I
don’t know about you, but that was just too much of a holiday break. I’m hoping it was just the way the calendar fell this year, and this isn’t going to become the new reality. The two groups of people I heard from with the most complaints were parents and business owners. Parents, because the kids had way too much time off school and they ran out of things to do, other than get in trouble, and business owners, because it’s hard enough to get folks to work, let alone them being provided with reasons not to work. And then trying to get them back to work at the holidays’ end. I am overjoyed and feel very blessed to be penning my first column of . his is the th year my staff and have been fortunate enough to be welcomed into your home. Our sincere thanks and appreciation for reading and supporting our advertising clients, who make this possible. Please always let them know you saw it in the Webb Weekly. Editor Steph, along with her amazing staff of writers makes sure there’s something inside our pages for everyone. Please reach out if you have any ideas or suggestions. I always love hearing from you about
who your favorite writer is and why. This rings true when I’m your least favorite writer, and you let me know — just please always be a gentleman or lady. So much has changed since my Father and I began this journey, but one thing has remained the same: the amazing place we all call home and the special people who make up our little corner of Penn’s Woods. I have some loose ends to tie up from last year, as we all try to remember to mark everything . irst up want to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone for your generosity in filling up the Red Kettle in the front of our Webb Weekly o ce. ogether and through our Red Kettle Remembrance of my good friend Dave Sechler, we raised . . hat’s truly remarkable Again, thank you for your generosity, and God bless. If any late arrivals show up ’ll make sure they find their way to the Salvation Army in Williamsport. e t up our ecember th issue listed the winners of the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships Christmas Fun Coloring Contest. If you don’t have that issue lying around, all can be found at webbweekly.com. I want to give a shout-

There were Jim winners in every cateWebb Jr. gory and everybody who entered coloring skills was e ceptional I also want to thank the great list of folks who offered up the pri es. iberty Arena/Chaos, Elery Nau, Hooplas, Treasure Castle Playland, Reptiland, Harder Sporting Goods, Harvest Moon anes rout ond ark and airy Queen. All the prizes should be arriving at the winners’ houses, as they have been mailed. I must tell you, I am glad Santa finally picked those elves up before Christmas and got them out from under my feet in the o ce. That gets me to another great contest that actually runs right through January our th Annual ncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest. As always, I remind everyone a trophy buck is in the hands of the holder. As long as it’s legally harvested in our local area, all hunters are welcome to enter. Please remember, by entering, you’re automatically registered into a random ri e

The Monster Buck winner receives an amazing shoulder mount from Poust Taxidermy. Thank you to owner, Dana, and Sam, the taxidermy lady, for being involved in the contest and for your amazing wildlife artistry. The runner-up winners, second through fourth, based upon the Safari Club International scoring standards, receive gift certificates for venison processing at Stoltzfus Butchering in ill all. hank you to the great staff there for turning so many hunters’ venison into ama ing finished products and for always being involved in our contest. Hunters, please remember that for those of you entering the contest, your buck must be scored by anuary th. As we embark on a new year, I ask everyone to keep their eyes wide open and try to be a positive in uence for the good. If you don’t have something nice to say or post, keep it to yourself. And no matter if it’s national news or personal gossip, don’t believe everything you read, hear, or see. In a world where the truth should be easier than ever to find usually the lies get the most attention without being questioned. God Bless America.

e are officially in the swing of a new year, and I am sure many resolutions have already been made. If you are like most people, your New Year’s resolution is probably focused on yourself, and that is not a bad thing. It is important to prioritize ourselves and, more importantly, our health. But this year, I want to challenge you to make two New Year’s resolutions. Make one that benefits you, and make one that benefits others. Here are a few simple ideas to get you started. Set aside one night a week for family. As we get older and move into different stages of life, it is easy to fall into a routine or even a funk and convince ourselves that we do not have time for family. But your family is your biggest support system. They love you unconditionally and are often the ones who are there for you no matter what. Make the time. Those moments matter more than we realize. Prioritize saying “thank you” or “I appreciate you.” This can be something small, like thanking a server when you are out to eat or acknowledging someone who holds the door for you. But it can also be something bigger. Call someone who has played an important role in your life, past or present. Maybe it is someone who helped you

DID YOU KNOW?!
TOA, a unique musical production written by local author filmmaker and now composer, Alivia Tagliaferri will be presented at larke hapel, Lycoming College, January 9 to 18. Webb Weekly interviewed Tagliaferri to gain more understanding from her about this noteworthy musical and educational undertaking. What is STOA: A New Musical Journey about? “This original children’s musical follows the ourney of S A an older black bear known as the den mother of the forest. She guides the young animals, teaching them the wisdom of the trees and the soul songs gifted by Mother Tree,” Tagliaferri told Webb Weekly. “When STOA becomes a mother herself, she discovers that she has just as much to learn as she has to teach — about love, friendship, our true nature, and what it truly means to connect. At its heart, STOA is a warm and hopeful story about the strength of love and connection. “Director and Producer Jared Whitford and Musical Director and Co-Composer Sarah eely ecker have played an essential role in shaping the script and guiding the story into the production being staged
today.” How did STOA come about? “Well, it’s a story sewn very close to my own life e periences. he first song came to me the night I learned I was pregnant —although at the time, I had no idea it would become the anchor for a musical. I had just come through a few years of personal hardship, and during that period, I learned to make peace with life taking unplanned turns — and with the growth that comes from new experiences, both positive and negative. I also came to understand that, even though I wasn’t yet a mother, I had experienced motherhood in many ways throughout my life. That realization was pivotal for me because shortly thereafter, I learned I was pregnant with my son, John. During my pregnancy, new songs continued to come to me, and I would sing them to him — and record them into my phone so I wouldn’t forget. Shortly after he was born, I realized these songs were part of something larger, and that there was a story waiting to be told”. What should the public expect from this? “STOA is a family-friendly musical designed for audiences of all ages, with characters and themes that resonate across generations. Rooted in nature, the story ex-

A “What to Expect ” booklet will be provided, and the performance will be offered at a reduced cost to support accessibility.” Sara Keely Decker had this to say about STOA. “During the opening number, our beloved bear, Stoa, sings the phrase: ‘This story is mine and yours.” A simple lyric, but her words capture the heart of what this musical means to me and, in a broader sense, why we create art: in the sharing of story, song, art, and dance, we share our humanity and find connection with each other. STOA: A New Musical Journey reminds me (and hopefully, audiences, too!) of that beautiful truth.” Another key individual involved in STOA, ared hitford said S A is so magical because it’s all of the homegrown talent and the talent of the professionals working on it. I am the luckiest person in the world to be trusted to shepherd this show onto the stage! I can’t wait for young kids and their parents to experience our resounding message — in nature, all things are possible.” Public Performances riday anuary at p.m. limited seating) Saturday anuary at p.m. Sunday anuary at p.m. riday anuary at p.m. Saturday anuary at p.m. Sunday anuary at p.m. School Matinees

plores connection — to the natural world, to one another, and to ourselves. This musical celebrates love, friendship, courage, resilience, and community, with a special emphasis on family and connection in its many forms.” “STOA creates a shared experience that invites audiences to feel connected to one another and to the story.” What do you want people to take away from this? “I hope audiences leave feeling the enduring magic of love, friendship, and community.” “STOA fuses story and song with spirit and resilience. It is a journey through love, loss, and overcoming adversity — celebrating growth we never knew was possible and the strength found in our connections.” Is there anything else you wish to add? “STOA is truly a community story and a community effort. rom the earliest workshops to the music, direction, and cast, this project has grown because of people who believed in it from the very beginning. We are deeply grateful to our friends, families, sponsors, and surrounding communities, and honored to partner with Lycoming College for providing such a beautiful space. that the members have decided to continue the work on an extensive scale. The members will do most of the repairing themselves except where mechanical problems are found and they will appeal to the firemen for assistance. A group at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church also aided this year in repairing and distribution of the toys, handling a large number shortly before Christmas. More complete plans of the Junior League program will be worked out later this year it was announced. The members are reported as being very enthusiastic about participating in the project.
This year, resolve to have the conversations that bring peace of mind. Preplanning turns intention into reassurance. Give us a call and we will help you get started today.

even use photos as a reference. This shade works best for natural blondes or brunettes looking to add warmth in a mature, elegant way. Ask your colorist for a muted golden balayage, a subtle freehand coloring technique that looks more natural than traditional foil highlights. Or if highlights are your go-to, ask for a warm gloss afterward to restore richness to your strands. Moving on to brunettes. If you’re looking for a brooding shade to match up with your winter vibes, then look to cherry cola brunette. This darker shade gives hair a moody, polished glow without tripping into a full red. This is a great choice for brunettes who want something new, and it can suit blondes looking to go dark. Ask for a deep brunette base with soft violet-red lowlights or a cherry-toned gloss. For a more luxe, darker look, consider molten brunette, which combines chocolate and amber tones. If you are currently brunette, this shade will bring out a natural glow, depth, and shine. For those looking to darken lighter locks, it will bring dimensions and luminosity to your hair, especially when you follow up with a glossing treatment such as Overtone’s The Gloss: Shine Reviving Treatment Mask. Or, if you’re looking for a very dramatic change this season, there’s a gothic brunette. This is an ul-
tra-dark, almost inky brunette with intense depth and shine. This shade works best for those with a naturally dark base, not something a bleached blond wants to ump into headfirst. Ask your colorist for an espresso or a black-cherry-toned shade to deepen your natural color by several shades. The darker the hair, the glossier it will appear when it catches the sporadic winter light. If heritage gold, molten, and gothic are way out of your range, but you’d want to experiment with color, then there’s custom depth. This hair color technique involves a low-commitment demi-permanent gloss that deepens the natural base, while (if you have them) keeps your existing highlights visible. This is a middle ground that is meant to add shine, tone, and depth without feeling too heavy. And with custom depth, you can, in theory, “build it up” similar to a foundation. Go for an initial treatment. If you want to add more depth, go back for a second gloss and customize as you go. Changing up your color during winter is a great way to see through the cold months in style and experiment with your look. I normally color my hair at home; however, for these shades and treatments, it’s best to go to a professional. But follow up with at-home hair care.

their new king and country. The intense reprogramming lasted three years. They excelled in every way. When the king interviewed them, he found no one equal to them, and they immediately entered his service. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than the o cials in his kingdom. It seemed to King Nebuchadnezzar that Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah had fully gained new Babylonian identities as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Do those names sound more familiar? Their story is found in the book of Daniel, chapters 1-3. The three young men rose in prominence and position. But then life went sideways again. (Do you see the problem with basing your identity on the circumstances of life? Things change fast.) They were ordered, under penalty of death, to bow down and worship a golden idol set up by the king. They refused to bow and worship. The king warned them that resistance would result in execution. Their uick and confident response reveals the power of knowing your identity as a child of the God of life: King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we
will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. Daniel 3:16-18 The identity of these three exceptional men ran deeper than their rich Hebrew ancestry. It ran deeper than their captivity in Babylon, the years of reprogramming, the praise of King Nebuchadnezzar, and the positions of in uence they had attained. It even ran deeper than the imminent threat of being burned to death. The deep channel of grace from which their confidence owed was knowing they were children of the God of life. Because God’s identity is life, their identity was life, and no king or fiery furnace could take that identity away from them. God made us to live with him forever. Right now, Jesus is preparing a place for us in his Father’s house. Yes, sin cuts in on the physical aspect of everlasting life, and our human bodies will someday be laid to rest, but the spirit God breathed into us has the potential to live forever. As a child of the God of life, your identity is life. Live with that identity, and you will be as bold as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego – and their good friend, Daniel. Yes, Daniel had a run-in with King Nebuchadnezzar, too, but even a lion’s den couldn’t take life from him. That’s the power of knowing your identity! For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. –John 3:16

he fascinating machinery of Lycoming County government operates through multiple layers of democracy, each designed to serve citizens while maintaining careful checks and balances. Understanding how this system works reveals the thoughtful structure that keeps our community functioning smoothly throughout the year. At the heart of county operations sit three commissioners, elected every four years to serve as our primary governing body. These individuals wield both executive and limited legislative powers across our fifth class coun ty, carrying responsibility for budget adoption, tax rate setting, and debt management. They oversee departments ranging from planning and community development to public safety and landfill operations making decisions that affect every resident’s daily life. The commissioners also serve on several critical secondary boards, including the salary board that sets employee compensation, the prison board, the election board, and the board of assessment appeals. This broad representation ensures county leadership maintains direct involvement in key operational areas while providing oversight across multiple governmental functions. What makes our system particularly interesting is the presence of independently elected row o cers who manage specific constitu tional functions. hese o cials operate their
departments with remarkable autonomy, though commissioners must approve their budgets. This creates an intricate balance between independence and accountability that prevents any single entity from wielding excessive power. he controller serves as our fiscal watch dog auditing county finances and overseeing spending with meticulous attention to detail. Currently operating under a temporary appointment following a recent resignation, this position demonstrates how our system adapts to unexpected changes while maintaining essential services. The district attorney prosecutes criminal cases and serves as our chief law enforcement o cer while the sheriff handles court security, prisoner transport, and warrant service. The coroner investigates unattended or suspicious deaths, providing crucial services during tragic circumstances. Our treasurer collects ta es and manages county funds ensuring fi nancial operations continue smoothly. The prothonotary and clerk of courts maintain civil and criminal legal records, creating an essential archive of legal proceedings that affects prop erty rights, criminal justice, and civil disputes. The register and recorder keep track of wills, deeds, and property transfers, documenting the significant financial and legal milestones that shape individual lives and community development. These records provide the foundation for property ownership, estate planning, and real estate transactions throughout the county. Our judicial system adds another essential layer through the twenty ninth judicial district

ommunities across America owe a tremendous debt to the men and women who have served in the United States military. These individuals are our neighbors, friends, and family and have made profound sacrifices for the freedoms and security we enjoy every day. Yet too often, the stories of local veterans go untold, and their contributions go unrecognized. The Lycoming County Hometown Heroes Program is a wonderful example of how a community can actively honor, recognize, and support its veterans.
Understanding the importance of such recognition and the unique history of this program reveals not only the profound impact on veterans themselves but also on the community at large. Honoring veterans is more than a public ceremony. It is an acknowledgment of their courage, service, and the personal sacrifices made on behalf of our nation. his recognition instills a sense of pride and belonging, both for veterans and their families. When a community comes together to publicly recognize those who have served, it sends a clear message that your service

is valued your sacrifices are remembered, and your legacy is part of our shared story. For many veterans, transitioning back into civilian life can be challenging. They may face physical, emotional, or financial di culties. ublic recognition programs, Dave like Hometown Heroes, Bellomo provide more than symbolic value. They help to foster a supportive environment, raise awareness of veterans’ needs, and often serve as a gateway to additional support and resources. They also inspire the next generation by providing visible role models of service, patriotism, and commitment to community. Locally, the Lycoming County Hometown Heroes, Inc. (LCHH) program is a tribute initiative designed to recognize service men and women from the Lycoming County area who have served, or are currently serving, in a branch of the United States military. The program’s roots can be traced back to its original management under Valley Prevention Services. “In 2014, when Valley Prevention discontinued the program, the Lycoming County Hometown Heroes organization adopted and revitalized it,” said LCHH program director, Mike McMunn, “ensuring the tradition would continue for future generations.” When asked the purpose behind the creation of the Hometown Heroes Program,

McMunn responded, “It was twofold. First, to publicly honor the service and sacrifices of Lycoming County’s veterans and active-duty service members. Second, to raise funds for direct financial assistance to veterans and their families in times of need.” Over the years, the program has expanded its mission, not only recognizing those who have served but also providing support for needy veterans through assistance with rent, mortgage payments, vehicle and home repairs, and utility bills. “To me, it gives a sense of fulfilment to be part of an organi ation giving financial assistance to our service members and veterans,” said McMunn. One of the most visible aspects of the Lycoming County Hometown Heroes Program is the installation of commemorative banners. Beginning January 1, 2026, community members can reserve a space for a personalized banner honoring a veteran. Each 18” x 36” banner, which will be displayed on streetlights in Williamsport for one year, features the veteran’s name, photo, branch, and era of service, and the sponsor’s name. The banners serve as a daily reminder to all who pass by of the sacrifices made by their fellow citizens. The program is open to all. Anyone, including family members, loved ones, and local businesses, can sponsor a veteran’s banner. The sponsor’s name is prominently displayed on the banner, and sponsors are also acknowledged in the Lycoming County Hometown Hero Ceremony Program Booklet. The program is non-political and non-partisan, ensuring the focus remains on honoring service rather than promoting any

The Roving Sportsman… An Opportunity for a Fresh Start By Jon Pries
P
arty, party, party – it’s what most folks do on New Year’s Eve to say goodbye to the previous year. Hopefully, our heads have cleared up by now from the revelries of New Year’s Eve, and we can take time to focus on what lies ahead in the coming year. So, steep a pot of tea or brew a ug of coffee and let’s sit down and contemplate what the year ahead may bring our way. Goal setting is important. I have often found that the best way to accomplish a goal is to think it through, write down your game plan, which should include a realistic timetable, and then review that plan from time to time to verify that progress is being made. Make a list of your goals, which should include a few short-term items as well as longer, more involved things that you must stretch to reach. Being able to cross off the short term items once you have accomplished them will give you the encouragement to continue working on the long-term or more involved goals. Time is viewed by many as one of our most precious assets. It is the one thing that “once it is gone, it is gone forever.” You can’t get it back. Thus, in setting your goals, you must be sure that what goals you are setting are truly worth trading valuable time for in order to achieve them.
Include in your list of goals a realistic time at which you can reach each goal and define the pay back value of each goal meaning, how your life will be made better by achieving each of the goals you finally decide upon. What are the obstacles you expect to encounter along the way? Once your list of goals is complete, lay out your plans to achieve each of the items. Are you being realistic Are you biting off more than you can chew? If you are satisfied that all of the goals are doable it is time to write down your plans on the calendar and start NOW. Start a daily diary. If you have one already, then, over the next month or so of chilling temperatures and falling snow, you can while away the time by reviewing what you saw, thought, or accomplished in the past year. By recording data from last year such as when turkeys began showing up in your hunting area in the spring, when you were able to begin spring planting of food plots, when various hatches occurred on your favorite trout streams or when you observed several nice bucks running together prior to the archery season, you will be able to lay out a much better game plan and set goals for the upcoming seasons. Promoting your sport would be an excellent goal to include in your plans for the next 12 months. Whether you are a biker, a hiker a hunter or a fisherman it is im

While I have used and still use the above techniques, more often than not, I go with the ‘feel” rather than the sight approach. With this technique, your strikes are all picked up by what you feel when that fish sucks in your bait oftentimes, it’s just a very light tap or slight tug. football coach Terry Smith helped sweeten the bitter taste in the mouths of Nittany Lions fans left simmering by the turmoil surrounding James Franklin’s departure. The reaction to Smith’s seven-game tenure leading the Lions football program has been overwhelmingly positive. Fans and players expressed their appreciation for his leadership during the challenging season. The chants from the team’s fans and the outpouring of support from PSU players have solidified Smith’s place in Penn State football history. Smith’s post-game comments after the Pinstripe Bowl victory over Clemson left lasting impressions with many. “This group, I love this group,” Smith commented while fighting back tears. “They’re just a special group of guys. This is the greatest moment of my life. It’s just a great moment for my family and me. I’m just so happy for our guys. I love Penn State. I love football. And the game and Penn State have done amazing things for my family and me. I’m just thankful and grateful.” It’s nice to see that good things done by a good guy have been rewarded by the new Penn State coach, Matt Campbell, who has announced that Smith will be retained on his incoming coaching staff. While 2025 produced so many negative stories, the lessons I’ve learned late in the year from Ken Hunter and Terry Smith have left me smiling!

Following many twists and turns and a frantic cell phone call inquiring as to where I was, Ken provided directions and said he would wait by the side of the road to make sure I didn’t drive by. With the navigational puzzle conquered, the next few hours brought me face-toface with the many delights hanging from his studio walls. Although never having hunted a single day in my life, the clarity and stunning beauty of the wildlife he captured on canvas was a treat ever before experienced. He showed me covers of national published magazines featuring drawings he had done. With pride, he called my attention to a photo on the wall, taken at the White House, showing President Bush and his wife, Barbara, with a drawing of an American Buffalo he was asked to paint by the administration. The visit ultimately provided the answer to what to get the son-in-law for Christmas. The chosen print was wellreceived, which came with the son-inlaw’s request to visit the studio himself, which we look forward to accomplishing. While Ken Hunter provided a very personally rewarding ending to a tumultuous 2025, the feel-good dynamics brought forth by Penn State interim

But many said he was an outstanding teacher. Tough and fair. A passionate lover of literature, Mr. Bassett was an avid reader, writer, poet, and editor. He took great pride in making his students better. Larry was the brains behind the award-winning “Cherry and White” literary magazine at Williamsport High.
