he greatest event in youth sports will be on our cover and featured within our pages for the next two weeks. I am sure most of my readers know Little League baseball and softball are also the largest youth sports programs in the world. It’s hard for me to even get my mind around that this will be the 79th playing of the Little League World Series. So why am I talking about it this week? Because I would like to focus on providing the best Little League World Series experience for everyone attending the event. From its founding and growth to being the most televised youth sports event, one thing has been a constant: the great people of the Williamsport area who put on the show. Whether it be in actually volunteering or working for Little League baseball or providing hospitality to those here for the event, our area has done itself proud. For example, being a Little League Uncle during the World Series also has to be the most wanted job in youth sports. And they all have gone above and beyond for their teams over the years. As have all the everyday residents that put on a smile, make their property look the best it can, and provide that special kindness found in our area. Then there
are the businesses and restaurants in Williamsport and South Williamsport that make those visiting feel like they actually live here. Tip of my cap to the Mountaineer Lounge and Franco’s, who always seemed to be talked about by our Little League guests. Now for the reasons why I’m writing the column this week and talking about problems being faced not only in our communities but around our Nation. I encourage everyone to keep their eyes, ears, and common sense wide open. The Little League World Series and all the events that surround the celebration, beginning with the Grand Slam Parade, make an obvious target for bad actors. It could be anything from the youth takeovers and delinquent behavior to actual gang activity, or something much worse. Please, if you see, hear, or catch a tip by whatever means, notify law enforcement immediately. Please do not ignore the obvious to protect those willing to break the law or much worse. I have great faith in all those who do everything possible to keep the event safe for everyone. But I also understand in today’s world security and law enforcement need our help. And somebody usually knows something before someone tests the security, law enforcement, and surveillance provided.
My next message is for parents of someone who is going sideways for whatever reason. And being a parent doesn’t end when the child turns 18. Please don’t turn a blind eye to things you know are Jim wrong or that could hurt Webb Jr. others and impact your child’s life forever. If you can’t discuss them with your child, and I don’t mean by accepting whatever they say even though it makes no sense, you must notify someone. It may be something that can be dealt with and xed without becoming a problem. I understand the lack of parenting in today’s world, either by just being absent or by allowing a juvenile or young adult just to do whatever they want. Often the burdens of bad behavior are put on grandparents or guardians because of the lack of a parental presence. I also see grandparents who allowed their children to become criminals now raising their children’s children. And the cycle then repeats itself. Because of the complexity created by everything I’ve mentioned, again — you must keep your eyes, ears, and common sense wide open. There is always a backstory, there is always a reason why, there is always an excuse; we must stop accepting bad behavior, and that begins with those closest to the situation.
Whether it be during the Little League World Series or just another day in your neighborhood. When things reach police involvement, there is no more di cult ob than being in law enforcement in today’s world. In our local area, with young people being the victims of violence and dying in the streets at the hands of other young people, we need to support the police. I have seen way too many situations recently when law enforcement o cers who are just doing their job and trying to protect the innocent being painted as the enemy within a small group within the community. This only sends the wrong message and does nothing to address the real problem. I have witnessed law enforcement at every level be involved in positive community policing and neighborhood involvement. Some departments have ust nished up with their National Night Out events to open their doors to those they serve. We need more police o cers on the street making a difference, not looking over their shoulder waiting for the next accusation against them to be aired publicly. We also need young people interested in law enforcement to be encouraged to make a difference, not questioned on why they want to do that. I’d better stop there. Let’s all be safe out there and look out for one another. God Bless America.

which can make for a stressful shopping experience for all involved. Shopping early helps families avoid that outcome. I know this is hit or miss depending on the district and age. Some provide most of what kids will need, and some encourage waiting until after open houses so that teachers can provide a list. But picking up the basics early can help you get ahead. Plus, who doesn’t like buying school supplies? Speaking of supplies, there are also opportunities to help those that may not have access to everything they need for a successful school year. Even though it is not Christmas, the folk at The Salvation Army are keeping busy! They are starting their school supply drive. Though they had an o cial collection day last week, I’m sure that they would still welcome donations for the upcoming school year. You check out the pic with my story to see what they need. Primary drop-off location is the Salvation Army, 457 Market St., Williamsport. You can drop off donations Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 pm.

Sky High Soaring Society Model Aviation Event August 13 to 16 In Muncy Hills Area

NOW IS THE TIME TO FREEZE CORN!
n area of the Muncy Hills will be filled with the sights and sounds of giant-scale model airplanes the weekend of August 13 to 16. The Sky High Soaring Society is presenting this aeronautical event. It is part of their annual summer meet. Giant-scale model sailplanes and giant-scale powered airplanes will be taking part in this meet. Their annual summer meet is on the grounds of High Acre Farm in Anthony Township. Spectators are very welcome, and local families often enjoy setting up chairs or blankets and enjoying a picnic while viewing the flying activity. The term “giant scale” refers to the fact that many of these remote-controlled “models” that will be flown are between one quarter and one half the size of the full-scale aircraft after which they are modeled. They’re huge! The busiest days of the four event days for visitors to view the flying action will likely be Saturday the
15th and Friday the 14th respectively. Of course, all flying activity will be weather dependent. The Sky High Soaring Society flying site, situated on High Acre Farm, has a long history of model aviation activity in the region. Current landowner Mark Eisele is both an active member of the club and maintains the flying field and its runway as part of the much larger 300+ acre farm on land originally purchased by Lee and Kathryn Eisele in 1979. All sorts of model flying has been pretty much consistent through the years, including a time in the past when the local group Susquehanna Valley RC included it among several other places. The Sky High Soaring Society has been flying from the field for a bit more than a decade and is responsible for all activity on the site. Interestingly, the High Acre farmhouse once also housed a model shop in the basement run by Lee Eisele where local flyers could purchase kits or parts for their airplanes. “We owe a huge debt of thanks to the

tics, and its flying site enjoys the special designation as a Federal Aviation Administration-Recognized Identification Area (FIRA). The FAA has granted a special authorization for the summer 2026 event to permit the sailplanes to fly much higher than usual, up to 2,000 feet of altitude. In addition to this August event, the club’s annual “Warbirds and Classics Weekend” is set for October 3-4, 2026. “The Warbirds and Classics Weekend” has become a must-attend event for enthusiasts of model aviation and all lovers of military and golden age aircraft! Like the sailplane events, there will be many giant-scale warbird models flying, including fighters, bombers, jets, and much more. For anyone interested in joining the Sky High Club, annual memberships are $100, with 100 percent of all funds dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the flying site. Donations are also welcome. Club members can fly safely anytime. You can learn more about the club and see many photographs from past flying events at their website SkyHighSoaring.org. To get to this event, take Muncy Exchange Road to County Line Road to High Acre Lane. Please drive slowly past the white house on High Acre Lane.

Eisele family for keeping the tradition of model flying alive and well at High Acre while we take our responsibilities as stewards very seriously. This is one of the premier model flying sites in Pennsylvania and one of only a very small handful of sites in the entire Eastern half of the United States that hosts giant scale RC soaring and aerotow,” Steve Pasierb, club president, told Webb Weekly. “It’s a treasure that our members and the many spectators who come to take a look deeply appreciate. Pasierb added, “We encourage any visitors from beyond the immediate area to add a visit to the Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven to their trip and gain an even fuller appreciation of the great tradition and history of aviation in the Central PA region.” A little about the Sky High Soaring Society: it is a remote-controlled (RC) model flying club that hosts four major, multi-day flying events — May, August, and October — that are open to all visitors and spectators. The club’s members fly all sorts of model aircraft, with a particular focus on giant-scale sailplanes, or gliders, and the tow-planes that carry them to altitude. Especially important in the busy commercial airspace over the Williamsport region, Sky High is a sanctioned club by the Academy of Model Aeronau-

group of citizens residing in the Vallamont section appeared this morning before a special session of City Council to register complaints against alleged health and safety hazards resulting from the periodic flooding of Grafius Run. Spokesman for the group was Patrick H. Fierro. He presented a petition signed by the residents of the 12th and 14th Wards seeking for correction of the situation. The menace to children from both drowning during a high-water event and the health menace arising from garbage dumped in the run, was placed foremost by the group to the council.

Another conference with the same group at which City Councilman Raymond R. Rall and City Engineer, Lyons Mussina will present approximate figures for the cost of enclosing the run was set for September 15 at 10:30 a.m. It was pointed out that a dry-wall constructed along the run by the Works Progress Administration more than 10 years ago had since collapsed along some sections, raising the level of the run bed resulting in more frequent flooding during rainy periods. Councilman Rall told the group that a large conduit had been planned to carry the section of water between Harvard Avenue and Louisa Street but that the cost of construction has removed the project from the immediate list.

ocal landmark Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field marks its 100th anniversary this year. The park originally opened on April 22, 1926, back when it was known as Municipal Athletic Field. Construction cost $75,000 at the time — equivalent to roughly $1.36 to $1.42 million today. Its rst game was an exhibition game between the Williamsport Grays and Bucknell University. The eld also played host to other events ranging from boxing and wrestling to football and Negro League teams like the Harrisburg Giants. Today the park serves as the home of the MLB Draft League team the Williamsport Crosscutters and host of the Annual MLB Little League Classic. On July 28th, the Ballpark hosted its Bowman Field Founder’s Night. Sponsored by Jack McKernan and Williamsport Moving Co., the park celebrated its founders. In past issues of the Webb Weekly, Jack McKernan had put out an ad seeking family members of the park’s initial founders. The recognized founders included N.B. Bubb, J.W. Bowman, S.V. Brown, E.H. As descendants of C.W. Sones, we both attended the game and took part in the pre-game ceremonies. Along with descendants of the other founders, we were all invited onto the eld in recognition of those who established a legacy that endures today. The last time I had been at the stadium was when the team was still the Williamsport Cubs — how time ies! The Cutters played the West Virginia Black Bears with 1,011 visitors packing the stadium. Both teams played hard and had pitchers throwing balls at 90 mph. In the 2nd inning, Jack Kail singled and stole 2nd. In the 3rd, Nick Romano reached base safely, with James McCoy hitting a two-run home run on a line drive to left-center eld, putting Cutters

up by 3. In the 6th inning, the Bears’ Noah Jouras walked with Kevin Jones and Ben Barrett hitting back-to-back singles, loading the bases. Ian Collier hit a two-run double to Cutters left elder Chris Stan eld. The Bears would claw their way back with Ben Barrett scoring, tying Cutters in the top of the 6th. In the top of the 8th, Bears’ Cole Kitchen grounded into a double play with second baseman Jack Kail to shortstop Sam DeCarlo to rst baseman Jake Zitella, Ian Collier out at 2nd, and Cole Kitchens out at 1st, making for 3 outs. In the 8th inning, the Cutters cut the Bears’ lead with Chris Stan eld and Jake itella scoring two more runs. Cutters carved out the win with a nal score of 5-3. Not even the storm clouds that loomed large could diminish the enthusiasm of fans or the beauty of the stadium lit up at night. Today Bowman Field stands proudly as
the 9th oldest active professional baseball stadium and the 2nd-oldest minor league ballpark in the US. It’s a legacy that everyone is a part of. From the ground crew that works to prepare the stadium and eld, the ushers directing fans to their seats, ticket o ce staff, security, and countless other employees, and the fans themselves. Of course, who could forget Boomer and the O cial Director of Smiles Rashan West-Bey, who greets fans and sings Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the 7th-inning stretch. I would like to extend a thank you to Jack McKernan for sponsoring Founder s Night and to Vice President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi and all the Cutters staff for putting together such a memorable night. “When Memory Fades: What to Expect at Every Stage, from Early Signs to Full Support for Alzheimer’s and Dementia” by Nathaniel Chin, MD c.2026, St. Martin’s Essentials $30.00 422 pages

om called you in a panic the other day. She’d lost her keys and by the time you arrived to help, she’d
found them. In the refrigerator.
These kinds of things keep happening, not often but often enough, and you don’t know quite what to worry about. But in the new book “When Memory Fades” by Nathaniel Chin, MD, you’ll learn about the journey ahead, for both of you. You can’t remember why you walked into a room. You got lost last week, going to the bank. Popular wisdom says that things like that are normal as we age, but Chin says that’s not true — although the answer may not be a worstcase scenario, either. Yes, memory problems could just be signs of stress, dehydration, or lack of sleep — or is it time to see a doctor? Chin says maybe, yes. He was working his way through medical

Multiple retirement priorities. Multiple years of predictable growth to help address them. Earn
residency when his father, a geriatrician in Madison, Wisconsin, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Chin, now a geriatrician, was blindsided, but that diagnosis also changed his life. Here, he writes about the brain, and how Alzheimer’s and dementia are diagnosed, explaining that dementia has many faces and, depending on a doctor’s evaluation, memory problems might be slowed or improved. He shares his father’s illness with readers, but he also writes about his mother, a steadfast, steady caretaker. Her story reminds reader-guardians to care for themselves, too. Know how to talk the talk, so that you can have “a more productive” conversation with your doctor. Understand that there’s nothing “normal” about dementia or Alzheimer’s. Know the statistics — African Americans are affected with dementia twice as much as whites — and know how to lower your risks. Learn here what questions to ask, how to break the news to everyone, and any legal matters that will be important soon. And know how to tend to you. Says Chin, “The best action you can take is to educate yourself… The more you understand, the better equipped you are to make sound judgments.” Something s off about Dad, ust a lot of little things that don’t add up. When is it time to step in? “When Memory Fades” can help you decide. Wise, wide-spread, comprehensive, and compassionately helpful, this is a book you can read and then take it to the doctor with your loved one. It’s a book that makes sense when nothing else does, and its biggest

feature is that it smoothly transitions from easy-to-grasp science and charts, to gentle coaching for caregivers. Author Nathaniel Chin, MD writes with storytelling, humility, grace, and experience from both sides of the Alzheimer’s/dementia issue, and his words are reassuring but also urgent. Learn, but don’t wait, he says. Know how to safeguard yourself. See your doctor, and don’t fear testing. Watch for signs of depression. And never, ever stop asking for help. Read those last seven words, and nd When Memory Fades” now. It’s a book to have on your shelf, whether you’re 45 or 95 because, as you’ll see, dementia happens and knowledge is key.

miling and saying hello may seem like such a simple thing. I’m guessing most of us do it when we see family or close friends. But what about the person we don’t know? The cashier at the grocery store. The person walking toward us on the sidewalk. The coworker we pass in the hallway every morning. The waiter taking our order. We never really know what someone else is carrying. They may be having the best day of their life. Or they may be having the hardest.
Pat McAfee always says, “Be a friend and tell a friend something nice. It may change their life.” I’ve always liked that quote. It made me think about how often we’re walking through life with our heads down, staring at our phones or rushing to the next thing on our schedule. Someone walks by, and it would be so easy to pretend we never saw them. But what if we all chose to do the harder thing? Smile. Say hello. Ask, “How are you?” Maybe they smile back and simply say, “I’m good.” Maybe they nod and keep walking. Or maybe they stop for a min-

ute and actually tell you how they’re doing. And when they ask you the same question, maybe instead of giving the automatic, “Good,” we actually have a real conversation. It doesn’t have to be long. It just has to be Jimmy Webb III genuine. I think one of the greatest needs people have today is simply to feel seen. Not ignored. And while you’re having that conversation, treat everyone with respect. It shouldn’t matter who you’re talking to. The famous Lou Holtz once said, “Treat everybody the same. Talk to the janitor the same way you talk to the CEO.” I love that. Respect shouldn’t change based on someone’s title, job, or position. Pat McAfee has another saying that I think goes right along with it, “The world needs more good people.” Everyone deserves kindness. Sometimes I get in my head and need some kindness too. I was reminded of that the other day. I was walking into a restaurant feeling overwhelmed. My mind was racing, I was stressed out, and all I could think about was everything I still had to do that
day. As I walked in, the hostess smiled and simply said, “I like your shoes.” That was it. It made me smile. It pulled me out of my own head for a moment. Then I started thinking... What if she had been rude? What if she had ignored me completely? It probably would have added to an already stressful day. Instead, she made it better. Sometimes all it takes is a smile. A compliment. A kind word. You may never know how much it means to the other person. So here’s my challenge this week. Be the light for someone else. Smile. Say hello. Give a compliment. Treat everyone with respect. Because being kind doesn’t cost a thing. I actually have one more challenge for you this week. Reach out to someone you love or a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Pick up the phone. Call them. Ask them how they’re doing. I think a lot of us have that thought, but then life gets busy. We tell ourselves we’ll do it later, or we think, “That might be kind of weird.” Do it anyway. I have a feeling they’ll be glad you called. And I have a feeling you’ll be glad you did too. “Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:11

County Hall Corner: Operation Ordinance By Blair Steward
A
1.5 million square foot data center proposal looms near Allenwood. This is not theoretical anymore. This is corporate machinery arriving at Lycoming County’s doorstep with blueprints and lawyers and the kind of capital that overwhelms communities unprepared to say no. The Lycoming County Commissioners gathered, understanding that the window to shape what happens next is closing fast. Pennsylvania law prohibits municipalities from outright denying any business. This

constraint means townships cannot simply reject a data center proposal. What they can do is regulate it ferociously. They can demand conditions. They can require infrastructure upgrades. They can establish setbacks and environmental protections and operational standards that make development expensive and complicated. But only if those ordinances are in place before the proposal arrives. The commissioners and local planning officials emphasized the critical need for local municipalities to take immediate action. This is not a suggestion. This is an urgent directive rooted in the reality of what happens when a

to the board for a formal vote over the next several weeks to stabilize center operations finally. Eighteen candidates are being processed. This is real movement toward solving a crisis that has threatened emergency response across the county. Public Safety Director Rothchild’s update represents the kind of concrete progress that matters in governance. The county is not waiting for the staffing problem to resolve itself. It is actively recruiting. It is moving candidates through interviews. It is preparing to bring ratifications to the board for formal approval. Within weeks, the 911 call center could have the personnel it desperately needs. The meeting unfolded in a solutions-focused atmosphere. The commissioners are not paralyzed by the challenges facing the county. They are building defenses against external development threats while simultaneously solving internal operational crises. They are compiling ordinance frameworks for townships to use. They are recruiting emergency personnel. They are moving with purpose through a moment when purpose matters. What emerges is a portrait of county leadership that understands governance requires simultaneous attention to multiple urgent problems. Development pressure requires regulatory response. Staffing shortages require active recruitment and board action. Smaller municipalities require expert guidance and tools. The commissioners are providing all of these things because they recognize that the county’s future depends on decisions made right now, in this moment, while the window remains open to shape what comes next.

township lacks the regulatory framework to control development on its own terms. The county’s planning commission has been actively compiling a quality ordinance framework to serve as a guide for local leaders. This framework exists because the commissioners recognize that smaller municipalities lack the expertise and resources to draft sophisticated zoning regulations from scratch. The county is handing them the tools they need to protect their own futures. The Allenwood proposal represents exactly the kind of threat that makes this work urgent. A facility of that scale would fundamentally alter the character of the landscape across Pennsylvania’s largest county by land area. It would consume land. It would demand electrical infrastructure. It would reshape what is possible in the region. The commissioners are not arguing against development. They are arguing that development should happen on terms that the communities affected have helped establish. Local control means having ordinances in place before the moment of negotiation arrives. Yet even as the commissioners address the external threat posed by massive data center development, they are fighting to stabilize operations from within. Public Safety Director Forest Rothchild reported that the county has officially initiated interviews with candidates following a recruitment drive. The 911 call center has suffered severe staffing shortages that compromise public safety itself. When too few people answer emergency calls, response times suffer. Training suffers. The people who work those phones suffer from exhaustion and burnout. The administration plans to bring employee ratifications

her? We live for the BER months. From Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, we just love it. And decorations? Well, they make us happy, and it’s so much work! Why do all that work for one month? Put it up, enjoy it! I say, do what makes you happy. For now, I’ll be snuggled in Kenzy’s room watching “The Nightmare Before Christmas”or “Hocus Pocus” with my girl, living viciously through her until I get our house decorated for fall. I’m thinking about the end of August, because why not? Fall is my favorite, and last year I couldn’t get as much out because I was so sick. I’m going to take full advantage of going all out this year. I really gotta start coming up with a plan for Bonnie and Clyde! The time is coming for our happy, friendly skeletons to shine. Happy Augtober to all you fall and Halloween lovers out there. Our time is soon among us! Mauh-ha-ha-ha!

Totally not planned, but we hadn’t had a full day home in weeks, and Kenz was off doing her thing, so I just kept busy. I went to bed that night feeling so accomplished! August 2nd, our girl, late evening, nally got her bedroom all done. It took her two days to get ready. When she gets married someday, she will have one heck of a hope chest. She has two totes of Halloween for her room, plus started a Halloween village last Christmas for gift ideas from her grandparents, uncle, aunt, and us. She told us when the sign on her door was gone, we could come in and see it. I could hardly wait! She decorates so cutely, and I waited patiently to see it. That evening, about dusk, the sign on her door was nally gone, and my husband and I went and knocked on her bedroom door. I could smell the scent of her Bath and Body Works pumpkin wa e candle coming from her room. She opened the door, and Thriller by Michael Jackson was playing in the background. Flashing purple and orange lights were hung around her room. Cut-out spiders and bats were on her ceiling. Her village lay across her dresser, while different ack o’ lanterns lit up her room. The bed had on her Halloween comforter that we got her two years ago (that she even took the initiative to wash all on her own!) and a black wreath that lights up with red eyes was above her bed. It looked and smelled just like Halloween should. It was perfect and just so much to look at. Why would I take that joy away from

Williamsport’s Forgotten Nation By Blair Steward
A
border dispute created a geopolitical vacuum where no law existed. The Pennsylvania government refused to grant land deeds, establish courts, or provide military protection. Yet hundreds of families moved into the territory between Lycoming Creek and Pine Creek, anyway, settling land that belonged to neither the British Crown nor the colonial government. Survival demanded they invent their own system of governance. The Fair Play system emerged from necessity rather than ideology. Every March, the community gathered to elect three commissioners: Bratton Caldwell, John Walker, and James Brandon in 1776. These three men held supreme executive, legislative, and judicial power. They held court outdoors, often sitting on a log, to settle property disputes, enforce oral contracts, and handle criminal accusations. The tribunal operated without jails. Their ultimate punishment for serious crimes or defying a ruling was banishment. The guilty party would be placed in a canoe, rowed across the Susquehanna River to the official Pennsylvania side, and forbidden from
ever returning. This was one of the earliest working examples of a purely democratic, self-governing society in North America. The settlers built the system on a core principle that every citizen must treat their neighbors with absolute fairness. No written laws existed. The Fair Play Men kept minimal to no written records intentionally. This protected them from being criminally prosecuted by the British Crown or the Pennsylvania colony for illegally squatting on Native American treaty lands. The lack of documentation would later mean that their system existed almost entirely in oral tradition and lived experience. The defining moment occurred on July 4, 1776. Entirely unaware that the Continental Congress was meeting in Philadelphia to vote on national independence, the Fair Play Men held their own assembly on the plains near Pine Creek under a massive elm tree. Frustrated by British tyranny and desperate to secure legal rights to the frontier lands they had cleared; the settlers voted to sever ties with Great Britain and drew up their own local declaration of independence. By a strange cosmic coincidence, this happened on the exact same day Thomas

Jefferson’s document was approved in Philadelphia. Two independent acts of rebellion, separated by 150 miles and entirely unknown to each other, occurred simultaneously. The frontier settlers and the Continental Congress both decided on the same day that the British Crown’s authority had ended. What became of that local declaration remains one of the enduring mysteries of the region. Local legend claims the document was locked inside an iron box that required three separate keys to open, then buried near a frontier fortification called Fort Horn. No physical copy has ever been found. Historians note that this absence makes sense. The settlers kept no written records for a reason. Any document declaring independence from Britain would have been evidence of treason. In 1778, British aligned Native American tribes and Loyalist forces launched devastating raids throughout the West Branch Valley. The Fair Play Men and their families completely evacuated the region. Nearly every structure they built, including Fort Horn, was burned to the ground. The community that had governed itself for several years scattered entirely. The elm tree where they had declared independence would remain, a living monument to the brief republic, but
the settlements themselves were gone. The republic officially came to an end in 1784 when the Pennsylvania legislature finally passed an act recognizing Pine Creek as the true treaty line established by the Treaty of Fort Stanwix. The state granted the Fair Play Men legal titles to their homesteads. The independent territory smoothly integrated back into the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The settlers who had invented their own government, established their own courts, and declared their own independence suddenly had both legal protection and the loss of their self-determination. The history blended into local folklore. The Tiadaghton Elm, named after the waterway, that defined the eastern boundary of the republic, stood as a physical reminder of what had existed on those plains. The tree finally died of disease and was removed in the 1970s. The eastern boundary of the Fair Play Territory became the modern boundary line for the city of Williamsport. The twenty-five-mile stretch of the republic occupied what is now western Lycoming County, terminating near the Clinton County line. The history of these specific tracts and families is preserved at the Thomas T. Taber Museum in Williamsport, where the story of early American democracy lives on in local memory.

strategies. We are living in strange times, and we need men who are guided by a strong spiritual and moral compass calibrated by God’s Word and Spirit. Men who are prepared to bring life and light into every situation and circumstance they encounter. Men who don’t wither in the face of criticism or challenge. Men who know who they are and what they’ve been called to do — and they do it with boldness and passion. I describe them as lifegiving men. I am so grateful for the lifegiving men who have profoundly in uenced my life. I’m not sure who I would be if God had not sent them my way. WILD Strategies (WILDS) seeks to raise up lifegiving men. We have spent the past two years developing the WILDS concept and
preparing for launch — and we’re excited to report that the o cial launch will happen in late September when I serve as the keynote speaker for a men’s retreat in western Pennsylvania. supple and acts as a protective barrier. Ideally, you’d moisturize after every time you wash your hands, which I try to do with travel-sized products like The Body Shop’s Shea Hand Balm in my at-home work desk. You can also keep products by the sink for a quick rub after using the restroom. In my everyday makeup pouch when I do leave the house, I have on hand (pun intended) Malin + Goetz’s Vitamin B5 Hand Treatment with bergamot scent, which I also dab a bit behind my ears for a fragrance boost whilst I’m out and about. For any cream, use a massaging motion when applying to boost blood ow to hands and cuticles, which supports nail health even further. Next up, nail les. You may nd that traditional, rough emery boards can be too abrasive for natural nails, causing micro
tears that lead to splits and breakage. That’s where glass or crystal nail les come in, which aren’t as fancy as you may think. Glass les are not shards of glass, but instead they are chemically treated and tempered pieces of glass that feel dense rather than fragile. You can nd glass les well under $10, such as Manucurist.com’s Glass Polisher that can be used to smooth, buff, and shine a natural nail. Or there’s Ulta Beauty’s Glass Nail File & Travel Case for $7 to help keep your nails smooth and bright on the road. Also, unlike emery boards, glass les are non-porous and can be washed and sanitized between uses. Lastly, exfoliating your nails. Glycolic acid is a staple in many skincare routines, and it can also bene t your nails, both ngers and toes. You can apply a glycolic acid toner, like Good Molecules Glycolic Exfoliating
Toner, using a cotton swab, then follow with a dab of cuticle oil. Or there’s Dr. Dana’s Nail Renewal System Set that exfoliates and hydrates nails for a chip-free shine. If you re experiencing brittle nails, peeling, or have post-gel manicure damage, this type of system or a combination of exfoliate and cuticle oil should see results in about a week. Speaking of brittle, if the texture and natural shade of your nails have you concerned from an aesthetic view, you may also want to consider your general health. Brittle nails are an indication you may be suffering from a vitamin D de ciency. Nails with white spots can point to a calcium de ciency. Again, your nails are part of the integumentary system, so taking care of them is not just for vanity’s sake, but also part of overall self-care and wellness.

will trim or remove dead cuticle skin during a treatment, you can maintain cuticles at home with hydrating cuticle oil. Oil keeps the cuticle not only hydrated but exible to withstand everyday wear and tear. I’ve used Sally Hansen’s Vitamin E Nail & Cuticle Oil available at Ulta. I have both the travel pen version and the “stopper” container. There’s also Dr. Dana Nails’ Nourishing Cuticle Oil with a mess-free rollerball applicator to create a strong cuticle barrier function. Oil, while you can apply it on the go, is also best applied at night to give the oil time to absorb. Cuticles aren’t the only thing you need to hydrate. Keeping your hands adequately moisturized throughout the day also bene ts your nails. Using a nourishing and hydrating hand cream helps keep skin

Something To Put Up With: That Pesky “Terminal Preposition” By Joseph W. Smith III
A
mong the many quotes attributed to Winston Churchill, one is his alleged response when criticized for using prepositions at the end of his
sentences: “That,” he supposedly said, “is the type of nonsense up with which I will not put.” The quote is almost certainly apocryphal (that is, of doubtful authenticity). But nonetheless, it still shows the tortured syntax that results when trying to avoid this purported grammar gaffe.

Here at “Weird Words” over the past two weeks, we’ve been chipping away at such “nonsense” — namely, rules forbidding the use of ain’t (two weeks ago) and then most recently, the prejudice against splitting in nitives e.g., to boldly go . So this week continues my grammar crusade by dealing with the age-old stricture against using prepositions to end your sentence with. Like I just did there. A preposition is (usually) a short word like to, for or from — or in the case of Churchill’s quote, up and with. (There are several longer ones — such as through, without and beneath.)

Often involving position, these words indicate the relationship of a noun or pronoun to the rest of the sentence. When I used to teach nuts-and-bolts grammar, we liked to say that this part of speech showed “anything a cat can do to a cloud” (beside, over, into, etc.) — though this hardly covers every single preposition. According to Merriam-Webster, in the 17th and 18th centuries a pair of linguistic curmudgeons decided it was improper to use these “position” words at the end of a sentence. In all likelihood, this was an attempt to align English grammar with Latin — which was then much beloved in scholarly circles. As it happens, Latin is a language in which it’s impossible to use the so-called “terminal preposition.” (As we saw last week, this was also behind the similarly spurious argument against split in nitives: Those can t exist in Latin either or in many other languages, for that matter.) Now, in addition to various online resources, I happen to own at least seven references on writing & grammar — and not even one upholds this rule against the terminal preposition. In fact, the venerable Chicago Manual of Style — still a sort of Bible for professional writers — calls it “an ill-founded superstition.” (For the record, I don’t think I’ve ever heard that noun applied to any other writing issue!) What the guides do point out is how awkward things can get when you try to uphold the rule: Instead of a perfectly natural sentence like “That’s the puddle I stepped in,” you get, “That’s the puddle into which I stepped” — ugh. Or something equally icky: “Is she the person to whom you gave it?” Unless they want to sound like someone in a
Jane Austen book, people just don’t talk that way; and one simple-but-terri c rule I learned in college is: “Try not to write anything you wouldn’t want to say out loud.” Indeed, the attempt to sidestep nal prepositions has lately resulted in a student writing error that is all but impossible to x — I mean, by explaining why it’s wrong. Student writers now know that it sounds quite scholarly to avoid the terminal preposition by using one of those “in which” formulas: “This is the style in which I write.” And so, to help sound more “eddicated,” they start using “in which” when all they really mean is “which”: “That’s the kind of pizza in which we like to eat.” For us teachers, such a sentence feels like getting poked in the ear with a very sharp pencil. (No. 2, of course.) So the rule wreaks havoc — yet folks still complain when it gets outed. On its long page addressing the issue, Merriam-Webster cites several angry letters-to-the-editor — including this somewhat whimsical missive from as recently as 2016: “Why do both editorial and letter writers have to agrantly split the in nitive And lastly, ending a sentence with a preposition is something we can do without!” On a nal note, here is an additional headache that arises when trying to obey this “ill-founded superstition”: You often have to wrestle with who and whom — as in, for example, “Is that the teacher for whom you wrote this?” (Rather than the simpler, “Is that the teacher you wrote it for?” SIGH. I guess we’ll have to tackle the “who/ whom” headache next week. If only that were an ill-founded superstition!

There was also a control subject that had no special sounds played near it. Amazingly enough, the plant that “listened” to the radio grew the most. It’s true — I talk to my plants as if they were children or pets. I tell them how wonderful they look (when they do) or how miserable they look (when, in fact, they don’t look so great . Naturally, I offer my profuse and heartfelt apologies, expressing how incredibly sorry I am because I screwed up, yet again. I think they understand me, to an extent anyway, and hopefully nd it in their hearts to forgive me. Much of the time, I smile at them and use a high-pitched, squeaky voice to address them, because, of course, I do. Doesn’t everyone? I think they enjoy the music I play in the house, too, which is a relief because not everyone likes my playlist. Interestingly, one of my daughters conducted a science experiment in grade school, hypothesizing that houseplants

The Roving Sportsman… Don’t Become a Statistic! By Jon Pries ragically, every year as the hunting season gets underway and the “army” of Pennsylvania hunters hits the woods, unpleasant discoveries are made. As these hunters travel deeper into the woods than normal in pursuit of small or big game, the chances are all too real that they may come across a hiker or camper who has passed away. Frequently, the deceased person was simply not in the best of shape to handle the rigors of their outdoor activity. Such tragedy can easily be avoided by simply taking the time and effort to get in better physical shape. Several general areas of concern need to be addressed as you lay out a plan to become more physically t. Don t let the weather hold you back from getting in shape for the upcoming hunting season. On the upcoming warm and more humid days, take it a bit easier, and increase the intensity of your exercise on the cooler, less humid days ahead. Let s lay out some plans and begin. Shed some unwanted pounds:
There is little doubt that, especially as you age, losing weight is not the easiest thing to do. By setting a realistic goal of shedding just a couple of pounds per week, then adjusting your eating habits slightly, you will (hopefully) set yourself on a path to success. Reducing sugar intake will play a major part in any weight loss endeavor. There are plenty of weight loss programs out there, but in reality, one simply needs to muster up the willpower to avoid overeating and to undertake a much-needed exercise program. Cardiovascular fitness: It is critical to be able to comfortably and safely hike the hills and trails, especially if you have not been doing so before the hunting seasons. There is no better time than now to begin getting into shape, so start today by going for a walk. Once it feels comfortable to do so, lengthen the distance and pick up the pace, and look for a route that has some hills to climb and descend. Take your dog for a walk, especially if he is a dog that you hunt with — he will need to get in shape also. Having

Simply put, if you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. If you don t, you won t! Pay closer attention to how many calories are in the foods you eat, and start making smart choices about substitutions so your caloric intake comes from a better source of nutrition. You do not need to sub ect yourself to some crazy crash dieting. By paying closer attention and making steady ad ustments to your food intake, you will develop long-term habits that will serve you well over the long haul. Set a goal: In the end, the goal is to become a better hunter and healthier outdoorsman. One way to accomplish that is to shed some unwanted pounds. You will be able to move more quietly and e ciently through the woods, and you won t leave so much scent because you are breathing so heavily. Combine weight reduction with better eating habits and you will feel better and will no doubt have many more years to hunt, sh, and spend time recreating in the outdoors. Procrastination is soooo easy! Make a plan to get started today to become a more t outdoorsman, and your reward will be a renewed ability to enjoy the wonders that Mother Nature has to offer.

the dog by your side actually will help take your mind off the fact that you are exercising. While walking and running are perhaps the best exercises for cardiovascular tness, it is highly bene cial to include biking or swimming when possible. The nearby rails-to-trails path that runs through the Pine Creek valley is an excellent place to bike. The various cardiovascular workouts will focus on your larger muscles, such as your leg muscles, expand your lung capacity, and raise your heart rate throughout the activity. Muscular fitness: While a weight training bench with dumbbells and barbells is bene cial, it is not a necessity. There are plenty of exercises that you can do for strength and balance that do not require external equipment. Pushups, pull-ups, and sit-ups, along with squats and lunges, are all exercises that will increase strength, improve muscular tness, and help develop better balance. If you do have access to a gym with machines or free weights, then include leg presses, toe raises, bench presses, biceps curls, and triceps extensions — these will all strengthen the muscles you will tend to use in hunting. Proper nutrition:

to reproduce multiple times, hopefully increasing our native population. I have never been an advocate of harvesting native brook trout. Yes, I sh for them, but I do not harvest them. I prefer shing lures and techniques that allow for easy and careful release to ensure their survival. For that reason, I do not suggest bait shing since trout often swallow bait, making it more di cult to release them without harm. I think it was a good move on the part of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and I look forward to seeing more and more of those bigger native brook trout showing up in our mountain streams.

with the new regulation. Most of the commission-raised browns, rainbows, and brook trout are already well over the nine-inch limit when they are stocked, often in the lower teens, so that the nine-inch limit will have little or no effect on those trout. In addition to being harvested, our native brook trout also face mounting pressure from warming waters and habitat loss. With the increased size limit, biologists estimate that more than 99 percent of our wild brook trout will be protected from harvest. That change will allow many more sh to survive long enough

they had one room for Thursday night. Getting hopeful, I asked about Friday. “Yes,” she said, “but you’ll have to change rooms.” She then provided us a late checkout so we could stay before the other room was ready. Somewhat amazing, same hotel, same front desk; one individual performing like an angel, the other, not so much. Other than the outcomes of the games, the Pirates lost both, including the bullpen blowing the team’s 20th save of the season, we enjoyed a good time. Newport was hopping. Activities along the banks of the Ohio River were lled with tourists, and some of those 30,000 convention goers we encountered were enjoyable to talk to. Inside the ballpark, the seats were good and the folks friendly, even though we were decked out in Pirates gear. One young lady at the ticket o ce asked where we were from. Explaining Williamsport, she was excited. I love that place,” she said. Turns out she is from Columbus, Ohio, and went to Lock Haven University to play eld hockey. Jean constantly says, “We’ve got to go places while we can.” Accepting her wisdom, we had a good time, even if it didn’t start good. We’re going to Pittsburgh this weekend for the Pirates/ Red Sox series. I ve got a paper that says we have hotel reservations!

but only for Wednesday night, not the other two nights of our planned stay. She then gave us a listing of other hotels in the area for us to try. With 30,000 incoming folks, that search proved futile. One hotel had a few rooms with an asking price of $620 a night; the other hotels on the list had nothing to offer. With the situation at hand, an economic reckoning was reached. Our tickets to two Pirates/Reds games cost $180. Two nights in the only hotel in town would cost us $1,200 to see those games. Conclusion: we bed down for the night, take full advantage of the hotel’s complimentary breakfast in the morning, and head back home. Decision reached, we got some grub and turned on the hotel TV to wind down. Alas, we couldn’t get a thing on the TV. Once again, confronting the desk clerk, we were told the TV feed for the entire building was out and they were working to get it xed. At least the beds were comfortable until morning’s dawn brought a new day. While packing the car for our return trip home, a thought hit me. I wonder if they might have any cancellations? Back to the front desk I went, to be greeted by a morning desk clerk from heaven. Explaining my tale of woes from the previous night, I asked if they had a cancellation. Upon checking, she said

Sporting Matters With Spence…
Stocked or Wild?
T
he weather changes, and the local fishermen switch to Bass. But many folks continue to reach out. I am not an expert on fishing, but I know a few things about our Pennsylvania trout. They will send a picture and ask a simple question. STOCKED or WILD? It is getting awfully difficult to determine the answer. I will sometimes look at my old notes from ICTHYOLOGY 345. The online forums are no different. The posts and threads are rather interesting. They are split 50/50. The re-
sponses are downright hilarious. Who knows? The PA Fish and Boat Commission, as well as several others, have gotten quite good at their craft. They have raised and stocked some beautiful fish over the past few years. Making it tough to tell. The nutrients and feed they use in the nursery are now legit. Honestly, a fish is a fish. And I really don’t care. Catching a wild Brown in the backyard is pretty neat. Here are a few things I consider before making the call. Location is key. Perhaps it is the most
obvious. Wild Browns are found in healthy waterways. These trout are migratory and will travel some distance. But your location is a good indicator of whether your fish is wild or stocked. Sure, they can grow Jamie big, but most of the Spencer wilds I catch locally are small. Like the photo above. A majority of the wild Browns have a black spot behind the eye. Take it to the bank. If it has one, there is a good
chance this fish was born in the stream. Please don’t confuse this with a blue spot. These markings are common in both wild and stocked trout. A holdover or a seasoned fish may develop these characteristics over time. Again. It is rather difficult to tell. Perhaps the only one that knows is the fish itself. Wild trout tend to be firm and lack the “belly” seen in stocked fish. Hatchery fish are fed high-protein pellets that help them grow. They eat well and tend to be more robust. Take a good look at the fins. Hatchery fish get beat up in the raceways where they live. There are more New York Knicks and knacks. They will sometimes grow in

A wild fish exhibits more vibrant colors. They tend to have a yellowish bottom, bright red spots, and a distinct, red-tipped adipose fin. But be careful. Once a stocked fish gets acclimated, their colors will mature within a few months of stocking. I try to look at the overall coloration of the fish. Not just one part in particular. Remember that no two trout streams are the same. Determining whether a fish is wild or stocked is a fun debate.
