From the Publisher…

Where’s the Chief?

I

t was early morning a couple of Saturdays ago. As I headed down Market Street and crossed through confusion corner a large empty space was evident at the west entrance to Brandon Park. Chief Knockahomer was gone, not there, as in left the reservation. The 24-foot wood sculpture whose proper name is Chief Woapalanne had become a fixture at this site since 1990. My affectionate nickname, and you know how I love nicknames, for the giant Chief, Knockahomer, as in out of one of Brandon Park’s three fields, Little League, softball and one full size diamond with a very reachable short fence. I coached Little League at Brandon for years and would always refer to Pete “Wolf” Toth’s giant wooden sculpture by that name to the young ball players. As they grew up they would learn about his true identity as Chief Woapalanne. They also learned Coach Webb might have been fibbing a little that the Chief was the first maker of wooden baseball bats in the Susquehanna Valley and the Cleveland Indians were named in his

honor. I watched the Chief come to life as Mr. Toth meticulously carved him. He became the greeter and a landmark for Brandon Park as time passed. Yes, I like to joke around but when I observed the open void where he had stood for 25 years it was like a little part of all those Summers spent at Brandon was taken away from me. I know how much he has meant to the community and how many pictures have been taken of the Chief and with the Chief by folks visiting our area. What a great piece of art, history and conversation piece the Chief has become to Williamsport. Well, it didn’t take me long to find out what happened to the wooden Indian giant. As I reached the office that Saturday morning and read the Sun Gazette, Mark Maroney explained it all to me. Mark does a great job of covering the City and also keeping track of old Indian Chiefs. Chief Woapalanne didn’t fall in battle nor was he stolen by a rival Indian gang or should I say tribe, he had bugs. Termites to be exact and they really

have taken a toll on him. The Chamber of Commerce, Brandon Park Commission and City of Williamsport had him taken down due to the safety concerns for the public. They Jim didn’t want the old Webb, Jr. Indian Chief to launch one last surprise attack. This was the only decision that could be made based upon the damage to his base and inside bottom where he was supported. There will be much more on Chief Woapalanne in next week’s issue. How about the start our Williamsport Crosscutters got off to? Ten straight wins to open the season and no their good fortune has not been created by swinging bats made from Chief Knockahomer. Great pitching, timely hitting and hustle have Billtown’s boys of Summer off to the best start in franchise history. If you win they will come has always been my philosophy on how to put fans in the seats. Great crowds have been turning out at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field. Master of

Say a Prayer for Cruz In last week’s Webb Weekly there was a story (Cooper Family Benefit) about a courageous seven-year-old, Cruz Cooper, who is battling a rare form of leukemia. I have known Cruz’s grandfather Kelly for years, our relationship bonded around the baseball diamond; he has been a good friend of the Webb family. As I have talked with Kelly and kept track of Cruz’s condition it has been truly heart wrenching to hear what Chad and Gina, Cruz’s parents, and the family have gone through and fought through together. Unfathomable. There has been one constant, Cruz that All-American little boy that should be taking batting practice with his Dad and

Grandfather instead of fighting for his life, has continued to smile, love and live with courage and bravery. He has been an inspiration to all around him. His love of his baby sister and family is amazing. From my conversations with Cruz’s Pappy I have learned much about what a family goes through during a child’s battle against a deadly disease. Things many of us don’t think about or want to think about. Like percentage rates of survival, side effects, being away from home for weeks at a time and financial burdens which is the least of a families worries when dealing with a situation like this. To update you on Cruz – he has completed three rounds of chemo and was to be undergoing a bone marrow transplant as I was penning this article. The outlook for recovery is cautiously optimistic. If you would like to help, there will be a fundraiser to defray some of the expenses the Cooper family has incurred. It will be held Saturday, July 11 at the Hughesville Fireman’s Social Hall from 2:00-4:00 p.m. For information about

the event check out last week’s article or Cruz Cooper Benefit Hughesville, PA on Facebook. You may also email Sally Brown at sabrown61@comcast.net for information. If you cannot make the event and want to help you may send a check or donation to Webb Weekly, 280 Kane Street, Suite 2, South Williamsport, PA 17702 made payable to the Cruz Cooper Benefit Fund. I will make sure it gets to the family. God Bless America.

Here’s What Our Patients Say...

ANKLE PAIN

I came in with a mild ankle sprain. I had pain with walking, running and standing. My mom and I had been told about the laser treatment and that works wonders. After my first treatment, I couldn’t believe how much of the swelling went down as well. I now am finished with all my treatments and my ankle feels wonderful. It healed quicker than what it would have if I had just tried icing it myself. I’m glad that I came to Twin Hills Chiropractic Health Center and got the laser treatment done to my ankle. ~Abigaile F.

BACK AND LEG PAIN

I had lower back problems resulting in extreme leg pains. I was treated with laser and heat therapy (no pills or shots) and after four treatments, I noticed an improvement in my lower back and legs. At the end of my treatments, I feel great and have no problems. I highly recommend Twin Hills Health Center to everyone. ~Gene S.

NON SURGICAL PAIN RELIEF

NECK AND BACK PAIN

It’s been about three years since I actually slept more than 2 hours a night. With heat and laser treatment to my neck and back, I don’t have pain anymore. I can sleep, sit, walk the mall, and more without any discomfort. I was so amazed that the relief was so complete thanks to the heat laser treatment. ~Christy D. I’m getting the treatment with the laser and it is not painful at all, it actually feels really good and then I get to see the doctor for a treatment and this is the best I have felt in a long time. ~Martha F.

ANKLE PAIN

I came into Twin Hills Chiropractic Health Center the middle of last month with a swollen ankle and pain. That is when I started laser treatment. As of today, all the pain is gone and there is only a little swelling remaining. ~Doris P.

fter almost 50 years of service the Memorial Park Swimming Pool in the City of Williamsport has undergone what can be regarded as a transformative makeover that cost more than $1 million. City officials are hopeful that this new recreational facility proves to be a huge success. “Since 2012 we have been in talks about creating a new pool. I am glad to say it has finally happened,” Justin Simpson, Director of Recreation for the City of Williamsport, told Webb Weekly. “We have a new home in Williamsport for years to come and we hope to create this pool as tourist attraction for people outside the area to come to. This project would not have happened without the support of the Administration,

City Council, Community Support, First Community Foundation Partnership of PA, DCNR and several others.” He said the project started last fall and it was very exciting to see the old Memorial Pool and bathhouse transform into such an awesome place. There is now a zero depth entry into the pool (like going to the beach and walking into the ocean). There is a tot area that has a small slide for little children and old salty (both water features) and bubblers. The next area that was created was the intermediate area. This area has two water features a raindrop that kids can stand under and trio of fun (three different features built into one and each one does different things). Next is the 20-foot high water slide. This slide has become a hot spot for kids but you must be 48 inches tall to travel down the slide. Islands break up each area

with benches for people to sit on. “This pool reminds me of a mini water park and I am so happy to be a part of this project,” Simpson said. “Our Streets and Parks Department has spent hours transforming the bathhouse and filter house. We added new lighting around the outside and inside of both building. There is a fresh coat of paint to the inside and outside of each building that has added a new look.” He said there is a new seating area located next to the bathhouse that has become hit for people to hang out and relax. This area has five tables and 20 chairs and five umbrellas. They have also added new black fence to replace the old chain link fence. Williamsport Mayor, Gabe Campana is also excited about the pool. “We are excited to provide, another safe, quality of life activity for families. Our children deserve such a facility like the Splash Cove.”

f Jesus is the only way to God, what about the man in Africa who has never heard about Jesus? This argument has been used against Christianity for centuries, but it no longer holds water. Africa is now sending missionaries to America! Raphael Mnkandhla is the new pastor of Citychurch in Williamsport. Raphael Mnkandhla was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in September of 1983. Zimbabwe is a landlocked country located in southern Africa. Claimed by Cecil Rhodes’ British South African Company in the 1890s, it became known as Rhodesia. One of the advantages of being a British colony for nearly a hundred years was to inherit one the one of the best educational systems in Africa. Zimbabwe had the highest literacy rate on the continent. It was a product of this system that the young man

Raphael Mnkandhla benefited. Unfortunately, he was also born to a country that was war-torn after its independence in 1980 and ravaged by AIDS. His father was in the army and taken prisoner by the opposition for years while Raphael was growing up. His mother, the most important person in his life, contracted AIDS in the 1990s and eventually died in the year 2000. His older sister, who worked for years to keep the family together, also died of AIDS in 2005. The pain of these losses was devastating to this young African man. He became rebellious against authority and thought seriously about suicide. He believed he had nothing to live for. But the influence of his mother was still with him even when she was gone. She had taken Raphael to church as a young man, and now he began talking to God in prayer, looking for answers. Finally, at age 17, a cousin shared

DEATH OF A FAITHFUL COMPANION Children are often first confronted with the death of a beloved member of the family when a pet dies. While their parents’ first instinct may be to shelter them from this harsh fact of life, a pet’s death may serve as an invaluable learning experience that helps children understand their feelings as well as express them. Youngsters are almost surely going to want to know the meaning of death. Because very young children may not perceive death as permanent, parents may want to allow their cultural and spiritual beliefs to guide them when providing reassuring answers about their pet’s well-being. The death of a pet usually provides children with a blueprint for dealing with future losses. When a loved one dies, it can be difficult to know how to help children cope with the loss, particularly as you work through your own grief. How much children understand about death depends largely on their age, life experiences, and personality. It’s important to create an atmosphere of comfort and openness, and send the message that there’s no one right or wrong way to feel. For more information about the services we offer, please call KNIGHTCONFER FUNERAL HOME at 323-7717. We are here for you when you need us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. with Raphael the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and from that moment on, his life changed. Raphael felt like God had reached out in the desert and gave him a cold cup of water. But he also realized that there were more people stuck in the desert and it was then that the call of God became clear. How could he deny others of God’s goodness when he tasted it himself? After graduating high school by passing his British-level exams with honors, Raphael got involved

in an organization called Scripture Union, conducting AIDS awareness programs in high schools all around Zimbabwe. Soon after he joined Youth With a Mission, and worked in the neighboring countries of Mozambique and Botswana. But these early experiences showed Raphael that he needed further Christian education, and there was only one option for him. Both pastors of his church were missionaries, one from England and the other from the

USA, and both had studied at Christ for the Nations Bible School in Dallas, Texas. Through some divine providence, Raphael was able to get a student visa to the USA and start his studies at Christ for the Nations in January of 2008. Though Raphael was there for the education, he could not help but find the love of his life in a beautiful young lady from the Williamsport area named Heidi Neff, who he eventually married. After completing his studies at Christ for the Nations, he was hungry for more in depth education, so he enrolled in Southwestern Assembly of God University. The challenge was exactly what he needed, as he graduated as valedictorian with a Bachelor’s degree in Church Ministries. Still not satisfied, Raphel went on to receive a Master’s degree from Criswell College, also in Dallas. While studying, Raphael and Heidi served as youth pastors for a large church in the Dallas area. He gained valuable experience, and together with his academic background, he was highly recruited from all over the United States. So why did

LYCOMING COUNTY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SERVICES

Raphael and Heidi choose to come to Williamsport? Obviously Heidi’s roots in the areas had some bearing, but this was actually a minor factor. What drew Raphael was Williamsport itself — a city with tremendous potential but also one with a great challenge. He also noted the diversity he found at the church and that they shared his desire to give a cup of cold water in the desert of hopelessness. His impact has been immediate, as Citychurch has already doubled in size since his arrival in January. He has also made himself a presence throughout the city. Maybe what American churches need are more missionaries from Africa!

ust a mixture of random thoughts this week. In other words, cannon fodder for reader reaction. Let’s get to it! > The final plans have been laid for the beltway loop to go around (avoid) the highly congested Selingsgrove strip. This is always the worst part of my, and probably yours as well, vehicle travel when taking Route 15. Bumper to bumper, stoplight after stoplight will finally be a thing of the past in that area! Praise be to PennDot! It should make things not only safer, but faster and more efficient. Join me at the ribbon cutting. Should be done within the next decade, if things go as planned. But you know how that goes. > How do retailers and our government expect Americans to keep forking out money on hard goods and travel when it’s just not there? Let me get this straight. Property and school taxes go up each year. Food and fuel costs continually rise. Sewage and water rates take a climb. Education costs go through the roof. Yet earnings and wages stay stagnant. So something has to give. Or should I say, another thing has to be given up. Indispensable income is now a thing of the past for the middle class these days. It’s not even lent, so what

have YOU gone without lately that you used to enjoy? > I received an e-mail from Karen Kline, the former Lycoming College disc jockey that wowed the airwaves in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. She was happy I remembered her and the music she played, and that I shared those memories Gerry with my readers. She told me Ayers she’s in the mid west now, has done librarian work, and that her boyfriend is encouraging her to give disc jockey duty another shot. Keep rocking Karen! > Faith in the world department: At the Carlisle General Motors show on June 26th, one of the visitors with me lost her wallet full of cash. We reported it to security and all vendors that we stopped at with no success. However, within a few minutes I heard an announcement over the loudspeaker that a wallet was found and to report to the yellow seminar tent. A fellow journalist, Jerry Heasley. had found it lying in the grass! After the girl described it to him, it was back in her hands pronto! She also gave Jerry a big hug, and we were back on our way. Thanks Jerry for your help! I honestly thought in this day and age she’d never recover it! > For those wondering how the stroke

ago. Some still found the trash heap, while other yearbooks were given new life. > This summer season has featured more thunderstorms and down pours than I can remember. Maybe I am dreaming. And I’m not sure if the weather service keeps statistics on sudden, localized torrents. But my lawn doesn’t lie, and when it gets sudden bursts of sun, and then rain, it grows at a rapid rate I can’t keep up with. > We are into July already and steam rolling into August. Take it from me, if there is a trip or activity you’ve been putting off (maybe because of those stagnant wages or lack of time) for one reason or another, there’s no time like the present. Life becomes a blur of sorts for many of us and we forget to hit the “pause” button. Take time out for yourself, because no one is going to do it for you! > Pull the children away from the electronic media and television and get them outside. Parks are made to be used. Bikes are made to be ridden. Get the dust off the jump ropes and tennis rackets. Take them fishing. If parents are active, children tend to follow. Be a good example! > As Webb Weekly expands and experiments with new writers and features, I look at it as a box of Whitman’s Sampler. Bite into your favorites and enjoy them, but don’t be afraid to chew on something new. Either way, it’s a low cal treat. And you don’t even have to wait for the holidays to open it up and dig in.

recovery is going, I can say at this point (six months out) that it seems slow but sure. You measure things in small increments, not in tidal waves, of personal success on a day to day basis. More strength, a tad more flexibility. The tingling has gone away in my fingers. Better balance. I still get frustrated when the knee and ankle get fatigued or feel weak. You hope for “breakthrough” days but realize the body has to do it when it’s ready to do it. And anybody who has had a stroke must remember rehab and recovery beats the other alternative; taking a dirt nap. > A huge thanks to my brother who gave up his father’s day at home with the wife and kids to take his vehicle and a trailer to retrieve a 31 year old Ford Mustang convertible in the backwoods (that means middle of nowhere) of West Virginia for me. The 15 hour round trip went without a hitch (well, we DID use a hitch on his van to get the job done) and he was excited as I was to get the non restored, original machine back home. If it was anyone else they might have said...”I’m staying home, go find someone else to help you.” > Congratulations to Porsche on finishing 1-2 at the famed 24 hours of Le Mans endurance race in France. Finally, the dominance of Audi has been broken! It was an exciting race to follow. Perhaps one day I can witness the race live! > Many people have commented on reviewing their old yearbooks since I wrote a column about it several weeks

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

How to Make Affordable Jewelry Feel Luxurious

I

love jewelry! Necklaces and rings in particular are my personal weakness. There’s nothing like an interesting piece to really make an outfit pop! Unfortunately, I don’t have the type of budget to buy the higher end pieces I see in magazines etc. However, there are a few things I keep an eye out for when shopping for reasonably priced baubles in the hopes of having them appear to be more lavish then their actual price tag. However, I fully admit that I do highly

enjoy browsing the accessories section in “cheaper” stores, especially for seasonal trends. Trends in themselves are fleeting and usually I stick to my overall personal style, but every once in a while I’ll test drive a trendy piece of jewelry that may only be good for a few wears before it starts to fall apart. This is also a great way to have fun with novelty accessories in general like furry headbands and tassel bracelets. But, please be aware that the more cutesy/twee novelty jewelry is the more so it’s meant for a younger

Kids in the Kitchen

demographic. For those of us refined ladies looking to stay within a certain price point here are a few tips to keep at hand when shopping for your jewelry wardrobe. First off, look for slightly darker metals over bright shiny ones. Bernadette Flashy golds and silvers Ulsamer are a dead giveaway that a piece is on the cheap side. Plus, they show wear and tear more readily. Darker options like bronze and pewter look more sophisticated, and feel more rustic and antique after a few dings and scratches. Also, choose metals that won’t turn your skin green, which should already be a no-brainer. Which metals, are those you may wonder? Pieces made from gold vermeil or silver plated are usually safe and won’t leave a tinge on your skin. Avoid copper, nickel, and gold-plated jewelry, which can leave those dreaded sickly-green marks! When in the market for statement pieces those with plastic gemstones are best left on the jewelry rack. The neon variety in particular can verge on the tacky side, and come across a bit juvenile. Clear crystals have a more lux feel and will give you a bit of glitz without being vulgar. In fact, anything overly flashy should be avoided, especially with bigger stand-out necklaces. A blinged-out bib

necklace seems like a quick way to amp up a simple outfit, but it has the potential to come across as shoddy. Instead of a bib try a choker, sculpture-inspired piece, or something more unique with a vintage, or ethnic feel. Also, steer clear of pieces that feel flimsy and lightweight. Now, you may think you’re the only one who will “know” that necklace is on the rickety-side, but trust, visually it’s not hard to sport and insubstantial piece masquerading as something with more impact. Jewelry with a bit of heft goes a longer way towards that luxe feel than their feeble counterparts. Once you know what characteristics you’re looking for, where can you find these illusively pieces? For online shoppers check out sites for Bauble Bar, chloe + isabel, and of course Etsy, which should be your go-to for a wide variety of unique pieces with an array of price points. For you brick n’ mortar gals chain stores like Target(especially with their designer collaboration collections), Kohl’s, and Macy’s have affordable selections. And, for your bargain hunters, keep an eye out for sales a fine jewelry stores, granted even their sale price and run a bit high, but quality at a discount the investment is worth it. In terms of what kinds of pieces to add to your jewelry collection this season, look for delicate options as opposed to big and bold. A simple chain, a few rings, and studs earrings and your good to go this summer.

80th Annual Camp Meeting At Stabler’s Grove July 26 to August 2 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

F

ervent evangelism and camp meetings have long been part of the religious and faith community scene in Lycoming County for many years. One of the oldest and enduring of these gatherings is the Camp Meeting at Stabler’s Grove. This year will mark the 80th of this gathering when it is held Sunday, July 26 through Sunday, August 2. The featured Evangelist will be Rev. Steve Housewright, who is a Texas native, graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary and Texas Christian University. He is experienced as a parish, children and youth pastor, Christian camp director and teacher. The title for his messages this week is “Something Wicked This Way Come.” The following are the message themes for each evening and the presenter of special music: • 26th – Is Revival Still Possible, “Can These Bones Live?” – Winnie Schweikart • 27th – A Revival of God’s Words, “Little Read Words” – Amy Peck Kosolapov • 28th – A Revival of Prayer and Fasting, “The War Room” – Clyde Myers Family • 29th – A Revival of the Holy Ghost,

“Supernatural Seizure – Ron Kelly • 30th A Revival of Holy Living, “Disconnected but Not Unplugges” – Pat & Harlan Bower • 31st – A Revival of Gospel Preaching, “The One Thing Missing” – Bobbi Grieco & Dave Ward • 1st – A Revival of Love ,“Let Me Carry That – Joe Tokay • 2nd – A Revival of the Church, “You Are On A Mission From God” – Ken Paulhamis – Barbershop Quartet Each evening a gift will be given to a person that meets the chosen category for that evening. Childrens’ night will be on Monday and Saturday will be youth night. A hot dog roast will be held following the service on Saturday. The history of the Camp Meeting begins on February 15, 1936, the District #11 executive board, during their regular monthly meeting, received a favorable report from the Evangelism Superintendent, that the questionnaires sent to the twelve churches of the district replied favorably to sponsor a camp meeting in the summer. The original churches were: Anthony Baptist Church, Friedens Evangelical Church, Mt. Pleasant Evangelical Church, Bethany Evangelical Church (Salladasburg), Salladasburg Methodist Church, St.

presented by a variety of pastors, that all had the same goal, to speak the truth and bring the Word of Christ to the people attending. Diane Beiter has fond memories of the Camp Meeting. “I can remember as a little girl Camp Meeting was “fun” because I was there with my family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and others from the churches involved,” Beiter told Webb Weekly. “It was like a reunion. We always took a blanket to put on the seat and if by chance it was a cool evening we would then wrap up in it.” She continued, “For many years, my home church choir was responsible for

the special music for one evening during the week. As I grew older, I realized what a peaceful place Stabler’s Grove is and the importance of the purpose of having and attending Camp Meeting. It is a refreshing place to get away from the usual, hectic daily routine, fellowship with family and friends, meet new people, and be spiritually inspired by the music that is sung and by the message given. The only other sounds you might hear during the evening may be a car, motorcycle or tractor going past and some birds singing. Camp Meeting is a great place to be!” For further information call: 570-3982973 or 570-998-9033.

seating area. Many enjoyed donating their time and labor to construct this roof with posts donated by PP & L of Jersey Shore and lumber donated by Charles Paulhamus. In 1972, new seats with backs replaced the original log and plank seats. In 1940, an agreement was made between the Stabler family and the Association to have a permanent electric line run from their barn to the Grove. Just a few years ago this was removed and a generator now provides the electricity needed during the week. The Sunday School Association of Lycoming County at one time consisted of 15 districts, each one including churches of several denominations. District #11 is an affiliate of The Pennsylvania State Sunday School Association located in Harrisburg, which has programs and resources available to help and support all churches, Sunday Schools and Christian education workers. All churches and individuals interested in helping promote Sunday School in the county are welcome to become involved in the District #11 Association. The purpose is to lift up the Good News of Jesus Christ through ministries of compassion and to live the Great Commission given in the Gospel of Matthew 28:19 – 20. Over the years, many people have donated their time and talents to support the work of the Association. Many have come to the “Grove” to hear the words

John’s Chapel Evangelical Church, Pine Run Evangelical Church, Lycoming Christian Church, Larryville Methodist Church, Linden Presbyterian Church, Mt. Zion Methodist Church, and the Linden Methodist Church. On July 29, 1936, the tentative dates for the District #11 camp meeting were set for August 17th and continuing for two weeks. A motion was made and carried to hold camp meeting in P. A. Stabler’s woods. Two committees were formed. W. E. Anderson and E. L. Lovell were to see about lights and C. E. Reaser, R. C. Peterman and Fred Stabler about seats. At the September meeting it was decided that camp meeting would be an annual event. To prepare for that first camp meeting, a Tabernacle was built with donated lumber. It was and still is a rustic pavilion in a beautiful wooded mountaintop grove. The open air seating was made of logs and planks. P. A. Stabler pulled the logs from the woods with horses. Lloyd Kiess was stung and bees went up the pant legs of Floyd Paulhamus when a yellow jacket nest was disturbed. The planks were purchased from the Hoffman-Gouldy Lumber Co. for $38.49. Raymond Pepperman showed the young men how to use a broad ax to square timbers. Watson Kiess got a piano to be used for the services. Those seats were out in the open until 1970 when a roof was placed over the

German Made MIELE

7 YEAR WARRANTY!

So we decorate it with our traditions. We invent vast amounts of spiritual routine and ritual and drape it like garland all around the cross. We stand back and applaud our efforts. The garland makes the executioner’s cross look so much better. Then we add our ornaments – the legalisms we hold near and dear. We insist that people must look and dress a certain way. That they must never do or say certain things or go to certain places or hang out with certain kinds of people. We’re afraid that the bare cross is too accessible, so we add extra requirements to keep people away who might take advantage of its mercy and grace. Look how pretty the cross is becoming – all covered with garland and sparkling from our little additions! But that’s not enough. We also add the little colored lights of our finely crafted dogma and liturgies. We insist that people believe in our narrow interpretations and definitions and that they worship in very specific ways. We arrogant Christians really like our dogmas and liturgies. It makes us feel like we’re right and everyone else is wrong. That’s why we fight with each

other. We love being right. So let’s hang lots of our little man-made lights on the cross. There. Now it looks better – much better than that bare executioner’s cross adorned with just a sign and a dead Jesus. The trouble is, we’ve hung so much stuff on the cross that you can no longer see the Light of the world. It’s no wonder Jane Doe doesn’t believe in God. Let’s get back to Jane. For the next hour, Jane and I began taking decorations off the cross. When we were done, all that was left was Jesus, the sacrificed One. (And yes, we also took off the “King of the Jews” sign. After all, it should have read, “Behold! The Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world.”) She accepted the mercy and grace of Jesus a little while later. I had the blessed privilege of baptizing both Jane and her husband. Jane has since moved to another community. She is still loving and serving Jesus and working as a biology teacher at her local high school. But now she knows, loves and serves the God behind the biology she teaches.

n a bold move to provide increased parking space and to revamp much of the two blocks in the center of the city, a private corporation is backing a project to construct an $800,000 three-story garage in the West Third-WilliamLaurel streets area. The proposal, which has been in the planning stage for several months, was revealed to city council last week by Williamsport Mid-Town Area, Inc., which will provide the financing. The garage would be built just east and north of the county prison and would be on land now occupied by a municipal parking lot, the L.L. Stearns and Sons warehouse on Laurel Street, the W. Deeds and Williamsport Federal Savings and Loan Association warehouses on Willow Street and the Atlantic service station of William Street. The four buildings would

be razed to make way for the new structure. In the present thinking the site of the jail is involved. The entrance to the garage would be on West Third Street and the exit would be on William. The open-air building would hold 300 cars on three floors and its roof, as compared with fewer than 125 stalls for surface parking which could be set up in the same area. Under the project Laurel Street would be widened but Willow Street between Laurel and William probably would be eliminated with an alley established to service buildings on the south side of West Fourth Street. Williamsport Mid Town Inc., has also said that it is looking ahead to a similar garage in another part of the business section. Through all of the planning for the proposed garage, Mid-Town has worked closely with the Williamsport Redevelopment Authority and the Williamsport Parking Authority.

Here’s what most people don’t understand. When you’re heavy, you lose your strength, vitality and you can become feeble. And on top of that you can age prematurely because your “fat” cells clog your body’s vital organs.

orborygmus. That’s the technical term for what you’re experiencing now: great big rumbles from ‘neath your navel. Snarls from your stomach, a reminder that it’s snack time. Aside from sugary-salty goodness, though, and a feeling of satisfaction, what will you consume? To find out, read “This is What You Just Put in Your Mouth?” by Patrick Di Justo, and hang on to your gut… But first – the vending machine. The vending machine is close, so let’s start out with a cuppa joe, which includes an ingredient that “helps give real butter its flavor” and one that actually keeps bacteria off your teeth. So far, so good. Real good, in fact, so you might follow it up with something sweet to get you through your day, complete with “artificial human salivary enzymes,” perhaps topped with a product that contains “a high percentage of air.” Uhhh, or maybe not. How ‘bout something cheesy – some “cheese, processed cheese, cheese food, [or] cheese spread” – each of which are different, says Di Justo. Or salty, which might contain three ingredients that cause addiction in lab rats. If you’re watching your weight, though, beware: federal regulations state that serving size is generally based on what a four-year-old can consume. And expiration dates? Nope. There’s “no federal regulation to date food at all…” Well, now, your appetite is gone; in fact, you might want to lie down somewhere…

like, in front of a fire, where you might burn birdseed and “a giant sideways candle in your fireplace.” Or maybe you just need to be with friends, so put in your contacts (the solution for which may contain a product used with anticancer drugs) and mascara (which you definitely do not want to wear near a magnet!) and head down for your favorite libation (which could cause irregular heartbeat). Or maybe you’ll just skip it all to spend time with the dog (and feed him something that’s “deliberately stinky”) or the kids (and give them what “attempts to artificially re-create something that already exists…”). Bon appétit! “If you’re looking for shocking stories of the gigantic corporate conspiracy to poison America… you’re reading the wrong book,” says author Patrick Di Justo of “This is What You Just Put in Your Mouth?” Without intending to scare, he says he looked at various products with curiosity and the notion that knowing what’s there is better than not knowing. It can’t be an accident that he also entertains readers, then, can it? I don’t think it is: in this collection of Wired magazine articles, Di Justo is hilarious, as he explains how he learned what’s inside everyday products, not just food. What he finds may surprise and delight you. For sure, you’ll read ingredient labels a whole lot closer. Depending on how you look at it, this is a consumer’s dream, or it’s a nightmare. Either way, it’s a twistedly-fun and very eyeopening book to have. “This is What You Just Put in Your Mouth?” will give you food for thought – and it may make you growl.

Pennsylvania Reports Record Number of Bald-Eagle Nests Mid-year survey documents 277 nests statewide.

I

t was a scene that warmed many hearts. A bald eagle incubating two eggs in a falling snow, unwilling to budge as the nest turned white. As the flakes piled high, the bird was blanketed. Only its head could been seen, periscoping above the snow. The images captured in early March on the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Eagle Cam spotlighted the sacrifices parents make, and showed a lot about the resilience of bald eagles, and why they have been so successful in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

And as the Game Commission releases its annual mid-year report on bald-eagle nests statewide, the preliminary numbers represent an all-time high. So far this year, 277 bald-eagle nests have been documented in Pennsylvania, with nesting eagles present in at least 58 of the state’s 67 counties. That shatters the 2014 preliminary number of 254 nests, which also was an all-time high. And more nests remain to be counted as the year goes on. Game Commission Executive Director R. Matthew Hough spoke with excitement about the record numbers.

Even if nests were reported in a previous year, it’s important to report them again if they were used again this year, said Patti Barber, a biologist with the Game Commission’s Endangered and Nongame Birds section. People who have reported a nest as active in a previous year might not realize they should report back each year to help the Game Commission track the population over time, Barber said. It’s one of the challenges of documenting bald-eagle nests as the population of eagles continues to grow. Also, folks might assume bald eagles they’re seeing are associated with long-established nests, as opposed to new pairs setting up territories near established nests, Barber

“Like many Pennsylvanians, I remember a time when bald eagles were absent just about everywhere in the state, and it truly is astonishing how things have turned around,” Hough said. “Through our reintroduction program, our protection of eagles and effective management, we’ve gone from three nests statewide to what soon could be 300, all within the span of my career with the Game Commission. “It’s an accomplishment of which all Pennsylvanians can be proud,” Hough said. Of the nests reported so far this year, 20 are new, which could mean they were built and used for the first time this year or, if they existed previously, they were reported for the first time this year. The Game Commission urges all eagle nests be reported.

said. Reports of bald-eagle nests always are appreciated. Perhaps the easiest way to report a nest is to contact the Game Commission through its public comments email address: pgccomments@pa.gov, and use the words “Eagle Nest Information” in the subject field. Reports also can be phoned in to a Game Commission Region Office or the Harrisburg headquarters. “Even if nests are well known locally, please don’t hesitate to report them,” Barber said. “You might be adding a new nest to the list, or making certain that one reported in a previous year is accurately counted this year.” Each year, bald-eagle nests continue to be reported as the year goes on. In 2014, for instance, the preliminary number of 254 nests ballooned to 273 nests by year’s end. Other years have produced similar results. But the mid-year numbers are an accomplishment in their own right, Barber said. In 1983, when the Game Commission launched a seven-year reintroduction program, only three bald-eagle pairs were nesting statewide. Today, there are 277 with more remaining to be counted. “We so often refer to the story of the bald eagle as one of the greatest wildlife success stories out there, but it just keeps getting better all the time,” Barber said. “People are fascinated with eagles, and their chances to see them and watch them are better now than they’ve ever been.” Hough said the nearly 1.4 million people

who viewed the Game Commission’s Eagle Cam online this year illustrate the connection people have with bald eagles. And that connection is an important part of the bald eagle’s success, he said. “Without people who care, we wouldn’t have nearly the number of bald eagles we have in Pennsylvania today, and we probably wouldn’t have them at all,” Hough said. “When bald-eagles were in decline, it was people who led the way for their recovery. We joined to clean up the environment, entrusted wildlife agencies like the Game Commission to jumpstart restoration of eagle populations, and placed priority on protecting eagles to give them a chance to take hold. “The rest we left up to the eagles, and they continue to prove they’ll continue to be here for more and more Pennsylvanians to enjoy,” Hough said. Eagle reintroduction While Pennsylvania’s bald-eagle population is soaring, just a few decades ago, the bald eagle’s future looked bleak. Its population decimated by the effects of water pollution, persecution and compromised nest success caused by organochlorine pesticides such as DDT, only three pairs of nesting eagles remained in the state – all of them located in Crawford County, in northwestern Pennsylvania along the Ohio border. In 1983, the Game Commission launched a seven-year bald eagle restoration program. The agency, as part of a federal restoration initiative, sent employees to Saskatchewan

A bald eagle incubates two eggs during a March snowstorm, as its mate stands atop the snow in a nest near Hanover, Pa. The event, which was livestreamed on the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Eagle Cam, drew national attention and helps to explain why the state’s bald eagles have been so successful in their comeback. So far this year, a record-high 277 nests have been documented statewide activity, while others are sensitive. Their reaction often depends on the activity and approach of the individual, the nesting cycle stage, and if the eagles are used to seeing people. Adults that are scared from a nest could abandon it, or might not return in time to keep un-hatched eggs or young nestlings at the proper temperature. Frightened eaglets also could jump from the safety of the nest, then have no way to return. Those viewing eagle nests are urged to keep their distance and use binoculars or spotting scopes to aid their viewing. For more information on bald eagles and eagle-viewing etiquette, visit the Game Commission’s website, www.pgc.state. pa.us.

to obtain eaglets from wild nests. Initially, 12 seven-week-old eaglets were taken from nests in Canada’s Churchill River valley and brought to specially constructed towers at two sites. At these towers – at Haldeman Island on the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, and at Shohola Lake in Pike County – the birds were “hacked,” a process by which the eaglets essentially are raised by humans, but without knowing it, then released gradually into the wild. In all, 88 bald eaglets from Canada were released from the sites as part of the program, which was funded in part by the Richard King Mellon Foundation of Pittsburgh and the federal Endangered Species Fund. This reintroduction jumpstarted the recovery. By 1998, Pennsylvania was home to 25 pairs of nesting bald eagles. Within the next three years, the number of nesting pairs doubled and by 2006, more than 100 nests were confirmed statewide. The bald eagle population has continued to grow and expand in Pennsylvania and in 2014 the Game Commission removed the bald eagle from the state’s list of threatened species. Eagle-viewing tips While the bald eagle is no longer threatened in Pennsylvania or nationally, care still should be taken when viewing eagles, to prevent frightening them. Those encountering nests are asked to keep a safe distance. Disturbing eagles is illegal under the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Some pairs are tolerant of human

hen it comes to preserving, cooking or seasoning meats, fowl and fish there are more and more folks using smoking as a means to prepare these items. It can be performed as simply as cooking over a wood fire, which adds some smoke flavor and aroma, or by adding some wet wood chips to your gas grill when using it to cook your favorite meat that you like to grill. It is not a difficult process, and will add to the enjoyment and flavor of whatever you select for an afternoon or evening meal. It is also a really good way to prepare game meats of all kinds. Beginning with the wood chips, there are many varieties that can be used to add flavor during the smoking process. Any of the fruitwoods, particularly apple or cherry, work well. Additionally, alder, hickory or mesquite are favorites. While mesquite works well on just about anything you choose to smoke, it imparts the strongest smoke flavor, and thus it is best on red meats, any of the venisons or sausages. For a milder smoke flavor, you might use the fruitwoods or alder when smoking fish or fowl. While many of these are available commercially, gathering and using your own wood adds to the enjoyment of the whole experience. You should be able to find apple, cherry and hickory in our local

area. Use a saw, hatchet or axe to reduce the pieces in size, and then make sure you soak them well in water before using them for smoking. Smoking can be accomplished as simply as placing a pan of wood chips on the grate of your grill prior to cooking, so that smoke begins to emit prior to placing the meat on the grill for cooking. This works well when cooking and smoking only a few items. If you are interested in smoking a large amount at one time, such as when doing several chickens, numerous pieces of turkey or a large batch of venison backstraps or sausages, you might consider purchasing a vault style smoker or a pelletized smoker, such as the one offered by Camp Chef. With a unit like this, you can smoke large batches on available racks – a perfect way to do your favorite type of jerky, using venison, goose, turkey or any other game meats. For several years now, I have been enjoying using one of Camp Chef’s wood pellet smokers. It is easy to control the desired temperature and maintain an even slow cooking environment to do everything from several whole chickens to a filet of salmon or a small whole piglet! The ability to easily maintain the temperature makes it an ideal way to smoke jerky while using the multiple-layered racks. You merely set the desired temperature on a digital indicator and an electric motor will feed

I have had degenerative disc disease for some time and lost almost two inches in height. The pain I experienced was overwhelming. I was unable to do the things I wanted to do, like shopping. I needed my husband to help just to maintain any balance. I was almost housebound. I tried different forms of treatment including epidural injections, physical therapy and also the stimulator and got no results, improvement or relief. Then I went to Lycoming Physical Medicine and they used the Protec spinal therapy system to Billi Smith help me. The results were wonderful. I am able to shop again without the help of my husband, which makes him happy too. I have such freedom to go where I want. The pain in my right leg is gone. I am so thrilled that I recommend Lycoming Physical Medicine to everyone that I can. I just can’t say enough good about their staff.

use this meat – they turn out great and are as tasty as any roasted drumstick you can get at a local county fair! After brining overnight in your favorite brine concoction, smoke the legs and thighs at 200-225 degrees for 2-3 hours, then raise the temperature in the smoker to about 275-300 and smoke for another 1 – 1 ½ hours – making sure they reach an internal temperature of 165-170 degrees. Once they are completely cooked, they can be eaten immediately or wrapped individually in heavy duty foil and placed in the oven to keep them warm. Once cooled, they can be placed in the refrigerator in zip lock freezer bags, but chances are, once your family or friends try them, they won’t last long!

the wood pellets into the firebox to develop and maintain the selected temperature automatically. It is that simple! Brining is a step that you should definitely include to enhance the flavor of any meat, poultry or fish you plan to smoke. A basic brine recipe is: ¼ cup of kosher salt, ¼ cup packed brown sugar and 4 cups of water. Wisk in a bowl until sugar and salt are completely dissolved, then pour over meat. Make sure meat is completely covered, then place in the refrigerator for several hours, and perhaps overnight. To this basic recipe, add your favorite herbs and spices and perhaps a little white wine, soy sauce or hot sauce. If you have never tried it, smoking wild turkey legs and thighs is a great way to

Personally I think it’s a real stretch to think that there would be a significant number of females that would take up hunting because they could opt for hot pink instead of blaze orange. I’m guessing that other than Bruce Jenner most hunters will probably continue to use good old blaze orange but in this day and age who knows. Well, that’s just a few of the issues that I’m sure we will be hearing more about but for now I’m off to a local lake to try out a new hot pink plastic worm that’s supposed to be good for catching big largemouths.

Apparently the Game Commission is open to the use of semi-autos for hunting, but they would like to be able to have complete control over their use regarding what species of game could be hunted, when the game could be hunted, calibers that could be used and how many rounds in the magazine. Sportsmen are really split over this issue so this debate may go on for awhile. I’ll have to admit this last issue made me chuckle a bit. Apparently the state of Wisconsin is considering the use of “hot pink” as an acceptable color to be used alongside the traditional blaze orange. Word of this potential change has now

“student athletes” is not an archaic term. “I don’t believe so. If I did I probably wouldn’t have been the right fit for Penn State. Penn State truly does believe in the student athlete. While some people may want to call it athlete student, actually I think we should just call them students who happen to be participants in college athletics. Student needs to be part of it because that is our ‘why’. Our purpose is to educate them through their participation in athletics. Our coaches are their professors on and off the field and they gain a huge education component on what is going to impact them in their lives. If we ever give up the student part of that, raise the white flag and go OK, then forget it, I’m out.” To the Penn State fan base, Barbour delivers the following message. “We may do execute things differently and bring some different ideas and the mechanics of how we do things may be a little bit different but I can promise the Penn State fans that the values from which Penn State has always operated about doing things the right way, educating, about having student athletes that are serious about their education; that will always be Penn State. That isn’t going to change because it is Sandy Barbour or James Franklin. We’re different people. We may do things a little bit differently, but we are going to do things with the exact same underpinnings of the values that have always been true for Penn State.”

of our fans, no matter where they are coming from, to come to Penn State and enjoy the experience.” Discussing Penn State’s football schedules, the reality of satisfying the fan base and the goals of the athletic department present challenges. “Every fan base I’ve ever been a part of wants you to play three or four top 25 teams in your non-conference schedule. I get that, but it is not realistic. On the other side of that is the football coach that has different things in mind in terms of the advancement and development of his football team. On the other side of that, playing three or four absolute wins is probably not where you want to be. I’m going to land closer to the football coach’s view of being able to develop a winning culture.” “We play in one of, if not, the toughest conference in America. We are moving to nine conference games and as a conference we’ve made the decision that we are not going to be scheduling Division 1-AA teams. We’ve got three non-conference games and next year will be adding Pitt to the schedule. I think the Pitt series will be a great one, but does that mean we play them every year? I don’t know, with the restriction of the three out-of-conference games, if that will be the right thing to do for our football program or our fans.” With growing sentiment that today’s college athletes should be financially compensated, Barbour holds firm that

Injured? Call us now!

We have recovered tens of millions of dollars for our clients... • $5.4 million settlement when a vehicle was rear-ended by a commercial truck. • $1 million settlement for dog-bite injury. • Significant settlements for product liability and professional negligence.

We know how insurance companies work!

Doug Engelman has 29 years experience in civil litigation. He has recovered tens of millions of dollars for victims across the Commonwealth.

Doug Engelman, Esq.

David Wilk has ten years experience as a defense attorney, working for insurance companies defending personal injury lawsuits. He is now representing the injured against the large insurance companies.

We bring the high-powered expertise of big city law firms to the people of our community on a truly personal level. We live here. We practice here. And, we have a genuine interest in the welfare of those who are injured here. Our offices are staffed on a regular basis by our attorneys and legal team. We have an actual presence, not a phone number that is forwarded to a main office somewhere out of the region. We are here for you.

Dave Wilk, Esq.

The consultation is free. The advice is invaluable. We make house calls if you are unable to come to our office!
