Family, Dreams, and Baseball

W

hat an amazing time of year to live in our little corner of God’s green earth. First up, if you are in town for the 79th playing of the Little League World Series, let me welcome you. I wish you and your team, as you spent this summer on this fantastic journey, good luck, great health, and safe travels. For those of you who have just come as fans of baseball, you’re about to witness The Greatest Show on Earth when it comes to youth sports. Although everybody wants to make it here first as a player, then as a parent, possibly a coach, or just a proud member of a hometown Little League, the good news for you is you don’t have all that stress of wanting to win that final game. My advice to those who are here cheering on one of these 20 teams that have won their way here, as hard as it is to do, is to sit back, relax, and consider this a celebration for all the hard work the kids put in. Please don’t take me the wrong way, I always want to win that last game, but you’ve got to keep things in perspective and realize you’ve already won the golden ticket to the Little League capital of the world. We are very friendly folks around these parts, so please, if you need anything, don’t be afraid to ask. I have spent my

whole life in the friendly confines of the West Branch Valley, and I look forward to talking baseball and answering any questions possible for Little League folks. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll point you in the right direction. I am proud every year to say I played my Little League baseball right here in South Williamsport, for Kings Motel and the Little Mountaineer Little League. I was blessed with great teammates, great coaches, and an amazing Little League experience. My coaches, Bob English and Dick Whiteman, may now be coaching from above, but they’ll never be forgotten. My All-Star dream back in the late seventies was to win my way from Kane Street, where my business is now located, up to the top of the hill and play at Howard J. Lamade Stadium. Back then, it was a much different tournament that featured only eight teams traveling that road to Williamsport. And did I mention that when you lost, the journey was over? There was no double elimination or even pool play. So, my All-Star run was a short one, but I still got to experience the dream of every Little Leaguer. I’m sure, as you’re reading this, most of you are thinking of your Little League baseball experience. Incidentally, my coaches also called Kane Street home back in the day. I was then blessed to coach both my sons

in Little League baseball. They were much better players than I ever was, and both enjoyed All-Star success. My oldest son, with me in the dugout, even made a run at a state title, unfortunately, with visions of Bristol dancing in our Jim Webb Jr. heads, it came to an end. But what an amazing summer it was. That gets me to a couple more serious points that often get forgotten about when young athletes reach a high level of success. Please remember, whether it’s your kid playing or you’re just watching, they are just 11 and 12-year-old kids. The level they perform at is truly remarkable, and sometimes folks lose sight of that. The next thing is about something that has become tougher and tougher in the world we now live in, being an umpire. Please remember the umpires you are watching are also experiencing this amazing journey to the LLWS. They have earned their way here, but are human beings just like you and me. Please show them the great respect they deserve, and that includes those umps back home at your local league. The world is in search of more umpires, officials, and referees. Please be part of the solution, not the problem. Maybe you would make a great umpire. I’ll finish my thoughts about umpires up

with a problem we have here in our area, unfortunately, none of them are getting any younger. For whatever reason, the generations behind them haven’t kept up with the demand for these special people. A sincere thank you to every umpire for doing your best at every level, from Little League right on up to the college teams that play here in our local area. Moving right along, a tip of my 79th Little League World Series cap to Pat Wilson, another lifer from here in Williamsport. I have known Pat for a long time and he’s one of the good guys. Just in case you missed it, this will be his second World Series as Little League Baseball’s president and chief executive officer. Pat took the reins from Steve Keener, whom I’d like to give a shoutout to and thank again for his years of dedication to improving the game and organization. I will wrap up this week with the Little League pledge and a final thought. I trust in God. I love my country. And will respect its laws. I will play fair and strive to win. But win or lose, I will always do my best. Great and powerful words to teach kids and ask them to live by while they’re growing up. Just think how much better the world would be if the adults followed the same pledge. There is much within the pages ahead about the LLWS and our area. Let’s be safe out there and enjoy. God Bless America.

ell, here we are again. The unofficial beginning of the end of summer. The last couple of weeks before campfires and long evenings are replaced with early mornings and new backpacks. In other words — it’s Little League World Series season in Williamsport! And while I’m a little bummed to watch another summer fly by at warp speed (I feel like I haven’t even done anything summer yet), I can’t help but get excited. If my math is mathing — which is hit or miss on a good day — I believe this is my 23rd LLWS. And it’s one of my favorite times of the year, and one of my favorite things to do. My credentials are officially in hand, and I was just the 3rd person to pick mine up — just behind Scott Lowery and Ken Sawyer. Credential pick up was a little different this year, so I guess we were all a little excited to get them before the ESPN crowds roll in. Send good vibes because, I’m also waiting to hear back on my MLB Classic credentials. I was approved for two years, then denied last year. Given that the Braves are coming to town, and I’ve

story into the realms of thievery by two 12-yearold boys so stirred a woman spectator in police court yesterday afternoon that she gave the boys a severe talking to after Mayor Hugh Gilmore had disposed of the case. The woman did not make known her name. Instead, she cast hostile glances at reporters in the room. She left after the lads and their fathers departed from the court. She was still talking to the boys. The boys, Jacob DiBella, an Italian of 141 East Front Street, and Henry Ross, colored of 333 West Jefferson Street, were arrested for stealing several bicycles from Memorial Park. They showed Officer Hobart C. Beck where

the stolen bikes were hidden after they were taken into custody. Jacob and Henry admitted the thefts during the arraignment before Mayor Gilmore. They had admitted they had connived to steal the bicycles during several swimming expeditions together. Mayor Gilmore severely reprimanded the boys. He also asked their fathers to sign bail bonds of $200 to guarantee the good behavior of the lads. The bail bonds are effective until November 20. Both fathers signed. DiBella explained that he was working and was unable to keep track of his son. He said he had not been home for three days and nights. The Ross boy’s father also gave the same excuse and admitted that his boy, too, had run away from home several days ago. The boys said they had been sleeping in a barn in the central part of the city.

he Lycoming County Commissioners gathered to discuss financial recovery and regulatory urgency, two seemingly separate challenges that actually reflect the same reality: a county taking control of its own future. The landfill’s dramatic turnaround and the ongoing zoning strategy both demonstrate commissioners working to stabilize county operations and protect rural character from threats that arrive without warning. The county’s transition to external management by the Clinton County Solid Waste Authority generated a $1.5 million increase in net revenue for the county landfill. The previously debt-ridden facility transformed through strategic cost management and operational changes implemented by the new management team. What was once a financial drain on county resources became a genuine asset. The commissioners recognized this shift as evidence that sometimes bringing in specialized expertise produces results that internal operations cannot achieve. The landfill’s recovery freed up county resources for other pressing needs while demonstrating that even long-standing institutional problems can be solved through deliberate management decisions. The zoning discussion represented continuation of work already underway for

several weeks. The county originally passed a resolution declaring its 1991 data center zoning ordinance substantially invalid to trigger a curative amendment process. This action functions as an internal county and municipal regulatory mechanism, meaning the 180-day clock gives the county planning department and local townships a legally defined window to draft and implement entirely new rules without needing court filings to enforce the temporary freeze. Commissioners discussed how this window represents the actual operational deadline for protecting rural land. Once the 180 days expire, if local ordinances are not in place, data center development proposals will proceed under outdated regulatory frameworks that offer virtually no protection. The commissioners addressed something equally urgent but entirely different: public misinformation circulating on social media regarding the Bass Pro Shops project and the broader District at Lycoming Valley development. Specific, aggressive rumors have suggested that the county is using secret agreement to hide financial details or to cover up why the project faces delays. These rumors misrepresent how commercial real estate transactions actually function. The commissioners made direct statements explaining that non-disclosure agreements are standard, protective tools used in

COUNTY HALL commercial real estate negotiations. Their purpose is straightforward: preventing competing developers from finding out development plans early and artificially inflating local property values, which would ruin the project entirely. When a major retailer like Bass Pro Shops negotiates with a municipality, dozens of other developers would immediately recognize the location’s value and begin competing for adjacent properties. Prices would skyrocket. The original project economics would collapse. Non-disclosure agreements protect the developer, the municipality, and ultimately the community from this kind of speculative feeding frenzy. The commissioners emphasized that these agreements are completely standard practice, not evidence of hidden deals or financial manipulation. They are transparency tools in a different sense. They create the conditions under which genuine negotiation can happen without interference from outside parties seeking to profit from leaked information. The clarification mattered because community trust depends on residents understanding what their leaders are actually doing rather than accepting rumors generated from misunderstanding how commercial development works. What emerged from the meeting was a picture of county leadership managing multiple urgent challenges simultaneously. The landfill transition demonstrates that commissioners make hard decisions about governance and management when institu-

tional problems persist. The zoning strategy demonstrates that they recognize the data center threat as genuine and immediate, requiring legal action and coordination with local townships. The NDA clarification demonstrates that they are willing to address public misinformation directly rather than allowing rumors to damage community confidence in legitimate development projects. Lycoming County is Pennsylvania’s largest county by land area, a sprawling region where rural character and agricultural tradition define community identity. The commissioners understand that protecting this character requires both regulatory action and public communication. The 180-day window to update zoning ordinances will not stay open indefinitely. The opportunity to establish local control over data center development exists now, but the window will close. Simultaneously, major development projects like the District at Lycoming Valley represent genuine economic opportunity, but only if community members understand what is actually happening rather than what rumors suggest. The meeting demonstrated commissioners working across multiple fronts to stabilize county finances, protect rural land, and maintain public trust. These are not contradictory goals. They are different expressions of the same commitment: ensuring that Lycoming County remains a place where both responsible development and genuine community character can coexist.

A day at the Little League World Series. A trip to Knoebels. Hanging out with my family and friends. And my brother making himself sick on a tube of sugar. Those were summer traditions. And looking back now, they were pretty neat. So instead of being sad summer is over enjoy the time and make the most of it. Schedule out some fun things and have a ball! One of my favorite memories was when my dad would drop my buddy Tommy Baggett and me off in the morning, and his mom would pick us up that night. We would spend the whole day over at the little league complex. We did that for what felt like two weeks straight. At that age, we thought we were the big men on campus. Another summer tradition I will always remember was the last day before school started. My parents would take us to Knoebels. Even though there was always that little bit of sadness knowing summer was officially over, it was still special because we were spending that last day together as a family. And of course, there was my brother. He would always get one of those giant tubes filled with different fla-

a pound to 1-2 pounds a week is the sweet spot. low and steady eeps it off so much easier, and listen, honey, you didn’t gain that 20 pounds overnight. You sure as heck won’t lose it overnight either. Good things take time. You have to take the time to learn the skills for weight loss and eeping it off. y goal was 80lbs when I started in 2019. Here I am, still riding in the 60s. But I look at everything my body has been through in the past- how many years. It’s honestly amazing to me that I have ept it all off with how sic I was for so long. I have a healthy relationship with the scale, weighing in faithfully with my best friend, Tania Myers, by my side every week. We’ve texted each other faithfully every Friday for the past seven years of weigh-ins. We’re each other’s accountability. I’ll hit that goal

Webb. A few of my clients have through the years, actually! Fitness is not an all-or-nothing game. In this journey, we will explore how to hit your health goals without sacrificing your lifestyle. I work around the lifestyle you already have; we just make small tweaks over time that become lifestyle changes. ost fitness ar eting tells you that you need to completely overhaul your life to see results. You are told to cut out your favorite foods, starve yourself, and spend hours on a treadmill. I now firsthand that is a lie. I personally lost 65 pounds as of today, and have maintained that loss for over 7 years by focusing on one rule: consistency over perfection. I have client after client who I can use as references about my coaching skills and success rate. I also want to say this, and I say this to my clients before they even start with me. I am not a miracle worker. You aren’t going to lose 20 pounds in one month with me. I am not the coach for you if you want that. Anyone can lose weight fast by simply hardly eating or eating like a rabbit. Who wants to dread what they eat, never look forward to a meal, or feel hungry all the time? How is this living? No. I take the time to teach you to incorporate things you love, all while losing weight at a perfect pace. Half

“Whom Are You Writing To?” (Or Should It Be “Who”?) By Joseph W. Smith III

Here at “Weird Words,” we ran into this proble last wee when fighting the unnecessary rule against final prepositions (like “to” in my headline). If we obeyed that tired old stricture,

WHOM

with — which is why it sounds wrong. It should be “Whom did you come with?” And this is even more obvious if you like to avoid terminal prepositions: “With whom did you come?” No one would say “With who did you come?” — or, for that matter, “To Who It May Concern.” In most other instances, it’s become increasingly common to just use who — especially in speech, and sometimes in writing, too. That’s because whom is starting to feel fussy and pretentious — and because well-meaning folks sometimes use it when trying to sound grammatical, even though it winds up wrong. Take this subtler instance: “I have a pri e for whoever co es in first. Sounds like it should be whomever, since the word follows for — right? But actually, the “object of the preposition” is the whole phrase whoever comes in first; and whoever is actually the subject of that phrase. So it’s right! Now you can see why it’s tough keeping this simple; in fact, if I were to fully explain all the rules regarding who, whom and whomever, it would take three or four columns — of which you would li ely read only the first and then quit. And frankly, I wouldn’t blame you. My best suggestion is to use whom only

when you’re sure it’s correct. Most of us can’t think through so much grammar while talking — so it’s perhaps best avoided in conversation. (And let’s face it, your listener isn’t gonna care anyway.) In writing, use whom when you know it’s the object of an action or a preposition — especially when it’s right next to a preposition (“With whom,” “To whom,” etc.); and don’t ever use it as the subject just because you want to sound smart. We all know how that usually turns out. Now on a final note Long ago virtually every English noun in had two cases, as with she and her. Li e any other grammar nuances, the objective version faded with time, leaving us only cased pronouns — so perhaps those will die out too! Of course, super common words like he and him tend to resist change; but as indicated by my own advice here (and by several grammar guides), whom is slowly disappearing. That may also be the case with an even tricker distinction: lay, lie, laid, lying, laying, etc. I might tackle that mess next time — unless I get a lot of hive-based hatemail after all this grammar!

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

Shoes

W

e are still in the last throes of summer, and we all know how hot September can get, so like it or not, we are still in sandal season, even as I long for the boots and loafers of autu n. By this ti e of the year your ipops and strappy sandals have probably seen better days. If your shoe wardrobe needs a refresh, here are a few styles and trends to consider to see you through the last days of summer. First up ip- ops. They are ubi uitous

during summer and can take a beating. In my 20s, I’d buy a couple of pairs, like ld Navy s uare Toe Flip-Flop andals, and just wear Bernadette them until they Ulsamer fell apart. Now my middle-aged feet (and lower back) need more support, so I’m looking to Archies’ Arch Support Flip Flops in a bright hue like coral or

royal blue and wear them more intentionally. There s always been debate about when and where it is appropriate to trot around in ip- ops and I d offer al ost anywhere if you have a uality pair and style them with intention. Next up: the athletic sandal. I prefer this type of strappy sandal versus a heeled version, as they can be just as stylish, but way more durable and comfortable in the summer. Right now, many of these sandals are on sale as we come to the end of the season, so grab a pair (or two) to wear now and then bust the out again next year. I eyeing Teva’s Women’s Hydratrek Water Sandal in Tigerlily. I can easily visuali e wear-

ing the with cutoffs and a tan for a creek day, as well as Bermuda shorts and a sleeveless blouse for First Fridays-type events. For a more minimalist take, there’s Skechers’ Go Walk Glide-Step andal in blac and white or taupe. This “hands-free” shoe makes it easy to slip on and go and pairs with a linen dress for an evening out, or drawstring pants and a tunic for church or errands. If you’re looking to elevate your summer sandal game, then consider espadrille-inspired wedges. Lands End’s Women’s Espadrille Wedge Sandals in cognac, in particular, will add low-key Se e SHOES o n Pa g e 3 4

polish to a last-days-of-summer dress or a linen matching set. Meanwhile, Eileen Fisher’s Willow Tumbled Leather Wedge Espadrille in black will add a bit of edge to a pair of boho pull-on pants and a cropped boxy tee-shirt. Either way, a wedge will literally lift up any look. Another option to add some height to your look, but on a subtle scale, is kitten heel sandals. Loft’s Versa Asymmetrical Leather Kitten Heels in white will add the perfect punch to an all-black look for the o ce or balance out a brightly oral froc for an evening out. If you re looking to add more color to your summer style, then check out Aerosoles Comfortable Women’s Heeled Sandal in either magenta or kiwi. To ease your footwear into autumn while maintaining warm-weather awareness, perhaps a closed-toe option li e uince s Italian Leather Slingback Flat with a square toe for a “mullet” type show. Lastly, an oldie but a resurgent goody:

jelly sandals. Although “jellies” may have pea ed in the s they ve been making a continuous strong comeback for the last couple of years. Every ti e I out and about with y other whenever she sees the out in the wild like Gap Factory’s Jelly Ballet Flat that we encountered during a recent backto-school shopping trip, she reminds me of the su er of 1 . Either way, the pressure is on to update your late summer pedicure with jellies. There’s nowhere for your foot to hide. s I entioned a lot of these shoe styles are on sale at the end of summer. And while you may think jellies are trendy, in fact, as their staying power proves they are part of the classic shoe styles li e wedges and ip- ops so you are safe to buy now and wear next summer and still be stylish.

BOOKWORM Shannon Gibney, illustrations by Hyy Voun Lee (University of Minnesota Press, $18.95) is a good choice. Salome had a sister. She just didn’t know her because, while Mama’s tummy grew bigger and bigger, Mama came home from the hospital with empty arms. The whole family was quiet, and “Salome didn’t like it.” She didn’t like that Mama cried in the bathroom, either. Everybody gave alo e a different answer when she as ed where her sister was but the final answer was a comfort. This is a wrenching book that’s meant for 5-to-8-yearolds, but also for grieving parents who

need to read it. All good things must come to an end. That’s a hard lesson to learn, especially if you’re a kid, and “Lucky & Norman” by Susan Cain & Three Generations of the Cain Family, pictures by Stella Lim (Rocky Pond, $19.99) shows children that “goodbye” is natural, even when it really hurts. Sam and Eli were very happy: the farm vacation their family was on included ani als don eys specifically and the boys were very excited to make friends with the animals, although Lucky and Norman weren’t quite as eager, and that

was sad. One day, though, Sam and Eli won the donkeys over. It started out slow — just a few pets — and the donkeys began to trust the boys. That was the day when they all started having lots of fun playing together! But vacations end, and so do friendships. Sam and Eli’s family had to go home for the summer, and the boys had to say goodbye to their furry playmates. How can a 5-to-8-year-old ever learn to leave a friend without breaking their heart arents will want to find out too. Along the same lines, but for slightly smaller children, “Goodbye, Koi” by Jack Wong (Orchard Books, $19.99) is a great farewell for the younger set.

The family’s packed. There are boxes everywhere, and a small boy must leave his oi fish behind as the fa ily e bar s on a new chapter in their lives. What will his fish thin of the ove to another aquarium? Will they get along with other fish This is a gentle bittersweet boo for kids ages 3-to-5, especially if they must relinquish a pet. If these books are not quite right for your little one or if they don t exactly fit the situation, then head to your favorite boo store or library and as the staff there for help. They ll be able to find just what you need to read to your child, to explain, to prepare, or to comfort. They’ll help any kid start to feel better.

he concept of sister cities originated in the mid-twentieth century as a method to foster global peace and mutual understanding by linking communities across national borders. Originally established to encourage citizen diplomacy, these relationships have evolved into strategic partnerships that promote economic development, cultural sharing, and technical collaboration. Municipalities utilize these alliances to interact directly with foreign counterparts, bypassing national governments to address local issues such as urban planning, public education, and municipal trade. What began as a peace movement became a practical tool for economic transformation. Williamsport became sister cities with Ma’ale Adumim on December 16, 2010. The relationship remains on formal diplomatic registries, functioning primarily as a symbolic partnership with little to no active grassroots participation, public funding, or ongoing community events. This lack of engagement is not a failure. It is an opportunity. The dormant designation suggests that Williamsport has the capacity to develop new, intentional pairings that align more closely with its modern economic, educational, and cultural identity.

To establish a successful partnership, Williamsport could target international cities that share its specific structural and industrial heritage. Each potential pairing offers distinct strategic value. Marilia, Brazil, serves as a naturally prominent cultural match due to its dominant position in global baseball. Major League Baseball officials describe Marilia explicitly as “the baseball capital of Brazil.” The city features a dominant adult baseball program, the Marilia Baseball Team, which won its fourth consecutive Brazilian Adult Baseball Championship in 2024. The local youth pipeline operates heavily out of the Nikkey Marilia club, a prominent center for the sport tied to Brazil’s Japanese descendant community. This cultural alignment with Williamsport’s status as the birthplace of Little League Baseball and host of its annual World Series creates an obvious foundation for partnership. Marilia’s connection extends beyond symbolism. A sister city network can facilitate international winter training camps, youth exhibition tournaments, and global coaching or umpiring clinics held during spring or autumn months. These shoulder season events would bring international visitors to Lycoming County outside of the busy late August window, extending the tourism revenue generated during the two weeks of the Little League World Series into year-round athletic and cultural

fy Williamsport’s industrial base, opening new avenues for trade in manufacturing and technology. The value flows both directions. Williamsport possesses exceptional institutional knowledge in sports tourism infrastructure and technical vocational education. European and South American municipalities facing their own economic transitions could learn from how Williamsport has positioned itself as a destination. The exchange becomes mutual rather than extractive. International partners gain insights into American grassroots sports development and regional technical education systems while Williamsport gains practical models for industrial transformation and economic diversification. Sister city partnerships function best when they address real strategic needs rather than existing merely on paper. Williamsport has the infrastructure, the educational institutions, and the cultural assets to support meaningful international engagement. The question is whether the community is willing to reimagine what an active sister city relationship could accomplish. All three candidate pairings are entirely exploratory and conceptual at this stage. No preliminary or formal discussions have occurred. What exists is possibility and the recognition that intentional international partnerships could accelerate Williamsport’s economic and cultural development in directions that serve the entire region.

activity. For municipalities seeking industrial transformation models, two European cities offer valuable lessons. Umeå, Sweden, successfully transitioned from traditional wood and pulp manufacturing into a hub for sustainable bioeconomy and clean technology. The city features specialized initiatives like the North Sweden Cleantech platform and close research integration with Umeå University, transforming its industrial base into green construction materials and regional clean technology leadership. Gelsenkirchen, Germany, located in the post-industrial Ruhr Valley, utilized structural initiatives like the Emscher Landscape Park redevelopment and the Science Park Gelsenkirchen, transforming a former coal mining and steel casting footprint into a localized cluster for solar energy research, hydrogen technology development, and advanced automated robotics. These international partnerships would address specific needs within the Lycoming County region. Local institutions of higher education, such as the Pennsylvania College of Technology and Lycoming College, could establish direct student exchange pipelines and international training programs in specialized technical fields. Faculty collaboration on manufacturing innovation and resource management could bring expertise directly to classrooms. Connecting local businesses with foreign markets would help diversi-

recently watched a video wherein the presenter was relating his opinion that planting food plots for wildlife was not really a good idea. I am, however, a strong proponent of doing just that — taking the time, energy, and money to invest in establishing food plots that not only benefit deer and turkeys, but any wildlife that frequents your property. What struck me most about the video was not the presenter’s dislike of food plots, but that it was a great example of how we, as humans, sometimes offer thoughts and ideas that are at odds with one another instead of focusing on working together toward our common goals. These days we are constantly ooded with divisiveness and conscious or subconscious attempts to pit one group against another. There are Republicans, and then there are Democrats. Some folks are Liberals, and so e are Conservatives. There are different racial groups defined by the color of their skin — not by their character. There are numerous religions, each holding strongly to their specific beliefs. The list goes on and on. Each of these groups has their own subtle - and so eti es not-too-subtle differences in their philosophies and approach to things. And today, there is the constant belief that if you don’t completely agree with MY opinion, then you are somehow a bad person for believing what you do. You are

not part of the solution; you are the problem! Most often, these feelings and strongly held opinions are deeply rooted in politics. Unfortunately, this same divisiveness can sometimes spill over into the outdoor sports of hunting and fishing that we all en oy. Now here co es y point. There are y fisher en bait fisher en spinning tac le fisher en so e who only li e to fish s all mountain streams for trout, some who prefer fishing rivers and la es those who only fish the ocean and so e who will only fish out of a boat, while others prefer to wade a strea or fish fro the ban . hen it co es to hunting, the variety continues, from the species individuals prefer to hunt and the equipment and methods used. Realizing there are differences we ust also be aware — and focus on — the fact that we sportsmen share common interests, philosophies, and goals. We, as sportsmen — particularly those who are hunters and fisher en have done the lion’s share of work to enhance conservation and preservation of fish and wildlife over the decades. The work that has been accomplished, and continues to be done, through organizations such as Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (and the list goes on and on) is the reason we all can enjoy the fish and wildlife that we have today. Wild turkeys have been brought back from

walnut tree caught my attention this spring, and I found myself doing a painting of a male and female. couple of years ago the goldfinches perched in the goldenrods out back led to a painting I appropriately titled “Gold on Gold”. Of course, there are a lot of other birds that show up, and I enjoy seeing them as well. Cardinals, Blue Jays, Robins, Sparrows, Red-breasted Grosbeaks, Doves, Cedar Waxwings, and Eastern Bluebirds, just to name a few. Identifying the more common birds usually isn’t a problem, but I find the National udubon ociety s Field Guide to North American Birds is a great help, especially when I want additional information.

ongratulations to ALL of the teams who made it to the 2026 Little League World Series. Kudos to you and your families. This is the best time of year as our lovely landscape provides the backdrop for an incredible sporting showcase. So, on behalf of those who permanently reside — WELCOME TO WILLIAMSPORT. I look forward to seeing the many faces. I sincerely hope you enjoy your stay. Lycoming County has so much to offer. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any help finding a few things to do while you are in town. My son and I are always up for a fishing adventure.

I am a huge advocate of Little League Baseball. I am a proud graduate of the program. My experiences taught me a great deal. Many of us dreamed of playing in Williamsport. Very few get the opportunity. I played my ball at Boulder- Arrowhead in Billings, Montana. My family moved to PA after our season. We had a great squad, and we were nipped in the State Tournament. My alma mater still has a solid reputation. They have been so close. One of our rivals is in the Mountain Championship. I am hoping that Big Sky Little League will punch their ticket this weekend. My All-Star jacket is still in the closet. Jensen and several others are so lucky. He

has played in both stadiums. Little League reaches out to the local teams to play during their umpire schools and evaluations. My son swung for the Volunteer fences when Hepburn Lycoming won the 2021 District Championship. I was super jealous. Take tons of pictures. Jamie Jensen and his mates stole Spencer the hearts of many. They made it all the way to the State Semis. We will never forget that historic run. I still get goosebumps when we look at the scrapbooks. The posts show up on our Facebook memories. Being so close has only sparked our interest. Jensen and I still watch the regional tournaments. My father-in-law, Mike Coledo, also loves this time of year. He has already reserved his seats for the downtown parade. I am not kidding. Those are his chairs on the corner of 4th and Elmira. I will have to do some research, but Mike has been heading to the games for many decades. His two grandsons are growing up. I don’t know if they will tag along. The boys always made out like bandits. Pappy always picked up the hefty tab in the souvenir tent. Jensen has an impressive collection of hats and jerseys. Mike has made many friendships. The same families come to Williamsport every year. Mike does a great job welcoming the world. Yes. I sometimes chime in with a different perspective. USABAT, MLB CLASSIC, BRONZE STATUES, and the DISGRUNTLED LOTTERY. I sell free papers. My

friends from South Side know that I am a huge fan. These next few weeks put our area on the global stage. It is a big deal. Huge. You have no idea how many folks tune into the games. I always marvel at these reactions. WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Williamsport, PA. IS THAT NEAR PHILADELPHIA? No. North Central PA. It is the home of Little League Baseball. OH I WATCH IT EVERY YEAR. THAT IS ON OUR BUCKET LIST. YOU ACTUALLY LIVE THERE? Please enjoy the 2026 Little League World Series. I encourage my fellow residents to be extra courteous and warm. Lycoming County is a beautiful and special place for many reasons. Little League Baseball is on our pedestal, and they should be applauded. Let’s show the world what we are all about. Play ball.
