Smoke Happens

I

hope that, as you’re reading this, the beautiful summertime sunrises, sunsets, and blue skies have returned. At press time, almost 900 wildfires were burning in Canada, to go along with more than a dozen across Northern Minnesota that were providing our local smoke screen. As the smoke was hugging the ground and I was working in my yard, you could actually smell the pine, spruce, and hemlock burning. It reminded me of a campfire someone had tossed soft wood into. Definitely not recommended for cooking over, and it leaves a smell that’s hard to get washed out of everything. I have even heard pilots report that this type of smoke leaves a film on their windshields. Well, when smoke happens, there often isn’t much you can do about it. Work through it, do the best job you can, and find the positive. As I took a break while doing that yard work, I looked up at what I can only describe as an apocalyptic sun. It was an odd orange/red color, much smaller appearing, and almost drowned out by the smoke. It triggered the thought to spin this glass half full by continuing to honor those who protect

and take care of us this July during our Nations semi-quincentennial. So, a tip of my Webb Weekly hat with the American ag on the side to all our firefighters, paramedics, and emergency services personnel. When people may be having the worst day of their lives, it is these heroes who run into the ames, smoke, or the scene of the accident and help in any way possible. I got quite an education traveling with my Father when he was borough fire chief in South Williamsport. Although I was young, I learned about the daily challenges that those who volunteered their time faced during all hours of the day and night. I also learned how blessed we are by people would do these jobs no matter the circumstance, putting others’ lives ahead of their own. As it has been decades since my Father was involved, the mental health and well-being of these men and women who deal daily with somebody’s tragedy has been made much more apparent and finally made a priority. I wish, in honor of my Father, I could send all the firefighters, paramedics, and emergency service personnel to

the baseball game of their choice. This would be a fitting honor for each. I will keep with my America 250 theme in this week’s All-American Crosscutter Giveaway for these special folks. Please Jim Webb Jr. give me a call or text at 570-337-0755 and win a night out at Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. The first four to reach me will receive four tickets and $40 in Cutters’ Cash to attend the upcoming game of their choice. Good luck, and remember, it’s for firefighters, paramedics, and emergency services folks. As far as Crosscutter baseball, there are 14 home games left this season, and then their appearance in the MLB Draft League Championship at Historic Bowman Field. A special shoutout this week to Sarah at Crosscutterland, who takes care of everything in the ticket booth and much more. She helps Webb Weekly make all these great giveaways happen. I am proud to say we will again be teaming up with Gabe, Rashawn, and the Williamsport Crosscutters in promoting the MLB Draft League Championship.

Webb Weekly will have much more about this when the calendar ips to August. With the championship game being in September. One last note on Crosscutters baseball, if you’re wondering when those last 14 home games are, I have plenty of wallet-sized schedules still available at my o ce. The schedule includes the following coupons: a $10 large pizza with one topping at Scorz and 50% off 1 hour of bowling at Kaos Fun Zone, both of which can be found at the Liberty Arena on Hepburn Street. A 50% off admission coupon for the World Little League Museum in Southside. And finally, a 10% off your entire check coupon at Eat and Run Catering and Restaurant. Please see all the coupons for complete details. In closing things out this week, what a great cover featuring the 2026 Elk Expo. I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shoutout to the All-American, outdoor-loving husband and wife duo of Jay and Joyce Foreman. They have actively supported the Keystone Elk Country Alliance and our Great Nation throughout their lifetimes. I wish you great health and many more years of sharing Penns Woods together. God Bless America.

Reading is Fundamental By Steph Noviello

F

or generations, parents assumed that if they sent their children to school, reading would simply take care of itself. Today, many families are realizing that’s no longer something they can take for granted. Whether you subscribe to conspiracy theories or not, there is no denying that reading proficiency has declined, and many teachers, parents, and literacy experts have raised concerns about whether too many children are leaving elementary school without the strong reading foundation they need. The reasons are widely debated — teaching methods, learning disruptions, increased screen time, curriculum changes, staffing shortages, and more. Whatever the causes, one fact remains: Your child’s first and most influential teacher is you. That’s not meant to put more pressure on parents. It’s meant to remind you that your daily habits at home can have an enormous impact — sometimes even more than what’s happening in the classroom. There is no app, worksheet, or educational toy that replaces sitting down with your child and reading. Fifteen or twenty minutes a day may not seem like much, but over the years it becomes hundreds of hours of language, vocabulary, imagination, and connection. Even after your child learns to read independently, don’t stop.

Read chapter books together. Take turns reading pages. Laugh at funny parts. Cry during the sad ones. Make books part of your family’s story. Children who read because they have to often stop reading as soon as the assignment is finished. Children who read because they want to become lifelong learners. That doesn’t mean every book has to be a classic. If your child loves dinosaurs, find dinosaur books. If they’re obsessed with football, let them read football magazines. Graphic novels? Great. Mysteries? Wonderful. Comic books? Absolutely. The goal isn’t to raise a literary critic. The goal is to raise someone who picks up a book because they’re curious. Our children are growing up in a world that constantly competes for their attention. Notifications. Videos. Games. Doom scrolling. None of those things are inherently bad, but they make sustained attention harder to build. Reading asks children to slow down, imagine, remember details, make connections, and think deeply. Those are mental muscles that need regular exercise. When your child finishes reading, don’t settle for “Did you like it?” Ask: – Why do you think the character made that decision? – What would you have done differently? – What surprised you?

– What lesson did the story teach? Those conversations build comprehension, reasoning, and confidence. If your child seems to guess at words instead of sounding them out, struggles to read simple books, or becomes increasingly frustrated, don’t assume they’ll simply catch up. Ask questions, work with their teacher, and seek extra support if needed. Early intervention can make a tremendous difference. Kids notice far more than we think. If every adult in the house spends evenings glued to a phone, children learn that’s what free time looks like. If they regularly see parents reading books, newspapers, recipes, or articles, they learn that reading is simply part of life. Reading isn’t just another academic subject. It’s how we understand contracts. Follow medical instructions. Learn new skills. Evaluate information. Recognize misinformation. Make informed decisions. It’s how we enjoy stories and connect with other people. Strong readers have more tools for navigating everyday life. It’s easy to become discouraged by headlines about declining test scores or debates over education. But parents are not powerless. Read with your children. Talk with them. Encourage their curiosity. Protect their attention. Celebrate their progress. The greatest gift you can give your child isn’t just the ability to read words on a page — it’s the ability to understand the world, think critically, continue learning throughout life, and discover ideas that might change who they become.

“Elk Expo” Slated for July 25 and 26 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he celebration of an interesting and unique creature in a county named for it is one of the main ideas behind the “Elk Expo” held in the appropriately named Elk County, the weekend of July 25 and 26. It is located at the Elk Country Visitors Center in Benezette, Pa. The Elk Expo, started in 2001 by the Keystone Elk Country Alliance, has since been celebrated as the largest celebration of Elk East of the Mississippi River. Taking place this year on Saturday, July 25th, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, July 26th, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., the event is dedicated to bringing together elk enthusiasts, hunters, conservationists, outdoor families, and industry professionals for a weekend of education and entertainment. It offers FREE Seminars all weekend long, including Bass Fishing, Rifle Accuracy, Dutch Oven Cooking, Pennsylvania Game Commission K-9 Demonstrations, Snake Programs, and more. A few more highlights of the Elk Expo include the drawing of both the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Key-

stone Elk Country Alliance Elk Tag Raffle drawings, along with a meet and greet with Punxsutawney Phil and even a chance to spot BIGFOOT. More than 120 vendors will be in attendance, ranging from hunting and fishing outfitters, wildlife artisans, taxidermists, concealed carry companies, to e-bikes and more. This “Family Friendly” event is great for all ages. According to organizers of the Keystone Elk Country Alliance’s annual Elk Expo, the event has become an important contributor to economic development in the Elk County region, particularly by strengthening tourism, supporting local businesses, and promoting long-term investment in the area’s outdoor recreation economy. It is an event that no doubt has placed Elk County on the tourism map. It highlights this interesting and unique area that features unspoiled natural beauty. “I look forward to the interaction between the guests and the vendors. I love to see the relationships built between the two. This may just be a one-time sale or help to create a long-time customer and friend.” Morgan Lovenduski, Director of Marketing, Keystone Elk

Our efforts of wise habitat enhancement are spreading across Elk Country. We are working closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Game Commission to enrich habitat for elk and other wildlife through mowing, planting and other projects. We also have expanded these efforts by working with private land owners on a number of projects. We are committed to working with our partners and regional and local communities to make the Elk Country Visitor Center a success. Our lead volunteer group has many years of experience raising private dollars to enhance elk country across the US. instead of investing in the one right in front of us. But this quote says the opposite. It says to double down. Triple down. Keep showing up. You are stacking invisible gains. Whether it is your marriage, your faith, raising your kids, your career, or your health, the greatest things in life are usually built one day at a time. Our world is obsessed with instant gratification. But the best things in life are almost never instant. The last quote is from Tim Tebow, and I hope it helps put life into perspective on the days when you need it most. “I want to be someone who was known for bringing faith, hope, and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.” Tim was asked how he handles pressure while playing baseball, and I thought his answer was incredible. When we are going through di cult times, our first thought is usually, How is t is going to a ect me Or — ow do I get t ro g t is What if we changed the question?

Montoursville 570-326-7241

What if instead we asked, o can I el Or — ose da can I make a little brig ter During a di cult season and while answering a tough question, Tebow chose to ip the script. Instead of focusing on himself, he focused on how he could serve and encourage others. Sometimes it helps to stop focusing on ourselves and start looking for someone else who needs encouragement. Be a life-giver! Sometimes the simplest thoughts end up changing us the most. So I want to challenge you. Pick up a good book. Listen to a podcast. Read a quote that makes you stop and think. Do not just consume it. Digest it. Re ect on it. Then ask yourself one simple question: How can this make me a better person for the people around me? nd let s consider ow we ma s r one anot er on toward love and good deeds, not giving meeting toget er... b t enco raging one anot er. ebrews

summer weekend in Montoursville brought together far more than youth soccer. Families, volunteers, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations united for the third annual Kicks 4 Canines, helping make the tournament’s largest year yet while supporting a meaningful community cause.

Hosted at McCall Middle School by UnitedGoals USA in partnership with the Montoursville Lady Warriors Soccer Program, this year’s event welcomed a record 66 teams, including 57 from Pennsylvania and nine from New York, for two days of 5v5 competition featuring boys and girls from U9 through U16. local youth soccer program alongside visiting clubs from across the region. Eleven divisions crowned champions, while hundreds of players competed in an atmosphere centered on sportsmanship, community, and fun. Behind the scenes, dozens of volunteers from the Montoursville Lady Warriors Soccer Program dedicated countless hours to preparing the fields, maintaining the complex, operating concessions, and helping the tournament run smoothly.

Local businesses also played an important role in the event’s success. UnitedGoals USA recognized KVS Computers, RDF Tax Services LLC, Woodlands Bank, Mr. Chilaquil, Faddie’s Pizza & Ice Cream, Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, and FastBridge Fiber for their support as community partners. As participation continues to grow each year, Kicks 4 Canines has become more than just a tournament on the summer calendar. It has evolved into a community event that celebrates local soccer and creates opportunities to give back. “This weekend wouldn’t happen without our volunteers, sponsors, o cials, coaches, and the families who choose to spend their weekend with us, Gorini said. We’re thankful for everyone who continues to support this event and help us strengthen our soccer community.

he Lycoming County Commissioners gathered to address several interconnected issues affecting the region, from youth violence to economic development to the practical mechanics of keeping government operating smoothly. Commissioner Scott Metzger opened the discussion by addressing the recent shooting near Williamsport’s Memorial Park and the visible spike in violent crime among local teenagers. Rather than relying solely on law enforcement, he called for a collaborative approach involving parents, school administrators, and community leaders working together on prevention and intervention. The challenge reflects a shift in rural communities across the country. Places like Lycoming County once remained largely insulated from youth gun violence, but that reality has changed. Parks that families have used safely for generations now require attention to security and community presence. The commissioners recognize that addressing this requires investment in youth programs, mentorship opportunities, and creating genuine connections between young

people and their communities. This is not a simple problem with a single solution, but it demands deliberate response. The board also took the unusual step of directly addressing rumors surrounding the redevelopment of the former Lycoming Mall, specifically the Bass Pro Shops project. Local speculation had grown about what was actually happening at the site. The commissioners explicitly confirmed that no taxpayer funds were given to private developers, clearing away a misconception that had circulated. More elaborate conspiracy theories had emerged in neighboring Muncy and township meetings, claiming that a secret casino was being planned. The commissioners addressed these claims directly, providing factual information about what the project actually involves. This situation illustrates how information travels in the digital age. Rumors spread quickly, and distinguishing between legitimate public concerns and unfounded speculation requires effort. Economic development projects generate questions, and those questions deserve answers grounded in fact rather than speculation. By speaking clearly about what is happening and what is

centers. Artificial intelligence data centers are actively exploring rural Pennsylvania for development sites, and the county is working to update its 1991 zoning ordinance before projects arrive. These facilities have genuine operational requirements that affect local communities. A modern data center consumes significant amounts of water and electricity. They operate continuously, which means ongoing noise from mechanical and cooling systems. The commissioners are establishing clear zoning standards so that communities can make deliberate choices about where these facilities can be built rather than discoverSee COUNTY HALL on P age 1 4

Once a data center is built and operating, changing course becomes extremely difficult. The 180-day ordinance rewrite reflects the commissioners’ understanding that establishing standards now provides protection that becomes nearly impossible to implement later. Communities in other regions have faced decisions about data center development with limited options for controlling placement or op-

erational standards. Lycoming County is attempting to learn from that experience. The commissioners also discussed a shift to advance payment for residents accessing property records. This change emerged from ongoing disputes between the commissioners and the County Recorder about funding for record-keeping systems. These operational disagreements directly affect citizens trying to conduct real estate transactions or access public documents for business purposes. A resident purchasing proper-

The commissioners are working to address each one thoughtfully rather than ignoring problems in the hope they resolve themselves. The public forum remains the space where these conversations happen openly. Citizens can witness how their elected officials work through challenges and make decisions that affect the community. This transparency allows the public to understand not just what decisions are made, but why those decisions matter and what alternatives were considered.

The advance payment system attempts to work around the larger structural problem while the dispute is resolved. It is not ideal, but it ensures that residents can still access the documents they need. Throughout the meeting, the commissioners demonstrated engagement with multiple challenges simultaneously. Welcome to My World…

Grave Matters

t’s inevitable — we’ll all die. Sometime. We just hope that it’s not too soon, or at least I hope that. As Jim Morrison of the Doors once famously remarked, “No one here gets out alive,” and I don’t think any truer words could’ve ever been spoken. Regardless of how logical this statement appears to be and how it would seemingly inspire preparedness, few of us actually act upon it by choosing to prearrange our own funerals/memorials. It makes perfect sense to do so, though, because it lessens the toll that a death takes on our families both financial and emotional. The burden placed upon loved ones is undeniable in that deep in the midst of grief, dozens upon dozens of snap decisions must be made following such an unfortunate event. I didn’t even know if my parents wanted to be cremated and had to rely on guessing — because we never talked about it face to face. It wasn’t spelled out in their wills, so I had little to go on. My mother-in-law, by contrast, had every minute detail planned down to

R FLOWE TS E U Q U BO

which specific hymns were included in her service. She wore a pink dress as I recall — one that our twins, who were only six at the time, placed tissues inside its sleeves, because Grandma would never be without tissues. At any rate, I give her a lot of credit for taking so much off our plates by planning ahead. So, after a great deal of discussion, debate and pure angst, I finally convinced my husband to take the necessary steps to prearrange our ceremonies. To say that it was a tall order is an understatement. I practically had to drag him to the funeral home. Truth be told, it was hard for both of us. No one likes to think about dying and what will happen in the aftermath. It’s certainly not a popular topic, at least not in the conversations I’ve been known to hold. It forced us to think about and answer questions neither one of us had ever before considered. Like what type of box did we want our ashes to be displayed in? I had no idea. Neither did he. Also, which particular ower would we prefer to adorn said box? Again, I was clueless.

S WA EEDLES TE R MELS ON

FARM MARKET

My husband loves snapdragons because he has a habit of making them “sing” at funerals. Macabre, I know. I love tiger lilies, but would it remind me of the sad fact that the deer Melinda in our neighborhood Wentzel habitually devour the tiger lilies in my lawn, thereby making everyone even sadder? In the end, I decided that it really didn’t matter. Because I’d be dead. Then there was the whole obituary undertaking an insufferable writing task that made us both beyond uncomfortable. I mean who wants to do that? It’s nearly impossible to jot down what was notable and decidedly significant in the span of a life an accounting of one’s entire existence in just a handful of words. It’s a humbling experience to say the least. I discovered that it’s di cult to choose what to include and what not to include. I tried to think of what might be meaningful for people to read — what might those I knew like to learn about me. What’s more, since the obituaries have been written for the most part, our kids

won’t have to deal with that or decisions about gravesites or tombstones since my husband and I have decided to have our ashes placed in our church columbarium — alongside some people we truly adored. So, there won’t be any trudging to the cemetery in all sorts of weather, or feeling obliged to place owers there on holidays or any other time. Nor will our kids struggle with choosing our burial clothing. We came into this world naked — and we’ll go out naked. Thankfully, this whole process was made simpler by our Preneed Counselor, Stephanie, at Maneval Allen Redmond Funeral Home. She walked us through some really di cult topics and advised us how to proceed in the preplanning of our ceremonies with both competence and compassion. Fortunately, there are a host of wonderful funeral homes in the Williamsport area that specialize in preplanning. Maneval is one of many. Now that that is handled, we can get on with life and place our grave matters behind us. Welcome to my world. It’s where I live (facing the inevitable). Visit me there at www.melindawentzel.com. make them too soon, or they get eaten or stale. (Yeah, you can freeze them, though, too! That’s an option.) It’s gotta be that prime time right before Christmas for fresh ones, and it always seems like there are last-minute gifts to get, tons of wrapping, all while wanting to live on Candy Cane Lane for the season. The struggle is real! For the past two years, I have been making different Christmas candies (with one or two cookies), and it has honestly worked out so well. I have a fun recipe I am going to share with you at Christmas, but for now, I am going to give you my crockpot candy recipe. It is so darn easy, and everyone really seems to love them! You could make them for fall; you don’t have to wait for Christmas. They just make the prettiest little gifts, but you just can’t make them ahead of time. But as easy as it is!? You don’t need to! More details below. And hey, if anyone out there has any pull with the wonderful folks on Summer Street at Christmastime. Candy Cane Lane. Can you please tell them how much Kenzy and I miss Santa, with his hiney on fire and the reindeer blowing it out with a fire extinguisher? It’s been two years since we have seen them out, and they are just our favorites! We look for them every year. Your Christmasloving journalist would really appreciate it! Thank you!

Fall Trends 2026

I

know it’s been sweltering, and we are hopefully all in the throes of summer adventure, however if you haven’t started planning for fall by now, you’re already behind. I say this as a person who found herself buying decorative Halloween pillows on July 12th. So yes, here in July with 90°+ days, I’ve already started looking towards autumn fashion and fun. Here’s a rundown of the upcoming trends for fall 2026. Each season typically sees a handful of colors trending, and colors are a low-stakes means of incorporating a trend into your personal style. For this autumn, those colors are regal purple, scarlet, fuchsia, and punchy pink. For the everyday outfitter, I’d recommend picking one of these bold tones to either ground your look with complementary muted pieces or wear in a statement piece or garment. For those more experienced outfitters, you can definitely play around with pairing pieces from two or three shades in one ensemble. For that latter approach, don’t sleep on cosmetics to

combine color. A fuchsia lip, a bold purple sweater, and a scarlet red skirt hit the season’s dynamic aesthetic. From color to fabric, with the changing season, it’s a return to texture. Summer is all cotton and linen, and keeping it simple to beat the heat. When the leaves change, we swing into knits, wools, tweeds, and velvets. You probably already have garments in these materials. If you’re looking for an upgrade or a refresh, check out the NYDJ Velveteen Tuxedo Jacket from Nordstrom. It comes in “wild currant,” which matches the colors above and can be layered with a blouse and jeans or over a wool shift, like Quince’s Italian Wool Sleeveless Dress in basic grey, navy, or black. For tweed, I’m team herringbone hands down, and I like to start with the menswear section of the thrift store for tweedy blazers. I also prowl around Etsy and Poshmark for tweed pieces. However, if second-hand is not your style, then check out Aqua’s Tweed Jacket at Bloomingdale’s for a classically silhouetted suiting in this

fall-friendly fabric. Speaking of fabric, of course, just about every season has a denim trend, and for this upcoming fall, lighter washes are trending upward with a more lived-in, retro Bernadette feel. Now, my idea Ulsamer of retro is styles of the 70’s, the current offering of light denim feels retro in a 90’s way. Levi’s Cinch Baggy jeans look exactly like a pair I had circa 1997, especially when styled with Converse sneakers and a baby tee. Yikes! Well, fashion is cyclical; will I be rocking light-wash denim in a 1990’s skateresque silhouette? No, I leave that for those who did not live through the original cycle of that particular style. However, lighter-wash jackets and skirts, like Gap’s Denim Crop Swing Jacket and Seamed Button-Front Maxi Skirt, are much more my speed for the start of fall. Another autumnal staple that goes through trend cycles is sweaters, and this fall, the cardigan is king. And not just any cardigans, but candy-colored

cardigans. As the days get darker, people tend to gravitate toward darker colors and tones. However, this trend of bright and pastel cardis is pushing people away from boring neutrals and into a more cheerful state of mind. So, consider Everlane’s Cropped Cardigan in Deep Pink as a therapeutic addition to your fall wardrobe. On the ip side of pastel knitwear is the cardigan with a bit of quirk. Autumn is the perfect season for charming novelty prints and graphics. For a vintage-y take, check out Old Navy’s Seaside Cotton Tie-Front Cardigan featuring an attached tie and rose print that reads grandma chic, but in a good way. For a more sophisticated option, there’s Lilly Pulitzer’s Maralisa Jacquard Cardigan in pink with a oral and sunshine design, perfect for the transitional time as summer slowly gives way to fall. These are just a handful of accessible trends to start thinking about adding to your personal style as we head toward a new season. There are many more out there, so this is by no means an exhaustive list. But a start, I mean, “layering” can be its own separate article.

“Ice Cream Queen: Flavors from Black America’s Past, Present & Future” by Lokelani Alabanza c.2026, W.W. Norton $29.99 264 pages

Y

our tongue can barely stay behind your teeth. Is it Rocky Road that’s tempting you, or chocolate chip cookie dough? Maybe something with caramel on top, or just plain vanilla, dressed up in a rainbow of sprinkles. Have you ever had

a bad ice cream cone on a hot summer’s day? Probably not – so dip into the new book “Ice Cream Queen” by Lokelani Albanza, and have a taste. For nearly three centuries, says Albanza, “African American hands have been touching sugar.” Planting it, harvesting it, processing it, every step was loaded with possible danger, loss of limb, and loss of life. Sugar is the first ingredient for ice cream, which was first made some 1,500 years ago but which didn’t arrive in this country until around 1744. Thirty years after that, America’s first ice cream parlor was opened in New York City, and it was a hit. Take note, though, and stress the word “parlor.”

An ice cream shop was a totally unacceptable place for unchaperoned ladies. A parlor was completely fine. Writing about memories of her grandma’s stash of ice cream, Albanza recalls enjoying it after a good Southern meal cooked by the Tennessean woman. In her career- ourney, Albanza learned about other Black cooks and Black cookbooks, “And then I found Sarah Estell.” From roughly 1840, until the Civil War, Estell, a Black woman, owned and ran an ice cream “saloon” in Nashville, serving ice cream she made. Known locally as the “Ice Cream Queen,” Estell seemed to disappear after 1865. Like her “North Star,” Estell, Albanza makes unusual kinds of ice cream. In this book, you’ll find a glossary of terms, lists of equipment needed, and directions for different bases to get you started. There are recipes for basic avors, Parmesan, cream cheese & pepper jelly, burnt almond, and marshmallow You can have blueberry ice cream, cranberry-cherry vodka, summer corn, and more. But why stop there? Says Albanza, “I have yet to come across one person who doesn’t like ice cream. Not one.” So what’s your preference? A wa e cone, a regular cone, or in a bowl? Sprinkles or not and okay, now you want some ice cream but first, check out Ice Cream Queen. The thing you’ll notice about this book is that it’s so happy. From the “birth of ice cream,” to tales of notable people in frozen-concoction history, to recipes for

kids and kids-at-heart, this is one of those books that cooks will love but it’s not just for them. Author Lokelani Alabanza satisfies everyone, from historians to foodies, with step-by-step, easy-to-try instructions, so you can create tasty foundations for whatever avor you might want to try. There’s even some encouragement for a little experimentation of your own. Glossy photos will make your mouth water while you’re smiling big. Summertime can be a scorcher, and you know what cools you off best? Yep, so find this book, invest in a few tools, and be the hit of the neighborhood. For that, a book like “Ice Cream Queen” can’t be licked.

ummer is one of the busiest times of year for travel. Whether heading to the beach, visiting family, camping, taking a cruise, or traveling internationally, a little planning can help prevent common illnesses that can quickly derail a trip. While many travel-related illnesses are mild, some can lead to dehydration or the need for medical care, especially for young children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems. Plan Ahead Before You Go For international travel, health preparation should begin several weeks before departure. Some vaccines or preventive medications need time to work, and recommendations can vary by destination, activities, medical history, and length of stay. Pre-travel consultations are available and tailored to a traveler’s health status and destination, including guidance on immunizations, medications, safety precautions, and what to do if illness develops during or after travel. Even for domestic trips, make sure routine vaccines are up to date, pack enough prescription medication for the full trip, and bring basics such as hand sanitizer, sunscreen, insect repellent, fever reducers, and oral rehydration solution or electrolyte

packets. Food and Water Safety Matter Traveler’s diarrhea is one of the most common travel-related illnesses. Risk is higher in areas where access to safe drinking water and sanitation may be limited. Choose foods that are cooked and served hot, avoid food that has been sitting out, drink beverages from factory-sealed containers when water safety is uncertain, avoid ice if it may have been made with unsafe water, and wash hands often with soap and water. Fresh produce can carry germs if contaminated water was used during growing, harvesting, processing, or preparation. When traveling, raw fruits and vegetables are safest when washed with clean water and peeled by the person eating them. If there is any doubt about water quality, cooked foods are usually the safer choice. Hydration is also important. Anyone who develops diarrhea while traveling should drink plenty of fluids. Oral rehydration solutions can help replace fluids and electrolytes. What to Know About Cyclospora One current summer health topic is cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite called Cyclospora. Cases often increase in the spring and summer, and public health officials have been monitoring reported cases in multiple

states, including Pennsylvania. Cyclospora spreads when a person eats food or drinks water contaminated with the parasite. Symptoms typically begin about a week after exposure and may include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, gas, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, and, less commonly, low-grade fever or vomiting. Symptoms can last for days to weeks if untreated and may come and go. Health care providers may need to order specific stool testing to detect Cyclospora. People should contact a health care provider if diarrhea is severe, lasts more than a couple of days, follows recent travel, or is accompanied by signs of dehydration, fever, bloody stools, persistent vomiting, or significant weakness. he hill climbing contest of the Williamsport Automobile Club, the first race of its kind ever held, in this locality, was successfully car-

ried out Saturday afternoon and without any more serious accident than the casting of a tire by the victorious machine. The winner was the big Matheson car which was sent here by the Matheson Company under the

charge of expert drivers to show what it could do. The local agency for this machine has only recently been taken by Rothfuss and Howard and in their interest the Matheson people put forth their best efforts. The cars were handled by their best experts and where stripped for racing. The local machines were handled by local drivers and were not stripped, the local agents of other makes preferring to let the public see what the machines would do as roadsters, with all the boxes on,

rather than racing machines. Another feature was the racing of machines of all powers in the one race so that all were not of the same classification. The course was from the clubhouse to the top of Vallamont Hill, was 1 1/3 miles long and ranged in grade from 8 -20 percent, it has five sharp curves on it which make it particularly dangerous. It was crowded with spectators from start to finish, most of them seeing an automobile race for the first time

’ve said this many times Greater Good article “How Do We before, but in case you are Scale Up Compassion?” Amy new to my articles, I think Richards and David Addiss we live in a pretty great ask whether epidemiology, the place. Dave Their idea is simple: if suffering to do. If you like the outdoors Bellomo clusters in certain places and are into hunting, hiking, and rolling hills, we have them. and among certain people, Coffee houses, craft beer, and farm maybe compassion can be studied, stands? Yes, please! strengthened, and spread ust like the u. That being said, I’m sure we’ve all seen Authors Richards and Addiss credit the rise in local crime, and the world Buddhist scholar Thupten Jinpa with seems to be getting colder (figuratively) proposing the original challenge. At a and meaner. We could all use a bit 2018 compassion education conference, more compassion, which we’ll define Jinpa observed that compassion training as concern for others. problem. Richards and Addiss suggest that similar questions can be asked about compassion. Where is compassion abundant, and where is it scarce? What organizational habits make people more likely to respond to suffering? Which policies make compassionate action easier, and which systems make it more di cult to act? Instead of treating compassion as a singular act of kindness, an epidemiologic approach would treat it as something that can be observed, mapped, measured, and possibly strengthened. If it can be observed in this manner, then it should also be able to be scaled. An individual would see a problem, re ect on it, make an emotional udgment, and then decide to act to alleviate the problem. Unfortunately, this won’t work with large institutions. To scale compassion, institutions require structure and policy that make compassionate behavior easy to notice, act on, and sustain. In Part 2 of this article. We will discuss practical steps to scale compassion. While we all wish for the world to be a better place, it’s time to put thoughts and words into action. John Lennon had it right: All you need is love. Now we ust need a plan and to take the next big step. FYI, I’m taking on new clients for fitness and wellness coaching. If you have a sincere interest in either or have questions, feel free to reach me at dave.bellomo@gmail.com.

and being moved to relieve it. This expanded definition matters because compassion is more than sympathy, which may simply recognize another person’s pain, and more than empathy, which may involve feeling with another person. Compassion includes a response. Compassion is where awareness meets concern, and concern leads to action. A compassionate person does not ust walk by a drowning person and feel sad. A compassionate person reaches out an arm to help. This is where things get tricky. Compassion becomes harder to define when the focus moves from individuals to systems. Can an organization be compassionate? Can a school, company, city, or government be compassionate like a single person? Common sense says that organizations do not have the capacity to be warm-hearted, but maybe that isn’t entirely true. Institutions can recognize suffering, set priorities, allocate resources, design policies, and create conditions that either relieve or worsen human suffering. So, collective compassion may not depend on whether an institution is able to feel compassion, but on whether it is organized to notice suffering as something can be measured, and respond to it consistently. This is where epidemiology comes in. Epidemiologists study patterns. Who is affected, where disease appears, and what factors increase or reduce the

from Buffalo, I arrived at 9:30 and was eventually oined by about two dozen cars and perhaps 100 people on both sides of the track. As so often on its summer so ourn, Big Boy leading a consist of tank-cars, modern helper-engines and a long retinue of passenger cars ran roughly 90 minutes behind, not showing up till past 11 but it was worth the wait! With ear-splitting blasts on its steampowered whistle recalling for all the world a factory shift-change 4014 thundered through like a dinosaur on wheels (24, to be precise). It was so overpowering that an older fellow next to me actually fell down! No, he wasn’t struck ust overcome and since the poor man was now kneeling on trackside rocks, another guy and I helped him up though in retrospect, this put a damper on the sight we had waited for so long. Nonetheless, we were all upright for the final car the 1927 Pullman sleeper Marco Polo, which once carried FDR. As icing on the cake, when I gathered up the four cents I’d put on the rails, I found a 1941 wheat penny, with the date still clearly visible even though it had been smashed at. A true coin-lover, I know I didn’t put that rare piece down where it came from will be forever shrouded in mystery. As 4014 headed on to Binghamton,

a challenge getting Clement’s wheelchair over the ballast (that’s railroad parlance for the chunky stones on which tracks are laid). UP’s website offers a Big Boy tracker (yes, that 85-year-old engine has a computer in its cab!) and as we got settled, it showed the train less than 10 miles away. But alas, in typical railroad fashion, the engine sat there for more than an hour while two massive freights barreled through instead but once again, it was worth the wait when the mighty monster materialized in a mass of steam and noise thrilling (and slightly deafening) many delighted kids in our trackside queue. Clem and I headed home through a snarled yet friendly tra c am the kind of thing that accompanied Big Boy throughout its historic visit. All told: six hours of travel and waiting for five minutes of railroad glory. But folks, this was once in a lifetime. Or in my case twice. And the second time, no one fell down.

nion Pacific No. 4014 is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. Notching 1.2 million pounds and 133 feet in length, the behemoth was one of 25 engines built for UP in 1941. Its normal home is Cheyenne, WY but the last so-called Big Boy made its first-ever trip east of the Mississippi this summer in honor of America’s 250th. Though my Webb-space generally covers vocab culture, I’m also a die-hard railfan so this week, I’m stepping away from regular fare to describe my two trips chasing this beast which drew sell-out crowds at such nearby sites as Steamtown and Horseshoe Curve. I wanted to see Big Boy in motion, preferably in a place with reliable parking and decent sightlines. So I picked Warsaw, NY roughly two and a half hours away. This was partly from nostalgia, as my namesake and grandfather Joseph W. Smith Jr. concluded his Erie Railroad career at the station in that town. Located beside a milelong straightaway, the depot has long since been torn down, leaving a broad at area of gravel which given Warsaw’s bucolic rural locale did not seem likely to be overrun with fans. And it wasn’t. Mindful of the train’s 9 a.m. departure

my homebound route through Corning would’ve availed additional sightings but I had my dog along and couldn’t ask her to endure more car-time on that blazing day. And so, having missed a second sighting and some of the first! Joseph W. I was determined Smith III to catch 4014 again a month later, as it left the Harrisburg area for Altoona and Pittsburgh. I’d initially considered its 30-minute scheduled stop in Lewistown but social media showed these events getting way too crowded. Indeed, at one station in Muhlenberg, after a long wait in 106 degrees, more than 100 people were treated for heatstroke with at least 35 taken to area hospitals. No thank you. Instead, I grabbed my friend Clement a 21-year-old Montoursville lad who is wheelchair-bound but always up for an expedition and we headed to Mi intown. This was a crapshoot, picked only because a map suggested good trackaccess in several spots. As it turned out, we hit the ackpot. With some guidance from a friendly local lady, we found the ats (as she called it) a wide open area at the edge of town. Good parking, a fine view and not too crowded though it was quite

The Roving Sportsman… Stinging Nettle and Indian Pipes By Jon Pries

A

hike through forests and fields this time of year can produce some interesting results. Not only does one have the opportunity to observe the antics and activities of young birds and mammals, but many other interesting sights and sounds abound. A frequent sight during the early light of a new day is the presence of a doe and her fawn, and sometimes a pair of fawns. Often, a fawn can be seen racing back and forth, doing sprints, and stops and turns as it builds its stamina and agility for the time it may be pursued by a predator. Throughout the day, you ust never know what you will come across if you are quiet and watchful as you hike along a mountain stream or old logging road. It is not ust the birds and animals that can provide interesting sights, but the plant life as well. I challenge you to become more proficient in the proper identification of the

hardwood and softwood trees that grow in the areas that you travel as you scout and hunt in Northcentral Pennsylvania. By learning more about which trees provide food for wildlife, you will increase your chances of success when hunting for tasty wild game for the dinner table. Take along a tree identification book if need be to help with the challenge, and perhaps mentor a youth as you do so. Shortly after a warm summer rain, mushrooms of all kinds can be spotted on trees or growing from the forest oor. There are many good books that will aid in identifying the various ones that grow in our area. Some are edible and quite tasty, but many are not, with some being downright deadly if eaten. A book or two to aid in identification is really important if you hope to pick some for the dinner table. One of the most identifiable plants that you might encounter this time of year, as you travel in the woods, is the Indian Pipes. The Indian Pipe, Monotropa uni ora, is a perennial

uses. For centuries, common nettle has been a staple of ancient cultures and remains an important food source worldwide. It is arguably one of the most nutritious wild edible plants available, but it needs to be cooked or dried to neutralize its sting. Prepare nettle leaves as you would spinach leaves — sautéed, stir-fried, lightly steamed, or used in soups. Stinging nettle tea is perhaps the easiest way to yield the benefits of nettle. Cover a handful of leaves with boiling water, let steep for 10 minutes or so, strain, and drink. For a stronger brew, loosely fill a canning ar with nettle leaves, cover with boiling water, place a lid on the ar, and allow the tea to steep overnight. Fresh mint will enhance the otherwise earthy avor. Stinging nettle has medicinal uses as an anti-in ammatory and to alleviate allergy symptoms. It is said that Knowledge is Power! The more you can learn and understand about the natural world around us, the better off you will be. There is much to learn about the benefits of our native plant world, and Stinging Nettle and Indian Pipes are ust two such examples.

native plant that grows in clumps of 3 or 4 to half a dozen or more, rising 4 to 10 inches above the decaying leaves on the forest oor. Frequently found in mature, moist, and shaded oak forests, it lacks chlorophyll, producing a cloudy or translucent appearance that gives rise to its nickname “ghost plant, and is actually classified as a wild ower. The plant is said to have medicinal properties and is used to treat bunions and warts, relieve aches and pains associated with colds, and serve as a sedative. Another plant that is found this time of year, primarily in damp, fertile soil in a field setting, is the Stinging Nettle, or Urtica dioica. The nettle has sharp hairs on its leaves, and if brushed against the skin, it can cause a slight rash and produce a stinging sensation in the area it touches. Also known as common nettle, it grows 2 to 5 feet tall and has coarsely toothed leaves, pointed on the ends, and can be several inches long. It imparts a painful sting through tiny hairs on the underside of its leaves and stems. This is a plant that is good to identify so that you can avoid casual contact. It does, however, have some medicinal

One reason it may be di cult to spot a deer with one of these conditions is that a deer that shows up pure white or piebald, no doubt, quickly becomes a target in hunting season because of its unique appearance. I suspect, too, that animals with either of these conditions stand out from their counterparts, making them more likely targets for predators. In the meantime, keep your eyes open for one of these unusual sightings. I think even spotting a piebald bird would be an interesting experience.

Obviously, either of these conditions can show up in our wildlife. At the same time, I have managed to see a couple of piebald deer. I don’t recall seeing any other wildlife with that condition. Several years ago, while hunting squirrels, I spotted a pure white red squirrel with pink eyes-an albino squirrel. I’m sure both of these conditions occur in other animals, but I don’t recall ever seeing any other animals with either, including birds.

After the three face each other in a round-robin format, the countries at the top of the standings will advance to the semifinals, while the other four teams meet in the quarterfinals. All games would be played at Dodger Stadium. To accommodate the MLB players in the Olympics and preserve the traditional 162-game schedule, changes will have to be made. Tentative plans would call for the regular season to begin a week earlier in March and then break for 11 days during the Olympics. This plan would include the Home Run Derby on July 10, the All-Star game on July 11, the six-team Olympic tournament on July 13-19, with the regular season restarting on July 21. At this point, while both sides are well aware of all the gains in fan interest, including possible Olympic participation, that could be forfeited if a labor agreement cannot be reached, the current positions of the team owners and the players could hardly be further apart. Perhaps both sides should stand in the batter’s box with a hard, high one coming their way.

Flood free agency fight in the 1970s, he added, “We owe it to the guys that have come before us to do the same thing.” Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers Paul Skeens and Braxton Ashcraft offered their views. “MLB is kind of presenting their perfect-world offers, and we’re kind of presenting our perfect-world offers,” said Skenes, a member of the union’s eightman negotiating committee. “Both sides kind of have their line that they’re not going to cross. Whether that results in missing games or missing a season, we’ll see. So, there’s a lot of time before there’s any real movement, I think.” First-time All-Star Ashcraft views the early negotiations as “back-and-forth proposals that may or may not be unrealistic.” In response, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated, “Of course, I worry about a work stoppage. We want to make an agreement. We’re open to whatever ideas people have, but we need a realistic framework that addresses the fans’ concerns about competitive balance, and you just can’t ignore that financial penalties have not gotten it done for us.” While baseball dangles near the edge of a dangerous cliff for the 2027 season, plans are moving forward for the inclusion of baseball in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Although there are still differences to be resolved, including hotel rooms, tickets, insurance, NIL rights, player selection

T

he 96th Williamsport Invitational is underway. The premier better-ball partners golf tournament is fantastic. It is one of the best in the state. I haven’t teed it up in several years, but many of my friends are in the field. There is always a nice mixture of talent. Young and old. The very best amateurs in the area and then some. There is a ton of history and tradition. Several great memories. The tournament started in 1928. It has endured the test of time. She only took two years off, back in 1945 for WWII, and again in 2020 due to the pandemic. I am still blaming Canada. I swung by the club earlier this morning. I shook a few hands and snapped some pictures. Everyone knew why I was there. ARE YOU WORKING ON AN ARTICLE? That made me smile. I still have many ties to this great tournament. I know most of the names on the leaderboard. The Championship Flight is loaded. Matt Spooner and JP Pawlikowski were medalists. These two youngsters are legit. They are the top seed of the 16 teams that qualified. The other flights are also strong. Everyone can play. You cannot hide. The format now switches to match play. You win. You advance. The Championships are slated for Sunday. I have to give some love to some others. Chris Walzer and Tommy Hanna are dangerous. Coach Rob Lytle and David Myers are battle-tested. It is good to see my man

Ryan Nittinger back in contention. Al Kline of Lewisburg had an ace on Thursday. He is playing with Deron Zendt of Florida. They have an interesting first-round matchup with Parker Everett and Tony Stopper. Scott Hanna and Greg Notz are cool. They kicked our tail a few months back. Stevie Less and Mike Braniff can hit it far. The same with Zach Prowant and Kyle Deisher. I love seeing Sean and Cole Duffy in the mix. This father-son duo is a team to notice. Ryan Ault and Tre Lesperance are my guys. They play golf for me at Lycoming College. I was thrilled to hear that they wanted to golf. These guys make me look good both on and off. The incoming sophomores qualified with a 64 and earned the number 2 seed. I was so happy and proud. Hopefully, they will continue to play well. The Warriors have a tough opener with John Zurich and Niall Donnelly. Zurich and I go way back. Fantastic dude. I used to be his caddy. Niall is a great lad from Ireland. Outstanding young man. Cool accent. I will do my best to sneak over for a few holes. Ryan and Tre are having a blast. You might have heard about Ault’s amazing shot in the practice round. Incredible. Ryan holed out his second shot from 242 yards on the par-5 16th. An albatross. A double eagle. Unbelievable. Driver. 3-hybrid for a deuce. Unheard of. Extremely rare. You have a better chance of catching a shark in the Susquehanna with a fly rod. Dead se-

rious. Tre also holed out his second shot on the difficult 13th in qualifying. An eagle from 100 yards. Insane. Save a few. I believe I have played in 11 of the 96 Invitationals. I paired up with Jim Sargent when I was fresh out of college. Eric Loudenslager and Jamie I turned some heads one Spencer year. We actually made it to the semifinals. We were the people champions. I also had two great years with my man, Craig Dell. He was a beauty. Unfortunately, Delly passed away two years ago. I still get goosebumps thinking about the big fella and our time at the Williamsport Invitational. Here are a few lines from my ODE to CRAIG. “We both felt our golf games were legit. What were we thinking? I don’t recall much from that week. Everything was a blur. I remember scrambling to find big Craig Dell a pair of golf shorts. WCC doesn’t allow cargoes, and that was Delly’s usual. This was well before Amazon. TJMaxx didn’t have anything in his size. Oh my. We finally scored at the very last minute. Maybe KMART? Then, to make matters worse, they made Craig tuck in his collared shirt. The children ran for the woods. “They announced our names on the first tee, and Delly was so dang nervous. He snapped, hooked one OB, and almost hit a car that was traveling north. He was in the pocket of those brand-new pleated shorts. Original Coors was his beer of

choice. WCC had none. But we arranged with management to run to Mid-State for the back nine. They went back for the next three days. You can’t make it up. Delly had to drive the cart the entire week because he couldn’t fit on the passenger side. He had a mighty swing, and I remember the extra-large divots he took. We ran out of sand. Craig and I didn’t play well, but we won the crowd. We were never contenders, but we shook the most hands. Again. Everyone loved the big fella. “I recall a match that came down to the last hole. A thunderstorm came out of nowhere. The sirens called everyone off the course. We marked our balls and went to the bar. It continued to pour, and we were told that we needed to come back to finish at 6 a.m. I was on the green, sitting pretty. All I had to do was two-putt for par. Most folks would say we were good. Congratulations. But our partners didn’t think we would make it back the next morning. They actually picked up the next few rounds. I seriously don’t remember, but we found a way. Delly and I could hardly move, and we both had the whiskey shakes. Many folks were watching as I approached the green. I hit my putt, and it vanished. Dell and Spencer birdie. They will advance. My partner smelled like Coors, and he gave me the greatest hug. He laughed for the next three hours. That was how we rolled.” Best wishes to my friends and fellow golfers. The Williamsport Invitational is the premier better-ball of partners. I am looking forward to seeing who prevails. Another team to add to this tournament’s long history. Enjoy the memories. Cheers.
