President’s Day Positivity

received a phone call from a nice lady this past week who enjoyed reading my column. She asked if possible could I stay positive about President Obama. Maybe talk about the good things he is doing. My reply was I would do my best. I always listen and try to provide Webb Weekly readers the answers to questions they ask and to write about topics they are concerned about. So here we go. I will begin with complimenting Mr. Obama on his golf game. For a man of such high standing, with a young family to find the time to play the number of rounds of golf really shows me something. He must be a master planner and budgeter of time. Most give up golf or play less when their job or family becomes priority. The President has it figured out and must use all 24 hours of the day. Also, I tip my cap to President Obama, I heard he played a round with Tiger Woods at Augusta and finished two up. Tiger paid for his round, his dinner and paid up on the bet they made. President Obama’s golf game is saving us, the American taxpayers, money thanks to Tiger. Next thing I admire about Mr. Obama is his ability to network. He knows more folks that have the ability to serve our Nation than anybody in Presidential history. This is evident by his ability to fill vacant cabinet positions as they occur. Most would be concerned about continuity, planning and National Security. You

know the positions of Secretary of State, Treasury, Defense, Attorney General and so on are pretty important stuff. No worries for President Obama though, just get on the phone, go play a round of golf with a potential candidate and position filled. I have a Webb Weekly exclusive! Tiger Woods will be our next Secretary of Defense. After a round of golf Mr. Obama felt Tiger’s ability to play out of the sand and rough made him a no-brainer for this position. He also stated anyone with the name Tiger may intimidate our enemies. This leads me to my next good job Mr. President. The money he is saving the American people on military expenses by closing bases, cutting budgets for weaponry, and paring back our troops. Most presidents would be afraid of such bold acts with all that is going on in the world. Not President Obama, he knows the importance of a balanced budget and decreasing of our national debt and he is right on it. President Obama believes by keeping our borders open and not making it more difficult to gain entrance into our Country coupled with the savings of military funding by not engaging our enemies wherever they are is the future of our National Defense. No boots on the ground or full-scale military operation abroad. This keeps our troops here at home to defend our homeland. Let our enemies incur the travel and logistics expense. Pure

the

military expertise by our President. I am envious of the President and his vacation planning. Anywhere his family would like to go is no problem. Of course there is that annual two weeks in Hawaii. That’s Jim probably getting old Webb, Jr. for the Obamas. I have no problem with his time away from the Oval Office, whether it be for golf or vacation. This saves us money on all the ink he uses to bypass Congress by signing Executive Orders. It’s a win, win. He also has his down time with his family paid for by someone else. Boy, I need to learn to play the angles more. I always think it’s cool he has an aircraft carrier floating nearby when he travels to Africa or Greece. Talk about making a statement. I’m the President of the United States. I bring my own Cruise ship along, complete with military aircraft, sea to land missiles and a fully stocked bar with Sam Adams. That’s impressive. The next time my family and I go to Ocean City, I think I will call the President. See if he will send the USS Enterprise down off the coast of South Jersey for me. Hey, I pay my taxes, it can’t hurt to ask. Party of four for Webb, your aircraft carrier is ready complements of President Obama. That’s rolling with the big dogs.

I could go on and on about my admiration of President Obama. I’m glad that nice lady had concerns over my lack of appreciation for our Commander-in-Chief. I admire his ability to create a verbalbuster during State of the Union addresses or press conferences. Again pure brilliance on his part. What’s a verbalbuster? When an individual talks with conviction and passion and continues his message for a length of time, covering an array of topics to the point where no one really knows what he’s been saying. Everyone claps, looks at each other puzzled, and asks what did he say? Then realize they just are glad it’s over and they don’t know. And last but definitely not the least is my appreciation of Obama Care. His salesmanship and hiring of PR folks to pedal the Affordable Health Care Act. His ability to get it through Congress and implemented. Pure genius. Nobody still knows what’s in it. I expect the Indians to take back Manhattan any day soon as part of Obama Care. You know, as compensation for all of the Indian doctors we currently have. What’s that, wrong Indians? No, Mr. Obama clearly said I could keep my doctor and he is an Indian American. Sorry, I’m still confused about Obama Care but our President says it’s in the best interest of the American people. I hope you enjoyed my President’s Day tribute to our President. Boy, I feel good not going negative and stressing the positive. God Bless America.

efusing to make any further comment other than to straighten out a few details, J.E. Nancarrow, principal of the Williamsport High School, classed the suspension of five pupils, boys and girls, during last week for smoking on school property and en route to and from school as one of the “personal things which happen right along” at the school. He went on to say that three boys and girls had been suspended and sent home last week and the other two required to remain in a room at the school until their parents came for them. Girls not yet 15 years of age were included in the group, – discipline was handed out to them in an effort to break up the latest violations of the state school code. The code forbids smoking of all minors while under the jurisdiction of teachers. The jurisdiction extends from the time a pupil leaves home until they have returned to it. The code also prohibits the sale of cigarettes to persons under 21 years of age and provides for criminal prosecution Eating establishments in the vicinity of the school are cooperating, Mr. Nancarrow said. However the vending machines have no clerk purchaser check and allows no discrimination as to who is buying. He also said many merchants on the traveled streets to and from school are not cooperating in preventing students from securing cigarettes. “Unfortunately, my investigation of some of the cases satisfies me that a number of the pupils have parents who smoke, who are smoking in their presence and actually smoking with them in the home,” Nancarrow said.

The Tale Of Cupid

he approach of Valentine’s Day brings many images to mind—red and pink balloons, lacy cards, candy hearts, boxed chocolates, fuzzy teddy bears, long-stemmed roses, diamond pendants and candlelit dinners. No Valentine’s Day would be complete, however, without mention of the god Cupid. Legend has it that anyone struck by one of the god’s arrows would fall madly in love with another. Cupid, of course, is a mythological figure. In Greek mythology, he goes by the name of Cupid and is the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. In Roman mythology, he goes by the name of Eros and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Aphrodite, or Venus if you prefer, is a stunningly beautiful, wildly passionate, possessive goddess who guards her relationship with her children carefully. As the story goes, all is well with Cupid and his mother until he falls in love with a beautiful maiden named Psyche. Psyche rivals Aphrodite in beauty. People are naturally drawn

to her and begin worshipping her more than they do Aphrodite. This infuriates the goddess, and she orders her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster of her choosing. Cupid agrees, but as he is about to pierce the maiden with his arrow, she awakens and startles him, causing him to prick himself instead. Cupid flies off, madly in love with Psyche. Upon learning what has happened, Aphrodite curses Psyche to live the rest of her days alone. Now in love with the maiden, Cupid is angered by his mother’s actions and retaliates by vowing not to shoot any more arrows. Love stops, the renewal of life ends, and Aphrodite’s temple is deserted. Aphrodite becomes concerned and strikes a deal with Cupid. She will permit him to marry Psyche if he resumes his work. Cupid agrees. Meanwhile back on earth, Psyche’s parents become worried when no suitors come calling. They consult an oracle, find out what Aphrodite has done and attempt to appease the goddess with the sacrifice of

no avail. She pleads for the goddesses to help her, but they all send her to Aphrodite. Reluctantly, she goes to the goddess’ temple and asks for her help. Aphrodite agrees to help, but first Psyche must complete a series of tasks, each one harder than the last. Psyche succeeds with assistance from others and is given one final task, to take a box to Hades and capture some of Persephone’s beauty. Before she leaves on her quest, Aphrodite warns Psyche not to open the box. Psyche completes the task, but once again, curiosity gets the best of her and she opens the box. What she finds inside is not beauty but eternal slumber, which overcomes her. No longer angry, Cupid comes to the aid of Psyche again. This time, however, he consults the gods for help. They revive Psyche and make her a goddess. She reconciles with Aphrodite and gives birth to a daughter named Pleasure. There are many variations to this story, of course. All, however, tell a story of love. How befitting for a god who brings people together to fall in love himself.

their young daughter. Cupid rescues Psyche and asks her to marry him— on one condition—that she not see him until the time is right. Psyche agrees to Cupid’s stipulation and only has contact with him at night in total darkness. Psyche enjoys living in the lap of luxury in Cupid’s castle but soon grows homesick. Cupid arranges for her sisters to visit. Upon seeing how well Psyche is living, the sisters become jealous and convince Psyche that her husband must be some sort of monster, just waiting to fatten her up before he kills her and her unborn child. They encourage Psyche to kill her husband before he kills her. Psyche doesn’t want to believe her sisters, but one night, curiosity gets the best of her and she lights a candle. Psyche is stunned at what she sees. Instead of a horrific monster, she finds an exquisite god. Psyche falls madly in love with Cupid and begins to kiss him when a bit of the candle wax drips onto the god’s shoulder. Cupid awakes with a start, sees what has happened and leaves in anger. Psyche searches for Cupid for days to

which uses leading edge technology, has been successful and allowed patients to return to work, recreational sports, competitive activities and everyday life without pain. Results vary depending on the nature and severity of the condition as well as complicating and aggravating factors. An examination is necessary to determine if this therapy is likely to be beneficial in your case. Patients treated with Laser Therapy often show a higher level of function, both during and after the treatment period. This therapy provides a conservative and low cost alternative to those facing surgery as well as those who are not yet surgical candidates, but are bothered by the side effects of drug management or where drug management is ineffective.

Here’s What Patients Say...

I have just finished my treatments and have no pain in my knees. I thank the Doctor and therapists for their compassionate treatment while I was there. They are awesome. ~ Jane M., Jersey Shore, PA When I first came here it took me about 5 min. to get up out of a chair and be able to walk. Now I can get up from a chair and walk with ease. Thank you so so much Twin Hills!!! ~Rita A., Montgomery, PA Started with laser treatments on left knee. Today, a month later, almost all knee pain was gone. I work on concrete for 8 to 10 hours a day with very little pain. Treatments work well and I’m looking forward to completion of process and pain free future. ~George S. Trout Run, PA

Living with knee pain can feel like a crippling experience. Let’s face it, your knees aren’t as young as you used to be, and playing with the kids or grandkids isn’t any easier either. Maybe your knee pain keeps you from walking short distances or playing golf like you used to. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your knee hurts and the pain just won’t go away! We are the Doctors at Twin Hills Chiropractic Health Center. Since we began practicing nearly twenty-two years ago, we’ve seen hundreds of people with knee problems leave the office pain free. If you’re suffering from these conditions, a new breakthrough in medical technology may completely eliminate your pain and help restore normal function to your knees.

Newly Dating to Married for Years: Top Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day For any Relationship Stage

W

hether you’re smitten after dating for only a month or your relationship has a soothing rhythm after many years of marriage, your affections deserve to be celebrated this Valentine’s Day. Finding the perfect way to say you care, however, is often easier said than done. Stop stressing and consider these top trends and unique gift ideas, all custom-fitted to the length of your relationship. The smitten kitten You’re infatuated with your new relationship and every time you go on a date, you get butterflies in your stomach. You just started dating a few weeks or months ago, but you want to make sure the day is extra special. Classic Valentine’s Day gestures are time-tested ways to show you care. Complete the gesture by wrapping up a classic rom-com movie and plan an evening in to view it together. Give the

Over-the-moon in love Lazy afternoons together, inside jokes and nicknames - you’re head over heels in love. This might be the person who you want to spend the rest of your life with, so you want to do something unique on Valentine’s Day. Show your love how sweet you think he or she is with some decadent treats and a fun scavenger hunt. Plan it out at your house or another special location, writing hints for each step along the way on heart-shaped paper. This is a fun activity for both men and women. You can opt to have one big sweet gift at the end or hide small treats along the way with each clue. Honeymooners You’re recently married and still in the honeymoon phase. Planning your life together is an exciting journey and your one-of-a-kind love should be honored on Valentine’s Day. When shopping, look for gifts that can

The endless flame You’ve been with your partner for many years, but just because you’ve hit your stride doesn’t mean you’re any less

infatuated with him or her than when you first fell in love. Keep your flame burning bright by planning an extra-special night at home for just the two of you. Get some snacks that pair well with your favorite bottle of wine and prepare for an intimate evening. Then, spend a few hours doing something that reminds you of why you are together. You might watch your wedding video or maybe the first movie you ever saw together when you were dating. Go through old photos and have fun reminiscing. These reminders of special moments demonstrate why your love is endless and are sure to make for a very special Valentine’s Day.

his is a simple butterfly paper craft that uses a lollipop as the head and body. You can use cardstock or a heavier paper to make the petals (just trace the template) but, in my opinion, construction paper works best for children. I find cardstock is too difficult for young kids to cut out and scrapbooking paper is expensive.

Romantic Rendezvous or Girls’ Night Out, Find the Perfect Look for Valentine’s Day

W

hether you’ll be dining out with a new love, sharing a romantic dinner at home, or enjoying a night out with your besties, you’ll want to look great on Valentine’s Day. Creating just the right look doesn’t have to be overwhelming; a few simple tips, tricks, tools and techniques can help you wow your Valentine’s Day companion. Your makeup will be the crowning touch to any outfit you choose. Start with the right tools, like the Lovely Looks set from EcoTools, a leader in eco-conscious beauty products that is best-known for its incredibly soft cosmetic brushes. The set features everything you need to create a complete look, including a foundation brush designed with pointed-tip bristles for precise coverage, a shadow brush for even, accurate application of color to the eyes, a flat eyeliner brush to define your eyes using your favorite liner, an angled blush brush to sweep color over cheeks, and a powder brush to set makeup for a long-lasting hold. Follow this step-by-step guide to create three great Valentine’s Day looks. Romantic

This Valentine’s Day, try cooking up a romantic dinner for two at home. Enjoy a nice meal and a bottle of bubbly without having to step out the door. For a night like this, think voluminous hair, flawless skin, flirty lashes and an irresistible glow. Begin by creating a flawless base. Use your foundation brush to apply a BB cream or foundation over your entire face. Set using a powder brush to dust a light or translucent powder over your face. For eyes, use soft colors in browns or beige to keep eyes looking natural. Using the shadow brush, apply a light taupe to your lids, and define the crease with a darker brown shade using the same brush. Using the flat eyeliner brush, line lids with a soft black or dark brown hue, then use the brush to gently smudge the outer half to create a subtle, cat-eye effect. Add a rosy pink blush to the apples of your cheeks using the angled blush brush for an alluring, feminine flush. Red is the color of romance, and when it comes to lips, it’s always a safe bet if you are looking to turn things up a notch. Line your lips with a dark cherry red and then fill in the entire lip with liner to ensure the color lasts. Layer a matching red lipstick over the liner to deepen the color. Finally,

Playful Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about romance. Girls just want to have fun and look good while doing it, and Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate friendships by going out with your girlfriends. Try experimenting with color for a playful, upbeat look. Begin with a good foundation applied with the foundation brush; then set it with the powder brush to prevent shine. The angled blush brush does double duty to define cheeks with a bronzer and blush combination. Create sky-high cheekbones by adding a shimmery highlighting hue to the tops of cheeks. Make your facial features pop by filling in brows using the flat eyeliner brush. Using the shadow brush, cover your lids with a wash of shimmery bronze; then line lower lashes with a bright blue or green liner. Finish the look by adding two coats of mascara to create lush lashes, and add a simple wash of coral to make lips look inviting and kissable.

I want to be recognized for how great I am.

Growing up with a disability was hard on Jordan. The stress and frustration of everyday tasks frequently got him into trouble. After high school, he wasn’t ready for the work force, so he enrolled in Hope’s FoCES (Focus on Community Employment Success) program. Daily classes allow him to develop independent living skills and manage stress. Now he’s more confident than ever. He can count money, make purchases and tell time. And with improved literacy, he’s started quite the collection of chapter books.

Sultry Ensure your date can’t take his eyes off of you by creating a sexy, smoky eye that’s sophisticated and smoldering. The effect works with any color palette, so choose one that complements your wardrobe, your natural coloring and your sense of style. You can stick with traditional grays and blacks, play safe with neutrals or get daring with color, as long as you have three shades to work with. Prep the eyelid with primer to ensure color stays in place; then sweep your most neutral or lightest hue over the entire lid using the shadow brush. Use the tip of the same brush to contour the crease of your eyes with a color that’s a few shades darker than the lid color. With the flat eyeliner brush, apply the darkest shade around the outer edges of the eye and under the lower lash line to create a doeeyed look. Blend all pigments together using the medium shade so that they fade into each other seamlessly. With the lightest shade, highlight your brow bone and inner corners of the eye to help open them up. Use your flat eyeliner brush and a black powder or gel liner to line both the upper and lower third of your lash line. Complete your sultry eyes with several coats of mascara to both top and bottom lashes for extra drama.

YEARSMILING! -- NEW YOU!! CAN’TNEW STOP

Next, create the perfect backdrop for your stunning eyes with a full coverage foundation. Use the foundation brush to evenly apply and then set with a translucent power using the powder brush. Add bronzer just under your cheekbones with the angled blush brush, then add blush just above the bronzer and highlighter just above that to create a sculpted look. Finish off with a neutral lip to not distract from your amazing eyes.

Snow, ice, slush. Snow, ice, slush. Repeat. That’s the recipe for winter 2015, a recipe so redundant and annoying, a wet paper bag filled with cold oatmeal seems more exciting. Unless you’re a penguin, Eskimo or have a one way ticket to Florida, keep the rock salt, snow shovel and bird seed handy. Winter is an ideal time to welcome some new feathered friends to your backyard this snowy winter. But, what should I feed them? What should I not feed them? Are there birds to avoid feeding? David Brown, a member of the Lycoming Audubon Society board of directors has the answers for creating a bird buffet in your backyard. * Have the birds one would find in their backyard become so accustom to living off bird feeders it’s now part of their feeding habits? It is a myth that birds become dependent on bird feeders. They augment their diets with bird seed, but a larger portion of their diet comes from natural sources. All of the species that visit bird feeders can also be

found away from feeders. * Are there birds not to feed or encourage? European Starlings and House Sparrows are often disliked because they are invasive non-native species. This is mostly personal taste and feeding them is not a problem. Different types of feeders and seed can be used to a certain extent to control the bird species you attract. * What type of general feed is best? Black oil sunflower seed is a popular choice that is especially liked by smaller species. Striped sunflower seed is liked by larger species like Northern Cardinals, but harder for smaller species to crack open. Niger seed is very small and popular for finches. Many seed mixes are sold with different types of seeds to attract specific species. You get what you pay for and cheaper mixes often contain filler seeds that the birds will simply dump to the ground as they try to find their preferred seed. Suet is a popular choice that is loved by woodpeckers and nuthatches and can be purchased in squares that fit into suet cages that can be hung or attached to trees. * What shouldn’t be given to birds? Birds, including the ducks at your local pond, should not be fed bread because it is filling but does not provide any nutritional value. Also avoid feeding birds chocolate and table scraps.

570-327-1598 • 1-877-327-1598 CERTIFIED SENIOR ADVISORS

* Is there a better type feeder? Different types of feeders will be used by different species. Platform feeders will attract ground-eaters such as Mourning Doves and White-throated Sparrows. Suet feeders will attract woodpeckers, nuthatches and possibly Brown Creepers. Tube feeders with small perches will keep larger species from using them. Large hopper feeders will accommodate a large variety of birds. Some feeders are more squirrel-resistant than others, but none may be truly squirrel-proof. * What are some common birds found in our area during winter? My feeders in a suburban area attract large numbers of House Finch, House Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, American Goldfinch and European Starling and smaller numbers of Northern Cardinal, American Tree Sparrow, White-breasted Nuthatch, Tufted Titmouse, Black-capped Chickadee, Blue Jay, Downy Woodpecker and Mourning Dove. Feeders near other habitats may attract a different mix of species. * Has the change in weather caused a changed a bird’s natural habits? Birds go where their food is. Changes in climate affect a species’ range, but there is also much year-to-year variation. If a lot of natural food is available one winter, birds may not utilize feeders as much. Many finch species such as Common Redpoll and Pine Siskin can appear in Pennsylvania in large winter irruptions when food supplies are limited in their more northerly wintering

range. This has been a great winter for finding Pine Siskins. In cold periods of winter and on days of snow storms, feeder activity may increase. * What are the benefits, both bird and homeowner, for feeding birds? Feeding birds in the winter gives the birds an easy meal when natural sources may be harder to find and gives homeowners a simple way of staying connected to nature and local wildlife. Projects such as the Great Backyard Bird Count, Project Feederwatch and eBird allow users to submit their observations for scientists to use. * How can someone find out more about the Lycoming Audubon Society? Lycoming Audubon Society’s website is www.lycomingaudubon.blogspot.com. We also have a very active Facebook group that anyone can join to get constant updates on what birds others are seeing and event information. We have monthly meetings in Williamsport with programs on birdrelated topics that are free and open to the public. * Anything else? You can find great birds in your yard any time of year. Keep a pair of binoculars and a field guide near a window and once you master those birds, head to a local park, river or forest and see what you can find there. Pennsylvania has a thriving birding community that is always welcoming to new bird-watchers, so don’t be afraid to get involved.

hether you’re a hopeless romantic or you don’t believe in Cupid at all, everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day in their own special way. From a fancy date or a girls’ night in, to a festive class party with the kids, there are activities, and treats, to suit every type of Valentine’s personality out there. Which one are you? The hopeless romantic Do you wear your heart on your sleeve? Do you look forward to Valentine’s Day every year as a time to celebrate the people you love? Then you are a hopeless romantic and you embrace everything that Valentine’s Day stands for. For you, the day should be filled with thoughtful gestures that come from the heart. Start by sending messages to the special people in your life. For a significant other, you might text famous romantic quotes throughout the day to show your love. Then, skip the expensive flowers and get crafty by making Sweetheart Roses with Hershey’s Kisses chocolates, which come in special pink and red foils for the holiday. Simply wrap two Kisses chocolates in cellophane or plastic wrap to create a rosebud shape and then attach your creation to florist wire and wrap it in green florist tape. Add a little note saying how much you care for a finishing

touch. This gift is a sweet treat and you won’t have to worry about it wilting. Does your sweetheart have a sweet tooth? New Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate Truffle treats are the perfect gift for chocolate lovers. The last-minute cupid If you are the person who waits until the commute home to swing by the store for your sweetie’s gift, you are a last-minute cupid. You like Valentine’s Day, but you are not known to plan ahead. Fortunately, there’s no need to worry with a few quick and impressive ideas for special gifts. To start, a handwritten card is always appreciated. Simply say what’s in your heart - you don’t have to be Shakespeare. When the words are your own, your loved one will know you genuinely care. Next, attach a gift that signifies all the sweet things in life like the Hershey’s Kisses Heart Shaped Tin, packed with Kisses Milk Chocolates, which is guaranteed to make her swoon. The class parent In classrooms across the country, Valentine’s Day is a special time to celebrate friendship at school. If you’re the class mom or dad, you know the class will be counting on you to help the kids get ready for this special day and prepare all the cards and goodies.

Help students celebrate their friends by having them make their own cards. Use construction paper, ribbon, glitter and stickers to help your kids make customized cards for classmates. Then, add a sweet treat like Jolly Rancher Dippers that are sure to be a classroom favorite. Parents can also start a new family tradition at home and show their kids how much they care by giving them Valentine’s Day baskets. yrton “Bert” Winder is an extremely unique man. He has found the love of his life … twice. Quite spry for a man 92 years old, Bert has a jovial disposition and a contentment that comes from knowing he has lived a complete life and is grateful to the Lord who made it possible. Bert Winder was a pilot during World War II, and found himself flying in both the European and Asian-Pacific Theaters of war. He met a student nurse from Delaware named Marie and they married in 1944. They settled in Middletown, Delaware, had two children, and for the next 57 years lived a peaceful life. He continued to fly, and was obviously quite good at it, eventually elected to the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame. But in 2002, Marie died from Alzheimer’s disease, and Bert assumed that he would live his remaining days as a widower. But, he was in for the surprise of his life. Before Bert had even met Marie,

he had a girlfriend by the name of Marjorie Barton. Their first date was in October of 1939, and she was excited about his interest in flying. She finally mustered up the courage to go up with him on a airplane ride on a beautiful Sunday morning in December of 1941. December 7th to be exact. As a result of the Pearl Harbor attack by the Japanese, Bert was commissioned a second lieutenant, and Marjorie and Bert found the war directing them in separate ways. Majorie went on to study at Susquehanna University, eventually graduating in 1946. She married a man named Leon Myers from Hughesville the following year. They had four children, but their marriage was not ideal, and they eventually divorced in 1979. Then, in 2003, a group of fourth-grade students at Cochran Elementary School in Williamsport were conducting in a pen-pal project and Marjorie volunteered to participate. Her journal buddy asked her about her memories of World War II and it sparked some long lost memories of an old boyfriend who

maid of honor and Bert’s grandson, Andrew Byrton Cheney, acting as best man — the two old lovebirds exchanged wedding vows. After 60 years of separation, they were together again. And now, after ten years of their marriage, they could not be happier. Bert is in declining health now, but you would never know that from him. His ever-present smile and strong bearing speak of a man who knows he has been truly blessed. A lesson to those today who believe that marriage fidelity is a thing of the past, Bert Winder shows us that true love is … forever.

she knew had been a pilot. So, Marjorie decided to track Bert Winder down. Thank God for the internet! Marjorie found Bert, and perhaps it was nostalgia or maybe a tinge of a long-lost emotion — but Bert decided it would be a good idea to meet again in person. After a year of frequent visits from Delaware to Williamsport, Bert decided to pop the question. On September 18, 2004, an 82-year old Byrton “Bert” Winder proposed marriage to a 79-year old Marjorie Barton. Two months later, on November 27, 2004, with Marjorie’s daughter, Beth Ann Myers, serving as

Valentine Dating 101 By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz

T

here’s a dark cloud hanging low on the horizon that grows larger and more menacing each day. As this Friday approaches, you start to see red, your heart aches, giant bears in shades of pink and red seem to be everywhere and some annoying cherub wearing a diaper keeps shooting arrows at you. His aim stinks and dozens of arrows whiz past your head hitting those nearby. People stare, small children cover their eyes...an old lady weeps while a hushed voice sadly states “She’s single on Valentine’s Day.” Far off in the distance, the diaper wearing, arrow yielding Cupid lets loose a wicked laugh. Welcome to Valentine’s Day for the lonesome and lonely. Being single on this day of love, roses and heart shaped boxes of creamy and rich milk chocolate covered cherries, dusted with red sugar and finished with a drizzle of white chocolate over the entire morsel of sweet goodness. (Can you tell I love chocolate?) Anyway, where was I...of yes, being single on Valentine’s Day is nasty bad.

$679

Dear Lonely, Many single women in the area tell me single men are hard to find. The answer is simple. Single men are out there, the problem is camouflage. Since camo is the fabric of choice when selecting clothing or under garments, the local guys are simply blending into the background. “Is that a shrub or the old guy from Newberry?” To catch one of these singles, think like a hunter and lure them out with meat, especially chicken wings along

Hey Elmer, Most definitely avoid the singles party. Do you want to be with a pack of sad sacks like yourself all night? It would be like staring in a mirror all night. Women swoon over a man with facial stubble and a fishing license pinned to his camo hat...even in February. Skip the bars and mull around the grocery store. Here’s a tip, grocery stores are a magnet for singles. Be on the lookout for solo individuals carrying a basket with one hot dog, one roll and a gallon of Death by Chocolate ice cream. This screams they are single and somewhat “bedokac” a favorite word of mine that translates into “Oh you poor wretched thing.” Another benefit of cruising the grocery store, free samples! If you see your soul mate inhaling handfuls of sausage

sticks, keep moving.

Mother Valentine

T

oday, the production of Valentine’s Day cards in America is a multimillion-dollar business. Americans purchase thousands of cards every February to present to their valentines. In the 1800s, Americans weren’t so lucky. They either had to purchase a card imported from Great Britain or make their own. American Valentine’s Day cards were not a reality until the late 1840s when Esther Howland took on the task of making them. Howland was born in 1828 and resided with her family in Massachusetts. Upon graduation from Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in 1847, she received an exquisite English valentine from one of her father’s

business associates. Howland enjoyed the card so much she decided to make her own. She discussed the idea with her father, who owned a large book and stationery store. He liked the idea and helped Howland order supplies. She made a dozen samples and gave them to her brother for his next sales trip. Howland was hoping he would sell $200 in orders, but much to her surprise and delight, he sold $5,000. There was no way Howland could make that many cards on her own, so she got a group of friends together and developed an assembly line at the Howland family home. She completed the order and advertised her cards in a local paper. With an eye for detail

and a well-crafted product at a reasonable price, Howland was destined to succeed. Prices for her cards ran from a nickel for a simple design to $50 for a layered design. With business thriving, Howland created the New England Valentine Company in 1879. She relocated her company to a larger building and created a small book of verse for her customers to choose from for their cards. To keep up with demand, she employed athome workers. Each week, she would have a card template and a box of supplies delivered to various women around town. The women would make the cards at home and return the finished product to Howland at the end of the week. Howland brought many new innovations to the valentine card industry, including built-

up shadowboxes and the contrast of white lace against brightly colored paper. With imported pictures, die-cut flowers, gilt paper trimmings and fancy scraps on intricate lace paper, her cards were quite popular and sold very well. Historians estimate Howland’s business brought in over $100,000 a year. Howland continued making Valentine’s Day cards until 1881 when her father fell ill. Howland sold the business to George Whitney so she could care for her father. Whitney kept up the business for some time, basing many of his card designs upon the Howland style. Howland died in 1904. A newspaper article soon after referred to her as the “Mother of the American Valentine,” forever cementing her importance to the industry.

omance occurs at all stages of life, even in youth, although it’s usually less serious then and may even be called a crush. It is not uncommon for tweens and teens to develop an infatuation with another. Such crushes are a part of life. The object of affection may be a peer, a young adult or even a celebrity. Celebrities with a large tween-teen following are subject to teen crushes and often referred to as teen idols. Many believe Frank Sinatra to be the first real teen idol. Here are some others. 1950s–1960s • Paul Anka • Frankie Avalon • James Dean • Fabian • Annette Funicello • Davy Jones • Ricky Nelson • Elvis Presley • Bobby Rydell • Neil Sedaka

2000s • Justin Bieber • Miranda Cosgrove • Miley Cyrus • Hilary Duff • Zac Efron • Taylor Lautner • Lindsay Lohan • Demi Lovato • Robert Pattinson • Taylor Swift For every teen idol, there was probably a teen idol group. The Beach Boys, Beatles and Rolling Stones, for example, were a huge hit with teens in the 1950s and 1960s. So were the Monkees, Osmond Brothers and Jackson Five in the 1970s. New Kids on the Block was one of the first boy bands to explode on the scene in the late 1980s. Many other hit bands with teens would follow in the 1990s and 2000s, including the Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Menudo, ’N Sync, the Spice Girls and the Jonas Brothers. Athletes also tend to make a big impression with teens. Nadia Comaneci, Gabby Douglas, Dorothy Hamill, Bruce Jenner, Shawn Johnson, Michelle Kwan, Nastia Liukin, Ryan Lochte, Apolo Ohno, Michael Phelps, Mary Lou Retton and Shaun White are just some of the athletes that at one time or another were probably the object of a teen crush. There have been hundreds of teen idols over the years. You probably have your own favorites. Who was the object of your crush?

The Roving Sportsman Beyond Our Borders By Jon Pries

W

ith winter’s grip tightening on us this week, and several more weeks of snowy and cold weather until spring finally arrives, it’s time to hunker down with a mug of coffee or hot chocolate and do some planning. Bear hunting throughout our state provides some excellent opportunities that seem to grow along with the increase in bear population. Turkeys, although some of the hardest in the country to hunt because of the pressure from all of the many hunters, and in spite of some areas where the numbers of birds has declined somewhat, continue to provide great sport in the spring and fall. As to deer, well, I won’t get into the ongoing debate, but in my observation, quality buck hunting has increased since the introduction of the antler restriction and antlerless deer are still available if you need some excellent meat for the freezer. There are, however, many great hunts available throughout the US and many Pennsylvania hunters have traditionally traveled to the western states in pursuit of other big game. Many times when I have talked to numerous outfitters and guides in the western states, they reflect how the majority of their nonresident hunters are from Pennsylvania. If you haven’t yet ventured beyond our state border to hunt, here are a few suggestions you might consider.

Rocky Mountain elk are probably the most popular game pursued by out of state hunters and Colorado and Wyoming are number one and two in the states where hunters will head this fall. Either state in blessed with a good population of elk, and both have a large amount of National Forest and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) acreage where hunters are welcome to pursue elk. Mule deer season sometimes overlaps the elk season, so check with their fish and game department to see if your travel dates will coincide with a joint season and you may have the added bonus of hunting two species at the same time. Either September or October is a great month to hunt Rocky Mountain elk – the weather is usually comfortable, with frost overnight and pleasant temperatures through the daytime hours. As the season progresses, temperatures will fall, but that means the elk are up and moving more throughout the day. Fall colors of red oak brush, golden aspens and the dark timber of evergreens present a picture that is unequalled here on the east coast. If you can make it to elk country during the rut, you will experience one of the most thrilling aspects of any hunt you may ever go on – that is the bugling of bull elk that reverberates across the mountainside any time of the day or night. If luck is with you, you may even be able to call one of these majestic animals in by imitating a bull or cow elk – it is an experience you will remember the rest of your life! Pronghorn antelope dot the plains throughout the west, and again, Colorado

throughout the state, and once again, hogs can frequently be taken while pursuing these predators. The opportunities are numerous, and the destinations are varied in habitat and scenery. If you would seriously like to learn more, you are in luck! The Great American Outdoor Show will run through Sunday, February 15 at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex. There are numerous quality outfitters who will be there to answer questions, and book hunts, if you are so inclined. If you simply can’t make it there, the Lehigh Valley Sportsman Show at the Allentown Fairgrounds is held from March 6-8, 2015. There will be a few outfitters there, but there will also be many other fellow sportsmen attending that you can talk with.

and Wyoming are top destinations for these elusive animals. Archers prefer to set up at water holes and sometimes use a decoy to help lure an animal into shooting range. If you are a rifle hunter, the tendency will be for longer shots, sometimes in excess of several hundred yards. Use a flat-shooting cartridge and top the rifle with the best optics you can for this long range hunting. Texas. Sometimes, just that one word gets people daydreaming and scheming. There are so many varied opportunities in the Lone Star State - excellent whitetail hunting, hunting for Rio Grande turkeys and a huge overabundance of feral hogs! Many times, you can arrange to double up on species to hunt, usually combining turkeys and hogs or whitetail deer and hogs. Predator hunting, usually for coyotes and bobcats, is available

comments by fly-tying experts on the subtleties of her methods. “No tier of that period was as creative in designing patterns or tied better quality, more lifelike streamers than Mrs. Stevens. This biography has been carefully researched and beautifully written.” – Keith Fulsher, master fly tier and originator of the Thunder Creek series of flies. Carrie G. Steven: Maker of Rangeley Trout and Salmon Flies is a must for anyone interested in tying flies, the history of this charming woman, and/ or the Rangeley region of Maine. Carrie Stevens designed some of the most beautiful flies ever tied, including the famous Gray Ghost. Stevens died in 1970, but her Ghost lives on.

Carrie Stevens- and a wonderful book about her and her life, the sport of angling, and Maine’s Rangeley region. A book I would re-visit upon returning home. Carrie G. Steven: Maker of Rangeley Trout and Salmon Flies, Stackpole Books, 2000, was written by Graydon R. and Leslie K. Hilyard. Hilyard spent 15 years researching the book, which was co-authored with his son Leslie. The book has 85 color photos and 85 blackand-white photos. There are color plates of original patterns, along with neverbefore-published photos and documents from the Stevens’ archives and private collections. All make this book not only an entertaining read but a significant addition to American fly-tying history. Carrie Stevens of Upper Dam, Maine, was born in 1882. She created some of the most beautiful and enduring streamer patterns ever, including the legendary Gray Ghost. She was a fly-fisher and a self-taught fly tier. The book is written in two parts: Carrie Stevens A History, and The Streamers. Chapters include: A Family History, Ghostly Rewards, The Rangeley Lakes, A Circle of Friends, Esthetic Engineering, To the Tier, Stevens Streamers Patterns. Hilyard’s book is well researched and well written. It is a history of Stevens and the region, as well as the definitive guide to Stevens’ streamers and their construction, with

however in that it allows you to sit motionless with your gun at the ready and within shooting distance of the call. With the coyote honing in on the call its attention is diverted elsewhere and not on the shooter. If you plan to give coyote hunting a shot you might also want to check on some of the many organized coyote hunts that take place across the state this time of the year. After all, if you are successful in bagging a coyote you might as well turn the experience into a paycheck as wellthat could make the coyote hunt a lot more pleasurable especially since some coyote hunts pay out several hundred dollars and some can generate several thousand dollars for your effort. I don’t have room to list the many organized hunts available in the state but I recently saw a listing of at least 22 organized hunts in the state. The Mosquito Creek hunt is probably one of the oldest and biggest in the state paying out over $40,000 in prize money last year. Go to www. mosquitocreeksportsmen.com for more information. I suspect you can glean much more by goggling coyote hunts in Pennsylvania.

who hunts coyotes that way it may give you an opportunity to bag one. I have been on some hunts with those who use calls and I must admit that I like this approach. From what I have learned by being out with some avid coyote callers is that camouflage is very important-the better it matches your surroundings the better chance you have of not being detected. Masking your human scent or using the wind to your advantage and not allowing your scent to become a disadvantage are also techniques practiced by successful coyote hunters. From what I’ve been able to gather one of the best approaches is to appeal to a coyote’s appetite; after all food is probably harder to find during the winter months and especially after some heavy snow builds up. The squealing rabbit call seems to be one of the most widely used calls to bring a coyote into shooting range; no need to go out and buy one though since sucking against the palm of your hand does a good job of mimicking a dying rabbit. Natural and non-living bait and electric or mechanical devices are permitted in taking coyotes. Using an electronic call has its advantages

at the end of Game 6 of the1986 World Series in hopes of having him celebrate in the field with his teammates. A ground ball went through Buckner’s legs as the Mets stormed backed to win game 6 and then the World Series the next night. Grady Little’s bullpen decision: Little, another Red Sox manager, decided to stick with his ace, Pedro Martinez, in game 7 of the 2003 American League Championship Series against the Yankees, with the Sox winning 5-2 in the 8th inning. Little visited the mound after Martinez allowed three consecutive hits, but decided to leave Martinez in the game. Jorge Posada then hit a two-run double to tie the game, which the Yankees won in extra innings. Miracle at the Meadowlands: In a 1978 regular season game between the Eagles and the New York Giants, New York had a 17-12 lead with :20 remaining. On the previous play the Giants had taken a knee to run out the clock. Bob Gibson, New York’s offensive coordinator, decided the team should attempt a run. The running back, Larry Csonka, asked not to be given the ball, but he got it anyway, fumbling the handoff. Herm Edwards picked up the ball and ran for a 26-year game-winning touchdown for the Eagles. Monday morning quarterback calls, indeed! But nobody did it with as much at stake, with as many people watching and the ‘dynasty’ word being tossed about. One thing is for sure, Pete Carroll won’t be going to Disney World.

added. Its’ been called the worst coaching decision in the history of the Super Bowl. Few would argue. Perhaps something similar might have been called in a sandlot game, on a high school gridiron or in a pre-season NFL game somewhere along the line. But not in the Super Bowl. To paraphrase the Tom Hanks movie ‘League of Their Own’, at least in Seattle, there IS crying in football. To his credit Carroll took responsibility for the call. So did his offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell. Whoever ultimately made the call, the decision ranks right up there with some of the worst coaching decisions is sports history. To cite a few: Marty Mornhinweg’s overtime call: The stakes may have been far lower, but Morhinweg chose to give his opponent the ball to start overtime in a 2002 Detroit Lions game. The coach felt the wind direction trumped getting the ball, and that his kicker would give him a distinct advantage. But his team never got the chance as the Chicago Bears kicked a field goal to win the game before the Lions touched the ball. John McNamara leaves Bucker on the field: It had become common practice for the Boston Red Sox to take first baseman Bill Bucker out of games in the final innings for a defensive replacement. Bucker had trouble moving around because of various injuries. McNamara reportedly let Bucker stay on the field

I Believe That They Can Win! By Jim Webb Jr.

Paul Petcavage’s Neumann Knights facing Lewisburg and league leading scorer Sam Allen (21.7 PPG). Two great matchups leading to the championship game. Then it’s time for the PIAA District IV playoffs. Three local teams are looking strong for a district crown and hopeful for a run in the State Tournament. A fourth is my wild card pick for District Gold. First in Single A, Coach Petcavage had his Cathletic Knights sitting undefeated at press time. Folks wondered how Newmann would do following up last year’s great season and the loss of all everything player Alize Johnson. Just fine I would say. They are clearly the class of the field in District Single A play. Depending on their draw they could make noise in the State Tournament. SJN has three players carrying the scoring lead. Kevin Anderson 19.4 PPG, Nazsa Short 17.5 PPG and Otis Anderson at 13 PPG. Otis has also done an excellent job running the offense and I do mean running! The Knights get up and down the floor. It’s great to see consistent play and great basketball return to the proud traditions of St. John Neumann. Tip of the cap to Coach Petcavage and his staff. Good luck and keep it rolling! At the Double A level CI and his Lancers seem to be primed for a State Title run. The District Title path got a little easier with Lewisburg moving up to 3A this season. If the Lancers play well they will put up some big numbers during their District Title run.

W

ow, has the high school hoops season flown by. Congrats to Ben Sosa on scoring his 1,000th point! Moose came up big for Loyalsock in their win over Lewisburg this past week, scoring 24 points, including a foul with just seconds remaining to reach the magic number. The foul shot also gave CI’s boys a two point lead and helped secure the HAC II Championship. There has been some great local action to keep the gyms warm on a cold winter’s night. But the best time of scholastic basketball is now upon us. First we have the Heartland Athletic Conference Championship. In a “Hoosier” inspired way the HAC plays their three division winners and a wildcard off for the overall HAC Title. Small school vs. Big school, the hoop is the same height and the rules are the same. May the best team win. This format has produced some great games since its inception. Tip of the cap to the Heartland Basketball Committee. This year we’re looking at Shamokin as the HAC I, big school champ. Loyalsock as the HAC II caught in the middle size champ and St. John Neumann as the HAC III, small school division champ. The wild card is the Lewisburg Green Dragons the HAC II runner up with an overall 20–2 record. The way it appears it will match up is CI’s Lancers vs. Shamokin and Coach

Ben Sosa and Omar Little of Loyalsock and Sam Allen of Lewisburg surpassed the 1,000-point mark this season. They have competed against each other in some outstanding games. The rivalry began while they were in grade school and continued through this season. Ben and Omar are seniors, Sam is a junior. Congrats to all three! into easy offense. Valley. Sock has been balanced on offense all year. Omar Little and Ben Sosa lead the way at about 16 PPG each and both have passed the 1,000-point mark. Mike Pastore scores about 11 per contest and Tommy Baggett and Kyle Datres are right around 10 PPG. With the starting five all scoring around double figures and Kyle Datres being the veteran point guard that makes them go. Only one thing was missing at the beginning of the season, some depth. Marcus Williams, Brennan Casale and Michael LaPoint have solved that problem. If the Lancers play the defense they are capable of, lookout. Tip of the cap to Assistant Coach Jeff Everett and his effort for CI and the troops. District 4’s 3A level has the strongest field. Never count out Head Coach Nick Tagliaferri, who is in his rookie season with Jersey Shore. He has had plenty of playoff success while at Hughesville and he has the Bulldogs currently playing their best ball in about 10 years. Eric Hulling leads a well-balanced, disciplined offensive attack at about 12 PPG. Athletic Brody Smith scores near 11 PPG. Zac Miller chips in over 10 per game. Coach Tag can flat out coach. The improvement of the Bulldog program is ahead of schedule. What a year for “Dawg” sports programs. Lewisburg is the 3A favorite. Coach John Vaji has built a great hoops program. Junior Sam Allen is a Division I college prospect and 1,000 point scorer. He can score inside and out. Matt Fedorjaka can shoot it and contributes almost 13 PPG. Nadir Boone is solid and adds over 11 PPG.
