Too Hot to Cook

ou are correct. I am not in fact Jimmy.

As of this writing we are a couple of days ahead of the 4th of July, and the last I saw him he was headed toward the Market St. bridge bound and deter ined to get us fireworks one way or another. Hopefully I don’t need bail money by the time you read this.

Also as of this writing it is hotter than the devil’s front porch. I’m writing Thursday the 2nd, which is supposed to be the worst day of it. My sister lives in Georgia and it’s hotter here than it is there. It shouldn’t be hotter here than it is in eorgia nd not e en north eorgia he s the final stop in iddle eorgia before you hit south Georgia.

Even though the weather is supposed to brea this wee end there is still plenty of summer ahead and while I do have central air, my HVAC system is a little dated and sometime struggles to keep up with the heat when it gets really hot.

That usually leads to me refusing to make any sort of dinner that requires the stove or oven. The air fryer is OK, but that’s where it ends.

That has led me to search our recipes that will a e e eryone in the fa ily happy, but isn’t forcing everyone to

drizzle with balsamic glaze and garnish with basil to serve eat salads and sandwiches every day.

Though I make really amazing salads and sandwiches, so I wouldn’t mind so much.

So here are couple of recipes to get through the hot weather without turning on the oven and turning your home into an oven.

Both of these recipes I found on the Delish website.

Bruschetta Chicken Stuffed Avocados Ingredients: • 3 avocados, halved and pits removed • Juice of 1/2 lemon • 2 cups rotisserie chicken • 2 large tomatoes, diced 4 red onion finely chopped bsp e tra- irgin oli e oil 4 tsp red pepper a es • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • Balsamic glaze, for garnish • Thinly sliced basil, for garnish Directions: Remove skin from avocados then squeeze lemon juice all over to prevent browning.

In a large bowl mix together chicken, tomatoes, red onion, oil, and red pepper a es and season with salt and pepper Spoon mixture into avocados then

Ingredients: • 1 Roma tomato, sliced • 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced (about 1/2 c.)

• 4 oz. Black Forest or capicola ham, sliced • 4 oz. provolone, sliced • 2 oz. genoa salami • 2 oz. hot soppressata or pepperoni • 1 cup shredded romaine • 1/3 cup sliced roasted red peppers • 1/4 cup sliced drained peperoncini • 1/3 cup mayonnaise bsp store-bought or ho e ade pesto • 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar • 1/2 tsp. onion powder • 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 (10”) ciabatta rolls, halved, toasted Directions: On a large cutting board, chop tomato,

onion ha pro olone sala i soppressata lettuce red peppers and peperoncini with a sharp knife, tossing as you go, until bite-si ed pieces for In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, pesto inegar onion powder and talian seasoning season with salt and pepper and stir to combine. Add chopped ham mixture and toss with a spatula or spoon until coated.

Distribute chopped mixture between rolls. Cut each roll in half to serve.

Hopefully these will help keep you fed while also keeping cool this summer. I also think the chopped sandwich would be great to take a long to the beach, or la e or boat or e en to your ne t potluck!

T

his week’s article is kind of a continuation of how I ended last week’s.

I finished with this: “Our generation needs strong, present, resilient parents. Moms and dads working together as a team.”

That thought stuck with me.

The inspiration for this week’s article came after Lauren and I took Beau on his first beach trip. We called it “Dino at the Beach.”

We had an amazing long weekend.

Watching him experience the ocean, the sand, and all the new sights was something I will never forget. Lauren and I made memories that will last a lifetime with our little guy.

He truly is the love of our lives.

But...

For those of you who have taken a baby to the beach — or are planning to someday — let me tell you...

It is not easy.

It was one of the most fun weekends we have had. It was also one of the most exhausting.

It took a lot of work. More importantly, it took a lot of teamwork. Lauren and I were constantly working together to accomplish two things.

First, making sure Beau had everything he needed. Second, making sure the other person was doing OK. When we got married, one of my favorite things Lauren ever said to me was that together we would always equal one hundred percent.

Some days that might be fifty-fifty.

Other days it might be eighty-twenty.

Or twenty-eighty.

But together, we would always get it done.

That really hit home this weekend.

I could tell Beau was wearing Lauren out one afternoon. She just needed a little time to Jimmy recharge.

Webb III So, Dad loaded up Beau, and we headed to the boardwalk to walk around and kill some time while Mom got a chance to relax.

She came back refreshed, and we all had a great day together.

The same thing happened for me.

After the drive home trying to travel around nap time while keeping a baby asleep…I was mentally drained.

Lauren looked at me and said, “Go to the gym. Blow off some steam.”

An hour later, I came home refreshed and ready to be fully present again.

That is what being a team looks like.

It is recognizing when the other person needs help and stepping in without keeping score.

Right now, our dinners are a perfect example.

One of us is usually standing up, bouncing Beau or dancing around the kitchen while the other one eats as fast as possible.

Then...

We switch.

It may not be our chance to enjoy our fine

dining.

But it is teamwork.

And honestly, I would not trade it for anything.

Something else really stuck with me this weekend.

Every time it happens, I give Lauren a little wink like, “Man, you are lucky to have me.”

I am kidding... of course.

But when we are out somewhere, people will say to Lauren, “It is so awesome that your husband is holding the baby so you can eat,” or “I wish my husband would do that.”

Honestly, that surprises me every time.

To me, I am not babysitting. I am being a dad.

We were also told recently by a server that she sees moms struggling with the diaper bag, the stroller, the baby, and everything else that comes with parenting while Dad is worrying about his own stuff.

Guys...

We have to do better.

Step in and give your significant other support. Be there for them not when they need you but before they need you.

Hold the baby.

Push the stroller.

Change the diaper.

Give your spouse the chance to catch their breath.

That is what being a teammate looks like.

Being a dad is one of the greatest gifts God can give you.

Treat it like one.

f you enjoy good food, tractor pulls, demolition derbies, great grandstand shows, agricultural displays, and arts and crafts, the 155th Lycoming County Fair in Hughesville is the place to be.

County fairs like the Lycoming County Fair started as events where local farmers showed their best livestock and crops. Over time, they have grown into much more, and the Lycoming County Fair is no exception.

Here is the schedule of events for this year’s fair.

The fair opens on July 8 at 4 p.m., and rides start at 5 p.m.

July 9: will be highlighted by Twilight Harness Racing beginning at 4 p.m.

There is a livestock supply auction at 6 p.m. at the Red Dog Mobil Storage Stage.

That day also marks the start of entertainment at the Red Dog Mobile Storage Stage.

On July 10: “Bull Ride Mania” kicks off with ulls and arrels at

p.m. There will also be Kid’s Mutton Busting, Barrel Racing, and Bull Riding.

The Amelia Earhart Funway will be busy with Startire Entertainment, Pig Races, the Hughesville High School Theater Club, and “Magic with Miss Ashlyn.”

The Red Dog Mobile Storage Stage will feature “Dan and Galla” at 6 and 8 p.m.

July 11: will have the Tommy Hendricks Memorial Demolition Derby in the Grandstand area at 5 p.m.

The Derby will have the categories of Pro Stock V-8, Vans Demos, Queens Clash Demos, Stocks Compacts Demo, and Youth Demo.

The Earhart Funway and the Red Dog obile tage will once again offer fun and entertainment.

July 12: features Demolition Derby and Figure 8 Races beginning at 5 p.m. in the Grandstand area.

July 17: is a big day for tractor fans, with the “Dale Wheeland Memorial Tractor Pull” at 6 p.m.

July 18: the last day of the fair, features the 16th Annual PATPA 4x4 and Diesel Track Pull.

Mack Berry will be the entertainment at the Red Dog Mobile Stage at 6 and 8 p.m.

Admission to the fair is $4, kids 12 and under are free with a paid adult. A 10 day gate pass is available for $30.

Park on the fairgrounds is $4 with handicapped parking next to gate entrances and wheelchair and scooter rentals are available.

There’s something for everyone at this year’s Lycoming County Fair, so be sure to come out, have some fun, play some games, ride some rides and of course — enjoy some of the great food! Don’t forget to check out all the animals and livestock and the great artwork from local students!

adio Station WRAK received innumerable compliments and congratulations for the new service it is offering to the people of Central Pennsylvania. Enjoying its first day as member of the National Broadcasting Company network, several new programs were heard for the first time locally.

According to George E. Joy, station manager, everything

went well throughout the day, with all programs coming in as scheduled. He also mentioned as time goes on and the staff and the staff becomes more accustomed to network procedure and network time it will operate with even more precision.

WRAK’s first network broadcast was with the world news round-up at eight o’clock, which features reporters in London, England, Cairo, Egypt, Washington D.C. and Moscow, Russia.

of rain pelt the parched earth. It’s such a moving experience and, to me, the smell and sound of the rain beating against the hot pavement is positively intoxicating. Never mind how comforting hard rain on the roof and rolling thunder sound in the wee hours of the night.

I’m pretty sure my kids have inherited my penchant for thunderstorms too, although when they were small, they were frightened by the deafening cracks and low rumbles that shook the house. We huddled together, as I remember, reading books on the couch in lieu of watching TV since we usually lost power if the storm was especially damaging. The dogs cowered, desperately searching for a place to hunker down in order to escape the rolling thunder that seemed to envelop us all. I’ll never forget one of the cats hiding behind our washing machine for the duration of one storm — a place I never once considered a refuge before.

At any rate, I am intrigued by an approaching storm, as the leaves of nearby trees show their undersides —

especially the silver maples. Apparently, it has something to do with increasing humidity. And the more the wind intensifies the ore noticeable the silvery backsides of the leaves become, almost as if the trees are signaling a warning. And somehow the green colors deepen to an even greener hue during downpours (or maybe that’s just my imagination) as I watch the leaves drip onto the thirsty ground below.

What follows the storm is almost as satisfying to witness, as the clouds brea and the sun finally reappears The air has a newness about it, as the steam rises from asphalt, concrete and grassy spaces, warm puddles all around — so inviting to bare feet. The heat returns with a vengeance as the searing sun beats down upon the land.

Even still, a distant rumble of thunder can be heard, which makes my heart happy.

ne of the easiest and chicest ways to update your outfit in the summer is with jewelry. I’ve been opting lately for simple garments like pull-on linen pants, white tanks, and Velcro-strap sandals for my daily look. In general, summer style has fewer layers, lighter fabrics, and plays into a “throw it on and go” approach.

This creates a blank canvas to bust out some statement pieces to elevate your look from humdrum to chic and sleek. Let’s run down some trends from bold studs to bangles, and mixing metals.

First up, chokers. Not the delicate, ribboning, or crochet kind from the 90s and early 00s, think sculptural and metal. A structured shape rendered in hammered silver or brass frames the neckline to elevate a simple scoopneck V-neck tee. he Lycoming County Commissioners moved their weekly meeting to Wednesday, June 24, breaking from their standard Thursday schedule to address an urgent matter that demanded immediate action.

The shift signaled the gravity of what was about to unfold. Data center development has accelerated across Pennsylvania, and Lycoming County suddenly found itself at a crossroads. The commissioners needed to act fast, and they needed to coordinate directly with local townships that would ultimately control where these massive operations could be built.

The central issue centered on an uncomfortable truth. The county’s data center zoning ordinance dates back to 1991, with the most recent amendment occurring in 2021. Neither version contemplated the scale and resource intensity of modern data centers. These facilities consume staggering amounts of electricity and water to function continuously. They generate constant operational noise that extends far beyond what traditional industrial operations produce. They require sophisticated infrastructure to support round-the-clock operations. The old ordinance treated them as minor industrial uses, which they decidedly are not. The commissioners decided

to confront this disconnect directly rather than continue operating under regulations that no longer made sense in a rapidly changing technological landscape.

The Wednesday meeting brought together county officials and representatives from local townships to coordinate a unified response to an emerging crisis. The commissioners declared the existing data center ordinance officially invalid, a dramatic step that triggered a specific legal timeline.

An 180-day window opened immediately, giving the county a defined period to draft, review, and implement entirely new zoning regulations tailored to modern realities. This curative amendment process is a structured way to fix a broken framework, rather than ignoring problems and hoping they go away.

The urgency became undeniable when a Williamsport company proposed a massive data center along John Brady Drive in Muncy Township. That proposal forced the issue from theoretical concern into an immediate crisis. The commissioners recognized they needed legal cover to slow development while new rules were being written, and declaring the old ordinance defective provided exactly that protection. The 180day grace period gives the county breathing room to work, while developers must pause their applications pending new regulations.

The task force helping rural townships, the fasttracked ordinance process, and the legal declaration of invalidity all represent deliberate choices to maintain local control over development rather than allowing outside corporations to dictate where massive industrial operations are built. Every decision made in the coming months will shape the region for generations.

Conversely, someone’s fleeting desire to be a social media influencer or to lose the same 10 pounds they’ve been meaning to lose every year doesn’t have the same urgency. When you need to accomplish a goal, it becomes an obligation, and you are more likely to go through greater barriers to achieve it.

The fourth habit is increasing productivity. This does not mean being busy or pretending to be busy. Being productive means understanding what work is important to achieving a goal and focusing on it. It means protecting your time. Will a specific task move you closer to your goal, or is it a distraction?

High performers prioritize and are very efficient. They create a target and a clear plan and stick to them. They are able to decline things that will detract them from their goal.

The second habit Burchard identified as essential to being a high performer was energy or stamina. This is energy in a very general sense. Having clarity is great, but you need the stamina to see things through. You need the physical, mental, and emotional energy to generate the sustained effort to do what is necessary. I’m sure all of us, from time to time, have begun a project, only to give up in frustration, or wanted to learn a new skill but quickly lost interest. To reach our goals, we need the energy to stick with the plan, regardless of how hard things get. To achieve this sort of energy, we need to manage our stress, stay fit through a healthy diet and exercise, get lots of quality sleep, and make sure that we are not wasting our energy on things that are unimportant to achieving our goal. We also need to keep a positive attitude, as negativity will drain us more quickly than most things. It’s not about always being happy, but about being resilient enough to move quickly past setbacks.

The third essential habit, according to Burchard, is raising necessity, which focuses on motivation. Basically, some researchers believe that people perform better when they feel that it is imperative that they succeed. Think about it: if a goal were connected to something important, such as your responsibili-

Start Planning for Fall Food Plots

A

lthough we are at the beginning of the summer season, it is not too early to focus on fall food plots; in fact, the time could not be better to begin the process. To do it well, there is planning research and fieldwor to do and with the drier weather we seem to be having, it would be a good idea to get started now.

While the general intent of most food plots is to provide a food source for deer, using the sa e plot for fall and spring tur eys should be a consideration. It is a generally

accepted practice, therefore, to plant clover as a preferred feed for deer and tur eys will use it as well, but it is generally accepted that late winter frost seeding or early spring planting is the time for the greatest success when planting clover or a mix of clover and chic ory o let s focus on other plants that will provide more hunting opportunities this coming fall.

First, determine the size and location of the food plot s depending on your property s layout and the terrain you are wor ing with Usually, it is preferable to have several smaller plots rather than one large one. Deer tend to

plant. ffering a di ersity of plants across a property is important since the biological needs of a deer dictates a need for a wide variety of foods. The greater the selection you provide, the greater the attractiveness for the deer that will frequent your food plots.

With the availability of acorns and beechnuts in the upcoming fall months, your fall food plots need to both attract and hold deer.

For food plots in the size range of 1/2 acre to an acre or larger, consider planting a cereal grain such as cereal rye or winter wheat. Cereal grains should generally be planted in mid to late August, but winter wheat can be planted as late as October or early November. If you want to provide the uic est attraction for late plantings during the middle of hunting season, consider a

wor the edges or outside of a plot and if it is too large, they may never really use much of the center area. With smaller planting areas, the deer will tend to use all the area, and with several smaller plots, there will be more places to set up blinds or tree stands around these food sources, particularly near trails leading into the plots.

As always, once you locate your proposed plot, the next (and extremely critical) step is to do a soil sa ple analysis Chec with your County g gent or the fol s where you normally purchase lime, fertilizer, and seed for their guidance in doing this sampling properly. By using trail cameras strategically placed around the food plot, you can zero in on just which trails are being used for entry and exit of the feed sources and note the time of activity as well. You should be able to get the stands in place well before the hunting season begins.

When planning out what to establish in smaller food plots, such as a half-acre or less along a field edge or tuc ed away in a forested area, a mixture of brassicas, turnips, rapeseed, and beets is a popular choice. It is recommended that brussels sprouts and other leafy greens be planted 70 to 80 days before the first frost for a i u production which means late July or early August here in the North. used to be a fan of summer, but I don’t do well with the heat. I am a big guy who tends to sweat, and I shouldn’t be allowed to wear my gray tees. The temperatures are getting close to 100 degrees. It’s miserable. The humidity is what kills me. Last week I was sporting a fleece. Today? I am a mess. I don’t go outside. No to golf. Forget the pools and the beach. I would rather stay indoors.

My fishing is slowing down. It’s too damn hot during the day. I will try my

The water is low and crystal clear. You will see trout holding with very little movement. I’ve spotted the same golden rainbow in the same pool for the past three weeks. He hasn’t moved.

Seriously. The trout are opening and closing their mouths. No. They are not trying to feed. They are maxed out and trying to breathe. Circulating more water around their gills.

Rainbows and Browns are the most resilient in the trout family. Another reason why they get stocked. Their optimal temps are between 44 and 67 degrees. When the water warms above that number, these fish become stressed. They immediately stop feeding and go into survival mode. If the temps reach 73 degrees or higher for

an extended period, it can be extremely dangerous. Not good, Buzz.

Colder nights and rain showers will eventually help. But until then. Give these poor trout a pass. Especially the large waters like Pine, Lycoming, Loyalsock, and Muncy Creeks. Give these fish a chance. Target other species.

That’s what I do. The Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass seasons are underway. Jensen and I have switched. We have been nailing the Smallies in the backyard. We took my young nephew out a few times. Bryson Daniel is the man. He is new. The big fella would rather swim in the creek than fish. But Bryson got a few decent bass on topwater, and now he is hooked. There is nothing like it. Fishing is the best. He is already planning a trip this Saturday.

Jensen and I will cave. He is our buddy.

Enjoy the warm weather this holiday weekend. But remember to give our poor trout a break. Focus on other warm-weather fish. Smallmouth bassing is a blast. Okay. I tried something new this week. Did anyone catch the random love? I am a huge fan. I believe there are five hidden references.
