Bones, Votes, and Nittany Lions

ince my last column, a few folks asked me about Bones, the employee who oversees the candy at the office during the trick-ortreat season. With what I want to cover before the next Webb Weekly comes out November 4th, this seemed like a great spot to start this week’s column. If you guessed Bones is the handsome fella in the Webb Weekly hunting hat with the American Flag on the side, pictured to my right, you got it. He has nothing but treats for anybody who stops by our office, and he’s a great ambassador for Editor Steph’s Bats in the Belfry Bat Counting Bonanza. Bones is perfect to greet all the winners as they pick up their Halloween bucket of fun. Thank you to all the kids who entered this year’s contest and to the parents who lent them a helping hand. As midterm election day falls on November 3rd, I cannot leave Bones behind without reminding everybody to get out and vote! I will be so glad when the political ads end. I’ve always encouraged you to educate yourself in the best way you feel possible before voting. I’ve always stated I don’t care about your party affili-
ation or how you vote; our Country wins by having the most American citizens casting their ballots. What does Bones have to do with that? We should never have anyone in Washington sitting in our elected or appointed chairs until they become bones. This applies to both parties, and if you think Bones resembles either Mitch McConnell or Bernie Sanders, you’re right! This is where I mentioned term limits, people; the problem is those who become the skeletons will never allow it. Three of the best ways to improve and protect the American people with an election process deserving bipartisan support are: 1. Term limits voted on by the American people. 2. A free voters/ American citizenship identification. To be used every time an American votes. This is not a driver’s license. 3. Voting at a polling location. You cannot trust the United States Postal Service with the number of potential ballots handled during an election. There should always be absentee ballots available, but not on the level it’s been taken to. I will not get into all the reasons why the USPS cannot handle an election other than to say I
However, remember they were recruited to play in the Big 12, not in the Big 10. And it goes against common sense to think they would have come in and had the level of success Penn State fans are expecting. It will take three years to give Coach Campbell an honest evaluation. That’s why I hope Penn State fans are patient. Whether you’re heading up to Happy Valley or enjoying all the fall activities, especially trick-or-treating or trunk-ortreating, let’s all be extra careful out there. Just a reminder to all parents and guardians: please check the kiddos’ treats. Don’t ever assume; be sure. And remember, 15% goes to the parental inspector. God Bless America.

deal with them more than most. I’ll finish this week with a topic I’ve been asked about a lot. I hope after you read this, Penn State has defeated Purdue, earning rookie Head Coach Matt CampJim Webb Jr. bell his first Big Ten win. Please be patient, Penn State fans! They will make a bowl game this year, but it will take a little time to rebuild the Nittany Lions. Coach Campbell will build a nationally contending program if given the time. He is an outstanding coach, with the right perspective on how to build a program and a football culture. You must remember the circumstances: after the firing of James Franklin during the season, a lot of time elapsed before the hiring of Coach Campbell. This enabled most of Penn State’s best players to relocate, many to Virginia Tech with Franklin. It also tied the new coaching staff’s hands as far as recruiting. Most top recruits, through current NIL rules, had decided where they were playing and were getting paid significantly for it. It’s fortunate for the Blue and White Coach Campbell brought as many players as he did with him from Iowa State.

Happy Halloween…
F ounder James Webb Sr. 1944-2012
By Steph Noviello
H
oly smokes it’s Halloween! How did we get here already?! Wasn’t it just the 4th of July? Now we are falling back an hour and staring down the barrel of short days, and cold! But before all that — make sure you’re all set with comfy shoes and your favorite hoodie. Don’t forget those extra candy bags, flashlights, and batteries! And maybe grab some Tums for when you inevitably overindulge in those delicious Reese’s! Everything looks like it’s in place for a super fun and Happy Halloween! As we gear up for all the Hallo-fun, let’s remember to stay safe, especially if you’re out on the roads after 6 p.m. on Saturday. Kids will be buzzing with energy, and they might not be paying the best attention. They’ll definitely need our watchful eyes, and let’s be real — sometimes adults can get a bit caught up in the excitement, too! While everyone wants to enjoy the spookiest night of the year, safety is our top priority for both trick-or-treaters and their adults. With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, things could get a little more chaotic. So, let’s all be good people and neighbors and keep an extra eye out! Before you send the kiddos out and about, let’s give them a good base to put all that sugar on. This is a popular dinner in my house, and it’s also quick and easy. Carbs and protein are just the thing to fill the littles up and keep them fueled on Halloween night! Corn Dog Casserole Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 cups whole milk • 2 large eggs • About 1 teaspoon hot sauce or to taste • 1 to 2 tablespoons yellow mustard • 2 8.5-ounce boxes corn muffin mix, such as Jiffy • Black pepper to taste • Garlic powder to taste • 1 standard package hot dogs sliced into rounds and browned • 8 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese divided • 1 can chili without beans – optional Directions: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly coat a 9-by13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. If you have not already done so, slice the hot dogs into rounds and brown them in a large skillet. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole milk, eggs, hot sauce, and yellow mustard. Add both boxes of corn muffin mix and stir until combined. Season the batter with black pepper and garlic powder to taste. Fold in the browned hot dogs and about half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer. If using chili, spoon it over the top in dollops. Use the back of the spoon to lightly swirl it across the surface without fully mixing it into the batter. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Bake uncovered for about 30 minutes, until the
center is set and the casserole is golden around the edges. Let the casserole rest for a few minutes, then scoop or cut into portions and serve. And remember, Halloween celebrations are just getting started and will carry on throughout the weekend. With options like Uber and Lyft, there’s no reason not to have a safe way to get home. As always, get home safe so others can get home safe! It’s not our Halloween issue without the announcement of the winners of our Halloween contest! Congratulations to the following winners of our Bat Bonaza Halloween Contest! – Braylee Campbell – Bradley Wozniak – Riley DeLong – Cheyenne Hostrander – Lucia Parker – Emma Hannon – Makayla – Sullivan Steppe – Hayden Dibble – Atiya Butler Your prizes can be picked up in our office at 280 Kane St. South Williamsport, Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Fridays we are here until around 1 p.m. By the time you read this, all winners have been contacted! In case you are curious — the final total was 128 Bats. There were 67 in the October 14th edition and 61 in the October 21st edition. We want to offer our sincerest thanks to everyone who entered! Because of all your counting, we will be donating $500 to SPCA! Seriously, y’all are amazing! I received a ton of entries in this year’s contest! And as always, thank you to Jimmy for always giving a little extra in these contests!

O
nce upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore — While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door — Only this and nothing more.” Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December; And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; — vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow — sorrow for the lost Lenore — For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore — Nameless here for evermore. And the silken, sad, uncertain rus-
tling of each purple curtain Thrilled me — fi lled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating “’Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door — Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; — This it is and nothing more.” Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer, “Sir,” said I, “or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore; But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping, And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door, That I scarce was sure I heard you” — here I opened wide the door; — Darkness there and nothing more. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no
mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?” This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore!” — Merely this and nothing more. Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning, Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before. “Surely,” said I, “surely that is something at my window lattice; Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore — Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; — ’Tis the wind and nothing more!” Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a fl irt and flutter, In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore; Not the least obeisance made he; not
a minute stopped or stayed he; But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door — Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door — Perched, and sat, and nothing more. Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling, By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore, “Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven, Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore — Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!” Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.” Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly, Though its answer little meaning — little relevancy bore; For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door — Se e RAVEN o n Pa g e 8

FALL OUTFIT easily be carried as the day gets warmer. With this combo up top, you can wear jeans, skirts, trousers, or swap in a sweater dress and leggings. Banana Republic Factory has a Vegan Leather Cropped Moto Jacket in classic black and dark mahogany, both shades on sale. I’m leaning toward the brown-esque mahogany for a more fall feeling. Whether you’re buying new, second-hand, or already have a leather jacket, try it with the above formula as well as a leather jacket + midi skirt. The silhouette of the jacket will help determine the skirt. A cropped moto could pair with the plaid midi skirt from above to create a subtle punk outfit of leather and plaid. A bomber-style jacket like Loft’s Oversized Faux Leather Bomber Jacket gives you volume up top, so for a balanced silhouette you’d pair it with a straighter pencil midi like the brand’s Versa Ponte Deluxe Midi Pencil Skirt. If you have a leather blazer, then to create some visual contrast you may want to pair it with a flowy or lace-trimmed skirt. This formula asks the wearer to think about proportion a bit more than the others, but that just gives you more uses from this combination to switch things up. Lastly, we have sweater + balloon
pants + dramatic jewelry. This one may seem a bit wacky, but stay with me. Balloon pants are just the latest iteration of a voluminous pant. Think of drop-crotch pants, harem pants, or bloomers even from years past. Any pant with volume can be a lot on its own, so ground it with a simple knit. From there, this look is all about the jewelry. A pendant necklace completes this outfit. For a more boho vibe, there’s Etsy seller Karnival0412’s Oversized Green Resin Pendant that features a glossy deep green centerpiece set in a textured, hammered-look gold metal frame. To elevate a big pant sweater combo, consider Ettika’s Open Circle Statement Necklace available at Nordstrom in either gold or silver for a sleek, chic version of this outfit formula. These formulas are a bit more versatile than last week’s, utilizing classics and basics you probably already have, while a few new statement pieces help elevate these looks. Next week is part 3 and, yes, I have more formulas to share. If you’re interested in some daily outfit formula inspiration and you’re on Instagram, check out this creator: Mama In Denim. She produces videos with inspiration photos of versatile outfit formulas to try.

County Hall Corner: A Strong Operation By Blair Steward
T
he Lycoming County Commissioners met on October 15th to approve spending and contracts that keep county services running smoothly. The board authorized approximately $2.48 million in accounts payable, with expenses covered using a mix of the county general fund, local ARPA allocations, and Act 13 funds. The spending reflects routine operational costs across multiple county departments and services. The commissioners approved a legal services contract to conduct a secondary review of the county’s data center zoning ordinance. This review evaluates how new commercial data facilities are regulated and built within the county. The secondary review comes as the county continues working through its 180-day zoning amendment process to establish stricter regulations before additional development proposals arrive. The board awarded a $15,500 contract to Chriswell Egg Services LLC to provide fertilizer and application services for the county-owned farm. The farm continues to operate as a county asset, and these maintenance services keep the land productive and operational. The commissioners authorized a budgeted agreement to secure as-needed sign
language interpreter services for local court proceedings. The service maintains accessibility requirements for residents who are deaf or hard of hearing and need to participate in the court system. Access to legal proceedings is a fundamental right, and the county ensures that language barriers do not prevent anyone from having their day in court. Officials also cleared annual maintenance renewals for court stenograph machinery and finalized an agreement for specialized medical assessment services. These routine approvals keep the infrastructure supporting the local court system functioning properly and ensure that medical evaluations can be conducted when the justice system requires them. The October 15th meeting demonstrated how county government moves forward through consistent operational approvals. Fertilizer gets ordered for the farm. Court equipment gets maintained. Interpreters get secured. Zoning gets reviewed. None of these items generate headlines or spark controversy. They are simply the work of government ensuring that services continue, that facilities operate, and that residents can access the systems they depend on. The commissioners moved through each approval methodically, understanding that governance is often about the unglamorous work of keeping everything running.

inal plans for the “Better Baby Show” conducted by Williamsport Forest #75 Tall Cedars of Lebanon will be completed this week. Fully 200 of Lycoming County’s baby population will match their physical perfections against one another for 12 prizes for the 12 healthiest babies when the contest is opened at the armory on Monday. The babies will be first be stripped, weighed and measured and then passed from one physician to another. The examinations will be made from a regular health form of chart, and after the examinations are completed the health charts showing the exact health sta-
tus of every child will be returned to its parents. Thirty prominent Williamsport physicians, including 18 baby specialists have offered their services to the Williamsport chapter of the Tall Cedars Lodge, and will assist with the examinations of the babies. Dr. Charles D. Wolfe, chairman of the doctors’ committee stated that the doctors are deeply interested in the welfare of the children and were ready to render any service necessary to assist the local lodge of Tall Cedars a success. All parents who have their babies entered in the show and who have not received their health chart are requested to report to the Tall Cedars club house not later than Saturday evening.

Happy About Grumpy: That Bookstore in Liverpool By Joseph W. Smith III
I
wager most Webb readers have driven down to Harrisburg from our area — cruising along that lovely stretch of Route 15 beside the broad and treelined Susquehanna River. Among other things, you can often spot bald eagles on this drive (more on those later!). But perhaps you’ve also wondered about that odd-looking bookstore right next to the highway in Liverpool. Situated in a large yellow house about 60 miles south of us, Grumpy’s Used Books doesn’t look like much from the outside; but inside, it’s a jam-packed labyrinth holding somewhere around 30,000 volumes. The place is among my all-time favorite spots for used books; and I make the pilgrimage twice or thrice a year — though lately, I’ve tried to limit myself to just a couple of titles. (Running out of room in my house — and, to be honest, time in my life!) On a recent visit, I checked out with three good picks: a paperback mystery by the estimable British master Anna Clarke; a student dictionary with teacher helps; and the fanciful, slender, self-published story of a crab named Sam — signed by the author. (This was, incidentally, after waiting in line behind a large Amish family that left with over $300 worth of reading — mostly old kids’ books for their excited brood.)
As I was heading out, the proprietor, Mike Mioff — a friendly fellow despite his store’s grouchy monicker — pointed me to several new bins that had just arrived. These were mostly military history; but tucked among them was another dictionary. (By now, readers know that I collect these helpful tools.) This was a pretty priceless find: Bryan A. Garner’s Dictionary of Modern American Usage, covering grammar, punctuation, spelling, stylistic matters and — principally — numerous distinctions between such pairs as affect/effect, farther/further, that/which and flaunt vs. flout. I am still so thrilled with this last-minute pick that I plan to focus on it for our next several columns about “Weird Words” — of which Garner offers many: whilom, tmesis, defalcate and corrigendum, to name a few. So far, my favorite section is the one called “Animal Adjectives.” All ending in -ine, these include familiar terms like canine, for dogs; feline, for cats; and of course, serpentine for snakes. While I knew some of the rarer ones like ovine (sheep), ursine (bears) and bovine (cows), I was surprised to see more than 50 altogether. And they all derive from the original Latin for that given animal — as with canis, meaning “dog” (from which we get kennel). Likewise, the Latin equus has given us not only equine, but also equestrian and even the prehistoric horse eophippus.

zodiac sign Cancer (the disease is named for its tendency to gnaw away at the body — sort of like claws); piscine (for fish — a la Pisces); and taurine for the ox or bull. A few more that may sound familiar: Lupine for wolf; cervine for deer (they’re in the family Cervidae); ermine for weasel; leporine for the hare (which is in the genus Lepus); and vulpine for fox. And to finish with some of the more outlandish: lumbricine (earthworm); viverrine (mongoose); soricine (shrew); zibeline (sable); and scolopendrine (centipede). And all these animal-words constitute just one entry in Garner’s fascinating 1998 book — from which I’ll mine more from in future weeks. With additional plugs for Grumpy’s, too!

Others include avine, referring to birds in general — with subgroups as follows: Accipitrine (hawks; related to the genus-word accipiter). Anserine (geese). Hirundine (swallows). Corvine (crows — again, related to the better-known corvid, a broad category of common birds). Likewise, passerine refers to sparrows, but is also a vast order that includes more than half of all living birds. Larine refers to gulls; pavonine to peacocks; picine to woodpeckers; and the jaw-breaking struthionine to ostriches. For me, the most eye-opening bird-word was aquiline. Most often used to describe a sharply curved nose, it literally means “eagle-like.” Three others connect to the zodiac: cancrine, for crabs — related of course, to the

ous and googled them and what they ate. That same day I put a white bowl out with all kinds of different goodies. It didn’t take him but a few minutes to swoop down and check out what was in this bowl. He was hesitant at first, wondering what the bowl was, but once he trusted it, he jumped on the edge to get his treats out. That’s how it started. After a few weeks of doing this, I decided he needed a name and felt like a Larry to me. It just felt right. So every time I take him and his buddies out to eat, I always greet him with a, “Good Morning Larry!” or “Larry, your breakfast is ready buddy!” Months later I noticed a bright blue bread clip in his bowl. room. All of a sudden, over my Christmas music (yes, it’s October 18th, don’t judge me! haha), I swore I heard Larry, so I paused my music. Sure enough, there he was outside our window in a tree squawking at me, saying, “Get my food, woman!” He literally saw me sitting inside and was trying to get my attention! I was cracking up! I got up, got his bowl, and filled it with his favorite goodies. He lovessss carbs. Bread is his favorite, but I try not to give him a whole lot. Not because I’m worried about an overweight crow running around, but because I don’t want him filling up with something with no nutritional value. It’s not healthy for them. I often fill his bowl with some of Bear’s food, sliced grapes, Goldfish, nuts, and did you know they love meat!? Oh, he got some of my hoagie one night, and boy did he love that! (Usually Bear gets that, but that night Larry got lucky because Bear already had too much to eat.) I do my research on the animals I feed and plants I grow. I want to know all the things. I have had a few people ask me, “Andrea, how do you train a crow to come in like that?” Honestly, I would just hear him and friends out bickering with one another. They would carry on, and would eat the corn I put out. One day I just got curi-

another random piece of plastic. After that was a pretty feather. Did you know once crows get a routine, and know you are befriending them, they will thank you by bringing random gifts!? Yup, it’s true, and Larry has brought me three gifts this year. It’s official, we are best friends. How can I tell which one is my Larry among his friends, you ask? Larry is the biggest of them all. Larry doesn’t share well with others. Larry has a special white strip down the right side of his wing. Larry knows me, and I know him. Larry makes me laugh. I love Larry. You know who else I love!? Bonnie and Clyde! Remember our skelly friends, Bonnie and Clyde, who get into some kind of theme each year? You never know what those buggers will be up to every year! Well, I promised each year at Halloween I would show you. They were very frightful this year. Our new pal Sparky chased them up a tree, and they haven’t come down yet! Bonnie is literally hanging on to that branch for dear life, with her long black hair hanging beneath her. I don’t blame them, though; Sparky’s eyes glow red, and he barks. (Motion activated.) But I truly think his bark is bigger than his bite. Happy Halloween! In light of Bonnie & Clyde, here is an
idea for any Halloween cup to add a spook factor this Halloween. Mine happens to be in a skelly mug, which goes with this column beautifully. All I did was put corn syrup in a small bowl and mix in green food coloring so it looked like slime. You could use red for blood, or orange/purple for Halloween colors. Dump the corn syrup onto a small flat saucer. Turn your cup upside down and dip it in it. Twist it around a bit to make sure you have enough that it runs down the cup. Kenzy was absolutely obsessed when I did this for her for breakfast last Halloween.

oni Gamble was an accomplished musician, having performed with the notable 1970s and 1980s soul group “The Sylistics,” and other groups such as “Sound Cheque,” and he was a community activist and mentor for youth in the Williamsport area for many years. On Friday, October 30 at 7 p.m., Loni’s life will be celebrated in a “Loni Gamble Tribute Concert,” presented by I & J Productions Jamuel Dickerson and Rodney Anderson are two of the organizers from I &J of this tribute concert, and they told Webb Weekly about how it came about. “After my partner and I spoke with the Stylistics, we figured this would be the perfect opportunity to recognize and show appreciation for the impact Loni Gamble had on the community.” They got involved because of the relationship and positive experience Loni had with the Stylistics. They said that Loni was a worthy
subject for a tribute concert because “All those who knew Loni Gamble know of his contributions to our youth and families in the Williamsport community.” Loni founded the Kennedy King Youth Intervention and Development Project and Basketball League, a structured program that eventually became the Community Alliance for Positive Progressive Action (CAPPA). As Executive Director of CAPPA, Loni’s leadership provided scholastic mentorship, gang prevention tips, and computer technology instruction to at-risk youth. CAPPA has touched so many lives in Williamsport throughout the past 20 years. Loni later founded the Young Gentlemen, aka YG’s Performing Arts and Life Skills Project. The Young Gentlemen Project is a program that provides meaningful and vital hands-on experiences and opportunities to young males through music and the performing arts. The YG’s program is designed to motivate and inspire at-risk youth who are not emotionally connected to

The organizers expect that the concert will be an opportunity for everyone to experience and enjoy two worldwide groups performing on the “same stage, same night” while listening to and rocking to the 60s- 70s, as well as paying tribute to Loni and all that he represented. I
want to start my article this week with a shout-out to everyone who had a hand in putting on the 79th Annual Mummers Day Parade in South Williamsport. My wife and I took Beau down to his first parade, and he loved it. We had a great time, and it was one of those days that I know will be a core memory for our family. While I was standing there watching the parade, I got to thinking, and that’s actually what gave me the idea for this week’s article. Now, I’m a Loyalsock Lancer to my
core. My wife and I both graduated from there, but we currently live in the South Williamsport community. And I have to give credit where credit is due. There is something pretty special happening in Mountie land. The sense of community pride in South Williamsport is something that really stood out to me. Everyone at the parade seemed genuinely happy to be there. People were smiling, talking, supporting those participating, and just enjoying everything that was going on around them. It was awesome to see. And it’s not just the parade.
One thing I think is really cool about South Williamsport is that it still has that Friday night football feeling. You know what I’m talking about. The kind of Friday night where it feels like the whole town shuts down Jimmy for a football game. Webb III You can hear the roar of the crowd and the band playing from streets away. There is just something special about that. And from what I’ve seen, that pride goes beyond football. The students seem
to take pride in their school, support their classmates, and genuinely enjoy cheering each other on. I actually witnessed a pretty cool example of that at the parade. I want to give a special shout-out to the South Williamsport varsity cheerleaders. They were standing near us as the parade was getting ready to start, and I noticed them cheering for the different people and groups coming through. But what really caught my attention was their interaction with the younger Mountie cheerleaders. As the parade got started, the varsity girls walked with the little cheerleaders, cheering with

talking about just showing up when your family member is playing. I’m talking about showing up because you’re proud of your community and want to support the people in it. The same goes for events outside of sports. Parades, school plays, concerts, fundraisers, festivals, and community gatherings all take people willing to put in time and effort to make them happen. Well, Beau started getting cold, so we decided to walk home. But on our walk, I got to thinking. Lately, I’ve had the mindset that as long as I’m taking care of my family and keeping to myself, I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. But maybe I’ve been looking at it wrong. God wants us to be part of a community, encourage others, and spread His word through our actions. How can we do that if we never get out and interact with others? Family will always come first, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be part of something bigger. So get out, support your community, and be there for others. You never know whose life you might impact just by showing up. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another. ~ Hebrews 10:24–25

them and making them feel like they were part of something special. You could tell how much it meant to those younger girls. Something that probably seemed so simple to those varsity cheerleaders may have made those little girls’ entire day. That’s the kind of stuff that makes a community special. So what’s my point in all of this? I think sometimes we’re losing that sense of community in the world we live in today. We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that we forget to slow down and enjoy what’s happening right in front of us. We’re busy with work and everything else life throws our way. I’m guilty of it too. But I think sometimes we forget how important it is to show up. Show up for the kids playing football on a Friday night. Show up for the basketball team on a Tuesday evening. Show up for the school concert, the parade, the fundraiser, or whatever else might be happening in your community. I’ve driven by football games and attended basketball games around the area where it’s honestly sad to see how few people are in the stands. These kids are working hard, representing their schools, and doing something they love. How cool would it be if more people from the community came out just to support them? And I’m not

gered asthma or allergies, reducing places where dust accumulates can be one component of environmental management. To declutter, begin with a place that repeatedly gets in your way, such as a drawer that will not close, a chair covered with belongings, or a counter needed for cooking. Work for a short, manageable period instead of emptying a whole room. Separate possessions into items to keep, donate, recycle, or discard, and be sure to check important documents before disposal. Give useful belongings sensible homes near where they are used. Completing one small area before opening another can keep the process manageable and prevent a larger sorting project from overwhelming the space. Decluttering doesn’t mean you need to get rid of things you care about. Keep possessions that carry meaning and allow time for difficult decisions. In shared spaces, agree on priorities rather than tossing someone else’s property. People differ in how much visual activity feels comfortable, and a home does not need to resemble a showroom. Ultimately, the value of decluttering is measured by function, not perfection. Can you find necessary items, move safely, clean accessible surfaces, and enjoy the rooms you use? An organized home does not have to stay flawless, and occasional clutter is just part of life. However, sustainable changes can make room for everyday life without turning tidiness into another obligation. The most helpful result is not fewer possessions for their own sake, but a home that works better for you.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Check for Safety home fall-prevention checklist recommends removing these objects and keeping walking paths clear. Frequently used routes, including the path between the bedroom and bathroom, are useful places to begin. Sorting should not create fresh hazards, so avoid leaving piles in doorways or on stairs. Ask for help when objects are heavy or awkward to handle. Look beyond obvious piles to smaller obstacles that interrupt a clear walking route. Electrical cords crossing the floor, loose throw rugs, and furniture that forces you to squeeze past can also create trip hazards. The CDC checklist recommends keeping cords next to walls and removing loose rugs or securing them with non-slip backing. Store shoes and bags outside walking paths and keep stairs free of belongings rather than using them as temporary storage. Good lighting helps make remaining obstacles visible, especially along the route from bed to bathroom. Decluttering cannot prevent every fall, but keeping these routes clear removes avoidable hazards and makes everyday movement through the home easier. Clearing piles also makes dusting and vacuuming easier. In Improving Your Indoor Environment, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends decluttering alongside damp dusting and vacuuming to help reduce asthma triggers, allergens, pests, and pollutants. While removing belongings does not eliminate dust or correct moisture problems, it makes surfaces accessible for cleaning. For people affected by dust-trig-

Now I rekindle the abundance of memories I possess standing somewhere besides the kitchen when I want to revisit a time when they were all here. Of course, I’ve included images of our current cats who are alive and well in that room, too. It’s a far cry from the coveted fridge space, I suppose, but it’ll have to do. Welcome to my world. There are favorite images of our twins caught in mid-performance in the marching band they so loved, some of them during their college years, some printouts of old holiday greeting cards we had made, some of my parents and mother-in-law who have since passed away, a dear church friend we also lost and even a picture of our old fridge — the one that was inundated with the trappings of life. I also added a smattering of pics (and even an ultrasound image) of our granddaughter, who is now eight. I think the pics of the pets we’ve lost get to me the most. They pull at my heartstrings. Even though our curlyhaired, pint-sized Bichon whizzed indiscriminately on the floor almost every day and our 95-lb. yellow lab “puppy” occasionally dragged us across the street because she wanted to eat other dogs, I still miss them. And our black lab mix, with the caramel-colored eyes that made me melt — he is missed, too, along with our black cat, Mr. Binx, once feral and eventually tamed. And I can’t forget our long-haired orange tabby, who was known for fetching things like a dog and for sleeping on whoever happened to be ill, to perhaps make them

liness. Jesus called them hypocrites: Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. Matthew 23:27-28 This is why Paul urges: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 When your mind has been renewed by God’s transformational grace, you will know his good, pleasing and perfect will. You won’t need a list of rules to govern your life. You won’t be forced to conform to a pattern. You will no longer be enslaved to legalism. You will live with nothing to hide. In complete maturity, you will be free to whole-heartedly follow Jesus. You will be free indeed! Before wrapping up, I want to reaffirm the value of conformation as a level of discipleship. Rule-following will help you to avoid some of the nasty stuff out there in the world. It will also help you to clean up some of the nasty stuff you were doing before Jesus saved you. Yes, conformation is good and necessary. I’m not being critical of it, I’m just challenging you and the church not to get stuck in it. Jesus has so much more in store for you. Again, don’t stop short of freedom! In our next conversation, we’ll look at the third level of discipleship: reformation.

level. That leads us to a discipleship trap: too many disciples like following rules. They find a church with a list of rules they can comfortably conform to, while secretly doing whatever they want. They fool themselves into thinking it is freedom. It is not; it is duplicity. Living two separate lives forces a person to maintain coverups, and that’s a heavy load to carry. It also creates the fear of being caught. Living with something to hide and something to fear is not freedom; it is slavery. Disciples who live in conformity often express that religion is a wearisome obligation. They’re right. Religious legalism is a trap. Conformation can also be a trap for churches. The temptation is to focus on rule-following because it is easier to achieve than heart-and-mind transformation. Conformation creates disciples that can be controlled. It is less risky, and far less messy. It only requires the enforcement of an agreed-upon outward standard of behavior. The goal is for everyone to look and act the same. Too many churches fall into this legalistic trap, and the results are lukewarm. Jesus made it clear he is not at all pleased with lukewarm. He wants us to be hot with spiritual passion, and legalism falls well short of that goal. See Revelation 3:14-22. Teenagers can be very good at looking good, while also keeping their parents totally unaware of their secret activities. The same is true for list-following Christians who look good publicly while maintaining a private life that falls well short of real ho-

It almost sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? In the new novel, “Mazywood” by Tananarive Due, it is. Johnny Washington needed a vacation. As a Hollywood screenwriter, his life was one long string of stresses and the latest problem was the last straw. His daughters, Sharise and Imani, were teenagers now — Sharise would leave for college soon - but Johnny’s wife, Tasha, just learned that she was pregnant again. Was that welcome news? They weren’t quite sure yet. Then Tasha suggested a

weekend getaway at Big Bear, to the lodge he’d inherited from his grandmother, Mazelle, putting Johnny even more on-edge. The daughter of vaudeville entertainers, Mazelle Washington had big dreams. One of them came true after she wished for a “best friend forever,” and she found a dirty stray dog on her way home, a dog that turned out to have a strange mental connection with her. Scout would do anything Mazelle wanted. Anything at all. A trained dog and a cute kid were Hollywood catnip and Mazelle and Scout became famous movie stars in racist roles that embarrassed Mazelle, but her contract kept the family afloat. Later, after being phased out of kiddie movies because of puberty, she took a brief hiatus before returning to Hollywood where, encouraged by the likes of Hattie McDaniel and Clark Gable, she hoped to revive her career. Instead, she was contracted for a movie series in which she played a shiftless Jim-Crow-era maid the producer called “Lazy Mazy.” When Mazelle learned that she’d been

Then, keeping you wrapped in that tale, Due makes you understand that those cautions won’t help, that monsters know no boundaries. That makes readers squirm with a deliciously foreboding sense, starting at page one. Oh, and there’s authenticity and history inside this novel, like icing on the cake. Kick off your front-of-the-fireplace, dark-of-night reading season with this nice, hefty book. Take “Mazywood,” lock the doors, head to your easy chair, and never mind about relaxing.

The Roving Sportsman… Great Use of Venison By Jon Pries
T
he statewide muzzleloader season concluded on October 25, and the four-day Junior and Senior special firearms season for antlerless deer has just come to a close as well. The statewide archery season has been underway since October 3, and is now approaching the time that most archers have been waiting for — the beginning of the rutting activity. If Lady Luck has been with you and you have some fresh venison, here are a few ideas as to how to use it. Venison Steak: This is the best use of the backstrap or inner tenderloin. Butterfly steaks can be sliced 1 1/4 inches thick, or the backstrap can be cut into a longer length, depending on how many servings you want. High in protein, low in cholesterol, and pleasing to the palate - especially cooked over a wood fire — a venison steak is simply hard to beat. There are
two tricks to having it turn out to be a crowd-pleasing entrée. A light coating of Italian dressing or Gazebo Room Greek dressing will keep the meat from sticking to the hot grill and will not detract from the great taste. Secondly, and most importantly, do NOT overcook venison. For the flavor of venison to be at its maximum, it should be cooked to medium-rare or medium, then allowed to rest for 4-5 minutes before serving. Any venison cooked beyond medium (toward well-done) becomes tougher and less flavorful. Canned Venison: Probably one of the most overlooked ways of storing venison for months to come is to can it. It is a simple process and can be used for any venison or beef. While you may use either the water bath method or a pressure canner, the safer method to ensure thorough cooking of the meat is to use a pressure canner. Begin by trimming away any fat, gristle, or bruised meat, and then cube the meat into 1-inch pieces. Pack the meat into hot canning jars, leaving a 1-inch

This is a great way to keep venison for an extended period of time, especially if you have an older freezer or are concerned about electrical power loss for any length of time. Once you have tried canning venison, you will wonder why you hadn’t been doing it before! Snack Sticks and Jerky: One of the most popular uses of venison is in the making of jerky or snack sticks. Either use venison burger or strips of meat cut cross-grain. High Mountain Seasonings makes a wide variety of flavors in their jerky seasoning and cure packaging. Simply follow their instructions in adding the mixes to the venison and then finish the sticks or strips off in your oven, in a smoker, or in a dehydrator. They are great for snacking or including in a day pack when you are headed out for a day of fishing, hiking, or hunting. Venison is one of the healthiest meats you can consume. It simply does not have all of those “government-approved chemicals!” In addition to all the usual methods of using the meat as steaks, roasts, and venison burgers, try making the snack sticks or jerky and store some of the meat as canned venison — you will be glad you did!

headspace. Add canning salt if desired — I like to use 1 tsp per quart. Do not add liquid! The meat will produce its own juice. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to get out some of the large air bubbles. You won’t get it all out, but try to eliminate the large gaps and air bubbles. Wipe the rims of the jars clean — this is an important step to ensure proper sealing of the lids. Use a wet paper towel and wipe around each jar rim. Place the warmed lids on the jars and screw the bands finger tight. Place the jars in your preheated pressure canner so they are not touching each other. Follow your pressure canner instructions, adjusting the requirements for your elevation. Process pint jars for 1 hour and 15 minutes and quart jars for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once the meat has been properly canned, it has many uses. A jar kept in the refrigerator can provide a quick snack or can be used in preparing a sandwich with the canned meat. If you prefer heating the meat, consider making gravy in the process. Then serve the meat and gravy over rice or pasta. The meat and juice can be used in casseroles or stews, as well as in spaghetti sauce or chili.

I took 11 largemouths in a friend’s pond with the white spinnerbait; one was over 20 inches and weighed six pounds. As I checked my records, I also found that leadhead jigs and grubs or tubes in brown and white also produced well. As I already mentioned, trout fishing can also be productive during those fall days. When I went through some of my trout fishing data from 20-plus years ago, I found I had taken a number of trout with a fly rod and a wooly-bugger. Another fly that showed up a lot was the salmon egg pattern, and I still make use of it these days. In recent years, I have gone to using a large dry fly like a Royal Coachman, and then I tie a length of line to the bend of the hook and add an egg pattern or a nymph pattern. I vary the length of the line with the egg or nymph according to the depth of the water I’m fishing. The point is there’s more to the fall season than just hunting. Certainly we will do some hunting, but I don’t want to forget that there’s still some great fishing to be had.

include any other information that seems pertinent, like water conditions, weather conditions, and specific locations where fish were taken or located. I haven’t been out fishing much during the past few fall seasons, but as all serious fishermen know, some good catches are still possible this time of year, and I’m talking about warm water species and even trout. When I started digging into my records, I wanted to reaffirm what lures were my best fall producers. During the month of October and even into November, I found I was still taking bass on surface lures like the Jitterbug and chuggers, and propbaits were also good producers. One of my top fall producers was the white spinnerbait with a Colorado blade. Because of the shape of the blade, this spinnerbait can be reeled more slowly but still provide good action. You can also catch some good-sized bass during the fall season. According to my records (and those records don’t lie or exaggerate), on 10/27 in the year 2000

Now, as a senior, it would be the fi rst time since Doug’s basketball game that I would have any official involvement in an athletic contest involving a relative. From my press box seat next to current Lycoming SID Joe Gustina, it is my statistical responsibility to report the identity of the offensive player making the play to Joe, who then records it on his computer. Doing my job, but this time with the ‘one eye theory’ intact, a pass was headed in the direction defended by Tucker. The pass fell incomplete; Tucker had done his job when Joe asked forcefully, “Who was the pass intended for?” “Sorry, Joe, I didn’t see it,” was the only reply I could honestly give. On that one play, I screwed up. From the look on Joe’s face, I think he understood why.

Throughout my many years of coaching, broadcasting, reporting, keeping stats, and watching athletic contests, I have concluded that parental and grandparental views of the games they are watching may differ a bit from the reality of what is taking place. For very understandable reasons, the love of offspring commands their attention. One year, while keeping the scorebook for my son Doug’s South Williamsport High School basketball team, that theory was embarrassingly evident. It was Doug’s senior year, and his team needed to win three of the fi nal four games to reach the playoffs. I was seated midcourt at the scorer’s table during a physically contested game at Jersey Shore. Driving to the basket, Doug was called for a charge, which my eyes saw as a defensive block. Literally seconds later, at the other end of the court, the ref’s whistle blew, and he was nailed for a block call. Biased fatherly instincts immediately got the best of me. I stood up at the scorer’s table shouting my frustration at the stripped-shirted duo. The referee, who I knew, came to the table with every right to throw me out of the gym. He calmly

Rose Valley for eons. Hundreds of photos. Many fantastic memories. She will be back. Rose Valley was constructed in the mid 60s. The idea of a recreational lake was tossed around for several years. It took eight seasons for the Fish and Boat Commission to build her. They blocked and redirected Mill Creek by creating a dam measuring 25 feet high and 410 feet long. Water eventually poured into the basin to form our existing lake. Again. This dam is the reason for our concerns. And this is why we must drain the lake. Our local politicians have done their best to update the masses. Change is never fun. It is never easy. A few are very disgruntled. I get it. Rose Valley is undergoing a major facelift. Once construction begins, the project is expected to
last one and a half years. The current timeline is to have everything finished by 2030. The lake refill should take 6-9 months. The PA Fish and Boat will reintroduce fish immediately after the lake fills. Fisheries staffers plan to stock species that are current. Hang in there, folks. I am still optimistic. This should all work out for the better. This remains a proactive approach to make Rose Valley Lake shine. My fingers are crossed. Not for me. For the next generation of enthusiasts. Hundreds of memories. Rose Valley is a fantastic place. Cheers.
