here’s no better time of year to get out and about and enjoy all the outdoors have to offer in our little neck of Penn’s Woods. And yes, my title is from Luke Bryan’s hit song. The lyric pretty much sums up how so many of us feel and only wish we had more time to enjoy all God’s green Earth has to offer. A few serious notes before I move on to one of my favorite contests. First up, a simple one that gets complicated every hunting season. Please respect the property boundaries of your fellow man. If you don’t have permission to hunt somewhere, you shouldn’t be there. And I’m talking about seasonal permission, not that commonly used line; you talked to somebody 20 years ago, and they said I could hunt here. This can be followed by, even if you know you can hunt a property, a please and thank you followed up by, has anything changed this season, is the best way to go. If you hunt within a club, state land, with a group, or do have permission to hunt private land, respect the boundar-

ies of the other hunters and landowner. I’m sure almost every hunter reading this has had somebody walk through an area or set up in a spot they were hunting. There is nothing more frustrating. Common sense, communication, and following the golden rule and applying it to hunting is the best way to avoid a problem. The most important thing in regard to any kind of hunting is safety. This begins with securing and understanding the area you are hunting. Then, use common sense if any variables present themselves or if your instincts tell you something may not be right. Now to our 19th Annual Webb Weekly Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest. Which begins right along with the archery season this Saturday. Our contest is named in remembrance of my Uncle Ron Maietta, who was an avid outdoorsman and battled MS for a good portion of his life. And for long time, Webb Weekly family member Ron Mingle, who retired from his normal duties but still oversees the Monster Buck

Contest, his wife Steph battles MS each and every day. My staff and I donate every year on behalf of all the hunters who enter to help find a cure for the disease. I will give you my monJim Webb Jr. ster buck CliffsNotes version of the contest. Full details can be found on page 31. I have always believed a trophy buck is in the hands of the holder. So, any legal buck taken in our neck of Penn’s Woods can be entered. By entering, you are automatically registered into our random rifle contest; thank you to Sauers Trading and the father/son duo of Jon and Don for handling all the legalities. They do a great job each and every year. Also, just by entering, you increase that donation made to battle MS. There are 4 top winners, which will include our monster buck of the year. Runner up through fourth prize receives a $100 venison processing card from Stoltzfus Butcher in Mill Hall. They are a full-service venison processor and make some of the best products you’ll ever try. First prize is a free shoulder mount, a $775 value, done by my favorite taxider-

my man or woman. You may register your trophy at Poust Taxidermy outside of Jersey Shore. Dana and Sam will do the initial scoring, a very simple process. You may also register at Sauers Trading in Southside. Again, it’s quick and easy. We use SCI standards, and the top bucks will advance for final official scoring. Congratulations again to last year’s winner, Nate Kremser, pictured above. His 12-point monster buck had an SCI scoring of 185.3 and edged out several other trophy whitetails. I wish everybody good luck and great hunting. Remember, safety first, and respect your fellow hunters. God Bless America.

e other people’s biggest fan. Support them. Encourage them. Root for them to succeed. You should never root for someone to fail, even if that person happens to be someone you’re competing against. The easiest example I can think of is sports. People will say, “I hate the Red Sox.” Or they’ll take it even further and say they hate a specific player on the Red Sox. First, we shouldn’t hate anyone. And second, how can you actually hate someone simply because of the team they play for? I’m all for being passionate about your team. Root like heck for them to win. Celebrate when they do. Be disappointed when they don’t. But I think there is a difference between rooting for your team to succeed and rooting for someone else to fail. And I think that goes way beyond sports. You can want the promotion without hoping your coworker doesn’t get it. You can want to win without hoping your opponent fails. You can chase your own goals without being jealous when someone else reaches theirs. I also think you’ll find life is a lot more enjoyable when you spend your energy rooting for people instead of rooting against them. Along those same lines, I think we need to remember how much hard work goes into success. Whether we’re talking about winning a game, getting a promotion, landing a new job, or reaching a personal goal, there is

SCI-FI all-time favorites, and the author of over a hundred books. This literary colossus produced, in a mere four years, the first book on an invisible man; the first about a time machine; and the first involving full-scale alien invasion. Were it not for the slightly earlier Jules Verne — whom, as far as I can tell, Lehr never “covered” — we might be tempted to dub Wells the grandfather of science-fiction; yet he also wrote works of history, satire, biography and political & social commentary — along with dandy comic novels of British middle-class life: Tono-Bungay, Kipps, The History of Mr. Polly and many others. Yet once we acknowledge the foundations laid by Verne and Wells, it seems indisputable that Clarke, Heinlein, Asimov and Bradbury constitute a tetrarchy of masters to whom every subsequent SF writer owes, shall we say, a galactic debt. Clarke and Heinlein were experts in hard science, while Asimov roared through numerous genres, producing upwards of 500 books; his famous “three laws of robotics” seem to become more prescient every day. Bradbury, on the other hand, was more of a mystic, lacing the psyches of adolescent Boomers with hopes, dreams and nightmares that remain ingrained in us to this day.

Yet like Wells, all four of these visionaries were primarily storytellers — always front-lining the human element above gadgetry, jargon and technological flights of fancy. This was also true of my favorite among the second-generation SF writers who followed: Philip K. Dick, whose landmark Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (1968) also keeps getting more and more relevant — as AI becomes increasingly hard to distinguish from humans. Dick’s Electric Sheep was the basis for Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking 1982 movie Blade Runner, which in turn generated a dazzling 2017 sequel — along with Amazon’s hot-looking Blade Runner 2099 series, premiering this November. Located in the third-floor gallery, the Lehr exhibit is free and open to the public. Hours are available at pct.edu/gallery/about#hours. Lehr’s daughter Diana, who made the exhibit possible, will speak at the college’s Davie Jane Gilmour Center, Room 1056, at 6 p.m. on Oct.1 — following a 5 p.m. reception at the Gallery in Madigan. My own talk one week later — 6 p.m., third floor Madigan on Oct. 8 — is likewise free and open to the public; but please register for that one at jvbrown. libcal.com.

which sells recreations of vintage style and touts the quality is “suitable for movie, TV, or theatrical productions, living history and performing arts requirements.” Which I take to mean they look vintage but hold up to some wear and tear, unlike true vintage pieces. For blouses, they have a Florence Lace Blouse in white featuring a floral crochet along the pleated front and sleeves with a band collar topped by a ruffle. This definitely can, and should, be styled with modern pieces to avoid costume territory. So, bust out a statement pant and a pop-of-color shoe for a vintage-inspired-but-modern outfit. I also like their Pinstripe Blouse in black and white. This is a more severe style, no lace or ruffles; however, the high collar and puffed sleeves speak to the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras. This buttoned blouse could be swapped with any standard button-down outfit for an old-timey take on a current-day look. No matter your Victorian blouse source, one of the reasons folks are drawn to the flirty tops right now is because they are the perfect yin to the yang of casually cool bottoms. Whether it’s a pair of loose-fitting barrel-leg jeans, drawstring trousers, or corduroys, a romantically vintage top balances out those boyishly cool pieces. So, if you’re thinking about having a whimsically chic fall, look for tops with subtly sheer fabrics like lace, frills, ruffles, embroidery, and voluminous sleeves.

First Crush Lace tunic in ivory. Granted, the drop-waist silhouette plays more to 1920s versus 1890s style; however, the ruffled long sleeves, lace choker-style neckline, and scalloped hem keyhole feature walk the line between flapper and “angel in the house”. You could wear this tunic as a top; however, I’m seeing this as a mid-layer worn under a strapless dress so that the lacy sleeves and neckline become the start of the show versus the peekaboo lace of the bodice. There’s also the brand’s Salone eyelet top again in ivory that looks straight out of the Anne of Green Gables miniseries from 1985, in a good way. The eyelet embroidery, scallop trim, and smocked back make for a relaxed yet fitted silhouette with a knowingly vintage charm. This top pairs with a cropped black trouser for a charming workwear look, or wear with a casual drawstring pant for weekend brunch. Most of the options out there are white or ivory; however, a patterned blouse like Torrid’s Festi Ruffle Neck Tiered Top with its burgundy and black paisley print also speaks to the Victorian trends. It features long bell sleeves and a double ruffle hem with shirring that fits the bill for frills, while the paisley makes me think of 19th century upholstery, again in a good way. You can maintain the Victorian feel when wearing a midi-length black skirt and black boots. Or go a different vintage route with bell-bottom jeans and cork-soled wedges. Lastly, there’s the Historical Emporium,

50 YEARS ed that work by opening the Journey House Transitional Housing Program. For nearly 20 years, Journey House has helped Lycoming County families experiencing homelessness move toward stability and self-sufficiency. The program reflects the congregation’s belief that faith is expressed through practical help, sustained relationships, and respect for the dignity of every person. New Covenant has also taken public steps to define its welcome and values. In 2015, members voted to become an Open and Affirming congregation. In doing so, the church declared, “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” The congregation further affirmed that all people are welcomed for who they are and who God made them to be. Two years later, in 2017, the congregation voted to become a Creation Justice church, promising to do all it can to be a good steward of God’s creation. Together, these commitments to inclusion, environmental responsibility, service, and spiritual life illustrate how New Covenant has continued to interpret its founding mission in response to changing community needs. The 50th anniversary offers members and friends an opportunity to remem-

ber the people who built the congregation, celebrate the ministries that have grown from their vision, and look ahead to the work still to come. The story of New Covenant is rooted in a literal walk from one church building to another, but its deeper meaning lies in the decision to move forward together. That spirit of shared purpose has sustained the congregation through five decades of worship, outreach, and change. In addition to the October 4th anniversary service, New Covenant has scheduled events and mission projects throughout the anniversary year. Through these activities, the congregation hopes to recognize its past while inviting the wider community to participate in its continuing ministries. Community members, former members, and friends of the church are invited to attend the 50th anniversary worship service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, October 4th, 2026, at New Covenant United Church of Christ, 202 E. Third St., Williamsport. For more information about the anniversary, programs or ministries, contact the church office or the Rev. Brad Walmer, or visit the congregation’s website, Facebook page, or YouTube channel.

• 1 cup of Extra Sharp cheese, shredded • 1/2 cup mayo • 1 stick of softened butter • You can also add a TBSP or so of minced garlic to make it garlic cheesy bread.) Directions: Mix all together using a wooden spoon in a bowl. Spread evenly on 4 halves. I wrapped each half in foil, making sure the foil doesn’t touch the cheese. Leave a gap at the top and roll down the foil. Like a teepee! You bake it in the foil for 20-25 minutes at 350′. This will also freeze beautifully. Bake the same way, but for 30 minutes or so, or until warm and melted.

cause our summer was not at all what we expected. While we longed for quiet afternoons on the river, our summer was instead spent keeping close watch over the people we love most through a series of unexpected hospital stays and sudden surgeries. It was a season that drew our family closer than ever through some incredibly tender moments, and next week, I’ll share the story of the bittersweet summer that made us appreciate this autumn peace so much more. As we welcome fall, I end with the recipe for my famous cheesy bread that I pair often with many of my favorite soups. Its cheesy smoothness with the crunchiness of the bread makes it absolutely perfect for dipping into soup on a crisp fall night. I’ve shared it before, and I’ll share it again because it’s that good. Stay tuned for the soup I love having with this bread, and the story about our summer. Wishing you a beautiful shift into the cozy season. Cheesy Bread Ingredients: • 2 loaves of French Bread, cut in half Mix: • 2 cups of Monterey Jack cheese, shredded

What’s more, I like chili made with kidney or black beans (or both) while he prefers it without beans. Who does that? He loves pickled beets. I can’t stand them, although I do enjoy pickled red-beet eggs. Go figure. I absolutely love ripe (black) and Spanish (green) olives while he positively abhors them. I’m sure it bothers him to no end when he sees me enjoying either the black or green variety by the fistful, so I try to get out of his sight when I do. In addition, we’ve gone round and round over the matter of apple dumplings. He thinks they’re a stand-alone meal. I think they qualify as a dessert. Further, I won’t eat scrapple, nor do I trust anyone who does. In fact, the horrendous smell that wafts through the

entire house when it’s cooking repulses me. By the same token, he refuses to eat broccoli or cauliflower and can’t stand the smell when they’re steaming hot. Nor does he trust anyone who would eat such a thing. I don’t even want to know where scrapple comes from. It’s like some sort of mystery meat that I don’t care to sample even though my husband lovingly offers me some each time he makes it. It’s only fair that I offer him broccoli or cauliflower. Another area of dissimilarity involves the manner in which we consume spaghetti or linguini. I, of course, twirl a few noodles with my fork against a spoon or my plate, like a normal person — just like my friend, Theresa. He, on the other hand,

CUTS THE PASTA like a madman. It’s almost criminal and it literally hurts my soul to witness this in person and hear his knife scraping against the plate. In addition, the man eats Lebanon bologna slathered with peanut butter. In all honesty, I just don’t see those two flavors pairing in the same mouthful. I love them both, but would never put them together under any circumstance. That’s just insane. When all is said and done, in our household at least, what I’ve described brings new meaning to the phrase, “food fight.” Welcome to my world. It’s where I live (probably arguing about food). eating. I’ve even been known to add sliced Spanish olives for a nice briny tang. By contrast, he adds sweet pickle relish. I can’t even. So, to resolve this issue in our marriage, we make both kinds of tuna salad as a rule. Speaking of tuna, my husband became ill after eating some tuna noodle casserole ONE time and has refused to eat it ever since then. Mind you, this happened over 50 YEARS AGO. You’d think after that much time had passed, you might be inclined to try the dish again, especially since you love all the ingredients. Nope. Turns out, he had a horrible bout of the flu that night and it had nothing whatsoever to do with the tuna casserole. But there’s no convincing him of that, even still.

Fall Hunting, Fishing & Outdoors Ready, Set, Go! By Jon Pries

he sweltering heat of summer and the days after days of wet weather, followed by the high humidity of July and August, are finally behind us. The last several days of much cooler temperatures and less humidity are a welcome relief and a sign that fall is upon us. The arrival of fall ushers in what many outdoor enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting. It’s time to get READY, SET your plans to get outside and take full advantage of the fall weather, and GO enjoy the wonders that Mother Nature provides us! If I were asked to pick one of the four seasons as my favorite, it would definitely be fall, with its pleasant weather, numerous outside activities, and the often brilliant colors on display in our nearby hardwood forests. After the summer months of draining heat and humidity, you really feel like

getting outside, going for a hike, and getting your lungs filled with the fresh, clean air that is ever-present during the months of fall. The recent discovery of several puffball mushrooms in the yard area and finding a number of oyster mushrooms on the side of a dead ash tree was a great reminder that foraging in nature for edible wild plants is just as productive now as it can be in the spring and summer months. Various puffball mushrooms are edible and quite tasty, as are the oyster mushrooms, but as always when foraging, make sure you positively identify what you are seeking. There are numerous books and an untold number of YouTube videos that can help, and foraging is just one more way to enjoy your time outdoors. With fall just getting underway, it is the ideal time (in between hunting and fishing, of course!) to gather firewood for the soon-to-be-upon-us winter months. Because of the recent infesta-

was completely my fault. The previous fall, I had failed to kill or cut down the grasses and weeds in the area at the base of the seedling and tube. With tall weeds and grass surrounding the tube, the rodents felt safe to tunnel through the unmowed grass nearby and into the tall cover surrounding the seedlings since they were hidden from view of aerial or ground predators. So, here’s the remedy, and what I should have done last fall. At a distance of 3 feet all the way around the seedling and its tube, apply a herbicide such as Roundup (no, I don’t like using chemicals if I can help it, but it is simply the best way to save your seedlings from being destroyed), and after the vegetation has died, use a weed trimmer to completely rid the circle of all dead grass and weeds. Creating this circle that is totally devoid of any vegetation will discourage the rodents from making nests in the tubes. I hope you are one of those folks that love the fall as much as I do. If so, do the final season’s mowing of the lawn, gather your supply of firewood, do a final preparation of your seedlings for the winter, and then pick up a shotgun, a fishing rod, or a hiking stick and get outside and enjoy the fall!

tion of the emerald ash beetle, our hillsides are now left with an abundance of dead ash trees. It is sad to see various tree species being wiped out from time to time, but the upside to all of the ash tree destruction is that ash makes excellent firewood. It cuts and splits easily, easier than most hardwoods, and produces more BTU’s than many of the other hardwoods. Over the last couple of years, for reasons that several foresters I know are unable to explain, there has been a die-off of some chestnut oak (also called rock oak), which will result in a loss of acorns for wildlife, but the oak trees themselves will be a great source of prime firewood. Over the years, in an effort to improve habitat for wildlife, I have planted numerous soft and hard mast tree seedlings, and this last spring I discovered a new problem with some of them. Throughout the winter months, voles and field mice chewed an entry hole in the tree tubes, built a nest of dried grass, and then enjoyed the winter months in their greenhouse-like home. The problem arose when they decided to chew the outer bark of the young seedlings, essentially girdling all the way around the trunk and killing the tree! I must admit that the reason it happened

n Saturday, September 12th, the Lycoming County Beagle Club held its inaugural Youth Day event. Fourteen youth were able to participate in a variety of activities centered around the outdoors. The kids ranged in age starting at 8 to the oldest being 14. Every child was issued a pair of hearing and eye protection, as well as a goodie bag provided by the PA Game Commission. The day started with a bang via a black powder demonstration by yours truly and my dad, Dale Sones. First, a .69 caliber (12ga.) replica civil war cannon was loaded with a blank charge and fired. A .50 caliber flintlock was also fired to illustrate the advancement from black powder to smokeless powder and cartridges. The participants rotated between stations throughout the day. Scott Kilcoyne and his son Jamie gave presentations about trapping and the equipment and techniques employed by trappers. They also featured a variety of furs and mounts, including a mounted fox, otter, and bobcat. Levi Hilkert was on hand to instruct youth on archery as they used a recurve bow and arrows to try to hit a balloon.

The kids were able to learn about fly fishing and were able to tie their own flies with instruction from Gary and Carter Hockenberry and Jacob Hilkert of the Hughesville High School Fly Fishing Club. A variety of shooting events were also held. Sulphyr Springs Rifle Club generously donated the use of their guns and rests. Dave Hawley (President), Don and Jeff Reese gave hands-on instruction to shoot pellet and .22 rifles. Pellet gun shooters shot balloons, while .22 shooters shot at a longer distance at splatter targets. Nancy Trought, also of Sulphyr Springs, was instrumental in helping the day run smoothly. Trap shooting was also available with instruction provided by Beagle Club members Ray Stahl, Oscar Bracey, and me. The participants were also able to experience the handling of hounds in the field. Beagle Club members Levi Miller and Curtis Hendershot brought their beagles to illustrate beagling and the use of them in the

Pennsylvania’s Archery Season Continues to Grow By Ken Hunter

P

ennsylvania’s statewide archery season opens on Oct. 3 and runs to Nov. 20 and then again from Dec. 26 to Jan. 24. In some WMUs to the south of us, the archery season started on Sept. 19. Needless to say, there will likely be a pretty good number of hunters heading out, but that wasn’t always the case. Pennsylvania had its first archery season in 1951, and only 5,542 people purchased a license at a cost of $2.00, and it was for bucks only. Those who hunted in that first season reported killing only 33 bucks. I started archery hunting for deer in the ‘60s when I was still in high school. Back then our archery equipment consisted of a fairly lengthy recurve bow. A “tree stand” consisted of a couple of boards stretched between a couple of sturdy tree limbs and hopefully enough limbs to grab

while climbing into the stand. I hunted for several years before I killed my first buck with that recurve, and my tree stand was nothing more than a good-sized tree limb 10 feet up the tree. Oh, how archery hunting has changed since those early days. Archery hunting slowly grew in Pennsylvania, and in 1957 does were allowed to be taken by bowhunters; the reported archery harvest that year exceeded 1 percent of the total harvest. Archery hunting has grown annually, and today Pennsylvania is one of the leading states for the number of archers and for the number of deer taken. In our last archery season, Pennsylvania had well over 300,000 licensed archery hunters, and those bowhunters harvested an estimated 118,110 deer, which was about 34 percent of the total deer harvest. So, what has caused this big swell in Se e ARCHERY o n Pa g e 3 6

bow hunting popularity? There are a number of things that no doubt made archery hunting more popular, and the bow itself is high on that list. I remember going from the long recurve, which was hard to draw and hold, to the much more comfortable compound bow, which was much easier to draw and could be held in the shooting position much longer. While those changes in bows made a big difference, I suspect the introduction of the crossbow has had an even bigger impact. Once cocked and loaded, it can be fired with the touch of the trigger just like a rifle, and now they are even equipped with scopes just like our rifles. They shoot fast and with a pretty flat trajectory, and even beginners can be pretty accurate. What’s nice too is that the older bowhunters who had difficulty drawing their compounds and holding them can now operate the crossbow much like a rifle. Well, if the advancements in the

bows themselves were not enough, we have also seen big changes in what we now use for tree stands. We now have prebuilt metal tree stands that can easily be taken to our favorite location and put up quickly with little effort. We also have portable stands that are easy and lightweight and can be used to climb a branchless tree to the desired height; I have taken several deer with such a climbing stand. While bows and tree stands are probably two of the biggest advancements, they are also other things that have made archery hunting easier and more enjoyable. I don’t have room to get into details, but improved arrow construction, an increase in the use of a variety of scents, and improved camouflage hunting clothing are other factors that have made archery hunting much more popular these days. Well, it’s time to head out and put some of those great advancements in archery equipment to use.

The Roving Sportsman… Could Bowhunting Be For You? By Jon Pries

E

ven though the Pennsylvania archery season begins in a few short days, it extends all the way to January 24, 2027, and with almost 79 days of archery hunting available, it is not too late to take up the sport. Any new endeavor can sometimes be intimidating and always involves a learning curve of some sort, but in the case of taking up the sport of bowhunting, the rewards are endless, and the process of becoming proficient can be a pleasant experience as well. Developing your ability to consistently place an arrow where you want it to go is largely based on practice, practice, practice. Developing the ability to become a consistently successful bow hunter is more a function of reading as much as you can about bowhunting and asking as many questions of your bowhunting friends as possible. As you gain experience, skill, and understanding, there are a number of pointers that you might keep in mind to help you along the road to feeling totally comfortable in taking game with a bow. Here in Northcentral Pennsylvania, there are quite a number of great privately owned archery stores. Start there to gain knowledge of the latest equipment available, particularly for the beginning bowhunter, and then begin the regimen of practice, practice, practice. Once you have become totally comfortable shooting at a flat target or silhouette of a

game animal in a level open field, practice shooting from a setup like you will be hunting from. If you are going to hunt from a ground blind, then practice shooting from a ground blind. If you expect to hunt from a tree stand, then practice shooting from a tree stand. You will learn to adjust for shooting at downward angles. Being able to accurately judge distance to an intended target of wild game can be difficult. As they move through the brush, or even as they travel in the open, distance can be hard to judge. If you can move undetected, a good range finder is perfect, but all too often your movement will be detected. If you are hunting from a fixed position such as a ground blind or tree stand, memorize distances to known landmarks or consider marking premeasured distances with stakes that indicate distance. Be aware of the maximum range at which you are consistently comfortable shooting and place a stake there as well so you will not be mistakenly shooting at a distance beyond your capability. Study the anatomy of the game you will pursue. There are plenty of books and videos that cover the location of an animal’s vital organs as viewed from various angles. Be particularly aware of the heart and lungs locations, as they will usually be the best shot placement locations. A bad hit in a non-vital area is the last thing any bowhunter wants, especially as they are starting out. Patience, Patience, Patience. Patience is a

for a particular buck that you have spotted earlier. During the archery season, with fewer hunters in the woods and without the intermittent sounds of gunfire to alert wildlife, it is the opportune time to observe and learn wildlife movement and habits. The more time you can spend in the woods during archery season, the more chance you will have of observing and learning, and sometimes witnessing things in nature that most folks will never have the chance of seeing. Becoming a safe, ethical, and proficient bowhunter takes time, and it is a goal that should not be rushed. The more you learn about the animals you hunt, the more woodsmanship skills you develop, and the more you become aware of the effects of wind and concealing your human scent, the more successful you will be as a bowhunter.

key factor in all phases of successful hunting, no matter what you are hunting for at the time. Being as still as possible in your tree stand, or even in a ground blind where your movements are usually concealed, is critical as you wait, sometimes for uncomfortably long periods of time for game to arrive. Once game does arrive, you must try to relax and be patient as you wait for the best shot opportunity. Rushing your shot can easily lead to bad shot placement and result in a bad experience. The archery deer season is a generously long season, beginning statewide on Saturday, October 3 and running until Friday, November 20. A second archery season goes from December 26 until January 24, 2027. So, there is no real need to end the season by taking the first shot possible if you have decided to wait

black bear cross right by the light and head across nearby Muncy Creek. In Pennsylvania, bears are mostly found in the large, forested areas of the state, and much of that is in the northern half of the state. Bears in Pennsylvania currently occupy over three-quarters of the state, but bear sightings have been confirmed in every county of the state. Of course, as our population continues to spread and urban centers continue to expand, sightings and conflicts continue to increase, especially in the southeast and southwest corner of the state.

So how many bears are there in Pennsylvania today? It is believed that the bear population in the 1970s was around 4,000, but today it is estimated at around 18,000 bears. It’s also true that more hunters are successful at taking bears these days. In 2004, hunters took 2,972 bears, and in 2011, 4,350 bears were taken. Sighting a black bear is fairly easy since they are all black, except in some cases there may also be a white mark, sometimes in the form of a prominent “V.” Be aware, too, however, that on

some fairly rare occasions black bears may also turn up a cinnamon color. I have never seen a cinnamon-colored bear in Pennsylvania, but in 2009, while hunting bears and elk in Montana, I was successful in shooting a 200-pound cinnamon bear. Since I have a life-size mount of that bear, I get to see a cinnamon bear every day! Well, if you haven’t seen one of our black bears yet, keep your eyes open, especially now that all of the hunting seasons are beginning. Be on the lookout; one might even show up near your gang’s coffee spot.

I know my wife and I have had several bears show up on cameras we have in the local woods and even in our own yard; one looked like about a 500-pounder walked down our driveway one Sunday morning earlier this summer. An even more surprising sighting was when our coffee gang was at Wendy’s one morning a few weeks ago, and a black bear was spotted crossing the busy road in front of the bank next to Wendy’s. engine that could,’ won its fifth AL East crown this year. They have appeared in two World Series since joining the league in 1988. They lost to the Phillies in five games in 2008 and to the Dodgers in six games in 2020. Colorado is the other team without a World Series winless, being swept by the Red Sox in 2007. This season marked the fourth consecutive 100-game losing season for the Rockies, who began play in 1993. They also have the third-longest playoff drought among MLB season, missing the postseason since 2018. Only the Pirates, 11 years, and the Angels, 12 years, have been futile longer. Since 1969, the longest postseason droughts in MLB have been: Washington Nationals (Montreal Expos) – 29 years – 1982-2011; Kansas City Royals – 27 years – 1986-2013; Texas Rangers – 26 years – 1969-1995; Cleveland Indians – 25 years – 1969-1993; Milwaukee Brewers – 24 years – 1983-2007. Regardless, if your favorite baseball team is not a part of this year’s playoffs, enjoy the games – winter’s coming. Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame outfielder Dave Parker once said, “When the leaves turn brown, I’ll be wearing the batting crown.” Should this year’s World Series reach a November conclusion in Milwaukee, Boston, or Chicago, the battle cry for fans attending might be ‘if you want to go, let’s shovel snow!’

The four-word phrase is still alive and well for fans of the Seattle Mariners, the only MLB team to have never appeared in a World Series. The Mariners had high expectations this year after losing a heartbreaking Game 7 in last year’s ALCS to Toronto. The Mariners also dropped a 7-3 decision to the Mets at Bowman Field last year in the MLB/ Little League Classic game. While Seattle stands alone in missing World Series play, four other MLB teams have never claimed a World Series crown. They include three teams making this year’s playoff field, the Brewers, Padres and Rays. Founded in 1970, the Brewers, then a member of the American League, lost to the Cardinals in a seven-game 1982 Series. They nearly made it back in 2018, taking the Dodgers to Game 7 of the NL Championship Series. Last year they were swept by LA in the NLCS. This year marked the fourth consecutive National League Central Division title for the team as they and the Dodgers went to the wire seeking to claim baseball’s best regular season record. San Diego, one of baseball’s hottest teams during the September stretch, has reached the World Series two times since their founding in 1969, but have managed to win just one game. They lost to Detroit four games to one in 1984 and were swept by the Yankees in 1998. Tampa Bay, MLB’s perennial ‘little
