Your May Vote Counts!

F

inally primary election time is upon us. No more ads, no more commercials, no more of those signs blocking the beauty of

spring. There are some “points of interest” for you the voter I’d like to make you aware of or provide a little reminder about. First and most important, your vote matters, it is your voice in what goes on from the local community all the way to the Oval Office. Please do not sit on your vote. Get out and be heard. I don’t care if you write in someone’s name or vote for the favorite. Think of your vote as the most special of virtual documents that every person that has served in the United States of America’s Armed Forces has signed, many in blood. Our younger generations need to learn and understand this. Many believe our freedom is infinite and have no concept of how it was earned, been defended for over two centuries and is kept safe every day by the men and women who don’t have their heads buried in their smart phone most of the day. Our freedom at home and abroad is more fragile than at any point in American history. Thank you to those who protect it every minute of every day. The following notes are not meant to endorse or discredit any candidate. The choice is up to you the voter. The information is factual or based on common sense.

Mayor Gabriel Campana has done an outstanding job for the city of Williamsport just take a look around. Yes, there are streets to fix, bad guys to catch and a budget to balance, there always will be. Mayor Gabe is a Christian family man who loves our City and works hard for the tax payer. Don’t expect anyone to be perfect, the only person that doesn’t make a mistake is the one that is not doing anything. Chief Greg Foresman is a veteran of our Military and City law-enforcement. He has been promoted by the past three mayors of Williamsport. Serving for the past eight years as Chief of the folks in blue. He truly cares about the people of our area. He has addressed many tough crime and departmental issues. Mr. Foresman is battle tested and most experienced in the issues of today. He is seeking election for the District Judge position that Mr. Carn has retired from. A vote for Jonathan Williamson is also a vote for him to be City Council President. With the departure of the current Council President after the mayoral election, the normal policy has been that the next in command is voted into the vacated office. This would not occur until the current term ends. Nicholas Grimes was not elected to the position of City Treasurer, he was appointed when Tom O’Connor vacated this position. He is the step son of Mr. Bill Hall and was appointed by Mr. Hall

and City Council. It is his first election campaign. He had troubling signature issues on his petition for office. Only 100 were required. County Commissioner Jeff Rauff also has not won an election. He was appointed to office when Representative Jim Jeff Wheeland headed Webb, Jr. to Harrisburg. Dozens of folks applied to finish Mr. Wheeland’s term of office. As I pen this article no list has been made public of who the potential candidates were. Myself as a voter would like to know. His short body of work since placed in office becomes more validated by his selection for said office by the list he ascended to the top of. Jim Dunn and Rick Mirabito get the democratic nods for County Commissioner. Both make it through to November as two Democrats are placed on the ballot. Mr. Dunn is an expert on infrastructure who is providing a column to the Webb Weekly to us all about the roads, bridges, drinking water and recreational areas of our great area. Mr. Mirabito is a battle tested public servant who provides balance and voice for our County. Tony Mussare is the only true incumbent to Office of Commissioner and he is up against a large field of Republican contenders; two make it to the November

ballot. Mr. Mussare has worked hand and hand with Mr. Larson, Mr. Wheeland and for a short time with Mr. Rauff. Republican County Commissioner candidates are Steve Schultz, Jack Person, Jack McKernan and John Bower. Along with Mr. Mussare and Mr. Rauff provide a solid field to choose from on the Republican side. DA Eric Linhardt is on the ballot but faces no real challenge, his service as District Attorney has been solid and workman like while facing some tough issues and decisions. He has done a fine job on many levels within our communities; including his efforts to educate about the evils of heroin. The District Judge position opened up by Jim Sortman’s retirement has two good men seeking election, William Solomon and Trent Peacock. Both have outstanding career records in law-enforcement it’s too bad they can’t share the position. A thank you for your years of service to the following, Mr. Ernie Larson, County Commissioner an all-around good guy I’ve known him most of my life. He lived just three doors down from my childhood house at the top of Kane Street. The Honorable District Judge Mr. James Sortman, he has served the people for 30 years. What a commitment to law and order. And the Honorable District Judge Mr. James Carn for his 18 years of bench work. May the three of you enjoy your much earned retirement. God Bless America.

MERGED CABLE FIRM BEGINS WORK

E

ngineering studies have begun by Citizens Cable Corporation to determine what duplicating facilities of Williamsport’s two former cable systems can be eliminated, it was announced by Joseph L. Lecce, president and operating executive of the newly merged firm. The consolidation of Williamsport Cable and Citizens Cable was completed Friday, Mr. Lecce said and both cables are being operated by Citizens. National General Corporation of California announced the sale of Williamsport Television Cable for $2.1 million to Citizens, of which Mr. Lecce and Milton J. Shapp of Philadelphia, are stockholders. Concerning fees under the new setup, Lecce said. “It is our intention to treat all subscribers fairly in the future, with no unusually high cable rates.” The Citizens Cable rate has been $3.75 a month since Mr. Lecce’s new firm began business after Williamsport Cable boosted its price from $3.50 to $4.50 in autumn of 1965. Later, however, Williamsport Cable reduced its monthly fee to $2. Mr. Lecce said the single operation will result in increasing quality of TV picture and a better service. Additional channels will be brought into the system when telecasts of unusual interest are offered, he said. Mentioning Baltimore and Washington channels as possibilities. Mr. Lecce has been in the community antenna business since 1952. Mr. Shapp founded a television antenna firm in 1948 and installed the Williamsport Jerrold Cable Company here in 1952. Grit Publishing Company is among the stockholders in the Citizens Cable Company.

Local Veterans Reflect On Their Service In the Armed Forces By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

his Saturday, May 16, marks the annual observance of Armed Forces Day. The celebration of this day came about when President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our servicemen for their service to our country. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. This day was first observed in 1950. We at Webb Weekly asked several local veterans what their service in the United States Armed Forces meant to them. Captain Edward Lyon, United States Navy, Retired, lives in the Nippenose Valley area, and he told Webb Weekly, “I enjoyed my entire service career. I just loved it. I had the opportunity to serve with and command a lot of great people. I served at some very interesting duty stations and saw some interesting places.” Lyon also had some interesting duty assignments. “I was commander of Seal Team 2. I served in London for two years and served as a naval attaché in Indonesia for four years,” Lyon said. “My family was very supportive of me and I think my service was a good experience for them as well. My service to my country means a great deal to me and I am very proud of it.” Howard Wilt served in the Marine Corps in Korea from, March 1951 to April 1952. “Being in our armed forces was a great experience for me. I grew up in a hurry. I spent my 21st birthday at Parris Island. It made a man out of me. My service to my country means a lot to me,” Wilt said. “Korea marked the first time that Communism was stopped in its tracks and I am very proud to have been a part of that. I think my experience has made me more

patriotic and able to appreciate more what is great about this country. Bill Ashton, is from the Cogan Station area and served in the United States Navy, from1963 to 1967 and later in the Naval Reserve. “I enjoyed my service in the Navy I probably would have made a career of it but I had a child that had a serious medical problem and they wouldn’t let me go home to see about it, so when my enlistment ran out I did not reenlist,” Ashton said. “I was in Vietnam on an LST (Landing Ship, Tank) running on the rivers there. It was during a time when things were not quite as dangerous on the rivers as they would later become. Even though I did not re-enlist, when I got home I joined the Naval Reserve and was in that for 24 years and got a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment from that.” Donald Cohick served in the United States Army and Army Reserve for 27 years and believes that his service made a great difference in his life. “I went into the service because I was not going to college and did not have a trade. I would spend the next 27 years in the Army and Army Reserves, Cohick said. “I think my service game me a greater sense of duty and a sense of service to my country.” He continued, “It helped to give me a career. When I got out I became a deputy sheriff here in Lycoming County and later became the head of the county’s Veterans Affairs Office. Being a veteran helped me understand the needs that veterans have and helped to do my job better. I’m very proud of my Army service and of my country. That service is a big part of who I am as a person. What I learned during it has served me for my whole life.” All of us as Webb Weekly would like to thank all of those who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces. We all appreciate your sacrifices to protect our great nation.

new effort to help local veterans transition back into civilian life received a major financial shot in the arm thanks to the members of the Harmonia Club, more formally known as Gesang Verein Harmonia. Paul Wenner an officer in the Harmonia Club explained how the donation came from the club. “As most people are aware recent changes in Small Games of Chance Laws require organizations to donate sixty percent of profits from gambling revenue to charitable organizations,” Wenner told Webb Weekly. “The Board of the Gesang Verein Harmonia

was approached by the Legion Riders of the American Legion Post 104 to see if they would be interested in donating to the Veterans Transition Center the Riders were spearheading for this area.” According to Wenner, This Center would be available to veterans in need of assistance ranging from temporary housing to help in paying some bills as well as helping veterans to transition back to normal life after being overseas. They invited the Legion Riders President Rob Dunkleberger to a board meeting where he presented his cause and answered some questions and concerns. After some debate among the Board members it was decided and voted on to

donate to the Center $10,000. With several of their members being veterans both young and old they felt that this was a just cause that could be beneficial possibly to some of their own veteran members. “Being a Veteran myself and the father of a veteran and a son of a veteran I applaud the Legion Riders and thank them for all their work in helping our veterans,” Wenner said. The Pennsylvania Garden

I received a Hanging Basket for Mother’s Day, Now What?

I

By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz f your one of the millions of mothers across the country that received a lush hanging basket filled with enchanting blooms for Mother’s Day, your first thoughts were probably “How pretty!” followed by “How do I not kill it... within a week!” Guess what, you and several million moms are probably thinking the same exact thing. So you have this glorious hanging basket Little Bobby and Sara Jane selected for Mother’s Day, now what? Being ever so optimistic, if you raised a child you should be able to keep a basket of petunias alive for the summer...hopefully. Hanging baskets can instantly add a vibrant splash of color to your front porch, a heavenly scent to a deck or a pit-stop for hungry hummingbirds. Are hanging basket they the most difficult plant to care for in the garden? Certainly not, however,

they do require regular attention and three basic things; proper watering, adequate fertilizing and as they say in the real estate business, the correct location, location, location. Forgoing one of these requirements will have a negative impact on your posies. The first step down the road to a healthy and happy baskets might sound silly, but properly identify what plants you received, this is a must for new gardeners with less than green thumbs. Next, take a few minutes to look online at the dos and don’ts of your plant are in the basket, followed by some online research, especially the type of lighting requirements the plant requires, if the hanging baskets needs shade, don’t assume a shade loving plant cant0 grow in full sun. It can’t and it wont. Watering a hanging basket, or any other container plant, you must make sure the plant has adequate water

only drink half a cup of water when you need more? Moving on...Fertilizing a hanging basket, or other container plant, it needs to be fertilized regularly to stay healthy, happy and produce more flowers. A general all-purpose fertilizer, 2020-20, will do the trick and make sure to follow the directions on the package. Remember, adding more fertilizer than as directed will not be good for the plant or make it produce larger blooms, too much fertilizer will actually be harmful for the plant. While Miracle-Grow is a good brand of fertilizer, Peter’s 20-2020 is much better. Peters is more a professional grade and contains an extra kick to help plants be their best. Peters, a robin-egg blue granule fertilizer can often be found in small plastic containers at local stores. mix well with water and it may be used on bedding plants, perennials, vegetable plants. As long as the fertilizer is the right type for the plant, it does not matter what brand it is, what matters is that is fertilized as the directions call for.

since it can’t draw water from the ground like plants that are planted in the ground or flowerbeds. Check the plant daily to see if it needs a drink, this is done by touching the soil in the basket, if it feels dry, the soil is pulling away from the sides of the pot or if the soil color has changed from a dark woody brown to a light shade of brown. Of course lifting the basket to see if it feels light or heavy will also help determine if its time to water...when watering a hanging basket, keep watering until water runs out of the drainage holes on the bottom of the pot. It seems each summer I love to recall a question someone asked me several years ago after purchasing wax begonia basket, a summer plant that loves the sun and can tolerate full-sun. The question was “This will get the sun all day, how much water does it need? A half a cup?” Keep in mind the hanging basket was large and it would receive full sun all day long. I thought to myself, how would you like to sit in full, hot sun all day and

The Real McCoy

M

other’s Day has passed, but isn’t it appropriate to be thankful for some attributes of not only my mother, but others who have made a difference day in and day out? Some notes/virtues to be cherished... • I appreciate mothers who are “real” and decide to age naturally and gracefully. This means no liposuction, no breast augmentation, no tummy tucks, no face lifts and no nose jobs. In other words, what you see is what

you get. The real deal. If you need a new hip or a knee replacement, that’s a normal wear and tear item. But Botox? Save the money for a trip with the grandchildren! • Along those same “lines,” the other day I noticed a woman in her late thirties or early forties but was dressed like a high school senior. High heels, skin tight jeans, tons of mascara, and flashy jewelry at all corners. There is a time and place for everything. I never felt embarrassed

the way my mother or grandmother presented themselves in public. By the way, how cool is it to have your peers want to “hit up” on your own mother if she comes across so Gerry Ayers provocative. • You’ve got to admire any woman who is comfortable living within their means and trying to save money when they can. My mother is proud to be a “coupon clipper” and boasts to me how much she saves on grocery bills each week. There is merit to being thrifty; it could even trickle down to their offspring. A penny saved is a penny earned. Most men don’t want to be bothered with coupons. Their loss, literally. • There is a saying that behind every good man is a good woman. That’s because they feed us, wash our clothes, and love us. At least the lucky ones in this world! • Mothers who lay down rules are appreciated later in life rather than early in life. We all ate dinner together at a set time. Exceptions

were made for sporting events or school activities. If not, you better be there. This wasn’t to showcase her cooking skills, but to keep the family lines of communication open. When the “airplanes” landed at 5:30 p.m., they were “grounded” for at least one hour before another “takeoff.” She and other mothers were our “flight controllers.” If there was any turbulence, any lost luggage, any malfunctions or attempted hijackings, it was to be brought to the table. If not, forever hold your peace! • Growing up, almost all the mothers I knew expected church attendance on Saturday night or Sunday morning. Ours was no exception. Whatever “soul cleansing” that couldn’t be done at home, was pawned off on the church. Nice try mom. Again, structure, even on the seventh day of the week! • Kudos to all mothers who made me feel at home while being at THEIR home. Whether it be a sleepover, a birthday party, an afternoon lunch, your snacks, lounge (family room) and cordial attitude went a long way in my growing up and appreciating

a library volunteer, or anything else in our community where they devote their time and energy. They have to balance work and life in a way that their grandmother probably didn’t. We are better because of it. • Let’s not forget that our mothers had to carry us around for nine months as a living, breathing mass in their tummy. We got heavy. As a man, I doubt I could do it. I hate even carrying a heavy back pack for a small period of time. But for almost a year? Granted, they had hips that were proportioned for it, but most men don’t take the time to think about that sacrifice. Hey mom, thanks for having me! For lugging me around even though I couldn’t see out! As I said, as far as mothers go, I appreciate what you would call the “real McCoy.” Pure, with no artificial ingredients to ruin the overall effect. Strong, caring, sincere, and with a deft touch when and where needed. This includes step mothers and mother in laws. I’ve never dealt with either of those last two mentioned. That may be to their favor.

“other mothers.” Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Leoh, Mrs. Hodgetts, Mrs. Ruggero, Mrs. Fahnestock, Mrs. Czap, Mrs. Sortman, Mrs. Donovan and all the others.....Thank you! Let’s face it, all mothers weren’t like that. Having boys and girls over and putting up with loud music, spilled sodas, raiding of kitchen cabinets, muddy shoes, and everything else at that age level is testament to their patience and kindness. • It’s important to remember mothers who are “survivors” of health issues, abuse or other traumatic life experiences such as divorce or loss of a child. Lots of moms lost their moms early in life. My mother is both a breast cancer survivor and heart attack survivor. She makes no excuses and carries on with a positive attitude and plenty of daily activities. Staring at a flower pot and feeling sorry for herself isn’t on her agenda! Same goes for many, many others out there! We use you as an inspiration! • Society has changed. A woman’s place isn’t just in the home anymore. Be thankful to that mother who also happens to be an EMT, a store clerk,

Weekly Wise Words...

By the Storytellers, By the Loyalty, By the Memory

I

nspiration can come from unexpected sources. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be listening to or reading the words of a WWE (formally known as WWF) champion. The Ultimate Warrior first entered my life in the fall of last year by way of a friend who is, by all accounts, an “ultimate” fan. He let me borrow a DVD collection of The Ultimate Warrior and encouraged me to watch it. Worried this article isn’t for you because you couldn’t care less about wrestling? Just trust me - keep reading. At first, the thought of watching hours upon hours of wrestling didn’t really make me want to pop the corn and settle in with a blanket on a Saturday night in front of the television. However, I saw the passion in which my friend talked about Warrior – that peaked my interest. So one night after a long day, I relented. I implanted the first installment into my DVD player and, thus, into my life. After a few preconceived notions that a

yawn-fest was going to ensue, I got schooled. I quickly realized that Warrior was not just some meathead who wrestles on TV for fame. This was a man with purpose. The man behind the body paint and neon speedos was James Brian Hellwig. He would go on to have one of the Paige most successful and treasured Smith careers in wrestling history. The character of The Ultimate Warrior was not the biggest (physically) nor the flashiest of the WWF/WWE moneymakers. But after seeing him in matches with other wrestlers of the time, I caught onto the fact that he had a certain something about himself that was electric. Passion cannot be a gimmick. It cannot be faked. Warrior had passion – the same passion that I saw my friend exude when he talked about Warrior. So, instantly, I made the connection. I took note of the fans in the audience. Once the music started playing and the character was about to run into the ring, the passion in the

WISE WORDS fans’ eyes was evident. This energy was contagious. After a successful (understatement) career and many wins later, he retired in 1998. He went on to become a public speaker. I’ve watched his presentations on YouTube. Following getting over the oddness of seeing Warrior in a suit and tie, I watched as James Brian Hellwig described the meaning behind The Ultimate Warrior. The majority of his talks were on self-discovery, commitment to yourself and your

purpose. The piece that inspired this article, however, was a speech he gave on Raw (a wrestling program) on April 7, 2014. This was only days after he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. In this monologue he spoke about becoming a legend, and how one becomes legendary. Some might only see the surface of this and think he is referring egotistically to his own career and the careers of the famous fighters who will follow him. I saw a deeper

meaning. An excerpt from the speech is as follows: “…if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them believe deeper in something larger than life then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized. By the storytellers, by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him and make the running the man did live forever.” Now, obviously, you can easily replace the words “man” with “woman” and “his” with “her.” I believe he was referring to all of mankind here – so let us not lose sight of the message by playing semantics. I can only talk about what this means to me. It could mean something completely different to you – all is up for interpretation. There is a wise lesson here: if you can make a difference, you will live on forever. You will live on within every person that your presence has changed. In turn, the people you changed will change the ones that follow them, and so on. It is an ongoing cycle that could trace back to one person. That person could be you. Just as easy as that person could be you, we all have people who are that to us. We all have people who have entered our life and changed us for the better. It could be a parent who believed

in you, a teacher who encouraged you, a friend who showed you compassion when you were vulnerable, someone who brought your heart back to life when you thought you’d never love again, or even a celebrity whom you will never personally meet. How wonderful is that? The thought that our spirit never really dies. It lives on within the stories people tell, the loyalty we have earned and the memories we have created. The Ultimate Warrior embodies so much more than mindless entertainment. He taught me that the way to truly make a difference in this world is to connect with people. To touch their hearts and their souls. To show them that loyalty, honor, commitment, and love are not dead. These qualities belong to the people who believe in the sanctity of them. As I said earlier, the speech, which inspired this article, was given on April 7, 2014. Ironically and tragically, The Ultimate Warrior (James Brian Hellwig) passed away the very next day of heart disease. He was 54 years old. Be careful what qualities you possess. Be mindful of how you treat people. These qualities and actions will become your legacy. Happy inspiring!

South Williamsport Spring Swing To be Held Saturday May 23 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

I

f you want to kick off the Memorial Day Weekend in a fun and exciting manner you may want to go to the Eighth Annual South Williamsport Spring Swing to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 23 at the South Williamsport Area High School campus. “The activities kick off at the SWAHS campus at 10 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. There should be a little something to pique the interest of all ages,” Dori Rankinen, one of the organizers of the event told Webb Weekly. “There will be food, games, small business vendors, and the big event will be the First Ever South Williamsport Cowpie Bingo! For those of you not familiar with a cowpie bingo, we will be dividing the football practice field into small squares. During the afternoon, two cows will be brought to the field. The object is for individuals to purchase a square that you think is lucky...and then we all wait to see where our first cow will deposit a “cowpie”. If it is in your square, the winning prize is $800!! You don’t need to be present to win. The main bingo will take place between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. with side wager attractions between the hours from noon until 3 p.m.”

She said some of the other interesting attractions will be a fire truck, an ambulance, horse drawn carriage rides, dunk tank, crafts, games, face painting, and children’s eye screenings by the Lions Club. “The Spring Swing came about as an idea to create an opportunity for neighborhood fellowship, outreach and a chance to work together to support community causes, Rankinen said. “We have many active organizations in South Williamsport that work tirelessly to create activities and events within its borders that appeal to all residents. Rather than having a multitude of fundraisers to support these activities, we thought... why not have a BIG fundraising event and share in the fun, as well as the profit! “ Some of the food vendors include South Williamsport Lions Club SWAHS Band Parent organization and the South Williamsport Mummer’s Parade Inc., just to name a few. Tickets for the Spring Swing are $25 each and can be purchased at these Southside businesses: JP Stone, Southside Dairy Queen, Kressly’s Paints and Wallpaper, Texture Plus or by calling Dori Rankinen at 570 772-2423.

The Art of Wearing a Baseball Cap By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz

F

rance has the beret, in Mexico it’s the sombrero and in Russia they say ushanka. Here is the USA our chapo of choice is the baseball cap and its fitting both literally and physically. The humble ball cap isn’t fancy like an English bowler or stylish like a blue porkpie hat, however, the baseball cap is American as the Liberty Bell, apple pie and an American flag...one

that’s made in America. So how did the bald man’s equivalent of a security blanket become woven into the fabric of America? It started in Brooklyn in the year 1860 when an obscure ball team, the Execelsiors, made history by becoming the first baseball team to wear a baseball cap instead of the typical, unpractical and unattractive stiff, full brim straw hat that seemed more fitting for a tea party at a women’s bridge club than a manly

JACK McKERNAN

game of baseball. Some teams bypassed straw hats and decided to go topless...on their head, an idea that wasn’t too bright while batting a small ball around in the bright sunshine. Few, very few people might have heard of the Excelsiors, but the baseball cap they ushered into the game became an iconic symbol and one that’s truly American. Although the Brooklyn based ball team’s caps were somewhat floppy with little support or structure, they were the foundation for all the caps to follow. Constructed from several materials including cotton, wool or leather with solid or mesh sides in a kaleidoscope of hues, the baseball cap can be as unique as the person wearing it. That brings us to the big questions: What’s the correct way to wear said baseball cap? This question is debatable, very debatable. While one may simply plop a cap on top of their noggin, it can become more complicated especially with the younger males of our species.

Is the cap worn with the bill facing forward, the most traditional way, backwards or to the left or right side of the head. Unless you are under the age of seven and dizzy from running around in circles, men should shy far away from this fashion faux pas. One could search from Maryland to Colorado, Detroit to Dallas, you won’t find an adult male wearing a sideways cap that looks very intelligent, this look doesn’t fly. Which brings us to the very last and most debatable style, wearing the cap backwards, with the bill jutting straight out or tilted at such a steep slope the end of the hats bill is almost touching their shoulders. Some male cap wears, specifically the college crowd, like the image this projects, one of hippest, an in-charge attitude and a slight whatever vibe. Although the cap was meant for baseball players, it has become part of American culture worn by presidents, golfers, government officials, folks having a bad hair day, the Average Joe to the bald man covering-up his chrome dome.

from birth to 21 years of age. Last year’s event attracted over 200 participants. Since its inception, almost $50,000 has been raised for the CDC through this event. “Since the affiliation between Hope Enterprises and the Children’s Development Center was finalized, both organizations have been working together to enhance the service options for children and their families in our area. Having the support of our community with events such as the Cutters 5K, allows us to be better prepared to meet the needs of those to be served” stated Hope Enterprises President, Jim Campbell. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in seven male and female age categories. In addition to the prize awards, the top male and female runners will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Williamsport Crosscutters game that evening. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female walkers.

“We are proud to partner with the CDC again on this event. It just keeps growing every year”, said Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi. Registration is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. All participants receive a race t-shirt (while supplies last), and a ticket to the June 27th Crosscutters vs. Batavia MuckDogs game at 7:05pm. Registration forms and more information are available online at crosscutters.com, at the Crosscutters offices at Susquehanna Bank Park or the CDC offices located at 625 W. Edwin St. Sponsorships of the event are also still available. Opening Night 2015, presented by Susquehanna Bank and KISS 102-7, is slated for Saturday, June 20 as the Crosscutters host the rival State College Spikes. Motivational Moments

I Jim knows Lycoming County. As a Lycoming County Planning Commissioner and Armstrong Township Supervisor for 11 years, Jim has a proven record of dedicated leadership. have decided to revamp my weekly articles. Fitness and nutrition tips can be found just about anywhere these days. Health awareness and ones motivation to make changes rarely surface after reading an article on basic hydration facts during warmer months. Instead, I would like to try a new approach – Let’s work from the inside out. Internal motivation is a very powerful tool when you unlock your mind to the possibilities of what your body can achieve. It all starts there anyway right? This will be a progressive process and a tool for your own personal growth and goal setting. First, begin by creating a list of three important areas in your life that you would like to improve. All using only one word for each division. Finally, how will you achieve this

self-development? Once you have completed this exercise attach what your “big picture goal” is. By addressing the three key areas you will naturally enter into the developmental phase of personal growth. Buffy My Example: Basile What: Relationships, Health, Growth Improve: Communication, Balance Knowledge How: Listen, Rest, Learn My “big picture” goal - Never having to wonder “what if?” Spend time looking deeper into the motivation that either drives a goal forward or holds one at bay. If your goal to lose weight is based off of losing more than a friend, you will fail. If your goal is to be able to run next to your child as he/she learns to ride a bike…you will succeed. Buffy is the Owner of Epic Fitness.

Now, in Muncy, PA, three doctors are helping local residents with Knee Pain live more active, pain-free lives. Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions?

• Arthritis • Knee pain

Living with knee pain can feel like a crippling experience. Let’s face it, your knees aren’t as young as you used to be, and playing with the kids or grandkids isn’t any easier either. Maybe your knee pain keeps you from walking short distances or playing golf like you used to.

Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your knee hurts and the pain just won’t go away! We are the Doctors at Twin Hills Chiropractic Health Center. Since we began practicing nearly twenty-two years ago, we’ve seen hundreds of people with knee problems leave the office pain free. If you’re suffering from these conditions, a new breakthrough in medical technology

Finally, An Option Other Than Drugs or Surgery

Laser Therapy is an outpatient, non-surgical therapeutic modality that has been shown to reduce inflammation that causes pain while accelerating the healing process. It offers noninvasive treatment to promote healing for those who suffer from pain in muscles, nerves and joints, like that associated with chronic knee pain. Laser Therapy is used by professional sports teams including the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Bengals.

It Promotes Rapid Healing Of The Injured Tissues

This pain-free, non-surgical approach works by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes, providing pain relief and reducing injury damage. This leading edge technology has an impressive success rate of returning patients to work, sports and competitive activities, as well as everyday life. Patients treated with the Laser Therapy often show a higher level of function, both during and after the treatment period. The therapeutic laser provides a tremendous alternative for those facing surgery.

Leaders in our Neighborhood A Fighting Leader By Larry Stout

Y

our local leadership writer has a three-week teaching assignment in Eastern Europe working with government and business leaders. Starting next week, I will be featuring some of these leaders to serve as a perspective for us in Lycoming County. In the past twenty years of international

training, the most unique leader I had the privilege of meeting was Vitali Klitschko, currently the mayor of the city of Kiev, Ukraine. Vitali and his younger brother Wladimir Klitschko are also two of the most popular and successful heavyweight boxing champions in the world. Vitali Klitschko, nicknamed Dr. Ironfist, had the highest knockout-tofight ratio of any highlight in boxing

history next to Rocky Marciano himself. Out of 47 fights, he only lost twice, both times due to unusual circumstances. Some boxing experts have considered Vitali Klitschko as perhaps the best pure heavyweight boxer in the past four decades. But he and his brother are not typical boxers. Both hold Ph.Ds and speak at least four languages. What Vitali really wanted to do was be a leader. He had more money than any man could spend, and he and his brother are absolute legends in Europe, so neither fortune or fame motivated him. No, Vitali wanted to give back to the people of Ukraine, and for that reason, he decided to take up politics. So it was that in November of 2008, while I was doing a leadership-training course in the city of Kiev, one of the attendees told me that his boss was interested in meeting me. I gathered it was someone important, but did not realize just how important till I was escorted by two bodyguards a popular restaurant in Kiev. The place was completely empty (which really made me begin to wonder about my mystery guest), and then Vitali Klitschko came through the door and introduced

himself. At this time in his career, Vitali had just ended a four-year retirement. He thought he was through with boxing, and tried to take up his political interests, but the ring drove him back and he fought a title fight against the WBC Champion Samuel Peter in Berlin just a couple of weeks before. It took eight rounds to defeat the champion in what fight experts called a “dismantling.” I congratulated Klitchsko on his victory and he told me he was finally done with fighting and wanted to seriously pursue his political career. Our meeting was called to see

if I might serve as his leadership coach. Obviously, this was a huge opportunity, but I did not immediately accept. Instead, we talked for over an hour about his hopes and desires for the future, and particularly how he wanted to help his home country of Ukraine. I was very impressed that this man could retire and live for the rest of his life on some tropical island, but instead, he had a heart that was burning to serve. Believe it or not, I told Vitali that he was not ready for me, because I felt that deep down, he was not ready to give up boxing. I told him that he would know when it would be time to quit, because it would be his body telling him and not his mind. I also told him that the beauty of political life is that it is never too late to jump in — when you are really ready to give it your all. We decided to keep in touch, and he did continue to box and do so quite successfully. He was even named WBC Fighter of the Year for 2011. It would not be until December of 2013, at age 43, one of the oldest boxing

champions ever, that Vitali Klitschko would finally call it quits for good. Vitali had been defeated for the office of mayor of Kiev, the capital and largest city in the Ukraine, back in 2008. That political setback might have been one of the reasons why he came out of his retirement and sought out an American leadership coach. But this time he did not need my help. With boxing fully behind him, he easily won the mayoral race and assumed office in June of 2014. He has been on the forefront of the developments with Russia, and that country realizes that this is one political force that will not take to intimidation! Serious leadership takes serious commitment. Those in politics enter for pride, power or personal altruism. Vitali Klitschko is a great example of the third type, and the Ukraine is fortunate to have such a leader at such a time as this. This is the first in a series of leaders in Eastern Europe based on Larry’s current trip to the Republic of Latvia.

hen T. Mitchell Bird walks across the Community Arts Center’s stage on May 16 and receives a bachelor’s degree, he will turn the page toward a new life and end one of the longest, unique chapters in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s history. Mitchell will become the last of five siblings to earn a degree from the college. Since 1995, at least one “Bird brother” has been enrolled at the institution. Counting Mitchell’s pending graduation, the five brothers, all Dean’s List students, have earned eight degrees. “Some people will say they can’t afford Penn College. I say, ‘You cannot afford not to go to Penn College,’” says matriarch Janice Bird, 69. “You get a good job in your field after you graduate. All our boys are doing well. They received an education to obtain not only a beginning position, but they all moved up. I’m 100-percent Penn College.” Oldest son Ross W. Bird (1999 associate degree in electronics technology and a 2001 bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering technology) is president of Williamsportbased QorTek, a military and aerospace research company. Jennings W. Bird (2000 associate degree in welding technology and a 2004 bachelor’s degree in welding and fabrication engineering technology) is production manager and a welding engineer at Valmet, a global fabrication service and technology

GRADUATION better,” Seth said. Jim and Janice Bird moved their young family to Canton from Massachusetts in 1980 to escape the high cost of living in the Bay State. A Williamsport native, Jim graduated in 1962 from Williamsport High School, which was housed in what is now the Klump Academic Center on Penn College’s main campus. Jim relied on his carpentry skills to operate a home restoration business in Canton until his death in 2013. During most of that time, Janice concentrated on homeschooling the boys. “They had ‘x’ amount to do every day, and only when it was done, and done correctly, could they leave,” Janice said. “They became very good at realizing how to learn and how to fix things that were wrong, because they weren’t free until they got it done. There was no yellow school bus coming to save them!” That tough-love approach to education paid off. Rather than shying from challenges, the Bird sons embraced them. They grew to love problem-solving; the more difficult, the better. “We were shown how to do things from a very young age,” said Ross, who has six electronics-related patents in his name. “Being motivated wasn’t optional. I think all my brothers and I have the work ethic of the last generation, because we hung around our parents rather than young people.” During that time, they engaged in myriad hands-on activities, whether helping their father with his restoration business or completing a practical school assignment devised and delivered by their mother.

“In one word, she was focused,” said Jennings. “She always showed us how each area of study related to life and our places in the upcoming workforce.” The family’s love of hands-on learning and the manageable commute from their 19th-century brick home in Canton made Penn College the natural choice when Ross became the first of the Birds to pursue postsecondary education. “I liked the fact that there were three hours of lab time per course, per week. That’s how I learn best,” said Ross, who Janice dubs the “family guinea pig.” Like his brothers who would follow, Ross learned well. His internship at QorTek led to a full-time job as an electronics engineer. Ten years later, he became president of the company. Today, 10 of his 15 engineers are Penn College graduates. Ross’ experience at the college and postcommencement success made it a foregone conclusion that his brothers would pick the same school. “I have known since a young age that I would be the last brother to graduate from Penn College,” Mitchell said. “Since I was 14, I knew exactly what degree I wanted to come here for.” “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” Ross said. “The education I received was fantastic. There was no reason for them to go anywhere else.” That included Janice. Inspired by her sons,

DEALING WITH DEATH AWAY FROM HOME The shock of having a loved one die unexpectedly is only compounded by having death occur away from home. Suddenly, not only does a surviving family member have to confront the emotions that accompany the death of a family member, but there is also the seemingly insurmountable logistical task of bringing the body back home. In these cases, it’s best to leave matters in the hands of the local funeral director. Not only do we have experience in addressing all the details associated with transferring the body, but we are also part of a capable network that ensures an expeditious execution of all related matters. When death occurs away from home, the first call should be to the funeral home. Should you have a loved one who dies when they are away, contact KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME immediately at 323-7717. We will make all appropriate arrangements to bring your loved one home as soon as possible. We are here for you when you need us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have been our community with compassion since 1879. Our tastefully appointed facility is conveniently located at 1914 Memorial Avenue. hether it’s a just a vibrant pop of pretty petals you want added to the front of the home or a raised bed full of delicious fruits and vegetables, the return of warmer weather has many homeowners reaching for their gardening gloves. If you’re ready to try out your green thumb or dust off the gardening skills you long ago acquired, there are plenty of ways to achieve the lush vegetation you desire. Check out these tips and tricks for cultivating a thriving and productive garden of any variety. Start with a plan. Different flowers and plants require different sun, soil and water needs. Keep these factors in mind and consult the seed packets to plan out where each should be placed. Many apps are available to take the guesswork out of gardening, helping you create a perfectly organized plant or flower bed. Some even offer reminders for watering, fertilizing and more.

Keep water in mind. Make sure your plan includes a close proximity from plant bed to the water supply. Be smart with soil. Whether it’s a flower or vegetable garden bed or containers, the secret’s in the soil, where roots develop and sustain life. Invest in the proper tools to keep this foundation strong, such as Professional Soil Modifier from Profile Products, which improves water and nutrient retention, keeping vital elements in the root zone longer. Plant close to home. If you have room, try to grow your plants as close to the home as possible. This makes watering less of a task, and also makes it easier to get to your precious vegetables when

labels. Simply use a permanent marker to mark each plant name on stones in front of each plant row. Be a green gardener. Always opt for eco-friendly, pesticide-free products to use in your garden, when possible. Products filled with chemicals can be harmful to animals when carried through the air with wind. So, dust off that shovel, tighten up the hose and get to growing. Once you have the right plan in mind, you’ll be on your way to achieving the flower or fruit and vegetable garden of your dreams. it’s time to harvest. Opt for a permanent solution. There’s no doubt that gardens require seasonal upkeep, but you can find some ways to ease the tasks. One such solution is Professional Soil Modifier from Profile Products, which permanently improves the root zone by adding air- and waterholding capacity in all types of soil (unlike peat that needs to be tilled into gardens each year.) The result is better drainage when it’s wet, better waterholding capacity when it’s dry, deeper root growth and healthier plants. Label away. The Baer Facts...

The Head of the Class-Lonnie Gamble

O

n April 29, 2015 CAPPA had its first CAPPA Fundraiser. Lonnie Gamble, Executive Director with the assistance of Carolyn E. Perry, Executive Assistant and Eileen Harley, Academic Enrichment Program Coordinator founded the Community Alliance for Progressive Positive Action (CAPPA) in 2001. The following is an example of what hard work, determination and love for your community can accomplish. Lonnie reached out to Russell Thomkins, Jr., Lead Singer of The New Stylistics and invited them to perform at the Community Arts Center along with Eddie Holman. Close to 1,000 people attended the event that night to hear the fantastic sounds from the Stylistics, Eddie Holman and Pitch Perfect Band. They came out to hear songs that produced 7 Gold Albums, 5 Gold Singles, 2 Double Gold Singles, 8 Platinum Albums, 1 Double Platinum and 4 Platinum Singles along with a Grammy nomination in 1994 for “You

Make Me Feel Brand New”. The diversity of the audience was amazing. It really gave Lonnie pause to see the number of people who helped make that evening a very special one for his organization. The Pitch Perfect Band warmed up the crowd prior Leroy to Eddie Holman taking the Baer stage. Known for his popular hit single, “Hey There Lonely Girl”, Eddie made it evident, very quickly, that he hasn’t lost a beat. For 50 years, Eddie has proven to be one of the most famous falsetto voices ever heard. What a great performance by Eddie Holman and the Pitch Perfect Band. A brief intermission followed and then the New Stylistics took the stage. All I can say is WOW! I had the privilege to see them in person back in 1972 when I was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. They performed at the Hampton Coliseum at that time. Over 30 years later and they haven’t lost anything, including a full head of hair (Russell). Their performance

in the Criminal Justice Department; Rachel J. Hickoff-Cresko, Assistant Professor of Education and Lycoming College Teacher Education Department for making true collaboration possible (working together for the benefit of the whole). CAPPA provides a state of the art technology center for youth from all primary schools in the City of Williamsport. The CAPPA Neighborhood Network Technology Center provides technology based learning instruction after school hours. CAPPA also provides full day summer academic enrichment, performing arts and recreation programming. Here’s the main reason CAPPA exist: Studies have shown that the afterschool hours can be dangerous ones for children. The Department of Justice reports that 29 percent of all juvenile offenses occur on school days between 2pm and 8pm and that number of violent crimes committed doubles in the hour immediately after school is let out. Thanks again Lonnie Gamble and CAPPA for a great contributor to the community. You can contact CAPPA at cappa@ comcast.net or (570) 326-7700.

was flawless. Lonnie also showed his skills/expertise on guitar when introduced by the group. CAPPA’s mission is to help students build on their capabilities, increase their feelings of self-worth, decrease self-destructive behavior and assist them in making proper life changing decisions. It was organizations like the old Bethune Douglas Community Center, located on Park Avenue back in the day, that influence new and upcoming groups such as CAPPA. The premise of CAPPA is that schools and communities must work together to provide safe environments where children can continue to motivate themselves to achieve their fullest potential. K-sixth grade boys and girls are molded by a total of more than 60 teachers, staff and volunteers. Carolyn E. Perry, Elisa Entler, Sydney Figard, Kristin Jones, Condoah Dobbs and William Harley are core members of the instructors and volunteers. As mentioned above, there are many, many more who contribute their time and energy to make this organization a success. The staff at CAPPA gives a very special thanks to Lycoming College and Amy M. usquehanna Health Cancer Center If someone you care about has cancer or another potentially life-threatening diagnosis, you may struggle with what to do. Amid feelings of sadness, disappointment and even anger, there’s also a desire to say and do the right things to bring comfort and hope to your loved one. As the patient’s main support person, your most important role is to be an advocate. Listen and learn what physical, medical and emotional needs your loved one has and may have during treatment and consider the resources available to help you meet them. Your best resource is your loved one’s medical team. Listen carefully to what they tell you and take notes if it helps you keep track of details. Ask questions, and if you want to do your own research, request recommendations for sources of reliable information. Be wary of

Internet research. The information on some websites can be inaccurate, and because none of the information is tailored to your loved one’s case, what you find may create unnecessary concern and anxiety. A calendar with large blocks of space can help you keep track of appointments and treatments. Keep medication lists, insurance cards, emergency contacts and “do not resuscitate” orders accessible. Know that it is common for cancer patients to worry that they may die. If they have children, they will be concerned about missing important milestones in their lives. If they are working, they may be concerned about losing their job and their income and how that might impact the family. Be available to listen and help find resources and brainstorm solutions. You may not be comfortable talking to your loved one about your feelings and concerns, but it is important to find an outlet. Your pastor or a social worker are good resources with experience in helping caregivers

can. If you are not the main caregiver, offering your help with many of the above items can be a great support. Cards and prayers are always welcome. Be sure to call before stopping at a patient’s home to visit and, if you offer to do something, absolutely follow through! Most patients want things to remain “normal” and that is not always possible. However, if you have children at home try to stay with the normal routine to provide consistency and stability. Last, the person you are caring for doesn’t always want to discuss their condition or answer “how are you doing?” questions. Listen attentively to what the patient discusses and asks, pay attention to non-verbal signals like nods, smiles, frowns and sighs, and follow their lead. While not everyone can be a successful primary caregiver, even the slightest contributions to addressing the patient’s needs can be comforting and make a big difference. June K. cope with their numerous challenges and concerns. Many people are reluctant to ask for help, but the support of friends, neighbors, co-workers and your church to provide meals, transportation and assistance with light housekeeping can help you handle the added responsibilities of caregiving. If you are using outside agencies for help, read carefully which services are covered by insurance, available on a sliding scale fee basis or need to be paid for out-of-pocket. Not everyone is physically and emotionally equipped to be a caregiver. It is better to acknowledge your strengths and ask for support to shore up your weaknesses than to become completely overwhelmed. Family, friends and neighbors “need to feel needed,” and you can fill that need by assigning them tasks. Your health is incredibly important, so take care of yourself! Stay hydrated and rested to the best of your ability. Eat healthfully, take deep breaths and focus on addressing one task at a time and moving forward one hour at a time. Find humor wherever you

he kids were unbelievably disappointed. There isn’t much you could do, though, when a longanticipated event gets rained out. You can rant and shake your fist at the sky but you know that’s energy wasted. The best you can do is rent a movie, reschedule your event – and read “Rain: A Natural and Cultural History” by Cynthia Barnett. Eons ago, just after Earth became more than a bit of debris flung off in the birth of the sun, water vapor got trapped in our planet’s atmosphere. Eventually, Earth’s surface cooled enough that that moisture poured down and it rained for years. That’s a good thing: without it, there would be no life here. Early civilizations came and went with the rains. Humans moved from forest to savannah and picked up hoes, tamed livestock, and built boats. They

created gods to explain where rain comes from and who ruled lightning, and just about every culture passed down a cataclysmic flood story. Centuries ago, people learned to harness and save water, yet they could do little but dance or pray for rain to fall in times of draught. In the early 1400s, King Sejong the Great of Korea understood how to measure what fell. In the late 1500s, witches were blamed for dry spells; barometers were invented a hundred years later, and a fad for weather-watching captivated America and Europe. By 1802, clouds were named by a man whose father thought weather prediction was folly; later that century, rainmakers were paid fortunes to make clouds form over dry fields. Today, even though we have modern methods of predicting rain and there are thousands of local precipitation reporters around the world, meteorologists sometimes still miss storms and showers. Even if we could tell where it was going to come down (or not), there are things about rain we tend to overlook. Doodlers get raindrop shapes all wrong, for instance. We ignore that rain has changed elections, societies,

And we may not know that the rain falling on our faces today may have wet the faces of our most ancient ancestors. Maybe because it’s as refreshing as its title, or maybe because it reminded me of spring, but “Rain: A Natural and Cultural History” made me very happy. That stuff that falls from the sky isn’t strictly what this book is all about, though. Author Cynthia Barnett also

a morning gobbler hunt. Under the light of the stars and a ¾ moon, we cleared out a spot at the base of a large cedar tree and nestled in for the duration. As the sky began to brighten to the east, several gobblers sounded off from their roost across the creek below. Then, behind us, a gobbler responded to the soft tree call of a box call. We smiled; as this is just what we had hoped would happen. For the next hour, we called off and on to the gobbler, and each time he would gobble in return. By now, however, we would hear hens that were also with him, and we hoped they would all come our way. It was 7:15 when the first hen appeared off our left shoulder. She was 40 yards away as she slowly crossed the meadow, and she was followed by 15 more hens. Then, HE showed up, trailing his harem. He was a nice mature Tom, and as it passed just 35 yards away, John’s shot rang out! Startled, the gobbler began to run, and John shot again! All of the hens scattered, ran a short distance and then began feeding and walking slowly again. The Tom stopped, looked around and then began walking at a fast pace. He did not appear to be harmed at all. Later, it was discovered that the sight on John’s shotgun had been

t was John Mello’s goal on this trip to obtain the Rio Grande and Merriam’s turkeys toward his “Grand Slam” of gobblers. After a rather unexpected bit of good luck at a ranch in San Saba County, Texas, John had shot a very nice Rio Grande gobbler – now it was westward bound for the Merriam’s. From central Texas, it was a 13-hour drive until we reached our destination in southwestern Colorado. We stayed overnight in Pagosa Springs and would meet in the early morning hours with our outfitter/guide, Ash Tully. He would be taking us on a 900-acre ranch south of town, nestled in the mountains at 7,000 feet that had a decent population of Merriam’s turkeys and where he had been seeing several nice longbeards. Ponderosa pines, cedar and oak trees covered the hillsides and the valley floor was an irrigated pasture for horses and cattle. A nice stream lined with willow brush meandered through the bottomland, and it was prime fly-fishing for trout. The three of us climbed the hillside and hiked the quarter mile to a meadow where we would make our first setup for
