Getting Kids to Read

ast week I wrote about how important it is for kids to read. But what do you do with the reluctant reader? The one who just doesn’t like or doesn’t have a lot of interest in reading?

One thing I’ve noticed (and what librarians often say) is that reluctant readers don’t hate reading — they hate books that don’t grab them. Once they find their kind of story, it’s amazing how quickly they can burn through books.

Obviously, this is an “within reason” scenario, but for the most part I am a proponent of the ‘If they can read it, they can read it,’ philosophy. In other words, if they are capable of reading and understanding a book — they are allowed to read that book. Again — parental discretion is advised. Just because I was reading Carrie and It at 10 doesn’t mean all kids should be.

So that begs the question — what are some books to try with the reluctant reader to help them find their literary ‘in?’

I’m glad you asked — I have recommendations!

My first recommendation is a series that I am actually reading right now. It is the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Probably better for older teens, and especially kids who like video games. Picture The Hunger

Games meets Baldur’s Gate. It’s funny, it’s smart, and I am devouring the series!

Action & Adventure: – The Last Kids on Earth (Max Brallier): A monster apocalypse turns into one giant adventure. Lots of illustrations, short chapters, and tons of humor.

– I Survived (Lauren Tarshis): Each book follows a kid surviving a real historical disaster—the Titanic, Pearl Harbor, Pompeii, 9/11, hurricanes, and more.

– Hatchet (Gary Paulsen): A thirteen-yearold survives alone in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash. Still one of the best survival stories ever written.

Kids Who Love to Laugh These are absolute gold for reluctant readers because they mix illustrations with text.

– Diary of a Wimpy Kid – school life and awkward middle-school moments.

– Dog Man – goofy graphic novels packed with action and jokes.

– Big Nate – mischievous middle-school humor.

– InvestiGators – two alligator detectives solving mysteries with comic-book energy.

Parents sometimes dismiss these because they’re heavily illustrated, but they absolutely count as reading—and they’re often the bridge to longer novels.

Fantasy Fans – Percy Jackson: Greek mythology meets modern-day adventure.

Fast, funny, and packed with action.

– Wings of Fire: Dragons. Political intrigue.

Adventure.

Hugely popular with middle-school readers.

Steph – Amari and the Night Noviello Brothers: A girl discovers a hidden magical world while searching for her missing brother.

Think Harry Potter with a fresh twist.

– Keeper of the Lost Cities: A long-running fantasy series that has created some truly devoted readers.

Mystery & Thrillers These are fantastic for kids who binge crime shows with their parents.

– The Inheritance Games – riddles, family drama, and a billionaire’s fortune.

– A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – a cold case becomes dangerously real. (Older teens.)

– One of Us Is Lying – five students walk into detention; only four come out alive.

(Older teens.)

– Greenglass House – a cozy mystery perfect for younger readers.

Science Fiction – Scythe – one of the best YA sci-fi series of the last decade.

– Skyward – a determined teen dreams of becoming a starfighter pilot.

– Ender’s Game – a classic that still hooks many teens.

– Project Hail Mary – ideal for older teens who enjoy science and humor.

A note for parents: this is the hill I’ll happily stand on: Don’t be a reading snob.

If your child devours graphic novels, let them.

If they love horror, let them.

If they only want books about dragons, sharks, WWII, football, or Minecraft, let them.

Reading is like exercise — the best workout is the one you’ll actually do. A child who reads Dog Man every night is building vocabulary, comprehension, stamina, and confidence. Those skills transfer to every other kind of reading they’ll do later.

Never make a child feel guilty for what they choose to read. The goal isn’t to create literary critics; it’s to create lifelong readers.

Also, if you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m not Jimmy. Jimmy decided it was too nice to work, and you know what? Fair enough. He will be back next week after spending some time in the sunshine and recharging!

I, however, will be off next week. I am having a minor wrist surgery and will be taking a few days off the computer to recover! I will hopefully be finishing book 3 of the DCC series and possibly getting into book 4.

or 74 years, the sound of Beagles bawling could be heard at the non-pro t Lycoming County Beagle Club. Nestled in the hills of Muncy, PA, the club spans 145 acres with 4 enclosed running grounds. In June of 1952, the club was born from humble beginnings. Nine passionate founding members pooled their own hardearned money to establish the club as a home for their shared love of beagling.

Today, the club endeavors to carry that torch passed forward by continuing to promote and better the breed through breeding, training, and conducting eld trials held several times throughout the year. The club is a member of the Iroquois Beagle Gundog Association (IBGA), Pennsylvania Beagle Gundog Federation (PBGF), and Northeast Beagle Gundog Federation (NEBGF).

Our youth are the lifeblood of the sport. Without a new generation to pass the leash to, these storied traditions risk fading away. The Lycoming County Beagle Club actively strives to foster a love for the outdoors that can endure for generations to come.

To support this mission, the club makes regular contributions to the Junior Beagler program. This handson program teaches children how to properly handle, care for, train, and run hounds in both competitive eld trials and traditional hunting events.

To encourage this next generation of outdoorsmen and women, junior memberships are readily open to youth aged 10-18.

lvis Tribute Artist Ryan Pelton heads the entertainment at this year’s Clinton County Fair August 1 to 8. In addition to Pelton, there will also be other fine entertainment at the fair as well.

And of course, there will be other fair features, such as demolition derbies, animal and other agricultural displays, and a wide variety of other activities.

“We’re excited for this year, and we invite you to come out and enjoy and support your Fair!” Fair Managers Donna Wech and Barb Forshey told Webb Weekly. “We try to bring in a variety of entertainment for all ages — there really is something for everyone.”

Nightly prize drawings are back for the 2026 Fair. Winners of the 9:30 p.m. drawings, held from the Auxiliary Stage, receive bicycles this year, and you must be present to win.

On opening day, August 1, Fair goers can enjoy a Classic and Custom Car and Truck Show, with vehicles on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you’ve got a favorite Chili recipe, enter it in the Chili Cook-Off Monday at 3:30 p.m. You can also participate in the Baked Goods Auction at 5:30 p.m. that day.

Throughout the week, those who come to the Fair can walk through and admire a variety of antique tractors on display.

New at this year’s Fair is the On-Foot Rodeo Triathlon, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Monday in the Horse Arena. The Triathlon is open to ages five through adult. It involves three-person teams, with one team member competing in dummy roping, another in goat tying (dummy), and the third member in onfoot barrel racing. The timed competition should make for a fun night for participants and spectators.

During Fair Week, Daily Gate Admission is only $5 per person, starting at 7:00 a.m. on weekends, and after 3 p.m. during the week. Children age 12 and under are admitted free. Parking is an additional $2 per vehicle.

he Lycoming County Commissioners gathered to address two competing visions for the region’s future. Data center regulations demand immediate attention, yet three major infrastructure investments promise to reshape how the county operates and who it employs. The commissioners

moved through both challenges with the kind of deliberate focus that characterizes governance across Pennsylvania’s largest county by land area, a sprawling expanse of roughly 1,227 square miles where wilderness and workforce have historically defined the identity.

The data center zoning work continues its accelerated pace through an established 180-day timeline.

“Ain’t” … Ain’t in the Dictionary!

(But Actually, It Is … )

on’t say ain’t or your mother will faint, and your father will fall in a bucket of paint.”

I daresay most folks in my Boomer generation recall this jocular proscription — often used as a child-

hood taunt against some allegedly barbarian schoolmate. And indeed, for quite a while in the 20th century, gradeschool teachers and other misguided adults did indeed react to ain’t as though it would precipitate all kinds of personal misfortune — like moms keeling over, or dads dashing off for the household turpentine.

So … why did I use it in my latest

“Weird Words”? As Webb’s resident vocab expert, shouldn’t I know and model proper English? Or to put it bluntly: Ain’t I any smarter than that??

Well, the word “ain’t” can be found in most dictionaries. But then, these have generally abandoned their onetime goal of prescribing correct English, and are now largely content to simply describe common practice (which is why they usually include swear-words and other offensive terminology). Like the venerable Merriam-Webster, a good dictionary will generally tag ain’t as “informal,” “slang” or “colloquial” — though there is in fact one sense in which it’s perfectly grammatical.

Take these sentences: “You are smart, aren’t you?” “She is smart, isn’t she?” “That was smart, wasn’t it?”

Note that the short linking verb in the first part of each question (are, is, was) later gets repeated in the contraction: aren’t, isn’t, wasn’t.

So why do we say, “I am smart, aren’t I?” That’s a different verb the second

time around (are instead of am). If we styled it like the other sentences above, we’d get this: “I am smart, amn’t I?” But that sounds ridiculous.

Which is partly because the mn sound is tough to pronounce; and you’d be surprised how much English spelling & usage are dictated by pronunciation.

(For example: We use an before vowel-sounds because it’s hard to say “a apple” or “a hour.” And we long ago started respelling the prefix inso it’d be easier to pronounce words like impartial, illogical and irresistible.)

Thus, amn’t (“am not”) became ain’t for the sake of smooth speech; and it’s technically OK — which is why the graceful Grace Kelly gets to say it in Hitchcock’s 1954 classic Rear Window. (This occurs when James Stewart says a girl “just has to be” — or “be pretty”; to which his lovely costar responds, “Well, ain’t I?”) After all, we wouldn’t want the future Princess Grace to use bad grammar!

But sadly, none of this justifies my own use of the contraction in “Weird Words” No. 129; there, I wrote (gasp), “it ain’t.”

So here’s how I see it: A writer’s job is to communicate, and the journalist’s job in particular is to be interesting and hold your attention. The word ain’t tends to do all this pretty well — especially if one reader passes out and another topples into a batch of off-white latex exterior (which, let’s face it, ain’t gonna happen very often).

And even Merriam-Webster admits that ain’t is “occasionally seen in journalistic prose” (phew!) — explaining at greater length: “Ain’t has historically been widely disapproved as nonstandard, despite its appearance in the writings of authors such as Herman Melville and Louisa May Alcott. Nevertheless, it is flourishing in informal American English with the meanings ‘am/are/is not’ and ‘have/has not.’”

The wonderful M-W likewise

points out that in African-American English, it can stand for “did not” (as in, “He ain’t ride the bus today”) — and in several varieties of English, as “an intensive negative”: She ain’t never lost a race.

And Wikipedia, in its very long entry, pretty much sums up my own approach: “Linguists consider use of ain’t to be grammatical, as long as its users convey their intended meaning to their audience. In other words, a sentence such as ‘She ain’t got no sense’ is grammatical because it generally follows a native speaker’s word order, and because a native speaker would recognize its meaning.”

As far as hard-and-fast rules go, I’m tempted to quote the great Van Morrison, with his fetching 1967 song “He Ain’t Give You None.”

So don’t even get me started on split infinitives and using prepositions to end your sentence with.

I ain’t got space to deal with that here.

Egg Tacos Scramble eggs and wrap them

Egg noodles or cheese tortellini! prepared when ready to eat. Follow directions on the bag for cooking instructions.

Directions: Put all ingredients in the slow cooker and cook on low for 4-6 hours.

When ready to eat, place pork chops and dressing over cooked egg noodles, or top egg noodles with butter and shaker parmesan cheese.

To freeze Ranch Pork Chops Put all ingredients in a gallon-size Ziploc freezer bag, label with date/instructions (freezes for up to 6 months . To prepare, thaw overnight, then pour everything into a crock pot, and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours.

Sometimes, feeding yourself isn’t about creating an experience. Nope, it is simply about getting across the nish line of the day. I’ve learned every night doesn’t need to be a three- to ve-course meal. These past two weeks especially were those days.

But with good reason! Trust me.

We went out to eat too much the rst week, and this week my crockpot seemed to really come in handy. I had my ranch pork chops in the freezer, ready to throw into a crockpot quickly. I typically use egg noodles with this recipe but didn’t have any. I saw I had three boxes of cheese tortellini in our chest freezer, so that’s what I used.

Honestly, it was so good! I don’t know why I didn’t think to do this before. Now, pay attention to this quick, easy recipe for later.

Another night consisted of putting some hot sausage in a crockpot with a jar of tomato sauce and my fresh-grown peppers with some sliced onions. Cook on high for four hours.

Then the other nights got lled in with Red Baron personal pizzas and leftovers!

Listen, it’s OK to have weeks like this.

I am gonna be upfront right now and tell you what I meant by leftovers. You know those ranch pork chops and hot sausage sammies I made? Well, we had three pork chops left and four hot sausages. I grabbed another box of cheesy tortellini out of our freezer and chopped up all the meat I had leftover. I sautéed them in a little olive oil spray to heat them in a skillet, boiled some tortellini, added the pasta to the meat with

Dante is a smart boy. He’s strong and capable and not afraid of anything – except nightmares, and he has those all the time. His mother knew that Dante needed help, so she introduced him to a few of his Choctaw ancestors, and then she sent him on a quest to learn about them, and about himself. This is a good book for a 5-to-9-year-old who’s searching for his place in the world, or a kid who wants to know where he came from.

Immigration has been a hot topic this year and you can’t help but notice, right? So read “Copland: A Story

About America” by Veronica Mang (Viking, $18.99) and get an introduction to Aaron Copland, who was born in Brooklyn more than a century ago. He and his family lived in a neighborhood full of immigrants and he eagerly saw how they changed America. Aaron loved music then – he loved it all his life – and his sense of style and the music he made ts in with this story of differences and similarities. Kids ages 6-to-9 will enjoy it.

On that same note, kids who love their tunes will want to own “Everything is Music” by Mirian Park (Blue Dot, $19.95). Read this book, then ask your child for silence and listen.

And if these aren’t enough reading material for your summer, check with your favorite librarian or bookseller.

Home(r) Again: Christopher Nolan Lands the Ship

H

ow does one write a mere 600 words about a lm like The Odyssey?

A movie that’s well nigh three hours long, rife with dazzling visuals and a larger-than-life cast featuring a dozen ma or stars. A movie helmed by a man who may now be the world’s most bankable director but who has herein made controversial changes in one of literature’s oldest and greatest sagas. In fact, it’s a tale that’s already been adapted in at least a dozen earlier movies, several

of them quite worthwhile.

Well, I suppose one starts by insisting that Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is very good indeed, it’s very, very good.

But it isn’t perfect.

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, the tale focuses on Odysseus, Ithacan king and hero of the Tro an War, as he ghts his way home through a dizzying array of monsters, mistakes, stormy seas, temptations and supernatural hostility and all the while, his wife waits for years, unsure if he is even alive while the

Though Robert Pattinson didn’t quite do it for me as chief scumbag Antinous, most of the cast is sensational.

Matt Damon’s Odysseus a role he calls his most Joseph W. physically challenging Smith III really deserves this year’s Best Actor.

But Tom Holland as the hero’s son, Telemachus is almost the best thing in this picture we literally watch him grow up through the story. His teary-eyed scene with the beggar and dog constitutes, for me, the movie’s strongest moment in particular, it highlights the way Nolan for all the impressive action, effects and real-life authenticity again and again simply nails the human element, the timeless emotional undertow of Homer’s beloved classic.

Cast-wise, I was also bowled over by Charlize Theron, whose nymph Calypso truly makes us believe that Odysseus could be seduced by her proffered dream of private peace and love. At age 50, Theron is still so mesmerizing that I don’t know why they didn’t ust cast her as Helen of Troy.

Speaking of which The actual casting of talented Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o as the face that launched a thousand ships

was one of the controversies along with trans actor Elliot Page formerly Ellen as Sinon, a minor character borrowed from Virgil’s later Aeneid.

And indeed, the multicultural casting perhaps mindful of new quotas for any lm hoping to get Oscar nominations is ust one aspect of the lm that can make it feel too woke and modern. There’s some very non-Homeric feminism Samantha Morton’s Circe wasn’t cutting it for me , and too much handheld camerawork plus awkward contemporary language the F-bomb, for instance and I’m pretty sure I heard at least one dude .

It’s frankly distracting I can’t imagine Mom or Dad ever crossing Homer’s lips.

And despite the strong performances ohn Leguizamo is also terri c, along with Anne Hathaway as Penelope and endaya as Athena one has to wonder why they couldn’t hire at least a couple of actual Greeks. Apparently, multiculturalism only goes so far.

But I’ve now devoted too much space to these issues. Because, as my movie-fan friend and I observed right afterward, The Odyssey is so good, so absorbing, so brilliantly lmed with its practical effects and very little CGI that all these concerns simply fade into the background when the credits start to roll.

Instead, you might hear yourself say, I think I’d like to see that again and maybe read the book.

I’m already planning on both.

Thanks to their resolution and pride and stamina, magic has been wrought, transforming

the huge tract north of Montgomery Pike into a beautiful playing field.

In the major phase of the operation, working 12 hours a day, the young men excavated 120,000 tons of earth and moved it as fill to the site of the playing field, creating a spacious plateau in which a diamond has been laid out and a field seeded and a grandstand and fence erected. Beyond the fence landscaped banks will be provided which will provide a vantage point similar to that of the dike at the Original Little League Field from which many thousands of fan can view the exciting games.

Scaling Compassion, Part 2: Using Epidemiology to Spread Care

ust to recap. In Part 1 of this article, we discussed that while our area is pretty awesome in many regards, the world is a little crazy right now. Thus, what we could all use is a little more compassion, or the ability to care about each other. That is, we notice someone in need or suffering, we want to help, and take action to do so. So, if we are zooming out for a minute and thinking really big, how

can we spread compassion in our town, county, state, country, etc.? We also talked about the idea that epidemiology might be the answer? In their Greater Good Magazine article How Do We Scale Up Compassion?, Researchers Amy Richards and David Addiss pose the question whether epidemiology, the science used to understand how disease is distributed and controlled in populations, can help us think about

compassion at the societal level. Their idea is that public health has tools for seeing patterns, nding clusters, testing interventions, and preventing future problems. So, why Dave not use the same Bellomo tools to help spread compassion?

Practically speaking, epidemiology starts by de ning a problem. If a public health team is tracking an illness, it needs to know what counts as a case.

A compassionate community needs the same clarity. Compassion is not just feeling sad, posting a slogan, or saying we care. It is attention plus action.

A neighbor checking on an isolated senior, a coach noticing a child who has gone quiet, a school responding quickly to bullying, or a church organizing support for a family in crisis are all examples of compassion made visible.

The second step is to measure the problem. This sounds impossible, but bear with me. Measurement can sound cold when we are talking about caring, but without it, leaders often rely on

guesses or whoever speaks the loudest.

A school, workplace, hospital, church, or town council can begin with simple questions. Who is being left out? Which families are struggling with food, transportation or housing? Where do people feel unseen? These questions create a compassionate map. They show where care is needed most, not just where it is easiest to provide.

The third step is mapping needs and action. Epidemiology is powerful because it reveals clusters that might otherwise stay hidden. The same logic can show where compassion should be organized. Maybe one neighborhood has more loneliness according to surveys or another has more youth violence. Maybe the food pantry is strong, but transportation is weak.

Once we compare needs with existing resources, gaps become easier to spot.

The fourth step is to build infrastructure that supports compassion. Compassion spreads when people are intentionally looking for need, have the desire to respond to it, and have the ability to act. For example, a workplace that encourages employees to report burnout and adjusts workloads when needed is more likely to produce a compassionate

Last, we need to ask, who among are the most vulnerable and who is being overlooked Without those questions, compassion becomes selective. We may notice people who look like us or live near us, while missing others in need of help because they go unnoticed.

A systems approach to compassion moves communities to pay attention to who are receiving resources and protection. A scaled approach looks at why suffering keeps happening and what needs to change so fewer people fall through the cracks.

A compassionate society cannot depend only on spontaneous acts of kindness. It needs information, leadership, policies, and relationships that make care more likely. It needs people trained to notice problems and groups designed to respond.

Like health, compassion is shaped by environments. If societies can map and interrupt the spread of disease, they can also learn to map and support the spread of care. That possibility is why an epidemiology of compassion matters and why our aim should be to build communities where caring is not accidental but expected.

culture than one that simply throws a pizza part for Employee Appreciation Day. A school that trains teachers to recognize distress and connects families with support has made compassion part of its operating system. In this way, compassion becomes less dependent on individuals and more built into the larger system.

Fifth, we need to identify the carriers of compassion. In public health, certain people, places, or habits spread illness. In a positive version of that idea, certain people spread care. The nurses who calm anxious patients, the pastors who comfort the grieving, the teachers who see potential. These are the people we should learn from because they are able to notice what is going on and who is suffering in our community. We need to ask how we can learn from them, what do they need, and how can our community adopt their habits?

At this point we need to get leaders on board. If leaders openly support helping others, their followers get behind it. If, however, leaders openly mock vulnerability, compassion diminishes. This applies at every level.

Parents, teachers, coaches, managers, elected o cials are all leaders that we

The Sawdust War of 1872

illiamsport, in the summer of 1872, was a city divided between unimaginable wealth and grinding poverty. The lumber barons controlled everything, from the massive sawmills along the river to the very coins that paid their workers. That summer, thousands of laborers decided they had endured enough. What unfolded over the next weeks would

become one of the most explosive yet frequently overlooked labor conflicts in American history, ultimately requiring the intervention of the state militia, the declaration of martial law, and a dramatic courtroom battle that reshaped early American labor laws.

By 1872, Williamsport had become a city of staggering wealth. The Susquehanna Boom, a massive system of river piers that trapped floating logs, allowed the city’s sawmills to process up to 300 million feet of lumber annually.

This immense industry minted dozens of millionaires who built lavish Victorian mansions overlooking the river.

The visible wealth seemed to suggest a thriving, prosperous community. The reality for thousands of workers told a different story entirely. Mill workers endured brutal, highly dangerous conditions. They worked 12 hours a day, six days a week, often for meager wages that averaged just one dollar fifty to one dollar seventy-five cents per day. Many mills paid their workers in company-issued tokens that could only be redeemed for overpriced goods at company-owned stores, trapping families in cycles of debt they could never escape.

In the summer of 1872, a wave of labor activism swept the nation, championing the Ten-Hour Movement.

Williamsport workers organized under the banner of the Labor Reform Union. They demanded a reduction of the workday from 12 hours to 10 hours, with no reduction in their daily pay. This was not a radical demand.

Workers wanted slightly more time with their families while maintaining their already meager income. On July 22, 1872, the strike officially began.

A small group of workers walked off the job at one mill, marching down the river to rally others. Within days, the movement swelled exponentially.

An estimated 3,000 to 4,000 workers joined the strike, effectively shutting down all 30 of Williamsport’s major sawmills. The city’s economic engine ground to a sudden, screeching halt.

The lumber barons flatly refused to negotiate. They viewed the workers’ demands as an existential threat to their profits and their authority over their workforce. As the shutdown dragged into its second week, tensions boiled over. On August 1, a group of striking workers, including many women and children carrying sticks and clubs, marched to the Filbert and Otto mill, where the owners were attempting to operate using strike breakers. A violent clash ensued. The strikers breached the mill gates, chased away the non-union workers, and physically shut down the machinery. Panicked by the workers’ resolve, the lumber barons and local officials claimed that a full-scale riot was underway. Williamsport Mayor Henry Mudge officially declared that the local police could no longer control the city. He immediately telegraphed

With the strike broken, the lumber barons sought retribution. More than 20 labor leaders were arrested and put on a highly publicized trial for conspiracy to raise wages and rioting. Governor Geary responded with overwhelming force. On August 2, 1872, hundreds of heavily armed troops from the Pennsylvania State Militia arrived in Williamsport by train.

The Governor declared martial law.

Troops set up camp along the river, mounted artillery pieces, and patrolled the streets with fixed bayonets. Gatherings of more than a few people were strictly banned. Under the shadow of military force, the strike was effectively crushed. Intimidated by the troops and

The Right Kind of Pressure

T

his article is for parents raising kids. I hope it gives you something to think about as you help prepare them for adulthood.

And if there are any kids reading this, I hope it gives you a little hope and direction.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure how to start writing this one. It made perfect sense in my head, but finding the right words wasn’t easy — so here goes.

When I was growing up, I was never worried about being the cool kid.

I played sports, and I loved competing, but when I left the field, I didn’t want ev-

ery conversation to be about baseball. I enjoyed doing other things too.

One lesson my parents taught me has stuck with me ever since. If you have to tell people how good you are, you probably aren’t that good.

That lesson has served me well in sports, in my career, and in life.

Another thing that wasn’t always easy was choosing not to do what everyone else was doing.

I stayed away from drinking and making choices I knew weren’t right. At times, that made me feel like an outsider.

It seemed like everyone around me was

doing those things, and because I wasn’t, I never had a huge circle of friends in high school.

Looking back now, I’m thankful for that.

Instead, I stayed close with my childhood friends and my girlfriend, who is now my wife. They cared about Jimmy making good decisions Webb III too, and those are the relationships that have lasted. Those friendships were built on trust, shared values, and genuinely enjoying each other’s company, not just finding something to do on a Friday night.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized something. Doing the right thing isn’t always the easiest choice. It usually isn’t the most popular choice either. But it is almost always the choice that prepares you for the future.

The habits you build as a teenager become the habits you carry into adulthood.

The friends you surround yourself with influence the person you become.

Don’t be afraid to be different. The right friends will find you.

And if you’re a parent, keep encouraging your kids to do the right thing, even when it isn’t the easy thing.

I also want to challenge parents with one more thought.

When I was growing up, there were plenty of parents who knew exactly what

their kids were doing. Some chose to look the other way. Others figured, “Kids will be kids.”

I don’t think that’s enough.

Be involved. Know who your kids are with. Know where they are. Check in on them. Hold your kids to a standard.

Looking back now, I’m thankful my parents did. Holding me to a high standard didn’t make me resent them. It made me respect them. It also made me never want to let them down.

I didn’t make good decisions because I was afraid of being punished. I made good decisions because I didn’t want to disappoint my parents.

Over time, their standards became my standards. I wanted to live up to them because I knew they expected the best from me.

There is one more thing my parents gave me that I hope Beau always has.

No matter what happened, I knew I could go to them. If I messed up, I wasn’t afraid to tell them. I didn’t feel like I had to hide it or cover it up. I went to them because I knew they would help me figure out how to make it right.

Set high standards. Hold your kids accountable. But never make them afraid to come to you.

Make it cool to do the right thing and be a lifegiver to people around you.

And despite the fact that he doesn’t completely understand the concept that Kondo so perfectly states in her books, he’ll respond emphatically that “Yes, this 50-year-old toaster still sparks joy for me.” And at that, I am at my wits’ end, reluctantly acknowledging that I live with a hoarder.

It’s not just the toaster he refused to part with after we recently purchased a new one. There are tiny whisks (that feature a bit of rust), coats and jackets that no longer t anyone, hordes of ragged, old towels in a heap in our garage, a 7-foot Christmas tree that we can no longer haul downstairs from the attic, worn-out sneakers and shoes that went out of style decades ago, and TWO faded 9-foot pool umbrellas.

God forbid that something would happen to one of those backups and we needed the second spare. There are also scores of plastic bags, newspapers,

because it highlights the dysfunction that lives here. I’ve heard of being prepared for the unexpected, but that’s ridiculous.

I must confess that some of the items he has so meticulously saved from the trash bin have proven to be useful on occasion, and it pains me greatly to admit that. Scraps of wood and metal along with snippets of wire and rogue screws have come in handy more than once. Further, he has resurrected various electrical appliances from the dead by replacing their cords, as I looked on in astonishment. One time he tried (and failed) to teach me how to strip a wire so that he could make an extension cord out of a piece that he was physically incapable of throwing away. I wish I were kidding. HE COULD NOT THROW IT AWAY. There is hope on the horizon, though. He recently informed me that he MIGHT discard the broken basket from our pool lter that we replaced with a new one.

He has to give it some serious thought rst, however.

hen it comes to saving things, I understand — especially if there’s an element of practicality or sentiment behind the decision. I’ve kept plenty of things from my past that are functional or have meant something to me, as I’ve expressed here in these pages. But I draw the line when the items in question are kept without any apparent reason other than, “It still works. Sort of.” Also, “I might need that someday.”

It’s no surprise those are my husband’s words. I hear them each time I attempt to convince him to throw something out already. Something past its prime. Something no longer useful or aesthetically pleasing. Something older than dirt. Of course, I use logic and common sense to argue my point. I appeal to the sense of joy he’ll undeniably feel once he recognizes his world will be less cluttered after he scraps the bit of whateverness he’s hanging on to the stuff that clogs our closets, basement, and garage.

Over the years I’ve tried, and failed miserably, to get him to embrace the

bits of cloth, and a metric ton of empty cardboard boxes. Oh, my hell, the boxes!

We certainly can’t part with perfectly good boxes.

What’s more, my husband won’t even Melinda entertain the thought donating his Wentzel of impressive collection of 21 wooden baseball bats and a slew of gloves and catcher’s mitts — a veritable shrine to the sport if ever there was one. Our home also still houses his highchair, which has seen better days, and his toy trucks — which are metal, so you know they’re ancient.

Weirder still, four of his baby teeth are currently stowed inside a small box on his dresser, along with two stainless steel screws from a foot surgery that occurred over 26 years ago. That’s just plain creepy if you ask me — on par with keeping one’s gallbladder or appendix.

Need I even mention the deluge of twist ties in our kitchen — in case we suddenly need to secure 487 loaves of bread? I think I do need to mention it,

L

ast year, a northern Lycoming County landowner whom I have known for quite some time approached me about helping him design and develop a food plot.

He owns 120 acres, which included 50 acres of open fallow elds and a wooded area of about 70 acres that stretched up a hillside and across a mountain top, where several other large properties bordered it.

After cruising the property and considering the terrain, we decided on a location at the top in the woods, which would require dropping numerous red oak, chestnut oak, maple, and black birch trees, resulting in an opening of about one acre.

There were a good many white oak trees on top as well, but we selected an area where we could avoid cutting any of them, since their acorns were a preferred food source for wildlife.

The plot would be oval in shape, with additional trees dropped on the western side to provide added sunlight in the evening hours.

Once the trees were dropped and cut

for rewood, the remaining tops would be chipped. The mountain laurel and other brush were small enough that they could be chopped up with a brush hog.

That was the plan to create the opening for the food plot.

Work began in early June, over several weekends, as a crew of friends and neighbors joined in to drop the trees and cut and split rewood. The remaining tops were chipped in a process that took about 6 hours, producing several piles of chips that would decay and later be used as mulch for any seedlings that might be added to the outside edges of the plot.

Next, the stumps that remained had to be addressed. Old stumps from trees that were cut years earlier were able to be removed with the front-end loader of a 50-horsepower tractor, but the fresh tree stumps would not budge. These were trimmed as ush to the ground as possible, and then covered with a layer of 46-0-0 nitrogen to expedite the decaying process.

Limbs and logs left over from a timbering 15 years earlier were gathered and moved into several large piles along the border of the clearing, and placed in such a fashion as to help direct the ow of game entering the food plot. The

from the Whitetail Institute could be added later to create a fall food source that would coincide with the upcoming archery and ri e seasons. As a nal step, the entire seed bed was tamped down using an old crow’s-foot cultipacker pulled behind the 4-wheeler.

That nal step occurred in the second week of July, and left only one thing to aid the process of creating a successful food plot — rain. Lo and behold, the very next day, blue skies gave way in the afternoon to a thunderstorm that provided an hour of steady and moderate rain that would jump-start the growth of the seeds! And with that, a food plot was born! This fall, hybrid chestnut and apple tree seedlings, along with fruit-bearing shrubs, will be added around the edges of the opening that will provide a variety of food for wildlife throughout the coming years.

openings between the piles were left near large oak trees where ladder stands could eventually be erected. A small tractor pulling a stone rake was then used to clear the smaller limbs and debris, level the seed bed, and ll the holes created by the stump removal. The landowner had considered piling all of this debris into one huge pile in the center of the plot and burning it. Still, safety, manpower, and liability issues indicated that burning would not be a viable option.

A soil sample had been taken before the project had begun. Since the existing soil was of poor quality, the landowner had two large loads of topsoil and mushroom soil mix delivered and spread over the entire area using a tractor with a frontend loader and a stone rake. Pelletized nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, and lime were spread and worked in with the use of a 4-foot drag harrow pulled behind a 4-wheeler.

Seeding was done by hand, since there was less than an acre to cover. First, buckwheat seed was applied over the entire plot, then some leftover clover seed was distributed (while it is not the ideal time to apply clover seed, it was a good opportunity to use up the seed).

Needless to say, I will continue to be on the lookout for those poults that will add to our fall ocks and for those developing antlers still covered in velvet.

Of course, I’m also interested in seeing newborn fawns as we move into the summer days, as that will help maintain a healthy deer herd, but, to be honest, I get a bit more excited when I spot those developing antlers still in velvet.

Antlers generally begin to grow in March or April, and in their early stages of development, they are covered with a skin called velvet.

This velvet is covered with soft hairs and contains blood vessels which supply the necessary nutrients for the growing antlers. Come August or early September, antler growth ceases, and the bucks begin to shed or rub off the velvet.

Of course, we hunters are quick to be on the hunt for those small trees or saplings where the bucks have been rubbing and scraping off the velvet.

What’s exciting right now is spotting those bucks still in velvet and trying to evaluate what those antlers are going to look like when the fall arrives.

I’ve been fortunate to see several bucks in velvet in my travels and on several cameras. I recently spotted

Volunteers: Youth Sports MVP

I

t is estimated that each year, half a million volunteers around the globe support the Little League Baseball and Softball programs.

Fittingly, when Little League expanded the number of teams participating in the World Series in 2001 and needed a second stadium, they chose the name Volunteer Stadium. In a few weeks, that stadium will once again welcome so many who are honored by its name.

While that event will glow in the spotlight of international attention,

earlier this month, just a long home run away, volunteers of the South Williamsport Little Mountaineer Little League worked tirelessly, absent from the television cameras, to do what volunteers do — provide young people with a positive experience.

The event was the 2026 Pennsylvania State 8-10-year-old Softball Tournament, held at the South Williamsport Community Park Complex.

back to even just the planning of the tournament from the get-go. We knew we had to crown a champion no later than Tuesday, July 21. We did build in a day or two for weather, and as it turned out, we needed that cushion.

In our planning, smoke was not one of the types of weather we considered,” Engel explained.

“With the heat, one of our biggest concerns was that our umpires, players, coaches, and everyone involved had enough water. We do not have running water at the eld, but we brought in extra jugs of water, cooling towels, and extra ice.

“When the smoke rolled in, we checked with Little League headquarters, but there was no protocol available. We were advised to follow the County safety directions. We proceeded to set up a communication directive with all team managers, asking them to reach out immediately if they have health and safety concerns. All the teams indicated they wanted to continue to play, and we were able to work our way through and get the games in.

“Then the weather forecast gave us rain on Saturday, so those games were moved to Sunday. Mid Valley came out of the loser’s bracket to force an extra game, which was played on Monday with Bullskin Little League,

“Those various conditions beyond our control made for some long hours and tough decisions, but we were thrilled to have this opportunity to host the tournament. The fans who traveled here were great. They continued to compliment us on how gorgeous this complex is and how much work they could tell we put into it. They were especially appreciative of the ongoing communication efforts we extended to everyone so that people were up to date as to schedule changes and issues.

“But even when we had those moments when we couldn’t play, the teams were unable to enjoy themselves.

Liberty Arena provided arcade passes to some of the teams. Little League provided tours of the museum. We reached out to local businesses, and they provided things for them to do during their downtime as well.

“I was fortunate to follow a niece who played for the South Williamsport Major Girls’ team in 2019 that went to the World Series in Portland, Oregon. We traveled with that team along its march to the Series, and I got to experience what that was like.

What I especially remembered was how special these tournaments made things for the girls. When we had the

The most important piece of equipment on any kayaking trip is your Personal Flotation Device. There are several different types of PFDs, but a Type III is the only way to go. You should look for a vest that is comfortable, ts well but not too tightly, and helps you stay a oat. It is required that every kayaker has a PFD in their boat.
