This is the first important coin catalogue produced by Peter Webb Galleries and it promises to be the most valuable and varied ever offered at auction in New Zealand. All the coins are from New Zealand collections formed over many years, and this sale presents buyers with a unique opportunity to acquire coins of international standing.
The collection of gold coins of the world includes very attractive coins, notably the Austrian Proof 100 Corona (Lot 6) and Marie Louise 40 lire (Lot 36). The collection of bronze Napoleonic medals is outstanding and is described at the beginning of the collection (starting Lot 219). The ancient coins include some extremely fine solidi, notably the Anthemius (Lot 285). Three Waitangi crowns and a Pattern penny highlight a small New Zealand selection. The collection ofEnglish coins features a rare Aethelwulf penny (Lot 338), two Aethelberht pennies (Lots 339, 340) an Alfred penny (Lot 234) and some outstanding gold including a Henry VI noble (Lot 371) Half noble (Lot 372) quarter noble (Lot 373) and an Edward IV ryal (Lot 376).

This superb collection - made up earlier this century - is a very comprehensive range of the medals of Napoleon, depicting the important milestones and battles in his flamboyant history. The medals are original strikings in bronze. Size is given in millimetres. The condition of these pieces is extremely fine and bener, in many cases they are as struck. When condition is not EF or bener, this is stated, as are verdigris flecks and lacquering which occur on a few of the medals. The lacquering is subtle and does not detract from the medals In many cases the obverse portraits in bold relief are by Andrieu and reverse medallists are noted. Altogether the finest group of Napoleonic medallions to ever appear on the Australasian market.
