Following the decisive naval battle ofNavarino, fought off the Greek Islands in 1827, the Ottoman rule of Greece ended. 111e three powers (Russia, France & England) decided that a monarchy should be established to rule an independent Greece. Prince Otto of Bavaria was invited to take the throne ( after the first choice Leopold of Saxe-Coburg was murdered before he could be installed). On January 30 1833, the young Otto landed at Nauplia with 3500 Bavarian soldiers to help him establish his authority. He at first ruled under a Regency as he was not of age, however in July 1835 he assumed the reins of government in his own right. In 1836 he married Princess Amalie of 0/denberg and in that same year, we understand, while on holiday in Corfu was baled up by some of the local,,; who did not approve of his appointment as King. 111e British Navy secured his release by a show of strength with the steam vessel Medea, under the command of Capt. Horatio Austin with Edward J. Bird as 1st Officer who we understand led the shore party. 'TT1e grateful young King showed his appreciation by presenting Bird with the gold box at Ancona on the Adriatic coast of Italy.
