efore I share my holiday greetings just a reminder this will be our last publication of 2025. The next time I share my thoughts with you will be January 7, 2026.

It’s the day before Christmas, and all through the house, there is so much stirring, I hope the cat gets the mouse.

I’m sure there’s a lot of this going on all over our little neck of Penn’s Woods as the kids are now home from college, family members have traveled home for the holidays, and the hustle and bustle of last-minute gift shopping and meal preparations are in full swing.

Let me be the first to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and most joyous holiday season. Please take the time to come together as family, friends, and loved ones to enjoy this most amazing season. Please find the good in everything and everyone. Check all political conversations at the door until after the New Year. Make sure you give the cook or cooks a great big

hug and say thank you for the amazing meal. Last but not least, if you don’t have something nice to say, keep it to yourself. This applies whether you’re sitting at the family table, are on social media, or your lips are moving in general.

If there are family members, friends, or neighbors that choose to be alone for whatever reason, make sure that holiday spirit in the form of that special plate of leftovers with double dessert and/or a phone call find their way. This is so much needed in our world of today.

Please take the time to share that special Christmas spirit. Whether it be through prayer, the gift of time, or donation with a complete stranger. This can be with someone locally or a person halfway around the world.

Through this infinite love Jim of man, God provides Webb Jr. all of us that shining star of guidance and forgiveness through acceptance.

As we celebrate Christmas as Christians, we must share this love with our fellow man no matter of their beliefs, road traveled, or life chosen.

Within the blueprint provided, it is clearly up to us to provide unconditional love and respect for our fellow man, not mortal judgment. There has never been a time in the chronological history labeled AD that this has been more important. There are forces at work that only want to divide and create hatred.

The best thing we can do to improve our world is to unconditionally love and show respect for our fellow man.

With those thoughts in mind, if you are not a Christian, I ask you to please never be offended by the words “Merry Christmas.” It is my religion’s way to seasonally greet one another in an

I would be honored for the sharing and inclusion into another’s beliefs. If I did not understand the message, I would probably just nod my head and smile out of respect.

Incidentally, just because you love and show respect for your fellow man doesn’t mean you agree with all or any of their beliefs.

h boy, I’ve got a lot to say and not a lot of room to say it. For those keeping track, I’m almost ready for Christmas and the presents may even be wrapped come Christmas morning!

We are finishing this paper, celebrating Christmas with our family and friends, and then we will back in the office December 29th to start working on the January 7th edition!

me there was the Red CF3.

That bat — now illegal, by the way — was sitting under the tree on Christmas morning, and I was one happy 12-yearold. At the time, it felt like the key to every baseball dream I had.

2011: I was turning 16 that January, and all I could think about was getting a car. On Christmas morning, my dad handed me the keys to a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was awesome… with one small problem — it didn’t run yet.

We spent the next few months getting it road-ready, and it turned out to be a great first car for me and, eventually, for my brother too.

2014: I had my heart set on a Yeti cooler — yeah, one of those entirely too expensive coolers. But man, are they worth it. I still have it sitting in my garage and use it every summer. It’s one of those gifts that just keeps paying off and will probably last forever.

2017: By this point, I was BIG into fishing and had my heart set on a really nice baitcasting rod. I did my research and landed on a Lew’s Performance rod, which my Nanny surprised me

with. She even had it shipped all the way from a Bass Pro Shop in Texas.

I’ve caught some absolute monsters on that rod over the years. I even took it out on New Year’s Eve and caught what was potentially a state-record pickerel — then tossed it back without ever measuring it. Still not sure if that was the right move, but it makes for a pretty good story.

I know gifts aren’t the reason for the season, but they are a big part of it.

They’re one of the ways people show love and care for one another. So this Christmas, I’ll leave you with two simple reminders: Be thankful. Take the time to genuinely thank the people who thought of you and gave you a gift this holiday season.

Give with intention. Choose meaningful gifts and give them with love.

Slow down, be thoughtful, and pick something that shows the people in your life how much they matter to you.

“I’ll Love You ‘til the Day I Die”: Praising “It’s a Wonderful Life”

ever before has there been anyone like you. You are something that never existed before and will never exist again. Isn’t that wonderful?”

Thus spoke director Frank Capra on “It’s a Wonderful Life,” which he considered the greatest of his own works. James Stewart also repeatedly called it his favorite among the roughly 80 films he made.

Fittingly then, Rotten Tomatoes dubs “IAWL,” “the holiday classic to define all holiday classics” — while the American Film Institute named it No. 1 on a 2006 list of the most inspiring movies ever made.

So this last of four December pieces on the film will try to pin down why it works so well; and we really must start with Capra, whose quote above points to the film’s message.

“There are just two things that are important,” the director insisted in a 1946 interview. “One is to strength-

en the individual’s belief in himself, and the other, even more important right now, is to combat a modern trend toward atheism.”

Yes: In the most vivid and downto-earth terms, “IAWL” shows that every person is vitally valuable; and moreover, that God is in control — even when everything seems to be falling apart.

Indeed, the film’s frame narrative facilitates this beautifully: By having angels review George Bailey’s tumultuous life, we are given a “heavenly perspective” — reminded that we don’t have “the big picture” on our own lives — that God takes a different view — that he is using even our failures and foibles in ways we don’t yet understand.

“IAWL” is based on a short story called “The Greatest Gift.” It was written by Philip Van Doren Stern and mailed to 200 of his friends as a Christmas card — after he was unable to find a publisher. (With

the film’s popularity, however, it is now available in book form.) Stern based his tale on Dickens’ Christmas Carol — and so we can note how, like that classic work, his story inJoseph W. volves a supernatuSmith III ral visitor providing the protagonist with a different perspective on his own life.

Yet both Stern and “IAWL” reverse Dickens: In the latter, a rotten man is shown how no one will miss him when he’s gone — whereas “Wonderful Life” takes a decent man and shows him exactly how much the world needs him.

Along the same lines, both tales involve a grouchy misanthrope (to which group we might add the Grinch); and both likewise revolve around a money-leading business that helps families afford homes (though Scrooge, of course, does it at exorbitant rates). As seen in so many other Christmas stories, there seems to be something archetypal about

home and family at this time of year.

And speaking of reversal: Note also how the movie’s ending neatly flips the earlier bank-run: Nearly every single character who demanded money now arrives to give it back — reminding George that “no man is a failure who has friends.”

And in this way, George Bailey — who once wanted to leave Bedford Falls and see the world — comes to understand that home is more important than his own hopes and dreams. And thus, after humbling himself — first before Potter and then in a desperate prayer to God — George finally sets aside personal ambition once and for all; for he declares at last, “I don’t care what happens to me!”

Through his past actions, George has really already lived this out; but now he makes peace with it — grasping fully that family, friends, home and home-town are really what makes for a wonderful life.

And so, as he himself proclaims while stumbling up the street near the end: “Merry Christmas, movie house!”

Remembering John Troisi

wo weeks ago, this area suffered the loss of one of its most outstanding citizens and a man dedicated to the service of others — John Troisi.

I knew John, maybe not as well as many other people, but I was still able to get a sense of the man and his love of humanity and serving that humanity in a variety of ways, such as his huge involvement with the church that he loved — St. Boniface — to his service with the Williamsport Kiwanis Club for more than 50 years.

John was part of a regretfully vanishing generation of people who dedicated themselves to being active in a variety of ways to help make their community a better place for others.

He never hesitated to offer his help to a worthy cause.

But he was a lot more than that; he was a warm and friendly guy who always managed to greet you with his infectious smile. He made you feel like you were the most important

person in the room.

He and I shared a love of baseball and baseball history, and he could always regale me with tales of his beloved Dodgers. It made me feel good that I was able to lend him a book about the Dodgers of the 1960s called “The Last Innocents.” He thanked me profusely for lending it to him and said how much he enjoyed it.

John was a fixture at the Little League World Series with his camera recording the big moments of the games.

His dedication to Little League yielded him the well-deserved W. Howard Hartman Friendship Award. No one was ever a stranger to him.

Always at his side, if not physically, spiritually, was his beloved wife Patsy, who was the real light of John’s life.

I would also like to include in this tribute the recollections of two other people who knew John.

Jack Houston is the current president of the Williamsport Kiwanis Club and knew him well through that, as well as St. Boniface.

“I worked with John Troisi from

1975 to 1979 at St. Boniface Parish Community on Washington Blvd. I was a member of the priests’ staff and a teacher at St. John Neumann High School. In 2021, I returned to Williamsport to retire and joined John as a member of the Kiwanis Club. For the past three years, I met with John at weekly Club meetings and service opportunities in the community,” Houston told Webb Weekly.

“John Troisi was the strength and spirit of the St. Boniface Parish community during the early 1970s. Faced with the destruction of St. Boniface Church in 1972 by a huge fire, John served as President of the Parish Council and emerged as a steady and inspiring leader. He became the driving force behind more than 300 volunteers, organizing an array of committees that worked tirelessly toward the construction of a new church on the same site.

“Throughout this three-year journey, John Troisi was not only rebuilding a church, but also strengthening a community. His vision, perseverance, and deep faith inspired unity, hope, and commitment, resulting in the

magnificent church that stands today as a testament to his leadership and devotion to the parish. John had a vision of the Church as the ‘People of God’ — an idea and image that forms a community and a network of service and care for others.”

Houston continued, “Over the past three years, I have been a member of the Williamsport Kiwanis Club and currently serve as its President.

Through my conversations with John, I have come to appreciate his proud Kiwanis legacy. A 53-year member who followed in his father’s Kiwanis footsteps, John has long exemplified the spirit of service. A devoted member of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsport, he was named ‘Kiwanian of the Year’ in 1992, served for many years as the club’s beloved ‘Joke of the Day’ teller at weekly meetings, and proudly hosted the organization’s annual ‘Ray Keyes Salute to Little League Baseball’ luncheon. John welcomed ESPN guest, Julie Foudy, to the luncheon, and a beautiful friendship took place, and Kiwanis is happy that Julie Foudy joined the club because of John Troisi’s love for Little League and chil-

“John was a powerful source of positive energy. He consistently encouraged people through specific, authentic affirmation, recognizing strengths and possibilities that others might overlook. Where some see problems, John saw potential, often serving as a catalyst for others to believe in themselves and take meaningful action.

“From the past to the present, John embodied a progressive spirit. He anticipated change rather than resist it, willing to experiment, and com-

mitted to continuous improvement.

Tradition, for John Troisi, was not a constraint but a foundation — something to build upon in the pursuit of a more just, thoughtful, and equitable future.

“John Troisi was a legend in his own time — he was a man for others.”

Wayne Palmer knew John through his photographic activities.

“John Troisi was a valued member of the Susquehanna Valley Shutterbugs for 25 years,” Palmer said. “John would take annual photo excursions out west, frequently selling the imag-

In addition to winning several awards at the group’s photo shows, he was a familiar face at the reception table at the shows, along with his wife, Patsy. John was known for seeing the donation basket with large bills to encourage donations, which worked well. His presence lit up the room, and his ‘true story’ jokes were a joy. He will be missed.”

WILLIAMSPORT, PA — A new specialized automotive service has arrived in Lycoming County as Ironclad Vehicle Undercoating officially opened its doors this past October. Owned by Mort Neely and Yancy Cupp, and operated by Cupp’s son Connor Cupp, the business has already seen strong demand, undercoating vehicles seven days a week from its modern facility at 2575 Lycoming Creek Road.

Neely and Cupp launched Ironclad after identifying a growing need for a dedicated, professional undercoating and rust-prevention center within the area.

Their new shop features top-of-the-line spray equipment, industrial-grade lifts capable of handling larger vehicles, and a layout designed exclusively for corrosion-protection work. The goal, they say, is to offer a higher standard of preventative maintenance than general repair shops can typically provide.

Cupp, who also owns Yancy’s Auto Sales in partnership with McKinney Speed Shop, is no stranger to the issues caused by rust. His frequent visits to regional auto auctions have given him a firsthand look at the number of vehicles suffering from structural damage severe enough to fail Pennsylvania state safety inspections. “So many of these problems could have been prevented,” Cupp explained, “if the vehicles had been properly treated early on.”

Neely brings an equally strong background to the operation. Voted Williamsport’s Man of the Year in 2015, he and Cupp have been friends for several years, originally meeting through Cupp’s Vacuum Center. The pair spent the past year training hands-on with Troops Undercoating in Paxinos, PA, learning the specialized techniques and product knowledge required to deliver long-lasting, high-quality results.

While undercoating is traditionally associated with pickup trucks, the Ironclad team stresses that SUVs and passenger cars are just as vulnerable to corrosion— especially with the increasing use of new road-treatment chemicals. In addition to rock salt, PennDOT now regularly applies brine, a liquid mixture that studies have shown can be up to 100 times more corrosive to vehicle undercarriages.

Independent research shows that vehicles treated with lanolin-based products such as WoolWax or Fluid Film can last two to three decades longer before developing the structural failures commonly seen in untreated vehicles. These coatings protect high-risk components including frames, brake lines, fuel lines, body mounts, rocker panels, and suspension components.

With trained technicians, modern equipment, and a focus on customer education, Ironclad Vehicle Undercoating aims to provide a reliable, long-term solution for drivers looking to protect their investment.

It’s the week of the best holiday of the year.

Why does December always seem to fly by so fast? There is always so much to see and do, but it always feels so rushed. We just went from December 1 to December 18 in like, two days. How is this possible!?

With our family, a lot of our Christmas get-togethers aren’t until January, so that really spreads it out for us. But this time of year, is always so special and magical.

It just makes me sad to see it end — especially all the beautiful lights, music, and

My gift to you this year is blessing you with this story of me on Candy Cane Lane a few years ago. It cracks me up every time I think about it. Every year we walk up, my kids and hubby (even me) point to the exact spot where it happened, and we all laugh.

We always walk up on the left side and walk down on the right. It had snowed a lot that year, and everything was covered with snow, which made it look so beautiful. There is nothing more beautiful than Christmas lights covered in glittery snow.

I’m infatuated!

My husband and I strolled hand in hand through Santa’s workshop area while the kids walked ahead, checking everything out, their breath making little clouds in the cold air. Fresh snow had fallen earlier, giving everything a picture-perfect Christmas-card quality. I was feeling downright festive!!

Halfway down the right side, we approached the two homes that look almost alike but there is so much to see in both yards. Colored lights cascaded over every surface, and their front yards featured this gorgeous bank covered in lights and decorations. I was locked on the lights

twinkling under the snow, and that’s when things went sideways.

Literally.

My foot caught on one of those uneven sidewalk slabs. Ya know, the ones where winter has pushed them up just enough to create a booby trap. Instead Andrea McElroy of falling forward like a normal person, I somehow defied physics and went completely sideways, like I’d stepped on a banana peel from a cartoon. And where did I land? Right on that beautiful, light-covered bank. *enter head smack here* There I was, sprawled out in someone’s Christmas display like a life-sized chubby snow angel gone wrong, arms and legs just sprawled out in every direction. I was legit stuck and trying to get momentum to get my fat butt out of this predicament before more people could see me just lying there. Immediately, I thought of that scene from “A Christmas Story” where Ralphie’s little brother is so bundled up in his snowsuit that he falls over and just... lies there. “I can’t get up!” he wails, flailing like a turtle on its back.

That was me. Except I was 40 years old, wedging myself into someone’s landscaping, taking out a strand of lights in the process!

I tried to roll. I tried to sit up. My winter coat had other ideas! My hubby rushed over, trying not to laugh, while my kids stood there giggling so hard they could barely breathe. They were concerned, but I was cracking up at myself, so they were too.

My hubby helped me up as I brushed snow off my coat. I tried to straighten a string of lights I’d definitely displaced, and checked to make sure no lawn ornaments had met their demise. The house was still intact. My dignity? Not so much.

We continued our walk, but not before I turned back to admire the scene of the crime. That bank really was beautifully decorated. I’d just given it an unexpected focal point: ME. I giggled that you could see exactly where my body lay on the bank. I wonder if anyone walked by later and thought, “Some sap must have taken a fall here!” Haha!!

The thing is, we’re still laughing about it. Every time we drive past Candy Cane Lane now, someone brings it up. “Remember when Mom took out those Christmas lights?” (I do pay attention to that uneven sidewalk now because I know right where it is!)

So if you visit Candy Cane Lane this season and see a particularly well-decorated bank on the right side of the street, just know that I’ve already quality-tested it for you. Five stars. Very soft landing.

Homemade Egg Nog This is one of the most scrumptious Egg Nog recipes I have ever tasted.

(Does contain raw egg! Hey, I’m still here and have made it for years.)

Ingredients: • 3 cups whole milk • 1 cup heavy cream • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon or three cinnamon sticks • 1 vanilla bean pod, split and seeds removed • 1 tsp nutmeg, plus more for garnish • 5 eggs, separated • 2/3 cup granulated sugar

Directions: In a saucepan, combine milk, cream, cinnamon, vanilla bean, vanilla seeds, and nutmeg. Bring to the boil over a medium heat. Once boiling, remove from the heat and allow to steep. (Steep meaning let the cinnamon sticks and vanilla bean pod infuse in the milk.)

In a large bowl or a stand mixer, beat the egg yolks and sugar until combined and until thick ribbons form when the whisk is lifted. Slowly whisk in the cooled milk, then continue whisking until the mixture is combined and smooth. (Don’t forget to take out your vanilla pod and cinnamon sticks!) Refrigerate overnight or for up to 3 days. Serve and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn?

Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world, which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

ancestry is something we simply inherit. We had no part in establishing it, and we can’t do a thing to change it. It is what it is. When considering our identity, that can be a good thing – or a bad thing – or both.

The descendants of George Washington openly celebrate their ancestry, while the descendants of slave owners naturally avoid the topic. Ancestry, however, can be messy.

George Washington, the man who led a war for freedom from tyranny, was also a slave owner. It is a painful paradox. Caution: the distant past is not the best place to look for your identity.

Our parents and grandparents can strongly influence our identity — our recent past.

Will we strive to be like them, or will we seek to break free of their dysfunction and bondage and start our own story? Good, bad, or indifferent, we too often allow our parents and grandparents to shape our identity. The result is a crisis.

Here’s the good news about ancestry: the distant and recent past can influence your identity, but only if you choose to let it. It’s true. No one can define you or chain you to the past. Did you hear that? Your alcoholic grandparents cannot define your identity, and neither can your abusive parents.

The reason no one can define your identity, including you, is that your identity is not found in you or in the people and experiences that have influenced you. Your identity transcends your ancestry and all the noise of this world – and there is a lot of noise.

their true identity: they were children of their Father in heaven. He was their origin.

See Matthew 6:9. They knew that the source of their lives was the River of Life that flows from the throne of God. See Revelation 22:1. They knew they were not their own, that they had been bought at a price and belonged to God. See I Corinthians 6:1920. That identity transformed their lives and empowered them to overcome the difficulties of their ancestry and the noise of this world. They served God, their family, and their community with passion and purpose – and they did so their entire lives.

At eighty-eight years of age, my dad was hit by a massive stroke. His left side was completely paralyzed. Talking was very difficult, but everyone who came into his hospital room heard “Brother Bill” speak of how his heavenly Father had transformed his life.

Even a paralyzing stroke could not turn him into a victim. He knew his origin and the source from which his life flowed. He was a child of his heavenly Father. It was his identity.

Dad died three weeks later. His death was devastating to Mom, but she never stopped talking about her heavenly Father. A year later, she had to move out of their home and into assisted living, but Dorothy never stopped sharing with others about God’s great love for her. Even the worst experiences of her life could not turn her into a victim. She was a child of God, and she knew it.

It was her identity.

o you know where you came from? The answer to that question is your origin. As we consider the first of The Five Big Questions of Life, there is no doubt that origin is the key factor in understanding our identity.

Every river rises from a source. The Susquehanna River rises from Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, New York. If you trace the 444 miles of our local river from the Chesapeake Bay to the source of its headwaters, you will always come to Otsego Lake. It is its origin.

You and I also have a source from which we rise. If we trace our lives back to their origin, we will always come to the same place. Keep that thought in mind, and we’ll come back to it shortly.

Moses was born a Hebrew but raised an Egyptian. In the clash of those cultures, he struggled to understand who he was. As we discussed last week, his identity crisis got him into a lot of trouble. That’s what an identity crisis does. Don’t forget, previous articles in this series are always available at www.webbweekly.com.

For clarification, ‘origin’ is not ‘ancestry’.

Ancestry is the history of the people who came before you, but it has nothing to do with your origin. This is important because if you confuse ancestry with origin, you are setting yourself up for an identity crisis.

Ancestry is our immutable history. Immutable describes something that is unchangeable. Because it describes the past,

I included it in The Five Questions because it is a question we ask, but it’s not the question we should ask. The right question is this: “Whose am I?” That’s a completely different question, and Tim your answer to that quesHartzell tion will determine your identity.

My father was raised in difficult circumstances. His parents had seven children, though they were never married. His father was a self-employed accountant by day, and a bar piano man by night. He often came home late, drunk, and angry. It was a hard life.

My mother’s father and mother were also never married. My mom’s mom had seven children, but to three different men. My mom was the youngest, and when she was seven years old, her mother was murdered.

When she was eleven, her father died. My mom spent the rest of her early years being raised by her much older siblings. It was a hard life.

My mother and father could have been defined by their past, by tragedies, and by the unfair nature of this world. They could have identified as victims and blamed the world for their problems. They could have wallowed in that victimhood and passed generational dysfunction on to their four sons.

They could have, but they didn’t.

Recalling Christmastime 95 Years Ago

for $1.69 L.L. Stearns was selling men’s raincoats from $2.95 to $8, men’s spats from $1.50 to $3, linen tablecloths from $2.95 to $ 10, and silk bedspreads from $2.98 to $16.

A headline on December 23 proclaimed “PP&L May Enter Natural Gas Field.” They applied to the Public Utility Commission to produce, distribute, and sell natural gas.

Playing at the Rialto Theater was “Big Money,” starring Robert Armstrong and James Gleason. At the Capitol Theater was “A Lady Surrenders” starring Conrad Nagel.

The “Great Depression” started in October 1929. Despite the economic hard times, the local newspaper, the Gazette and Bulletin, reported that the 1930 Christmas shopping season would be as good as the 1929 one for local merchants.

he world of Christmas 95 years ago, 1930, was a very different place than it is now, and we at Webb Weekly thought it might be interesting to look back at that Christmas.

On Christmas Day 1930, noted Maestro Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra were featured on the stations of the National Broadcasting Company’s radio network playing Christmas and other classical musical offerings.

Locally, at Kline’s on the Square, they were selling electric train sets for $3.96, a velocipede for $3.25, a Dolly Ann Kitchen Set for $1.49, and a large pedal car for $2.35.

Williamsport “has never been so illuminated for Christmas.” It said the Vallamont and Grampian sections of Williamsport were particularly bright and well-lit by Christmas lights. It also said the number of decorated Christmas trees was fully 50 percent more than in previous years.

Christmas festivities were marred locally on Christmas Day when two children were killed, and their parents were severely burned in a house fire in Montgomery. The dead were: Betty Jane Tilburg, four years old, and Abby Louise Tilburg, aged six, and their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tilburg, were severely burned in the blaze at their Main Street home.

It was a happier time at Williamsport’s charitable institutions. The 108 staff members and residents of the Williamsport Home for the Friendless had a sumptuous Christmas dinner, and presents were given out as well. The 90 residents of the Williamsport City Home were

given “a real old-fashioned Christmas.” The 95 people who spent the holiday at the Williamsport Hospital had a lovely Christmas as well, and Santa also delivered a new baby girl there.

The Salvation Army that year gave out 210 Christmas baskets that contained all the fixings for a good Christmas dinner.

The Salvation Army also presented a movie matinee at the Rialto Theater for the poor children and their families.

In 1930, John S. Fisher was Governor of Pennsylvania; Lycoming County President Judge was Harvey Whitehead; the current Lycoming County Commissioners were: Charles Rothfuss, Fred Applegate, and Joseph Nicely; Williamsport Mayor was Herbert T. Ames; Louis Russie was Chief of Police; and Michael Clark was Fire Chief.

Williamsport had a population of about 45,000.

In response to homelessness, Family Promise of Lycoming County brings the faith community together to help families regain their housing, their independence, and their dignity. FPLC is a non-profit organization that works with a partnership network of congregations within a community that aims to help children and their families who are facing homelessness. In addition to serving local homeless families, we offer an opportunity for volunteers of all faiths to work to reduce homelessness and transform lives in our community.

And then, when the slightly older Ebenezer lets Belle get shoved aside by his growing greed, a watching Scrooge looks right at his young self and says bluntly, “Oh, you fool. … Don’t let her go.”

Much later, in the future section, as Scrooge sees the Cratchits’ grieving their lost son, Melrose takes a sentence from Dickens’ narrator and gives it to Ebenezer instead: “Oh, spirit of Tiny Tim, thy childish essence was from God!” All of which is to say that this show satisfied the die-hard Dickens fan (that would be me) as well as regular folks seeking seasonal cheer.

Normally, one would write a piece like this either before or during the run — to urge better attendance.

But actually, CTL didn’t need my promotion; Fox told me they were completely sold out.

Whatever they put on their Christmas list next year, you’d better check it twice — and get your tickets early.

harles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” has been around so long that early film versions are now closer to the author’s era than to our own. Yet unlike Scrooge’s grouchy side, this tale won’t be disappearing anytime soon.

And the latest local version showed why.

Presented by Williamsport’s Community Theatre League over the first two weekends in December, this stellar staging was a snowstorm of seasonal spirit, with colorful costuming, characters, comedy and — yes — a cadre of carols!

The show was directed by Marie Fox, a recently retired drama teacher who still directs for Williamsport High School — and CTL, of course.

Fox and co. used a clever 2023 adaptation by Rob Melrose — featuring roughly three dozen roles. This is

achieved by fleshing out the families (Belle’s and Bob’s); by filling the stage with ensemble singers and dancers (e.g., Fezziwig’s ball); and most notably, by distributing huge chunks of the text among numerous narrators.

And if you think about it, that makes sense: Not only is Dickens’ prose complex and effusive; but also, a single narrator reciting (for example) the nine-paragraph prologue — well, that would be tough on speaker and audience alike.

And so, as an instance, when Dickens describes the vast array of foodstuffs laid out before the second spirit, this version gives one item at a time to seven or eight different characters; the terms thus bounce about the stage like a bout of linguistic Ping Pong — or, perhaps, a friendly snowball fight.

Fox’s sensational cast included numerous children — and many actors taking more than one part. It

would be tough to praise them all individually — but special kudos to: Jason Kriner (Scrooge); Chris Dailey (Marley); William Martel’s Fred; Tim Heilmann’s vigorous Fezziwig; and the two families — particularly young Jojo Cipriani as Tiny Tim (honest, it’s like this tyke was born to play the role).

The tech in this show was likewise terrific: lighting; smoke effects; projections of rural landscapes and London rooftops; and those Christmasy-costumes — all the more remarkable considering the quick changes needed by multi-part actors.

One nice touch was to cast females as the two alms-collectors (those seeking contributions from Scrooge at his office). Not only did this allow for more intimidation from his gruff rebuff — but also, with one of them near Scrooge’s age, their final pledge of a later visit hints at future romance for the remade recluse.

So, while a hot shower is very tempting when it’s cold out, try to keep your head out of the shower stream and adjust the temp when it’s time to wash and condition. Also, your hair may not need to be washed as often as you

shower. Shower caps come in handy for no-wash days. You get the comfort of a hot shower for your neck and shoulders, while keeping your hair protected. I just ordered a four-pack from Amazon!

In addition to switching up your water temperature, consider swapping in a hydrating shampoo that’s formulated to cleanse without drying out your strands. Target brand Method’s Serene Escape Smoothing Shampoo Sulfate & Silicone Free makes for a simple switch. Or try their Simply Nourish Moisturizing version, which is also sulfate- and silicone-free. If you’re looking for a system of haircare, there’s Native’s Strengthening Hair Trio. An almond and shea butter-based shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask set, all three of which are formulated to reduce damage, strengthen strands, and prevent frizz.

Hair masks are great for deep conditioning, which is recommended at least weekly in the coldest months of the year. You can also use a leave-in conditioner to add moisture that will protect your hair shaft from both dry and cold air, as well as prevent static.

A few other tips for healthy hair this winter include getting regular trims to prevent split ends. Nourish your hair from within by drinking lots of water and maintaining a healthy diet. In addition to geographic isolation, socioeconomic challenges further widen the gap in maternal health care. Rural Pennsylvania has higher rates of poverty, lower average educational attainment, and fewer employment opportunities than the Commonwealth’s urban centers.

Additionally, people in rural communities often struggle with access to healthy food, reliable housing, and adequate mental health support. The opioid crisis, which has heavily impacted parts of rural Pennsylvania, introduces further pregnancy complications, increasing rates of neonatal abstinence syndrome and placing additional strain on under-resourced local health systems.

To address disparities in maternal healthcare in rural Pennsylvania, AmeriHealth Caritas recently held a community baby shower in Williamsport.

Many maternal-health-related organizations, along with representatives from social service agencies relevant to new and expecting mothers, came together at the River Valley Regional YMCA. This was one of 14 such events the Medicaid managed care organization held around the Commonwealth this year, providing information about health resources, early education, and

I

n the labyrinth of local government, where perception often masquerades as reality and cynicism drowns out progress, the December 11, 2025, meeting of Lycoming County commissioners revealed a tale of two narratives that perfectly encapsulate the challenges facing our community.

The golf course debate continues to captivate public attention, though perhaps for all the wrong reasons. What was once a financial albatross around the county’s neck has transformed into something approaching a success story, yet the specter of past struggles continues to haunt every discussion.

The new ownership has not merely met their loan obligations. Still, it has exceeded payment schedules with remarkable consistency, turning what many considered a perpetual drain on county resources into a genuine asset.

This transformation extends beyond mere dollars and cents. The facility has become a cornerstone of community engagement, hosting countless charity events that benefit causes ranging from youth athletics to local food banks. These tournaments and fundraisers have woven the golf course into the fabric of our charitable landscape, creating value that transcends simple accounting ledgers.

Yet a vocal contingent remains steadfast in their conviction that the golf course contin-

ues hemorrhaging money, despite evidence to the contrary. This persistent pessimism reflects a broader phenomenon plaguing local discourse: the tendency of some individuals to approach every development with predetermined skepticism rather than genuine evaluation. When facts conflict with entrenched opinions, too many choose the comfort of familiar complaints over the challenge of acknowledging progress.

The irony becomes apparent when we consider where our attention should actually focus. While commissioners field repeated questions about a golf course that has turned its financial corner, a far more pressing issue receives minimal public scrutiny. Our Veterans Affairs office operates with just four staff members serving nine thousand veterans throughout the county.

This stark disparity between resources and responsibilities represents a genuine crisis hiding in plain sight.

These veterans, who sacrificed for our freedoms and security, deserve better than a skeletal support system stretched beyond reasonable limits. The commissioners face the difficult task of balancing public perception with practical governance. They must continue defending legitimate successes while advocating for resources where they are desperately needed. This requires political courage and

communication skills that transcend typical governmental messaging.

As citizens, we bear responsibility for elevating discourse beyond reflexive criticism toward constructive engagement. This means researching issues before forming opinions, celebrating genuine progress while identifying real problems, and supporting solutions even when they require difficult choices or additional investment.

The holiday season reminds us that community strength emerges from how we treat our most vulnerable members. Our veterans, who served when their country needed them most, deserve morve than bureaucratic indifference disguised as fiscal responsibility. While we debate the merits of amenities that have already proven their worth, heroes who defended our way of life navigate systems designed more for convenience than service.

The most important lesson from this commissioner’s meeting involves perspective and priorities. Success should be acknowledged and built upon, not perpetually questioned by those with agendas unrelated to facts. Meanwhile, genuine challenges require urgent attention and resources, not political calculations about what generates favorable headlines.

n spite of the fact that there were 48 quarts of recently confiscated champagne in the vaults of the city hall, Williamsport dedicated its new boulevard lighting system with nothing stronger than rain and music Saturday evening. Old inconsiderate Jupiter Pluvius furnished the deluge of rain while the Verdi and Repasz bands furnished an equally copious amount of music.

The celebration took place promptly at 9 o’clock Saturday evening when someone at the powerhouse of the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company threw the switch which shot the current through the new boulevard system and dispelled forever the darkness and gloom of night from the central part of the city. Coinci-

dent with the flare of light, the Verdi and Repasz bands stationed at either end of the district struck up stirring march tunes and marched up to the courthouse where the celebration sponsored by the Williamsport Merchants Association was held.

The dedication ceremonies were in the charge of Frank Patchen, Thomas Morgan, Henry Myers and other members of the merchants’ group, together with Mayor Archibald Hoagland and Councilmen Gallagher and Cohick. Mr. Patchen, speaking for the merchants’ association, complimented the citizens of bringing the boulevard lighting system into being and praised the city administration for expediting the installation. The city of Williamsport the past two years has witnessed an era of progress unsurpassed by anything in recent history, said Patchen.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.

Right up until the plane door closed, Paul held hope that Darren would decide to come on the vacation they’d planned for and saved for, for months.

Alas, Darren was a no-show, which was not really a surprise.

Three weeks before the departure, he’d announced that their marriage wasn’t working for him anymore, and that he wanted a divorce. Paul had said he was going on the vacation anyhow. Why waste a perfectly good flight, or an already-booked B&B? He was going to Venice.

Darren just rolled his eyes.

Was that a metaphor for their entire marriage? Darren had always accused Paul of wanting too much.

He indicated now that he felt stifled. Still, Darren’s unhappiness hit Paul broadside and so there was Paul, alone in a romantic Italian city, fighting with an espresso machine in a loft owned by someone who looked like a frozen-food spokeswoman.

He couldn’t speak or understand Italian very well. He didn’t know his way around, and he got lost really often. But he felt anchored by a dog.

The dog – he liked to call it his dog – was a random stray, like so many others wandering around Venice

But amid the festivities, it’s also a time when emergency departments see an uptick in preventable injuries and health concerns. You can take a few simple precautions that can help keep you and your loved ones safe, healthy, and able to enjoy all the season has to offer.

Be Mindful in the Kitchen Holiday cooking brings families together, and it’s also one of the most common sources of seasonal injuries. Hot stoves, knife slips, crowded countertops, and unfamiliar recipes can create the perfect environment for burns, cuts, and accidental fires. Keep pot handles turned inward, avoid loose sleeves near open flames, and designate

one person to stay in the kitchen when something is on the stove. If you’re hosting, make the cooking a team effort, but ensure everyone knows where safety supplies like fire extinguishers and oven mitts are located.

he Holiday Season is winding down, the year is coming to a close, and folks are conjuring up their New Year’s resolutions. There are always the ever-popular promises to oneself to lose weight or to finally set up a budget and get our finances in order. These, however, seem like goals that are easier to make and harder to follow through with. It seems to me that a resolution to reduce the stress in our lives is a goal that is achievable and will go a very long way to improving our health and increasing our longevity. Making such a resolution to reduce stress is easy enough, and the good news is that achieving that goal is easier than you might think.

Every morning, as I begin the day, I enjoy a mug of hot coffee or tea and read the day’s entry in “The Daily Stoic,” a book containing 366 med-

itations on wisdom, perseverance, and the art of living. Thoughts and insights from some of the early philosophers, such as Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus, are presented for you to contemplate and perhaps adopt in the pursuit of becoming the best person you can be. It is a book I highly recommend. A recent passage titled “Take a Hike” really hit home because it went into detail about something I have done myself and have advised others to do over the years.

The Roman philosopher Seneca wrote in “On Tranquility of Mind” that “We should take wandering outdoor walks, so that the mind might be nourished and refreshed by the open air and deep breathing.” That day’s passage went on to explain the following: In a notoriously loud city like Rome, it was impossible to get much peace and quiet. I don’t mean numerous laps around the nearby mall, but instead get outside, get some fresh air, and let the stress just slip away as you focus on the really important things in life that put a smile on your face!

With that in mind, when weather conditions allow, make sure you take a walk! Especially in the future, when you get stressed or overwhelmed, take a walk. When you have a tough problem to solve or a difficult decision to make, take a walk. When you want to be creative, take a walk.

on a sheet of ice is pretty common, so something else I highly recommend for added safety is a pair of ice cleats; they have saved the day on many occasions.

When it comes to ice fishing, safety is something to be very concerned about, and these are things you should be aware of before heading out. Certainly, dressing properly for the cold is important, but most of us are already well aware of how to handle it. A pair of good, well-insulated boats goes a long way to adding to your comfort, and you may want to take a couple of those hand warmers along as well.

Well, there is a lot more equipment you will want to add if you plan to get into the ice-fishing business, but I’ll save that for some additional writing. In the meantime, be safe when “walking on the water”.

So, how do you avoid these potential hazards? If you are new to ice fishing, I highly recommend going with some experienced ice fishermen the first couple of times, especially those who are very familiar with the lake you are fishing. Even then, that’s no guarantee, but it’s a good start. Those of us who have been in the ice fishing business for a while usually will be found wearing one of the newer ice fishing outfits that are warm and comfortable, but more importantly, they will keep you afloat if you accidentally go through. You will still get wet, but you should stay afloat. Also, you should have a pair of spikes on a lanyard around your neck, so they’re easy to reach and can grip the ice to help pull you out. If you don’t have one of the floating-type outfits, it’s a good idea to wear a life vest. I know they are bulky and can get in the way, but they could save your life. Obviously, slipping
