Gone From GTMO and to Rent a Riot n my travels this past week or so I’ve

I

had several folks suggest I should give Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House, John Boehner some time. You know, to settle in with the new Congress, to come up with a plan for America in response to where President Obama is taking our country. It’s unfair of me to expect immediate action and rhetoric about so many issues. Are you Republican folks kidding me? It is exactly what I thought it would be. First they have had two months plus to come up with a “plan”. Although the Congress didn’t take their seats in the land of the nonproductive until after the New Year, the great leadership of McConnell and Boehner knew where they would be sitting. Instead of understanding the urgency of our great Nation, instead of respecting those who elected the new members of the House and Senate, Republican leadership sits on their hands, takes a two week vacation, returns to Washington and then begins the direction plans of what needs to be done. Strong leadership begins with planning

and organization, they have none. Our Nation’s voters aren’t happy with you or the Democratic Party. There are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats, there are moderate conservative Republicans and Democrats. There are people from both parties that are just fed up and want what’s best for the future of America. As I said before, the number one thing the Republican Party had going for them this November was President Obama. He will not be your crutch to save you in 2016. You will be judged on what gets done and how you represent those who elected the Republican Party to power in both the House and Senate. It is politics as usual inside the beltway, no plan, no action. By now you should have America on your side as you get after issues of National Security which represent the most pressing problems facing us. Your first move to introduce legislation to keep the Islamic terrorist prisoners at Guantanamo Bay went well. The next day President Obama released five more bad guys back into the World. Basically he stuck his middle finger up at you.

If

I agree with the move as do most Americans in the shadow of the most recent Islamic terrorist attack in France. None of the current GTMO detainees should ever see the light of Jim day. They will only Webb, Jr. return to perpetrate heinous acts against the innocent. But did you really think an individual such as Mr. Obama would sit there and say okay, I’ll stop with my plan of returning evil back into the main stream? What is worse is how you reacted to Mr. Obama’s release of five Yemini terrorists. Did I mention Yemen and Syria are terrorist hotbeds, and Mr. Obama has released some of the worst from both in the last couple of months? When this occurred, Mr. McConnell and Mr. Boehner should have called a press conference and went in front of America and the World and called Mr. Obama out on what he did and who he is. A supporter of radical Islam and a threat to national security. Why else would an American President, at a time of war against ISIS, Al Qaeda and all Islamists

release prisoners of war from American custody? What does the great Republican leadership do? Nothing, Nada, same as always. The American people are tired of this. We are at war for our way of life and existence. Stand up or step down. Be honest, call it what it is and speak to the American people. You have FOX News as your mouthpiece. Why not hold a conference on National Security with the Democrats in Congress? Many are as upset with the so-called President as I am. Put the cards on the table, lets them know what we need to do to secure our borders, wage war on radical Islam and protect our homeland. You have the numbers on your side. Many Democrats are fearful of not being reelected. Operate from a position of strength not to mention it’s what you should be doing to honor the oath you took of office to protect our Great Land. Republicans that want to keep putting their heads in the sand, thinking they are right and President Obama and the liberals are the only problem. Please take off those rose-colored glasses. Look at what is going on. Stop worrying about reelection and yourselves and serve the American people. And if you think now is the time for Mitt Romney you have

TO PURCHASE FIRE BOAT FOR USE IN EVENT OF FLOOD

T

he Williamsport Fire Department will be in the near future equipped with a fire fighting boat. Upon recommendation of Fire Chief Michael E. Clark, a 20-foot motorboat will be purchased and equipped with a Lycoming Motor built by Lycoming Manufacturing Company in the city. The boat will be powerful enough for sea going and so constructed that it will be almost impossible to overturn it. After the boat arrives a large pump will be installed. It will use a nozzle similar to those used on fire engines. In times of flood the boat will be available for rescue work and will have a large enough motor to run with speed against the strong current. After the large fires in the business district during the flood last March, Chef Clark became interested in developing some protection against a recurrence of such conflagrations. After considerable study he decided to purchase a motorboat and fully equip it with fire fighting apparatus. Firemen will be trained in the handling of the equipment and boat. The funds to purchase the boat and necessary apparatus will come for the most part from the surplus account raised for the State Firemen’s Convention here last October. In addition to the fire department boat, three owned by the West Branch Council, Boy Scouts of America, will be available for use by local officials. The boats have been brought to this city from Camp James N. Kline and have been stationed at the Susquehanna Canoe Club.

This Week’s Features!

He funnels the money through legit liberal nonprofits to the end source. But there is no doubt of his intentions. He is referred to as a friend of the Democrats and “the world leader of liberalism.” He donates millions in the name of education of his beliefs and chicanery to create a master liberal race. He truly provides the bankroll for evil. So, what are our leaders going to do about him, and his creation of a “rent a riot threat to our Homeland”? My guess is the Liberal Democrats won’t kill the golden goose. My guess is the great Republican folks turn the other cheek. You will not find a bigger supporter of Constitutional Rights than myself. But this man undermined the system and created violence, looting, arson and financial ruin to many black and white business owners in Ferguson, and he should be held accountable. This far exceeds the Constitutional right to peacefully assemble. So from our President releasing terrorists, to a billionaire funding chaos and social unrest, what is next? We need someone to find their voice and provide the leadership our Country so badly needs. God Bless America.

Just relax...

When a family member dies away from home on business or on vacation, there is understandably a strong desire to bring the body home as soon as possible. However, factors such as the cause and location of the death can necessitate procedures that delay the return. In addition, the body must likely be prepared and shipped in accordance with local laws. Faced with these complexities, family members are strongly encouraged to have a funeral home in their locality handle the arrangements. As the receiving funeral home that is responsible for the funeral and burial services and the one to which the remains are consigned, it is in the best position to personalize the services. Regardless of your choices for services, KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME is here to assure that your requests are honored. We have a history of assisting those who have suffered a loss. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle. We are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 323-7717. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facility at 1914 Memorial Avenue. We have been serving the community with compassion since 1879. We will exceed your expectations. QUOTE: “Not pain or death is to be feared, but the fear of death and pain.” - Epictetus

got to be joking. Moving on to another ridiculous breach of homeland security. George Soros, you probably haven’t heard of him. That’s because the mainstream media buried his most recent story. Soros is worth about $20 billion according to Forbes. He is a liberal destroyer and prides himself on that. He is a native of Hungary. He has a reputation for insider-trading and been convicted of this in France and Hungary. He is a bad man with enough cash to do harm. The liberal media wants to hide his evil and for us to believe he is a philanthropist. Well good luck with that. Soros’s most recent liberal power-play was a donation of $33 million to fund the organization and protest in Ferguson and NYC. Soros’s money hit at the grassroots level in creating social unrest and violence. He bankrolled the influx of paid anti-police and government protesters that converged on Ferguson. He paid for the “Black Lives Matter Movement”. If you remember this was the same protest movement that chanted “What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want it? Now!” Prior to the execution style killing of two NYC Policemen.

he alarm rings and Justin Null gets out of bed to meet the day, a day that will be a challenge, like the day before and the day before that. He struggles to get dressed, his pants being the biggest obstacle thus far. Before heading out the door Justin faces another hurdle, tying his shoes. Again, as in past days and months, the 32 year-old tucks the shoelaces inside his worn shoes, as once again the task is impossible. His day will be filled with both good and bad, restraint, determination and ignoring the stares and snide remarks that have become part of his day. A typical day for a man that once carried around extra weight equaling the weight of a refrigerator. “Mommy, that guy is huge!” was a common statement from children when Justin tipped the scales at nearly 500 lbs. The remark is one of many he hopes never to hear again. “About five months ago I pretty much hit rock bottom when I hit my highest weight of 487 lbs. It was very scary knowing that I was almost half of 1000 lbs.,” Justin said. “I kept thinking why am I doing this to myself. I began to have a list of health issues which I was advised by doctors if I continued down this road I would not make it to 40 yearsold.” While the news was troubling to hear, it was a much needed slap in the

face to get in shape. Justin realized something had to give, and it sure wasn’t giving up. Although Justin had tried, unsuccessfully to lose the weight, the realistic threat of dying young gave him the will to try again. His goal to weigh under 250 lbs., a true monumental challenge that’s producing encouraging results. To try and visualize the extra weight Justin was carrying around, if he went from 500 lbs. down to 200 lbs. the 300 lbs. would equal: • (283) 16 oz. bottles of water. • (35) gallon jugs of water, • (60) five-pound bags of sugar. • (14) tires for an average sedan car. • (6) 50 lb. bags of kitty litter. • A GE side-by-side stainless steel refrigerator. Yes the extra weight equaled the weight of a refrigerator. Life wasn’t always so difficult for Justin, in fact during high school the Montoursville native; a 160 lb. Null was active in sports, including swimming, track and field, football and soccer. As with many weight gain issues, stress tends to be a trigger and that’s exactly what happened to Justin. “I started putting on heavy weight from the emotional stress after my father died during my senior year in high school. That triggered the start of my over-eating. In time the over-eating became an obsession and eating disorder

As of December 25 Justin weighed in at an amazing 394 lbs. “This is the first time in a long time that I have been under 400 lbs. In five months I have lost 93 lbs. with the help and guidance of Ron White Jr. at Crossfit Tried & True in Muncy.” Null credits the structure at the gym and personalized help as the key to his transformation. “Justin is an impressive person and his will to become healthy,” said Ron White Jr. “He has inspired many people that with determination, anything is possible.” For Justin Null the hard work not only means being happy, it’s also a second chance at life. after high school,” he said. “The amount I ate increased over time and therefore I did eat a lot. My guilty pleasures were all you can eat Chinese buffets as well as other types of buffets. I constantly ate fast food and drank tons of regular soda. The weight was a constant issue with my everyday life and prohibited me from doing many things. As he takes control of his life, dropping the weight isn’t the only benefit for Justin because the more pounds he loses, the more money St. Jude’s Children Hospital gains, thanks to Pounds for Dollars, a plan where losing also means winning. “From January 1 to June 1, for every pound I lose a sponsor will pledge to donate a dollar amount per pound, this is to keep people actively motivating me plus it’s a fun way to donate,” said Justin, noting that any donation amount or one time donation is greatly appreciated and would be most welcome. Justin selected St. Jude’s because the hospital provides world-class care for many families and helps ill children to live a happy life, one without sickness and worry. “Every pound that I drop makes me feel less like a prisoner in my own body. I find I am able to do more things I never was able to do before with all the weight,” Justin said. “I also lost a lot of friends because of how uncomfortable they were around me because of the constant stares in public. It became very depressing.” Those negative experiences are slowly melting away as Justine’s 5 XL shirts and 60 inch wide pants become smaller.

Susquehanna Council BSA Scout Expo. wo young men stand ready for fierce competition. In front of them are two troughs filled with water. Atop the water sits 2 handmade sailboats at the ready. READY, SET, BLOW!!! Both boys start huffing and puffing pushing the sailboats through the water toward a finish line and we have a WINNER! The crowd gathered to watch the spectacle erupts in a loud cheer. Both boys are “high fived” congratulated with the winner holding a ribbon. The group of scouts ready themselves for another round. This has been the scene for many years at the Lycoming Mall in Muncy, PA for the Scouts of Pack 14. They have held the Rain Gutter Regatta for the boys each year at the mall show. This year the Susquehanna Council in partnership with the Lycoming Mall and Susquehanna Valley Mall will be holding a Scout Expo OPEN TO THE PUBLIC on Saturday February 7th from 10 to 4. Many local Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops will be on hand to offer various activities for the public to participate in and provide information about their meeting times and how to join. Also on hand will be the Order of the Arrow dance team. The Team will be performing several OA dances in a Native American style. For more than 95 years, the Order of

the Arrow (OA) has recognized Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. This recognition provides encouragement for others to live these ideals as well. Arrowmen are known for maintaining camping traditions and spirit, promoting year-round and long-term resident camping, developing leaders, and providing cheerful service to others. OA service, activities, adventures, and training for youth and adults are models of quality leadership development and programming that enriches, supports, and helps to extend Scouting to America’s youth. You will meet adult volunteers who are also involved in the Scouting program. After all, Scouting isn’t just for kids. It is a great place for adults to volunteer time mentoring our young people in community service, leadership and life skills. Teaching our future community leaders!! Moms, Dads, Grandparents and those from all walks of life have things to share with our youth and are welcome. Join us at the Lycoming Mall or Susquehanna Valley Mall to see what scouting is all about and find a pack, troop, or crew who meets near you. You can also visit www.beascout. org for more information on joining. 2015 SCOUTING EXPO SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH 10AM TO 4 PM LYCOMING MALL AND SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY MALL

T

he simple fact is that cold weather doesn’t give you a cold, but it can make you more susceptible or worsen your symptoms. Allergies do not go away in the winter. Up to 20 percent of people have persistent allergies, often due to more time spent indoors with increased exposure to indoor allergens like pet dander, pesky dust bunnies and mold. Illness may not always be caused by a virus, but over 200 viruses cause the common cold - including rhinovirus, enterovirus, adenovirus and some strains of influenza. RSV and parainfluenza also play a role in “colds”. We have been exposed to these viruses all of our lives, but bodily responses may vary. Cold weather causes decreased blood flow in the nose, ears and hands in order to keep the heart and brain protected. This causes dryness and a decreased ability of the nose to filter pathogens like viruses. Warmed, humidified air aids symptoms and resolution of illness and this is also why our immune system raises our core temperature and causes fever. Cold viruses reproduce best at temperatures in the low 90s. Therefore, fever up to 103 degrees F is protective,

not harmful. When fever happens and we feel uncomfortable due to warmth, it’s a bad idea to go out without a coat or hat causing the vicious cycle to repeat itself. Cold temperatures also affect the body in other ways. The heart. Cold temperatures, high winds and dampness can steal our body heat and decrease our core temperature. Dress in layers and cover your head to prevent hypothermia which can severely strain your cardiovascular system. If you haven’t exerted yourself all year, shoveling a heavy snowfall will add strain to your heart. Pay attention to significant chest discomfort during or after exertion (and not only in the winter months). Telling the difference between chest pain due to your heart versus muscle/ligament strain or heartburn can be difficult. If you have risk factors for heart disease like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, history of smoking or history of a heart attack, you should seek medical attention if symptoms occur. The lungs. Cold weather can particularly affect patients with asthma or COPD by triggering inflammation and spasm of the airways. The head. Changes in barometric

pressure and drop in temperature can trigger migraines. To help combat the negative effects of cold, follow these tips. Take frequent breaks when shoveling snow, and don’t eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol beforehand. Use a small shovel or snow blower, if available. If you’ve been sweating and start shivering, change your clothes. If breathing the cold air causes discomfort, loosely cover your mouth or nose with a handkerchief or scarf. To protect yourself from the common cold viruses: Always practice good hygiene and hand washing – scrub with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, alcohol sanitizers are ok. It’s the 20 seconds of abrasion between the hands that matters, not the solvent. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. There is no vaccine available to fight all the types of viruses that can make you sick, but you can protect yourself from influenza by getting vaccinated. It does not and cannot give you the flu. Quit smoking. Nicotine decreases the ability of the tiny hairs in our nose and elsewhere to filter air and clear

infection causing colds to stick around longer in smokers. When ill: Rest. Hydrate. Use over the counter symptom relievers; Tylenol for fevers, body aches, decongestants and cough suppressants like dextromethorphan only if age over 6 unless directed by your doctor. Using humidifiers and vaporizers is proven to help relieve symptoms and speed up recovery. Move away or cover yourself with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then wash your hands. Avoid directly touching faucet handles and door knobs. Most colds go away on their own without any complications or needing antibiotics. Typically viral infections peak by seven days of symptoms and resolve by 14 days. If either of these is not the case, you should call your doctor. She earned her medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at Williamsport Family Medicine Residency.

2015 Fitness Trends

F

itness trends always kick off a new year with a projected release of something new or a specific form of training that is still Booming. 2015 Looks like this… HIIT - HIIT is still HOT. High Intensity Interval Training. Tabata is another form of HIIT training. Popularity remains constant because it works for all levels of fitness and results are a given with consistency. Plus, it’s hard to get bored. Recovery - Because of the popularity of HIIT workouts, people are feeling more muscle soreness, sometimes even injured. So enters the new trend of “Recovery” programs or “Self Care” workouts like Restorative Yoga and classes that include massage balls and foam rollers. Telemetry – Tech gadgets. Wristband trackers, heart rate monitors and other wearable devices. Many of these wearable

devices sync up with apps. There are apps for tracking every form of training that exists it seems. Online Workouts - Web based fitness. More people are participating in online fitness challenges and weight loss contests or doing their Buffy Basile workouts with streaming videos on YouTube. DVDs are OUT. Short workouts - Scientifically based 7 Minute Workouts are coming! One-hour workouts are considered old school. 20, 30 and 40-minute workouts are in. People who feel intimidated by a one-hour workout are more willing to try a shorter class. Kids fitness - P.E. programs are being cut and sports programs have a high attrition rate due to competitiveness, non-athletic kids have fewer outlets for fitness leading them into an early sedentary lifestyle. Kids fitness programming will start growing by leaps and bounds.

K

C and the Sunshine Band are still as widely popular today as they were when they first danced into the music scene 40 years ago. Harry Wayne Casey – KC for short – developed a unique fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove, giving us an impressive string of hits like “GET DOWN TONIGHT”, “THAT’S THE WAY (I LIKE IT)” and “SHAKE YOUR BOOTY”. With sales of over 100 million records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards and an American Mu-

sic Award, KC and the Sunshine Band was one of the most progressive bands of the 70‟s and is credited with changing the sound of modern pop music! You can count on hearing their music on the radio, at a nightclub, at the movies, in a sports arena or at one of the 100plus concerts KC and the Sunshine Band play every year and now is your time to hear them live on Thursday January 22nd at The Community Arts Center in Williamsport. Tickets are available by calling 570-326-2424 or online at www. caclive.com.

Tips for Regret Free Shopping

Unretouched 4-D Ultrasound image at 30 weeks.

I Am An American. I am endowed by my Creator with the inalienable right to life. Just like you, and every other American. You know who I am. Now that you can see my face, will you use your voice? Please tell America, I am an American, too.

hopping online is one my favorite activities. It’s easy, convenient, and I really enjoy the anticipation of package delivery – I’m crazy for tracking numbers. However, unlike shopping at brick-and-mortar locations, it’s highly likely you can end up with some real dud purchases, regrets, and most unfortunately something you may not be able to return. So here are my tips for effective, painless, and regret-free online shopping Before you buy any piece of clothing online, take the three-outfit challenge. This entails thinking of a trio of ensembles you can create with the item you want to buy – using only items you already have in your closet. If you’re unable to think of at least three looks, then chances are this particular garment doesn’t really fit into your style wheelhouse. Take a REALLY close look at the garment. Use the zoom and alternate-view features to see as many angles and details as possible. A dress in the long view may look completely chic, but once you zoom in it may be that the fabric is puckering, looks cheap, or has uneven stitching. Also, read past reviews of customers who bought the same thing, paying special attention to those reviewers who share sizing info. Try to find someone with similar sizing to yours and get their take. I feel like there’s an entrepreneurial opportunity here to invent a “smell-o-vision”

like app for fabric, like “feel-in-net” but that sounds kind of terrible…? If you have a question, don’t call customer service, you’ll just get trapped in the phone maze of options. Use live chat instead. Many sites like Nine West, Saks, and Madewell have a very fast, almost instantaneous response rates. Also, if you do utilize customer service then DEFINITELY advertise it. Like the brand on FB and follow it on Twitter and let them know about your experience, whether it’s good (and especially) if it’s bad. Connecting with retailers on social media opens up discount codes, contests, and promotions that may not be available to all customers. Read the fine print on essentials like returns, shipping costs, taxes, and privacy settings. Ideally, you don’t want to pay for shipping or returns, especially if you’re ordering the same thing in several sizes (more on this in the next step). Here’s a list of the sites that offer BOTH free shipping and returns, with no minimum purchase (bless them): Topshop, ASOS, Neiman Marcus, Kate Spade, Nordstrom, Piperlime, FORWARD by elyse walker, Shoebuy.com, Zappos, and Shopbop. Stores like Jcrew and Gap have free in-store returns. Also, for big-time purchases like designer handbags and jewelry (which are taxable in PA) and can run you into the mid-three figures, you could end up paying quite a lot

may want to size down. Online is not the place to try tricky trends. If you’re eyeing some new, avant-garde trend on Nasty Gal, best to try it on in person first – I’m talking to you crop-tops! If the retailer doesn’t have a location near you, try to find a store with similar items for a test-run/try-on before ordering. This is especially important if you’re interested in experimenting with a new silhouette, regardless of whether or not it’s trendy. Best to try it on in the store and know right away whether it works or not. This will save you the heartache of returning unflattering garments that had so much promise online, but failed in real life. Search before you purchase. (Hey that kind of rhymes!) Many times, particularly for nonbrand specific sites, like ModCloth, the item you’re craving may be on sale somewhere else. Or, there may be a slightly cooler version of the black pump you’re looking to pick up. Do a quick check—search for your item on Polyvore, ShopStyle, or the always reliable Google Shopping, then sort by price. If a better deal or version of what you’re seeking is out there, these sources will help you find it! Stay safe out there on the world wide web and happy shopping! in taxes. If you buy online from a store that has a physical location in your state, you’ll pay sales tax – even if you shop on a website or the goods are shipped from outside your state. So, if the boutique you’re buying from online has a brick-and-mortar location near you, you’ll save if you find that item somewhere else. For stores that sell online only, check the shipping or tax page to figure out which states are charged sales tax. For example, Net-A-Porter only charges sales tax on orders delivered to New York or New Jersey. Better yet, have friends or family in Oregon, New Hampshire, Alaska, Delaware, of Montana? Have your order shipped to them to skip the taxes completely. And always make sure the site you’re shopping has secure login and checkout. This isn’t so much an issue with major retailers, but you want to pay extra attention to security settings for indie and mom-andpop operations. Consult the sizing guides. Most online shopping sites will have a size guide, and each one is different. A large at Forever21 is more like a medium at Anne Taylor. So, measure yourself and compare to the each stores’ size chart to find the best fit. If you’re still unclear on which size works best for you, then order more than one! This goes back to reading the fine print on returns above. Whichever size does not work, send it or take it back. Also, be aware of fabric content: If something is labeled stretch you

Laser Therapy is an outpatient, non-surgical therapeutic modality that has been shown to reduce inflammation that causes pain while accelerating the healing process. It offers non-invasive treatment to promote healing for those who suffer from pain in muscles, nerves and joints, like that associated with chronic knee pain. Laser Therapy is used by collegiate and professional athletes to accelerate healing.

This pain-free, non-surgical approach works by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes, providing pain relief and reducing injury damage. This therapy, which uses leading edge technology, has been successful and allowed patients to return to work, recreational sports, competitive activities and everyday life without pain. Results vary depending on the nature and severity of the condition as well as complicating and aggravating factors. An examination is necessary to determine if this therapy is likely to be beneficial in your case. Patients treated with Laser Therapy often show a higher level of function, both during and after the treatment period. This therapy provides a conservative and low cost alternative to those facing surgery as well as those who are not yet surgical candidates, but are bothered by the side effects of drug management or where drug management is ineffective.

many other patients. The First 25 Callers Only can get everything we’ve listed here for only $35. Remember what it was like before you had knee problems; when you were pain free and could enjoy everything life had to offer? It can be that way again. Don’t neglect your problem any longer – don’t wait until it’s too late.

The Jaded Eye…

An Open Letter to Webb Weekly Readers

D

ear Readers: The New Year hasn’t been so good to me. In fact it’s a real bummer. I write this column to you from a hospital bed, and am surrounded by some flowers, a window next to the heliport, and many monitors. I still have an IV needle in my right arm, and I cannot get comfortable. I am also scared. On Tuesday, January 14th, I got up to go to the bathroom at about 1:00 a.m. Fine. Routine. At about 4:00 a.m. I got up to go again, and my left leg wouldn’t move. I thought it was asleep and waited for any tingling. As I tried to stand up, I collapsed. The entire left side of my body was limp and uncontrollable. I began to panic and cry. I tried to crawl to the phone and dial 911, but knocked the phone to the floor. I got a hold of my parents (try dialing a number in the dark, on your back, in panic). In turn, they dialed 911 and the paramedics came. Straight to the Susquehanna Health emergency room. A cat scan, then an MRI revealed a brain hemorrhage. It was a stroke which effected the one side of my body. The blood leakage caused swelling in the brain.

LYCOMING COUNTY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SERVICES

In the emergency room, the look in my parents eyes weren’t reassuring. For some strange reason I think back to the broken wrists, the knocked out teeth, the bruised shins. Please, give me that same look from back then…that everything is going to be OK. But my body is denying me. I cannot control Gerry Ayers my motions. The right side moves, left side is rag doll like. My left foot flops and drags against the floor like it’s not even connected to me. You guys know my routine. Walk, bike, run, lift, swim, tennis. Good heart, good lungs, low body fat. So what gives? Neurosurgeon (and tennis player) Dr. Rajoub tells me it was a fluky thing. Not only where it occurred in my brain, but who it happened to. A weak spot burst in my brain. No headaches, no dizziness, nothing leading up to it. At least that I knew of. The first afternoon at the hospital two physical therapists take me by the underarms and ask me to try to walk with them. I stumble and fall and look nothing like myself. I am humiliated at how this is going. Two days earlier sprinting hills and feeling fantastic. Now staring at the ground and weeping

with reckless abandon. They tell me it’s “OK and normal after a stroke.” I don’t feel “OK.” Using the bathroom is a major issue. Taking a shower is a circus event. You know how they say life can change in seconds? Take it from me, life can change in seconds! I am not even thinking “why me?” but rather thinking to the past few decades of a wonderful life where I could do so many physical activities. Depression starts to rear its ugly head. I need a few Jeff Rauffs to come to my room and talk about comebacks. I mean here’s a guy who gets hit by a car while on his bike, suffers numerous broken bones, and with much physical therapy, returns to do the same vigorous activities before his accident. I’m sure it took time. Lots of time. I guess I’m being impatient. I also need to hear from other stroke victims who made a full recovery. I miss work, I miss being productive. I miss being places where I should be. I am in my room, alone, trying to move my leg. A tad better than yesterday. Using a walker. My father pushed me in a wheelchair outside to get some sun and air today. He’s almost 80. Shouldn’t I be pushing him? My mother tells me to think positive and work hard. I get several texts and calls. That makes me

feel better. Dr. Rajoub tells me I will return to where I was. It just takes time. The staff here is excellent. Totally professional, with smiles to match. They tell me not to quit. They tell me to work the moment for a better future. We do a lot of resistance exercises to see if there is improvement. Guess what? The left knee and hip are starting to move. The left arm is getting stronger. I smile. The left foot still flops around like a lost shoe at the shore. I cry. But today was good. Lots of visitors. Mom, dad, nephew, niece. Paige (my partner) and Patti from work at Fairfield, and her daughter too. Robin from Muncy, and tennis friend and physical therapist Victoria Molesky. My sister in law, Jennifer, hands me 11 month old Amelia. She doesn’t know my condition, and smiles and grins at me. The room is not empty anymore. I glance at the card from Jamie and Josh Pepperman. I hear a therapist walk by and say “That’s good to see, people around him.” So, so true. So guys, stand behind me as I try to stand up. I would cherish any notes or visitors. My appreciation to the entire staff (Breanna and her cheerleader RNs included) at Susquehanna who are treating me like royalty and putting up with my sarcasm. And impatience. Hopefully back home soon, – Gerry

Leaders in our Neighborhood Harry Houdini Returns to Williamsport By Larry Stout

H

arry Houdini is arguably the most famous magician and escape artist in history. In July of 1895, Houdini was a twenty-one year old traveling magician with a group called the Welch Brothers Performers which made a stop in Williamsport. The local paper account states that the entertainment value at the “old fair grounds” was worth much more than the ten cent admission price. The paper noted that the highlight of the show was Houdini doing his mystical act named “Metamorphosis.” Nearly thirty years later, in 1923, Houdini came to town as a special speaker at the Pine Street Methodist Church. The reason for being there was part of a crusade he was pursuing in the later stages of his career to expose spiritist and mediums, especially those who claim to be able to communicate with the dead. At the meeting, he reiterated his standing challenge of $5,000 (nearly $70,000 in today’s dollars) to any medium who could perform one genuine manifestation which he could not duplicate. Toward the end of

his address, Houdini made a note that he had visited the city some three decades before and that “he had never seen any town change as much as Williamsport,” according to the local newspaper account. The fact that such a historical character visited our community and that it made an impression upon him deserves to be remembered. One person who believes that has made Houdini’s legacy his passion — Dick Brookz. A nationally known professional magician himself for some sixty years, Brookz has collected a mountain of memorabilia on the famous magician. One of Houdini’s dreams was to establish a magic show venue in New York City, and Brookz brought this dream to life in 1973 by being an original founder of the famous Magic Towne House in the upper East Side of New York City. Featuring a virtual Who’s Who of the magic world for the next fifteen years, this popular venue was visited by celebrities and the general population alike. It also featured a museum of magic mementos, and Brookz realized he wanted a larger and more permanent site, in particular, to house his Houdini collectables.

on the first floor of City Hall. There is also a movement to add Harry Houdini to the Inspiration Lycoming County mural on Fourth Street in Williamsport. Escape artists might not be thought of as leaders, but Harry Houdini was truly unique. His exploits were so groundbreaking, he left a legacy that has inspired generations that have followed. When people use the expression to “pull a Houdini,” they are acknowledging that sometimes the impossible just might be possible. Dick Brookz is one who feels that this legacy needs to be cherished, and he is bringing that enthusiasm to Williamsport.

So, in 1988, Dick Brookz and a fellow Houdini enthusiast Dorothy Dietrich, opened the Harry Houdini Museum in Scranton, PA, the only building in the world dedicated to magic’s greatest legend. Dorothy Dietrich, one of the greatest female magicians in the world, has been called the “female Houdini” for replicating so many of his tricks. Together, Brookz and Dietrich share a passion to keep the memory of this great performer alive for future generations. Which brings us back to Williamsport and it’s Houdini connection. Mayor Campana is adding a Houdini exhibit to the other notables from the area in the display case

She went a little wild after that, but now she was settled, married with no job prospects and a husband she bitterly fought with. She loved Scott, but she longed for a little excitement and she was determined to find it.

Anna Watson was irritated, exhausted, and scared. Mostly, she was scared because her husband Tom’s ex-wife Rachel – an alcoholic with big problems – was unstable and she kept calling and showing up in their neighborhood. hen Jack and Sarah’s Family Restaurant in Cogan Station opened in 2007, they had no idea how their customers would help to mold their image of the business. About one week after they opened, a trucker came in and said ne noticed the Harley out front. That began a conversation between them and the trucker gave Rooney a plaque for the wall. Shortly thereafter, another person noticed the plaque and said he had something to hang up, also. So, he went to his car and came back with a picture of a soldier. Ever since then, people have come in, noticed the décor, and offered to donate something. As a result, the interior of the restaurant is definitely patriotic. About a year ago, Jack and Sarah Rooney made a decision to begin a program for local wounded Veterans. They were discussing the possible options in their restaurant. Doris Brungard, who works at Woolrich Woolen Mills in Woolrich, PA, overheard them. She told them that Woolrich made a patriotic-based blanket that might be just what they needed for the project. The blanket is a rendition of the American flag, but not a duplicate. In the area of the stars, there is a line of woven stars on the first line, followed by a line of the words, “USA”, then a line of stars, etc. Brungard, agreed to arrange a meeting with the President of Woolrich Woolen

Mills and the Rooneys. As a result of that meeting, Woolrich Mills agreed to donate two of the “Freedom Throw” blankets and also, pledged to sell them more blankets at a reduced rate for the Wounded Veterans. That first “Freedom Throw” was presented to MSGT Greg Lehman, of Linden last May. After that, they began looking for methods of raising funds for their program. They soon realized they were faced with the task of government “hoops” to jump through in such an endeavor. In their search for donors they realized that they must either form their own organization or join one already involved with Veterans. So, Mr. Rooney became a member of the Lycoming County Hometown Heroes, Inc. The thirteenmember Board holds their meetings at the Veteran’s Affairs office on Pine Street, in Williamsport. The president of the Board is MSGT George W. Heiges Jr. (Ret. USAF). Within a few weeks, Rooney was able to acquire a considerable donation from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Foundation, Inc. The Foundation serves as the primary fundraising arm of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Association. When Jim Webb, of Webb Weekly, in South Williamsport learned of the donation, he agreed to match it. Webb has been a staunch supporter of many

In addition to the Wild Game Dinner, there will also be an auction of various items, particularly of an outdoor nature. He said these items include a mountain bike donated by Marty’s Bicycle Shop, several expensive bows, that can be used in competition or hunting, and gift certificates from merchants both local and national. The dinner will also include various delicious side dishes and desserts. He said the cooking chores will be handled by his family and other volunteers. “This is an event that my family and friends really enjoy being a part of and helping to put it on,” Sones said. He asks that those interested in attending the Wild Game Dinner and Auction please preregister so that organizers know how much food to prepare. You can pre-register by contacting Sones at 570-419-4749.

wounded and injured war veterans have to go through when they try to recover from their injuries, so that made me decide that when I got better that I would try and do what I could do for these people who have given so much for their country,” Sones told Webb Weekly. “Three years ago I started the Wild Game and Auction as a way to raise money for the worthy PA Wounded Warriors program. It was a way for me to give back to these very special people.” Sones said the number of people attending the event has gone up each year. “When we first started this we had it in the basement of the church that I belonged to but found that it was too small a place to hold it, so we moved it to the Lairdsville Volunteer Fire Company,” Sones said. “Last year we had more than 150 people attend it and we are hoping for even more this year.”

ep, I’ve been told that on more than one occasion, but I’m really saying it in a nice way! If you haven’t hiked in the last several weeks, now is a great time to do so. If your excuse is that you “don’t know where to go,” then I suggest you head out to State Game Lands 75, as I did yesterday when I went for a leisurely hike that was quite revealing. It was a bluebird day with just a few clouds on the horizon, and as the wind subsided and the temperature rose to a “balmy”29 degrees in the mid-afternoon, I parked my vehicle at a designated parking area and headed out across the creek bottom in search of winter’s telltale signs of any game activity. With some 27,438 acres within the bounds of SGL 75, there would be plenty of places to explore and look for recent movement since last week’s snowfall. The layer of snow from a week ago had become a frozen crust, but last night’s thin layer of new snow would provide indication of more recent activity. I moved upstream alongside the now frozen brook for more than a half mile without seeing any tracks at all, and then began an uphill climb using an old logging road to guide my travels. Midway up the roadway, old tracks of a mature doe and two yearlings cut across my path and continued

uphill, following an old deer path. As the logging road reached a wide bench, it paralleled the rim of the bench and more deer activity was evident by numerous tracks and several areas that were pawed up as they searched for acorns under large mature oaks. There was actually more deer signs than I had anticipated, which was a good thing. But then, several hundred yards later, I saw something I didn’t like. Tracks left by a pair of coyotes now joined the road bed and were evident for quite some distance. One was a larger and heavier male, identifiable as its greater weight caused the tracks to break through the crust below on several occasions. The second one was smaller and lighter in weight, noticeable since it never broke through the crust. Actually, I was pleased to see their tracks, as part of the reason for the hike that day was to locate somewhere to do some coyote hunting during these winter months. Traveling uphill on a well-used deer trail, I joined and followed another logging road along the top of the ridge. I smiled as I came across the tracks of three gobblers, out in search of food. There were two old longbeards and a jake, and they stopped several times to scratch through the crusted snow in search of acorns and beechnuts. Their tracks were two or three days old, and that, I was about to discover was a good thing! Good, because 80 yards later,

opportunity to study the tracks and activity of quite a few different animals. It also helped me locate a good spot to do some coyote and bobcat hunting. Throughout the afternoon, the wind was calm and the warm sun made for a very enjoyable trip in the woods. There is a wide variety of countryside available for hiking throughout State Game Land 75. A map and information is available online, or a detailed map can be picked up at the Pennsylvania Game Commission office at 1566 South Route 44 Highway, south of Jersey Shore. When the wind is calm and the sun is out, take a hike along its trails and roadways and test some of your track reading skills! It will make for a very pleasant day in the woods.

I came across a fresh set of tracks of a mature bobcat, and he too was in search of food! Curious, I followed his tracks across the hilltop, and saw where he twice would hop on top of an elevated log and walk along its length – it is something bobcats like to do as they search for rodents from this “elevated” perch. Returning from the hike, my route took me through a stand of scrub pine trees and some nearby mountain laurel, where I found several old deer beds and the tracks of a red squirrel. The beds were located on the rim of the point of this ridge and it provided a great vantage point for the deer as they rested through the night. All in all, it was a great hike! The exercise was invigorating, and it was a great

new locations in deeper water on the main lake in order to maintain the good catches. Speaking of locations I will be located at the Early Bird Sports Show at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds with my art exhibit this coming weekend so I obviously won’t be pulling any fish up through a six-inch hole in the ice. If you are not out trying to find out where the fish are stop over to the show and say hello. There’s a lot of great outdoor stuff to look at and we can share some deer stories and I can try to update you on the ice fishing front.

structures is generally a good choice. Having ice fished for many years makes picking the right lake and the right spots on the lake a bit easier since past experiences help guide that decision. If it’s perch you are after you will likely want to fish the deeper water near the bottom and a couple of weekends ago that seemed to be the case since most of our catch consisted of perch in the 8-10 inch range. Bluegills were relatively scarce, but last year on the same lake we did well on gills further back in the cove in 8-12 feet of water. Most of the bigger bluegills seemed to be on or near the bottom. Crappies on the other hand will more often than not suspend and schools will come and go as they roam about and here’s where a good sonar unit can really make a big difference. When you spot marks suspended in the water column it often pays to move your presentation up to that location and you may well nab some crappies in doing so. Certainly there can be exceptions to everything I just said; I have indeed taken crappies on the bottom and perch suspended. As the season progresses fish locations can change again. Last year on the same lake where we consistently had good catches of bluegills in 10-12 feet of water we found ourselves hunting

Moose and Making Amends By Jim Webb Jr.

I

remember like it was yesterday. A young grade-schooler in the midst of a growing spurt, running up and down the basketball court at Shick Elementary School. He had long arms and legs, a big head with a crop of dark hair. As he ran he appeared gangly like a fawn trying to get everything working together as one. As this young boy grew into a fine looking young man, he joined the varsity ranks for Coach Ron Insinger as a freshman. Fellow teammate Jackson Kurtz gave him the nickname “Moose”. From this point on that’s what he would be called, with affection of course. When Moose was going through the grade school ranks I was blessed to coach him and a talented group of players. My son Jimmy also played then. We had great fun and success. I believe we traveled to twenty five or so tournaments, winning each one. As Moose matured he gained more and more control of that young body. Most importantly his confidence and toughness also matured. This can be credited to his mom, Joanna, who pushed her young Moose. She wouldn’t allow him to be lazy and not work hard. She made sure he worked on his game which included toughness. I remember her telling Lynn Datres who coached with me to “kick him right in the rear of his moose if needed. Make him tougher, make him hustle. No soft Moose living in my house.” I might be

I continued to help as an assistant coach. Folks like Ryan Cioffi, Matt Anderson and Ronny Emery were the head guys who continued the Moosetration process. Lynn, Kevin and I continued with travel ball, the boys winning their last tournament at Lycoming College as eighth-graders before moving on to CI and high school. Moose and his teammates ran the court like demons. This group are now seniors at Loyalsock. Moose, if you didn’t know it, is Ben Sosa.

handled it the best way. Everyone deserves a second chance; I can’t imagine not giving a young person a second chance. A chance to learn and become a better person and make things right. I feel the punishment is fair and we move on.” CI, you got it right just like Coach Saban. You have always loved and supported your players and hopefully those involved learn from it, become stronger because of it and succeed at what is most important. The journey of life. One last thought, the person who has a problem with understanding the importance of a second chance and forgiveness is walking a karmic tight rope. Tip of the cap to Moose and his mom. to find things that provide him self-worth, joy and identity for the good. As far as CI and his disciplinary action of his four Lancers. Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban recently said the following at a press conference I watched. When asked about a player that found trouble; his reply, “Athletes are always held to higher standards. The first thing I get asked when a player gets in trouble “Is he off the team? A 19 or 20-year-old makes a mistake and gets into trouble and you want me to give up on him? Where’s he going to go? What’s he going to do? That’s not who I am or what I think coaching is about. What lesson would I be teaching?” When CI and I discussed what had happened it was obviously troubling to him. I could tell by the tone in his voice, “I don’t know if I

always be found shooting at his outside hoop near my house, scored 23 points in his first start versus Montoursville. Michael’s play has been outstanding; he is a star in the waiting. He and Marcus can run like the wind and defend. Brennan Casale has stepped in and stepped up, he is solid and I’m overjoyed for him to get this opportunity. He has earned it. He is a senior who will do whatever is asked. Tommy Baggett is Mr. Consistency. Like Brennan he epitomizes team. He plays bigger than he is and can shoot like Kevin Baggett, his dad; we’ve been waiting for this. Shoot the rock Tommy. He did versus Mount Carmel to the tune of a school record 10 threes. Tommy versus Kevin in Horse at Lapoint’s court in the snow. My money is still on Kevin. Let’s not forget Kyle Datres. I have a new nickname for him, “Gorilla”. As in Gorilla Glue, Kyle holds everything together especially during adversity. Now back to “The Congundrum”. Brennan Gundrum was a fine young athlete who at age 12 had this and almost his life taken away by cancer. The fight he went through and the problems he continues to go through could never be understood unless you were in his or his parents shoes. My prayers go out to Gunny and his family that he will find peace and straighten out his life. This is not an excuse for his actions but compassion for Brennan and what he has had to face. In losing his ability to participate in athletics to this dreaded disease, there was a need for something to fill the void and provide him the feeling of being needed and popular. He made bad choices. What Gunny now needs is support and prayer. He needs

I am very proud of him. He has worked and become an All State caliber basketball player. He has saved his best play for a time of adversity and hopefully is a time looked back on as a reference point of when the Lancers forged themselves into a great team. Moose has been averaging about 20 points per game since what I refer to as “The Congundrum” occurred, I’ll get to that later, he has elevated his game and played great at both ends of the court. I asked CI to give me the lowdown on Ben’s play. “He runs the court as well as anyone I’ve ever had. Pound for pound and inch for inch is as good as any big man.” See, Moose only finished out at 6’2” and is usually playing against much larger folks inside. CI also added “His ability to use both hands and both sides of the basket make him tough to stop even for much bigger players.” I agree, Moose runs like a deer and finishes what he started. He has been flawless around the basket recently and is fun to watch! Now back to “The Congundrum”. Former classmate Brennan Gundrum, Ben, Omar Little, Michael Pastore and Christian Diggs got themselves into a little, big trouble. Little as in how it turned out, big as it could have derailed a Lancer season of high expectations. As I stated, Ben’s play has been outstanding since he served his one game discipline. Omar and Michael were each disciplined four games, while Christian also sat out a game. The teams play since this occurred has been athletic, energized, and defensively tenacious. Sophomore Marcus Williams has excelled, he reminds me of Marc Graves of 1984 Millionaire State Title fame. Fellow sophomore Michael Lapoint, who can

f you happen to be a country music fan you’ve most likely heard the song and know the lyrics of the 2009 Trace Adkins hit ‘Marry for Money.’ For those not familiar with the tune, one of its verses goes like this: “I’m gonna marry for money, I’ll be so damn rich it ain’t funny. I’m gonna have me a trust fund, yacht club, hot tub piece of the pie. Find me a sweet sugar mama, with a whole lot of zeros and commas. Don’t care if she really loves me, she can even be ugly, I’m gonna marry for money. While the song’s message may not be the one matrimony and commitment should be built upon, its catchy tune and irreverent implication certainly have applicable overtones to the big-time NCAA collegiate scene; particularly Division I football which just concluded last week the first-ever four-team playoff to crown the National Champion. There is no doubt the mini-tournament was a rousing success. Television ratings were up, the public’s interest was piqued and as the beancounters tally the loot from the January 12 gathering at Jerry’s world you can’t help but imagine thoughts of an eight-team playoff are already dancing in the heads of the many who would profit from such an extravaganza. Whatever your stance on the ‘bigger is

better’ theory the geographical-skewed conference realigning frenzy of the past few years has maintained the $-sign as its common distinguishable logo. Allegiance to tried & true rivalries of the past have gone the way of gas stations that wash our windows and women wearing hats to church. The NCAA’s slogan should best be coined as ‘if it doesn’t pay, we won’t play.’ There are probably many folks around who don’t know that Penn State/Pitt, Oklahoma/Nebraska, Texas/Texas A&M and similar such backyard shootouts were very big deals. The old Southwest Conference may have been the epitome of rivalry and proximity. Seven Texasbased schools; Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, SMU and Rice, along with neighboring Arkansas comprised the fan-friendly league where every game truly did matter. Now those former rivals are dispatched to a variety of far-flung conference alliances. To a lesser degree, and certainly not driven by money, the existing future of the PHAC, more commonly known at the Heartland Conference around these parts, may be in for a big shakeup. Word has it the Conference had notified its member schools they had until January 15 to state their intentions about staying in the conference or striking out on their own. Seems there

is considerable di s conte nt, especially with the league’s smaller schools, regarding competitive balance and league scheduling. Can’t say as I blame them. Seems Scott as though there Lowery was some sort of disturbance in the Boston Harbor years ago with some tea getting dumped overboard by some scoundrels who were seeking their voice in how things were being handled. The premise leading to the founding of the PHAC was sound in theory. Twentyfour schools, divided equally into three eight-team divisions based upon school enrollment size. Schools in each division would all play the other seven, with considerations given every two years to realigning divisions based upon changes in enrollment figures. Some league official was given the assignment to draw up the schedules for the various divisions, send them out to the schools and say ‘play ball.’ Oh-oh, tea bags overboard. Does size matter? Not in all instances. Southern Columbia football, Loyalsock and St. John Neumann basketball and Mt. Carmel girls’ basketball are prime examples as to why league’s determined only by enrollment size look much better

on paper than on the playing surface. The successes of these schools in these sports, and similar other examples, have enjoyed are to be recognized and applauded. But you also can’t blame the other guy, for whom the current system isn’t working. CMVT in AAA – are you kidding? Yes, history does have a way of repeating itself. Just like the old Southwest Conference, the local West Branch Conference was long thought to be the ideal league. Proximity and rivalries were all over the place. Montgomery, Muncy, Hughesville, Montoursville, Loyalsock, South Williamsport, Warrior Run and BaldEagle-Nittany were participants. Still today you will hear occasional comments asking why we can’t bring back the West Branch. The answer to that is the same reason the PHAC is facing its own waterloo; the desire for more equal competition among its members. The Branch broke because some of the small schools grew weary of getting their heads handed to them by superior athletic programs. It was not about size per say, but about a desire for the athletes of their schools to line up on a more equal playing field. Maybe the time has come for the HAC to get whacked. Let the school’s determine who they want to play on a sport-by-sport basis. The playoffs will determine which teams are the best. The regular season will give them a chance to compete on their own level. Not rocket science. Just a thought.
