in 2012. Today, CWD has been confirmed in 30 states and 4 Canadian provinces.

While CWD was first detected in mule deer, it was thought that transmission to other cervids was not possible, but shortly thereafter, it was discovered in elk. Today, it has been reported in white-tailed deer, mule deer, moose, elk, and black-tailed deer.

Most cases of CWD occur in adult ani mals, are progressive, and are always fatal. Initial signs of the disease are difficulties in movement, followed by an obvious and consistent weight loss over time. Exces sive salivation and grinding of the teeth have also been observed. Increased drink ing and urination happen, which may contribute to the spreading of the disease.

CWD is caused by a prion – an abnor mal form of a normal protein that is most commonly found in the central nervous system but can spread to the peripheral nervous system, thus infecting meat, or muscle, of deer and elk. Research indi cates that prions can be excreted by deer or elk and are transmitted by eating grass growing in contaminated soil. An infect ed deer’s saliva is able to spread the CWD

prions; thus, exposure between animals is associated with the sharing of food and water sources contaminated with CWD prions shed by diseased animals.

Hunters are advised to use standard precautions around animals, such as shooting only healthy-appearing animals, wear ing rubber gloves for field dressing, and washing hands and forearms thoroughly. When processing the carcass, wear rubber or latex gloves and eye protection. Avoid cutting through the skull or spinal cord and use separate dedicated knives, saws, and cutting boards for butchering deer.

Although no current evidence links CWD to human health, it is recommend ed that people do not consume, distrib ute or donate for human consumption a known or suspected CWD-positive ani mal.

Since its initial discovery in Pennsyl vania in 2012, the numbers of reported cases of CWD have been increasing. In 2016, 25 free-ranging deer were positively identified as infected with CWD. In 2017, 78 free-ranging deer were detected in Pennsylvania – more than three times the previous year.

Seventy-five of the free-ranging positives were either within or near the boundar ies of Disease Management Area 2 (DMA 2) in southcentral Pennsylvania, and the other three were within or near DMA 3 in northwestern Pennsylvania. DMA 4 has been added in the Lancaster County area to help combat and monitor the spread of CWD. Today, we are up to DMA 7, which

is, unfortunately, in the eastern part of Lycoming County and portions of sur rounding counties to the east and south.

DMA 7 was established after CWD was detected in a captive facility in Lycoming County and currently covers 462.5 square miles. To see a map of DMA 7, go to www. arcg.is/1G4TLr, where the map can be ex panded for a better view of its boundaries.

Unfortunately, there is no written defini tion of the boundaries listing roadways or waterways to establish the outline. Currently, it is illegal to feed deer within the DMAs.

Hunters are prohibited from transport ing high-risk deer parts (generally the head and backbone) from deer they have taken within a DMA to points outside the DMA. Further, the use or field possession of urine-based deer attractants also is pro hibited within DMAs.

While we once looked at CWD as a problem that only occurred “out west,” it has taken a foothold within our state and continues to spread. As sportsmen, we must pay close attention to this threat and comply with current regulations to do our part in helping stem the expansion of this disease. Take time to become familiar with the signs the infected animals dis play and use common sense precautions in handling any animal or carcass that might be CWD-positive.

Please study pages 32-34 of the current Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest for a comprehensive presentation of the regulations regarding CWD in our state.

Outdoors with Ken Hunter… Late Fall Trout Fishing

Iknow a lot of us are caught up in the fall hunting scene, but every year I have to remind myself that there is still some good trout fishing available after the leaves cover the ground. I managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of trout angling last week along with a couple of buddies, and although I didn’t land any trout, I had the thrill of watching several 18-20 inch rainbows follow my streamer, almost touching their noses. According to a couple of my fishing friends, the last couple of weeks have produced some pretty good action, especially for some good-sized trout.

If you are not used to fishing for trout this late in the season, however, you may want to check out the Fish Commission Handbook for the special rules and regulations that apply to different waters. Certainly, you can still fish the usual streams for trout under the same regulations

that apply in the spring; there are, however, a number of special regulation sections on several streams that also receive a fall stocking of trout increasing your chances of hooking up. These special regulation waters are on Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only stream sections, and our area has several such locations. These special waters include a stretch on Little Pine Creek, one on Loyalsock Creek, another stretch on Lycoming Creek, one on the East Fork of the Sinnemahoning Creek, a stretch on Big Pine Creek, and even a section on Middle Creek.

These Keystone Select Stocked Trout Waters receive a fall stocking of large trout between 14 -20 inches but bear in mind that special regulations apply. Under the Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures, only regulations no trout can be kept from the day after Labor Day until June 15, and only artificial lures may be used with spinning or fly fishing gear. I’ll

be honest when it comes to trout fishing; I definitely prefer fishing artificial flies. I recently spoke with Doug Zehner, also a fly fishing enthusiast and excellent fly tier, about his fall choices for trout. Doug likes fishing nymphs, and like a lot of nymph fishermen, he uses the “high-sticking” method. Doug has had some good late-season success with the Hare’s Ear, Pheasant Tail, and Woolly Worm, often with the bead head added. Mob flies, sucker spawn, egg patterns, and a selection of streamer patterns are part of his

arsenal.

Another fishing friend of mine, Terry Wineberg, has been hitting the special regulation water and has had some pretty good success with some of the bigger trout. Terry told me some of his best action came on streamers and a black Wooly Worm with the gold bead head; does that sound familiar? Terry’s wife, Mindy, is pictured in this piece with a nice eighteen-inch plus rainbow trout she nailed while fishing with her husband a few weeks ago. She took it on a black Wooly Worm with a gold

bead head.

While I prefer trout fishing with flies, that doesn’t mean other lures and techniques won’t work. As I mentioned earlier, these same areas allow spinning gear with artificial only lures constructed of metal, plastic, rubber, or wood, but you may not have natural bait of any kind or bait paste, natural or molded.

I know there is a lot of hunting to be done, but some of my fishing buddies and I are thinking we may find ourselves wading some stream again this fall before the snow flies;

who knows, it might even be after the snow flies.

Girardi Stadium Scott on Sports

Greatness attracts attention.

For longtime Lycoming College football coach Frank Girardi, invitations from two college presidents 50 years removed both began and immortalized the man whose accomplishments will live in perpetuity by the recent announcement that effective September 9, 2023, the Lycoming College football stadium will officially be called Girardi Stadium.

Last month Girardi was invited to a luncheon with college president Kent Trachte to discuss what Trachte had referred to as “some business.” That “business” was to inform the legendary coach that the college wanted to name the stadium in his name.

“I was totally surprised when he told me what they wanted to do,” Girardi reflected. “This is a great honor. When I first was told, my emotions were up and down and all over the place. I am certainly most grateful for this type of honor that has been given to me. I have gotten a lot of emails and phone calls from former players and friends, and that has meant a lot to me and has been really nice.”

In his 35 years on the Warriors sideline, Girardi’s teams compiled 257 wins, including 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and advanced to two national championship games. They were a yearly

power in the Middle Atlantic Conference, winning 13 league titles and earning the coach national recognition via his 2016 enshrinement in the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

The October luncheon with President Trachte brought back vivid memories for Girardi as to how his Lycoming career was launched.

“I can remember it like it was yesterday. In 1972 Lycoming’s president, Dr. Harold Hutson knocked on my front door on a Saturday morning. I was surprised to see the president standing at my door. He said to me, Frank, I want to offer you the head football job at Lycoming. I asked him if everybody else had been informed. He answered yes. We then shook hands in our living room and agreed. That’s how it all started.

“It is going to be something else to have a stadium named after you, but when this is all finished, and you walk into that stadium, it will be for all the Girardis, not just me. I am all about family, and there are so many people that have helped me get to this point. Family and sports form the definition of my life. Two sons have played and coached for me, a son-in-law played and coached for me, two grandkids have played for me, and our daughter was on a championship softball team. It has been about a lot of things, but my association with Lycoming College has

been great for our whole family.”

President Trachte’s 2013 arrival on the Lycoming campus came six years following Girardi’s coaching retirement, but he admitted being honored to be the one to inform the coach of the honor.

“Over the past nine years, we’ve had quite a few conversations, and my admiration for him as a leader, as a person who impacts young people’s lives, and as a family man is growing each time, we’ve had a chance to talk. I have enjoyed getting to know the man.”

Comparing how college football has changed over his many years of involvement, Girardi responded.

“Looking back to that point, the type of football being played through the years has undergone many changes. The wing-t was popular, and then option football came in, followed by the various spread formations. I always believed in having a balanced attack to be able to both run and pass the football. Today, the style of play at the college level has changed to sometimes resemble a track meet. But, no matter what kind of offense a team chooses to run, you’ve got to have a great defense to win consistently.”

Asked if, in life’s quiet moments, he allows himself to reflect upon his accomplishments and what they mean to him, his emotions were evident.

“Absolutely, I do. The College Hall of Fame was a tremendous honor, but a lot of times, the guy in charge gets the accolades, but so many people have helped achieve the successes that an individual has reached. I could say, no, I don’t think about that, but to be honest, I do, and it brings back so many

great memories of the coaches and players with whom I’ve shared this life’s adventure.”

He then offered a personal antidote to a request made by the NCAA following his induction.

“About a week after that Hall of Fame induction, I got a phone call, and they were asking if they could keep the football that I had sent them that had our Lycoming College record inscribed on it. I told them that the ball was something very special to me and I wanted to keep it here with me. They understood. I had also provided them with a pullover that I used to wear on the sidelines, and they inquired if they could keep that as part of the display, so I agreed to let them keep that.”

September 9, 2023 will be a very special time for the entire Girardi clan.

“I’m really looking forward to it because I know we’re going to have a heck of a crowd of alums. I know the stories are going to be flying all over the place. It will be a great time.”

Indeed, it will, and most deserved!

Sporting Matters With Spence… Happy Veterans Day

The 2022 elections are over. Thank heavens. But a few folks think it is still going. Good lord, Johnny. Throw in the towel. Regardless of where you stand. You gotta admit that it was pretty bad. The negative campaigns were extremely annoying. Many of my friends say we are doomed. Several have even mentioned they are selling their farms. That is a bit harsh. I seriously don’t know what to think. Both candidates for Congress weren’t that great. Embarrassing? Perhaps. What’s bad is the aftermath. The finger-pointing continues. Everyone’s an expert and is quick to blame. Enough with the division. Let’s come together and do something positive. It was dark. The sun was shining, but Lycoming County was dim. I entertained several opinions on the future of our great country. Their outlooks were quite negative. I did my best to enlighten. But unfortunately, you can’t have a healthy conversation. Believe me, I tried. And just when I was going to call her quits. Something great happened to renew my faith. Man. I am

extremely thankful for our savvy veterans.

My friends and I helped with a major project at UPMC in Williamsport. It was very detailed, and many agencies were involved. Tuesday was the big reveal. It was a huge deal. A majestic eagle sculpture sits high atop an 8-foot granite pedestal. She is overlooking the magnificent seals of the armed forces. Lights and flags are all over. It turned out amazing.

This shrine was dedicated to UPMC Susquehanna President Steve Johnson, who is soon retiring. He has worked in the healthcare system for 38 years. He also served in the military for 17 years. This tribute was a large collaboration with UPMC Susquehanna, Pennsylvania College of Technology, EP Henry Heroscaping, Susquehanna Marble & Granite, and many others. My column. I take sponsors.

Fred Gilmour, who chairs the UPMC Williamsport Arts Committee, was the brain trust. He and his friend Tony Visco of Visco Architects were the driving forces. They worked hard, and

this tribute took a good two seasons. It required a great deal of planning. Now I personally got some love at the ded ication. But for the record. I had very little to do with this impressive project — sorry, Cowboy. I am just the face of the organization.

“I am indeed very honored and hum bled,” Steve Johnson told several re porters. “So, to all those who are vet erans, to all those who are related to a veteran, to all those who have loved or cared for a veteran, and to all those veterans who are also health care workers, this tribute, this memorial is for you.”

My man John Heist deserves a lot of

credit. He is a master when it comes to working with granite. John was in volved with this tricky project from the beginning. He spent many hours behind the scenes and had a vision.

John never stressed. He made things happen. John is one of my all-time fa

vorite veterans. He served in the Army for eight years and does much to hon or the military locally.

I have known John for five years. Yes. We work together, but I still consid er him as a good friend. John is like the big brother I never had. He is so talented. Forget natural stone. You should try some of his barbecued ribs. John has helped me with several home projects. He has saved the day on many occasions. Really John and I have nothing in common. He knows his tools and wears a tape measure. I don’t. John is not a good golfer. Our views are totally different. We con stantly butt heads in terms of politics.

We coexist. You all can take notice. I am very thankful for our friendship. John is a great dude. And I am so glad that he is a teammate.

I personally would like to thank all of our veterans. Young and old. Near and far. We appreciate your dedica tion and service. You are all better than me. I would especially like to give John Heist and Iron Mike Coledo, my father-in-law, who proudly served in Vietnam, some love. They are two of my all-time favorites. The elections are over. Thank heavens we can celebrate and honor our veterans. Perhaps they will help unite us moving forward. Cheers.
