An All-American Salute to Service
A
Webb Weekly salute and thank you to our veterans. Without all these special men and women who have put everything on the line, we would not have the liberty and freedoms we are so very blessed with. What began during the Revolutionary War has needed the constant sel ess co it ent of the nited tates ar ed forces to rst earn rotect and defend our one Nation under God for over 250 years. It is often overlooked or maybe not understood that our Nation has been at ar or con ict basically since its founding. There are only about a handful of years this hasn’t been the case. Today, more than ever is being asked of the nited tates ilitary not only to rotect our freedom here at home but freedom around the world. It disheartens me that so many folks, especially in the younger generation, do not understand the true cost of freedom. They think it just happens. They have no idea how fragile our freedom is and the blood, sweat, and tears it requires to preserve it. Behind the blood, sweat, and tears are our true American Heroes who serve a grateful Nation not only on the battle eld but ith hu anitarian aid in every way possible.
As we are about a week out from Veterans Day, please take the time to say thank you for your service in whatever way you feel appropriate. Veterans are often very proud individuals who don’t want or expect a lot of fanfare or attention. Please respect this and read the room, or I should say, individual. Maybe buy a veteran a cu of coffee lunch or even dinner if you would. Respect and honor not only those who are family members but also those you know nothing about. It does my heart and soul good that many Vietnam veterans are now getting the appreciation and understanding they deserve. Many of the veteran appreciation events can be found within our pages ahead; please get out and about and help our veterans feel the love they deserve. I am proud again to be teaming up with the Insinger family and all the special people at Dolly’s Diner for our annual Veteran’s Appreciation Breakfast. A quick overview: on Wednesday, November 11th, from open to noon, all four Dolly’s Diner locations will be serving our veterans an All-American breakfast. Thank you to all at Dolly’s who make this happen, from everybody in the back of the restaurant to those who serve and greet. As it has continued to grow each

Veterans Day: Honoring Service and Sacrifice
E
ach November 11, our country pauses to honor the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States military. Veterans Day is a time to reflect, celebrate, and express gratitude for the brave individuals who have served and sacrificed to protect our freedom. Initially marking the armistice that ended World War I in 1918, this day has grown to recognize veterans of all eras and conflicts, from World War II to the present. Veterans Day is an opportunity for Americans to acknowledge and appreciate the invaluable contributions of those who have served. The origins of Veterans Day trace back to the end of World War I, famously known as “the war to end all wars.” At the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allied nations and Germany, effectively ending the conflict. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as “Armistice Day,” a day to honor veterans and promote peace. In 1954, following the devastation of World War II and the Korean War, Con-

Lycoming County Veterans Day Parade Set For November 7 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
T
heir ranks are thinning, and they might be a little rounder around the middle from the times in which their youths were “touched with fire,” but their patriotic ardor hasn’t faded, and they will be stepping off at the annual Lycoming County Veterans Day Parade this Saturday, November 7, in Hughesville at 2 p.m. or 1400 hours, military time. This parade brings veterans, families, organizations, businesses, and communities from throughout Lycoming County together for a day of remembrance, gratitude, and celebration. While the parade is hosted by a different municipality within Lycoming County each year, the Lycoming County Veterans Day Parade is a county-wide parade. The annual rotation allows communities throughout the county to have the opportunity to host and showcase this important celebration. This year, Hughesville Borough has the honor of serving as the host municipality, welcoming residents and participants from across Lycoming County. The 2026 parade will have some additional special significance as our nation
celebrates 250 years of American history this year. Parade entrants are encouraged to honor the men and women who have served our country while also highlighting the 250th birthday of the United States of America. The parade will provide an opportunity for communities across Lycoming County to come together to recognize the sacrifices and service of our veterans and celebrate the history, traditions, and communities that make up our county and our nation. Retired U. S. Navy Captain William Sherwood will be serving as the parade’s Grand Marshal. He served for more than 30 years in the Navy. He worked in the unglamorous but necessary role in logistics and supply during most of that time. He was responsible for everything from the bombs and ordnance that bombed Hanoi to the meals that Navy personnel ate. “I am enormously honored and grateful to have been named the parade’s Grand Marshall,” Sherwood told Webb Weekly. “Parades and occasions like this are a great way of instilling love of country for people, especially young people.” “I hope that everyone, particularly young people, never forget the sacrifices and dedication

Local Marine Corps Birthday Ball, November 6 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
“F

rom the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli,” the United States Marine Corps has always been in the forefront of the nation’s wars. To highlight and honor that heritage of service and patriotism, the Williamsport Detachment #388 Marine Corps League will hold its Annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball at Bald Birds Brewing Company, 220 Shaffer Lane, Jersey Shore, on Friday, November 6, from 5 to 10 p.m. This year’s milestone event marks the 251st birthday of the United States Marine Corps and offers a historic opportunity to recognize and commemorate the 250th birthday of the United States. The historic birthday of the United States Marine Corps traces back to November 10, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution establishing two battalions of Continental Marines. That historic event unfolded at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. Samuel Nicholas, the newly commissioned First Commandant of the Continental Marines, partnered with tavern proprietor Robert Mullan — who served as the primary recruiter—to enlist the very first Marines. Lured by cold beer and the call to serve a nation in its infancy, men gathered
at Tun Tavern to answer the country’s first call to arms. Because this historic birthday occurred nearly eight months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Corps was born prior to the founding of the nation itself. The Ball will feature dynamic guest speakers, live entertainment, catered dining, and time-honored Marine Corps traditions: – Guest Speaker: Retired Master Sgt., USMC, Robert Mosley. – Featured Entertainment: Guest singers Kopper and Kash, featuring former Tiadaghton Queen, Ava Musser. – Ceremonial Customs: The formal reading of General John A. Lejeune’s 1921 Birthday Message and the ceremonial cake-cutting, where the first pieces of cake are served to the guest of honor and the oldest and youngest Marines present to pass tradition across generations. – Semiquincentennial Tribute: Special recognition celebrating America’s 250th anniversary year. “This is a momentous year as we gather to celebrate 251 years of Marine Corps tradition — a story that began at Tun Tavern on November 10, 1775 — alongside our nation’s historic 250th anniversary,” said a representative for Detachment #388. “We invite our members, local veterans, military families, and community supporters to join us for an unforgettable evening.”

Push your chair in when you get up. Your mom probably told you this when you were five. If someone sends you a thoughtful message, don’t just respond with “OK” or a thumbs-up. Come on, give them a little more than that. Don’t take the last slice of pizza without asking. There might be somebody who’s been eyeing that slice for the last 20 minutes. If you sneeze, cover your mouth and nose. Nobody signed up to be in the boogie zone. If somebody invites you over for dinner, don’t show up three hours early. They’re probably still cleaning the house and arguing about what needs to be done before you arrive. Don’t give unsolicited coaching advice to someone at the gym. Unless they’re about to hurt themselves, let them do their workout. Not everybody needs a personal trainer. Don’t spend 10 minutes looking for your golf ball when you’ve already hit three into the woods. Pal, that ball is gone. Take the drop and keep it moving.
Don’t send someone a text that just says “Call me.” Now I’m wondering what I did wrong for the next three hours. If someone says they’re leaving a party, let them leave. Don’t start a 20-minute conversation when they’re halfway out the door. We’ve all been held hostage by the never-ending goodbye. Now, I’m sure I’m guilty of a few of these myself. And I’m sure some of you reading this have a few more you would love to add to the list. But my point isn’t to call anybody out. It’s to remind us that sometimes making the world a better place doesn’t require some huge act of kindness. Sometimes it’s as simple as being considerate of the people around you. A few extra seconds of your time, a little patience, or a small gesture can make somebody else’s day easier. And if we all made a little more effort to do that, I think we’d be a whole lot better off. “No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.” ~ 5.1 Corinthians 10:24

ing from depression. The AAC notes persistent sadness, hopelessness, fatigue, and social withdrawal are some symptoms of depression. Some veterans experiencing depression also may experience a loss of motivation that can affect their ability to function each day and take care of themselves. Depression can affect veterans at work and adversely affect their quality of life. Substance dependency: Committee findings found that more than 5 percent of OEF/OIF/ OND veterans had alcohol dependency while nearly 3 percent had drug dependency. Veterans with substance use disorders may grow to rely on drugs or alcohol to cope with trauma resulting from their service. Others may look to drugs or alcohol to alleviate chronic pain or stress related to their service. Substance use disorders can exacerbate existing mental health issues, and veterans also may engage in risky behaviors while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Psychological distress: The committee found that 13 percent of OEF/OIF/OND veterans experienced psychological distress. Such distress can make veterans feel like they are in crisis, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness, emotional numbness or isolation. According to the AAC, when experiencing severe distress, some veterans may entertain thoughts of self-harm. In such instances, veterans may require emergency mental health support. Veterans bravely serve their countries, and it’s imperative that people support efforts to ensure these brave men and women get the help many may need after returning from combat.

eterans have served their countries in various capacities. All military personnel work to preserve the freedoms of their fellow citizens, and some risk their lives in combat to do so. But the fight for combat veterans does not always end when they return home, and it’s important that everyone recognize that and support efforts to ensure veterans get the help they need after serving. A 2013 study published in the journal Psychiatric Services found that 43 percent of veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan had probable post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression or alcohol misuse. Those are just some of the issues combat veterans may confront upon returning home. Recognition of those conditions and how to spot them may increase the chances veterans get the help they deserve and need. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): The Committee to Evaluate VA Mental Health Services found that 23 percent of veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation New Dawn (OND) experienced PTSD. PTSD is different for each person, but American Addiction Centers notes that some common symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional distress, or avoidance behaviors. Veterans with PTSD may experience difficulty sleeping, relationship troubles, struggles related to work, and challenges regulating their emotions. Depression: More than 16 percent of OEF/ OIF/OND veterans were found to be suffer-

ture and somewhat misshapen. I try to situate them somewhere near a window, so I can watch them melt in the spring. I say, you’re never too old to build a snowman. It’s a project worthy of anyone’s time. On that note, I’m also especially fond of feeling the warmth of the sun in mid-January, and I only recently learned there’s a term for it — apricity. It gives one hope in the dead of winter that spring will eventually arrive, along with its warmth. Never mind the biting cold air during those endless months. Besides, there’s so ething truly e hilarating about lling one’s lungs with it — especially on a crisp, blue-sky day, surrounded by snow and its blinding white light. Those are some of the best days to soak in what inter has to offer in y o inion. No matter the season, I am always captivated by the moon, in all its various hases but a es ecially trans ed by a full moon on the rise — massive and gloriously yellow. Even in the wee hours if I happen to awaken and notice the room bathed in moonlight, I feel compelled to go to a window and gaze at its striking beauty. In fact, I’ve been known to text people GO LOOK AT
THE MOON, even if they don’t share my unbridled enthusiasm for it. Just ask my kids. urther ore nd it virtually i ossible to pass a white pine tree without reaching out to feel the incredibly soft needles or breathe in the sweet, citrusy scent. Likewise, I can’t resist touching my favorite tiny pinecone on the hemlock in our backyard every time I pass near it. Yes, I have a favorite pinecone. And it has beco e a ritual to nd it hiding within the branches and gently boop it as if it were a dog’s nose. Likewise, if a red-tailed hawk circles above e or a oc of anada geese happens to pass overhead, honking emphatically, I have to stop whatever I’m doing, crane my neck and watch. Naturally, I must point out such things to anyone nearby as well. It’s a rule. The older I get, the less embarrassed I am about my quirks, especially the ones related to nature. Instead, I try to embrace them, throughout every season under the sun. Welcome to my world. It’s where I live (listening for Canada geese). Visit me there at www. melindawentzel.com. The movie also looks terri c hich is not surprising, as it comes from director Anton Corbijn, who despite a slew of music-videos is perhaps best known for those evocative black-and-white U2 album-covers (The Joshua Tree, The Unforgettable Fire — and many more). Sadly, I was all alone in the theater that day; folks were no doubt preferring the well-reviewed Wildwood and the red-hot You Can See Everything. So Talent will likely leave theaters soon, and you’ll have to wait for streaming. ean hile you could try the rst i ley book — or even Highsmith’s equally gripping 1950 debut, Strangers on a Train. Yet the movie never tries too hard. As a thriller, it’s kinda old-school — content to carefully craft its characters, plus a brooding, dread-soaked ambience, rather than staying 18 steps ahead of us, or unspooling nonstop surprises. The ending — which is not so much a surprise as it is, well, an ending — really ties everything together; it leaves you thinking hard about the story, wondering which of the two antagonists contributed more to the outcome. he l s chief erits include its t o leads, with Mirren equal parts creepy, mysterious, chipper and hateful. As for Ehrenreich: I’ve had my eye on him ever since he scored as a likable cowboy-star in the Coen brothers’ dandy Hail, Caesar!; and this is another career triumph.

Garnering from Garner: Vocab Courtesy of Grumpy’s By Joseph W. Smith III

ast week, our headline in this space was “Happy About Grumpy” — and I suppose for folks who aren’t dopey or sleepy, that might conjure up Snow White’s seven pals. But there’s nothing dwarfish about our inspiration: a terrific used-book store in Liverpool, PA. Nearly all of my readers have seen Grumpy’s Books — a large and well-
marked yellow building on the right as you head down the Susquehanna toward Harrisburg on Route 15. It’s about 70 minutes from Williamsport, and well worth the trip. On a recent visit, after waiting while an Amish or Mennonite family carted off more than $300 worth of books, I came away with four great picks — including Bryan Garner’s Dictionary of Modern American Usage, published in 1998. I know that doesn’t exactly sound like awesome leisure reading; but it’s meat and

potatoes for us here at “Weird Words,” where we major in the kind of nuts-andbolts issues Garner handles: grammar, spelling, pronunciation and of course, the proper use of oft-confused words like flaunt and flout. As it happens, Garner also covers a slew of oddball vocab; so in honor of my favorite PA place for used books, here are some from this latest acquisition: Chitterlings (CHIT-linz, noun) – Pig intestines — especially when cooked as food. If you check the pronunciation, you’ll see this is the formal spelling of what’s better known as chitlins. As food, it often involves the casing rather than the contents; but in the words of Wikipedia, even that process “necessitates rigorous washing” — as you can well imagine. Corrigendum (kawr-uh-JEN-dum, noun) – An error to be corrected — like the somewhat better-known erratum (plural: errata). Corrigendum is related, as you may have guessed, to correct and right, containing pieces of both words. In fact, a huge set of English words uses the Latin base rig. Meaning “straight, right, to rule,” it can also be spelled reg or rec(t) — generating such terms as rigid, rectangle, rectify, rigorous, regimen, erect, regulate, regent and of course incorrigible. Defalcate (duh-FAL-kate [second syllable like pal], verb) – An archaic and now rare term meaning “deduct” or “curtail” (Merriam-Webster); but Garner focuses on

its narrow and still-common legal sense: to embezzle or misappropriate funds. Can be a noun referring to the mishandled sum itself. Garner also includes peculate, which means the same thing. Eristic (i-RISS-tik, adj.) – “Given to or characterized by disputatious, often specious argument” (American Heritage). Specious, for the record, means lacking merit, or merely superficial in appeal. Since this definition didn’t really do it for me — and because other sources don’t give quite the same meaning — I googled sample sentences for the word and got this: “His eristic approach to team meetings always turned simple project updates into heated, unproductive arguments.” Oppugn (uh-PYOON, verb) – To question the validity or truth of something; to attack, criticize or dispute. Similar to impugn, with both words containing yet another Latin base: pug(n), meaning “fist, fight” — as in pugnacious, pugilist and even repugnant. Whilom (WHY-lum, adj. and adv.) – Synonym for former — or formerly. As you may have guessed, it is related to while — as in erstwhile, which means the same thing. Whilom is now considered archaic, and you will likely encounter it only in older writings … … like books you’d find at Grumpy’s! Check their hours before planning a visit — and stop by here again next week for more weird words from Garner.

he thousands who saw Williamsport’s Armistice Day Parade Tuesday evening probably didn’t notice the resemblance of six of the participants in different divisions of the line, but it was learned today that marchers included a grandmother, her sons and two grandsons. The six were Mrs. Frank Lyons of the War Mothers, her sons, William, a driver for the Montoursville Fire Department, Roy and John with the DuBoistown Veterans of Foreign Wars drill team and her two grandsons, Robert with Montoursville High School Band and Richard, a Webster School pupil marching with the Boy Scouts.
Still another point of interest being discussed after the parade is the question, “What are retreads? A contingent of Retreads, representing the local unit of the organization took part in the Armistice observance. Walter T. Livingston, of this city, who is commander of the state department, explained that a Retread is a citizen who served honorably in both World Wars. The idea for the organization he says, was conceived by veterans of the First World War when they were landed on North African soil in 1942. Nationally, the Retreads claim more than 44,000 members. The largest unit in Pennsylvania is at Wilkes-Barre where there are 213. Williamsport has 24 active retreads.

I conclude the conversation this way: “You believe it’s true that there is no truth. Interesting. How do you know that’s true?” Obfuscators aren’t the only ones who can ask questions. Re-formation is a vital level of discipleship. It is an emerging disciple’s opportunity to question what they’ve been taught in light of new knowledge and experience. Doing so reveals truth and sets them free to experience that rst- erson she inah-glory-relationship with their heavenly Father. If they choose the truth of the gospel, the narrow road that leads to life (see Matthew 7:13-14), they will advance to the next level of discipleship: trans-
formation. If they reject the truth, the wide road that leads to death, they will remain in bondage. This is why Jesus declared in John 8: If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free... very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. My friend, it is good to question. Re-formation is important, just don’t make it a lifestyle. Determine to arrive at truth, accept it, and act on it. Doing so will set you free. Never stop short of freedom!

knowledge of the truth. Some emerging adults make learning or questioning a lifestyle. Why? Because endlessly questioning everything means they never have to act on anything. Truth demands action. It is often inconvenient and requires responsibility and sacrice. hat s hy eo le avoid it. Staying at the re-formation level allows the reluctant to perpetually argue and debate to avoid dealing with truth. When someone gives them a reasonable answer to their question, they change the angle of the question, or the premise of the debate, just to keep it going. They become masters at obfuscation. ebster de nes obfuscation as To throw into shadow; to darken; to make obscure; to hide; to make more difficult to understand; to confuse. I wasted too much energy in my early ministry years arguing with obfuscators. n ti e gured out their strategy: ask endless questions to avoid dealing with truth. The truth will require them to act: to accept it or reject it. That’s exactly what they don’t want, so they just keep asking questions under the guise of seeking truth. When I encounter an obfuscator, I stop the debate and ask this question, “If I can prove truth to you, beyond a reasonable doubt, will you be willing to accept it?” A true obfuscator will answer, “There is no such thing as truth.”

Why is re-formation necessary? It is required for one reason: God doesn’t have grandchildren. He always presents his relationship with us as Father and child. It is first-person. Each generation must freely receive God’s grace for themselves. No one else can do that for them. This is vitally important in the church. Too often, a rising generation is living off the residual glory experienced by previous generations. When that happens, a church slowly begins to die. Every generation must experience God’s shekinah glory, His power and presence, for themselves. This is why every rising generation of believers must have a visionary purpose. Proverbs 29:18 declares, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (NKJV) The key word in re-formation is question. As emerging adults experience an expanding and changing world, everything they were formed and conformed to believe is put to the test. The questioning is important because it is the only way they will arrive at re-formed conclusions and be blessed with a rst- erson relationshi ith their heavenly Father. For the emerging adult disciple, there is a trap at the re-formation level. The trap is described succinctly by Paul in II Timothy 3:7, Always learning, but never able to come to a

he Lycoming County Commissioners met on October 22nd to approve rate increases that will hit residents’ and businesses’ wallets, retire a long-serving county official, and secure state funding for probation and parole services. Starting January 1st, 2027, trash and recycling rates will increase. The commissioners approved a $5 per ton increase across the board. Municipal Solid Waste and demo-
lition will rise to $60 per ton. Transfer station disposal will rise to $90 per ton. Single stream recycling will rise to $60 per ton. Both residential customers who self-haul and commercial haulers will feel the increase. The rate hike comes because the landfill failed to turn an operational profit in 2025. The site only broke even because of state-mandated bank interest funds. Without that interest, the landfill would have lost between $1 million and $2 million. Heavy machinery operations rely entirely on vehicles, and rising fuel costs and global prices
forced the adjustment. The county has also brought in external experts in solid waste management to address the facility’s structural issues. The commissioners officially approved the retirement of Register and Recorder David A. Huffman, effective February 1st. His departure ends a long tenure in county leadership that recently included a high-profile legal dispute with the commissioners over plans to relocate his office to the Third Street Plaza. Huffman’s formal retirement letter cited personal health reasons and noted several upcoming surgeries. He did not explicitly mention the office-space dispute. The commissioners did not issue a broad public statement after the vote. Because the Register and Recorder is an elected county position, the Governor typically nominates a candidate to fill a midterm vacancy, which the state Senate then confirms, or the position remains empty until the next election cycle. Huffman’s departure may put the active litigation regarding the office relocation on hold. The county successfully secured $180,281.88 from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. This state grant fully funds the salaries of local adult probation and parole officers, so public safety oversight continues without adding an extra burden to the county’s local tax budget. Officers funded by this renewal grant oversee general county caseloads and specialized treatment courts, including the local Drug and DUI Court, Mental Health Court, Veterans Treatment Court, electronic monitoring programs, and community service
coordination. The commissioners approved $2,479,742.24 in recent invoices to keep county services running. Funding sources include the general fund at 66.38 percent, Act 13 funds at 31 percent, and American Rescue Plan Act dollars at 3.5 percent. The commissioners also approved an agreement for operations under the Domestic Relations department and secondary amendments to drop off recycling agreements with nearby partner municipalities outside the county. The October 22nd meeting reflected how county government manages financial pressure alongside administrative changes. Trash rates go up because the landfill cannot sustain itself otherwise. A long-serving official retires for health reasons, creating a succession question the state will ultimately resolve. State grant money flows in to keep probation services staffed. Williamsport Churches Unite to Pack Meals for Children Facing Hunger
T
wo Williamsport churches are inviting the community to turn compassion into action this holiday season by helping pack more than 100,000 meals for children facing hunger worldwide. City Church and City Alliance Church will host the Feed My Starving Children Meals of Hope MobilePack on December 4-5, 2026, at City Church, 36 East Fourth Street in downtown Williamsport. Organizers are seeking volunteers, donors, sponsors, schools, businesses, churches,
civic groups, and families from across Lycoming County and neighboring communities. The event builds on last year’s MobilePack, when volunteers packed 82,000 meals despite a short planning window. With more time to prepare and broader community support, this year’s goal is to exceed 100,000 meals while raising $30,000 to cover ingredients and production. Each meal costs approximately 29 cents. A $10 donation provides about 34 meals, while about $106 provides one

That purpose became especially obvious when participants heard about Wayne Andrei, a child in the Philippines who weighed just 22 pounds at age nine because of severe malnourishment and could neither walk nor talk. After his family began receiving FMSC meals, he gained 12 pounds in ten weeks. At age ten he al ed for the rst ti e and reliable access to nutritious meals continued to support his progress. For Newell, the story showed how a small act performed in Williamsport can become part of a life-changing story across the world. Young people from both churches are already contributing. During Vacation Bible School, City Alliance Church challenged children to support other children worldwide and raised more than $1,000 for the MobilePack. City Church’s children’s ministry, City Kidz, is continuing the effort through its hange for hange initiative, inviting children and families to collect coins throughout November. Because a meal costs less than 30 cents, spare change can quickly add up. The projects also give families a practical way to talk with children about generosity, compassion, and service. Local businesses, schools, organizations, and individuals are also encouraged to sponsor the event. Lycoming College has oined as the rst s onsor at the hild Sponsor level. Additional sponsors may contribute at available recognition levels or give any amount. Employers can organize workplace fundraisers, match employee gifts, or register teams to vol-

meal a day for a child for a year. Organizers emphasize that every contribution, whether a handful of coins or a major sponsorship, moves the project closer to its goal. Feed My Starving Children is a Christian non ro t founded in Dave 1987 to combat childBellomo hood hunger through nutritious meal production and global partnerships. During MobilePack events, local volunteers work in asse bly lines to easure ingredients ll and seal bags, assemble boxes, and prepare meals for shipment. The meals are distributed through established humanitarian partners to children in need. No previous experience is required, however, as staff rovide instructions and guide participants through each role. “We’re so excited to partner with City Alliance Church again this year,” said ber e ell ity hurch o ce administrator and event co-host. “Our hope is to pack more than 100,000 meals for children around the world,” Newell said. Work such as scooping ingredients, labeling bags, or packing boxes might appear simple, but each task connects volunteers with children and families in need. At last year’s event, volunteers prayed over completed pallets, recognizing that every box represented real people and the possibility of a healthier future.

or baseball fans, the World Series is the highlight of their favorite pastime. Football fans anxiously watch their teams work their way toward the layoffs and the big day for football fans – the Super Bowl. For those whose greatest sporting challenge is hunting mature whitetail bucks, the wait is almost over. The time is rapidly approaching when the rut is in full swing! Charles Alsheimer is recognized as one of the greatest authorities on whitetail deer, their habits and their habitat. For almost 20 years his passion has been studying the timing of the rut and making predictions on his ndings. is redictions are based in large part on the cyclical changes in the illumination of the Earth’s sun and moon that initiate and synchronize active breeding among whitetail deer. The timing begins with the occurrence of the autumn equinox (the fall day in which there is 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness – usually on or about September 23 each year . he rst full oon after the autumn equinox is referred to as the “Pre-Rut Moon.” The second full moon after the autumn equinox is called the “Rutting Moon’ and this year it is much later than most years in general, occurring on November 24th. Accordingly, the majority of the rutting activ-
ity would be later than we have witnessed in the past couple of years. You might also be thinking that here in Pennsylvania, our early archery deer season ends on November 20th! Does that mean that we will not be able to take advantage of the rut this year? No. Fortunately, even though most rutting activity is forecast for the third and fourth week in November, there are numerous peaks and valleys of rutting behavior that occur off and on over late ctober through mid-November. Further, the good news is that observations by many archers throughout Lycoming County and adjoining counties have been revealing an increase in rutting activity, with sightings of scrapes, rubs, and bucks acting “rutty.” Those hunters who have been spending time in the woods over the last week have been enjoying this increase in deer movement and rut behavior, and those who s end the nal fe days of this archery season should have a really good opportunity to see deer movement all day long – from daybreak right through to the last minutes of legal shooting hours. Many of these bowhunters reveal that grunt calls and occasional rattling have been increasingly effective as the season continues. As these last few days of the season unfold, both of these techniques will continue to produce increased sightings of rutting bucks. Charles Alsheimer adds that the major

goes on to share that the closest full moon does have an in uence on dayti e activity. After putting all of these theories into the mix, it appears that there is validity in all of the different oints that are ade. ut the bottom line is that we have until November 20th to maximize our time in the woods, and, after all, that is where the deer are! Whether you have scheduled your vacation days so that you can hunt over the next few weeks, or can only manage to slip out for a day here and there, the greater amount of time you can be in the woods over the next fe ee s ill directly affect your chances of success. So, pack a big lunch, get into the woods well before daylight, and plan to stay put until dark. Then, maybe, just aybe your efforts ill be re arded by the approach of a rutting buck! Good Luck!

“seeking” behavior usually picks up around November 7th and continues until November 14th. Thus, the upcoming days of our archery season will be prime time for whitetail buck encounters. Bill Winke of Midwest Whitetails.com tends to agree with this, saying that he feels the calendar is the most accurate rut predictor. As the season unfolds, the rut is triggered by photoperiod – the amount of sunlight (number of hours) in each day, and that pretty much occurs at the same time every year. He always likes to hunt during the week that starts 10 days before the peak; thus, in this case, November 5-12 is his preference. Mark Drury, one of the well-known Drury brothers, believes that the rut occurs at the exact same time each and every fall, but

ulation. I personally, over my lifetime as a deer hunter, have only ever seen that condition on a couple of occasions. Even rarer, I suspect, is seeing an albino deer. In Pennsylvania, an albino deer may show up in 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 30,000 births. In a true albino, there is no color, only white, and the eyes are pink, lacking any color. By the way, another guy at the coffee shop passed around a photo of an 8-foot-tall, hairy creature known as “Bigfoot”. I haven’t seen any lately, but it would certainly make for a very rare sighting!

It was one of those things where one thing just led to another,” Amy said about their courtship. “That’s not true,” was Dean’s response. “She came up on a college recruiting visit, and we were at a party. She walked in and asked, ‘Who’s that guy right there?’ “That’s when she decided to come to Lock Haven,” Dean said laughingly. While they will be honored Sunday, the Lock Haven legacy has grown another branch, as daughter Lacey is a sophomore at the college majoring in nursing and playing basketball. “I never thought she would decide to go to Lock Haven,” Amy admitted. “She had told us she couldn’t go to Lock Haven because she could never live up to our legacy. Then when she started going on her college visits she e erienced the same reaction I had. It just felt right to her. e didn t ressure her and the nal decision was what she wanted. But it is really cool because we went there, and now our daughter is doing the same.”

There was no way I could go to school there. “After that, I visited a few smaller schools and Lock Haven just felt right for me. I did well at school, but it was a second thought. We did win. During my years there, we made nationals three times, and I take great pride in that.” “The men didn’t do anything compared to our women’s teams,” Amy countered. “We were the team that made it to the ivision nal si teen three years in a ro . e ade it to the nal eight and the team that beat us went on to win the

against Linville Hill. Davion then dropped 39 and played stellar defense against Pottsville Nativity in the Final Four. The Knights faced an outstanding Bishop Canevin squad in the State Final. They were tremendous. Several Division 1 players. They threw everything at him. Davion still scored 30 points. He was the best player on the floor. I love watching the old footage. He was special. Davion is in his third year of college. He came to San Diego after a great season at Ball State. The landscape has changed. Davion entertained several
offers after entering the portal. NIL is the king. Hill led the Cardinals in scoring and was second in both rebounds and assists. Davion averaged 14.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. Davion’s first year was at Northwest Florida State. He played 27 games. Hill averaged 14.9 points and 5.2 rebounds in 22.7 minutes per clip. I expect big things from him in 2026. I used to joke with Davion and call him “Hollywood.” It was out of respect. He was big time. You could tell he had it at an early age. I reached out a few days after. My parents were
in the nosebleeds, and they didn’t get a chance for a chest bump. Davion comes from good stock. His older brothers helped pave the way. David is the man, and Alize continues to do his thing. Hill is writing his own chapter. I look forward to reading his script. The circle of basketball runs deep. I loved seeing the photos from my parents. The last time they saw Davion play was in the 2022 State Championship. Yes. They flew in just for that game. My last. And they just watched our guy “Hollywood” get the start in West Hollywood, CA. Cheers.

er introductions. Goosebumps. I had the privilege of coaching Davion for three years at St. John Neumann. Hill was the man. He helped us win three straight district crowns. An ALLSTATER all four years. The school’s all-time leading scorer. I still marvel at Davion’s junior season. That was my final year. He scored 783 points. Davion was named the 2022 PIAA Class A Player of the Year. He was an animal in the playoffs. Davion averaged 29.2 points and 10.3 rebounds during our impressive run. It was incredible. He went for 31 and grabbed 19 boards
