5 Ways to Redefine Your Outdoor Space

inter’s coldest days make you appreciate spring and summer, as well as the warm afternoons spent outdoors enjoying these seasons. And when the time comes, there’s no better place to relax than in your own backyard. If your space isn’t all it could be, though, this is the perfect time for a little outdoor upgrade. Below are five projects you can tackle on your own to reinvent your backyard and turn it into the space you always knew it could be. * Landscape for the year. Landscaping provides a focal point in your yard, but don’t just landscape with the warmer months in mind - include plants for each season. Showcase blooming flowers and hostas in the warmer months, and pair them with evergreen conifers for a look that’s inviting all year long. * One-of-a-kind planter boxes. Showcase your most beautiful blooms or delicious herbs in planter boxes made from Western Red Cedar. Western Red Cedar is ideal for planter boxes because it is naturally rot, decay and insect resistant. Plus, building the box is easy. You can learn how to build planter boxes of your own at Realcedar.com. * Sitting beside the fire. A fire pit is a great way to extend your backyard use into the evening hours, and giving the pit a professional look is easier than

you think. Start by measuring the pit area and then build your wall of pavers. Surround the pit itself with gravel, additional pavers or another nonflammable substance, then add some comfy chairs and prepare to enjoy. * The all-in-one pergola. Whether you’re looking for a little shade, a centerpiece for the yard or the perfect spot to entertain, a pergola delivers. Building the pergola out of a lighter wood like Western Red Cedar will make the material easier to handle for any DIYer, and the appearance and smell of Western Red Cedar ensures your pergola will blend in naturally with the rest of your yard. You can find instructions for building your own pergola at Realcedar.com. * Let there be light. Enjoy your backyard any time of day with just a little lighting. Solar-powered path lights are a low-maintenance way to showcase your new landscaping, and hanging track lighting can bring an evening glow to your pergola. Finally, don’t forget tiki torches. Adding a couple will give your backyard a rustic feel and keep the mosquitos away at the same time. What could be better than that? Your backyard is what you make of it, so why not make it great? Any of these projects will noticeably enhance your backyard.

S

pring is cleaning season. You’ve opened the curtains to let in the sunshine, and every cleaning product you have in the house is primed and ready for action. The whole family has been enlisted to help. The youngest is in charge of wiping all the cobwebs off the floorboards. You have the older children giving the windows a good scrubbing, and your partner is assigned to hit all the hard-to-reach spots with a duster and vacuum hose. No room, piece of furniture or square inch of the house will be spared! The idea behind spring cleaning is to make your home healthier. You’re removing the dirt, dander and dust particles that have accumulated over the winter months, as well as organizing everything for a more efficient lifestyle. But it can be easy to forget that cleaning the air is just as important as the rest of the house. Indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports. And did you know that many of the cleaning supplies that will make your floors, windows and furniture sparkle in the spring sunlight can actually pollute your indoor air? Air quality is very important for homeowners. In fact, 34 percent of Americans are concerned about the air quality in their homes, according to a 2014 study by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Additionally, some moms have to worry about health issues

like asthma and allergies within the family. Clean indoor air is very important for helping to prevent exposure to triggers like irritants and allergens for children and adults who suffer from these conditions. For those families without these health concerns, clean indoor air should still be a part of the campaign to help your family live as healthily as possible. The study found that more than half of Americans put a least a moderate effort into improving the quality of their indoor air. Yet many cleaning products are loaded with chemicals to help them sanitize or disinfect. These chemicals might be good for industrial cleaning, but unfortunately, they often aren’t so great for indoor air quality at home. AAFA reviews and certifies household cleaning products like vacuums and cleaning solutions that are more suitable for people with asthma and allergies, as well as anyone wanting to promote healthy and clean indoor air in their home. For families with a loved one suffering from asthma or allergies, this is very important because poor indoor air can trigger asthma attacks or allergy flair-ups. The asthma & allergy friendly(TM) Certification Mark is only awarded to cleaning products that meet AAFA’s tough Certification Standards. So as you plan your household springcleaning campaign, be sure to consider Certified asthma & allergy friendly products that will clean your house, and help keep your indoor air clean as well.

It’s Going to Blow: Must-Know Tips for Homeowners Replacing Water Heaters

S

ome 37 million residential water heaters gave up the ghost and were replaced over the past five years, according to estimates by the U.S. Department of Energy. While some things get better with age, water heaters aren’t among them. In fact, the average life expectancy for a new water heater is 10 to 15 years, with the occasional stoic dinosaur making it two decades or more. If your home’s water heater is approaching - or has surpassed - the decade mark, you may be looking at replacing it in 2015. Whether you’re proactive about it or you wait until the appliance fails completely, there are several things you should know about water heater technology, energy efficiency, cost savings and environmental impact. * Being proactive pays - in more ways than one. Replacing an aging water heater is an investment, and you may be tempted to put it off until absolutely necessary. Replacing an old water heater before it stops working, however, has many advantages. When a water heater fails, it can leak and cause damage to your home

and belongings, especially if your heater is housed in a finished basement, closet or attic. If you wait until you’re completely without hot water to begin shopping for a new water heater, you may find yourself too hurried to comparison shop. * Learn the different types of water heaters and compare costs. Two basic types of water heaters are available for residential use: conventional storage heaters that keep water hot in a storage tank, and tankless water heaters that directly heat water as you need it. A residential, electric-powered storage water heater usually costs as little as a few hundred dollars. Gas heaters generally cost more - some models are upward of $1,000 - but cheaper natural gas prices can offset the added cost in the long run. Tankless heaters are comparably priced, but often are more expensive to install until recently. More on that later. * A more energy-efficient water heater can save you money in the long-term. Heating water accounts for nearly 18 percent of the average home’s overall energy use - the second largest energy expense - and costs a household $200

to match the size of the water heater to the size of the home and the needs of its inhabitants. The National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA) which goes into effect in April - will make size an even bigger consideration for homeowners replacing water heaters this year. Water heaters will have to meet a higher energy factor rating, which will require storage heaters to be larger. If your heater is in a tight spot, such as an attic accessed through pull-down stairs or in a utility closet, a larger storage heater might not fit in the available space. Tankless water heaters are smaller, and they may be a solution for those with space problems. * DIY or DI-don’t? What should you do? Installing a water heater isn’t for novices, no matter what style of heater you choose. Errors can be costly, and the savings of DIY may end up costing more in the long run if you make a mistake. It pays to have a professional do the work.

to $600 per year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. A newer, ENERGY STAR-rated water heater will consume less energy to heat water and reduce the amount you spend on utility bills. Energy-efficient options include solar powered, high-efficiency ENERGY STAR gas or electric storage heaters and tankless heaters. * Tankless water heaters are more “doable” than ever before. Because they heat water only when you need it, rather than keeping it hot in a tank, tankless water heaters are more energyefficient. Still, many homeowners have shied away from switching to a tankless heater because of installation costs. Existing water and gas lines used for storage heaters don’t line up neatly and easily with most tankless water heaters, increasing labor costs. Tankless water heater manufacturer Noritz has introduced a unit - the Noritz EZTR40 Residential Tankless Water Heater - that solves the problem. Designed to replace a conventional 40-gallon water heater, the EZTR40 can use the vent, water connection and gas line already in place without moving anything to achieve a connection. The reduced labor means it costs less for homeowners to have the tankless water heater installed. * Size matters, and it’s about to matter even more. It’s always been important

nstalling or fixing a faucet can seem like a daunting task. But, in many cases homeowners can update the kitchen and bath themselves - all you need are the right tools, good judgment and a little time to devote to the project. Here are the top five plumbing questions plumbing customer service agents receive most often, and if you are ever unsure, a licensed plumber can be an exceptional resource. 1. Does it take long to install a faucet? The toughest part of the job can be removing the old faucet. Before starting the project, make sure you have the essential items to install the new faucet easily. Products to keep in your toolbox include: a crosshead and regular screwdriver; adjustable wrench or basin wrench for hard-to-reach areas; flashlight; pliers; plumber’s putty; thread seal tape; and an Allen wrench. Once you’ve checked your list, it should take about an hour, but that will vary based on your level of previous installation experience. 2. Can I replace a two-handle faucet with a single-handle model? In many cases, mounting hardware

and flexible hookups will let you replace your current two-handle model with a single-handle one. Many singlehandle faucets are available with deck plates to provide an attractive covering. There are advantages to having a single-handle - many pulldown or pullout faucets are designed with a single-handle, allowing homeowners to easily clean around the kitchen sink. Also, it’s easier to turn off one handle when completing tasks in the kitchen. 3. Is there another option for a kitchen faucet other than a standard mechanical faucet? And what are the benefits? For ultimate convenience in the kitchen, consider a hands-free faucet that senses what you’re trying to accomplish. Imagine having raw chicken on your hands as you’re making dinner; just place your hands under a MotionSense faucet from Moen and the water automatically turns on - as soon as you move your hands away, the water turns off. Do you need the water left on for a longer period, like when you’re washing dishes? Just wave your hand over the top of the faucet to activate

faucet. Use extra care when cleaning as harsh chemicals can damage the finish and may void any warranty. 5. What causes a faucet to leak or drip? Having a leaky faucet is annoying but it’s something that shouldn’t be ignored. There are several reasons for drips but usually it’s a simple solution. Leaks are often caused by internal mechanisms that need to be replaced such as a scratched or torn cartridge, O-ring or grommet. Typically, a cartridge replacement - which is both inexpensive and easy - will correct this type of leak. Try troubleshooting a few options and if there are still problems, it may be time to call a professional plumber. These answers should help during your next remodel or repair and provide you with years of attractive and convenient water delivery. Always remember, should you ever need help, a friendly customer service expert is only a phone call away.

the Wave Sensor. Plus, it’s available in a variety of styles like Moen’s transitionally styled Arbor kitchen faucet, or a traditional style like the Brantford kitchen faucet to coordinate with your design preference. “MotionSense was thoughtfully designed based on consumers’ behaviors and preferences in the kitchen,” says Tom Tylicki, Moen senior wholesale kitchen product manager. “Moen’s technology simply requires a wave of the hand or movement beneath the spout, no need to touch or tap the faucet, to experience the benefits of MotionSense. It intuitively understands exactly what you’re trying to do, and responds immediately to your needs.” 4. What can I use to clean my faucet? Always dry any water from the faucet surface to avoid mineral deposits. To clean, use mild soap and water and dry with a soft cloth. A natural cleaner using 50 percent white vinegar and 50 percent water is great for removing hard water stains but make sure the faucet is rinsed thoroughly. Avoid abrasive cleansers or sponges, such as those used for toilet bowls, to remove tarnish and rust. Some finishes make cleaning easier. For example, Moen’s exclusive Spot Resist Stainless finish helps resist fingerprints and water spots, maintaining the brilliance of the

ave you been putting off some seemingly hard-tohandle home improvement projects? If so, there’s still time to tackle do-it-yourself tasks like a pro - from painting high ceilings and stairwells to repairing garage and basement floors. With the right tips and tools, you can accomplish these home improvements in a snap. Reach new heights When it comes to sprucing up foyers and great rooms, painting may appear to be a challenge for most homeowners - especially when it comes to the ceiling. But it doesn’t have to be. Start by covering furniture and floors with drop cloths or plastic sheeting, or removing furniture from the room entirely. Start the painting process from the top. A fresh coat of paint on a ceiling can transform a room. Grab a ladder and be mindful of necessary safety precautions. Before painting, shield your eyes by wearing protective goggles. Lightly sand your ceiling and remove any dust with a damp rag or sponge. Then, edge around your ceiling with a paint brush to line the perimeter of the ceiling.

Looking for an easier way to paint the main portion of the ceiling? Select a lightweight and durable extension pole such as the new Purdy Power Lock extension pole, which eliminates pole-to-frame wobbling. The Power Lock pole features a universal tip that connects to nearly all roller frames and rollers, including Purdy Marathon rollers. Start painting in one corner of the ceiling and form a “V,” then roll the paint out and around. Work in 4-foot sections and always roll into the wet edge of the section you were previously painting. Wait for the ceiling to dry completely and apply another coat. Safely painting stairwells Many two-story foyers are accompanied by stairwells with equally tall walls. These high-traffic areas are very visible, yet may be the last place homeowners care to spend time updating. While most areas of the home can be painted with a roller or brush and a basic stepstool, stairwells may pose a safety risk. There are few ways to carefully cross this potentially tricky task off of your to-do list.

mixture. For tougher stains, consider using a pressure washer. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the area. Once the floor is clean and dry, repair any cracks in the concrete using concrete/ mortar-repair compound for smaller cracks or concrete patch for larger ones. Next, you will want to apply a thin primer coat using a paint roller attached to an extension pole like the Purdy Power Lock to ensure you don’t paint yourself into a corner. After eight hours, start with a coat of the floor paint and allow the first coat to dry for one full day before applying the second. Wait about 24 hours before walking or driving on the newly painted surface. By following these helpful tips and using the proper tools, you can complete lingering projects in no time. You’ll then be able to enjoy great looking, long-lasting results.

A sturdy extension pole that allows for smooth length adjustments is a must. Power Lock extension poles enable the user to safely and effectively paint areas in and out of reach. You can also utilize an extension ladder on the side walls of a stairwell with a ladder leveler. Simply place one leg of the ladder on one step and the other leg, with the ladder leveler attached, on the step below it. Adjust the ladder leveler so that your ladder is resting evenly, and you’re ready to update the walls and ceiling in this space. If you find yourself in a spot where the results are less than ideal or the job is simply too complex, don’t be afraid to reach out to a professional for assistance. Repainting basement and garage floors Has repairing and/or repainting the floor of your garage or basement made your to-do list for years but never seems to be your No. 1 priority? Make this year the one where this project gets done. First, pick up protective eyewear and gloves for the job as it will involve paints and cleaners, and be sure the area is well ventilated. Before beginning, it is best to remove stains by using a three-parts water to one-part bleach

athroom remodels are one of the most popular home improvement projects and they provide impressive return on investment. While plenty of focus goes into selecting the perfect tile or ideal shower surround, there’s one critical area that too often is overlooked: the lighting. To make the most out of your remodel and ensure a space that is as functional as it is fashionable, it’s important to understand the purpose of different types of lighting and how each influences the style and usefulness of the bathroom. A surprising number of bathrooms have critically poor lighting that not only detracts from their design, but makes it more difficult to do daily tasks Whether you have a petite powder room or a grand master bath, there are four main types of lighting you should consider: ambient, task, accent and natural. Ambient lighting Ambient lighting is the main source of illumination and is fundamental to a solid bathroom lighting plan. Also known as general lighting, ambient lights are typically installed overhead and provide lighting for safety and overall comfort. Recessed lights, wall-mounted fixtures

and small chandeliers have become popular options for bathroom ambient lighting. Many people choose to install dimmers for the main source of lighting so they can adjust the illumination depending on what they are doing; brighter is used for quick showers and softer lighting is used for soaking in the tub. Task lighting Task lighting is absolutely necessary for daily grooming activities like putting on makeup and shaving. Typically located by the mirrors, quality task lighting is free of glare and shadows, and it will never strain the eyes. High-end mirrors like the Reception mirror from Robern feature built-in premium task lighting. With a sleek design and open storage, the mirror features fluorescent vertical task lighting at an ideal light value that simplifies grooming tasks. Pair with the M Series Cabinet for a mixture of open and closed storage that is lit on the inside and comes with a nightlight. Finish with a Robern Adorn freestanding vanity with Digital Wood design for the ultimate functional bathroom focal point. By coordinating finishes, lighting and design aesthetics of different Robern pieces, orientations can be created to meet

Fortunately, thanks to ambient, task and accent lighting, natural light is not a necessity. But some homeowners like the option of natural light and a skylight can be a simple solution. Skylights allow sunlight in during daylight hours without jeopardizing any privacy, plus they can be installed with shades for optional closure if desired. Natural light from sources like skylights can be particularly inviting near the bathtub. If you plan to remodel your bathroom soon, you can take your upgrades to a whole new level with the right lighting. Consider how you will use the space, what you want to highlight, and your personal preferences to create a bathroom lighting plan you’ll love for years to come.

specific functional needs for the ultimate in bathroom customization. Accent lighting To add dramatic visual interest and call attention to certain objects in the bathroom, use accent lighting. These types of lights artistically highlight special objects, like paintings, plants, sculptures or architectural detailing. Accent lights are typically smaller and include a shield that allows you to direct the light on the desired object. Wall-mounted picture lights, halogen spotlights and table lamps are a few examples of accent lighting. Natural lighting Due to privacy concerns, many bathrooms do not have any natural light sources.

Tips for Choosing the Right Window For Your Kitchen Remodel

W

hat are the hottest updates for homes in 2015? The kitchen is one of the most popular rooms in the home to remodel, and for good reason. According to HGTV and Trulia, a kitchen update is one of the secrets to selling your home. When it comes to remodeling your kitchen you must consider many aspects - cabinets, counters, floors and appliances - but you may not have thought about windows. According to Remodeling.com’s 2015 Cost Vs. Value Report, window replacement - whether wood, vinyl or fiberglass - provides a good return on investment compared to other replacement

projects, increasing the value of your home financially and aesthetically. So whether you’re making small updates or completely gutting your old kitchen, including window replacement in your project is a smart addition. Here are three key elements to keep in mind when choosing a window for your kitchen: Style Kitchen windows are often placed above counters or sinks, making them hard to reach and prone to moisture. Choosing a window style that is easy to open and close, such as an awning, sliding or casement, is a smart move. Awning windows - which can be pulled in or pushed out - are perfect for ventilation, which

quality look of painted wood. Vinyl windows are easy to care for, don’t require painting or staining, and stay looking great for years. However, if wood makes more sense for you and the style of your home, then make sure to select a finish that will hold up against stains and moisture, and be prepared to do a little more cleaning and up-keep. Features and options Whether your new kitchen is traditional, modern or rustic, your new windows should complement the space. Window designs offer a variety of features including colors, hardware and grilles. Pella’s Designer Series windows even offer a between-the-glass solution that keeps blinds and shades located behind sinks from getting splashed. With so many options to choose from it’s easy to design a window that’s unique to you and the style of your kitchen.

can be especially helpful in a hot kitchen. Since hot air from the oven or stove typically rises, awning style windows perform the best when placed close to the ceiling or above eyelevel. Sliding or casement windows - which use a crank out method for opening and closing - are two good options for hard to reach areas, like above the counters or behind the kitchen sink. Pella motorized blinds and shades are also ideal for hard to reach window locations and can be controlled with the touch of a button. Material type With window placement above counters or sinks, moisture and staining can occur, so choosing an easy-to-clean material like vinyl or fiberglass, is equally important. Fiberglass windows can withstand extreme heat and cold, are energy efficient and can have the same

or many homeowners the biggest utility bill is electricity. Heating and cooling the home makes up nearly half of electricity costs, but the next biggest source is the water heater. Water heaters can account for up to 25 percent of total household energy use. Taking steps to improve the energy efficiency of a home with better insulation and more efficient furnaces and air conditioners can reduce energy costs significantly, as can making sure water heaters are operating properly. However, purchasing a high efficiency water heater does little good if the environment in which it operates is not right. The main culprit in reducing the efficiency of water heaters is hard water. Nearly 90 percent of American homes have hard water which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. These minerals cause scaling, a buildup that clogs waterlines and plumbing forcing appliances to work harder and operate less efficiently. Hard water can reduce the efficiency of water heaters and increase electricity costs by as much as 48 percent according to the Battelle Memorial Institute. The problem can be particularly severe with electric water heaters. These can accumulate up to 30 pounds of calcium carbonate, a rock-like scale, eventually damaging the heating element which

will have to be replaced. The cost of hard water is not higher just because of reduced energy efficiency and higher electric bills; hard water also damages appliances like water heaters, dish washers, shower heads and faucets. These must be repaired and replaced more often as a result. To determine if you have hard water, look for spots and scale build-up on fixtures. “A less obvious indication is the lack of that luxury feeling of a hot shower you get at a nice hotel,” says Michael Mecca of Performance Water Products. “That feeling is not because of the nice towels and soaps. It’s because nice hotels use soft water not only for their guests’ benefit but also to protect their investments in boilers, piping and fixtures.” Kitchens benefit from soft water as well because soft water is up to 12 times more effective at cleaning dishes than increasing the amount of detergent used. Researchers also found that for washing machines, the most important factor in removing stains from clothing was water softness. Reduction of water hardness was up to 100 times more effective at stain removal than increasing the detergent dose or washing with hotter water. In fact, soft water can reduce soap use by as much as half. Many water treatment companies offer free tests to homeowners to measure

The only way to truly remove the calcium and magnesium from household water systems is with a salt-based water softener. These remove the scaling in the pipes entirely by running the incoming hard water through a resin filter that traps the calcium and magnesium in the water as well as any iron, manganese or radium ions. It then replaces them with sodium ions. A salt-based water softener is one home improvement that will not only pay for itself but add value to a home. A properly sized quality water softener appliance can save a homeowner thousands of dollars over its life in reduced soap and detergent costs, electricity, efficiency and extended life for expensive appliances.

the degree of hardness in the water and offer appropriate systems that fit. “Hardness in water can vary widely in some parts of the country and pipe size, number of bathrooms, number of people in the house, types of showerheads and intended use all need to be considered for the right system,” says Mecca. “Wells in particular are susceptible to hard water since municipal water departments often take care of the worst offenders such as iron-manganesehydrogen sulfide. Even if you get municipal water you likely still have calcium and other hard water deposits and can benefit from a water softener. Systems for well water will cost a little more but it is well worth it,” he adds.

he real estate market has improved across much of the country, but homeowners thinking about listing their homes this summer need to stay competitive to attract buyers. Buyers are looking for long-term homes, ones they want to stay in for years while raising their children, or settling down and retiring. To prepare your home for listing - or simply to enjoy it a few years longer - check out these top five home improvement projects you can do yourself to make your home more attractive to buyers: 1. Give the front door a new look - The front door sets the tone for your home’s curb appeal and security, and it signals how well you maintain everything else. Buyers will be walking into your home via the front door, so be sure to give them a good first impression. If your door is in good shape, you might just need to give it a refreshing new coat of paint or new hardware. But if it’s seen some wear and tear over the years, consider replacing it with a steel door - one that will show buyers your home is safe. 2. Update the most-used entryway While the front door needs curb appeal, the garage door is traditionally the mostused door in the home. Old wooden garage doors will start to sag and the paint will peel, giving your home a rundown look. Replacing this door with an insulated steel door will not only improve

the exterior look of your home, but also keep the garage space warmer. Finishing off the garage can also be a big draw for buyers, but you probably won’t be able to recoup as much of the expense as you would by replacing only the garage door. 3. Add additional living space - You might not think about adding a deck as the same thing as adding an extra room to the house, but if you’re selling your home during the warmer months, that’s how buyers will see it. They’ll be able to picture themselves enjoying breakfast and picnic dinners outside, or curling up on a lounge chair with a good book on a summer afternoon. To make your deck a good selling feature, consider using ProWood Dura Color, a color-treated wood that retains its color for years. This means your buyers can easily move into your house and can enjoy the space without the annual chore of staining. Realtor.com estimates that homeowners can recoup 87 percent of the investment of adding a deck when they sell. 4. Create a bathroom retreat - As the smallest room in the house, the bathroom tends to cost the least to remodel. If you have a guest or master bath that can use a little help to transform into a relaxing oasis, take the opportunity to replace the flooring, add cushy rugs, paint the walls and replace the accessories with more modern styles. Faucets, showerheads, the mirror and even the toilet can all

or pre-built panels. The cedar-tone or redwood-tone colorant driven deep into the wood fibers will stand up to the sun’s harsh rays and won’t gray out over time, unlike cedar fencing. You can match it to the deck coloring for a beautiful accent look that connects the colors in your backyard.

be upgraded with water-saving and stylish designs. Buyers will take note of a maintenance-free bath, making your home one they’ll remember as move-in ready. 5. Turn the backyard into a private paradise - Buyers will be visualizing themselves in your backyard when touring your home. They’re looking to see how quiet and secure the space is. Consider adding a beautiful wooden fence to enhance the privacy. It will make the home attractive to families with children and pets, and for couples who aren’t interested in having a conversation with the neighbors every time they go outside. To make your fence an attractive selling feature of the home, consider using ProWood Dura Color fence pickets

ust as tasteful, well-chosen jewelry can turn an unexciting outfit into a stylish, eye-catching ensemble, carefully applied hardwood mouldings and trimwork can transform a plain-Jane interior into an interesting - even beautiful - space. Today’s newly built houses often lack any sort of carved-wood ornamentation. Many older homes have lost their traditional decorative details through successive modernizing renovations. To transform strippeddown to charming, and ordinary to characterful, homeowners are incorporating decorative millwork to enhance their interior design. While there is an almost infinite variety of hardwood mouldings and trims, the pros at the American Hardwood Information Center, www. Hardwoodinfo.com, and most design experts, recognize the following most basic categories: * Baseboards, which run at the foot of walls and act as an elongated pedestal, are both aesthetic and practical. They visually anchor the wall to the floor and at the same time protect it from everyday low-impact abuse such as kids scooting around in toy cars.

* Crown mouldings, which run between the walls and the ceiling, soften the abrupt transition between wall and ceiling. * Casings, the trim surrounding door and window openings, define a wall opening and help connect the spaces being joined. “Our clients are attracted to the enduring quality and ageless appeal of hardwood moulding,” says architect Jeff Murphy, principal of Murphy & Co. Design, a Buffalo, Minnesotabased firm. “For them, it’s the heart of the home - something they see and touch each day. Done right, it will last forever and always be in style.” For architect Tim Button of New York City-based Stedila Design, hardwood mouldings are appropriate in any room in the home, but he also says, “I think wood trim often makes its biggest impact in an entry hall where high ceilings allow for largescale crown mouldings.” And he’s a fan of using stained-wood mouldings in bathrooms, “because it brings warmth to what can be a somewhat clinical space.” Edina, Minnesota-based architect Meriwether Felt agrees, having

interior, so they must be chosen with great care. If too small and plain, they’ll look skimpy and undernourished; too large and ostentatious and they’ll overwhelm the space. If in doubt, consult a design professional. Before the Civil War, American hardwood moulding was made by hand, so it tended to be simple, elegant and expensive. In the later 19th Century, methods of mass production enabled builders to deck out even modest houses with affordable wood trim in ever-more-complex profiles. The 20th Century saw decorative simplifications of the Arts and Crafts style, emphasizing clean lines, unfussy forms and the

inherent beauty of natural wood. This was followed by the Art Deco and Modernist movements, which further streamlined or completely eliminated applied architectural ornament such as mouldings and trims. Today, tastes tend to be eclectic, and whether you install an elaborately carved crown moulding featuring acanthus leaves and egg-and-dart detailing or an elegantly austere profile comprising nothing more than a graceful S-curve, will depend on personal preference and the overall style of your home. No matter what your architectural preferences might be, you can

transform a plain-Jane interior into a distinctive, characterful environment by incorporating hardwood mouldings and trimwork into your home’s design. Visit the American Hardwood Information Center, www. hardwoodInfo.com, and be inspired.

installed stained-cherry mouldings, trims, and casings in the master bath of a home she renovated. “The client asked for a luxurious yet elegant feeling and the cherry fit the bill perfectly. The stained wood warms up the bathroom and provides richness.” The size of the trimwork and the complexity of its profile will be determined by the size and style of the space in which it’s being installed; the larger and more traditional the room, the bigger and more ornate the trim. Crown mouldings in particular have a profound and sometimes unexpected effect on how people perceive the scale, proportions and character of an

5 Easy Kitchen and Bath Upgrades That Take Only Hours to Complete

D

o your kitchen and bathrooms look a bit drab? If you don’t have the time or budget for a full remodel, there are still many simple updates you can do to refresh these spaces and invigorate each with impressive style. From affordable faucet updates to pretty paints, each takes one day or less to complete, instantly providing a dramatic effect. Freshen the faucet Almost anyone who enters the bathroom or kitchen will use the faucet, which means it’s a functional focal point of the space. Installing a new faucet is a simple way to redefine interior design and reflect your own personal style. The new line of Kohler faucets available at Home Depot offers exceptional quality at an affordable price. For example, set the ambience in your bathroom with the Georgeson line of faucets, inspired by the Gatsby era with chic detailing and unique shapes to provide a decorative, eclectic touch. For those who prefer traditional silhouettes, the Mistos kitchen faucet’s soft lines and classic aesthetic provide

a timeless, upscale look. Update hardware and accessories Cabinet hardware and other accessories do for a room what jewelry does for an outfit - they provide the finishing touches that really elevate the space. Fortunately, it’s simple and economical to swap out dated hardware for new handles, knobs and pulls. Popular metal finishes include brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze and chrome. For bathrooms, update accessories to match your new Kohler faucet - each line includes coordinating accessories like towel bars, showerheads and tub fillers. Experiment with paint Paint is one of the most affordable ways to dramatically change the look and energy of a space. If you have dated tile, research if tile paint is an option for your kitchen or bath. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color - a rich or vivid color on a focal wall can add instant style, like on the wall behind the tub or stove. Don’t forget the fifth wall: a fresh white ceiling instantly brightens the area and visually heightens the room, which can make the space feel

into an upscale alternative. Swap light fixtures and bulbs If your current bathroom and kitchen light fixtures evoke nostalgia from a lost era, it’s time for a swap. Pick out a new overhead fixture to instantly dress up the room - modern chandeliers, track lighting and recessed lighting are popular options. For bathrooms, installing task lighting by the mirror can help streamline daily routines. Keep in mind, cool, bright white bulbs with a high color-rendering index (CRI) closely reflect natural light and therefore are a good option for bathrooms as well as cooking spaces.

larger and more modern. Frame the mirror Every bathroom has a mirror, and some kitchens and adjacent dining spaces feature mirrors as well. A mirror provides a focal point while reflecting light to make it appear brighter. But if you have a builder-grade mirror, you’re probably longing for more style. Instead of investing in a costly new mirror, simply add a new frame around your current one. You can buy a prefabricated frame or create one yourself fairly easily from supplies at your local craft store. Your boring old mirror will be transformed immediately

o long, winter days holed up indoors have you dreaming of a new deck to relax on come springtime? Whether you envision transforming a deck into a personal sanctuary or building a new outdoor living space for backyard entertaining, now is the perfect time to start turning those dreams into reality. Get a jump-start by preparing to enjoy warmer weather with these five easy steps that will take your deck from functional to fantastic, before spring. 1. Add lasting style underfoot by selecting the right decking product.

A deck only looks as good as its boards, which is why it is important to select decking that is as durable as it is attractive. Even well-designed outdoor living spaces can disappoint if deck boards crack, fail, fade or warp. Many deck products are available, but composite decking is one material that has quickly grown in popularity, and market research firm the Freedonia Group predicts the material will see continued growth in the coming years. Composite decking products, like ChoiceDek, fuel this growth by helping homeowners realize that decks can require minimal upkeep while still

furniture, you can clearly define areas for eating, socializing and relaxing. If you have multiple outdoor living spaces you can also incorporate pathway features and ground lighting to connect the spaces and help your guests travel smoothly from one area to the other. Don’t let difficult terrains or space limit you. By using platform decks to tame hardto-navigate slopes and including raised portions in smaller designs, you will be able to expand your usable space and extend your views of the scenery. 3. Create drama on deck. Once you’ve got a basic idea of how you want to design your deck, get creative and pinpoint areas where you could make use of artistic focal points that will make your deck even more unique.

Some of the simplest ways to add distinction to your deck are to alternate the plank directions, create in-laid patterns and inset frames. With moisture-resistant deck boards you can accent nature in your design by simply encircling a tree near the deck or highlighting a water feature. Similar levels of creativity can also be applied to fire pits, planters, built-in seating and storage boxes. 4. Stay ahead of the curve. If those simple design tricks aren’t enough to set your outdoor living space apart, consider incorporating curves into your deck design. Circles, sweeping arcs and other unique shapes that are juxtaposed against straight lines can add a distinctive touch of customization that will showcase your creativity. Contemporary materials like composite

decking make shaping deck boards into these eye-catching curves a breeze. Contractors and do-it-yourselfers following manufacturer instructions can rip, route and bend the boards into a range of one-of-akind custom shapes. 5. Give guests something attractive to lean on. While railings are an important safety feature, they can also double as a decorative accent that takes your deck to a whole new level. You can finish out your deck with color-matched composite railing components and accessories for a seamless look, or contrast colors to create visual interest. If preserving views is important, consider using tempered glass panels, horizontal cables or shaped metal instead of traditional balusters.

providing lasting beauty. “Homeowners are looking for outdoor living spaces that will allow them to relax and enjoy their backyards,” says Scott Spencer, ChoiceDek national account manager. “They don’t want to worry about the chore of cleaning or maintaining their outdoor products regularly. Composite decking brings the beauty of real wood to a deck with less maintenance and lasting durability.” 2. Design your outdoors as an extended living space. Once you have the perfect materials in mind, consider that your outdoor living space serves as an extension of the home. Your deck, patio or porch doesn’t have to be boxy in design. By incorporating level changes, handrails, lighting and the right

carry several diseases and their urine and feces can trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children. Norway rats, much like roof rats, are nocturnal and social, burrowing closely to one another. Norway rats are credited with the ability to gnaw through plastic and lead piping to find food and water. These rats are also known to chew through electrical wires, putting homes at risk for fires. The NPMA offers these tips to help homeowners keep rodents rummaging out in nature - not in the kitchen pantry: 1. Investigate your home from the outside. Upgrading Your Bathroom

C

reating an outstanding bathroom experience can be as easy as updating fixtures, freshening paint and adding some luxury touches. In fact, almost half of Americans (49 percent) who choose to remodel their bathrooms, do so in order to upgrade features and fixtures, according to a recent survey by Houzz. Focus your efforts on these key areas, and you can easily accomplish the uplifting resolution to improve your home this year. Superior showering: Multiple surveys have shown that Americans view the shower as more than just a place to get clean. It’s also where many go to de-stress and escape daily pressures. A shower can be soothing or stimulating, so you need a showerhead that’s

equally adept at creating both effects. And, since the Environmental Protection Agency says that nearly 17 percent of the water we use in our homes goes for showering, it’s important to choose a showerhead that conserves water without sacrificing the quality of your showering experience. Handshowers like the Aero Handshower Classic Series by TOTO combine the ecofriendly qualities of a low-flow showerhead with the convenience and luxury of a handshower. AeroJet+ technology dramatically increases the water’s volume while decreasing consumption. Plus, the handshower allows you to aim the jet where it’s needed most for cleanliness or to soothe sore muscles. Finer fixtures: With the commode serving

only influence the room’s visual appeal, but its usability and environmental impact as well. Washing your hands can use about a gallon of water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Imagine how much more water gets wasted if your old faucet is leaky or difficult to maneuver. Replacing older, outdated faucets can help change the look and feel of a bathroom, allow you to use less water and even satisfy the varying dexterity levels of different members of the household. Single-handed options marry sturdy, practical design with sleek looks and ease of use. Forged brass construction valves with ceramic disk cartridges ensure longevity and improved temperature and flow control. The single-handle design makes the faucet easy to use for children and for seniors who might have dexterity limitations.

as both a practical item and a design element, upgrading the toilet is an easy, cost-effective addition to your bathroom remodeling plans. Replace an older, dated and less efficient toilet with a modern low-flow option that conserves water without sacrificing flushing power. To elevate your new commode to a luxury experience, consider adding a personal cleansing unit. The Washlet B100 personal cleansing system installs on the toilet like any toilet seat and fits most elongated-bowl styles. An easy-to-read control panel allows users to set the temperature and pressure of the aerated water, and adjust the self-cleaning wand with dual-action spray. Additionally, a soft-seat closing feature ensures you’ll never again hear a toilet lid slam. Fulfilling faucets: Faucets are another key design element of any bathroom, and they not

hen spring arrives will your deck be ready for “primetime?” Or will it still be wearing the shabby remnants of last season’s look? Clunky, view-blocking railings, a rectangular layout and dark stain are so last decade. Before warm weather gets here, consider upgrading your outdoor living space with the trends that every well-dressed deck will be wearing this year. Cable railing = better views Whether you’re lucky enough to live on the water or you spend a lot of time keeping your backyard green and blooming, wouldn’t it be great to be able to enjoy the view from your deck? Traditional wooden railings can block your view, and glass can be hard to clean. More view-seeking homeowners are replacing wooden balusters with Ultratec stainless steel cable railings. Do-ityourself kits from manufacturers like The Cable Connection make it easy to replace old balusters with stainless steel cable, creating a sleek, upscale and viewfriendly look. The cable can be used with wood, metal or sleeved posts with a solid core, and you can retrofit any railing with the cable. Whether your deck is made of wood or composite, cable railing works wherever you would install a traditional railing, including the deck perimeter and stairs. Visit www.thecableconnection.com

to learn more. A deck of a different color Clear sealant for a natural look or subdued rustic hues have long been the colors of choice for decks. This year, expect to see a plethora of fresh colors popping up on decks. While changing the color of a wooden deck from a darker hue to something brighter may be problematic, composite decking manufacturers have branched out into a variety of brighter colors, including whites and light grays. You’ll even see pops of color like greens and blues in designs and inserts set into decking planks. You can also add color to your deck through plantings. Think outside the planter box - and traditional floral plantings - to mix things up with decorative grasses and leafy foliage that will splash color around your deck throughout the summer. Mixed media ups interest Wooden planks, wooden railings, stairs and even furniture - long gone are the days when decks were single-material constructions. Today’s decks are a study in mixed media, incorporating traditional materials like wood, brick and tile with modern elements such as composite planks, cable railings and even ceramic tile. The amalgam of materials can yield a multitude of patterns, styles and looks. Pair a traditional wood deck with cable

A Lush Lawn in 4 Easy Steps

ant to get the best out of your lawn this year? Implement these simple hacks to keep your lawn green and growing, your equipment up and running, and your yard looking great: Feed your lawn. In order to maintain a healthy lawn, you should fertilize twice a year. Start the process one month after the lawn starts growing in the spring, and one month before the lawn goes dormant in the fall. Spring fertilization is imperative, as it replenishes nutrient reserves that have been used up during the first growth spurt of the season. Avoid “burning” the lawn by only fertilizing at the recommended rate and ratio for your lawn. Check with the experts at your local lawn care supply store to choose the correct dose. Perform mower checkups. A properly running mower is essential to keeping your lawn looking great. Make sure it’s ready for every mow by incorporating these maintenance tips into your routine:

Change your mower oil. This should be done every 25 hours of use for a walk-behind mower, which is once a year for most users. For a lawn tractor, change the oil every 50 hours. Keep your mower clean. Brush away grass clippings from the cooling fans and keep air intake screens clear so air can pass through. Make sure that all safety shields are in place to protect you and your family. Sharpen your blade. A dull blade will split grass blades, leaving them susceptible to disease. Sharpen the blade to about one sixty-fourth of an inch for a clean cut. Also, be sure the blade is balanced to ensure an even cut. Mulch instead of bag. Mulching while you mow leaves a thin layer

tractor by adding implements to help complete yard tasks more quickly, and enjoy some rest and relaxation on the weekend. Use utility carts for hauling, spreaders for applying fertilizer, aerators to renew the soil, or even a snowblower attachment to remove the snow from your driveway. From mulching to mowing to feeding, keeping your lawn green and growing requires a little strategic care, but the reward is as sweet as the smell of fresh cut grass. (Family Features)

of grass clippings on the lawn. These clippings gradually break down to provide additional nitrogen to the lawn. This provides a natural fertilizer throughout the mowing season. Look for mowers with specifically designed mulching mower decks and blades that cut clippings into tiny pieces, returning them to the turf. A riding mower allows you to choose if you want to mulch, side-discharge or bag clippings without the need for additional tools. Do more with your mower. You can now do more than ever with your

A

seasonal guide to maintaining your home Homeowners can avoid emergency repairs by completing a few home projects each season. A simple project such as inspecting the plumbing annually can prevent the unexpected cost of repairing water damage from a pipe that burst. “Repairing water damage can cost 22 times the amount of annually cleaning the gutters, which can prevent water damage to the home’s foundation,” said Chris Terrill, CEO of HomeAdvisor. “The average cost of cleaning the gutters is $212 according to HomeAdvisor’s Cost Guide.” From spring to winter, Terrill offers these maintenance tips to help homeowners save money and time in the long run: Spring Plumbing. Every spring inspect all plumbing for leaks. Small problems, like leaky faucets and clogged drains can turn into big headaches if left unchecked. The average national cost of hiring a plumber to repair pipes is $411; however, repairing water damage can cost seven times that amount. Roof. Checking for damage and making general repairs in the springtime can extend the lifespan of

a roof. Neglecting to make these minor fixes can lead to long-term damage. The average cost of replacing and installing a new roof is $7,744. Summer Trees and shrubs. The average cost of trimming trees and shrubs is $577, but leaving them untrimmed can lead to roof damage. The average cost of repairing a roof is $1,100. Paint. In the summer, touching up the home’s exterior paint not only boosts its curb appeal, but it also acts as a home’s primary defense against weather, insects and other damage. If a homeowner neglects to complete this task, completely repainting the home’s exterior costs an average of $3,180. Fall Gutter and downspouts. During the fall, clean the gutter and downspouts. According to HomeAdvisor’s Cost Guide, the average cost of cleaning the gutter and downspout is $212. Ignoring this matter can affect the foundation of

ave you ever admired a coffee table cleverly fabricated using a discarded door sitting on a frame? Or been surprised by the sight of an old refrigerator reborn as a bookshelf or TV cabinet? A growing number of homeowners are taking utilitarian home elements and transforming them with creative flair into stunning home designs. Even the venerable garage door is experiencing new life as interior room dividers, exterior walls and other purposes yet to be discovered. “Many homeowners are opening their homes to the great outdoors by using garage doors instead of sliding glass doors,” says Vickie Lents, director of marketing for Entrematic, a leading company in the garage door industry known for smart innovation and design.”It’s a particularly popular trend in coastal and mountain areas where the outdoor views are naturally incredible, allowing homeowners to enjoy the view from indoors as well as outdoors.” In addition to providing great views of the outdoors, using garage doors as exterior walls also provides the added

benefit of offering a cross-breeze through the home in temperate climates. For many months of the year, a garage door that opens to the exterior can save on cooling costs. After all, when you think about it, a garage door that opens to the exterior serves as an enormous window. Garage doors with clear glass held in place by an aluminum grid system are the common standard in residential applications. Homeowners gravitate to glass garage doors when used as exterior and interior walls because of their clean, modern look. For interior use of garage doors, many architects and homeowners prefer using garage doors without electronic motors, which can be unsightly when suspended from the door’s track system. Now, they can choose a track-less, spring-less and rail-less garage door system with an integrated opener for a state-of-the-art

traditional operating system, garage doors can serve as more than windows to divide indoor living space from the outside. Interior designers and homeowners have gravitated toward the trend of using garage doors to divide room space as well. Particularly when used as interior room dividers, garage doors with frosted or tinted glass offer privacy when closed but can be opened to create expansive indoor space. “Garage doors make such a statement when incorporated into home designs. There’s instant intrigue and excitement when guests see them,” Lents says. “The doors are practical in function and offer the ‘wow factor’ that homeowners want.”
