In today’s world gone mad, we never know what a person is thinking, and we have all heard of incidents of road rage that end in violence. When I have read through reports of these incidents that have turned tragic, often the situation has been escalated by the reaction of a driver that was just minding their own business that day. The person who was first at fault then takes the situation to a whole different level.

I log a lot of miles every year, and I make mistakes, and yes, sometimes I get distracted. I think if most drivers are honest, this just happens. The key and responsibility we all have are to limit the number of times it happens, thus reducing the opportunity for bad things to So,happen.circling back around to applying kindness and positivity while driving. If I make a mistake or am distracted, I wave and mouth ‘I’m sorry’ to the other driver. It was my fault; I wear it. If the other driver responds to me angrily, I wear it; I deserve it. I consider myself fortunate that I wasn’t the cause of an accident and

My closing thought on this topic is about drivers who are under the influence, which can cover a wide variety of things compared to the days when it was mostly alcohol. I think we all have a responsibility to call 911 if we see anyone operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner. And I’m talking about when they are clearly driving erratically. For those of you that may feel uncomfortable about this, just think about what could occur if you do not. There is also the possibility the person operating that vehicle may be having a medical emergency. It could be something as simple as a reaction to prescribed medication, a diabetic issue, or an allergic response. Again, I’m not talking about when someone crosses the dotted center line on I-180 a couple of times; this is when there is obviously a problem.IhopeI’ve provided something for you to think about as you’re driving, but please don’t let it be a distraction. As I often end my articles, let’s all be safe out there. God Bless America.

fall to everyone. There is so much good going on in the world; we all need to find positivity and pass it on with a side of kindness. This especially holds true on the highways. I’m just putting this out there in the most straightforward way possible; everybody makes mistakes while driving. And yes, I know cell phones are the leading distraction. However, what’s most alarming to me is when I witness these mistakes and the reactions by some of the drivers who make them.

witnessed a lady on the Market Street Bridge that covers many of these. The light had turned green, yet the car just sat not moving; fortunately, there was no traffic, so I simply went around her. The driver had a cigarette in their left hand out the window, knees holding the steering wheel, cell phone in their right hand and a breakfast sandwich balanced on the dashboard. Now that is multitasking.Imustmention a frustration heading down the same track but in the opposite lane. When the light just turns green, and the person behind you lays on the horn like you’re in a drag race and should have been off like a shot.

Yes, I usually cuss to myself, but then wave that left hand, smile, and mouth; ‘it’s OK.’ If they ignore me or behave like I mentioned earlier, I just continue on my way. Again, thanking God that I can just continue on my way.

The much more worrisome actions are when somebody gets on your rear

Think about the most dangerous encounters we all have while driving. It is when somebody cuts you off, runs through a yield or stop sign, turns left and cuts across traffic in front of you, turns the opposite way of what their turn signal is telling you, and crosses into your lane head-on. Or one I’ve seen way too much of this past summer, for whatever reason, is going the wrong way. These obviously are some of the most serious infractions, and I’m going to give the driver the benefit of the doubt — they happened accidentally.Weallcan also make a list of everyday occurrences that are annoying. These are usually the result of someone being distracted while behind the wheel. I

Now back to what’s most alarming regarding the driver who makes a mistake or is distracted. They scream at the other driver, who has done nothing and possibly avoided a crash by the quick reaction. They give the death stare as if to say, that was your fault, *expletive*. They give the one-finger salute, shake their fist, and by reading, lips say words that I don’t even know. Often, it’s a combination of all the above; remember, this is by the person that has made a mistake or is distracted.

week, which is currently this week for me as I’m writing, has been busy. You’ll notice a larger-than-average paper this week. We’ve got 104 pages of Webb Weekly for you!

I’m sure you are starting to get curious as to where I’m going with all this. And if not, that’s fine, you are probably just used to my rambling, but I do have a point, I swear. I’m sharing all this because Wednesday, September 21st, is World Gratitude Day. And these are just a few things I have been thankful for — and therefore want to show gratitude for — recently.

Spooky season is right around the corner, and I know there is some fun on the horizon for that! Now,

This, of course, includes our yearly Fall Home Improvement section. So if you have any fall projects on the horizon — indoors, outdoors, DIY, or needing a pro — we’ve got you covered in that section! Be sure to check it out!

According to nationaltoday.com, “Appreciation is a worldwide practice today and a personal one that we can all use to improve our lives — but it goes back to 1965. World Gratitude Day was invented by Sri Chinmoy, a spiritual leader, and meditation teacher. It was conceived at a Thanksgiving dinner in the United Nations’ meditation room.

“At the dinner, Chinmoy suggested the idea of a global holiday of gratitude. Each person at the dinner pledged to hold an event in their home country every year on that holiday, and they all spent the rest of the evening discussing how they might spread the word about this new holiday. The following year, in 1966, many countries observed the first annual World Gratitude Day on September 21st, and the day has been celebrated annually ever since.”

Putting out over 100 pages of Webb Weekly in a single week is no easy task, so shout out to our staff and, of course, our wonderful customers for all working together to get everything done!Asof Thursday, it’s officially fall! I was lucky enough to have a pretty incredible summer. We hit amusement parks and a water park, spent time with family and friends, enjoyed some new breweries, and spent time downtown enjoying what our great little city has to offer. I got to head back over the hill and back to the Little League World Series. Oh! And I got engaged!

I don’t think there is ever a wrong time to show gratitude for the things you appreciate. From the little things to the big, taking time to be thankful for what you have does us all good.

You don’t need a special day to show gratitude for the things in your life that are good or even those in your life that aren’t so good but make you appreciate the good things more. Or for the people in your life that you love and care for. But if having a special day set aside helps you along to take the time to show and feel that gratitude, love, and appreciation, then more power to you!

It’s been an actionpacked summer, and I am super excited to see what fall has in store!

It’s easy to get caught up in everything going wrong in our lives and the world. Taking a step back to be grateful for all we have, is a great way to take just a little bit of the weight off those tough times.

Over the Edge Global supports non-profit organizations in running unique, profitable and exciting urban rappelling fundraising events. Since 2008, they have helped non-profits around the world raise over $100 million.

Throughout Lycoming County and Northcentral Pennsylvania, the YWCA’s focus is on helping people build better lives. They do this via the services of their Liberty House and Wise Options programs.

For the River Valley Regional YMCA specifically, the funds raised by the courageous rappellers will go to support programs and services that are made available for all within our community. Officials appreciate each individual who has committed to going Over the Edge for the RVR YMCA and are excited to see the impact their dollars raised will have on our communities. There are six branches that make up the RVR YMCA, and this year they have rappellers participating from not only Lycoming County but also Clinton County and Tioga County.

The YWCA of Northcentral PA is also looking forward to this year’s event. The money raised for the YWCA will go towards the many programs that the YWCA has to support women and families in need. The YWCA is the oldest and largest women’s membership movement in the United States. There are 312 YWCAs across the country, representing two million women, girls, and their families.

Greg Hayes, Executive Director of the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation, believes the “Over the Edge” fundraiser has been very beneficial to this organization. “The education foundation is happy to have been able to partner again with River Valley Regional YMCA and YWCA Northcentral PA. In particular, the foundation is grateful to those who have spent the last several weeks and months fundraising on our behalf to secure their rappel spot. We’re

In conjunction with this year’s Over the Edge event, the 1st Annual UPMC Community Block Party will be held. This event will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on West Fourth Street and Elmira Street in Williamsport. There will be food trucks, health information, live music, prizes, vendors, a kids’ zone, and more.

Very simply, because the Queen or King represents their country. The tradition goes back over a thousand years, and though it is an antiquated, anachronistic, way past its expiration date tradition — the Brits still love it! It is worth reflecting on why.

The United Kingdom is the proper name for the countries of England, Wales, and Scotland (known as Great Britain) and Northern Island. This federation, known as the United Kingdom, is a constitution al monarchy. That seems like a strange definition, given that the reigning mon arch has no responsibility for making any open political decisions. These are all done by the government and Parliament. So it begs the question — why is the gov ernment of the United Kingdom known as Her (now His) Majesty’s government?

Think about the United States for a mo ment and ask yourself what represents our country. Immediately the American flag comes to mind. At the recent 9/11 Memo rial Ride, virtually every motorcyclist had a flag on their bike if not more than one.

Does any other country have an image as powerful as the six US Marines raising the American flag on the top of Mount Suri bachi at the Battle of Iwo Jima? Benjamin Franklin realized this from the beginning. Legend has it that a woman asked him as he exited Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention in 1787. “Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?” Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

Compare this with Queen Elizabeth. She became Queen in 1952 at the age of 25 with the passing of her father, King George VI. Since then, the Queen has met every US president, from Truman to Biden, with the exception of Lyndon Johnson. Think about that for just a moment. Imagine how different those fourteen presidents were from one another, yet they all represented our country. Our presidents are received very differently in the world based on their politics, but the British royalty is always treated around the world like — well, royalty.

Let us acknowledge that the British have something special that has served them well. We have nothing like that in the United States, nor should we. Our birth as a nation was entirely different. We have to work harder to maintain our heritage, values, and rights because the symbols of our nation are not alive. We have to give them breath. We must remember when we see our flag or iconic buildings or monuments that they celebrate our history and the best of who we are. And this must never be taken for granted.

Sarah Ferguson, frolicking half nude in the tabloids. And oh yes, her official residence, Windsor Castle, burned down that year. Yet when asked about all this, she replied, “1992 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure.” That is class. This is why the British loved their Queen so much; she kept them centered, and she never wavered no matter what. The great British novelist and scholar C. S. Lewis explained this, “Where men are forbidden to honor a king, they honor millionaires, athletes, or film stars instead; even famous prostitutes or gangsters. For spiritual nature, like bodily nature, will be served; deny it food, and it will gobble poison.”

And consider how Queen Elizabeth has represented her country. Her image is on stamps, coins, and bank notes that have been circulated around the world. In countless public events, she exemplified the attributes of duty and responsibility with the utmost dignity and grace. Her role was to promote her country, and she did it well, possibly meeting more people than anyone in history. She was not expressing herself as Queen Elizabeth — she was the very embodiment of the United Kingdom.

Through seven decades of wars, tragedies, and crises, the Queen was a rock that would not be moved. And beyond that, she did not allow her personal concerns to impact her service to her country. For example, in 1992, her son, Prince Andrew, divorced, her daughter, Princess Anne, separated, her son, the heir apparent, Prince Charles, separated from his wife Diana, and just to add a little more misery was the daughter-in-law,

Dead Sea is locat ed on the boundary between Israel and Jordan. Its northern shore is about 16 miles east of Jerusalem and 104 miles south of the Sea of Galilee. The Jor dan river flows from the Sea of Galilee into the Dead Sea.

See FAITH on Page 14 Faith Conversations…

The surface of the Dead Sea is 1,388 feet below sea level, making it the low est place on planet earth. The fresh water of the Jordan river flows into the Dead Sea but then has nowhere to go. Its only outlet is evaporation.

The Bible most often men tions the Dead Sea as the east ern boundary of the Prom ised Land. It is also called the Salt Sea, the Sea of Arabah, and the Eastern Sea. Ezekiel 47 provides a rather astonishing prophecy of the Dead Sea one day teeming with life.

ble unless the toxin is removed. The sea is about 50 miles long and 11 miles wide, and its deep est point is 997 feet. Today, its surface area is about 234 square miles, but in 1930 it covered 410 square miles. It is receding so quickly that efforts are being undertaken to stabilize its water level. Not only is it toxic, but the Dead Sea is also dying. Toxic ity and death: that’s what hap pens when you’re at a dead end.

Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34. He also said, “Freely you have received; freely give.” Matthew 10:8.

A Dead-End Dead Sea

The

The Dead Sea is an apt illustration of what happens when God’s love flows into us but doesn’t flow out of us to others. We were not created to be love’s dead end. Instead, God designed us to be free-flowing, constantly carrying the love we have received to others. That constant flow is what keeps us fresh and full of life. When love doesn’t flow out of us, we become toxic, devoid of life, and dying. According to Dickens, that was Ebenezer Scrooge’s problem. The flow is what keeps us alive. The same is true with blessings. God doesn’t bless

If you’ve ever made maple syrup, you know the longer you boil the sap, the more concentrated it becomes. For the Dead Sea, the result of thousands of years of evaporation is a toxic concentration of minerals and salt that cannot support life. Its salt content is ten times greater than that of ocean water. No marine life can be found in it, and its salt is so heav ily tainted with bromide that it is inedi

us with more so we can keep more; He blesses us with more so we can give more. When we hoard the love and bless ings God has given to us, we become a dead-end dead sea. Jesus warned us about hoarding when he taught the Parable of the Barns in Luke 12:13-21. He introduces the parable by saying, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not con sist in an abundance of possessions.” What about you? Do love and bless ings flow through you to others, or are you a toxic and dying dead end?

Ask yourself, am I a dead-end dead sea? Am I imprisoned to fear? Am I constantly seeking to prove my val ue to myself or others? Am I selfish ly seeking power? Am I a scrooge?

Power: Some people are greedy because they want to take power for themselves. Power selfishly taken always produces a toxic culture of bondage and misery. True power cannot be taken; it must be given by others. When rightly given and utilized selflessly, power has the ability to produce a healthy culture of freedom and purpose for all. Is taking power really worth hav ing everyone in your life despise you?

Your answers to these questions may explain why your life is filled with stress and worry and why your existence is lonely and toxic.

Like Scrooge on Christmas day, your life can change immediately — and a gener ous and joyous heart can quickly over come greed and bitterness! Let God’s love and blessings flow through you to others, and you will finally be set free. Selfless generosity is the cure for a dead-end dead sea existence.

Comparing: Some people are stingy because they want to appear more suc cessful than others. They think success is proven by how much they own. They couldn’t be more wrong. True success is not found in what we keep but in what

we give away. Consider this: everything you keep must be secured, protected, and maintained. Gathering and keep ing stuff causes a lot of work and worry, while generosity produces joy and free dom. Is trying to prove your value re ally worth all that stress and bondage?

Greed is the problem — and it is most often caused by:

FAITH

Fear: Some people are greedy because they fear the future. They constant ly worry, asking themselves, “What if I don’t have enough?” If that’s you, read Matthew 6 and the Parable of the Barns. Jesus wants you to stop worrying about your future on earth. Our time here is so very short. Why are you putting your hope in things that rot and rust? Instead of worrying and hoarding, He encourag es us to store up our treasures in heav en — where we will enjoy them forever.

morning I awoke to a gloriously chilly 55 degrees, misty fog, and the banging of garbage bins as sanitation workers made their way down the street. Such is life. A mix of the superb and the mundane, which is an oddly apt way to describe the transition from summer to fall. You have those cool mornings followed by sweaty afternoons. Vivid sunsets that burn to signal the days are getting shorter and that seasonal affective disorder may be on the horizon.

This

One day the routine runs like clockwork, and the next, you’re in your robe, dragging your kid to the bus stop. Are their teeth brushed? Who cares?

With all the activities, the resets, and natural beauty around us, figuring out what to wear may be the last thing on your mind. However, one of the best parts of fall for many of us are the sweaters, boots, and jackets getting dug out of their summer storage. Even if you’re all set with a fall wardrobe, there may be a few key pieces you’re missing and outfit combos to consider to spice up your look to match your pumpkin spice latte.

Hoodies are another outerwear essential for fall. I love the idea of taking a traditionally sporty staple from athletic to something more luxe with a knitwear, as opposed to a sweatshirt-y zip-up. You can wear a cozy hoodie with jeans and sneakers running around on the weekend. Then switch up your workwear with baggy trousers and loafers, and layer a hoodie underneath a blazer. Over-the-head hoodies also work under jackets with jeans or joggers. I prefer hooded sweaters in neutrals like black and grey. But fall is a great time to experiment with colors, so consider richer shades like ochre, plum, or burgundy for a knit hoodie. I’ve mentioned jeans a few times in some of the suggested outfit combinations above. This fall, you may find black jeans are

Imagine your favorite long cardigan and coat got together and made a baby; that baby is a coatigan. You can wear a coatigan over a striped shirt, flared jeans, and boots for day. At night, pair it with your favorite summer dress in early fall, then swap it for a sweater dress as it gets cooler in the coming months. I prefer a coatigan with closures, either buttons or a zipper, but many long cardigans hang open, so it’s really a matter of preference. Just be sure to pick up one with pockets.

becoming the backbone of many outfits. I rarely wear jeans during the summer, but when there’s frost on the grass and leaves start to turn, denim is back on the menu. Black jeans are great for both day and night, as they can be a stand-in for both black trousers and a little black dress, depending on how formal the occasion is. Wear black jeans with an oversized cardigan (maybe even that coatigan), a striped tee and loafers for a casually collegiate-inspired look. Or tuck them into high knee-high boots and top them off with a romantic floral blouse and gold jewelry for a grounded boho outfit. Of course, black jeans and buffaloplaid flannel are a classic fall combo. I also love that you can wear black jeans with a denim jacket to avoid a Canadian tuxedo of Withdenim-on-denim.jeanscomes T-shirts, and every wardrobe should have at least one white tee on hand. White cotton T-shirts are extremely versatile and can be worn as part of just about any outfit. This fall, I’m gravitating toward oversized white tees, as well as fitted V-necks. I’m thinking of a baggy white tee with joggers, sneakers, and a bomber or denim jacket for a sporty look with a bit of edge. Or tucking an oversized crewneck into a high-waisted skirt with boots and a trench coat for a chic fall ensemble. A more fitted T-shirt can be worn with trousers and a blazer, or underneath a summery sleeveless dress. And you can just wear it on its own with

is a historically busy time of year, so having essential pieces and outfit ideas lined up can make those crisp mornings a bit less frantic and helps to ensure everyone leaves the house with brushed teeth.

look.Fall

For footwear, I’m leaning heavily on sneakers. Yes, boots are quintessential for the season, but they can be heavy and kind of clunky. Sneakers, or as the Brits call them, trainers, have been making their way out of the gym and into daily, even formal life. A black Van-style slip-on can be worn like a black flat or dress shoe. While a chunky New Balance or Adidas-type sneakers can swap places with loafers or heels. I love the idea of styling a conventional outfit, like a suit and button-up, with a chunky sneaker. Layer in a hoodie and strap on a crossbody bag, and you’ll have several fall essentials, creating a fun and unexpected workwear

jeans and flats.

As for accessories this fall, you’ll have your standard scarf, hat, and gloves later in the season. For now, I’ve been eyeing up some crossbody bags. For many, a bag is a functional element of your outfit, not necessarily adding or taking away. Crossbody bags can bring a fashionable edge to an otherwise basic look, especially those with a cool, guitar-inspired strap. Plus, they create a new silhouette going across the body. This may not be what you want in formal or more elegant outfits, but it’s perfect for a casual layered look for fall.

King’s Funeral a Gorgeously Solemn Affair

body of Edward VII, late King of England and foremost of the rulers of the earth, was laid to rest today in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, where seven other British kings are buried. It was the most imposing funeral the world has ever seen, and literally speaking the world did see it, for nine ruling monarchs, the official representatives of other great powers, and a host of lesser royalty, including the heirs apparent of many world’s thrones, took part in the obsequies. The worldwide note of grief that held the city dumb through the solemn cortege through the streets was more eloquent that Edward dead was even greater than Edward reigning.

think I ever even heard him say the word zucchini, and I’ve been with him for twentythree years. “OK, babe, I’ll make you banana bread sometimes, but no promises on the zucchini.” I didn’t have a recipe for either. I had to search.

Of course, I could do it myself, but there is nothing like your momma’s cooking/baking. I guess I should get that recipe, though, and share it with you all very soon.

I asked him what it was, and he explained to me that he loved banana bread and zucchini bread.

I hadn’t had banana bread in years. How perfect that I had a few bananas ready to start turning any day now. That Monday, I made ham in the Crock-Pot. I rubbed a brown sugar glaze on it every hour. It smelled heavenly. Corn was husked and ready to put in a pot of boiling water. Cheesy broccoli rice casserole was prepared the day before, a watermelon was cut and chilled in the fridge, and those bananas were ready to be formed into a delicious bread.

afternoon when my husband got home after work, he went to get a snack. By 3:45, he is ready for something to eat before dinner, which typically every night is about 6:00. I buy him the little chocolate chip muffins from Aldi’s that he loves with his morning coffee. These one-bite wonders are perfect for fast mornings and an afternoon snack. We got to talking about these muffins, and I said to him about making him homemade ones. Of course, he loved that idea. I told him blueberry ones were my favorite with the sugar crumb top. Chris doesn’t love blueberries like I do, so he prefers chocolate

As Chris and I were talking about muffins and how he would like me to make him ones homemade, he then said, “You know what else I love, and you don’t make?”

• 1/3 cup butter, unsalted or salted, melted

Mix in the remaining ingredients: Mix in the baking soda and salt. Stir in the sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla extract.

Banana Ingredients:Bread

• 1 - 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Mash the bananas and add the butter: In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until completely smooth. Stir the melted butter into the mashed bananas.

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

As he opened the oven door, he stopped and looked.“Um.Is that what I think it is!?’ he asked. I told him I had promised him banana bread and wanted to surprise him. He was very appreciative. His smile said it all! We all enjoyed a warm slice with butter for dessert. It was delicious! But honestly, it was even better as the days went on. Now, those days didn’t last very long because the bread was gone by day four, but I loved the recipe I made for it. It was so easy, smelled divine baking, and had such a great flavor that you honestly didn’t even need butter on it!

• 3/4 cup sugar (1/2 cup if you would like it less sweet, 1 cup if more sweet)

Directions:

• 1 large egg, beaten

Preheat the oven to 350 and spray an 8 by 4-inch bread loaf pan.

Mix in the flour and pour into a bread pan. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes at 350, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. A few dry crumbs are OK; streaks of wet batter are not. If the outside of the loaf is browned, but the center is still wet, loosely tent the loaf with foil and continue baking until the loaf is fully baked.

HOME COOKIN

• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (not baking •powder)1pinch salt

• 2 to 3 medium overripe bananas peeled

Chris had no idea that I had made it. When 6 p.m. rolled around, everything was about done. My husband and kids were washing up while I was getting last-minute things on the table. Chris asked what he could do to help. The cheesy broccoli casserole was baking in the oven with the bread. I said to him about grabbing the casserole out of the oven for me knowing he would see the bread in there.

Now, who has a good recipe for zucchini bread out there? I’m on the hunt to surprise my man yet again with that veggie bread. I just want to know who the person was out there that decided to try putting a boring zucchini in bread. Maybe it’s the same person who invented carrot cake? I have to say; I do love me some carrot cake. Zucchini bread is yet to be determined.

Dr. Sciamanna writes, “During the pandemic, when my gym closed, I had to figure out how to do strength training at home. I started doing push-ups and squats each day, but after a few months, my arms were actually getting smaller. After reviewing the research, I saw that the studies all said you could get stronger in just a few minutes using exercises that worked multiple muscles.” Sciamanna goes on to say that he was unhappy with the equipment available for purchase. As most fitness equipment took up a whole room, he decided to make his own. Ultimately, he designed a bag that could be loaded with small bags of sand so that weight could easily be adjusted. “I realized that I’d made the only home gym designed to give

The Faster Workouts program includes exercises like deadlifts, squats, rows, and swings. The entire workout lasts just 5 minutes. Sciamanna uses one simple rulewhen you can perform ten repetitions of an exercise, add 2.5 pounds. Over the course of 6 months, Sciamanna, who is in his 50s, worked his way up to doing push-ups with 80 pounds on his back and using the same weight for bicep curls. He writes, “I’m done in just 5 minutes and, no matter how hard I try, I can’t come up with an excuse not to do a 5-minute workout. I figured I wasn’t the only one who might want to get stronger in just 5 minutes with a compact home gym, so here it is.”

Among the research, Sciamanna cites to support his methods is a 2017 meta-analysis by Grant Ralston et al. published in the Journal of Sports Medicine. In the study, Ralston and his colleagues determined that rel atively higher intensity exercise was more effective than very light resis tance training, even for beginners. So, put away those 1 lb weights that

college. “Guys on my floor were go ing to the weight room, so I decided to tag along.” Initially, he wasn’t sure why he stuck with it, but over time he got hooked on the progress, he was making. “Every month, I could do something that I had never done before. Even though it didn’t really matter – it sure felt like it did. It just felt great to be strong.” During his residency in Internal Medicine, he became fascinated with why people didn’t take better care of themselves. So, after his residency, he decided he would try to learn more about ways to get people to take better care of themselves. This pursuit led him to Johns Hopkins, where he performed research in public health.

you can curl for days and strive for a weight that you can lift for no more than ten repetitions. Then, add a small amount of weight when you are able. “I started Faster Workouts be cause I started to realize that, though exercise is as strong as a drug, the business of exercise is very different. If you create an amazing exercise pro gram, even if you prove that it cures cancer, because you can’t really patent exercise programs – it is very unlikely that the public will ever get access to your program. So I decided to start Faster Workouts to bring to the public what I thought was the best idea I’ve ever seen in exercise, that workouts as short as 5 minutes, three times a week, can build strength, fitness, and – for older adults – the freedom to do whatever you want.” For more infor mation about Faster Workouts, Dr. Sciamanna can be reached at chris@ fasterworkouts.com

In 75 years, many things have changed at C.H. Waltz Sons, but some things still remain the same. The company has grown significantly over the past couple of decades. There are now four full-service dealerships under the C.H. Waltz Sons name. The Cogan Station store took on a major expansion project in the 90s. Then in 2007, the second dealership opened in Dallas, PA, followed by a Winfield, PA dealership in 2011 and the fourth dealership in 2016 in Bloomsburg, PA. “We provide the best equipment brands on the market, but the thing that remains the same despite our growth is the personal touch we give our customers. To celebrate 50 years in business, Kubota produced a limited 50th-anniversary line of tractors. C.H. Waltz Sons sold its 50th-anniversary tractor, a Kubota L6060HSTC-50, this September to Steve and Andrea Kriner, who own a farm in Montoursville. The tractor has a metallic orange finish, includes a cab with heat, AC, and radio, and is sold with a loader and a Landpride snow blade. “I’m very excited for the cab with the radio. It’s nice to sit in. And the color is stunning,”

This year isn’t just a big milestone for C.H. Waltz Sons. Kubota (Kubota Tractor Corporation), their main equipment brand, is celebrating 50 years in business in the U.S.A. The Kubota brand was founded in the late 1800s in Japan, but it wasn’t until 1972 that Kubota sold its first tractor in the United States. Since then, Kubota has expanded its operation in the United States, including corporate headquarters in Grapevine, Texas, several manufacturing and parts distribution factories, and R&D facilities. “Kubota is a solid brand of tractors. They invest in new technologies, give back to their communities, are eco-minded, and still believe in the dealership-customer relationship,” said Deanna, “We choose brands we

can stand behind and who stand behind us. We are able to talk directly to top management at Kubota headquarters and share our customers’ concerns and problems. Changes have been made because of that relationship.”

After the last several months of draining heat and humidity, you really feel like getting outside, going for a hike, and getting your lungs filled with the fresh, clean air that is ever-present during the months of fall.

Various puffball mushrooms are edible and quite tasty, but as always, when foraging, make sure you positively identify what you are seeking. Numerous books and an untold number of YouTube videos can help, and foraging is just one more way to enjoy your time outdoors.

Over the years, in an effort to improve habitat for wildlife, I have planted numerous soft and hard mast tree seedlings, and this last spring, I discovered a new problem with some of them. Over the winter months, voles and field mice chewed an

have done last fall. At a distance of 3 feet all of the way around the seedling and its tube, apply a herbicide such as Roundup (no, I don’t like using chemicals if I can help it, but it is simply the best way to save your seedlings from being destroyed) and after the vegetation has died, use a weed trimmer to completely rid the circle of all dead grass and weeds. Creating this circle that is totally devoid of any vegetation will discourage the rodents from making nests in the tubes. I hope you are one of those folks that love the fall as much as I do. If so, do the final season’s mowing of the lawn, gather your supply of firewood, do a final preparation of your seedlings for the winter and then pick up a shotgun, a fishing rod, or a hiking stick and get outside and enjoy the fall!

excellent firewood. It cuts and splits easily, easier than most hardwoods, and produces more BTUs than many of the other hardwoods. After the last couple of years of gypsy moth devastation accompanied by recent drought conditions, there may – in the near future – also be a number of the various oak trees that will die and be an excellent choice for firewood. With rumblings about just how cold and snowy this coming winter may be, now is the perfect time to cut, split and stack your winter’s supply.

entry hole in the tree tubes, built a nest of dried grass, and then enjoyed the winter months in their greenhouse-like home. The problem arose when they decided to chew the outer bark of the young seedlings, essentially girdling all the way around the trunk and killing the tree! I must admit that the reason it happened was completely my fault. The previous fall, I had failed to kill or cut down the grasses and weeds in the area at the base of the seedling and tube. With tall weeds and grass surrounding the tube, the rodents felt safe to tunnel across the mowed grass nearby and into the tall cover surrounding the seedlings since they were hidden from view from aerial or ground predators. So,here’s the remedy and what I should

With fall just getting underway, it is the ideal time (in between hunting and fishing, of course!) to gather firewood for the soonto-be-upon-us winter months. Because of the recent infestation of the emerald ash beetles, our hillsides are now left with an abundance of dead ash trees. It is sad to see various tree species being wiped out from time to time, but the upside to all of the ash tree destruction is that ash makes

This type of environment is a favorite for black snakes since they feed on rodents, chipmunks, amphibians, young birds, other snakes, and, yes, eggs. Black snakes are often found around outbuildings, wood piles, brush piles, and field edges because that’s where they find much of their food source. Black snakes are constrictors; that is, they suffocate their prey by wrapping around and squeezing until dead, then they swallow the meal. Adults may only eat once or twice a month.

By the way, a common garter snake does the same thing, and that smell is even worse, in my opinion.

To be honest black snakes are really quite harmless. Yes, they will strike and maybe leave some scratches, and they even rattle their tail like a rattlesnake, but they often settle down after being captured. Probably the worst thing is they will sometimes emit a foul odor to drive predators away.

This column was written before last Friday’s Lancer challenge with Danville. Still, should they arrive at week five undefeated, they could have smooth sailing until late season meetings with Troy and Montoursville.

The early season has featured impressive showings by Jersey Shore and Canton as the two powerhouses have rolled over their opposition. The Bulldogs destroyed perennial nemesis Selinsgrove in week three 63-0, allowing the Seals no first downs and 14 yards of total offense. In their first three games, they outscored opponents 188-18.

While some exciting games have been played, a number of contests have been blowouts, with several games being decided by 50 points or more. The PIAA mercy-rule clock doesn’t kick-in in until

Most likely, no one outside the Lancer camp thought the hour ride to the Tiger’s den would result in anything less than the same fate every other team has experienced in the Catawissa catacomb since Montoursville’s win on the same field eight years ago. But make no mistake, this victory was no fluke. All three phases of the game — offense, defense, and special teams — were dominated by the motivated Lancers. Southern had not lost a regular season home game since 2010 and has 11 state championship trophies crowded into its expansive trophy case. As one diehard Southern fan remarked after the game, “This was just a beat down. Loyalsock

definitely earned this win.” He uttered the words most Tiger supporters never thought they would hear.

Canton, featuring a senior-laden team ranked as the state’s top Class A team, hosts South Williamsport this Saturday as they seek to defend their District 4 title earned last season. Whatever the outcome, fans will eagerly await a lateseason scheduling treat when Jersey Shore visits Canton on October 21.

As the football season forges ahead, the MLB season is winding down with the eyes of baseball fans are focused on the home run exploits of the Yankees Aaron Judge and the Cardinals Albert Pujols, both chasing milestone records. Judge is trying to catch the Yankee record of 61 long balls in a season set by Roger Maris in 1961, while Pujols is seeking to join Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, and Babe Ruth as the only players in baseball history to top the 700-career home run mark.

Two games later, Pujols hit his 697th home run rallying St. Louis to a comefrom-behind win. In the stands, Matt and Samantha Brown retrieved the ball and wanted to present it to Pujols after the game. Pujols met with the couple and told them to keep the ball.

In such cases, the rationale and sportsmanship of the coaching staffs involved play an important factor. Is taking a knee on all three offensive snaps in the third quarter or throwing a touchdown pass in the waning minutes of the game necessary objectives? When sports are played, the objective is to win the game, but once that outcome is in hand, it might be important to consider how one would feel if your team was on the long end of such lopsided games.

Castro somewhat sheepishly responded, “He congratulated me on hitting the home run and told me the next time I hit one, I should just run around the bases.”

“It’s just a baseball. They deserve to have it. It went out of the ballpark,” Pujols said. “We play the game for the fans. So whether they want to give it back or they want to keep it, I don’t have any problem withPujolsthat.”also gifted the couple two signed baseballs to go along with the game ball. The memento came on a surely emotional day for Samantha Brown, as one year ago to the day, her father passed away.

In what is believed to be his final season of a sure-to-be Hall of Fame 22-year career Pujols is entering his final games

one team has a 35-point lead in the second half. There are pros and cons pertaining to the mercy rule, but the underlying factor is these are teenage youngsters playing a game they enjoy. Getting blasted by such wide margins can be a blow to the ego. Yet, at the same time, shortening games when the outcome is no longer in doubt reduces the opportunities for substitute players to experience some playing time.

with a touch of class and professionalism.

“I think it means more for that girl than me having it in my trophy case,” Pujols stated.Oneneeds to look no further for a true definition of class.

In a recent weekend series in Pittsburgh, Pujols hit a double and was seen engaging in conversation with Pirates rookie second baseman Rodolfo Castro who had hit a home run earlier in the game and enjoyed a triumphant stroll around the bases. Pirates’ broadcasters later asked Castro what was the subject of his conversation with Pujols was about.

He was even better when SJNRA made their run. Davion averaged a staggering 29.2 points and 10.2 rebounds during the STATE playoffs. He was an absolute animal on both ends. It was incredible. Davion went for 31 and claimed 19 rebounds against Linville Hill. He then dropped 39 vs. Nativity in the semis. Davion scored 30 points in the State final. Davion has already tallied 1,876 points in just three years. He has helped SJNRA go 64-14 during that time. Impressive.

of a co-op. I am thrilled that I get to watch him do his thing. Whether it is football or basketball — Davion Hill continues to amaze. I saw some ridiculous numbers the other day. Davion has already gone over 3,000 total yards. That is just insane. Consider that he saw very limited action his sophomore year, and we are only three weeks into his senior campaign. Hill has also scored 40 career touchdowns, and I still say that football is his second-best sport. Well. The jury is still out.

I had the privilege to coach Davion his first three years. And now that I am retired, I can truly appreciate how special he is. Sometimes us coaches are only as good as our horses. Davion Hill is a stallion, and he makes life completely miserable for his opponents. Football and basketball. He shines and stands out. I am excited to see what this year brings — what a stud.

Davion has a will and desire that may even match his talent. That is the scary truth. He continues to grow and is constantly getting better. He is a winner. A leader. A good kid to boot. The sky’s the limit for this young lad. Folks often ask me if he can play at the next level. I tell them ABSOLUTELY. What sport? Davion is just getting started. I am very proud of him and all he has accomplished. I haven’t met or seen anyone who has his entire package. Davion works so hard and will continue to turn heads. Regardless of where he lands — I am thankful I got to play a small part. Cheers.

“DavionIncredible.is exceptional,” Chris Masse explained. “Neumann had a no-fear dog mentality during their postseason run. Davion was the leader, and he is a whole kennel in one. As talented as he is, the insatiable desire to compete and win has always surpassed. Davion has the tools, but so do a lot of elite athletes. What separates him is his heart.”

rumor. We all know that he is a stud on the basketball court, and he was coming off an extraordinary junior hoops season. Davion also had a very busy summer. He is now getting some big-time college interest. He was playing with all the big names in the national AAU circuit. Highlevel tournaments all over the land. Some suggested Davion should focus on just one sport. Ha. Others encouraged him to transfer. Again. Everyone’s an expert and knows what’s best for the young lad.

I still marvel at Davion’s impressive junior season in hoops. I highly doubt it will ever be duplicated. He scored a staggering 783 points last season. And again. Teams were doing their very best to limit his touches. Davion was named the 2022 PIAA Class A Player of the Year. He averaged a districtbest 26.1 points a game. Davion also tallied 7.9 rebs and 3.8 assists. He routinely

off to Coach Justin Van Fleet and the Loyalsock Lancers. They are off to a great start on the gridiron. The boys knocked off mighty Southern Columbia 27-10 last week. That’s a big-time win as those Tigers don’t often lose, especially at home. It was a total team effort, but one guy led the way. Senior running back Davion Hill had a stellar game. He rushed for 176 yards against a stellar defense. The kid is impressive in whatever he does. I am a fan.
