Happy New Year!

T

here is no doubt that 2020 has been quite the year. Probably the most memorable of most of our lifetimes. To make things even more interesting, this is actually our 53rd issue of the year, which I had to double-check the calendar to see if that was even possible! Also, due to how the calendar falls, this is actually our 2nd charity pages/New Year’s edition of the year!

Crazy right?

So let’s end 2020 on a good note. One that celebrates local organizations that are working hard to support our community in a variety of ways!

This week’s issue is just one of the many ways Jimmy helps people and our community in the course of a year. I don’t think he gets enough ‘thank yous’ for it.

So, before we get to what’s happening in this issue, I want to say thank you to Jimmy. You do a lot for our community that goes unseen and even though you don’t want to be — you should be recognized for that. Thank you.

So, on to the details about this week’s issue: For the past five years, Jimmy has given each full-time employee a page of the paper to donate to the charity of their choice. We all get to pick something that is near and dear to us and donate ad space, editorial space, or a combination of both.

As you can see on the cover, we have

a wide variety of organizations from across the area that we donated space to this week. I’m sure that you are familiar with most, and you can learn about what they do in more detail as you read through this issue, but here is a quick rundown: Beckoning Cat Project: They believe that the problem of “too many cats and not enough homes” can be addressed through educational outreach, coordination of services, and a comprehensive neuter-spay program that reaches all cats in our neighborhoods.

Clinton County SPCA: The Clinton County SPCA is a small, no-kill animal shelter located in Lock Haven. They work every day to protect the legion of animals suffering from cruelty, abuse, neglect, and abandonment each year. They cannot accomplish their life-saving work without your support.

Consolidated Sportsman of Muncy Creeks: The Sportsmen manage two trout nurseries in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission at the Faus Nursery in Hughesville and the Bob King Nursery at Roaring Run. Family Promise of Lycoming County: Family Promise of Lycoming County empowers families to become and remain self-sufficient by breaking the cycle of homelessness, provides community awareness and advocacy, and creates mis-

sion opportunities for individuals and faith based communities.

Gold Star Families: America’s Gold Star Families honors our fallen heroes who served in the United States Armed Forces and cares for their survivors through programs and services at no Steph cost to the survivors.

Nordstrom Hunters Sharing the Harvest: Hunters Sharing the Harvest is Pennsylvania’s venison donation program for hunters who share their extra venison via a statewide network of participating butchers to food pantries and community assistance centers across Pennsylvania. HSH has distributed 1.5 million pounds of donated venison since 1991.

March of Dimes: March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. They carry out this mission through research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies’ lives.

Multiple Sclerosis Society: Helping people affected by MS to live their best lives as they stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost, and end MS forever.

Each of these charities means something to the employee that sponsored them.

They are all amazing local organizations that are doing what they can to help in our area.

Listen, as of this writing, I’m still working on finishing Christmas stuff, so I’ll probably get to resolutions sometime around March!

I have some thoughts of getting back to my yoga mat and consuming a few less carbs, but we’ll see how that goes too! I do have some thoughts about a new tattoo that would certainly be a bit cuter if my arms were in a little better shape, so maybe that’s the motivation I will need…

Obviously, we won’t be headed out to ring in the New Year, but please be safe.

Holidays like New Year’s have a way of bringing out the worst in people, so in addition to taking care of yourself, keep an eye on those around you. Not only for your safety but also for theirs. It’s easy to think that it isn’t your responsibility to ‘babysit’ others, but wouldn’t it be worth it if it saves their life or someone else’s?

Please — please — make sure you don’t drink and drive. Download the Uber or Lyft apps before you head out so you can get a safe ride home.

Community Solutions For Cats

Beckoning Cat Project would like to thank the employees, patrons, customers, volunteers, communities, businesses, and organizations who have supported and participated in the services of the clinic and the cat café. Similar to other small businesses and non-profits which have struggled and improvised to survive this year, BCP has also faced multiple challenges in 2020.

THE CAT TALES CAFÉ Beckoning Cat Project’s Cat Tales Café opened in June 2019. The purpose of the café is to provide a comfortable environment for people who may not be able to have their own cat but would like spend a little time visiting with cats. Admission to the café is $5.00 per hour per person. This fee helps support the costs of housing and care for the cats. There is free admission on Tuesdays for seniors, veterans, and active military with ID. The café partners with and showcases cats from the Lycoming County SPCA. All cats at the café are adoptable. Many of these cats may have been overlooked at the shelter because of their age, conditions, or cage shyness. The café gives these cats a better chance of showing their true personalities, and gives people who would like to adopt a cat the chance to get to know the cats in a natural indoor environment. The café also provides an opportunity for cat lovers to volunteer. Applications are accepted year-round. Interested individuals can email clinic@beckoningcatproject.org or message on FB to the group Cat Tales Café.

In 2020, the café experienced numerous limitations due to COVID. However, the café has remained open with safeguards in place and has placed 134 cats in new homes since June 2019. The café looks forward to returning to expanded hours and events, such as birthday parties, cat yoga, bingo and painting parties, in 2021. You can follow Cat Tales Cat Café placements on Facebook group Cat Tales Cat Café. Donations to Beckoning Cat Project can be designated for the café by including a verbal or written note from the donor.

THE CLINIC Beckoning Cat Project Clinic provides high quality, low cost neuter/spay services for cats in the greater Williamsport area and beyond. The clinic has been in operation for 7 years, and has neutered/spayed approximately 28,000 cats. The need for neuter/spay services has grown exponentially as more people become aware of the plight of cats without homes or medical care. In some areas that have used the Trap, Neuter, Return approach, cat populations have stabilized and are no longer growing.

Throughout 2020, partial shutdowns due to the COVID crisis created a backlog in appointments for veterinary services, since fewer hours and surgeries could be performed. In August, BCP moved the clinic and café to a new and larger location at 320 East Third Street. The decision for this move had been made prior to the COVID crisis in order to meet the growing demand for services. Shortly before this move, the clinic’s second veterinarian moved away from the area. These events have temporarily reduced the services and funding for BCP’s popular programs like Compassionate Communities (free TNR for residents of participating communities), and the free neuter/spay Veterans’ Day Program. The clinic continues to search for a qualified second veterinarian and plans to resume all free and reduced cost programs in the new year when hours and services can again be expanded.

Monetary donations, or gifts of cat food, litter, and pee pads, are tax deductible and always greatly appreciated by the organization.

Despite this number of daunting challenges in 2020, Beckoning Cat Project continues to provide and coordinate a number of services to the cat community. The clinic is still on target to neuter/spay 4,500 cats for the 2020 calendar year. Cooperation and coordination with other organizations and individuals continues to build a wider network of services to alleviate the suffering of cats without homes or healthcare in our area. Beckoning Cat Project currently partners with Cherished Cats, Cats in Bloom, Sun Pets, and numerous other small rescues and shelters.

think we can all agree that 2020 has been a crazy year and that some norms can be thrown out the window.

Typical New Year’s Resolutions simply do not apply. Sure, we all want to lose weight, especially since being home-bound and baking everything we could have possibly imagined. Most of us also still want to get in shape, declutter, organize our homes, and learn a new skill. But this year, it might be prudent to step back and take a long, hard look at what is really important. Things that add value and quality to our lives.

Exercise: If you are going to exercise, make it something you enjoy. Most of us are working out at home these days.

Make it fun. Listen to your favorite music.

Schedule a video workout with a friend over Zoom. Not sure what you are doing?

Ask a professional. Most trainers are out of work these days. Not only would you be getting tips from an expert or great ideas, but you would be helping to feed families and keep the economy going.

Learn a new skill: Learning a new skill, maybe even a new job skill, might be something worth looking into. Whatever it is, aim for something you will enjoy. If you currently, or did, work in an office

Though the pandemic hit the job market hard, new opportunities in IT, computers, and remote work popped up that may be of interest.

Cook: Though you may love to go to restaurants, it is going to be a while before we can comfortably go out to our favorite eateries without wearing a HAZMAT suit. Instead, learn to cook. In fact, learn how to cook great food. These days we can have virtually any ingredient delivered to our door, and with the internet, at our fingertips, there is almost no food that is “off the table” (pun intended).

Declutter: Clean your house. Clean your workstation. Clean your inbox.

Clean something. Not only will you have less physical clutter, but you will have psychological clutter. I know, not necessarily one of the more fun resolutions, but if you are like me, you

have been living like a hoarder. It seems like stuff is piling up everywhere, and since the cold weather has finally arrived, getting outside has been even more difficult, so it is important to keep your space comfortable.

Relationships: Last, and most important, work on your relationships. Spend time around people that make you want to be a better person. People that support you lift you up and motivate you. Life is way too short to spend your precious time around negative people. Call a friend, send a hand-written note, let the people you love know you care about them.

I say this often, but it is worth noting again, life is short. Let’s all pray that 2021 is not only a better year but a great year.

Over 1 Pound of Mats Removed Matty was found as a stray with over a pound of mats and very ingrown toenails. Unfortunately, we never found his owners, but fortunately, he is happier and healthier than ever before. After a nice grooming, a dental, and some TLC, Matty is now a super awesome pup who is currently looking for his forever home. He loves people and doesn’t seem to mind other dogs or cats. Recovering from Gunshot Wound A cat who we later named Remington, a young, female calico, was targeted last month in the woods near Lock Haven. She was brought to us as a stray, looking very sick and lethargic. But fortunately for Remington, a good Samaritan found her and brought her to the Clinton County SPCA just in time to get her the veterinary treatment she really needed. At first, the veterinarian could not find anything wrong with Remington, but after operating they found shotgun pellet fragments embedded into her leg. We are so grateful to say that she is now completely recovered and doing great. Although we have not found who did this to her.

Dear Community Member, The Consolidated Sportsmen of Muncy Creeks are a member of the Cooperative Nursery Unit of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The club is undertaking their biggest project in 25 years.

After using the Faus Nursery, located outside of Hughesville, for over fifty years, it needed replaced. The club raises 4,500 trout at this nursery that are stocked in our local streams to support our area anglers, old and young alike. Of these trout, 1,000 are used for our Dick Harner’s Kids Trout Derby, which annually brings 200 children, ages 12 and under, to Van Renssalear Park in Picture Rocks on the first Sunday in May, for a wonderful, free fishing experience. The needed upgrade of this longstanding facility will allow the Sportsmen to continue to support the fishing activities of our community and introduce children to an active, outdoor lifestyle.

To help offset the cost of this project, the Sportsmen kindly ask that you consider supporting our efforts to promote the future of fishing in our community. If you are able to support our cause, you will be recognized with a plaque at the nursery. any sign of life out there.

But friends, even in the depths of winter, life goes on. As I look more closely, I can see the red hue on the tree tips caused by thousands of emerging buds. You see, trees never stop growing, even in winter. Long before any of us are thinking about spring, their roots are already delivering sap to the branches as they prepare for another season of growth. The trees of Penn’s woods may look lifeless, but rest assured, they are not. There is a season for everything.

And that includes the year 2020. It has been dark and dreary and lifeless, but deep within our hibernating souls, the sap of new life is already flowing.

We can’t see it yet, but rest assured, it is there, and it is flowing strong.

Heather and I have served our Lord in full-time ministry for a long time, but our church has never suffered losses like it has this year. At times, we felt like we were watching our life’s work disintegrate before our eyes. We know that many of you have suffered similar losses. It’s been devastating.

But over the years we’ve learned something about hard times: they always come before good times, just as winter always comes before spring.

May they fill you with the hope of resurrection and peace: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed — Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”

My dear friends, don’t lose heart and don’t give up — the best is yet to come.

County Hall Corner Better Luck Next Year

I

f ever we would want a year to end, 2020 is the year. Even Stephen King would not have been able to imagine such a hodgepodge of disasters coming one after the other; a presidential impeachment (remember that?), a pandemic, city riots, an undercount census, major event cancellations, massive economic, social and educational

shutdowns, travel restrictions, a hugely controversial presidential election, and to cap it all off, a record-setting snowstorm.

But, as previous columns have noted, Lycoming County has weathered this turbulence better than many other areas of the country. Based on that, what would be the best-case scenario for the upcoming year? I would like to suggest five hopeful possibilities.

First, whatever else we know about

COVID, we know that it is a virus, and by all appearances, it is following the normal path of infection. This would indicate that we should expect to see an eventual decline in cases through the coming year. Our recent spike may be a blessing in disguise as it could well provide our area with needed herd immunity. It would normally follow that there would be a steady decrease through 2021.

Second, we should expect to see a strong comeback in the local economy.

Like everywhere else, the hardships have been horrific, especially to small

businesses. Many have been holding on by a thread, but as restrictions are lifted, there hopefully will be a lot of frustrated customers anxious to get back to buying

local again. The decision of Digger Specialties Inc. of Indiana to build a new manufacturing plant in the southern part of the county is also a shot of confidence in the future of the local economy.

Third, our annual events will return, and probably with greater enthusiasm due to their recent absence. From the West Branch Susquehanna Builder’s Show to the Lycoming County Fair to the biggest event of all — the Little League World Series — many local traditional festivities will be eagerly welcomed back (and highlighted by Webb Weekly), providing an important shot of economic activity as well.

Fourth, expect our local officials to be wiser and more effective. Back in January, newbies in office were County Commissioner Scott Metzger, District Attorney Ryan Gardner, Director of the Department of Public Safety Jeff Hutchinson, local Williamsport Mayor Derek Slaughter, to name a few. These officials and others have weathered arguably the roughest freshman terms imaginable, and for the most part, weathered them rather well. This experience will be worth its weight in gold

as local and county officials work hard to repair the havoc of 2020.

And finally, for many, the uncertainty and chaos of 2020 have driven them to seek hope in God rather than hope in man. I have heard more people talking about prayer this year than I ever had.

Ironically, it has harder now to worship corporately than at any other time in American history. Religious freedom has been called into question when it was never more needed, and thus, more highly valued. The book of Hebrews in the Bible comforts us with these words of instruction, “Let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.”

(Hebrews 10:24-25) If we build on the painful lessons of this past year and admit we have taken for granted much of the goodness God has shown to us, we can reflect that 2020 was not all bad. In fact, we may look back many years from now and be thankful that it kicked us in the rear and refocused us to appreciate the blessings we have enjoyed and taken for granted.

Major League Baseball Tries to Right A Historical Wrong By Recognizing the Negro Leagues As Major Leagues

M

ajor League Baseball took a welcome and long overdue action two weeks after recognizing the Negro Leagues (1920-1948) and confer on them Major League status. This was a step to right a historical wrong that denied some of the best baseball players in history the opportunity to showcase

their awesome talents only because they had the “wrong” skin color.

Some background about this momentous step to right a historical wrong. The seven Negro Leagues, which included the Negro National League, the Negro American League, the Eastern Colored League, the Negro Southern League, the American Negro League, and the EastWest League, were excluded in 1969 when the Special Committee on Baseball

Records identified six official “major leagues” dating to 1876. These white defunct leagues included the National Association, Union Association, the Players League, the Federal League, the American Association. “It is MLB’s view that the Committee’s 1969 omission of the Negro Leagues from consideration was clearly an error that demands today’s designation,” Major League Baseball said in announcing this change.

According to MLB, the decision took into account discussions with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, a 2006 study by the Negro League Researchers and Authors Group, and an expanding historical record of Negro League statistics, among other factors.

In its announcement, MLB specifically commended historian Larry Lester, a cofounder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, as well as Gary Ashwill, Scott Simkus, Mike Lynch, and Kevin Johnson for their construction of Seamheads’ Negro Leagues Database, which has pieced together newspapers, scorebooks, photo albums, and microfiche to provide the most complete statistical record of the Negro Leagues to date.

As a member of the Society for American Baseball Research’s (SABR) Negro Leagues Research Committee for the past 27 years, I am deeply grateful

and heartened by this momentous step to truly honor and recognize the accomplishments of these men who played their excellent and exciting brand of baseball in the shadows. This action can’t reverse or be a reparation for the wrong done to these outstanding athletes, but perhaps it can help bring belated recognition and respect to them.

The knock on bringing this respect to the Negro Leagues, and perhaps why more Negro Leaguers have not been enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, has been the so-called spottiness of Negro League records. There is a certain amount of truth to that, but that has been brilliantly reversed by the hard work of researchers and historians across the country, particularly people such as my friend Larry Lester, Gary Ashwill, Scott Simkus, Ted Knorr, and many others. They have been meticulously and thoroughly combing microfilms of newspapers across the country, including some of the great black newspapers such as the “Chicago Defender, the “Pittsburgh Courier,” the “Baltimore Afro-American” and many more.

The database of verifiable statistics is growing daily. It should help bolster the cases for the inclusion of at least a dozen or more players who have thus far have been overlooked for enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I

t’s the end of another year. Hard to believe. As hard as this year was, I feel like it still went pretty quickly.

I looked back on what I wrote last year, and it made me laugh. Here a small part of it. “Here we are, ringing in 2020 already. Where on earth does the time go? I don’t know why, but I have this feeling it’s going to be a big year. 2020, I mean, just the sound of it makes me feel like it means business. The best part is, I am going to be an Aunt again here

in June!”

These statements were on point, but nothing I could have ever even dreamed of.

First off, and most importantly, I got my beautiful niece named Leah Perry, born on May 27th. 6 lb. 12 oz. and the most beautiful thing you ever did see. Just the sweetest little angel and Auntie’s little girl! Always just full of smiles. She sure put light into our lives during a dark time.

The part about “I have a feeling it’s going to be a big year!?” Geeze. Ya think!?

I am keeping my mouth shut about 2021. I am just going to say it is going to be so boring.

Nothing exciting will Andrea happen. (There, that McElroy should keep us safe.)

NOT. All I know is 2021 is just around the corner, God’s in control, and we got this, guys! I heard if you open up all your

doors and windows at midnight at the start of the new year, all the old stink of 2020 will leave, and the freshness of 2021 will enter. If each of us opens at least one window, I mean, that’s gotta help. Anything to help us bring in a new fresh year that will give us hope of things getting back to normal.

So, for the new year, whether you open up one window or twenty, go to bed at 8 p.m. (who’s judging?), ring in the new year with a few friends, or sit quietly sipping on your favorite beverage watching the ball drop, I pray this new

Pretzels with Cheese Sauce Perfect snack to ring in the New Year!

Ingredients: • Can of refrigerated biscuit dough • 4 cups water • 1/4 cup baking soda • 1 large egg, beaten • Coarse salt • 2 Tbsp. butter • 2 Tbsp. flour • 1 cup milk • 2 1/2 cups extra sharp cheddar cheese • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • Pinch cayenne pepper Directions: Preheat the oven to 425°. Spray a large cookie sheet with cooking spray.

To make the pretzels: Quarter each biscuit, then roll each piece into a ball.

Using a knife, carve an X into each ball.

In a medium saucepan, combine water and baking soda. Bring to boil then reduce to a simmer. Add balls and cook for 30 seconds. (The dough will float to

top.) Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a baking sheet, making sure the pretzels aren’t touching. (They will look like a hot mess but look glorious when they come out of the oven. Trust me.) Brush beaten egg over each pretzel, then sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Meanwhile, make cheese sauce: Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Stir in milk and bring to a simmer. When milk begins to thicken, stir in cheese, whisking constantly until sauce is smooth. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and cayenne. Serve with the pretzels.

Finding them was half the problem; war was the other half. This is the consummate buddy book, and it can’t be missed.

Anyone who’s a sucker for a good Mother-and-Child book will love “Like Crazy: Life with My Mother and Her Invisible Friends” by Dan Mathews, who renovated a Victorian house and moved his mentally-ill, elderly mother in with him. She’s charming and funny, but she’s also a handful. Read it. Bring

CHILDREN’S BOOKS Readers shouldn’t be surprised that two of this years’ Best of books are from author Nic Stone. First, “Clean Getaway” is the story of a young boy whose grandmother takes him on a cross-country tour of places that held meaning for her – but there’s more than just a “tour” involved in this great middle-grade novel. Then, older teens will love Stone’s “Dear Justyce,” a story told in letters from a young man in prison to his friend, who chose another life path.

Mindful eating focuses on slowing down, being present, connecting with the food in front of you to truly enjoy it and be in sync with your

body’s cues of hunger and fullness.

When you fill your plate, take the time to notice the colors, taste, textures. Savor and enjoy each bite.

It takes around 20 minutes for your brain to register a feeling of fullness, so slowing down not only allows you to fully enjoy the food – it also allows your body the chance to feel full which can help prevent overeating.

Don’t Skip Meals Oftentimes, people may skip meals throughout the day in attempt to “save” for their holiday meal. I

encourage you to continue eating regularly throughout the day on holidays. This will help fuel and energize your body, and you will have food already in your body, so you’ll be much less likely to be ravenous when it is time for that holiday meal.

Also, be mindful of restrictive dieting as it can often increase your cravings and set you up for failure. Rather than trying to avoid all the foods you enjoy, indulge in moderation through a smaller serving to quench your craving. You can have your cake and eat it too.

ith just a few days remaining until we can put a lid on the Year 2020, we have so much to put behind us — and so much to look forward to!

No matter which way you lean in politics, and without trying to open up a political debate, I believe everyone is very happy to finally have the recent Presidential election over and done. The thing that dominated our thoughts day in and day out throughout most of 2020 was, no doubt, the Coronavirus pandemic and the devastating results on our economy.

It resonated locally, throughout the state, the entire United States, and across the globe. Finally, as if to give us one more kick in the teeth, Mother Nature managed to dump a couple of feet of snow across our area on Wednesday, December 16 — the greatest amount of snow we have seen in years, which kept many area residents housebound for days!

Let us now turn the page as we look forward to a New Year — 2021.

It is exciting to realize that we now have two vaccines to aid in fighting the coronavirus and that there may be even more vaccines available in the near future. It would appear that with the rapid

the corner on this virus and, hopefully, we will be able to put a lid on it soon. We can then devote our much-needed attention to getting the economy and our lives back to normal once again! We have much to look forward to.

Folks who live in the Northcentral Pennsylvania area either reside in or have easy access to the outdoors, which is a real blessing for each of us. I recently discussed the coronavirus with a gentleman who holds multiple Doctorates in Biology, Chemistry, and Medicine and has worked in Virology for years.

His comment to me was that living in a rural environment, which we do here in Lycoming and surrounding counties places us in an enviable position. Much of our own immune system is used to fight off so many airborne things, but in the outdoors in our region, many of these negative ingredients do not exist, thus allowing our immune system to help fight off things like viruses.

Now, as we enter the New Year and a new era of hope, we can start to focus in earnest on more positive things. The trips we planned, the gatherings we had wanted to have happened, and the many items that we shelved in 2020 have a real chance of happening this coming year. We can begin to plan for these things, and the

Changing Gears

N

ow that the regular firearms deer seasons are over, it’s time to start looking at some other outdoor ventures — more specifically, I’m talking about ice fishing. Sure, there are still some hunting opportunities that remain, like the late archery season, flintlock hunting for deer, and of course, some small game hunting, but if weather permits, the “frozen chosen” will be making their debut soon.

I started ice fishing when I was in high school back in the ‘60s, and in those days, ice fishermen were few and far between, but over the years, that scene has changed considerably.

More and more people are getting involved in ice fishing these days for a number of reasons. No doubt, one reason for the increase in interest is the much-improved equipment and clothing that adds a great deal

to the comfort level when sitting out on a frozen lake.

Today’s winter clothing is much lighter and much more efficient at retaining body heat and at keeping the wind out. Trust me; lakes do not freeze everywhere on the lake at the same rate; wind, springs, and other factors may influence how much ice there is and where it forms. Make sure there is sufficient, safe ice, and above all, put safety first.

In the 30-team NBA, only one politically incorrect name can be found, the Golden State Warriors, while there are four teams named after animals and four after birds.

Local significance team names included the 76ers, Magic, Pistons, Rockets, Pacers, and Suns.

Major League Baseball’s 30 teams include the aforementioned Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians. Perhaps that insensitive list should be expanded to include those swashbuckling dudes of yesteryear, the Pittsburgh Pirates. On the calmer side, there are three teams of animals and three of birds. Local pride shines through with the Twins, Astros, Rangers, Mariners, Nationals, Brewers, Rockies, D-Backs, and Padres.

Houston wins the local pride naming award with the Astros, Rockets, and Texans representing the city well.

After further review, there are two teams that need their name changed immediately, the New York Yankees and our very own Williamsport Crosscutters. The term “Yankee” originated in 1683 as a name applied disparagingly by Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam (New York) to English colonists in neighboring Connecticut.

As for the Crosscutters, how could the environmentalists accept such a destructive name? Maybe we should ask Rusty Roughcut.

It’s all in fun. We sure need a little of that to escape 2020!

While there are certainly those who view sports teams containing American Indian nicknames as disrespectful, including many Native American Indians themselves, it can be reasoned that those nicknames were established out of respect and honor rather than a discredit to their namesakes. But that ship has left port, and new team names are being established, which the teams have every right to do.

However, left behind, there are countless professional, college, high school, and sandlot teams still identified by similar nicknames. Perhaps the two most prominent are the Florida State Seminoles and the Atlanta Braves, both of which have shown no intention of changing their names. Closer to home, there is no indication that the Montoursville Warriors, Muncy Indians, or Sayre Redskins are making a change.

William Shakespeare long ago asked, “What’s in a Name?” Let’s take a look at what our professional sports teams are calling themselves.

Usually, I leave on a positive. But 2020 was a hard one. The story of the year was COVID. It has affected us all in many ways. I would say that it changed me personally. I no longer trust the media. I only read WEBB WEEKLY. I did enjoy my time with my family. But being back to the grind and trying to stay safe has been difficult. I am trying my best to stay positive. 2021 can only get better.

I am truly blessed and humbled.

The praise and feedback are off the charts. It is embarrassing. I DO take pride in this part-time gig. The WEBB WEEKLY and I have been together since her beginning, and I look forward to sharing more tales in 2021. Special thanks to Mr. Webb for the opportunity. He has been a good friend and serves as the big brother I never had. I don’t agree with him politically, but we have a common understanding. He even allows me to broadcast some football games.

My editor Steph has also been grand.

I have only seen her four times in the past 16 years, yet we speak every week. She is one of my good friends.

Steph makes this page look nice and adds a few commas. Thanks, guys.

My topics vary. They revolve around sports and the great outdoors. Fly fishing is my new passion, but I enjoy the many conversations with the local HS coaches and athletes. Jimmy and Steph allow me to seek and share some of their accomplishments. It is a lot of fun, and I have made many connections. Sharing these stories can be somewhat of a challenge. I play fair, strive to win, and always do my best. Thankfully this is not a pilot. I do like to stir the pot from time to time.

My 11-year-old son is my pride and joy. Jensen is a great kid, and I refer to him quite often. He plays a lot of FORTNITE and tags along with some of my adventures. Jensen participates in many sports, which provides some great content. My lovely bride is also great, and we make a solid team. But Michelle doesn’t like the spotlight,

so I always refrain from using her name.

The Spencers like to keep it simple. We take advantage of our beautiful area. Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and camping provide some great articles. I Jamie Spencer got a lot of love from those.

I am back on the sidelines. Coaching some hoops at St. John Regional Academy and looking forward to getting into the gym after our pause.

COVID has impacted just about everything. I remain optimistic.

Hopefully, we will have some type of season. The boys definitely deserve it. My fingers are crossed. Plan on hearing more from the bleachers as we get closer.

Several have asked some interesting questions. Perhaps I can take this opportunity to entertain a few. No. I did not study creative writing or journalism in college. I crunched numbers and played tons of golf.

English was actually my worst subject. It was a constant fight, and I vividly remember the battles. I lacked

confidence. I guess that is why I am so appreciative when someone reaches out to give me props. I usually return serve with a COVID hug.

I always struggle with early deadlines. My spunky editor would agree. Some say it is procrastination.

I prefer to call it a minor delay in motivation. I always have good intentions. But certain things tend to get in the way. It isn’t always my fault, kids. But it usually is.

No. I do not write these articles behind a computer or fancy laptop. I am always on the go, and I call myself a MOBILE freelance scriber. All of my columns are typed on an iPhone.

Maybe that is why my thumb never works, and my spelling stinks. My favorite place to scribe is on a park bench along a creek somewhere. I usually head there about an hour before my deadline. You wouldn’t believe it. Today I am doing this little write-up while making a drive to Mifflinburg. I will take a break to install these two vanities. My coworkers accuse me of blogging. No, this isn’t a rant on FACEBOOK. This goes out to 58,000 homes. Cheers.
